Stephanie is an awesome teacher. She really cares about her students and makes Spanish a fun class. I dreaded higher level Span but Stephanie made me want to go to every class. She's a hilarious goofy lady and extremely nice. You put in the work you can get an A. Some public speaking but you will do fine. Plus, she's a hottie so its win-win.
Stephanie Marquez is the best teacher I've ever had. Ever. I hated Spanish til she made it understandable & fun. I am a graduate student, so have had lots of profs...but she's the best. Ssshhhh...dont tell my other teachers! :) so good, I have now taken some of her other courses!
Stephanie is the best professor I have ever had, especially for Spanish! She really knows what she is talking about and tries to simplify things as much as possible so they are understandable. She cares about her students and will help with anything you ask!
Stephanie is an amazing professor, the best out of all that I had in college! She has a sincere passion for teaching, and for helping her students understand the material. There are plenty of laughs to be had in class as well. The world would be a better place if all professors were like her. Take every class from her that is possible!
Stephanie is amazing. She earnestly wants to see each and every one of her students succeed. I've never had a teacher so willing to go out of their way to make sure that every student gets the proper attention and help that they need. Take any class she teaches!
One of the best professors I have had. Very engaging, passionate about her subject, and fun.
Overall a great professor. Very personable-- she gives you her cell phone and other ways of contacting her. Her explanations are very clear and her tests are very easy. Just show up for class, study for a few hours before the test, making sure you know all the constructions, vocab, etc., and you should get an A.
I LOVE this professor. She's absolutely wonderful. Her class was so much fun and I can honestly say that I learned a lot. It's easy to get an A if you put in the work and effort, and she is so eager to help.
This teacher is amazing. There really needs to be more like her. She is willing to help anytime for anything. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Attendance is crucial in her classes.
The is the best Spanish professor hands down! She makes everything so easy to understand and is willing to help you 24/7! If you do your work you will get an A! No homework!
I am horrible at Spanish and have struggled all the way to her class. She is hands down the best professor I have had so far at UMKC. She makes it very easy to understand, she is hilarious, and she deeply cares about her students.
Stephanie is a great instructor! My advisor made me take Sp21 otherwise my advising hold wouldn't get removed. I am glad Stephanie ended up being my prof because she is an amazing instructor! She really breaks down grammar and answers questions. I've had other Spanish profs that didn't care about their students and laughed at questions at umkc!
Ok so the semester isn't even over yet but I wanted to comment before the end. I'm a pretty lazy student honestly, but this instructor is one that I will remember forever. I wish all instructors were like her. I might not have been so lazy in school if all my instructors inspired the class the way she does. Thanks, Ms. Marquez.
Stephanie is by far the best Spanish teacher I have ever had. She is very fun and down to earth and makes the class very easy if you actually go to class. Her lectures are clear and she is always patient when answering students' questions.
Stephanie is cool and funny- probably not a better teacher for SPAN 211.
Never in my life have I seen a greater interest in the success of an instructors students, and my parents are both teachers! I didn't know what I was signing up for when I first picked her class, but I must say that she is thorough, she is approachable, and if you show an interest in succeeding she will move heaven and earth to make it possible
Loved her so much. She is great. :)
Probably the all-around best professor at UMKC. INSANELY dedicated and passionate and caring about her students and her subject. Incredibly inspirational personal. Very lively and very funny. Her way of teaching spanish makes it easier to understand than any other teacher I've had, she breaks down every part of the grammar.
I loved her as a professor and I wish I could have her for all of my spanish classes. I learned so much in the short amount of time that I had with her. If you really want to improve your spanish, you should take her class. However, you will have to put some work into it.
She is the best Spanish teacher at the University. I learned a lot in her grammar class and was hoping she taught higher level Spanish classes. She will make you work, but you will learn a lot. The work is busy work, but it is beneficial for learning the language. Do not expect an easy class.
Her class was a lot of fun. She definitely takes her time teaching the content which is helpful for a lot of people. Overall she's an excellent teacher as well as person. The work is easy as long as you don't miss class and actually participate.
