She is an amazing professor! She has an interactive teaching style rather then lecturing for the whole class. She is very fun and likes to make class fun. Every class there is a question of the day such as "What is your favorite pizza place?" She is quite an interesting person but I love Stepahine and her class! STRONGLY RECOMEND!!
This class was just fun to go to. She will change your mind of public speaking. Topics for speeches are fun and easy. There was not a single person that disliked her! Take her as your professor.
She is the best prof. ever. she actually cares for what you have to say, and think. Not like other prfs. she is the real deal TAKE HER!!!
Stephanie is one of the best teachers. She provided a unique social enviornment for the class, and everyone became friends. For public speaking, it helps if you are giving your speech in from of your friends! I can honestly say this is unlike any other class from depaul. I bet if you take her, you will hear stories of my class!
I LOVE Stephanie, she is one of thee best communication professors at DePaul!
I love this Stephanie to death, I learned so much in her class. Her teaching is not restricted to text books, she enables you to think on your own. She truly brings the subject matter to life, take any class she is offering, you won't regret it, I promise.
One of the best teacher at depaul....you might get scared on the first day of the class by looking at the work you have to do...but believe me..you will have fun in the class....take her for any class
Great professor. She's amusing while she teaches, very rarely a dull moment. She also does help to improve your public speaking skills.
Amazing teacher with a great heart. What more could you ask for? This teacher really wants her students to succeed. She also is very fun, witty, and loves to make the classroom a fun place. She is also very caring. I was in an accident and she called my cellphone to make sure I was ok. Very sweet, intelligent, and wonderful lady. Take her.
She doesn't exist on this planet. Kind of crazy but seems like an easy A
Stephanie is funny and caring. She wants her students to succeed. Class is fun and a class that you probably want to be in. Lots of randomness...definitely take her class if you have the chance
Stephanie is the most amazing prof I have worked with. She is in all honesty, inspiring. She cares, and cares deeply. I would take anything she taught without a second glance. SHE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
A wonderful professor who should be taken for any course at any time. She cares about you, cares about the course, cares about the material. She was inspiring all quarter. TAKE HER
Greatest teacher at DePaul, and I am not just saying that because I got an A. I loved this class even though I thought it would be boring. The teacher was wonderful, and she made all the students become friends. It was great! you will miss out if you don't take her class!
One of the best professors at DePaul! I had no interest in CMN 203 before taking her class. However, she made it one of the best classes I've ever had. Take her...you will not regret it.
Prof. Howell is the BEST PROF AT DEPAUL PERIOD!!! Shaker Baker
Prof. Howell is the BEST PROF AT DEPAUL PERIOD!!! Shaker Baker is her favorite student!!!!!!!!
I love this lady! She's extrremely fun...makes class very interesting. It also helps if you have smart kids in your class like I did.
Phenomenal. Creates a safe, fun, funny, entertaining, authentic, and challenging environment. Best multi-cultural class I've had to date.
Took her for summer school, super sweet! Class went by fast and we watch a lot of the office episodes. Midterm/Final short answer/essays and 3 papers. Everything was done in groups.
Stephanie is really a cool lady. She loves hearing about personal experiences and making connections with students. She's not your traditional prof -- she likes using videos, like The Office, in class and more discussion than lecture. She uses various readings instead of a textbook. 3 essays, midterm, final. Recommended.
Amazing teacher! Great at explaining things and very open-minded. She's funny, outgoing, and if you do the work, you're sure to get an A
Best professor ever!!! DON'T hesitate....take her before her space runs out. She's funny, outgoing...she loves The Office so you'll watch it once a week. She's just awesome! I'm glad to have taken her class this quarter =)
FABULOUS!! I loved this professor! She gave our class a fun, safe, nonjudgemental learning environment. I looked forward to class and enjoyed every minute of it.
Great professor. Her class is one you won't dread going to. Sadly, I didn't like alot of people in my class so I couldn't enjoy it as much. Otherwise Stephanie makes the class enjoyable and you learn at the same time.
