She sucks at teaching concepts. Doesn't know what she is talking about much of the time, gets lost in her own work and doesn't explain herself. She has an amazing TA who rocks but she has crazy policies and makes her tests as confusing as possible. Oh well, I gotta take this class. Good luck for all yawls stickin with her like me.
Good teacher in my opinion. Can be slightly confusing but most teachers are. Tests can be tough. TA lab helps.

She wants to help... she just isn't a good teacher. Super nice lady though, but don't take the class. It's long and horribly boring, but I guess because it's two and a half hours long and it's at night. Tests are ridiculous, aren't anything like the homework... she did get better near the end of the semester though.
I had her for her first semester teaching- she struggled a little bit, but improved a lot through the semester. You can expect her to be better in the future. Her grading is EXTREMELY fair and she wants you to succeed. If you do your part, it will all work out. The class was pretty easy and I learned a lot.
This lady has NO idea what she's talking about, half the time the students in class who had read ahead in the book were correcting her. She's nice and all, but doesn't have a CLUE what she's talking about.
Horrible teacher, I remember the time we had the day section teahcer and i learned more from that class than all the rest, the book taught me.
The woman has NO idea what's she's talking about. I had taken half of PHSCS 105 from a different prof. the previous semester but had to withdraw for medical reasons; THIS class with her proved to be much harder, the students in the class knew way more than she did, if you're confident in physics, go for it, but don't expect much help from her
Does she even have a PhD?
yeah alot of people says she is a bad teacher, not prepared, and unclear... I learned a great deal in her class, she has a great grading system, and is willing to help her students. Make study groups for sure. she has a bad rep, but I thought she was a great teacher and I'm planning on taking phys 106 from her
Dr. Magleby is better at explaining things conceptually than technically. If you expect to attend class and not put in any other work than you may have a tough time. If you do the reading, work with the TAs and attend class she can really help you understand and learn the material.
Awesome demonstrations. Her explanations, however, too often consisted of just giving the exact procedure for one specific homework problem, which didn't help when homework consisted of slight variations on that theme.
She was an excellent teacher with a profound interest in the learning of her students. She was more than willing to put in the extra time to help us understand.
Prof. Magleby is a great teacher, she is very knowledgable about the subject matter and truly enjoys it, which makes it a little easier for the rest of it. Really nice lady.
Really nice lady and probably a decent teacher in things she knows better, but did not seem to have a clue regarding dynamics. Most of the students stopped coming to class because it was so useless to try to understand her. I normally rely heavily on in class lecture-didn't learn as much as I had hoped. Constantly mixed up variables and confusing.
She has an genuine interest in teaching but she has no teaching skills. She would often spend 20 or more minutes or more trying to figure out her notes and what she was saying. We were totally unprepared for exams because we would never finish the material. Class was a farce and its the only class I feel I should be refunded for my tuition.
She is a scatter brain and half the time she was being corrected by the students in the class. The most useful part of class is when she shows you how to do 1 or 2 of the homework problems, but I found myself in the TA lab most of the time to get help anyways.
If you can learn everything you think you will need on your own take it from her, it will make your class load a little lighter, if you want someone to really teach you she might not be the best. Although she will help you one-on-one as much as she can.
People are too hard on this professor. She had lecture notes that outlined exactly what you needed to know. Test questions were sometimes directly from the pre-tests. It's not hard if you study. This class was easy in comparison to physics 105 that I took from another professor. I recommend her over the others.
Easiest Physics class you will ever take at BYU. She keeps things organized and even prints out how to work out the most missed problems on each test. She shows you exactly how to do the problems so you can get through the homework faster. Her method of collecting homework can be a pain for a week or so though. Highly Recommended!
Professor Magelby worked together with Dr. Christensen so our section was never too far off from theirs, and as long as you studied the Exam Files that are provided for you, the tests are not so bad. Sometimes, she could be confusing, but she tries really hard to make the class interesting and interactive.
By far the worst professor I have ever had (over 160 credits). Does she even prepare for class? She cant keep things straight in her head and consistently was confused while doing her own example problems. Doesnt offer much help when asked. Doesnt seem at all concerned with how her students are doing. Physics is great, she definately is not!
