Has no personality. Unreasonably cruel.
shes SO RUDE

She is direct and to the point, but she explains things very well. All business but a good teacher.
Classes are held for one hour a week. You need to go to class, she grades for participation and you have to stay the entire hour. You also have to complete math lab hours (about 3 a week). She gives you some examples in class, but for the most part you teach yourself in lab.
class is completely pointless seeing as you can just teach yourself how to do everything in math lab , she gives good notes but has to rush through them because of time constraints. she's ok, it's LSU's math department that sucks! it's all computer based-no half credit! you have to go to class which sucks.
This is by far the worst instructor I have EVER had. Through the advice of my advisor at KSU, I took her Elem. Math class. What a pathetic wate of money. I had errors, but she wouldn't elaborate. I was actually scolded for expecting too much interaction b/c this was a dist. learning class. All I wanted was to understand what was incorrect! :o(
She's a good teacher but she's not very friendly. She's actually really intimidating and scares me alot but if you strictly wanna learn math dont care if you get chewed out in class then go ahead and take her!
While it isn't her fault that LSU's math department needs to rethink the way they offer classes (1hr lecture 3hr lab aka teach yourself math and pay for it) she never seemed to have enough time to finish her examples and on top of that she has no respect for her students. She always shows up with a bad attitude and is extremely rude to students.
She isn't very nice. She goes really fast and acts like math is the only class that matters and is obsessed with her precious math lab, which is annoying.
Very hard, expect to teach yourself everything. She is rude and doesn't tolerate anything and she will call you out. Don't expect her to answer any questions in class. Don't miss a class and do you're homework and quizzes. Good luck!
She is RUDE. Don't ask questions because she will not answer them nicely. She doesn't care about you, she only cares about getting paid. She lovesssss math lab. Take someone else if you can.
I love math, so this class was easy for me. She was very rude and you had to teach yourself. Cell phones are not allowed and she will YELL at you for them, I don't think I'm in highschool. The practice tests are just like the tests and recommend doing them until you get a 100 then take the test
I only found this class easy because I thought myself everything. literally, everything. My math lab is used the whole semester, and if you don't actually take the practice tests multiple times - you will fail. It is all about practice. If you cant do that on your own, this class isnt for you. Ms Kurtz is a very rude individual. she will belittle y
Teacher is horrible - class itself wasn't too bad. Rudest teacher I had all semester. 50 minutes once a week is enough with her. I taught myself EVERYTHING via MyMathLab. Do you homework and quizzes and work practice exams. Practice! This class was an easy A but if you don't have just a general background in trig, I'd consider a different teacher.
Kurtz is the rudest teacher I have had at LSU. She is not friendly and I have only seen her smile once. She is sarcastic and makes you feel stupid for any question you ask. If the other teacher is available, I highly recommend taking her. Avoid Kurtz if at all possible.
Kurtz is only rude if you give her a reason to be and asking stupid questions that she just answered annoys her. She is a really good teacher and explains everything that need to be done. Easy A if you go to class, pay attention, and do mymathlab daily.
I agree with the last person to comment that she is only rude when given a good reason to be, she doesn't just attack random students. She is VERY HELPFUL during office hours - almost like a completely different person. She teaches very clearly and well. Very difficult class no matter who teaches. I received an A but I'm a borderline nerd. :)
She was a very good teacher, but can be rather monotone and sarcastic; however, I did very good in her class. I never missed a class and didn't make anything less than a 96 on any of my exams. Doing homework, quizzes, class attendance, and lab participation will boost your grade.
She was clear with her notes, but I still had to go back with the homework and teach myself. I made sure I got As on my homework and tried my best on the quizzes. Also, for the exams, she drops your lowest and replaces the grade with the final, if its better. I liked that.
No matter what teacher you get for 1022, all the tests, homework, and quizzes, grade drop are the same. Attendance is a grade, and you have to pretty much teach yourself the material in the math lab. She's not a bad teacher, but it just doesn't matter who you get.
She isn't exactly the nicest teacher, but I think she teaches the subject well. I found her much more approachable and helpful while visiting her in her office hours. Basically, go to class, do the homework in MyMathLab, and your grade will be fine.
She's a really good instructor. Very neat and organized. She prepares really good notes but I didn't really use them. Just pay attention, go to class, and don't use phones. And do the practice tests as many times as you can for practice, because it will prepare you for exams. Use 3 hours in lab wisely - there's always someone there to help you.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had at LSU. Very sarcastic and mean. She's so sarcastic and condescending. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Class is mandatory, but I never went. She was understanding and helped me out all semester. If I would have gone to class and the mathlab I would have gotten an A. Assigned seats in class and it is boring. Buy the notes for $5 which teaches you what to do. Easy class and good professor.
