I didn't take AP Chem in high school and I was still fine in this class. Her tests are almost exactly like the mock exams she posts- do them! You get free points just for showing up and clicking in and the homework is just a completion grade (plus it's helpful). I didn't even buy the textbook. She's really funny and helpful during office hours!
I honestly don't know why her rating is so low. She is funny and personable and really knows her stuff. iClickers used for attendance, ALEKS used for homework. Very accessible and helpful outside class hours. Background in Chem always helps, but she definitely does a great job.
I don't understand why McCartney isn't rated higher. She's a good professor; her lectures are straight forward, it's easy to ask questions, and she's weird -but it makes class interesting. She does give a good amount of homework, but so does every Chem 101 teacher. Don't buy the textbook, she covers everything. I'm taking her again for Chem 102.
Dr. McCartney made me really love chemistry & enjoy this class! She has a fun personality & has good ways to learn certain subjects.. go to every class to get clicker points. There was a lot of homework, but not an overload.. I attended most SI sessions & did every mock exam, if you put in the effort & practice the material it shouldn't be hard.
Chemistry was a really tough class for me, but Dr. McCartney was super helpful along the way. She makes the lectures funny and interesting (as much as chemistry can be interesting). I had no background knowledge in chem and expected to die in this class, but she helped it become bearable. She relies on ALEKS A LOT.
She had received poor reviews, so I was concerned when I had selected her, but I had no regrets because there was nothing bad about her class. Only homework assignments come from ALEKS and she posts mock exams and week before the exam date, and the mock is very similar and covers th same topics as the exam, so it is helpful. Manageable A
Doc Mac is not a bad professor. Sure, you have to do a lot of homework and come to class, but it's chemistry. She tries really hard to make sure everyone passes ample office hour times, large grade percentage based off of ALEKS and participation, and she slightly curves the exams. There are 5 exams so the average of them helps you in the long run
She teaches with the mindset that everyone enters with AP/IB Chem background. I did not, so I felt lost a good majority of the lectures. She is an okay professor but I am switching profs for chem 102. *there's a reason why her classes are the last to fill up* She has practice problems but only during class, they are not included in the slides.
Professor McCartney is a good professor who cares about her students. It is harder to understand your lectures if you don't have a recent background in chemistry, but she is very available for help. She tries to make the lectures interesting and the homework helps buffer your grade. Textbook reading isn't mandatory but practice problems help a lot.
Dr. Mac is a great person, but she moves really fast & doesn't really go into detail on why she's doing what she's doing. if you took AP Chem in high school you should be fine, but beware - exams have a HUGE impact on your grade. summer Chem module didn't help at all. I never had to use my textbook. Dr. Mac uses ALEKS software for hw & its a PAIN.
I heard many bad things about McCartney before taking her class but it was not as bad as everyone said. Her tests are very hard compared to other professor's and she does not curve throughout the semester, maybe at the end. She does a great job in teaching the material but if you do not have Chem background the tests may be very challenging.
McCartney was an okay professor. Not the best but she got the job done and did a pretty good job of explaining most topics. Her practice exams were usually like her actual ones and they let you know what concepts you needed to study and what type of questions she planned on asking. Her final was tough and kind of concept-heavy but doable.
Dr. McCartney was one of my best professors my first semester. She is very sweet, and charismatic. Tries to engage the class and does not make lectures as boring as they could be. She posts practice exams that and look similar to the test. The overall course grade consisted of clicker points, and 4 exams not counting the final. Homework is doable.
McCartney is a solid choice for Chem101. I took AP chem in hs so this class was easier for me than others, but her tets are just like the practice questions she goes over in class and the mock exams she puts up. Hardest and most annoying part of class is the ALEKS hmk which was irrelevant to her tests and took ridiculous amt of time to do.
Dr. McCartney moved very quickly through lectures and doesnt go into detail with math problems. Her mock exams were like the exams and her final was a lot more difficult and concept based. She used ALEKS for homework, but I didn't like it because it was time-consuming on things you didn't really need. Go to office hours and SI sessions. I didnt lol
Dr. McCartney isn't a bad prof but it is not an easy A. I had difficulty with her class because I was transitioning into my first semester of college and I had her at 8am MWF. Make sure you show up to all lectures for those iclicker points because they help your grade a ton. You are gonna have to use the SI sessions or outside resources.
I loved Dr. McCartney! I didn't even buy the book, you don't really need it. You have to study! Her exams can be tough but they're fair and if you study you'll do fine. She does clicker questions everyday as attendance so it's good to show up, she makes her lectures interesting. She has mock exams for every exam, which really help.
Dr. McCartney is a great professor. She does pretty well at explaining concepts to students and is available after class during office hours. The test are difficult but she provides practice exams that do help for the most part. I highly recommend going to SI review session before the exams. Overall, the class is difficult, but manageable.
Prof Mac is very sweet and helpful in person, but her class wasn't a walk in the park. She had iClicker questions everyday so come to class to get free points, and the hw we had could take hours on end on top of studying. Before each test she gave mock exams which were helpful, but come test day there was questions that didn't match the lecture.
She has a hard reputation but if you work in the class, she's great! She is very helpful outside of class and is very accommodating. She is excellent at teaching and provides lots of resources so you can succeed, absolutely recommend.
McCartney was the best prof I had all semester. Chem is a tough subject but if you go to class and pay attention you should be fine. McCartney does a great job of laying out her lectures logically and tells you everything you need in class. I rarely had to look at the book. Do the homework and go to class to get all the easy completion points!!
She doesn't explain the concepts very well and the test questions are nothing like what we went over in class. There's a ton of homework on the online ALEKS system, and she didn't always give us much time to work on it. I love chemistry but this was my least favorite class because of her.
Doc Mac is an awesome professor who is super organized both in her lectures and in grading criteria. She is very helpful through email and office hours. She is passionate about chemistry and she teaches it very well and gives very understandable examples. Attendance counts for 90/1000 points. Grade based on attendance, online hw, & tests.
I love the way she teaches! She made me enjoy chemistry and although it was sort of difficult to get an A, it's not impossible! I did study a lot for exams but I really recommend SI sessions because chemistry is a hard subject regardless.
Dr. McCartney is clear on her expectations, lectures clearly and concisely, and answers all questions inside and outside of class without making you feel discouraged. She clearly cares about your success in the course. Study hard, keep up with hw, and show up to class. A quarter of the overall grade are "freebie" points from iClicker question & hw.
Doc Mac is seriously not as bad as some people rate her. She is a very kind person and really has a great passion for chemistry. She goes over plenty of practice problems in class, she's great during office hours, and she gives you all of the resources that's necessary to pass the course. Her tests are a bit difficult, but do the mock tests prior.
Dr. McCartney isn't as bad as people make her out to be. Her tests are harder than most profs but she prepares really well for them. There is always a mock exam that is similar to the exam. The homework is an easy 100 and attending class is also a portion of your grade, which is nice. She is an awesome lecturer and makes everything understandable.
I had prof McCartney for both chem 101 and 102. I love her as a person, but the combination of ALEKS and super hard exams make me want to cry. If you study nonstop two weeks ahead of the exam, theres a chance youll pass. I would turn to other professors if you want an easy A, because she makes you work for it.
Study the ALEKS homework because the test questions are based off of them. Her lectures are helpful and she shows you how to do the problems during lecture. She takes attendance with the iclicker system so show up to every lecture. The way she scores the tests lets you miss 1 question and still get a 100, which means you could get extra points.
Didn't really use the textbook, ALEKS is annoying but makes for an easy 100 on homework and has mock exams that are very similar to tests. Good lectures that make sense.
Didn't really pay attention much in class except writing down her practice problems. Homework may be a lot but that and her clicker points make up a good portion of the entire grade. Went to A+ tutoring and ended with amazing grades on her tests.
McCartney is a really good professor! After a not so good first go at chem 101, I turned it around real quick in 102. McCartney has mock exams which are very similar to the tests and make studying way less stressful! Her tests are pretty straightforward and lectures aren't too boring! There are clickers every class though so be prepared to show up
IF I had to choose between stapling my balls to a wild pig or taking McCartney's class again, I would grab that hog before you could say ouch.
Dr. McCartney is very knowledgable on chemistry. Her lectures are very helpful and reflect her exams. The mock exams are a lot of help and so are the SI sessions. Do both and you can get a good grade on her exams. She's super helpful and caring. Makes lots of jokes and provides a lot of examples. Don't skip class if you want to pass. Very good prof
I was scared to take her, but she has been one of my favorites. I regret not taking her for 102. She is funny, smart, but hard. Honestly, all of chemistry is hard. She was always in her office, graded fast, and even though I didn't end up with an A, I still do not regret taking her. She prepared me for 102. Give her a try, she is not bad at all!
I really don't understand why McCartney's rating isn't higher. She's an amazing professor. Her tests aren't anything out of this world. She gets them from the homework problems, in class questions, or her mock exams. She's super nice in office hours and makes sure you understand the material. I'd give her a higher rating if I could.