I loved Ms. Howell...I mean Steph. She is very helpful and understanding about being a freshman and facing difficult transitions. She never judged anyone and was open to hearing everyone's stories. Make sure you come to class but that isn't to hard to do since this class was very enjoyable. Hurry and take her!
Class was never boring. Lot's of reading, and the quizzes cover EVERYTHING on the extremely long readings. Seems like this class was created for midwestern yuppies that have never seen a different ethnicity than white, but she made it ok.
dont take her for the gay rights lsp 200 class if you come from a conservative background. she made me feel extremely uncomfortable and im starting to regret taking this class
miss howell is an amazing prof! even before the class there was a syllabus out clearly defining the course objectives. she also made it clear on the first day that one must have an open mind. with that being said, if you dont have an interest or feel uncomfortable with the subject matter, you shouldnt be here. thanks miss howell for everything =)!
I would definitely take her again. Makes the classes interesting. Learn a lot, but it's still a fairly easy class. Nice and funny!
She rocks. You're lame if you don't rate her well based on the class content that you're too narrow-minded to digest (yes, this is directed to the LGBT classmates). Shes fun, she cares, shes understanding. Attendance required but it's worth it to show up. Not hard but not blow off either. You do the work, you should get at least a B.Best professor!
Great professor! Took her for LGBT Civil Rights, I found the topic very interesting and enjoyed the class discussions. She is very kind and considerate towards her students. Ignore the previous negative LSP200 review, every student was aware of the course topic and Ms.Howell warned anyone who might have a conservative mindset. Thank you Ms.Howell!
Had her for Senior Capstone. She was Great. She is very helpful and sweet. There are a lot of readings- tons. But the class goes by fast and she is very nice and understanding. I would take her again.
She is really nice and fun! A great interactive teacher. She cares about her students and listens to them, taking their opinions into consideration. She is really cool! The class was relativity easy but a ton of fun and I learned a lot!
Whate else can be said? You Must take this class! Stephanie provides for a safe harbor where you can really dig deep, open up, and truly learn. Highly recommended, and I have taken MANY classes--so do this.
First of all, Stephanie and I disagree completely about 50% of the time but I still highly respect her as a professor and she is all about your opinion being heard and you feeling safe speaking your mind. Would consider taking her again for another class if I had the chance. Easy grader. Very outspoken.
Stephanie is one of the BEST profs I've had at DePaul. Her voice is soothing but fun & she's mindful of students. Although the class wasn't "hard," definitely required effort. If you're interested in performing, you MUST take Stephanie! She cares about her students' success & is available for constructive feedback. Xtra credit assign are awesome
By far the best teacher I have had at DePaul. Stephanie is brilliant and her classes are always fun. She is relate-able and cares so much about her students. This is the first class that I've been excited to go to everyday. The workload isn't too bad but she expects quality work from her students. If you don't like her, something is wrong with you.
it was not only a easy class but a very very fun class, i would say by far the funiest class i ever had. we have 4 performances to do, but don't let it scare you, trust me, it was not that hard, and 4 paper to write, each of them is not more than 4 pages, and is more like a reflect paper, what else can you ask, take her!you won't regret it.
Howell is great. I took her for summer session 2...there was no book but many handouts...and 4 d2l readings. 5-7 essays that were easy, but that's kind of alot for 103. Great personality and responds to texts. The class is interesting and she cares alot! TAKE IT! I got an A- with mixed grades of A and B's on assignments...so go for it.
Stephanie's great. She won't leave anyone behind. Don't let the first day scare you!
TAKE HER, TAKE HER, TAKE HER!!!! She is BY FAR the best professor I've ever had. She explains concepts thoroughly, has phenomenal examples, and makes class engaging. I look forward to class every Tues/Thurs, and will truly miss this class. Just like the author in the below comment, don't let the first day scare you!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Stephanie! She was an amazing professor. Always kept the class engaged, loved every one of her students, made every person want to come to class every day. One of the sweetest and most fun professors i've had. If you can take a class with her, DO IT!
She was one of the best teachers I ever had a DePaul. She is funny, nice, entertaining, a great writer and person. I would recommend this class to anyone.