Stephanie makes attendance part of the class grade. You have to go to the math lab three hours per week. Everything on mymathlab will help you tremendously as well as the tutors in the math lab. One thing I do not like about class is assigned seats, but I look at it as a pro because I do not get distracted by friends. Keep practicing. No laziness!
She is very helpful IF YOU ASK FOR HELP! If you don't ask she probably will not help you. She makes attendance a grade which is an easy A if you show up. She does grade replacement so you can make a bad grade and if you do better on the final the bad grade will be the same as the final grade. If you try and ask for help its not a hard class at all
Ok so the class is easy as long as you do the myMathLab stuff but she is just a flat out jerk. I would not recommend taking her because she is just plain rude to students and her smelly TA walks around to take attendance and make sure we are taking notes. When you correct her on an example in class she gets super offended and snaps at you.
Ms. Kurtz is the worst math teacher I have ever had. She would arrive late to class and have an attitude with her students. MyMathLab was a lifesaver! The examples were very helpfu in preparing for the test. This class requires a lot of self motivation because you will have to teach yourself. Not reccomended for students who struggle in math.
The hardest part about this class is actually showing up. It feels like the class itself is pointless because you have to teach yourself in the math lab-- but the material is not hard at all. DO NOT LISTEN TO HER WHEN SHE SAYS NOT TO USE THE UNIT CIRCLE!!! It is legitimately the only reason I passed this class with flying colors.
She is very disrespectful to students from the very first day of class. Very arrogant lady and very conceded. I would not recommend this class to anyone. Shows up to class late on a regular basis. If you did not take trig in high school good luck because she does not teach the material. Expect to teach yourself. Math lab will save you. Good Luck
She is everything you look for in a math teacher organized and stern. The mathlab sucks if you understand the course, but it helps if you are struggling.
Honestly the teacher you get for math really doesn't matter considering you're there once a week for an hour. You do all of your work in the mathlab and most likely will learn everything in the mathlab. Just show up & act like you're interested and you'll be fine.
I actually took Professor Kurtz for 1021 and 1022. She was an awesome math teacher. Her lectures are clear cut. She goes over the concepts with you and shows you exactly how to work the problems step by step. If you attend class and do your homework and quizzes there is no reason you shouldn't pass this class.
Arrogant, disrespectful, and rude to students. She is not friendly and clearly hates her job. The teacher doesnt matter much though considering mymathlab is where all the grading occurs. Show up to class, do the practice tests, and you should be fine with her.
She gives a lot of homework but it really helps for the exams, which are exactly like it. Class was boring but easy if you've taken advanced math before. She's a good teacher, but she tells you not to memorize the unit circle, but I already had, and did work that way and it was fine.
If you do what you're supposed to do, you'll get an A. She's the coordinator of the course's Math Lab, so she knows what's up. She tells you exactly what you need to do, so there's not any excuse for missing anything. She might seem intimidating, but if you need help, she is easy to contact and surprisingly helpful. Downside: she takes attendance.
if you read the class notes and do the homework this class is easy as hell. her lectures are easy to understand and only teaches things that are needed
Make sure to have your cell phones put away during class.
It is important to have your class notes, to do your homework and quizzes. It's very important to complete all assignments and take the practice test, it will help you on your test! All tests are taken in the himes lab, very uncomfortable. also, hated going to the math lab every week for 3 hours, but one math a week was very worth it.
I took the online version of this class so I mean if you can teach yourself this middle school math then you should take it. I never met the teacher but she was helpful in emails and as long as you do the homework and take the practice tests its an A or A+ class for sure .
It's beyond important that you attend each and every class. Don't skip out on doing practice tests cause they're basically the actual test.
she was the most ruthless professor ive ever had. when students asked questions she would bluntly reply as if she were annoyed. she was very clear about the way she grades. she had a no phone policy which is respectable since we only see her once a week (thank god). she was fast paced but still taught the material thoroughly.
Tough. Fast. Intense. Stiff. Not a good time.
Knows what she is talking about but moves extremely fast. Be ready for a lot of homework, math lab, and quizzes.
Kurtz falls onto the stricter side of professors. She will have a seating chart to make sure you are attending her class. There is not much to say about her as she comes to class does the lecture and that's about it. However, she does work in the Math Lab so that is kind of a pro.
Ignore the whiners. Kurtz is a great teacher. Kind, fair, and the best 1022 prof to have because she is in charge of the math lab. 99% of your learning for this class will take place in the lab regardless. Class is just a formality/bonus points. Bottom line: put the work in, do the homework, do your lab hours, work the practice tests, and get an A.