I heard awful things about Dr. McCartney coming into Freshman year, but she definitely was not as bad as everyone made her sound. She was super excited to teach everyday and made gen chem as interesting as it can be. If you had chem in high school, 101 and 102 should not be hard if you take her.
Everything was more or less good overall, she provided a lot of examples. I think in the end for me she really screwed us over. She gave us a final that was really complicated and contained material that was not similar to her exams.
Overall McCartney is a good professor. You do have to come to class for notes (blank notes are posted online, not completed ones) and participation points. The tests are not terribly difficult and the questions are similar to her in class examples, mock exams, ALEKS hw, and the SI exam reviews. If you do what you need to, you'll get a good grade.
I took her for 101 and this did not compare. I went to the SI's and study sessions and her exams are so much more difficult than the homework or mock exams. I am not a chemistry person by nature, but my friend who is a chem major even had a hard time in her class. AVOID AT ALL COST. GRADES MATTER MORE THAN A FUNNY TEACHER!!! Final was a total JOKE!
I had not taken AP Chem and I got a 95 both semesters with Dr. McCartney. She is a great professor who gives clear lectures and is very helpful in office hours. Attend SI sessions and IA sessions (write these down at the beginning of the semester). You do NOT the textbook (seriously). Go to lecture and stay on top of ALEKS hw and you'll do great!
Dr. McCartney was one of my favorite profs. If you put forth the effort to go to office hours, she is SO helpful! She is a VERY fast grader and communicates clearly. She has very organized lectures with TONS of practice problems. If you go to SI's and look over the in-class clicker problems, you should be fine! ALEKS hw is the only downside.
I have never had as unpleasant of an experience at Texas A&M as I have with this class. The online homework is infuriatingly tedious, and the attendance is 13% of your grade. Honestly, I'm sure Dr. Mccarteny is at least trying her best, but lectures aren't very helpful. This class is far too much stress for how easy the material is.
Doc Mac was a great professor, and will be quick to help you... if you make her class a priority. She has no empathy towards students who put off her homework to the last day, no matter the reason. She will snap at you if you ask a question about something on the syllabus. But, she has fantastic lectures and is approachable.
I honestly don't understand why she has so many bad reviews because she's problem the easiest out of all the profs. I never read the textbook and just used my notes from lecture. Btw make sure to attend lecture because she gives a bunch of extra credit iClicker questions and gives more notes on the powerpoints rather than the ones posted online.
I absolutely love Dr. Mac. There is no reason you shouldn't get an A in this class. Her lectures are hilarious and she teaches you everything you need to know for exams. The mock exams are very representative of the real ones, and all exam points add up to a higher number than they are graded out of, therefore you can get extra credit.
I think she's fair
literally the best chem teacher ever. the people who poorly rate her are the people who dont show up to class (thats on you homie)
LOTS of exams, and they are hard, so make sure to study. Her lectures are interesting and generally enjoyable; she is funny and explains things in an easy to understand way. She uses ALEKS for homework, which I enjoyed, but it can be a bit of a pain.
Dr. McCartney was a fair professor. All of her tests were based off what she teaches in class. You'll probably never find something thats not covered on her exams. Her final was pretty easy as long as you reviewed the slides and previous tests/practice tests. Understand what you got wrong and strive to fix it. I started this semester off with a D.
Dr. McCartney explained things really well and I actually understood each concept. I bought the book, but I never used it, so don't waste your money. She uses ALEKS as a homework system which is awful, but can also be helpful at times. & GO TO SI SESSIONS!!! study the practice tests thoroughly and you'll be set.
Dr. Mac has slower lectures and lots of clicker questions that count for grade points - so come to class! If you are not strong in chemistry I would recommend her class as well as going to SI sessions if, you show you care about her class she helps you figure things out. Beware of homework, ALEKS is the program she uses and I hated it.
i was scared of chemistry because i knew it was going to be difficult but mccartney was amazing! she was funny, her lectures were clear and easy to follow, and while she gave homework twice a week it was completion through aleks which made understand the material a priority; i would definitely take her again and highly recommend her as a prof
I took AP Chem and this class was fairly easy with Dr. McCartney. The homework site sucks as well as the lab but if you show up with the intent to learn and are willing to do the work outside the class you will surely get the grade you want. Her teaching style can seem a little boring if this if you've already seen the material but she is good.
Dr Mac rocks!! Her tests are super fair and she gives a mock exam the week before. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow, and she is super accessible outside of class for help or to go over a past test. Took her again for 120
leaving the review I wish I would have read before taking dr. McCartneys class! DO NOT TAKE HER FOR GEN CHEM! She makes it so much more difficult than it needs to be. On average, 20+ online homework assignments per week + a weekly quiz. No one ever finishes the exams in time bc she gives too many problems in too little time. Guaranteed anxiety.
Just got done with the 2nd exam for the semester... I feel violated by how hard she made that test. NOT a good way to feel when you start spring break.
Very lecture heavy. If you dont go you will not learn anything and her powerpoints have no work shown so you have to go. Clicker points everyday. Uses ALEKS which is the worst homework system ever. I spend hours finishing topics after topics. Tests are on the difficult side. I would choose another professor if theres a choice.
Incredibly rude. Frequently snaps at her students. Jams an hour worth of calculations into a 50 minute exam mixed with theory questions. There really are no good chem 120 profs at A&M but she is just awful.
This Professor gives extremely difficult tests that do not reflect the difficulty of homework assignments and lecture material. The average on tests as a class is a 60-70. ALEKS, the homework system she uses, is by far the most torturous HW system I have ever used--excessively cumbersome and will get in the way of a lot of other HW.
I was on edge taking McCartney after Collins CHEM 111. Despite my initial bias, McCartney was a much easier professor and is so helpful outside of class. She provides so many resources to prepare for class and while lectures may not be as entertaining as Collins she is definitely easier. One downside of both is their use of ALEKS. I HATE ALEKS!!!!
DR MAC IS THE BEST!!!! The class is incredibly organized, she is super accessible for questions, lets you look over your tests & will explain what you did wrong. Has never taken more than 24 hours to get test grades back. She explains things so well and is always SUPER clear with her expectations. She wants you to do well! Love her!!
Shes not the easiest professor for 119, but she is super clear about her expectations and grading! Shes very no-nonsense but it makes for a really clear cut class. Also, her practice tests helped prepare me really well for exams!
Clicker questions are huge for extra points. I love McCartney, such a goof ball who is always making fun of herself. Makes chemistry fun. Exams are the exact same as her practice exams. Straight forward and easy. Only downfall is ALEKS for homework, but don't let the homework system make you not take her!
I loved having McCartney as a chem 120 prof! She is super engaging in lecture, and always takes the time to answer any questions in class. The tests are almost exactly like the mock exams, and if you just do the homework and the mocks she gives you, you'll be fine. The only part I don't like about the class is the ALEKS homework, but it's not bad
Dr. Mac is great at teaching, she is straight forward and all of the material is in the lectures. However, ALEKS is the most annoying and tedious homework portal and I just don't recommend it. Her tests are not hard, they are fair, however, they are made of very few questions and its easy to get a bad grade. She is not comprehensible.
I took Mccartney fall 2019 for chem 119 and thought it would be good to continue with her into 120. This was a huge mistake and Ive never been more stressed about a class. Her exams are difficult and ALEKS homework takes up all of your time to where you wont be able to get other classes homework done. I truly recommend finding another professor.
I had McCartney for both Chem 119 and 120! While I thought things would be better second semester, they were significantly worse. This professor has a bad attitude and will snap at her students. She depends on systems like ALEKS to teach the material and it can be very stressful. Dear Ags, AVOID HER if you care about your mental health and GPA.
McCartney heavily relies on the homework system to do the teaching, which isn't even helpful. She uses ALEKS, which is an awful learning system. She also is disrespectful and can be so rude and harsh for no reason. I really wanted to like her but she made chem 120 much more dreadful than it needed to be.
Rude lady. Can't stand the ALEKS system she uses. Don't take.
chem 120 with doc mac is the most time consuming course that i have ever taken at a&m. the material itself should not be as hard as it is made out to be. there's so many opportunities to fail in her class. look around before making this your choice.
As of right now, Dr. Mac has been making this global pandemic worse that I thought it could be. It seems as if all she wants is to make it harder when we are living out of the ordinary circumstances. It's for this that I can safely say that I don't recommend her at all. Plus Aleks is the worst thing EVER! DONT TAKE HER, she makes you work for it!
Dr. McCartney is the better of the Chem profs I have had. ALEKS may be a pain but if you can get all of the homework done its an easy grade. Her tests are pretty short, 14 questions, so if you get a few wrong you won't do well. Despite that, she is one of the nicest people and will help you almost any time of day.
She's very good at explaining concepts and example problems, and the problems she does in class are very reminiscent of her exam questions. Aleks is a grind, but is very useful in preparing for exams. People who complain about her class being too hard are in for a harsh reality check when they get into OChem and more advanced classes.
Dr. Mac is a great person but she really makes you work for that A. The ALEKS homework system is the worst and the work load for this class is heavy. Exam 3, 4 and the final all fall within the last 4 weeks of class and its hard to keep up with since things have moved online this semester. You should be fine if you spend 2+hrs on chem everyday.