She's a nice person, but a subpar professor. The reading material is not scholarly. She's out of touch, still talking like we live in the 80s or 90s. She's also not very open to any viewpoints outside of her own. Easy class, to be sure, but if you're interested in the subject and have some gender studies background knowledge, don't expect much.
Stephanie is so far the best professor I have had. She takes her class seriously and cares about her students. She is not a super easy professor, she definitely expects a lot of her students. However, she will teach you a lot and keep you interested through out the quarter. You will not find her class boring!
Stephanie is incredible, one of the best at DePaul and if you get the opportunity to take a class with her you absolutely should.
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Professor Howell is not only friendly and awesome, but her class is literally just fantastic. It's an easy class if you do the few assignments assigned - they're not hard. Truly a fun class with a great vibe.
Honestly she was pretty amazing. Discussions were open, it's a non-judging zone and really fun. We talk about REAL topics and watch documentaries that pertain to real life. Has made me reflect on my view of the world, and appropriately, how I interact with other cultures. Take her if you can! Highly recommended.
Stephanie Howell is a great professor. She is always so helpful. If you go to class and participate you will get a good grade. She is also understanding when it comes to legit absences. She is so fun and nice and always interesting in class. She is a great person! Take her! Just do it. You wont regret it!!
Loved taking Explore Spoken Word with Stephanie! Such a wonderful, open minded lady. You have to keep a journal, give three presentations during the quarter, take a handful of quizzes and a final exam (its a paper) for your grade. She's really wonderful though, and you go on quite a few outings together. No textbook, she has all readings online.
Stephanie was absolutely amazing. My favorite professor at DePaul by far. She is just such a kind person and made her classroom a very comfortable space to learn in. She encouraged us each to do our best and expected grade A work from each of us, but with her encouragement it was easy to do. Can't wait to take another Stephanie Howell class!
Professor Howell's Intercultural Communication Class was simple and made you think about your own experiences.
She's hilarious, a decent grader and the class is soo fun! There are many field trips too! Get ready to write.
Even though Stephanie acts breezyfunkooky, she definitely tries to make you take her seriously. Attendance is mandatory, while the only thing you do is group discussion. Seriously, half the class is spent on the "question of the day." Such a weak class, annoying professor. Will never recommend.
Stephanie is a very sweet lady. She is very inspirational and encouraging. Easy class but believe no grade is given it is earned. Would recommend to those who are afraid of public speaking. Attendance is mandatory. She is just lovely and delicious.
Stephanie is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. She understands the students 100%. Her class is laid-back and she really engages each student. You get to know your classmates and feel extremely comfortable publicly speaking. I will definitely take Stephanie again and I absolutely recommend her. If you put in the effort you will get an A.
Takes attendance everyday by asking a "question of the day" and then goes down the attendance list. Super approachable and understanding. Assigns reading reflection papers that are about the assigned reading and the documentary watched in class. Also assigns "formal" papers, which are about reflecting about your personal life. Would recommend her!
Super cool teacher. We watched documentaries on current issues and related them to the readings. No exams, all participation and papers. I recommend her
I honestly haven't had Stephanie in almost a year, but as I register for classes for Winter I remember how absolutely AMAZING she is, and felt the need to write about it. She is the most caring, genuine, INTELLIGENT professor I have ever had. I can not say nice enough things. do not take her if you are not willing to be open and try new things.
Stephanie is one of the best professors I have ever had in my entire college career. She is amazing and incredibly authentic all the time. If you want to really enjoy the class, just buy in with her unique ways of approaching things. It can be a lot of fun if you just do what she asks and you are real with your answers. I'll miss this class.
Stephanie is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is incredibly kind and funny and respectful. All of the papers are about your own reflections on life or the readings/documentaries. The class itself is very open and friendly. She has made me a more mindful person about the way I move through the world. I cannot recommend her enough.
I love Stephanie, my absolute favorite professor at DePaul!! I learned so much from her as my instructor, beyond the classroom and into real life. She is kind and engaging and the material/homework assigned was extremely easy and self reflexive. If there is anyone you have to take, it is Stephanie. I wish she would teach more classes!!