Words cannot explain how frustrating, how irritating, and how utterly ridiculous this teacher is.I'm almost ready to graduate with close to a 4.0 majoring in neuroscience.I have had a lot of "bad teachers".This professor is on a level of her own that I didn't think was even possible... I really wish this site would allow negative number ratings...
She has all Dr. C's notes, and follows them pretty closely. Statics really isn't that hard, but I can honestly say that I learned EVERYTHING from the TA's. She's a physicist (not the greatest I've heard) teaching an engineering class and it doesn't really work out for her. Studying the Exam file is helpful, but she always throws something wacky in.
Prof Magleby is a cool person, but can be kinda ditsy. The tests are fair, and the hw is reasonable. She uses all of Dr. C's notes, which is very helpful. The test files in the notes are super helpful for the tests. all-in-all I probably would not take another class from Prof Magleby. Good person, but not a teacher by nature.
Very nice lady, but kind of spastic in lectures. However, even if lectures confuse you, she'll help you out of class. She tells you exactly what will be on the test, and makes it easy to get an A if you prepare adequately. She may not be the most clear lecturer, but she makes up for it in how easy she makes tests and tells you what will be on them.
seeing how there are not any decent 106 professors at BYU go ahead and take her class. she has iclicker quizes but they are only worth 2.5% so its not really worth going to class.
Very nice lady, buuuuuut... I can't understand her hlaf the time, she gets off topic easily, and everything that I have learned in this class,... I learned from spending hours in the Physics lab. Not in her class
Prof. Magelby is the way to go if you are good with science, maybe a little tough if you have a hard time with science classes. She is a fair teacher and gives plenty of opportunities to get a good grade. You will mostly learn by doing the homework, but she hooks you up as far as test content goes.
This class was so easy that next semester she has to grade on the curve. She is very nice and cares about students. She is not as bad as all the comments have been. It was a bit difficult knowing what would be on the tests - I had a spread of about 25%. The final is not cumulative - which is nice. Her practice tests are really helpful.
Overall a pretty easy class. I'm pretty sure I fell asleep in every lecture and was still able to manage an A-. Next semester the department is requiring her to grade on a curve: that's how easy it was. ]The practice tests definitely help with the tests. (Don't go to lecture, you'll just be more confused.)
I loved Prof Magelby. She really wants her students to succeed. Her teaching methods seemed much clearer to me than the prof I had for 105. She tries to explain things in everyday terms by using analogies. I highly recommend taking physics from her, especially if physics isn't your thing. Make use of the pre-tests. They are very helpful.
She was extremely helpful outside class and was very considerate of her students. She didn't always explain things extremely well though.
Prof Magleby CANNOT teach. It seemed like every class she had forgot something or didn't have enough copies for every student. She was very unorganized and was often corrected by her students. This class is very easy though, if you have any background if physics its an easy A. Just do your HW in the TA offices and learn from them.
Magleby is super nice. Yes, it's true that she can sometimes lack clarity at times, but if you're willing to put in the time, it will work out. She is very understanding to her students and tries to do her best. She has an awesome grading system that helps your grade a lot. I recommend her.
Easily the worst professor I've had at BYU, and I've been here 5 years. She told us water is more compressible than air for crying out loud. She would do well in HS, but simply is not a college level teacher. Avoid.
Magleby's really not as bad as some of these ratings are saying she is. She's really a decent teacher. As long as you do the homework, get help in the physics tutor lab if you need it, and study, you should be fine. Her practice tests were helpful and she was really nice.
She's way nice and wants you to succeed, but is horrible at explaining concepts. The homework is harder than her in class examples and the tests are harder than then the homework. I always felt like she was trying to trick us on tests. In class, she quickly moves through examples assuming you can fill in the blanks making it hard.