McCartney isn't a bad prof to take for Chem, she's really nice and passionate at what she does. Chemistry is difficult but McCartney makes it easier to understand. Super nice during office hours and easy to reach. Biggest downside is the homework, ALEKS sucks. Tests are a bit tough but she posts practice tests that are helpful. Go to SI!
Mccartney could care less if her students pass. She openly admitted in a mass email that her average class scores for 4 years straight on an exam were 60's. She will never curve, even during a literal pandemic, despite the fact other profs allowed their students open note tests (and still curved the grades), and made their final optional. Avoid her
Dr. McCartney can be very rude at times during class but she was still a good professor. She makes the class hard but the expectations are always very clear and the practice problems are very similar to the practice problems. She works very hard to give us what we need to succeed and the videos really did help me during the pandemic.
The lectures are extremely boring and material is often just thrown together. The transition to online for other classes a bit difficult but she absolutely made it terrible. She does not care about your grade and has shown that averages of past classes were failing. Do not expect a curve at all.
doc mac has wrecked my mental health. gen chem is hard but she makes it awful. she doesnt offer any incentives while other profs are extremely flexible. she doesnt seem to care if her students fail and its sad. a lot of good students have had their gpas wrecked solely because of her. take Collins. heard hes tough but at least nice and humane.
Mac would send several emails a day clarifying content, giving us resources, & even working out difficult hw topics. She gave plenty of resources necessary to succeed in the class. negative comments are from bitter students who thought they wouldn't have to earn their grade anymore bc of COVID. Mac handled COVID the best out of all my profs. 12/10
Doctor Mac doesnt care about her students whatsoever or she would have made the transition online easier. All her tests went from multiple choice to short answer so she didnt have to grade and made it harder for us. Doesnt curve any of the tests and the lectures are very content heavy. Too much material to cover and too little time.
Dr. McCartney was definitely not the best professor I've had. The transition to online school definitely made things worse and chaotic. She uses ALEKS for the homework, which made things even more stressful in my opinion and she uses iClicker so attendance is mandatory. This class is definitely one you need to work hard in if you want to succeed.
The class was alright. The transition to online classes was a bit wonky, but she made the transition smooth. Online or not, her exams are difficult. Class averages for exams tend to be on the failing side. BEWARE OF THE HOMEWORK SYSTEM SHE USES. ALEKS WILL PUNT YOU INTO THE SUN.
She is a very nice lady and can make her lectures fun with her positive attitude but this was the 2nd time I have taken her and have had to drop. There is so much homework, if you are a full time student I do not recommend taking this class. Lot's of homework weekly, if you miss class it's hard to catch up. The labs are lot's of work as well :(
I had Bethel for 119 and he was really difficult so switching to Mccarntey for 120 was so much better. The homework system ALEKS was VERY time consuming but I recommend writing down at least one problem from each topic on paper. It helped me a lot! Also exams were similar to her practice ones. Exams were 14 questions which hurts if you miss a lot
McCartney has a very synthetic personality and ALEKS was a complete waste of time. During the COVID pandemic, she was not very accommodating and A LOT of people complained about her. If you can avoid taking her, I would, but if you can't, she isn't THAT bad. Definitely invest in some tutoring though.
She goes slowly and makes sure she answers as many questions as possible. She's pretty accessible, but this class takes up a lot of time (ALEKS is a lot and clicker questions during every lecture). However, if you study well, do the clicker questions, and do the practice tests, you'll do well on the tests (tests are similar to those questions)
I loved Dr. McCartney, she really care about her students. She is very straight up about her expectations for the class, and tests are difficult, but similar to mock exams. The class offers so many review sessions for exams, and the labs are pretty straight forward. ALEKS homework will be awful though, so make time for hours of work daily for chem.
I had so many amazing professors this semester she wasnt one of them
Doc Mac is a great professor. I had her for Chem 119 and 120 and got an A both times. She prepares you for her tests with practice tests and is easily accessible through email and office hours for help. She throughly explains the material and loves what she does. I highly recommend Dr. McCartney! I also suggest attending SI sessions
Dr. McCartney is a great choice for chem! She is extremely diligent and gives very clear expectations for how to do well on the tests. The mock tests are very helpful. Take your time doing the homework bc it will benefit you for tests. She uses ALEKS for hw. I had a hard prof for 119 so it was great having McCartney for 120. She is super helpful!
Dr. McCartney is a wonderful professor. This is not an easy class, because you must really work to understand chemistry topics, but Dr. McCartney makes it manageable. She is always willing to help out students who are working hard to succeed in the course and truly cares about her students. Put in the hours to truly learn and you will succeed.
I loved her until COVID hit. She made on line classes mores stressful and exams harder to take. She then makes it sounds like she would take some of the finals grading easier at the end of the semester, then did nothing. But she said she was "PrOUd oF Us" so I guess that's what's really important isn't it?!?
I've never grasped Chem until taking w/ Dr. Mac. She makes material explicitly clear/easy 2 understand in lectures. There's HW twice a week but if u stay on top of it it actually helps u study ahead of time/be prepared. Tests r hard but she makes practice test4 each one that help a TON. Ppl complain on here a lot but its totally doable. Go kill it!
McCartney is a great professor. She is tough, but also truly cares about her students. Do your best to get high points for homework, lab, etc. because it can buffer your grade. I received a mix of A, B's, and even a D on my tests, but I still ended with an A because of my final and the homework. ALEKS is a bit annoying but actually helps you learn.
I had McCartney for CHEM 119/120. She is a very nice lady, but a very difficult professor. Her class is very fast paced, VERY fast. Also, her grading is extremely unforgiving. Overall, if you do not easily understand basic chemistry, her class will be very hard. P.S NO EXTRA CREDIT EVER.
Shes a nice professor people wise, but her class is hard.
Professor McCartney is one of the best chem profs ever!! Her lectures are very thorough and she gives a lot of practice before the exam. If you want to excel in the class, you should go to SI it's also super helpful. But be prepared to work hard in this class.
Dr. McCartney was amazing! Her exams were not easy BUT she posted mock exams that were very similar and helpful. She was very organized and had a set schedule which I found really helpful as far as knowing when what was do. She did a really good job at working through problems and explaining things.
Dr. Mac is the best professor for chemistry. She made me love chemistry as she is extremely interactive during lectures. She is so organized and her slides have everything you could possibly need for class. Her mock exams resemble exam content. Aleks isn't that bad if you don't procrastinate. Take her! She will solidify your knowledge in chem
worst prof ive ever had
I took Dr. McCartney in Spring 2020 when everything went crazy & she was so great throughout all of it! She's very organized, will never test over something she doesn't cover, & is always eager to help you if you reach out! Actual exams are almost identical to practice exams, so take them seriously. ALEKS sucks, but so does homework in general.
I loved Doc Mac! Her lectures are just like the test and she creates mock exams that resemble the test exactly! She is also super sweet during office hours if you don't understand a specific topic!
Love her class! Very good lectures and makes sure we are well prepared. Definitely would take a class from her again.
One of the best professors at a&m. She works with you and will help you understand the topics. Although she does assign a lot of homework, she explains the material very clearly. 10/10 professor. Also exams can be difficult... so study.
Dr. Mac was one my first professors I had in college, her material is easy to understand, plus her slides that she posts before class have a lot of information that is helpful. She does a lot of in class examples, which are similar to the questions on the test, just worded differently. Took her for CHEM 119/120. Homework sucks but it's doable.
Dr. McCartney is truly a gem. During her lectures, you actually participate and actively learn rather than sitting there and watching her balance equations. She answers questions in a very clear and concise manner. Dr. McCartney also has office hours in which you can ask any questions over homework. 10/10 will take her class for next sem
TAKE DOC MAC! I dont think I would do good in chem had I not taken her class. Its a very time consuming course, however if you do all the work youre guaranteed to make a good grade. Shes very good at thoroughly explaining topics, and she really does care. You dont have to make As on the tests in order to get an A average.
Professor McCartney is probably one of the best professors I have had so far. The class is definitely hard and fast-paced in general, regardless of the professor, but she is very accessible and definitely prepares you for the exams. There is a lot of homework but it isn't just busy work, it definitely helps you understand things.
Dr. McCartney is truly the best general chemistry prof hands down. She is super clear on her expectations and has mock exams that mimic actual exams. if you put in the work, you should definitely get the grade you want. If you are looking for an amazing chem prof, take McCartney! Ive recommended her to everyone
An amazing professor that cares about her students.
I absolutely love this prof. She has a clear outline for her class: watch lecture videos before class and then come and do practice problems during class to make sure you understood the material. Her course load is decent and basically forces you to refresh on topics and she's great at explaining chem to anyone regardless of your proficiency.
I almost failed high school chemistry but Doc Mac changed my life. She is so passionate about chem & giving us every opportunity to excel. Don't get me wrong, its a hard class and you really have to work for it but she's so excited to come to class each day so it's worth it. Definitely doable. Dont expect bonus points OR curves that doesnt happen.