Incredible teacher that inspired me to be a better performer and speaker! would take this class every semester if I could. Be ready to memorize texts but the performance days were some of my favorites days of class so far at DePaul !
Great person! I really learned a lot this quarter. She was able to open my eyes to a lot of new things. Also she posts all of the readings online so you don't have to buy the books!
Stephanie Howell is a beautiful person and a wonderful teacher. We were able to have some amazing class discussions, and I've never seen her get a class to open up like she got this one to open up. Take her if you can!!
Stephanie inspires. She is a beautiful person and a great teacher. She wants everyone to feel comfortable and challenges everyone to be BOLD. I took her poetry explore class, and it was amazing. You get to go out and write poetry and perform.
Honestly one of my favorite professors. I took CMN103 before w/different professor, but I am so glad that I retook it with Stephanie. Very engaging with students. Provides good feedback on papers and if you need anything she is there for you. You do a couple of workshops, watch some documentaries and write papers about it. 100% recommend taking her
Stephanie is an absolute legend! This was one of the best classes I have ever taken in my entire life. She is the most inspirational person and really made me think critically about the material. Take this class and you will become a way more open minded person! I cannot recommend her enough.
Stephanie is one of the best professors I've ever had. Took me a couple weeks to warm up to her though. She offers so much extra credit it's impossible to not pass unless you don't show up to class. No textbook or midterm. A LOT of writing (two 3-4 page papers a week sometimes) but they're not difficult papers. You'll learn a lot from her!
Stephanie is great, but she is an acquired taste. She is incredibly socially aware and for students that aren't into that, you may want to pass on her class. She is a super easy grader -- but there is a paper due nearly every class. I like Stephanie as a person, but as a professor she could work a bit harder. We watch a movie once a week.
Stephanie is an amazing teacher. Like others have said on here, it may take you a week or two to warm up to her but she is seriously one of the most caring and engaging professors I've ever had. Incredibly socially conscious and open. Yes, there is a lot of papers (you can do most of them in less than an hour) but worth it!
Stephanie was one of the best professors I've ever taken at DePaul. She cares so much about her students and she really wants you to succeed. You really have to put effort into her class and she'll respect you for it. I would definitely take her again, she really tries to build a long standing relationship with her students.
If I could take this woman for every class, I would. She has the biggest heart, and I was never tired in class because she is entertaining.
Professor Howell wants her students to do well, but seems most concerned about this so that she can start teaching full time. She will complain about how many jobs she has in order to pay rent, and overshares about other personal topics. We wasted a lot of class time doing the "question of the day" during attendance.
Stephanie is an amazing person. I could not have asked for a better professor for my first college class. She is super inspiring, hilarious, and down to earth. My entire class was like this huge family, and she made all of us feel special. She lets people really open up and isn't judgemental at all. 10/10
Stephanie is a great professor! She is engaging, and it is obvious she loves teaching this course. There were 8 papers and a final, but no midterm. She is extremely understanding and easy to talk to if you have issues with any of the papers.
Do not take Howell unless you want to spend the entire first week of class guessing super personal facts about her that are not relevant to the class at all, or if you are interested in how much money she makes. Very odd person, made class pretty uncomfortable for me, and most of what we talked about was not relevant to the course.
Professor Howell utilizes her class time wisely to make sure every one of her class means something. However, if you do not attend class or her workshops, you will fail! Your grade relies heavily on weekly papers and attendance. You will be assigned a paper each week but unless you've done the reading and pay attention in class, it will be a breeze
easy grader. super nice and means well. uses excellent readings and documentaries in class that will teach you a LOT. However, half of the time class is taking attendance and sharing random facts about yourself the WHOLE time- it is hard to sit through (so long and boring) but you have to go because she only accepts HW printed in person/ workshops
Attendance MATTERS!!! Steph assigns all of her homework assignments between Tuesday and Thursday so be prepared for late nights. Always print before class. Otherwise, this was the most painfully easy course I've ever taken. She's nice and genuinely wants you to succeed, but be ready for her to tell you WAY too much about her personal life.