Ya'll. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! She is the highest rated professor at UMKC on this site for a reason. If you go to class, you'll get an A. She always gives you a ton of hints on quizzes. She explains the material well and is incredibly caring. She shares her personal story and is more than willing to help you with whatever you need. I love Stephanie!!!
The best Spanish professor at UMKC. I received a B but it was only because it was a 5 week class. She gives you the most information about quizzes and tests to help you prepare.
Prof. Marquez is simply the best. Not only is she an excellent teacher who breaks it down in an easy-to-follow way, but she is also a great person. She is understanding of personal struggles outside of class and does her best to help. She helped me through a very hard semester, and that's not something a lot of professors would do. Take her class!
I just graduated this summer & had her as a prof a few semesters ago. Didn't feel right saying "adios" to umkc without giving her the credit she deserves. I'm a native spanish speaker, & this class was difficult even for me. But because of her, my language got perfected, & I can now officially call myself bilingual. I owe so much to her!
Stephanie is seriously one of the best professors at UMKC. You have to take her for this course!
This is hands down the BEST teacher here at UMKC. I specifically requested this teacher based off of the reviews she had on this website. Stephanie wants to be here and understands not everyone is in her class because we love Spanish so much, but rather it is a degree requirement. She likes to take things slow in class and really explains well!
Absolutely the best spanish teacher at UMKC.
somehow both no nonsense and full of nonsense, she grades fairly but doesnt accept much late work
She is amazing! She is a really fun teacher , hella funny too . Honestly, pretty easy going . One of the best professors I've had so far . everything that is talked about in class is pretty much far game for the midterm and final . DO YOUR GRAMMAR HOMEWORK , ITS EASY POINTS .
Dr. Marquez is by far one of the best professors I have ever had! It is very obvious that she is passionate about what she does. Also, it's clear that she cares about her students. She goes the extra mile to make sure that everyone understands everything and she is very willing to answer all questions. She is awesome!!
She is the best I've ever had. Never thought I'd like going to a class I usually hate so much. I can't say enough great things about her as a prof and as a person. But y'all get ready to work. This is not an easy class to pass. I hear some of the other Span 211 profs grade A LOT easier than she does. Still recommend her though just cuz she's cool.
An absolutely incredible teacher and person. Stephanie is very clear about the requirements and helps you as much as you need (provided you ask her). She is hilarious and really helps you understand Spanish.
Stephanie is by far the best Spanish teacher I've ever had. She is hilarious yet makes sure to get everything done. Stephanie is very laid back and fun in classes that get things done when asked, so make sure to do your work. There are five presentations but they are super fun and easy so don't let those scare you away!
Stephanie Márquez is probably the best professor whom I've ever had at UMKC. She's kind, caring, and very funny. She understands that students have lives outside of the classroom and is willing to help anyone in need. She may come off as a bit intimidating, but that is only because she cares and wants to help her students master Spanish.
Stephanie is the best professor I've ever had. Her lectures are clear and she really cares about her students. I did not enjoy learning Spanish until I took a class with her. An absolute wonderful person.
This prof is so much fun and keeps it real and cares and knows what she teaches but definitely expects a lot from her students. It's not easy if you don't stay on top of the syllabus cuz you miss major things. I barely passed but that's not on her. Just do what she tells you to do and read her stuff and don't miss class ever.
My Spanish is so much better after her class and she's a really good person as well. You've got to work hard. She does not like excuses. She's the most dedicated prof I've ever had and expects you to be. Pay attention to what she says and read every single thing in Canvas and emails and you'll always know exactly what's coming. She's very clear.
Depends on what you want out of Spanish class. BEST teacher ever & explains so you can understand (thanks), but also the HARDEST grader. Her grading is NOT unfair, it's just harder than ANY Spanish teacher has ever graded before, if they even graded anything which is doubtful now that I think about it. She's great but not an easy A or even B.
This class, no matter who you take it with, is not an easy A; however, she does everything she can to prepare you for the quizzes and especially the cumulative final exam. She makes the final exam, so more than half of it is repeat questions from past quizzes. With any other teacher, you will have different quizzes so the final will be impossible.
