If you have a desire for learning about historical events, her lectures will keep you glued to your seat and you will want more in the end. She's also a genuine and understanding person. Assignments are easy and she offers lots of extra credit.

she is very closed minded and thinks she is teaching at a major university
Don't listen to these whiners. She doesn't baby her expectations down and teaches like she takes her classes seriously as college level. Take her class if you have self respect.

This "professor" is very close-minded and hard to follow. If you like a professor that lectures the entire time, this is the professor for you. Projects are irrelevant and umcomprehensible. Also this professor is out of touch with the Western way of life here in California. She just plain sucks.
I took her for both classes because she is very clear in her lectures. very easy to follow, no problems at all. she's nice and at times, funny. the class has some work, but it's fun.
The class was boring there was little work, but for one 12 page paper take my advice dont take this class
There was a ton of work, but the teacher is fair and helpful.
Not an easy instructor, but LOVED her class!!
Prof. Lamphere is a great teacher! She's very knowledgeable and gets you interested in history! She gives you a syllubus with studyguide, they're so easy to fill out-everything on it is on the test! it's a cinch! ohh, and there's a paper, but it's easy, just do the work!
If you want to get prepped for a 4 year university, take her. I took her for both classes and she does expect alot, but she does guide you through the term paper by making you do prep work. I'm at Sac State now and I'm much better prepped for my coursework now that I've been through her class
Lamphere is fair and honest, she tells you her expectations and that she doesn't except any excuses and she lives up to it, it was so nice to hear a teacher say something and follow through with it! Her lectures are well structured and spoken, and if you do the work youll get an A.
She's a good teacher, she lectures in a way you can understand & learn easily. She gives u this study guide @ the beginning of the term, w/ALL of the topics that r n the test! The only bad thing is the 10 pg research paper, but there is all these little assigments that make it easy @ the end 2 write
this was the worst history class i have ever taken and i am majoring in history. she gives a 12 page research paper, do not take the class. she was boring as well, also hard to get a good grade. i really disliked this class. get Dafoe!
great lectures, HARD class. you have a 10-12 page essay at the end of class, and TONS of prepwork before it. lots of work, but interesting.
whoever thinks you won't write 10 page papers at a 4 year university, you need help. She walks you through how to write a good paper at university level. Yeah, it's a lot of work. Get with the program people. Take Prof. Lamphere and you'll be much more prepared when you transfer.
Yes, there was a 10-12 page research paper, but it's actually rather easy if you just put a slight amount of effort and intelligence into writing it. Good, interesting lectures and discussions. I was looking forward to the class going into it, and I wasn't disappointed.
Lamphere is a pretty good history teacher. She has pretty thorough lectures and her tests arent that hard, plus she always does xtra credit assignments. As for her paper, its not that hard even though its 12 pgs. If oyu do all the pre req stuff for the paper, it counts for most of your grade and it makes the paper really easy to write.
One of the best professors at S.C.!
be careful on papers i got a's on all but one of my papers because on the last one she told me that i was off topic even though she had already opproved my outline. i got an F for being off topic and had to really crunch the last few weeks to get a decent grade.
Really good history teacher, if you're interested in history (like it's your major) then definitely take Lamphere. You'll learn a lot and there's no BS. If you just want to cruise through your history take Noy, he's easier and you'll get a good grade but learn less. Cooper is a stickler and he rambles so his lectures suck.
She's not THAT hard. 10 page paper was a nightmare though, the extra CRAP at the end was ****. (Major time consumption in citing things how she wanted.) Some in class group work. Nice lady.
She is really nice and a very thorough teacher. The big fatty essay wouldnt be so bad if she didnt place so many restrictions on sources and require so much preparation to be turned in. Group disscussions suck cuse not everyone prepares or writes reports for them like they are told to.
Her class was not student friendly. The only cool thing about Ms. Lamphere is her M3.
She is very strict about spelling and missing little details will lose points big time. The 10-12 research paper was a chaos especially the sources requirements are way to much time taking. I had to drop it because didn’t want to get a C after missing few details on the source paper. Not recommended.
EASY EASY EASY! Strict about spelling & grammer and turning in all assigned work. Tests are multiple choice & fill in the blank. Book for this class sucked.
the class isn't that hard, but the ridiculous research paper, and it's horrible writing style sucked. classwork pads you grade, and tests aren't that hard if you work hard on the review sheet she gives out at the start of the semester
You guys are so pathetic about the research paper. Once you transfer to a university, there's a good chance you will be writing at least two 10 page papers per semester if you are lucky, and they won't walk you through how to write it. if you can't do it, they will let you know and fail you. suck it up and learn something
She was probably one of the best history teachers i have ever had, her love of the subject is clear and she teaches the material, and then also throws in fun and interesting facts. ya the term paper is hard, but you would have to write on in any hist class.