Professor Howell is a fun lady! I missed an assignment one week and she took the time to call me and reassure me we all mess up. I was disappointed I never got to meet her in person because she was so engaging online. No lectures or tests, just lots of discussion posts and a few papers. Easy course, but very interesting and current.
I would love to take more classes with Stephanie. She is reassuring and helps you with anything you need. Her instructions and expectations were pretty clear. I missed a few classes and she reached out to me and we had a phone conversation on how I could make up the points. If you have open communication with Stephanie you can't fail.
Stephanie is a fantastic professor! She cares about engaging with her students, and she wants everyone to connect with the content on a personal level. She assigns lots of small papers, but she's an easy grader and really just wants to hear your unique perspective on what you talk about in class. I would take her for every CMN class if I could!
Howell is one of the professors that makes you wish cloning was real. She's very passionate in her work and caters towards the wellbeing of her students. If you want a professor that truly wants you to succeed and learn about the world through a different perspective, Howell is the one to take! She's an absolute inspiration, don't miss out.
Did a lot of stuff with groups that felt redundant after a while, but Howell is super friendly and grades really easy, so it'd be hard to fail one of her classes.
She's genuine, at least.
She is very fake, she pretends to be this nice and caring teacher. But really she is not she does not accept any late work even a couple of hours late. She is a very strict grader and does not specify why she is removing points. She also has very weird due dates that make it very difficult to get things done on time.
She is very unclear about what is expected and in her grading. She is also extremely strict with late work and not very considerate of her students. She acts like grades do not matter but is also not lenient at all with her grading. I would say she is actually very shrewd not compassionate. She also made me very uncomfortable in her class.
I thought she was pretty cool. As long as you participate in the class, she is pretty chill. But I liked how she put us in groups so we could get to know other people better. We have to do three papers, particpation (responding to others discussion posts and reading them, and talk in class. Pretty decent class.
Stephanie Howell is an extreme liberal and expresses her opinions greatly in class. I don't mind that, but after the quarter ended. I really don't know what I learned in the class, besides learning about Professor Howell life and her opinions on it. She claims grading is unethical, but when it comes to grading her students, she can be rough.
I had Stephanie as a professor during the middle of the pandemic and even though the CMN103 class really thrives in an in-person setting, Stephanie created such a loving, safe space for our zoom class. She's humble and honest about her past and uses that to be an even more powerful instructor. She's super helpful and wants her students to succeed.
LOVE Professor Howell! Please take her class. You use the book plenty, but even then, the book teachers you a lot and makes the assignments easier. She is very kind and has such a calming voice. Makes the class interesting! I took this class during COVID on Zoom, so I'm pretty sure she's cooler in person.
Steph is a goddess! She's so, so caring. Very knowledgable as well. Class should honestly be required for many more majors -- it's that applicable to every career. Class work wasn't hard per se, but it did make you think. She provides amazing, lengthy feedback as well. Engage with Steph and you're bound to have a great time, learn, and laugh.
Honestly this class was a joy. They are such an amazing professor. She is so kind and she clearly is passionate. You'll laugh and cry in this class, I highly recommend taking it.
From the start of Professor Howell's class, due dates are unclear and jumbled. Not a enough time to do the assignments at 100% b/c they feel rushed just to get it done (ex: get a discussion post up). she has us read the textbook but i don't feel like i'm learning anything IN CLASS. HER pov is clearly given in class, neglectful of other factors
Stephanie is a great professor, her lectures are very interesting, she teaches the content of the class through narration about everyday life experiences and this makes the learning easy. I learned a lot in this class, the content really sticks with you. She gives many opportunities to get extra credit and she's a fair grader. Super caring too.
Prof Howell is the most sincere, kind, and caring teacher I've ever had. She listens to all her students and encourages friendly discussion. She's a bit unorganized in her lectures and scatter brained, and her personality is strong. Sometimes she overdislcoses personal life in class lol but if you do the homework you'll pass. tests are very easy.
