Mullen takes an extraordinarily boring class (Research ) and makes it survivable because she is so silly and funny.
Great professor! Makes research methods interesting. Very helpful. Very clear expecations.
A great, entertaining prof. She is fair and is great for providing the class with extra-curric. opportunities, and keeps a very well organized virtual campus.
Great prof. Clear and cares about students. Offers lots of opportunities to get involved with extra-curricular learning with MPs. Enjoyed the class. Style was interesting and compelling. Take a class with her if you get the chance.
she was amazing!!! she was always there if you needed help or any clarification on anything. she was sooo helpful!! shes funi and she is so down to earth. one of the best profs ever! will take her classes again anytime. at first i hated STATS but she made it fun and easy to understand. loved her!!
Stephanie is a great professor! The practical applications included Tours of the Senate with staff that had studied under her. she has a double doctorate and a sincere interest in her students. Work hard, do well
She makes a boring topic interesting, but she rambles a bit. She's also an easy prof but just be sure to check your grades along the way. She's ok with the midterm, but she could prepare tests with better questions to be honest. All in all, she's a pleasant prof and a nice lady for sure, and she does well with the topic she has to work with.
Amazing prof! Makes a boring subject fun and keeps everything straight forward and doesn't needlessly complicate things like other profs. She has great fashion sense too! Wish uOttawa had more like her.
Fantastic Prof. very helpful and a pleasure to attend her classes. She is very down to earth and is a real students professor. Look forward to taking more of her classes in the future.
She's a very good prof and really an easy A. Her midterm and finals were almost ridiculously easy. Very nice lady who gives decent lectures which can be a bit dull... But that's mostly because of the course. She was very keen and helpful to assist people in finding jobs at Parliament. Would recommend her.
She is a nice woman, and a fairly easy marker. Lectures were extremely boring [I cannot stress this enough]. Similar to high school history teachers, she has managed to take a potentially interesting topic and make it extremely dull. The lectures and the textbook are packed with unnecessary details; it can be hard to see the forest for the trees.
First of all, dont buy the textbook unless you enjoy wasting 50 dollars. Stephanie Mullen is the kindest, easiest and funniest prof I have ever had. If you like laughing and getting an A+ for doing nothing take her class.
GREAT PROF, no interest in research before. Clear expectations. Fun, very helpful. You can really excel in her class.
Very helpful!
You need an A+, take a course with Stephanie. She turns research methods into a game.
Very dry class but if you go to every class and listen, you are gold for the midterm and final. She will actually tell you what is on the exam and the three ways that she might ask a question. Easy A.
Stephanie Mullen is a very helpful prof and not only does she help you on an academic level but she prepares you for the outside world and gives you tips on how to score jobs and built up your CV. Of all my 3 years in University, she is my best prof.
Amazing professor. She is so committed, very helpful, and genuinly loves what she does and puts all her effort into it. There are no surprises on the exam, she makes sure that you understand the material very well and she is always available to meet up even out of school to fit in everyone's schedule. SHE IS THE BEST!!
Made research methods bearable - this course is probably one of the easiest to get an A+ in. Had the option to do volunteer work instead of labs too. She'll always end class a good half an hour early, but always available for help and clarification when you need it.
Stephanie Mullen is a nice lady with good intentions but doesn't stay on topic. I found a lot times it was hard to follow and listen to lectures when things were irrelavant. She tries to be helpful but it is better to teach the material and not have long class discussions about nothing important....
she's a very good teacher.
best prof i've had so far. she's hilarious and you are guaranteed a great mark if you put in a little effort. she wants you to excel and even more, she wants you to enjoy her class. she treats us like adults and never wastes our time. she never drags out lectures and her exam was exactly what she told us to expect. she's pretty cool as a person too
Memorize the slides and do the assignments. The tests are literally: list this and maybe give an example, but it is right off the slides. If you do this you should get an A.
Generally a nice professor, however, the midterm and final appear extremely easy but she is looking for really specific answers. Pro's are she lets you out early and you can actually apply what you learn in lecture with workshops however I found this class extremely BORING. Probably, wouldn't take another class with her. Don't Buy the Textbook!
An extremely easy class. Everything she says comes off the slides, so there's no need to attend class. The midterms are common sense and easy. The prof is very approachable and helpful, although she will tell you you need the textbook, but you don't. I got an A without ever buying it. The hardest thing about the class was the take home exam.
Very helpful and understanding class. She's fairly easy to get a hold of and will answer questions really well via e-mail. If you're shy this isn't a class for you as there is a lot of discussion. I had a lot of fun. I would take another class with her in a second!
Awesome prof! A very caring professor who really does want you to succeed in the class. There were lots of terms to know but she made great slides which compliment the readings nicely. People say you don't need the book but I have to disagree, it really did help out to clarify a few key points. If I ever had the chance to have her again, I would!
Great prof! Really funny! Takes a class like research methods (which is pretty boring) and makes it into a class I didn't want to miss. I would recommend her to anyone taking research methods!
Great Prof, makes the class fun. She is very helpful and really wants her students to understand the material. Attend all lectures/complete labs. Don't buy the text. Study all her slides along with your own lecture notes taken during class. You should get a A+. However, there is no such thing as a free lunch, you must study, but it's easy:)
She is such a nice professor, strongly student oriented, although not the hardest of markers, so self learning sometimes is necessary, however don't get complacent as the exams are not always easy
Fairly straight forward class, but do not be fooled by the ease of the content as the mid-terms can be a little tricky. Spend some time studying for them and you should get a good mark.