Excellent instructor. Clearly enjoys her subject, and is very well informed. Excellent interaction with students, and keeps lectures upbeat by incorporating group exercises, and encourages class participation. Sierra College's best history instructor!
classwork pads your grade, the paper sucks because of the subject material, and the tests can be hard if you don't make an effort
She's really passionate about the topics she teaches, but it's still difficult to pass the class with an A or B. The research paper is totally ridiculous...she'd be a better english teacher because she is focused more on the format and spelling errors than on the actual content. Also she is very unforgiving if you are absent, even if it's excussed.
Her class is NOT hard to pass with an A or B. The research paper is long and tedious but she grades it fairly as long as you can write a college-level paper. As far as attendance, she only takes it about once a month. You do need an interest for the material to enjoy the class, though.
tests were hard, but a study guide is provided...THE PAPER IS RIDICULOUS...she grades it like a high school english teacher. she doesn't care about you ideas as much as your grammar and punctuation i am very good at writing and typically excellent at history and i struggled to get a "b" take defoe or leonhardt if possible
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT *ALL* COSTS. She is BORING. TEDIOUS. And the research paper you HAVE TO DO is ABSOLUTELY REDICULOUS! She acts more like an ENGLISH TEACHER than a HISTORY TEACHER. F-. NO THANK YOU. I had to get OUT OF THERE. Do NOT take this teacher. *A*V*O*I*D*
this class is crap

picks at every detail on papers turned in i'm mean every single one from a comma to a period. Grades down hard.
Great teacher. Many people on here complain about the essay but this is college, you will have to write 10pg essays all the time. The good thing is that she spends a lot of time going through the steps in writing the paper and even makes some of the steps assignments. Tests were not hard. She provides a study packet that covers the tests. Easy A.
i took her my freshman year and actually got a good grade.she was a horrible professor. she takes the research paper way too seriousy. and to all of you people saying thats how it is in college, you're wrong. i go to UCLA now and if stephanie were to teach here, she would be an absolute joke. no one stresses that much on stupid stuff like she does.

I took her last spring. Great teacher to say the least. One ten page paper, big deal, no sweat. I am at UC Davis right now and if you plan on going to a university, you WILL have to write long papers all of the time. She walks you through the paper and most of the class is spent on it. It's not a big deal at all. She's an all around great teacher.
Isn't clear with assignments, expects you to know more then what she is teaching you
very nice prof. Wants to help out in any way she can. The term paper is a bit long but she gives you a chance to turn a rough draft in and grade it like she is grading the actual paper. Tests can sometimes be alittle confusing but overall she gives you a study packet. People who are saying she is way too hard, my highschool teacher was way harder
Sucks to be you if your in this class!!!
She's knowledgable and a good teacher but there is alot of reading. Her lectures are very basic. There is a ten page research paper and she is tough on plagerism. she is understanding but sticks to her rules and guidelines. I learned alot but the tests are hard if you dont study. She gives helpful study guides tho.
HORRIBLE!! dont take her. unless youre a total suck up to her. she will be completely unfari with you..her grading is completely subjective..she has a total attitude with you if you even try to question her grading on something..i am an a student with a 3.8 gpa..and there was no way this teacher was gonna let me get away with anything more than a c
Online, easy. Straight-forward, 3 tests, gave a study guide that was almost the test, only one paper that was really short. Discussion Board was a big part, you had to do about 3 or more, but as long as you partipated you were fine. Read the lectures and chapters and do the DB and you have an A.
How this woman is a professor i will never know...she got very upset with me when i corrected her once and hated me after that...i mean, you can't fail someone's paper when they do it!i usually LOVE hisotry...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. she sucks. she acts like she wants to help you but it's SO not true. she's totally unfair.
Use the study guide and you'll get a great grade. Many whiners in class fail because they don't want to study, but it's easy to make an A. If you're there to learn then you'll have fun. This is a true college class, not an extension of high school.
Really enjoyed her as a teacher! I had her two semesters in a row and both classes were great! Study and do the work and you'll get a good grade. Sorry to thoes who didn't like her, but her rules and expectations are pretty forward so if you didnt do well in the class it's YOUR FAULT NOT HER'S!!
Fantastic teacher!!! Expectations are cearly laid out in her packet that she gives to the class for free. Do the work and you will get an A. To all the people that had problems with her I find that vey hard to believe. She is by far one of the nicest people I have met.