I absolutely loved Stephanie's class! Our discussions in class were great but she gives a lot of homework each week -- there are often papers, quizzes, and discussion posts due every single week. There are many, many opportunities for extra credit if you fall a little behind, though. She is a lot of fun to have in class and is very upbeat!
DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. She overshares way too much about her life and starts crying in class and it makes me very uncomfortable. If you even look at your phone or laptop she will call you out. Attendance and participation really matters. But I will say she is a pretty easy grader, if you do the work you will get an easy A.
Stephanie is a very caring professor, but she spends the whole class talking about herself and repeating ideas. Her due dates are also not the best, and her directions can be unclear at first. She can be a tough grader on her workshops, but her quizzes and papers are very easy if you are a strong writer. Also offers a lot of extra credit!
Honestly an angel. They're so sweet and seem to genuinely care about all of their students and want them to perform well! I really liked this class. Even though the professor can be a little all over the place sometimes, I say that's part of the charm of the class. I would 100% take one of their courses again!
Stephanie is a bit goofy but she's really really nice and truly cares about her students, for can 103, she cares about the subject a lot and she refers a lotttttt to the textbook so you gotta read a bit but you can Lowkey get away with skimming fr. but she's nice and loves documentaries so you'll get to watch a bunch of good educational ones
I love this teacher. She is amazing, assignments are easy if you do the work, and she is simply a joy to be around. I would recommend her class to everyone, plus her class isn't super hard.
Stephanie is awesome- super genuine and keeps it interesting. No tests and assignments are not difficult. Definitely recommend her.
Professor Howell was an extremely welcoming professor thoughtout her CMN 103 class. It is obvious that she cares a lot about her students, and is very knowledgeable in her field. You should be able to pass this class by just doing the work. There are a lot of assignments but nothing unmanageable. (she is very charismatic in a good way!)
I took Intercultural communication with professor Howell and I loved every minute of it. She is so sweet and very understanding. She is definitely a character but in a good way. She has a very fun and bubbly personality. I was always entertained in this class no matter what.
I'm somewhere in the middle of all of these reviews. She's a fine professor. I didn't really learn anything that I didn't know or could learn from Ted Talks. The content is important. However, she trauma dumps like no other. Get ready to learn every piece of personal information about her life. It's an easy course. She's just kinda goofy. Nice tho.
I took Stephanie for Intercultural Communication, and she was honestly one of my favorite professors! She can definitely get a little sidetracked and emotional at times, but I think that's a part of what makes her classes so engaging. There were weekly discussion boards in the class, but missing one or two won't really cost you.
Stephanie was so kind. Her class was easy if you put the work in she uses a textbook and quizzes are based on that. Quizzes are answered on a document tho. Best prof for CMN103. Lectures will never be boring. Prepare for some group work towards the end of the quarter but other than that ez class
Stephanie is one of the sweetest professors I have ever taken a class with. It's very obvious that she loves her job and truly wants to see her students succeed. The material she assigns isn't difficult, and she will love what you write as long as she can tell you're putting in the work.
Very easy to navigate weekly class structure with discussion board posts, quizzes, and weekly extra credit available. There were two research papers that were simple and had clear instructions. She's very kind and tries to emphasis a respectful and engaging classroom environment at all times. She is an expert but acknowledges her own privilege
Mistakes that she makes will become the student's responsibility 99% of the time. Make sure to watch out for those undated assignments! She doesn't fully understand how d2l works but knows enough to think she does. Kind but condescending. You're constantly walking on eggshells when talking to her. You'll make some great friends in this class.
The class was fairly simple, but the prof's style was just not for me. Too much group discussion every class, felt like we were treated like high schoolers rather than adults, and sometimes it just got too personal and emotional. I often felt uncomfortable in there. The workload is manageable though, it just wasn't the class for me.
Professor Howell is definitely a character but in a good way. She has lots of funny stories and relates to her students but is also very well spoken when it comes to her subject. The class is manageable and worthwhile; the topics discussed are about are very interesting and apply to everyday life.
Stephanie was a wonderful professor. Though she may not have been everyones cup of tea, she was always very welcoming and open to her students ideas or opinions. Attendance and participation are heavily stressed in this course, but it allowed for a classroom community to grow that I have not experienced in classes at DePaul previously.