Doc Mac is an angel. She truly cares about her students. This course is undeniably challenging, but her course design is set up to help you succeed SO LONG AS YOU WORK FOR IT. She has office hours, SI sessions, mock exams, and every resource available to you! If you are seriously ready to work, you will be just fine, promise. TAKE DOC MAC! :)
She is absolutely the best professor I've had so far at A&M. She truly cares for her students and will make time for you to understand the material. She explains everything so well and make sure to study the mock exams. I highly recommend taking her class.
Dr Mac really cares about her students learning and being successful. The class is structured in a very organized way and has lots of assignments that can pull up your grade if you bomb a test. Each test has mock exams which are very similar to the actual test so overall I felt very prepared in her class and was able to be successful.
Prof Mccartney is by far my FAVORITE PROFESSOR. Chem 119 is hard no doubt about it, but her explanations of the work is fairly clear and straight forward. Her mock exams are very very similar to her actual exams so make sure to do the mock exams. WARNING: LOTS OF HW IS GIVEN !! But if you study hard and give it your all youre guaranteed to pass!
Doc Mac is great! If you just want an easy A, that's not how it works. Any chem class requires you to study and put in the work. Class is very well structured and organized. You watch lecture videos before every class and they are very clear and well explained. Dr. Bethel is more chill and laidback, but seats fill up quick. Don't be scared of her!
Doc Mac helped me understand chem like no other. She made 8am lectures bearable. Her class is ALOT of work, but what chem class isn't. She gives you all the resources you need to succeed, such as mock exams & a SI. If you put work into it, you can easily succeed in her class. She is super helpful when you have questions! Overall would recommend :)
McCartney was an amazing professor for Chem 119. I'm taking her again next semester because I loved her so much. Lecture videos are posted the day before class, then the lecture time is spent doing practice problems with her. Exams are challenging, but her mock exams help a lot. ALEKS homework is annoying but the extra practice is helpful.
Doc Mac made me like chemistry a lot more than I thought I would. Not an easy A class, but it can be done and she really wants her students to do well. We had a class GroupMe that she was in, and she would always answer questions students had pretty quickly. TONS of homework. Take the mock exams a bunch of times, they help a lot!! Lab is fun too
Gotta show up to class to answer REEF questions, and daily participation questions on eCampus. Neither are that bad. Work out the mock exams over and over again, they're really similar to the tests. Decent choice for 119, I'm taking her again for 120. HW is ALEKS, it isn't that hard, but don't wait the day it's due to do it.
Doc Mac was honestly an amazing professor. She knows how to explain the concepts of the class very well. Only reason I got a C in her class was because I was extremely lazy and barely studied. If you don't make the same mistake as I did, I can assure that with enough study time and practice, the A is very achievable.
Doc Mac is the best professor at A&M... she cares about her students and wants you to understand the material. Her lectures are very engaging. Her office hours are very helpful and she answers emails FAST! You do have to work for your grade, but she makes chemistry much easier. Highly recommend taking her!
It is a flipped classroom setup allowing for more practice which I greatly appreciated. However, there was a lot of homework online and videos to watch.
If every teacher did online learning like she did, online class would so much more beneficial. Doc Mac is so good, I worked my ass off in this class but what's good is she gives the material to work on and you don't have to google for all the help. Mock exams are imperative to test success, do them and then do them again. an A is possible.
she's super helpful when giving feedback & lectures are easy to understand. Workload outside of class is a bit more than others but the format really helps to cement concepts. Really math based. Watch the lectures & take notes before class to get points for reef questions. ALEKS is annoying but not hard. Mock tests are like real exams so do them!
She WAS not the best professor at all, i only got a B because I already knew chemistry in high school, DONT TAKE HER, her exams were hard and you had to go fast
Dr. McCartney is definitely the best chem prof at A&M! She is hilarious and keeps students engaged during class. She truly wants her students to succeed and is always willing to help. If you go to class and do the mock exams she provides you will be fine in this class.
I took CHEM 119 and 120 with McCartney, she's amazing, one of the best profs I've had. The people here complaining about Dr. McCartney are those who expected an easy grade and a blow off course. Chemistry itself is super hard, but McCartney has very clear expectations and always gives mock exams and tons of time outside class to answer questions.
Took her for Gen chem 1 & 2 but had to drop 120 when the pandemic hit because she made the transition online so awful. She is unnecessarily rude, snaps at students out of nowhere, doesnt give enough time on exams, & does not care whether you pass or fail. ALEKS homework alone for this class will leave you with no time for your other class work.
Doc Mac is probably the best Chem prof. you could have. You have notes you have to take before class, and during class you do practice problems. She's quick to respond on both email and through the GroupMe. She provides mock exams, and she has SI sessions for extra help. Chem is already difficult, but with Doc Mac it's quite manageable!
This class was one of the best classes I've had in the pandemic. Her class format (lecture videos beforehand, problem-solving lectures, tons of online practice) may not be for everyone but I personally loved it as you could do it at your own pace. Prof was very easy to contact for help and there were many resources to help if you're stuck.
I hate and suck at chem but I LOVE THIS PROF. Everything is so easy to understand and I was able to get As on the first 2 exams. She is so communicative and wants to help her students succeed in her class. Her lectures are amazing and everything is so well organized. In class participation matters (REEF) and ALEKS is a pain but its doable with her!
Pre-lecture videos and going to class are a MUST. Great prof who is willing to help but you need to put the effort in as well. The mock exams before the real exams as well as her review video of the mock exam will help you more than just studying. ALEKS can change your overall grade by an entire letter if you aren't careful - do your homework
The Aleks homework she gives out is enough to make you have a mental breakdown. you are required to watch a pre lecture video the days before your lecture, meaning you have to listen to chem lectures everyday. She requires too much and does wayyyyy too much.
Doc Mac is a great lecturer! I've learned so much from this class! The only thing I would say is that she isn't the nicest person. Sometimes, she seems like she doesn't want to be there or just doesn't care about your grade. But she's definitely your best bet for chem 120! Go to class, do homework, and study the mock for tests and you'll pass!!
The flipped format is a really effective teaching method for me. It means theres a lot of lectures (at least 1 per day). There are easy points in Clicker and Participation Questions (75% gets you full credit), and the exams are just like the mock exams she releases. Really solid professor choice and easy A if you put in minimal effort.
Doc Mac was the best prof I had for both generally chemistry 119 and 120. She was able to take a class of 400 people and make it feel as if she was teaching to me directly one on one. Participating in class and doing her lecture videos before class is important, but if you do that then keeping up with the class isn't a problem. She is very caring.
Chem is not an easy A, period. Doc Mac does an amazing job explaining the concepts and giving you the tools to succeed. I put a large amount of outside study time into this course and it paid off. She's willing to answer questions in groupme, office hrs, & inclass&Gives mock exams. Overall I would highly recommend as long as you work for the grade.
Lecture heavy and lots of participation questions. Homework heavy but doable. Kind and available outside of class. Provided mock exams and solutions videos. Math heavy, but passable if you put forth the effort and studying. Gave reminders and updates before every class, her emails are very detailed and specific. Overall, great professor.
I had Doc Mac for CHEM119 and CHEM120 and she was amazing. Her class is very structured and organized and her method of teaching is very clear. She explains everything in detail and her mock exams are exactly like the real exams. Honestly, I wish all my profs classes were structured like hers
Dr. McCartney gets a bad rep. Chem 120 in itself is a tough class. If you are willing to put the work in, you will do well. She gives so many opportunities to make up for bad grades. Make sure to answer all of the participation questions, attend lecture, take notes on the LTVs, and TAKE THE MOCK EXAMS. Fabulous prof, she really does care.
Don't know why Dr. McCartney has a low rating on here. SHE IS AMAZING. I sucked at chem119, but made an A in this class. Her teaching style is great. Watch videos before class and practice problems during (REEF). She explains things so well and has mock exams for each test. An 88 is an A in her class. ALEKS and ecampus participation questions (HW)!
100% my favorite professor here at TAMU. She truly cares for her students and you can learn a lot about chemistry from her. The biggest tips are to stay on top of the homework in ALEKS, DO THE MOCK REVIEWS (they are live savers), and make sure you watch the lectures before class as you are supposed to.
Best prof I've had so far. Flipped classroom style so more examples are done during class. There is a lot of homework; however, if you do it all and well, grades will reflect. She explains things thoroughly and as many times as needed. She always responds to emails or GroupMe messages quickly. Not one complaint with Doc Mac.
Doc Mac was a great professor. She always laid out exactly what was expected of us and sent out countless reminders of due dates. She tries to make her classes as smooth and streamlined as possible. I took her for both Chem 119 and Chem 120, I do not regret it at all.
I loved Doc Mac! I was horrible at chem in high school but the way she taught made me understand chemistry way better! This class requires a lot of work- I think I did chem hw, lectures, or lab almost everyday. Also, DO the mock exams!! They seriously help so much. Overall super sweet prof and amazing lecturer!
Kind and well-organized professor, however she is not for everyone. If you struggle with flipped classrooms, this course is not for you. Most times when I went to ask her questions, her first response is "watch the videos", which really set me back. She is really good at providing resources, & depending on your learning style may be great for you.