Good Instructor very helpful. Only 3 essays and mostly lectures and reading. Must attend lectures and read chapters.
Covers everything to know quickly, and on top of that gives a study sheet with everything that will be on the test. As long as you have no problem reading a little, an easy class. I was reading the opinions here, and my experience did not see a problem with any information I added to her class, and she actually seemed to enjoy additional info.
Great teacher. Very clear with assignments and what is expected of you. A 10 page research paper is mandatory with this class, but she walks you through the paper. In addition, all tests are given a study guide. If you study and do the work given, you will get a good grade.
She is a really good teacher. The class is very straightforward.3 Essays, part multiple choice part short answer, 4 Essays, a few in class activities, and no homework. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss a class you tend to miss a lot. She is really strict about cell phones, but other than that she is nice. I actually learned a lot.
Very hard testes. endless amount of reading material! She nice i think but too stick and hard
Not an interesting class. Not a very interesting teacher. Expects you to read the book, cover to cover, and the syllabus, and the endless pages of online reading for which she will pop quiz you later. Avoid at all costs. If you got to have her, good luck.
The class lectures are extremely boring and if you have to make sure to write down everything that she's saying along with everything she writes on the board. Theres 3 tests and the study guides are ridiculous to complete. It's so much information that you have to know. She's super nice and willing to help, but this is definitely not an easy class
Shes a good teacher. her classes are interesting. she makes you write 4 essays and grades them pretty hard. three tests, their hard unless you do the study guide. i would take her class again!
This woman has an inability to say anything interesting at all, ever. Not quite sure what her deal is, but she is the dullest teacher I've ever had the misfortune of being subjected to. Be prepared to memorize the book, cover-to-cover if you want her favor.
She is an excellent professor who works hard to prepare students for transferring to a 4-yr university. After taking one class with her I loved her class so much I took two more classes with her! I would've taken more if the classes had fit in my schedule. Her papers and guidance prepared me for 15 page papers that were common place at University.
I took this class online. She gives a lot of reading and requires discussion board activity, but if you do the work it's an easy class. She gives VERY helpful study guides for all 3 tests. 3 easy essays with very clear guidelines. Everything she sends out is REALLY wordy so it looks intimidating, but you get used to it and she's very helpful.
I took this class online and it wasn't too bad. You have to read the textbook and lectures. Must participate in DB 3 times per week. 3 essays. 3 tests. not too bad but you do have to read and study!
She's know her history, that's for sure. However, she should not be teaching. Her DB question format is nonsense and she does not take accountability for her mistakes.
Learned a lot about early U.S. history in this online class. Expectations are high from this knowledgable professor. If a student does the work to meet those expectations, history will be learned. Highly recommend this professor for online students who enjoy study and learning more than simply accumulating credits.
As everyone has mentioned, there is a lot of reading, they just don't emphasis EXCESSIVE and NOT NECESSARY. Yes, her instructions are VERY "WORDY". To help anyone I can, this is not a class for full-time students or those that work. If you must choose this professor BE PREPARED TO PUT A LOT OF TIME IN reading and sorting through her materials.
Shes a good history professor who is really interested in the stuff. I just wished the told more interesting stories from history. Had her for Russian hist tho so idk
Professor Lamphere knows her history...there's no doubt about that! My biggest advice is FOLLOW HER STUDY GUIDE! know the details of each item on the study guide and the story behind it and you will do fine. i didnt even read the chapters, but rather focused my attention strictly off the study guide and got an A. dont be overwhelmed. :)
I took her online class. The hardest teacher i ever had. I took many clases online but never strugle like I did with her. I feel like she was never please with any your work. And for disc.board she take off point for grammer and sppeling. It was hard class for me and I am a A's student, study hard all the time.
Spends all her time with boring lectures. Your grade is based on 3 essays, 3 tests, and 7 reading quizzes which are impossible to pass unless you read the book. She offers a study guide that covers everything on the tests. Her class is VERY EASY if you explain things in your essays well and do the whole study guide and use it
Prof. Lamphere really knows her stuff. Her lectures are very informative and she doesn't just lecture straight from the book. Grades are based on 3 tests (multiple choice, short answer, essay) which she gives a study guide for, and 3 essays. More than willing to walk you through essays or anything you need help with. Best class I ever took.
Great teacher. Always in a good mood, lectures are interesting especially if you're into history. Tests aren't too difficult and she offers extra credit on every test. I've gotten over 100% on every test. As long as you take half way decent notes and do the weekly reading the class is child's play. Highly recommended!