She assumes that you already know everything from Physics 112 even though it isn't a perquisite. However, if you go and talk to her she is more than willing to do a private lesson to try and help you understand. Doing homework with the TA's is a must. (CEEn 103)
The grading for the class did not show how well the students new the course. All the tests were timed and not multiple choice. I advise to take the homework seriously and finish it quickly. The teacher was very nice but the classes seemed boring. If you have trouble go to the TA they are helpful.
She's a really good professor. She honestly cares about the comprehension level of her students. Her class handouts made it so you could pay more direct attention to the lecture without having to frantically write your notes. I noticed there were some students that seemed to hate her guts but I think that attitude is completely unfounded.
Great Teacher! She is constantly helping us see the reason as to why we are doing what we are doing. And she is always there to help. TAs are a definite must though if you want to get a good grade.
She is a very good professor. This class is difficult, but if you go to the TA lab to do the homework, you shouldn't have too many problems. She is very friendly and outgoing.
I grew to like Professor Magleby as the semester went on. It is a hard class, because she expects a a lot of high-quality work. But once you get the hang of it, it isn't too bad.
I really liked this class. It did require work, time, and attending the TA lab quite often. Prof Magleby does a good job teaching the principles in everyday, easy to grasp terms. In my physics 121 class we learned a lot of the same things but they made a lot more sense in Statics. I highly recommend taking the class when she is teaching it.
Sh is a really nice lady, but her teaching style is not that great. She gets distracted by people's questions on the easy stuff and never spends much or any time on the more difficult concepts/probles. The homework had nothing to do with what's on the tests. She is a nice lady, but I don't suggest the class if you really want to learn material.
Great pre-req class! Take advantage of the online homework - print out the solutions and understand them. Hard at first, but the work becomes really easy. Prof M is kind. Go down to the TA lab, even if you are intimidated. If you want to, skip class to go to the lab. The TAs are great, you meet people, and you finish homework fast.
Professor Magleby is the most unprofessional teacher I have ever had at BYU. She always seemed unprepared for class, disorganized, and almost every class she apologized for something she had done wrong or taught incorrectly. I'm not a bitter student, and I feel I put in a lot of effort for my grade, but would never take a class from her again.
I really dont know why anybody doesnt like Magleby. She is suuuper friendly, here homework is due the same day every week which is nice. She lets you know what will be on the test, no surprises. HW is reasonable, it will take about 3-4 hrs per week, but go to the TA lab and its easy and you meet a lot of people there.
She is a great teacher and cares enough about her students to learn all of our names! The class is easy enough if you have taken plenty of physics. The TA lab is very helpful when it comes to homework layout and difficult problems.
Sister Magleby is awesome! It is a hard class, but she doen't make it that way, that's just the subject. Class attendance might not be mandatory, but you will do a whole lot better in the class if you do attend. During the first few weeks, she memorizes everyone's name. If you have trouble understanding a problem, use the TA lab, they don't bite.
Professor Magleby simply isn't an effective teacher. She's a nice person, but her teaching style is often disorganized, frequently incoherent, and seldom interesting. I'd be terrified to enter the workforce with the low level of understanding she instills in her students. I learned more about static systems in my high school physics class. Avoid.
I don't think she should be teaching at BYU at all. She was very condescending. She can't teach at all, and everything has to be done her way or it's wrong. If she ever gets off her high horse, she may eventually be a good teacher. After learning the subject, that is.
Sister Magelby's a good lady, but a terrible professor. She focuses on computationally difficult problems, rather than actually trying to understand what's going on. Her tests and homework don't actually gauge understanding, just time spent. One of the poorest classes I've taken in my life.
One of the worst professors I've had to date! It seemed like every lecture there was some form of miscommunication, misinformation, or misunderstanding. She explains things in such a round-about way that I was very tempted to stop going to class and just go to the TA lab instead. They could explain in 10 minutes what she failed to do in an hour.
This class is just a difficult one on principle. I think the other comments are pretty harsh. She's funny and interesting. She does admit to being human and making mistakes, sometimes frequently. But when she messes up, she tries to fix it as best she can! I would certainly go to the TA lab a lot, or I probably wouldn't have passed.
