Awesome prof. Incredibly nice & knows what she is talking about. She's very understanding especially if you are struggling with an issue regarding assignments. Would definitely recommend taking her future classes as well. The only thing I didn't like was that she made us purchase brand new textbooks ($120!!) that I honestly barely opened..

As a night class these lectures can be long and some were pretty boring. The notes are pretty clear and easy to understand and she is very willing to explain when people need it. There's a lot of additional readings for the course and we barely used the textbook. In general, it was a good course, but it can be a bit dry.

She was very enthusiastic about the course, which is necessary for a 3-hour night lecture. She thoroughly explained concepts in class, and was willing to explain concepts to you if you did not understand. The only annoying thing about her class is that she made you subscribe to TopHot for participation marks.

Funny, energetic, interesting material

she made 3 hour lectures pretty interesting because she always had fun videos or games to help us understand concepts and theories. she can be a bit fast in lecture though and go through the slides very quickly so you can't copy everything down.

What a great professor! She really got me into wanting to study CJS. Took her SOC1500 class twice a week in the mornings. Participation was mandatory. Rough marker, yes.. but nonetheless interesting. Expect long reviews with over 300+ terms to know. Still though, WORTH IT! I'm hoping to take more classes with her once sh's back from maternity leave

Very good prof! I've had her for SOC1500 and SOC2700. She's consistent with her teaching style, she posts about 80% of her information on her slides and will add in a couple extra things in lecture. Not necessarily easy because theres a lot of information but its not hard information. One of the best profs I've had I would take her class again

Professor Howells was a great professor. She's passionate about her subject, her assignments and testing are challenging, but reasonable, and her delivery of course material is clear. I would highly recommend her as a professor to anyone who is looking for a professor who is fair, will provide a challenge, and is passionate about her subject.

Good prof, easily approachable

She's very kind and she tries to make the dry content as interesting as possible. She cancelled a lot of classes though, some were very last minute which was frustrating and her grading criteria for assignments was rather vague. Overall, she is a great prof to have though.

She makes class very enjoyable! and her exams are fair as long as you do the readings.

Class was a breeze, marks were easy. Participation could be done from home if you keep the program open, you can learn from the textbook if you read for the weekly quizzes you will have zero problem with any of the tests. She's funny and you can tell she likes what she does.

Loved her. You had to read soooo much but half the mark was just showing up and participating. The actual work was difficult but fair. If you're interested in the subject and dedicated then she's a good prof for you. She's also super friendly.

Dr. Howells is a great professor overall. She made the content very interesting, easy to understand, and truly has a passion for what she teaches. She gives you many opportunities to be successful but you have to put in the work in order to be. Tests are fair and overall marks assignments fairly. She definetely made a 3 hour lecture go really fast.

Professor Howells was a good prof who taught SOC*1500 well. She was nice and was very knowledgeable about the material. The midterm and the final were all multiple choice. However, she would often criticize the class of 600 people for being too loud and would use the "I'll wait until your quiet" technique which came across as condescending.

The assessments are based heavily on the readings and on details she discusses in lecture but doesn't post about online. Her lectures are very organized, clear and informative and she always lets her night class out at least 45 minutes early. Going to class is a must to get a good mark in the class as she doesn't post all of the slides online.

This class is an easy grade booster if you go to class or read the textbook. There was one essay worth 40%, and you have the freedom to write what you're interested in. Howells was very passionate during lecture and always lets out early, even if you just sit there in class you are guaranteed a good mark, most of the course is common sense.

Look everybody complains because they take these courses thinking it's going to be the easiest thing in the world. The exams are very easy outside of the long answer. And well some questions may be obscure textbook info, just study hard and the course is easy.

I found her year 1 Soc class to be very easy and she gave good lectures. 30% of the grade was from quizzes, but everything can be answered with common sense and the textbook.

Prof Howells is very interactive with the students and always has words of encouragement. She gives a lot of opportunities for bonus marks. The textbook readings are long and heavy but it is an interesting course.

Overall a great professor that is engaging and presents the material in an interesting manner. Professor Howells really knows her material and is always happy to answer any questions during class. Her powerpoint slides are sparse so be prepared to write a lot of notes during class. Great professor who really cares about her students.

Amazing professor, she was clearly passionate about the content. Go to the "live" lectures when you can, and pay attention as you can score bonus points. The feedback I received on my work was great, and the seminars were helpful. The quizzes every week are easy, as are the seminar tasks. Lots of reading, and mandatory textbook.

Super down to earth, the lectures were fun despite being online. The course was graded tough but very fair.

Professor Howells was a very good prof but she does make you work for your grade. If you do not try and show up to every class, it will not benefit you since she gives our bonus marks for participating which you can use to drop your lowest grade. Her quizzes were relatively easy but her final exam was somewhat difficult if you do not study well.