Stephanie is the most personable prof I've had at UMKC. She is an open book and has students text her questions. The long emails give great description of assignments. Always had clear expectations and gave good feedback. This class was interesting and I learned a lot. Take this class, be respectful, and try your best! Wish I had her for 325+!
Profesora Marquez is amazing! I've had her twice and absolutely adore her. She is by far the best teacher I have ever had. She is a hardish teacher but that is because she expects so highly of her students. She is very prompt on everything but makes everything fun and exciting. She's super able of communication and always willing to help students.
Marquez is an amazing instructor. She tells you how it is from Day 1, so you know what to expect. She doesn't play. She's caring and forms bonds with her former students. Her class can either make or break you and that depends on whether you take ALL the advice she gives you. She truly cares about her students so don't take advantage of that.
Profesora Marquez is incredible. She's hilarious and very straightforward. I was nervous at the beginning of the class, but very quickly became comfortable due to her personality and the way she laid the course out. She cares very deeply about her students and is passionate about what she teaches. Use all of the materials she offers, it helps!!!!
Class was on online due to covid and while her instructions were very thorough, they were also overwhelming (She sent a 4,600 word email right before the semester started). She grades things low at the beginning of semester then gradually gives higher grades to show improvement. She gives WAY more than 3 hours of work per week but you learn a lot.
I'm in the class currently & just read what 1 of my classmates obviously wrote. I'm shook. Marquez is amazing. She's not brief in her explanations, but she does it for our benefit. I'd much prefer her who cares than a prof that doesn't, that's what all my other profs are like this semester. Marquez is the best & grades more than fair!
There isn't enough characters in this box to say everything. Yes, the class can be overwhelming at first, but the level of care and dedication to teaching is off the charts. I hate Spanish. Yet I felt like I finally understood what was going here. This is Spanish 3. If you have to take a Spanish, find this teacher and take it. She deserves a medal.
I'm a native speaker. I recommend this class to everyone like me. Not gonna lie, it's a lot of work, but worth it! There's always something important to do but it's not busy work, you learn a lot! Do it, on time! She puts her students as her #1 priority, so no excuses! Don't take advantage of her generosity. The class I learned the most in by far!
Somehow she made an online class not feel like an online class. I hated Spanish, but I love her style and now thinking about majoring. This chick is inspiring, life-changing. She's real with you, so you be real with her. Never done this before, but I actually wrote an email to her Dean/Department to say how great she was. She deserves some credit.
Amazing!!! This prof gives you everything you need to be successful-so if you're not, it's on you for being lazy like me. I didn't read everything on Canvas til I missed major assignments-& I was kicking myself cuz everything you need is there-instructions, details, day-by-day, all that! Read it all ASAP! She sends you a message, read it ASAP too!
Speechless bout this prof! She's simply the BEST you could EVER imagine in every way! There's lots of work, but you learn LOTS from everything! VERY fair grader! If you don't do well on the first round of things, read her instructions and take her feedback to heart. Best feedback, best online class, best professor, best person I've met. So true!
If you're at the level looking for a class that will really improve your Spanish, take this one with this prof. It's a lot of work, but you get out way more than you put in. You'll see that at the end of the semester when you look back at how much you've improved. I'm majoring instead of minoring in Spanish because of this class & this prof.
Best online class you could ever imagine! She was flexible, understanding on as much as she could be if an emergency came up, but there are strict deadlines on everything, on the other hand she gives you plenty of time to get everything done. Stay on track with the syllabus and read everything she has or sends you. Great person and great professor
This professor is the most organized person, which makes for an amazing online synchronous class. Not one second is wasted. There's a lot of info on the Canvas site, but you need it all, so don't get overwhelmed. SO ORGANIZED! I'm sad that I didn't get the chance to meet Stephanie in person cuz she's so dedicated and exudes SUCH a good vibes!
She is EXTRA, no exaggeration. She sends emails that are super long and you must read them all and she is super specific with each assignment you get (which is a lot). Get ready to dedicate a lot of time to this class and get ready to do presentations in ONLY Spanish. It can be fun at times but be ready to do a lot. She can be quite rude.