An extremely solid choice! She clearly teaches you what you need to know in order to do well on the exams. Her practice exams for each test are GOLD. I highly recommend you master those before an exam and you will do just fine. She is also very caring towards her students. Lectures are engaging and I responded really well to her style.
AMAZING professor!!! I had Doc Mac for both CHEM119 and CHEM120. Her lectures were videos and her class times were used for practicing problems, which I personally loved because I could go back and review material I missed or didn't quite understand. I really enjoyed her teaching style and the fact that she provided multiple examples of questions.
TAKE MCCARTNEY!! Her class is a lot of work, but she teaches really well! Mock exams prepare you for the real exams, but they are free response. Do the homework and you will do well. She is really sweet and really cares about her students.
Take her if you can, she makes the material easy to learn and understand.
I got an A, but only due to learning from outside the course. She has lecture videos, but they are long and unhelpful for those who like to ask questions while reviewing material. There are definitely better professors for this course, however your success in here may be better based on your learning style with flipped classrooms.
Doc Mac is probably the best chem professor there is! Although I did hw or lecture notes every day, it wasn't all too bad: maybe like an hour or two out of my day. She is really funny and provides MANY opportunities to get extra points on REEF or on tests. The practice exams are VERY similar to the actual exams so do those and you're good! TAKE HER
Doctor McCartney is the best chem professor at A&M. If you have to take this class, take hers, take hers, TAKE HERS. Her tests are very similar to the mock exams she give out before the test and she does an amazing job at explaining the concepts. She is very approachable and easy to ask questions of
Doc Mac is a great professor! There are lecture videos that you must watch every night before lecture, although I don't know if this is the case for in person classes as well. There are clicker questions worth points every lecture. If you attend lecture and go to SI sessions and you're willing to work you'll be fine!
Dr. Mccartney was a good chem prof and she explains topics very well. She is a nice lady and very organized making sure everyone is caught up on due dates. The class is graded from 4 exams and a final mainly. The reef and participation questions help your grade a lot. I would take her again if necessary.
doc mac is the best chem prof ever. I took her for chem 119 and 120 bc i love her so much. she has 5 exams including the final, meaning that even though i failed 3 exams, i still got an A in the class. Lots of homework and lecture videos, but if you stay on top of things an do all the mock exams/extra help things, you will ace this. TAKE HER!
BEST CHEM PROF @ a&m... she provides mock exams for all exams (would rec trying all bc they r harder than actual tests) Weekly HW & practice problems for grade during lecture, gives u great practice ***Chem is already a very tough subject*** best prof I've had so far in terms of teaching difficult material, also u will have 2 do notes b4 class
Doc Mac is the BEST professor I have ever had at TAMU. She is amazing at explaining material! She responds to her emails very quickly & she is very kind. The class is SUPER organized. There are so many resources like lecture videos, mock exams, and participation questions. You can also go to SI Sessions. It is very possible to make an A!
Doc Mac has been the best professor I've had at TAMU. ALEKS is annoying, but her lecture topic videos will explain the stuff that we are going over in ALEKS sometimes. She offers REEF and eCampus participation questions that will help boost your grade up a bit, but she doesn't curve exams. Hard class made easy with this great professor.
I had McCartney for 119 & 120 and got B's both semesters. Chem 120 the hardest class I have ever taken, but McCartney was an AMAZING prof. This class is SO much work but you will really learn the material. Go to office hours, SI sessions, and do the mock exams if you want an A. If it is reassuring, I failed 3/5 of the exams and still pulled a B :)
Work the practice exams, they're identical to the tests. She's pretty easy and very thorough. She takes a long time to explain things in class because she's so thorough, but it does make sense. Overall, a hard class but a solid prof.
I do not understand how people enjoyed this class. She was not helpful with questions and would tell people to look back at the videos. Most of the time the ALEKS hw would take people 9+ hours to finish, leaving you no room for your other classes. This class DESTROYED my mental health so I withdrew. She comes off as rude but people see her as nice.
This class may be great for people who succeed with this learning style, but I genuinely couldn't pass. No matter how much I studied/worked/did things outside of class I was failing tests BAD. There is an insane amount of homework, so if this is your one "difficult" class then you'll probably be fine, but I barely had time for anything else.
I always thought I was bad at chem, turns out I just had bad teachers. Doc Mac is the only option worth taking for intro chem. You watch lectures and do aleks outside of class, and then mostly reef during class. It's a lot of homework but her method works. She is also super organized and tells you exactly what you need to do. HIGHLY recommend!
Doc Mac is a great professor. She provided tons and tons of practice and resources and even answered questions outside of class. Lectures were very helpful and she really provides all of the resources you need to get an A.
I studied a lot for this course and took it during the spring semester and still failed her exams. I would spend hours doing the homework for this class and that was literally all I did the entire semester and ended up having to drop the class. It is also filled with lectures you need to watch before class and homework on ALEKS that would drain you
im convinced the people giving her bad reviews didnt actually take her. shes the nicest, most caring professor ive ever had. theres a lot of homework but its not busy work, its good practice and helps YOU. she also gives out 2 practice exams before the actual exams and they are very similar to what youll see on exam day. watch the lectures.
Doc Mac was the best professor. Her lecture videos explained exactly how to do everything. ALEKS was just busywork, if you take good notes on her lecture videos and actively participate in Reef and do her mock exams you will get an A. She gave students every resource possible to do well in her course. I had her for 119 and 120
HIGHLY recommend this prof. She basically dumbs down chemistry and the tests are not tricky. Straight forward and exam is basically a copy of the first mock exam that she works out for you. She has added so much cushion to your grade (free points) and even a curve to get an A. (88-100 A). Best prof for chem, I'm even taking her for chem 120.
Hands down, an easy chill professor. The bad ratings just come from those who probably dont pay attention or dont try. Shes not difficult at all. Lectures are online prerecorded and practice problems are in class. If you took AP Chem, it wont be a problem. If you didnt, just pay attention and try. Shes not hard
Doc Mac's class is not joke. I have never applied myself so much to schoolwork before 119. Her lecture videos are SO helpful, and her lectures are mainly practice questions. You have to grind all semester to get a good grade, but that is the nature of a high-level science. Take her and you will have unlimited resources. Im taking her 119 and 120.
Doc. Mac was a decent professor. All her material was taught through prerecorded videos that we had to take notes on before class. She gives clicker questions on the material so watching them beforehand is a must. She was nice and gave practice exams that were helpful but her class is definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken.
She is an amazing chemistry teacher. She is very good at explaining complicated topics and making them easy. She does give a lot of homework and you have in class participation questions so you have to go to class. She gives mock exams before every exam so you have lots of stuff to practice. Overall a great professor!
Please save yourself the trouble and get another chem professor. I put my all into this course and it still wasn't enough. When asking questions her responses would come off as sarcastic and rude. She assigns homework on ALEKS and the amount of time you spend getting it done is RIDICULOUS. Would never take her class again. She wasn't helpful at all
The amount of homework given will make you want to rip your hair out and cry. I had no time for my other classes. She is very condescending and does not help a lot. I know chem is bad but I truly could not handle how hard this class was.
Dr. McCartney is a solid choice for Chem 119. I like her flipped classroom model and her instructional videos are good. It is an exam heavy class but the labs are pretty easy and homework is participation so make sure to do well on those to leave a point cushion on exams. Biggest advice make friends in the class to ask questions when confused.
Doc. Mac was great! Her class is flipped lecture so you really need to pay attention to the videos and ALEKS homework outside of class. I would say the lab section of the class was harder, so pay attention there because the TA's are very meticulous. Not an easy A, but not super hard! She's great at walking through the concepts in class and helpful.
Took Doc Mac Spring '21 with a flipped classroom format - posted YouTube videos and gave participation questions before lecture, then answered questions and do REEF questions during lecture. Practice exams similar to real exams & ALEKS hw could take kind of long at times, but Doc Mac really showed that she cared and wanted us to do well. Recommend.
A solid prof choice. ALEKS is kinda annoying but makes you understand the material. I though the videos were informative and helpful, but sometimes were long so I would put them on double speed. She doesn't offer extra credit, but the course is curved
McCartney does a great job of explaining concepts in ways that will make sense regardless of your chemistry background. She uses a flipped-classroom style of teaching, which I found very helpful. The class is a lot of work but it is manageable. The first few exams are easy but don't slack off because they do get harder.
Chen 119 is difficult in general, but if your willing to put in the effort, than her class is great. Her mock exams helped me study for her exams so much, Im pretty sure they are the only reason I was able to get an A, coupled with her SI sessions, they saved me. Shes a super positive professor, and is normally really good at answering questions.
I had a terrible experience in 119 so I was super scared for 120. Dr. McCartney completely changed that. She sends out videos to watch before the lecture and then in class you practice the material. Before Exams, she posts two practice tests and has a review video. It can be a lot of work at times but it is so worth it. Take Her!!
Dr. McCartney has honestly set the bar very high for professors. Her structure of the class is awesome. Her videos make the concepts easy to grasp and lectures are engaging, interesting and most importantly they solidify your knowledge of the concepts. I would absolutely recommend Dr. McCartney to anyone taking chemistry.