Truly one of the best, most caring professors I have ever had the pleasure of taking. She's funny and supportive. She has a big personality which some may find hard to handle so keep that in mind! But if you have the opportunity to take her, she will be your favorite professor hands down!
Professor Howell is very rice and understanding. It's clear she manages the topic and is very passionate about it. she sometimes shares stories that are a bit too personal/emotional so be aware. she gives a fair amount of hw each well. overall, I liked her class!
She talks about her life a lot instead of lecturing about the actual criteria of the class
Professor Howell's class is engaging and manageable. She's passionate about the material and creates a respectful environment, though can sometimes get sidetracked. unstuckstudy was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
A really good class! she uses her real-life experiences and ties it into the lectures. She does put you in lots of random groups and has one big group project at the end of the quarter so be prepared for that. other than that, she is a lovely person and very understanding.
My favorite professor at DePaul. Highly recommended.
Professor Howell is a well spoken, caring, and at times distracted teacher. Attendance is mandatory, consistent unexcused tardiness is marked down for deducted course points. Lectures are long but engaging, your mind will be opened up to new communication aspects. Biggest downside is her excessive (3-4 per week) homework assignments requirement.
She is nice but often goes off topic, but at some times can be fine but other times kind of annoying. Also ridiculously strict on deadlines. But she is a genuinely nice person who cares. The class is more valuable than you think it is, I learned a lot from it.
Good class, material is easy when you stay on top of doing it, but the professor themself genuinely comes off crazy. Uses her point system as a form of punishment or praise on students. Very insecure of their class not being taken seriously and if you give off that vibe it will be reflected in your participation grade and in class attitude.
I LOVED taking CMN103 with Professor Howell. Attendance is mandatory but every class was super engaging and interesting. A lot of small group work which is a nice way to meet your classmates. A decent amount of outside of class work but it wasn't awful. This class opened my mind to a lot of topics that I hadn't thought out prior. Take this class!
Worst Prof. in my 4 years @ DP Speaks to class like 1st graders w/ self-described "teacher voice". Every class: 30 minutes of roll call with questions like: What's your favorite color. 30 minutes of reciting rehearsed personal stories and crying. Stops class to call out glances at phones. More work than my other 3 classes COMBINED.
Prof. Howell tries to present herself as considerate but comes off as patronizing. All busy work + pretty basic lessons that she teaches too slowly and delicately. A lot of wasted time. She means well but doesn't understand that she's doing more harm than good for students by babying them. Discouraging experience, this is not what college should be
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR SANITY! Ever wanted to get talked down to like you were a 1st grader? Ever wanted to pull the hair out of your head because there's so many DIFFERENT assignments that don't have anything to do with each other? That's what I thought. Howell is terrible. She shames students in front of everyone too.
Stephanie was is an amazing professor and her class is very engaging. There is a lot of group work involved in class and it counts as your participation grade. She is very specific about her deadlines, not much leeway which can be frustrating. (Ex: due at 9:00PM but submitted at 9:20 she will deduct a lot of points but 9:05 or 9:10 is still good)
i honestly hated everything abt this class i truly dreaded going to it every week. if you want to be talked down to then you should take this!
Genuinely teaches and talks down to students like we are elementary schoolers. The cadence & pitch of her speech gives condescending spiritual guru who has to drag out every other syllable. Trauma dumps without warning, including about a gory, violent hate crime with SUCH explicit detail. Constantly gets very emotional, personal, & side-tracked.
I had mixed feelings about this professor, you can tell they care a lot about spoken word, but there's no sick policy. You'll get a 0 for the day with no way to make it up, even if she sends you home herself. Lots of overwhelming assignments/performances. Didn't really get to discover Chicago much, more so just dumped places to explore on our own.
Very kind person. Decent instructor. Has her quirks as we all do. She has all these rules meant for fairness but they honestly didn't really seem fair at all. Had a group project for the final and half my group didn't show up, told us she would take it into consideration when grading us, got a C.