After 100 credits of mostly excellent university classes, hers is the second worst. While a kind woman, she cannot explain anything. Instead of showing many progressively more challenging examples, she's toss ONE horribly difficult example on the overhead and say, "turn to your neighbor and figure out this quiz." That's not teaching. AVOID!!!
Don't worry about the class, you can do it!
Not clear at all. what was taught in class often didn't help or apply to one or more of the homework assignments. learned more from online guided solutions than ever in class.
Good lecturer; TA lab is essential to passing; just go ahead and do all your homework in there instead of banging your head against the wall at home. Practice is key; the lectures really are good but you won't master anything without practice. Study the last couple of sections of class well before the final; detailed material does show up.
Tough class but still learned a lot. The most frustrating part of the class is how picky she is with the format of homework and free responses. You can lose quite a lot of points even if you get the right answer.
She is a really good teacher and willing to help students when they have questions, but sometimes does a poor job explaining things, which requires help from the TA's. The homework is pretty tough but the tests aren't as bad.
Professor Magleby is great. Always willing to help and the class is designed very well. She's really focused on helping students. Lacks a little bit in the clarity department and sometimes has trouble understanding students questions, but she genuinely wants to help and makes sure she's always available to do so. Defiantly would take again.
This class was rough. Grading is tough and you have to stay on top of assignments. Lectures are somewhat dull and only conceptual, but have daily attendance quizzes. Grades are rarely IF EVER updated and it's impossible to know how you're doing until the end of the semester. Plan on lots of time for assignments, and go to the TA lab.
Professor Magelby does not have a PhD, and I took her for both statics and dynamics, but only because she was the only option. The material is easy, but she's not a great teacher and makes a LOT of mistakes. I got 97% + on all exams except one that I failed. When I asked to see m test to see what I did wrong, I was informed that she lost my test.
Sister Magleby gives so many resources to help students to learn. She hires a ton of TA's that work anytime from the early morning to the night. She gives out handouts and was very accessible outside of class. She is very caring. Lots of homework. The people who give bad reviews are those who haven't taken responsibility for their own learning yet.
Nice lady. Shows Youtube videos to make it interesting. Very poor lecturer. Puts up solutions from the book and expects us to just understand how to do them. TAs are great. Gives very good study guides for tests. Dynamics is mandatory. You might not love it, but you can make it through. Homework takes a while #engineering. One fun project.
She doesn't seem to know what she is doing. Said many things that never ended up happening. Study with friends in the TA lab. The class is doable but not very organized. She is really nice but it's not a great class. Does give good material for test reviews. It's a doable class, it just kinda sucks.
She doesnt teach. She is the least capable professor I have ever had. Would have taken it from someone else if I could have. It is pointless to go to class because you learn nothing that actually helps. She only goes over basic things in class and then expects you to be able to perform miracles. Oh, and she is not an engineer
Lots of homework. Her lectures are not clear, she is a terrible teacher. You will lose points on tests and homework if you don't follow strict guidelines on how she wants it to be done even if the answer is correct. Bad teacher. Unfortunately she was the only option for this mandatory class.
Grades heavily on answers rather than comprehension. If you get the right answer but don't report in the right format, or forget units, or significanct digits are less than expected, then expect less than half credit. On midterms and exams, be sure to use the right paper, don't forget CID, and course ID or expect to be dropped two letter grades.
She has structured the class really well for you to learn everything outside of class, in the TA lab. Most of what you learn comes from one on one time with the TAs while working on the homework. Attendance isn't necessary, but she will give major hints as to what is on each exam so attending class is a plus.
She does a decent job explaining the material, but you definitely need to learn a lot of the concepts on your own and through the homework. There is a lot of work for the class, including reading assignments for each class. I feel like she cares about her students.
Prof. Magleby is an amazing woman. She's patient with her students and wants them to do well. She has a pretty clear structure, yeah it is strict, but if you follow it you will do well. Do the homework, go to the TA lab, and participate in class. Take it in the spring if possible. Test heavy--but don't be deceived, if you don't do it, you will die.