I can't say enough nice things about Professor Márquez. She genuinely cares about her students and will jump through hoops to make sure they succeed, despite the unnecessarily strict foreign language program parameters. She understands the college struggle, and she truly works for her students. She is one of the best professors I've had at UMKC.
Taken this class 2 other times with other instructors. Didn't pass and didn't learn anything. Put in the same effort this semester. Getting a B. What she has us do and how she teaches is so effective, that's what made me learn so much and get a good grade. If you want the best, take her (and I've got others to compare her to). She's bomb, so good!
Maybe it was because I took her online, but I really struggled with her teaching style. As others said she sends incredibly long emails that need to be read thoroughly to get the gist of, and she assigns things with many small details you need to pay attention to. The course was incredibly stressful and I couldn't keep up.
I'm in her summer class. It's intense but she's the most understanding, caring person I've ever met. There are strict deadlines, late work is not accepted, but she explains everything so well & gives reminders. I've been going through a hard time, & I feel like she actually cares. This professor goes above & beyond for her students in so many ways.
Simply the best. Better than all the rest. Better than anyone. Anyone I ever met. (That's a song, y'all, and I'd like to dedicate it to Stephanie Marquez). Love ya, Tina Turner lol. (All kidding aside, Stephanie is no doubt the absolute best!
I picked Stephanie because of all the amazing reviews, but I actually really regret it. She isn't teaching in person or even over zoom, it's recorded lectures with video checks, and most assignments aren't listed on canvas. When you do meet in zoom, she is condescending if you don't know something, and honestly pretty rude. I loved my other profs.
Its time to look for a new round of profs for this semester, and I wish I could take her again. Nobody else measures up. I've had 3 Spanish profs before her and 3 profs after, nobody is as good as her, not even close. Take this prof every chance you get. It'll change your Spanish and change your life. You'll see.
The grammar videos she makes explain things better than ANY prof I've ever had. She goes slow and repeats if you need it, BUT you can speed it up when you don't. And in Zoom sessions, she lets EVERY single person get ALL their questions answered, which most profs don't. She does a REALLY good job of not making it a stressful class to go to. GRACIAS
Anyone who needs a Spanish class, take this professor. I think she works 7 days a week because she's always active on our class site, sending us quick messages, updating things, and I've contacted her several times with questions, and she's always gotten back to me immediately. She's definitely dedicated to her students and her job, the best!
Best Spanish experience I've had and one of the best experiences in any class. Marquez knows how to use technology so there's no glitches like with other teachers, so no wasted time in her class. She's nice, and knows how to teach for advanced or for students who struggle like me. Read all the details she gives you, and you'll be OK.
One of the most convoluted, frustrating classes I've ever taken. Some assignments are listed on Canvas, some are hidden in the syllabus. Some are on Canvas, but don't have due dates. This is on top of the torrent of MySpanishLab assignments due every other day. This class ruined my GPA, and it has nothing to do with my major or interests. Thx UMKC
This is genuinely the most confusing class I've ever taken. She's put so much stuff on her canvas site that I am genuinely looking for assignments. It didn't help that her teaching style completely does not mesh with me and probably others as well. Watching videos for an online class is something I actively avoid. Everything was due at class time.
Had to drop her after the first day of class, all the prior negative reviews sum up my reasons. Caution with this prof!!!
She's really great. My brother and I took her class together. We both thought it was great. I got a B+ and he got an A-. She is attentive, caring and explains well. If you watch her grammar videos, it's the best explanation you'll ever get, and they're funny too.
Spanish 120 summer class, 8 weeks. I dread summer classes but how she has it set up is manageable. She's very nice. I've had a lot of questions, and she's replied the same day w helpful answers. She even helped me to get a discount on the course materials. I'm struggling w money. Got a D in my last Spanish class but I have an A with her so far.
Oral Interviews with her were actually fun & relaxed. Grades easy & gives ways to improve. Also let me turn things in late without taking off when I had an emergency. She's super caring. Spanish 120 was really good with this prof because she made it good even though it was a lot in a little time since it was a summer class. Take her every class!