Dr Howells is a very passionate teacher and her lectures were super informative. There were tons of opportunities for bonus grades throughout the course. There is a lot of reading, but if you keep up with the work and attend lectures you'll have a solid grade.

Had Prof Howells last semester and she provided many opportunities to upgrade your mark. The lectures were informative, the tutorials were easy marks and the quizzes were fair. Wasn't a big fan of the group assignment but it wasn't too bad. Overall, a good class, seems like a seriously nice person

The best prof I have had at Guelph. She cares about her students and criminology/sociology so much. I am so glad I have been able to take 3 classes of hers. Her classes make you work for your grade but in doing so I have learned so much. I recommend everyone take her class! Also a really funny lady too!

I had the privilege to take 3 classes taught by Dr. Howells during my undergrad and each one I thoroughly enjoyed. She makes your work for your grades and her classes are definitely not easy As but you'll learn a lot. The 4th year seminar I took with her was very interesting and she is more than fair in what she expects of you.

Howells is my favourite professor. She cares if we understand the material and gives you every chance to catch up if you do not understand. Very personal.

I personally think she is great! Lectures are very engaging and she is always available and willing to help. If you do the readings, study, and put in a respectable amount of effort, you will do fine in the class. The content itself is also quite interesting and easy to understand. This class has been one of my favourites this semester.

Howells did a great job sparking discussions in this class. It is very "presentation" based but a very interesting class. 10/10 would recommend it!

Best fourth year seminar! 10/10 would recommend. If you are interested in school shootings or violence within schools, take this class!

She engages well with students and is understanding, even getting people to participate in an 8:30 AM lecture. She also takes care to answer questions if you talk to her after class. My only note is that the readings from the textbook are very long, and can be a little tedious. But overall I liked the course and the professor!

Professor Howells is amazing, and I highly recommend taking her 1 credit class on school shootings if you get the opportunity. The content is so interesting, and she creates a class that really makes you want to engage in the class and succeed.

Dr. Howells is amazing! Second time I've had her and she is great. Amazing lectures, very responsive, helpful if you want to see what you got wrong on tests/exams. I found the questions SLIGHTLY difficult - you're gonna wanna study/review - but if you do you can definitely do well!

Professor Howells is a great prof despite what some people say. She's very kind and her lectures are fun and interactive. She uses TopHat a lot in class, so going to lecture and participating is important for your grade. This class is not overly difficult if you put in a good effort and take notes, but the TA's mark pretty hard on the assignments.

Lectures were quite engaging given the content and 8:30am lectures. Willing to explain concepts briefly in class or at the end. Didn't allow students to disrupt the middle of the lecture but also didn't expect total silence. Essay is a large proportion of the course (45-50% including all steps) but TA feedback given is super helpful.

Amazing prof overall, very kind, fair and helpful. As expected with 4th year seminar courses, in-class and online discussion participation is a must. She is very approachable and genuinely cares for students. She also made sure to facilitate lots of discussions between students and urged us to get to know our peers better...great classroom vibe!

Her lectures were informative, although you have make sure you attend the lectures as not everything is said in the slides. Participation is part of your grade through tophat, but it is pretty easy to complete. It's important to do the readings and listen to the lectures as all the material is included in the exams.

Dr. howells genuinely cares about her students and provides engaging lectures. She made course content interesting and brought in guest speakers to help bring in other perspectives. Exams were mediocre, if you study you will do well, the rest of the course was graded readings. If you find yourself in one of her classes, you will 100% enjoy it!

i really loved my introductory class with professor howells. she was super accessible for office hours and gave great feedback. i would definitely recommend doing the readings assigned, typically you get a little bit more tested on them than other classes. the rubrics and marks were pretty straightforward, i knew exactly what to expect during it

Her lectures were the highlight of my morning, she was so engaging, thorough, and explained concepts in a way that was so easy to retain. It's necessary to attend class to fully get the notes & participation marks. She cares for her students & is very willing to help if you go to office hours. I wish she could teach all my lectures she is the best!

Dr. Howells is a great prof: engaging, clear, and genuinely caring. Her lectures rely on explanation over slides as well as TopHat questions, so attending class is important. No textbooks but assigned readings weekly which are essential for exams. The only downside is the cumulative final, but overall the course is interesting and worth taking.

i LOVED prof howells class so much!! this is the one class i didnt skip a single lecture for :00 it is fun and engaging (use of tophat). im so sad this class is done :(

Had her for SOC 2700, and she was pretty great. She talks a lot but not in the way that makes you super bored. A downsized was her using tophat but its fine. If lecture ends early she will let you go early and she even cancelled class a few times because we were ahead of schedule. She's pretty easy to talk to but its better to talk in person.

Loved professor Howells. She was super engaging with the class (using top hat) and cared about students. She has great lectures and I was excited to go to every class. Fair grader and has clear instructions for studying and assignments.