Prof Magleby is a good person but horrible lecturer. she couldn't explain concept well and expect you to figure out how to solve problems by your own. her class is totally pointless. her ability of teaching is worst i have ever seen in byu, and she just let you watch youtube video in the class.
Most of the grade comes from tests, but at least one problem on each test comes directly from the study guide. If you do the homework and listen to her hints in class, tests are very doable (4 hour time limit). The final project was easy, individual, and fun. She let us use the solutions manual when we got stuck, which I loved. Give her a chance.
Professor Magleby is a decent lecturer, going to class was worthwhile. She doesn't use the schools grading system so you don't know your grade until it's on your transcript. The homework takes a lot of time but prepares you well for the test. Take the time needed to do and understand the homework problems and you'll get a better grade than I did.
Lectures were mostly her repeating what the book said and working homework problems. Great if youre stuck on something, worthless if not. There were several problems with her grades on learning suite and mistakes on all three midterms. Annoying class but you can do well if you make sure to understand each homework and reading before you move on.
There is a lot of homework in this class in a lot of different places and the grading is pretty strict. She kept changing the syllabus and made it confusing to understand. Her lectures are pretty useless she spends a lot of time just talking and then will just pop up solutions on the overhead for you to look at so you don't learn a whole lot.
Professor Magleby is a good professor she teaches well and going to class is useful. However, this class has a ton of homework and there is a very strict format on how the homework should be done. Tests are also the majority of your grade 60% which makes this class quite a challenge. Going to the TA lab is a must if you want to do well.
The worst professor I have ever had at BYU. Going to her class confuses me more than I learn. I learned more effectively from the textbook. Spends most of her lectures working on problems from the book, but often gets lost and does not know what she is doing herself. I believe she only has this job due to her husband's position in the department.
Sister Magleby does her best to teach a difficult subject. That being said she tends to read and mark up her slides. I have taken dozens and dozens of pictures to "help with the homework" but they end up confusing me more. She had moments where she did teach a concept well. But most of the time I left confused. GO TO THE TA LAB!
I had no physics experience at all before this class and I did fine. She's a good teacher and cares for her students a lot. If you ask for help from her and go to the TA lab often you'll do fine in the class. There's a lot of HW and it has a strict format but it helps prepare you for the tests.
Professor Magleby is the kindest professor I've had so far! She is very understanding of what students need for hw and exams, and she provides exactly what is needed for both of them. She gives a ton of homework help in each lecture, and the exact solutions for corrections. Exams are great, they are only what is on the hw, with conceptual questions
This class and the professor are the worst I've had at BYU and we don't get a choice. No one else teaches this course. Going to class made me more confused and it was a subject I didn't understand. I often felt overwhelmed. She is confusing and can not teach.
Sister Magleby is very kind and really wants to help her students to understand. Her lectures can be confusing at times, but I honestly learned tons this semester. A lot was from working in a group. She gives homework helps that help sometimes. If you want to really learn the material, go to the TA lab.
Nice lady, but very disorganized. There was 10-15 hours of work outside class per week, most of which I did in the TA lab. TA's were very helpful. Tests weren't terrible, and going to the review sessions helped a lot. Lecture slides are never posted, although the lectures never seemed to cover the homework. Enjoyed the course, not the professor.
Magleby is great! Her tests are normally just multiple choice and she gives you everything you need for them. I did need help from the TAs a little more than usual on the homework, but then I was ready when the test came around. You don't want to miss lectures, though, because you'll fall behind. She's really nice and enjoys teaching. I love her!
Homework is super hard, tests are very easy. TA lab is your best friend. Textbook was not very helpful. Dr. Magleby was a decent professor; personally had a hard time understanding her style, but other students have said the opposite, so it's probably just me. If you've had some physics/engineering, it's not too hard of a class.
She is very unethical. She would allow some students to rework exams to get higher grades but not others. She also tells you she will drop quizzes but doesnt. She is also very difficult to learn from.
People either like her or hate her. I thing her excitement makes class fun. She shows videos and other real life application which helps digest concepts. She emphasizes main points several times in class so things stick by the time you do homework. Homework was tough because there was so much to learn and so many reading quizzes.