Profesora Marquez was by far the best Spanish teacher I have ever been taught by. The amount of vocabulary and grammar that I not only learned but have also retained is all thanks to her teaching style. She gives out many extra credit opportunities and always gives handwritten feedback on ALL assignments. Amazing professor!
If u can take this prof, do it. She cares & is there when you need her. U learn a lot too. I was worried about taking a 300 level class but it wasn't bad at all bc it's not like literature or anything too heavy. If you review the grammar, you'll get a good grade on the tests. There's things to turn in every week, so do it when you have a flex day.
Tough grader does have sympathy for one who is learning Spanish or someone who knows how to speak it but does not know how to write it.
Worst professor I have had in all my Spanish courses do not take, does not give you time to focus on other classes. I gave her a review not long ago must got erased probably didn't like the bad review I gave. Don't take class unless you only are taking one class because she lectures as if she was the only class one has to take. Super tough grader
This professor is the worst of the three I've had. There are so many assignments with tiny little details and if you mess up a little, it tanks your grade. Questions asked during video checks rarely have anything do to with Spanish. Too many projects, too many tests/quizzes, and grading seems to be all over the place. Would not take again.
I would take her for all the classes if I could. She really does care about her students and gives good feedback to help you do better next time. You learn a lot from the canvas assignments instead of it just being busy work. I would highly recommend her if you need to take this class.
Just finished this class and I was surprised by the good grade I got bc I didn't have to put in that much effort, just time. She's really nice and understanding, and explains grammar really well in the videos she makes. If you take her, you'll glad.
Based on the 1st spanish class I took here (twice just to pass), she makes it more fun (not as many pointless assignments as other profs). She was lenient with me too. Really good experience compared to my 1st spanish class. I will be taking her next semester too. She really helped me a lot when I was struggling at first.
Best Spanish class. Gives you real advice about how to make your Spanish better, not textbook stuff. I thought mine was pretty good, but in this class, I realized why it wasn't, and understood how. I owe Profesora a huge thank you for helping me to finally get better. I think she's a good person and pretty funny.
Cares about her students. Will help with anything. Responds super quick. Very communicative so you get to know her even in an online class. Nice. (Idk why some people said not everything was on Canvas. It is! The learning platform is online instead of a textbook, so follow the assignment calendar there a few times a week. Easy.)
The grade I got was my fault as I am personally not good at learning new languages, but this was a great experience and it's a very straightforward class that is easy to do well in if you're completing all tasks. I would highly recommend any student who has the opportunity to take a class with Prof. Marquez to enroll.
I signed up for an in-person class but Marquez switch the class to online / asynchronous after it was too late to drop. She spent so many lectures just monologuing in English there was never any grammar lectures or anything...I hated her class because I wanted help with pronunciation and instead just got working out of textbook all semester.
LOVE LOVE MARQUEZ! Amazing professor who really cares about her students. She gives great feedback on assignments and is accessible through email. Lots of assignments and writing that feel like busy work, but repetition is key for languages. Loves what she does, wants you to be in class for points. Hilarious during her lectures; my fave this term
Most stressful, awful class I've taken. She is a very caring person, however does way too much..
She made the class flexible so things due at the end of each topic. If you plan ahead, it's not that much; if you wait, it will be. If you watch her grammar review lectures, they're the best/you'll learn a lot; if you don't, you'll struggle on test. She's a really lenient grader as long as you follow the instructions. Loved it. She's funny too.
Take her classes! First instructor that ever made real grammar videos for us instead of just the tutorials from the publisher. She explains things in a very clear way. Her messages are long, but she always lets you know what's coming up. Gives a lot of feedback to help you on the next assignments. You can tell she really cares.
She really cares about you even if you don't really care about learning Spanish. She's a real person w her students, & you can be real w her too. Just be respectful bc rudeness is not OK w her. I used "AI" once on a project, & she figured it out SMH! When I turned in my own mediocre work at best, she gave me a better grade than I deserved TBH. :)
The professor is very nice and funny but she makes her instructions extremely long therefore doing assignment will take a while just figuring out what you have to do. She does it to clarify but if you have adhd or characteristics you will not be lost for a while. Its an easy class but it definitely takes a huge chunk of your time.