Just take a different professor.
Dr. Mac really cares about her students and is great about answering everyone's questions. You definitely need to do a lot of studying outside of class if you want a good grade. She posts two to three exam reviews for each exam which are very helpful. She even posts videos working through one of the reviews for each exam which is very helpful.
I loved Dr. Mac! She has a flipped classroom, which I personally loved, as we had more practice during class. There is quite a bit of homework with ALEKS, daily canvas problems, and the lectures, but I found it really effective at preventing you from falling behind in the course material. Dr. McCartney really cares and teaches very clearly.
Took Dr. Mac for both 119 and 120 and did well. Her lectures are very useful and you must attend for clicker questions. She provides practice exams and is very easy to talk to in office hours. I would recommend attending SI if you need additional practice since homework was not very useful for me.
McCartney is a really good choice for CHEM 119/120 if you are willing to put in work. Her class is flipped, and it can sometimes be a lot to juggle between keeping up with watching the lecture videos before class and staying on top of the homework, but it is very manageable. She is very thorough in lecture and good at explaining things in depth.
She is super nice and friendly but passive aggressive when she isn't shown the respect she deserves. Participation was a grade so show up to class. As long as you do the mock exams and watch the lecture videos (flip classroom), you should be fine. Ask her for help when you need it, don't wait since she gets swamped with emails during exam time.
doc mac will be your saving grace for gen chem. she gives you every resource to succeed, and interacts often in the class groupme. flipped classroom, reef questions every class, and two aleks hw assignments every week. time consuming but clear guidelines and consistent class format.
Do practice exams! They are exactly what are on the test and attend SI if needed for extra problems. Doc Mac is amazing at explaining how to do the math problems and concepts. She is very accessible and willing to help you if you have a question. Flipped classroom videos can be time consuming, but they are very thorough.
Lots of work outside of class but I like it because practice questions are done in class which allows you to become confident in the material. Do the practice tests and youll be fine for the actual tests
She is soooo funny. Has review sessions for tests. Lecture is very entertaining. Has a flipped classroom. You watch videos before class and then soley work on practice problems during lecture. I love her!
Dr. McCartney is a good professor, the only thing is that her class is A LOT of work. Daily participation, 2x a week homework that can take some time, and there is a lab attached to this class. She is good at teaching and her practice tests are a good measure of what is on the test. Overall for a class like 120 she is probably the best option.
Mock exams were very useful for exams. Lots of ALEKS homework and she did flipped classroom so at least 10 PQ's on top of an avg of 10 topics on ALEKS a weeks which can be lengthy and unnecessary. She is repetitious and broke it down step by step; nice and passive aggressive. Take her if you want to understand and have time to do all the homework.
I love this prof because she is passionate about chemistry and makes sure you understand the material. It is a flipped classroom so you do have to watch videos and put in the work. As long as you participate in class and keep up with the work you are going to do amazing!
Chem is a hard class, but if I had to take someone, it would be McCartney. Lots of work, lots of tears, but you'll make it. Her exams are hard and are mainly free response. Be on your game for her class!!!! For studying do the mock exam over and over again and look briefly over the notes. If you want multiple choice exams, take another teacher.
Chem is going to be hard no matter what, but McCartney's class is very organized and she gives lots of practice problems which all help a lot on test. There is a lot of hw, canvas problems, and in class clicker but they all help to boost your overall grade. McCartney responds to emails well but she seemed to be extra agitated this semester.
Chem is hard but McCartney had a firmly structured class. There is a lot of homework (Aleks and daily canvas questions) along with the practice questions done during the lecture. I think she was fair, but the flipped classroom meant lots of work outside of class and dead time during the lecture. She has lots of office hours/ tutoring opportunities
Awesome prof but be prepared to work for your grade. Exams are tolerable as she gives plenty of study material. Very kind lady and seems very eager to help when she can. Overall awesome prof
The class is very well organized. The exams are almost identical to the mock exam. A lot of outside homework and in class participation that will help carry your grade. This is a flipped classroom so every other day, you will have to spend an hour watching the lecture videos. The exams are math heavy and free response. Lots of partial credit!
Take Dr. McCartney if you are good at chemistry. There is a lot of outside homework and it is a flipped classroom style. The reason she gets a low rating is because she wasn't a nice person. If you asked her a question she made you feel very dumb about it and talked to us like we were 7. A lot of hw too so watch out. I wouldn't take her again.
Class is flip-flop so most of the time you watch videos about topic before lecture and then practice in class except for ALEKS. The test are not worth too much so if you do bad on one, you still have a chance to do well in the class. Attendance is pretty mandatory if you want to do well. Not all information is on the slides!!
Stephanie is conflicting. Her grading criteria makes it to where you can fail a couple tests and still manage an A. However, she uses a flipped classroom style to teach, and tends to overexplain very elementary topics. Only positive is that only 540/1000 of the points in the course are tests. Only take her if you have no chemistry background at all
Unless you have taken a AP chem course before, you will struggle in this class. Even a tutor didn't help, the exams are all free response and she says she gives partial credit but she doesn't. She's a great person but the course is very difficult.
Flipped classroom was well organized. tests were not weighted too heavy, so you could afford an okay grade on a test or two. Gave an opportunity for extra credit on the final and is very transparent about grades. She will show your grade after ever exam, so you should always know where you stand in the class. Lectures were fairly entertaining.
Great class. Would recommend taking this professor. Flipped classroom was nice. Gave the opportunity to work more problems in class. iClicker questions during class, so I would go to class to get your points. If need extra help, I recommend going to an SI session at least once a week. I wish I had her for 119.
I loved her! You watch pre-Lecture videos that are long and then you go to class and practice the problems that the videos went over! Test are just like Mocks so do the mocks over and over until you understand! Tests are 13- 14 ques free response but chem 120 is literally all math! The final was MC n quite difficult n she didnt give us a mock!
McCartney was a good professor for most of the course, but the final put me below an A. I made Bs on all of my exams before the final and made in A in the lab. However, the average grade for the final was a 60. Overall, she was not the worst professor but I would take someone else if I could go back. Take her for CHEM 119, not 120.
This is the first and only time where i felt i benefitted from a flipped classroom. McCartney expects you to be 1000% responsible for yourself, but offers every opportunity for success. i didnt work as hard as i couldve (why i got a B), but she grades fast, sets clear expectations, and provides mock exams. chem is hard, but this is your best shot.
I found Dr. McCartney's class very easy. The most important thing you can do to set yourself up for success is to take notes, rewrite your notes, and do the practice tests before exams. Otherwise, I found her very annoying and thought she was very petty and resembled a high-school teacher. Overall: easy class with a flipped classroom design.
I took 107 the previous semester, so I knew about half of the material taught. She assigns recorded lectures to watch, then goes over material in class. The homework is not too bad, but study study study for the exams! Watch the reviews of the practice exams and watch the lecture videos!
She's a great prof who explains things very clearly, but she does not hold your hand through this course. her class takes up a lot of time and work, but you have every resource to succeed. The PQ's and mock exams are extremely similar to the exams, so that's super helpful! I'd say Chem 119 is a sure shot with her, but 120 is a lot harder.
Doc Mac is a great professor! She's caring and I found her office hours very helpful! Her class is flipped which means there's a lot to do outside of class with ALEKS hws, participation q's, and watching lecture videos. I thought her lecture exams were pretty fair but you definitely need to study for them and the final was pretty rough.
The only people doing these ratings are the ones who got an A. This class was flipped so you do all your learning & watch lectures outside of class. Tons of ALEKS & canvas questions, and with lab stuff on top of that, you won't have much free time. Tests aren't always like the mock but they're always open ended. I strongly dislike chem but survived
Very outgoing and enthusiastic when she teaches. There's videos to watch before each class & iClicker problems during class. Exams are tough because there is so much to remember how to do, majority free response. I knew how to do each topic individually, but all together, my head was scrambled. There are 2 practice exams before each of the 4 exams.
Highly recommend taking Dr. McCartney for CHEM120! It's a tough class, and you'll have to put in many hours outside of class, but she makes it very doable. Her mock exams are usually consistent with the actual exams and she's very accessible and ready to help during office hours. Most of her exams are free-response so you have to know the material!
Dr. McCartney is amazing. She has a flipped classroom style where there are prelecture videos before class, and in class she does practice problems. Her videos are amazing and if you watch those and go to class you'll be fine. Overall, if you do all the work you can get an A in this class and you will actually learn chemistry.
Class is very organized and if you watch the prelecture videos and go to class for the practice problems she does you can do very well. I loved her class and took her for 119 as well. If you do all the work and organize yourself you'll be fine. Overall, great professor and I felt like I actually learned a lot.
Probably one of the best science profs at A&M. As someone who hated high school chemistry, I was able to do extremely well in both 119 and 120. She gives you clear instructions on what is expected and makes chemistry as easy as possible while still making sure you know the content. Do the mock exams and you'll be just fine.