Professor Kurtz rushes through lectures. I understand we only meet once a week but dont go to class expecting to learn anything. I literally only go to get my attendance grade. I would not take this class or her again.
she's the big dog of the math department, so she knows what she's doing when she teaches and simplifies everything for you. you're gonna learn from math lab regardless but the class is still helpful because she breaks everything down so you can learn how to do the trig easily
horrible
I took this class over summer session B (5 months of material compressed into 1 jam-packed month), for a total of 12 credit hours. I. COULD. NOT. BREATHE. With daily assignments, it is so, very hard to keep up. It's doable and passable, but I couldn't handle it and ended up switching my major and dropping. Keep up, submit assignments, and practice.
In the wake of Online Learning, I have had to refer to online videos and simply teach myself. To pay for a full class experience, and to be robbed of it for online videos and office hours is beyond me. Study the material, get it down, you will be on your own. Trigonometry is a hard thing to learn alone, so be prepared to do it alone.
Clearly is passionate about what shes teaching but come on, 50 math problems a night is INSANE. Makes no sense and there is no reason why someone should have to do 40+ problems a night. Will be taking a W in this.
Personally I wouldn't recommend her. I took this class online and the workload was RIDICULOUS. 65 Question homework with 5 parts to each question. The online recorded lectures were no help, and neither was she. I'm normally good at math but I basically had to teach myself the material that I've never seen before. It costs $15 to take an exam too.
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE. She makes you do mathlab questions that are about 120 questions on hw and quiz every week. its very hard to focus on your other classes because youre tying to teach the material to yourself and keep up with assignments. For the being head of math department but not hosting zoom weekly and teaching her students is a JOKE.
she's cool
whiner's don't know what they're talking about
she's ok lots of homework
don't slack off and you'll get a good grade
she's good lots of homework
hard but if you do your work you'll be fine
This was an asynchronous class. Lectures are old videos from what seems like 2003, and notes to go along with the videos are not super. Homeworks do not connect very well with notes/ lectures. This is a very "self-taught" class. I did not interact with this professor minus the fact that she sends email reminders.
Kurtz is a tough case where you hate her throughout the year, then at the very end, she does something really nice. Entirely MathXL based, and exams were on ProctorU, which sucks and is expensive, but LSU is supposedly changing that. Homework can get excessive, so don't fall behind. Just do the homework, and it should bolster any poor test grade.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Kurtz is definitely the worst professor I have ever taken. She is rude and not a good teacher at all. She is very unconsidered and just a bad teacher. Switch if you have her!!!
Honestly, If you don't have to take this course don't take it or if you don't have to come to LSU, just don't come to the school overall the math department sucks. I had a B in the class prior to exam 3 and I email her and she is beyond rude in her email explaining my situation. I amazes me how hateful LSU is especially with everything going on.
AVOID CLASS not for working professionals take @ your local JC don't waste your $$ taking @ LSU provides videos of her working through problems ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS Don't buy her notes get ready to spend 30 hrs/wk, min, on this class 50-60 problems per section each problem 5-6 parts,3-4 sections per week don't take another course you wont have time
Honestly kind of surprised by the rating, she isn't a bad professor at all. 1022 was just a repeat of trig I learned in pre-cal my senior year, not the hardest math class that you could take at all. Homework is due every Wednesday and Thursday, and a quiz every Friday. Need 2 hours of math lab a week and honestly dont mind it. Must attend class!
It is a lot of work and you have to spend two hours in the math lab every week. She overall is a good teacher. She does not allow phones/Macs out during class and she has a TA that walks around the whole time to make sure. It only helps you pay attention. She can come off as super mean, but she seems sweet some days. She is good at teaching.
She takes attendance and mathlab hrs for a grade, but its a really easy A to get. As long as you do the homework you should be good. She was really nice and understanding with every problem I had. Seems kinda standoff-ish but shes business
Coming from someone who is not good at math, this class is not easy. But that is just the subject matter. Kurtz is a good teacher (she seems rude but she's just very serious) & gives LOTS of examples & does a great job at making things easy to understand. Go to class, do your math lab hours & assignments, & do the practice tests & you'll be golden.
There is a lot of homework for this class, but she drops your lowest quiz and homework grade. She gets straight to the point and sends reminders about testing. She does a lot of examples, and the MathLab practice test is practically the test you will take. As long as you attend class and do the practice test, you will do fine.
Prof Kurtz is not the best math teacher, but she also not the worst. She strictly follows her schedule with the homework, quizzes, and tests due dates but can be flexible when necessary. You really have to show up to class because she has her own way of teaching the lessons and I find her way easier than the videos provided by the mathlab website.