The class itself is not so hard. The thing is that she is so hard to communicate with and careless of the class. She is recycling all the recorded lectures from last term, and there is basically nothing she does to teach this class. She seems to be bothered to answer any kinds of emails from students. The worst professor I've ever had.
Professor Magleby is a nice person and she cares about her students. However, she is incredibly hard to work with. She indicated to me that she would not allow me to use certain accommodations that I had. I recommend finding another professor if you need accommodations. Her lectures were also not very effective. Often they felt disorganized.
She makes you grade your own hw. Eww. Decent lectures, but I think she's been teaching this class for too long. Decent enough class, but does have a decent amount of work involved.
I don't know why there are poor ratings, probably because this is an intro-level class & freshmen are just salty cause it's their first time they actually had to work for a grade. She is an amazing teacher, clear, organized, and really works for your success. Hard concepts, but you have everything needed to get a good grade if you actually try
No clue why people hate her, probably because they're lazy and you actually have to do the homework to solidify material. The hw is pretty accurate of how the tests are, and she is very good at making sure you have the resources to do well. Super understanding to the difficulties of online learning. It's really not that hard and she is awesome
Stephanie is a great teacher, but beware of her tests. They can be confusing at times but the content is not hard to understand. I would 100 percent recommend. The home works do count a lot, so beware. Also, there is a bridge project that she never really teaches you how to do it, but with few youtube videos, you should be able to get by.
One of my favorite teachers! Tests are pretty easy as long as you can do the homework & understand it. You grade your own homework which is nice because it is worth a lot of your grade. She is very flexible and even canceled large assignments because of covid and online learning challenges. Ignore the bad reviews, she rocks and the class isn't hard
Overall she wasn't a bad teacher. She is very kind and caring, and was always ready to answer questions or help with a concern. Sometimes her teaching wasn't the most clear or concise, but she does well enough that you can understand the material and do ok. Your grade mostly comes from the hw and the tests.
Very hard to communicate with. I emailed her multiple times, and she never got back to me. When I finally got her on a zoom call, she seemed annoyed with being asked questions. You won't know what your grade is until she's submitted them and it's hard to see what went into your grade bc she drops certain things (or doesnt) and doesn't make it clear
Professor Magleby assigns a ridiculous amount of reading and homework, far more than I've had in any engineering class. Her lectures were difficult for me to follow. The amount of time that she expects students to spend working and reading and watching her videos is extremely overkill.
Her lectures were very long, each one was an information overload. Her tests were mostly conceptual based, lot's of Gotcha questions. To her benefit everything on the test is something she has said, or given in a PowerPoint, the problem is that there's just so much info. Also her syllabus was not accurate, and did not contain a clear grade cutoff.
Professor Magleby gives hints for the homework every class period in order for students to get started and gives a lot of hints as to what will be on the tests. Tests are conceptual and mostly multiple choice. Homework isn't terrible, but there are some problems/units that will trip you up. Other students had more issues with her than I did.
Prof. Magleby is the best. Her lectures are clear and fun, the HW load and tests are reasonable, and she gives you ample resources for studying. She also gives hints for all HW assignments at the end of lecture.
I loved Professor Magleby; her lectures were effective and enjoyable, and she is very understanding of the hardships that come with school and this class specifically. One annoying thing is she doesn't use the online grade book, so it's hard to really know how you're doing in the class until you get your final grade.
I enjoyed Prof. Magleby for Statics. In Dynamics she was really bad. So much confusion and she did not seem to be very comfortable in the matter. If you can get another professor, sign with them. Otherwise, get ready to google and memorize without understanding
You probably don't have a choice about taking from her, but be warned. She's super unorganized and I honestly didn't know my grade until it was posted. She's really hard to reach, and sometimes just won't answer emails. She was frequently late to class, and once just didn't show. She also wasted a ton of class time on stuff that wasn't related.
The lectures for this class are often a bit off-topic, and most of the learning is done by doing the homework. She tries to make the homework assignments a bit easier by giving hints, but because there is a homework assignment due for every lecture it is burdensome. She gives plenty of review material for her tests.