Extremely organized. Chemistry can be challenging, but Doc Mac has pre-lecture videos, records her lectures, practice problems in class, provides mock exams, and is easily reached. Don't worry if you haven't taken chemistry since sophomore year of high school! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE TO TURN IN A LAB. GO TO CHEM OFFICE HOURS IN HELD 211!
Dr McCartney does her best to make this class accessible for everyone. The lecture videos are efficient and to the point and the homework gives plenty of practice. We used Aktiv this semester which was way easier than Aleks. This class was manageable even with others. Don't depend on the final, class average was a 50%. Do good on the first 2 tests.
If you put the work in you'll do fine. I made C on one exam/bombed a couple of quizzes and still made an A but I did dedicate my life to the class and would rewatch lectures after the week and redo participation question till you know them because they're essential study tools for exams! Talk to her and go to all office hours!
Doc Mac is a great Prof, I recommend her for any class she is teaching. She really cares about her students and designed the in-class/out-of-class teaching style in a way that really helps you LEARN the material as opposed to just memorize it. If you just try in this class and watch the videos before lecture, it should be easy to get a good grade.
Doc Mac is great and I would take her for any class she offers. The in-class/out-of-class Work is structured very well for LEARNING the material, not just memorizing it.
Dr. McCartney makes you do a lot of work outside of class like watching lecture videos and completing about five assignments each week, but it makes you very well prepared for the exam. She takes attendance during class through iClicker, so make sure to show up to every lecture. Exams are not super difficult and she offers partial credit.
McCarthy was amazing. She is such a kind woman and is always willing to work with you on things that you struggle with. Although you need to be in class for points, missing a few lectures will not put you behind. I hiiiighly recommend her.
She really does care about her students, and shes wicked quick with grading!
She genuinely puts in a lot of effort to make you understand the material. Despite the large class size, I was still able to learn because of her video lectures. Attendence is mandatory because of the iClicker. There is a good amount of work through ALEKS but it helps you genuinely learn before the exams.
She's not only nice but also cares about teaching. She does however have asynchronous lectures, which you need to watch before the face-to-face lectures if you want a good grade. Despite the difficulty and heavy workload, she explains the material extremely well and you learn it through all the work this class requires. Definitely recommend!
She really knows her stuff and sitting in class was enjoyable. She posts online video notes before class and then you do iClicker during class(attendance). Homework is ALEKs and Canvas questions which are totally manageable if you stay on top of it. Some tests were pretty math heavy. I def recommend her for 119.
Doc Mac was an amazing professor and really knows her stuff. Her exams are open-ended and usually have about 12-16 questions (NOT open note). I bombed the first exam and did well on the rest and came out with a B ,but I did dedicate my life to this class. You should do fine if you're good at managing your time and studying.
The hw is a lot and doesn't always follow a consistent schedule esp if you include the lab assignments. I also found her lecture style a little annoying sometimes. BUT you can tell she cares a lot about her students and about chem and she makes the content very digestible and sets up the class for you to pass and do well on the exams.
I would highly recommend her. She's a great professor, and the mock exams are very similar to the actual exams. She gives a lot of homework, but it gives you a strong foundation and base for the future.
Doc Mac was pretty good considering I had not taken Chemistry since my junior year of high school and had a weak foundation starting out. I failed a couple tests and still passed the class and would have almost gotten a B if it weren't for the final... (DONT COUNT ON IT!!). Be prepared to dedicate your life to this class
The class was taught reverse style where lectures were watched online and practice problems were done in class- which was actually very helpful because you could re-watch the video online if you were confused. Doc Mac is super helpful in answering any questions, homework or lecture related. Would definitely take again!
I would highly recommend Doc Mac. I do well with the flipped-style classroom, but if you don't, that's the only case where I wouldn't recommend her. She is organized, provides helpful mock exams, puts in test grades the same day, & is extremely helpful if you stop by her office hours with a question. Also really funny and wants students to succeed.
As someone who didn't understand anything in high school chem, Doc Mac was amazing. Flipped classroom where you watch lectures beforehand and do problems in class w explanations. Quick with grading and gives mock exams to study for each exam. However, this class requires A LOT of work with lectures, aleks, labs, and studying for exams.
McCartney is a good prof, the hardest part of this class is the lab. It counts for 25% of your grade and the work and grading is questionable. The class itself is not that hard, go to her lectures, do the polling and hw. Always do her exam reviews and practice questions, they're essentially 1 for 1 her exams. This is not a memorization class.
Dr. McCartney is an excellent professor. I spent 10+ hours a week outside of class doing homework, but it's purposeful and prepared me for OChem. Final: she uses questions on topics that weren't on the test or heavily missed questions. Don't study tests, study notes to see what's missing. Final is hard so she can spread out the grade distributions.
Lecture videos really helped, would take notes before going to class and spent class time to focus on clicker questions. She's pretty tough on due dates but gives partial credit on tests if you show your work. All in all, she explains REALLY well and knows what she's doing. If you put in the time and effort it's possible to get a good grade.
Dr. McCartney is very well versed in Chemistry and explained things well. There is a lot of homework but if you do it all you will do well in the class. The practice exams she gave out before the tests were almost identical to the real tests so make sure to do them.
Treats students like 6th graders, and lots of homework. Explains topics well, but it is a reverse lecture so not as much is explained in lecture. Tests are mildly difficult, and the mock exams do not help very much. Tons of I-clicker questions. If you are good at chemistry do not take McCartney.
Class is flipped lecture, meaning you will have a lot of videos to watch outside of class on top of the loads of homework she assigns. The mock exams and practice problems are not at all similar to the very difficult exams. Her office hours are helpful and she is a very kind person! However, I would not recommend her if you want a good grade.
She leads the chem department by it's balls. Amazing prof, easy tests and hw, put the work in!
Puts extremely tortured questions on tests and the mock exams do not represent the test difficulty. Also uses reverse classroom teaching, so if that doesn't work for you then do not take McCartney. She also sends 10-15 emails each week and it's kind of annoying. Talks down to students like they are 3rd graders.
Horrendous teacher, producing test averages in the low 70's and saying "that's good!". The whole point of being a teacher is to TEACH the students. She teaches in a "flipped-classroom" style, so if you are not willing to spend hours each week watching lecture videos on your own, don't take her. She only does practice problems in actual class.
Doc Mac gives fair tests and really works to set you up for success. It is a flipped classroom so, there is a lot to do outside of class with videos, canvas participation questions, and aleks homework due most days of the week. It can be a lot to manage but if you keep up with the work you will be very prepared for the tests. Definitely recommend!
Never left a rating, but for this prof I had to. I strongly advise to not listen to the 2 comments below. She does not care test avgs r Cs/failing. Many studious ppl still have had huge problems with unfair tests that are NOTHING like the practice, clicker qs& test review. Please do not take her. Trust me. Other profs will curve & help you out
The worst professor I have had so far. Not a bad teacher, but has the worst tests that are nothing like the mocks. Chemistry is my best subject and I knew 95% of the material before taking this class and am expecting a B. Adds problems to every test that we had never seen anything like before
McCartney has given incredibly difficult tests this semester in this class. She does not care about grade averages because the majority of them are failing! I dedicate my life to this class and still do not do well on the tests because she always makes the questions about things that weren't covered in class! Good for 119 do NOT TAKE HER FOR 120
If not for the tests this would be an average professor, but Dr. Mac creates the worst tests test I've taken in college. I am very good at chemistry, and these tests will likely make me receive a B in the class. Easy Iclicker questions and unhelpful mock exams are extremely misleading come test time. Every question is formed like a trick question.
I think she cares about her students but also doesn't. No curves on any tests so far, with averages in the low 70s, and little help from pre-test review material. I would not suggest taking her at all costs. Also outside of the learning aspect, she's really annoying in class.
She was my favorite prof when I took 119, now for 120, she's my least favorite. if you're and average test taker (72-73 range) then YOU WILL NOT GET AN A, maybe a borderline B. If you get all all 600 points for homework/lab/final/iclicker with said averages, there is no physical way for a A. AWFUL TESTS. Couldn't finish in extra time
Doc Mac skipped class for two weeks following spring break. Her tests are difficult and she refuses to curve. She treats us like toddlers and her class is as if she is beating us in the head with a stick. She believes that poor exam grades are at the fault of students while the reality is that we are not given the adequate tools to prepare.
I barely got an A in this class and that definitely wasn't because of McCartney. Flipped classroom so she doesnt teach in class. She takes an hour in class to get through 2-4 practice questions. Exams are nothing like the mock exams. No curve, no extra credit, not understanding, horrible class averages. Great for 119 not for 120.TAKE ANYONE ELSE.
Great at math concepts, HORRIBLE at conceptual; there is virtually no practice beforehand and you get whammed going into the exam. either very passive-aggressive and will treat you like a baby. Prides herself on her failing averages, and videos from her flipped lecture style don't reflect criticism received in the past. Take someone else if able.
Content heavy class. Canvas quizzes 3 times a week and homework due twice a week. Lecture exams are super difficult and hard to finish within the given class time. Try to stay on top of the modules or you will fall behind. good luck.