Attendance is a grade, she has assigned seating and it's taken that way. 2hrs math lab/wk, absolutely no leniency on it. Though class is mandatory, I didn't find it very helpful, my math lab taught me more than she did. Recommend buying the note packet, makes class much easier.
I felt utterly disrespected in this class. As a professor, she's decent, but that's not the problem, it's her attitude. She's rude, yells and belittles people, and runs her class like its a military camp. Look, I understand she doesn't want students taking advantage of her, but we are all adults and deserve to be treated like adults, not children
Lots of homework due everyday at 7pm. If you have a job and plan on taking this class, just switch because she does not care. very bad teacher. yells and belittles for asking questions
Professor Kurtz is the worst professor I have had so far this year. She doesn't care if you learn the material as long as SHE gets through the lecture. Very disrespectful when asking questions in person or through email, and it is not uncommon for her to yell at students who ask questions. She gives examples but they don't help at all with the work
She's not a bad professor. Class is REQUIRED! (5% of your grade) Mathlab is 2 hours and no exceptions! (it can be a little much at times) Mymathlab is key to your success in this class. Homework twice a week and one quiz a week. Good luck!
In the beginning I really didnt like her but she grew on me. I actually learned a lot in this class and feel prepared for 1550. The tests are exactly like the practice ones. If shes in the mathlab shed rather have a one on one with you than whatever she was doing. She might yell at you for asking a question in class though so save it for after
You have to go to the math lab for about 2-3 hours every week. She wasn't a bad prof., just very blunt and to the point. She is caring about needing help from her. Everything is accessible online, I would recommend buying the notes for her class because you won't have time to write them down. I only had 4 tests + a final exam but lots of homework.
Prof Kurtz is passive-aggressive and slightly rude, but she prepared you very well for this class. The practice test were copies of the real exams, so just do them a few times and you will be fine. Going to the math lab is SUPER annoying but it forces you to get work done. Overall an easy class just kind of a pain in the butt.
As a teacher, Mrs. Kurtz is a great teacher. She does not like BS questions that could be found on the board but she explains things clearly and concisely. The homework is a lot and the tests can get hard but this is a standard class with the same amount of homework no matter the 1021 professor.
Only had to meet once a week. Very good at explaining the material and teaching. Answers emails and questions fast.
Prof. Kurtz's class was not too difficult. While I hardly learned anything in the class, MyMathLab taught the material efficiently. Also, TAKE THE PRACTICE TESTS!! those are very similar to the actual exam so you know exactly what to expect.
She only has one lecture a week, and her grading policy is the same as the rest of the 1021 teachers. Her teaching style is really lecture heavy and normally early morning, but in order to understand you must go to class. The tests are easy if you do the homework and quizzes.
Mrs. Kurtz is a good teacher. She provides students with many examples in class. Attendance is mandatory and is a grade. 4 tests and a final which can replace your lowest test grade. If you complete all the homework and quizzes and do the practice tests before each test, you will get an A in the class.
I thought she was a good teacher at first, but she got harder as time went on. She goes through lectures so fast and doesn't care to take the time to actually explain it. Her homework is 40 problems each and took me hours to do because I had to teach myself the material.
Her lectures are rushed so be prepared to spend hours learning on MML.
Lacks the ability to explain problems to students. Teaches as if the course is basic knowledge and everyone should catch on easily. Teaches using examples, but instead of verbally explaining each step in detail she treats each problem like a tutorial/walkthrough. Very fast paced with all math problems. Treats questions like a crime.
She took the time to really teach the material in a concise and easy-to-understand way. I took her class over zoom and there were really no barriers that made it a struggle. Highly recommend!
Her lectures are very rushed, but overall a pretty good professor.
For being the math coordinator you would expect a better teaching style. She rushes through everything and is not fond of questions.
If only Professor Muffoletto was still teaching 1021. Not a single math professor is at his level. Kurtz does little to no effort to actually help you understand the material. She rushes through the material and does not care to explain the steps thoroughly.
Not a fan of the 9PM Pearson deadlines and mandatory Math Lab participation as well as the rushed lectures lacking concept explanations. She also doesn't like questions that much. Do the practice exams over and over and you should be fine, but don't be like me and cram before ANY test, you'll get a 70 at best.
Professor Kurtz was a game changer for me because I suck at math. She has a very blunt personality so it can throw people off, but she's good at what she does. Math 1021 has a strict curriculum and all have the same amount of homework as well as hours in the mathlab. But overall, if you are scheduling for Math 1021/1022 professor, pick her.
Gives lots of homework. You must be very organized and have impeccable time management skills. She's very helpful and responds quickly.