How to Pass: Step 1 - Go to Class. Step 2 - take pictures of homework help. Step 3 - Go to TA hours when you work on homework. Step 4 - Rinse and Repeat. Her exams aren't the worst, but they are graded heavily. Her homework help is only provided IN CLASS. So take a good photo while you're there and try to sit in the front for good photos.
Stephanie Magleby is one of the most kind, competent teachers in the ME program. She cares a lot about getting her information across to her students, and understands her material well. I absolutely loved her class, and any time I didn't understand something, I'd ask her about it and she'd explain it. The TA's are all true homies as well.
Dr. Magleby is very sweet and cares a lot about her students. Not sure why all the negative reviews because she makes dynamics so so easy. Lectures are a bit disorganized but she is very clear about what material is on the tests and gives many answers beforehand as well as lots of tips and help on homework. Very down to earth too.
I had Magleby for Statics and, at the time, I really disliked her teaching. Now that I am currently taking CCE 203, I really miss her lectures. Statics wasn't too difficult, but there is a fair amount of homework. The worst part of the class, in my opinion, was how we graded our own assignments and I didn't know my grade till my official transcript
So heres the thing. I do not really have a problem with Magleby. But her test grading time is so slow. I am sitting here last day of finals week and my midterms 2, 3 and final aren't graded yet. I get the final... but midterm 2? I have no idea what grade I need in the class because the assignments aren't created in learning suite. Confusing.
Professor Magleby is good at explaining difficult concepts in an understandable way.
Everything in this class depends on how well you do on the test. The 4 tests make up 70% of your grade. I could not stand her lectures as she would be all over the place and never quite explained the actual concept. The TAs taught me everything for this class through the homework and even then, I feel like I still have no conceptual understanding.
Professor Magleby taught well, I think her homework system is really good at helping us learn. You do have to keep close track of the assignments though. TAs are vital, they got me through this class. I think her low rating is undeserved, everyone I've talked to also thinks she's great!
Professor Magleby taught the class well. There was a lot of homework, but there were many TA's that were able to help me along the way. There are 3 exams in total, 3 bridge projects, and homework basically every day. As long as you go to class and talk to TAs and classmates, you should be fine.
She has a difficult time explaining challenging concepts in class. Her slides and lectures are very disorganized. The only reason to go to lecture was to get homework help. She also did not even make the test for her class and claimed to not know what we would be tested on. Getting a hold of her is very difficult and you don't know your grade ever.
The material is very hard, but she teaches very well. She does a quick walk through for the homework at the end of each class, and it makes a world of a difference. She also has us do a final project, but it takes like no time at all. VERY HARD, VERY WORTH IT
You have homework due Monday, Wednesday, Friday, but its usually only a few problems each time, and at the end of each class she gives some tips to help you with it. Tests were really difficult, but the class was a good, and lectures were focused on solving dynamics problems.
Professor Magleby teaches difficult concepts very simply. If you come to class and pay attention during lecture then you will understand and if you didn't quite grasp the concepts then you have access to TA's who are super helpful. If somebody does bad in her class it is because they don't show up to lecture or use the other resources given.
I took CCE 103 Fall 2023. I came back to write a review because I miss professor Magleby so much! She has a gift of teaching and making learning accessible. She made me believe I was capable of doing engineering. I miss her teaching style. Her expectations were clear and she always gave exam help. The TA's are so helpful. She wants you to succeed!
Professor Magleby is by far one of the best on campus. Her lectures are clear, concise, and actually help with exams and homework. Expect 4-6 hours of homework a week, doing the hw is the best way to prepare for the exams. The TA's for this class are key to getting the hw done efficiently. Don't waste time trying to figure it out on your own.
Magleby really cares about her student's success and gave all the tools we needed to succeed. Lectures were great at establishing the foundation, HW cemented it. 5ish hours of HW per week, but Magleby gives a lot of in-class help and the TA lab is regularly staffed. Take advantage of the TAs!! Tests are a breeze if you can do the HW by yourself.