Prof. Lamphere is absolutely horrible. This class is impossible to get a good grade. I did all of the work, studied my butt off for tests and she failed me on everything. I'm an A student and struggled to get just a C in the class. I have 3 friends in her class who said the same. She is an extremely hard grader and tests are ridiculous. Dont take!!
Worst teacher ever. Online class was hard and she never seemed to give a good grade. no matter how hard you worked for it. Studied hard for every test and never got higher than a C, mainly D & F.. And im normally an A or B student. Passed the class with my first C in college. Such a joke. Lowered my GPA
I don't know why majority of reviews are bashing on her and the class. She was clear, organized, friendly, barely ever assigned hw, provided a study guide with exactly what will be on the test, and the daily classes just consisted of interesting lectures. What more do you want?
She is very nice, no doubt about that. The only problem with her is she is an extremely hard grader. Her study guides are kind of confusing and I usually get A's or B's in History, but with her I think I got a C or D. The reason I say I THINK is because she takes forever to put grades in on Blackboard. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU HAVE OTHER OPTIONS.
She's a great teacher. She does her best to make sure you understand the material and pass her class. I took her a year ago and recommended her to my friends who took her last semester. They agree she's a great teacher! The material is easy if you read the book and attend class. Her tests are based off study guides. It's almost impossible to fail.
I loved taking her class. She made it very interesting and knew what she was talking about. Her tests are right off the study guide, but you need to read the book in detail in order to find the study guide answers. Made studying for the tests easy with crosswords in class and word finds. Take her if you can, she makes class fun!
Great teacher! Challenging class for sure, but its in a good way. She sets the class up in a way that makes you actually learn the info. She was helpful, clear on what she wanted, and the study guides made it really easy to pass the test. I really enjoyed learning from her class though and cant wait to take her next semester!
Stephanie is an OK but boring teacher. Requires you to submit papers online, which she even acknowledges is buggy and awkward to do, yet doesn't allow late credit in the event it fails. I turned in my second paper, it didn't register, she refused to give any credit even though i turned in a physical copy the next day as required. Id avoid her class
I took her online class and it was really hard. She is BIG on details and dates. If you are late on anything you don't get any credit. She doesn't care about her students and is all about the rules. READ EVERY DOCUMENT!! I couldn't be more clear on that. It could be the difference between an A and a fail. I recommend not taking her online class.
She is very clear about what is expected from the very first day. Detail oriented, lots and lots of reading and make sure you do not fall behind. Stay focused and you will do well. I enjoyed the class and felt that I walked away with a much clearer understanding of History. Do not take if you do not want to work for your grade.
I've taken two classes with her and absolutely loved it! Yes her classes are not easy, but you do learn a lot. She gives extra credit on the tests and for random things throughout the semester. She gives a study guide and an in class review that are easy points. Lectures are very interesting and easy to follow. There's about a chapter a week to read and a few articles, but very good teacher overall and will help her students if they ask for it :)
Professor Lamphere is very helpful and knowledgable. She really makes stuff intersting and is always available for help. Textbook reading is mandatory. She provides a study guide for each exam and you need to know everything on the study guide. I highly recommend her. Amazng Teacher.
Took online. It's a pretty hard class. Disc boards are not easy, u have to do the reading. she makes u think plus u have to reply a lot. It's pretty much disc boards and tests. She gives an outline of everything on tests but the questions are very specific. U won't have time to look them all up in book.
I HAVE DONE ALL THE HOMEWORK ON TIME D+ still horrible rude assumes students are cheating gives feedback saying posted too late even according to her schedule fails students who log in 3x a week and do all the work and reading needs oversight from college administration because shes running this class into the ground with her attitude.
I had her for history 17A and she has really awesome lectures with interesting information. You don't have very many tests or papers, only 6 total. But you need to take really good notes on the powerpoints. You have to study and you'll pass.
I'm taking the time to rate this professor because she is truly a QUALITY professor. She has the class VERY well-organized, which is hard to find amongst many other professors! Her interest in the subject area is contagious! :) She is knowledgeable but not intimidating. She will probably be the BEST PROFESSOR I will ever have!!!
Ms Lamphere is a great online teacher. Expect good feedback on your writings but be sure to meet all the criteria and write well. If you care about her class she will care about helping you get a good grade in return. The content is interesting and well laid out, and the tests are tough- but you get a study sheet. Really great teacher.
This was a pretty easy online class, decent amount of work and 4 tests.