Being a lover of math, Kurtz made me hate it. She does not explain things well and her personality is the worse I have ever had in a professor. Prepare to teach yourself on assignments. Also I DESPISE that homework and quizzes are due at 9pm ALWAYS. I am in her trig class as of right now and nothing has changed. I was forced to take her again lol.
This professor is absolutely awful. There is never enough time in the class to actually learn so you basically teach yourself. She talks down on her students and answers any question rudely. She also couldn't provide me a required notetaker the entire semester. I eventually gave up asking. Lots of HW and a quiz every week. Be ready to cry.
She is an awful professor. Always has an attitude when asked simple questions. I was 0.30 points short of passing the class and all she said was, there was nothing that could be done. She will sometimes go days without responding to emails and the lectures are very rushed. You will not learn anything in class so get a tutor & get familiar with MML.
The content is really only available for you to teach yourself and attend hours in the math lab that will take you past your limit. She gets very defensive whenever you email her about an issue. She is very honest about the difficulty towards the course and doesn't she show empathy for late assignments. Be on top of your work.
Everything was done in MML - for me, it was about 6 hours of homework every single night. 2 dropped HW and 1 dropped Quiz.
Im still taking this professor as of writing this. Her attitude towards helping people in need of understanding the subject is foul and condescending and her lectures are very fast-paced/unlearnable. Every lecture has caused knuckle bruises on my writing hand due to how fast she goes through the material with no thorough explanation
in math1022 she relies on the math lab to help you and the online program(my lab math). If you are not good with teaching yourself, she's horrible.
Every Math 1020/2021 class is heavy on homework no matter what professor you get but, some are more lenient when it comes to due dates. In class, she doesn't necessarily teach you how to do the math, she just works through problems.
She does not teach in class and barely does examples; if she does, she rushes through them and states that you should know this already; math lab became my best friend.
fails to teach on multiple levels, only does a few reviews and calls it for class and doesn't expand on it at all
I was originally scared to take her because of the reviews, but i actually did great in the class. you HAVE to do you work, you can't expect to not do you work and get good grades in this class! have good time management and stay on top of your work!
I disliked this class. The final is worth 25% of your grade and getting an 82% on it brought my grade from an A all semester to a B as my final. No curves or extra credit. Its way too much work for the credit hours and I spent 3+ hours on most assignments. I worked so hard in this class just to end with a B. Kurtz can be moody and not veryhelpful.
The math questions in this class IS ALL OPEN ENDED it is NOT multiple-choice. TERRIBLE. Any little mistake is WRONG. And if you ask her a question in Moodle she'll just recite the syllabus. And then you have to go back and forth for every assignment "verifying" that you've done it the work on another site. PLEASE avoid "MyMathLab" at all costs!
Kurtz is a tough but effective professor. Expect lots of homework - you'll need strong time management skills. Studying with unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
run while you can. you will be doing 6+ hours of homework a night. this prof made my life miserable. won't give you a lick of help, either.
She must bathe in student tears. 45-65 questions for EACH homework assignment. You will pull many all nighters especially if you are employed or have kids. Your tests are 60% of your grade and you are NOT allowed to use a formula sheet or notes on tests. Absolutely ridiculous that a formula sheet can't be used!
Horrible. She's not very inviting, and her test percentage is high. So, if you happen to fail 2-4 of your tests, you're cooked. There are loads and loads of homework, so if you have a choice, DO NOT TAKE HER!
I almost quit LSU due to this course. It is not designed with the working class adult in mind. I spent around 3 Hours a day on Homework (about 15 hours per week) for just one class. Each Homework assignment is around 60 questions, but most questions have 3-5 parts (A, B, C, D, E) which makes it around 90-100 questions.
Professor Kurtz teaches very fast and rushes through math problems. Sometimes, she is okay with you asking questions, but other times she is very annoyed with simple questions. Also, she may not answer your emails. If you like to be taught at a unhurried pace, this is not the professor for you. Grading is very clear, AND TAKE PRACTICE EXAMS!!!
Everyone on this page is just bitter because they didn't wanna do work. She was fine. She taught well. She was available. The course structure sucks but that isn't her fault. I would take another class with her. I did my homework and then did fine in the course.
dear lord do not take her class
She is not hard, just do the work and you'll get the grade
You can retake HW and Quizzes as many times as you want. You have to put work in to get a good grade.
Kurtz was easy for me because I went into the class knowing a bunch about trig, but a TON of my friends were struggling because she's not the best at actually teaching the material. Rather, she will copy down her notes without actually explaining how she got the answer. I thought her class was fine, but I'd say go with another professor.