Magleby cares about her students as she makes sure to learn everyone's names. She is really clear about what is on the tests and gives help with the homework. Her lectures are a repeated every year and have a ton of fluff, which can be a bit annoying. There is built in wiggle room for assignments, but she probably won't make exceptions as a result.
Professor Magleby is great at explaining tough concepts. Her homework system helps a lot, though you need to stay on top of assignments. The TAs are vital too. For study prep, unstuck study and other tools like ChatGPT were super helpful.
Great teacher!! I took statics from her and I absolutely loved it!! She explains the material very, very clearly and is understanding. You'll need to work to get the homework done, but it will help you gain a fantastic understanding of the material.
Professor Magleby's lectures were a little confusing since she would only teach through examples without fully explaining the concept first. The homework system is also set up to tank your grade if you miss the report portion of an assignment. Tests were supposed to be multiple choice but they switched to fill in partway through the semester.
The class is tough, I'm a lot slower and I spent around 5 hours a week doing the homework. I got a 50% in physics 105 so i was worried about this class, i got a 97% in this was a fraction of the work. People make this class seem way harder than it is. Work hard in the beginning 3-4 weeks and the rest is down hill. She is a great teacher.
Professor Magleby had very clear expectations, but she really wants her students to succeed. The material is tough, but the TAs are always available and great. She gives lots of answers to the homeworks & how to work through them on slides at the end of class, so make sure to attend & take pictures - slides aren't posted anywhere. Loved her class!
She teaches the concepts then basically runs through the homework with us in class. She is particular about the way you do things, like formatting and such, so you have to be meticulous with that. The homework can take 2-3 at a time if you get stuck, but the TA lab is usually pretty helpful.
I got nothing from class that I couldn't have gotten from the textbook. Class was such a waste of time that I stopped going. The online materials were not kept up to date. Good luck knowing what your grade is ever. Lectures focus only on equations and example problems. You won't gain a conceptual understanding of dynamics from class.
Prof Magleby is very fair and wants you to succeed. Statics is not an easy class, but it is manageable as long as you go to lectures and hit up the TA lab for sure (do NOT waste time trying to do the HW on your own). She is VERY particular about formatting, and it's a learning curve, but not bad. The tests are beasts, but overall, not the craziest.
This is one of my favorite classes because of Professor Magleby! She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She gives homework help in lectures and makes it possible to get a good grade with a lot of effort. The TA lab is a blessing and definitely worth going to. I thought I wasn't cut out for physics until I took this class.
The worst prof I've had at BYU. Took 30% off a midterm I got 100% right. Denied me of my accommodations/made me feel like a problem for even having them?? Never replied to emails. Lectures taught me nothing. Still no final grade weeks after semester ended. AVOID MAGLEBY AT ALL COSTS. Take this class elsewhere to keep your sanity :)
good professor, but i wish there was more depth to the lectures when it came to explaining how to do the problems. i spent hours in the TA lab every week. definitely go to the TA lab even if you aren't struggling, they give great advice and simplify concepts very well.
She is a good person. She is a terrible lecture giver. Not really worth attending. Her tests are terrible. I wouldn't even say they are difficult, but a lot of her questions are poorly written and some are not totally correct (she admitted to this when I was in her office hours). She also was not helpful in office hours.
She is a great caring person, but people get blinded by that. She is a elementary ed major with a masters in theoretical physics and it shows with her tests and lectures. She doesn't actually explain anything with her lectures, so any actual learning is by yourself or with a TA. Tests have weird conceptual questions that are out of nowhere
Professor Magleby liked to do homework with us in class which was nice. I was able to do all the work for statics but she had some random, trick-like conceptual questions on the tests that I missed which reflected in my final grade. I hardly used the TAs, so if you want an A I'd suggest going to the TA lab
Magleby is so nice and really cares about teaching! However, lectures tended to be disorganized and I often left lecture feeling confused. Luckily the TA lab was awesome and the TAs were fantastic. Magleby does give a ton of useful homework help though and even sometimes told us what a couple questions on the exams were going to be / be on.