There are two grades you could give Lamphere: A for being a good teacher and B-C for opening the DB on Thursdays, expecting 1st reply by Sundays, but having only 3 office hours in the morning on Thursdays and none on Fridays. She only replied during office hours. Good luck if you are confused on the DB (there are a few) and don't ask in time.
She is amazing professor. NOT easy, and expects you to read, but also, for an online class, she has take ALOT of time to make extra writing and notes for you and you feel she is talking to you. She is also funny and heck. She will respond to emails fast, and have office hours and willing to work around for you. I will take as many classes from her.
This is an excellent instructor, bar none. For an online class, she puts as much information for you to read, and her writing is humorous and keeps you interested. She expects you to think, analyze, and write, and she is though, but even if you don't care for history, you appreciate the subject and the effort she puts in and your work has to match.
Professor Lamphere made me so interested in history! Her lectures are entertaining and easy to follow, one thing I would suggest to students would be READ THE TEXTBOOK. She does not lecture on everything going to be on the test which I think was a big misconception for some people. Tests require study time but you will do fine if you put in work.
Awesome online class. She has a VERY clear class schedule and if you follow it you will ace the class. Also, she is easy to email with, fast and clear answers.
Mrs. Lamphere is a good teacher. If you're not a history buff, this class can be pretty tough. The tests are pretty rough, and the study guides are incredibly long. This class requires a tremendous amount of studying. My only complaint is she offered extra credit to only a few students which isn't fair for others who wanted/needed it.
Very smart women, but very intense and unstructured exams/clas. The exam study guides are crazy, one study guide equals about 8 pages of material to memorize, not even an 1/4 of whic is on the exam. For a survey class there's a TON of material crammed down your throat, which made it hard to learn/focus on the important parts of west civilization.
I had taken 4A with Lamphere, attempted 4B with another teacher, but dropped that class and went back to Lamphere. Really, she's an excellent teacher. She has clear expectations and gives actual/useful clarification when asked. If you're looking for an easy A, you're in the wrong field. If you're looking for a GOOD history teacher: pick Lamphere.
This was my favorite class ever. Although there are a lot of writing assignments, the online class style is discussion based, so that was to be expected. Stephanie Lamphere get's an A+ and two thumbs up.
Loved this professor! Took her for a Russian History class and she was really passionate about the material. I learned a lot in that class, the papers & assignments were not too tough. Tests were fairly easy if you pay attention through the course. Would definitely take again!
This professor structures her online class in a very specific & smart way so that you are able to take the large amounts of reading & analytical thinking and get a thorough understanding of the topics. But be prepared to do the work! Her timeframes are very fair, realistic and set to help you manage you time that will be needed to retain & do well!
This was probably the worst class iv ever taken. She expects so much from you and doesn't teach well. Cares more about the grammar and punctuation than the information you're talking about. And the only thing you do in this class is write discussion boards seriously horrible. I didn't learn a thing.
Super strict on grading. Will mark you down for the smallest deviation away from her expectations. I took the online class and don't recommend it, so the on campus one might be even worse.
I'll be honest. I never found the class interesting, her discussion board posts required us to be extremely specific at times and the quizzes tend to have very similar answers. However, the nice thing about her is that she lets you take a quiz twice and the highest score is counted. She gives extra credit for doing a survey. Overall, she was "meh".
This class ruined my 4.0 GPA. I tried my hardest, but she expected too much from the discussion boards if she did not like your answer she would not give you full points. Overall the class was not too bad but the discussion boards were very difficult. I would not recommend taking this class!
Professor is very nit-picky about grading. She has very high expectations for her students and it is hard to ever get full points in her course. Lots of reading, but short lectures. Her exams are extremely difficult, and as a straight A student, I struggle to even get a C on her exams even after reading the lectures, study guide and textbook.
Professor Lamphere is a decent teacher, BUT has overly high expectations for her students considering this is history 17B. Lots of reading, short lectures, grades DB's super hard and her exams are difficult too. I am a straight A student, and have a very hard time on exams, even after reading all lectures, textbook information, and study guides.
Picky grader & high standards. She gives some feedback but is not very clear on how to improve. Quizzes are easy! Prepare with the study guide & you'll be fine. DB's are HARD. I follow prompt to a T, & earn low grades. She wants you to be super analytical. Only 2 types of assignments: Quizzes-50pts, DB's-60pts. Miss 1 thing? Grade drops a lot!!
I took her class online, my main gripe is her discussion boards. She is VERY tough on them and writing a well written and supported post (by her own admission) does not guarantee a good grade for the DB. She nit picks and often seemingly has a certain idea of what she wants that is not conveyed to the students through the assignment description.