She simply does not care about her students. It does not matter how much or how long you study for an exam, you will will rarely make an A. Material on test DOES NOT match exam material. She makes jokes when the averages are failing. This is just another paycheck to her. She will take away your love for chemistry and drain you. TAKE ANYONE ELSE!
Tests are nothing like the lecture, I've asked her multiple times on how to study for her exams and all I got was "life is hard" and further false sympathy. The most recent test average was 63.4 and only 1 student out of 600+ made a 100. I have a 4.0 in all other classes and Dr. McCartney's Chem 120 is not a weed-out class it's a drop-out class.
The exams are nothing like any problem you work. When Q drop came around, I had a 77 in the class and planned on Q dropping. I expressed my concern, and she insisted I keep the class. She told me I would do well on the 4th exam. Everyone failed it. The class average was a 63%. My chances at a B were long gone. I wish I Q dropped. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Take her for 119 if you can, she's good at teaching that. Do NOT take her for 120. Mock exams and lecture practice problems do not reflect the difficulty of exams. She puts the most horrendous conceptual topics on exams which are usually never covered in class. Prides herself on low exam averages and being sassy/having an attitude toward students.
I was excited to have Doc Mac for 120, but I was met with a condescending attitude, constant quizzes and miscalculations on her part, and a complete lack of cooperation with students. Once, she sent spongebob memes in response to the majority of the class failing an exam. This class didn't teach chemistry, it taught me patience (it is running thin)
the aleks homework is horrendous. Learning the material is not bad and you'll understand it but the tests have mad curveballs to them, especially conceptual stuff. Every test average is lower than the previous so don't bank on the 4th or final to save ur grade.
She will always put something on the test that you have no way of studying for even if you've done every single review material given and attended every lecture. It really feels like she wants her students to fail, as she seems completely unconcerned with alarming results and always meets students seeking help with unwarranted and rude sarcasm.
Dr. McCartney makes you watch pre-recorded lecture topic videos and simply goes over practice problems during class. I don't mind this, but the actual classes become boring sometimes. The first three exams before the final were okay, but the fourth one destroyed everyone because many of the problems were the types that no one had ever seen before.
Doc Mac treats students like 6th graders. mock exams, iclicker, canvas questions, and aleks are NOTHING like the real exam. focuses only math problems when exams are 50% conceptual that no one knows. she does not prepare you well for exams, and does not care about failing or barely passing exam averages. take any other professor for 120
McCartney is the only Chem-120 professor who did not give any sort of curve or extra credit, for the course despite having mediocre and failing averages. And worst of all she didn't even care about the fact that despite the vast majority of a class of 600+ having horrible scores maybe she could give some sort of aid. Take anyone else if possible.
Her flipped lecture works in theory but in practice her classes end up completing around 3-4 questions in the entire hour. This seemed like a huge waste of time while the online videos took up a lot of time. The test always had a questions that were formatted in a way that was never presented in practice before which was frustrating.
Doo Doo. Barely clutched up on the exams after self studying for the math and then still lost points bc of horrendous conceptual questions we were never prepared for. Only reason she is still at a 3.8 on here is because of the loads of good chem 119 reviews. Horrendous for Chem 120. Avoid her. Good videos but useless practice in class.
I had Professor McCartney for Chem 119 and absolutely loved her, however, I took her again for Chem 120 and she completely changed. As a 4.0 student, I put so much effort into this class. The notes she taught us in class weren't the full information to be able to perform well on the exams. She was passive aggressive and talked down on her students.
I had Professor McCartney for chem 119 & 120. She was great for 119. She provided good resources for studying and a mock exam. However, I would not recommend taking this prof for 120. She did not teach the information we needed to pass her test. Her in-class questions did not prepare you for the exam whatsoever. Class averages on most test very bad
You can kiss your first semester 4.0 goodbye
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! This is by far the worst class I have taken, you think you know the material but that doesn't mean you will get a good grade. The class is deceptively easy. All of the participation problems, homework, and material is relatively easy and understandable. However, all that goes out the window when it comes to the exams.
If there is one thing about me, it is that I love chemistry. This class made me hate chemistry. I soon came to realize that my problem was the professor. She doesn't teach. She makes you do everything outside of class. Most exams do NOT match problems we do in class. Half of her class is failing. Do NOT take her! You will regret it.
I have never worked so hard to make an A in my life. Exams are incredibly difficult. Somewhat caring prof (in my personal experience) but condescending toward other students. Probably not my first choice but if you work harder than 99% of your classmates you can make an A.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR CHEM 120. Her exams were very difficult for no reason at all and always included questions that we have never seen before. The class averages for the exams were always low and were all free response. It takes a lot of effort and struggle to try and make an A in her class. God be with y'all if you guys take her.
Don't take her. Cried coming out of almost EVERY test. Makes you question if you even want to continue in pre-med. There's difficult classes and there's classes like hers where spending 7 hours everyday on chem isn't even enough to make an A. Just when you think there's hope after that 3rd test, THERE ISN'T, she will humble you with the tests after
Pretty straightforward class. Tests were comparatively harder than 119, but if you put in the work outside of class, the results come. ALEKS sucks so get started before the due date. Doc Mac is a fantastic professor, but she often stops class when there's extra talking (in a room of 500+ students). Practice problems during lectures go super slow.
If you are an incoming freshman, taking 119. TAKE MCCARTNEY. She is a very good professor for 119. I thought that would transfer over to 120. I was WRONG. With unbearable tests, her class was HORRIBLE. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
I think she changed how she writes her tests this semester because all of the good reviews are old. I Q-dropped because I knew her class was going to be hell, but I came back to say DON'T TAKE HER. It doesn't matter who you are, you will lose your precious 4.0
Doc Mac's lectures are amazing - clear and easy to understand, even with heavy content. I always looked forward to attending her classes and felt like I learned a lot. I would definitely recommend her. I would consider a different instructor if you do not enjoy a highly enthusiastic and energetic teaching style. 8/10
She is a very good professor. She is clear and concise with the work that needs to be done to get an A in the class. BUT she is very sassy and has a ton of attitude, and is sometimes mean/rude. Other than her attitude if you need a good prof for Gen chem just take her.
The lecture videos and in class practice are actually not bad, you'll learn alot and understand the material, however her attitude and demeanor is condescending and just weird. Her tests just have tons of curveballs and are graded inconsistently. The midterms will get progressively harder.
She does flipped lecture which is a little annoying, but otherwise it was convenient being able to watch the videos again if needed. She does clicker problems everyday, so you have to show up for those points. Her tests are a little hard but she provides a good amount of practice problems, those are your best friends for the test. Take her!!!
professors should be caring and understanding and actually teach. she doesnt fall under any of those categories. seems like she just wants to get in & out of class, make her money, and go home. exams were ridiculously hard for no reason & the aleks hw was insufferable. so glad this class is over & done with because i could not deal w it any longer
Pretty good in 119 and gets you a solid understanding of chemistry there, but then baits you into taking her 120 class where she just makes the tests conceptually hard on top of the immense amount of math you need to know how to do. In addition to lab and the aleks hw, this class is gonna make you have no time to do anything out of school
Came and listened to every lecture, spent >15 hrs a wk on this class, studied for hours, and hated Doc Mac's attitude and treatment of her students the entire semester. Spent most of the sem. at an 85-89, finished with an A and a broad understanding of all concepts. Watch the lecture vids before class - she uses the class to do 3-5 problems.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR CHEM 120! Thought she was pretty good for 119 so I took 120 with her. Huge mistake. She turned into a completely different person treating us like we were in grade school, then went on vacation for 2 weeks at the end of the semester. The exams are 50% conceptual, nothing like the mock exams, practice questions or homework.
Good Chem 119 class, if you work well with a very structured class you'll be fine. Consistent, regular due dates for everything and a schedule set way ahead of time. I liked the flipped class design bc I could understand everything before class and then just practice in class. Not much ec, but very fair grading and lots of room to get points.
Got a little more moody and was out of class a bit more from 119, but still kept it pretty fair. 120 is simply harder than 119 which is probably what people are upset over combined with her absences, but she actually gave extra credit this time. Study harder than you did in 119 and you'll be fine. Lab is harder too so be ready for practical.
A compassionate and effective professor. Great lectures and was available and fantastic for feedback. Makes class the right amount of difficult but never painful. She gives you everything needed but expects you to do the work required. Homework is heavy, iclicker is essential, and studying before class will become more necessary as course goes on.
Had her for a summer course. She did very well with the smaller lecture size. Don't know if her style would translate well for a large lecture.
Truth be told, until recently, I would have given this professor a 3.5, however, this professor does have her moments. The class is homework and test-heavy, tests are hard but exactly like the mock exams. However, she does have a big personality. I lost trust in her judgment since she is mostly stubborn and she can be rude and inconsiderate.
Doc Mac is an amazing professor, knows what she is doing, she is kind and gives excellent feedback. Go to her office hours for any questions and she will walk you through any issues you have in your homework, lab or any questions about lecture. She is really funny too! Her memes made my day. She is an AMAZING prof, please take her class.
Took Prof. McCartney's class - it's challenging, but the in-class practice and unstuckstudy ai were super helpful for exam prep. Definitely attend lectures and use all resources.