Mullen is an angel: she means extremely well to her students, but sometimes goes off on tangents that are completely irrelevant to the class, dragging it out. The material is pretty straightforward and easy, comes right off of the slides, except attendance is mandatory for labs. Easy marker: gives half and part marks for blatantly wrong answers.
This teacher is very nice. Her lectures are very easy and for a 3 hours class it goes by so quick. Her exams are super easy you dont really need the book because the power point and the lectures has it all !! shes one of the best teacher i ever had in my life and i would take her again
Her lectures are hilarious and she is a nice person. Her emails are not that helpful so just talk to her after class when you have questions.
Steph is a very cute person! She's a helpful prof who clearly loves what she teaches. I wasn't excited for the course by any means, but she did find a way to actually make it sort of fun. She was always there for me when I needed her help with anything, and was very sweet to boot. Highly recommend taking her class-- you won't regret it!
Qualitative methods is pretty straight forward. Mullen is an easy prof and as long as you go to class and study decently then there should be no problem getting an A in the class. Very nice and helpful as well.
yeah, she's a hilarious little bundle of joy - but sometimes I feel the class is too easy and passive (yes I understand how that sounds). The material is very mundane, and I felt like I didn't really grasp on to anything, given the free spirited nature of the class and how it's always cut short. I wish it were a bit more direct and serious.
If you really are not looking to be bored to death by Research courses, Stephanie will make your life incredible during the time she teaches. She is kind, and really promotes a space of learning and interest amongst difficult concepts and long readings. Buy the book, and read! She looks for details in all that she marks!
Very kind prof who wants to see you do well and succeed. She strives to make sure you understand the course material. Not always the most organized, but the class was extremely interesting. Her emails are not always the best, so just talk to her after class. She is always happy to go over a grade again with you in person to explain your mark.
Hilarious, sweet, and intelligent, fair grader and had interesting guest speakers. Changed my view of political science.
Love Steph. Her classes are great, she doesn't try and kill you with work and is very understanding. Definitely would take her class again
Extremely kind and lovely woman, who is always there to help. There were some issues with cancelled classes, especially because it was one 3 hour per week, but this professor genuinely cares about her students and is a wonderful person.
Great prof, but course isn't as easy as I would have thought. You still have to show up and study. Would take the prof again.
This teacher is simply amazing I took POL 2156 with her and than POL3116 she is so kind whenever you go see her. One of the nicest teacher I've had. She's not a tough grader at all. The points you get for showing up are so easy to get she always gives ppl the full grade as long as you show up. She always tries to keep the lectures funny !
Lectures are often boring - I always caught myself doing other things. You can pass the class as long as you read the textbook and study her PowerPoint. If memorization is your strong suit, midterms and exams were fairly easy.
Very funny and adorable. She makes a dry concept like stats fun and interesting by demonstrating its real applications in politics. She will provide all practice questions and readings necessary to succeed. She's very approachable too. The assignments are weighted fairly. Make sure to do the practice questions, and you'll be fine.
Professor Mullen is a very sweet lady. She's very upbeat and optimistic. The course content is kind of boring but she made the class be not so bad. She cares about her students and wants you to do good. She adds in a lot of personal experiences in her lectures which ease up the workload and help you understand. The midterm and labs aren't too hard.
Professor Mullen is a great professor. She makes a boring class like Research Methods very interesting. She is funny. Midterms and Labs are easy if you study and buy the text book and read it! Only flaw is she talks a lot about political examples and being a social science student it sometimes doesn't make sense. 10/10 professor tho!
I really enjoyed this professor. She made something that I'm not interested in enjoyable to learn. She's funny and caring and really down to earth. Her class was also easy (but only because she is a good prof). If I see her teaching another POL class, I'll be sure to take it.
Amazing prof! She's funny, down to earth and really helps her students. She made lectures really interesting. Midterms are easy - make sure you read the text well though. Labs are super simple.
One of the funniest and quirkiest professors at uOttawa! If you find the Methodology classes boring, she's the only one able to bring it alive. Read the textbook, show up to Labs, and you'll do well.
I've been a student at the University of Ottawa for over 5 years now and I can honestly say that professor Mullen is the kindest, most caring and understanding professors I have ever had. Truly an A+ professor and overall human being!
Genuinely wants students to succeed and ensures she does all she can to make it happen. Thank you professor Mullen!
Great prof and very kind + funny
She was terrific. This was the class I dreaded the most and yet it was my best class! Prof. Mullen knows this is an intro course and not everybody loves the material and makes an effort to get you through it as painlessly as possible. 5 Stars!
Steph is kind, humble, understand and extremely nice - I recommend her to any and all students.
Steph is amazing! Kind, understanding and care SO much about her students. 110% recommend her.
Great prof, she is a fun lecturer and will tell you exactly how to succeed in her class.
10000% Recommend Steph! Her grading criteria is clear and its easy to do well in her class. The textbook is your BFF. We had 5 labs which were graded if we sent them in, 2 midterms and the final (each worth 30%). She tells you what she's looking for and its easy to depict what questions she will ask (she gets them from the book chapters).
One of my favourite professors! She's a breath of fresh air in the political science department because she teaches us practical skills that can be transferred to a future job. The course isn't loaded with theory (woohoo). She's a super fair grader, and tells you everything you need to know for the exams. No essays, just 5 short labs and 3 exams.
She's one of the sweetest teachers I've had. If you put in a decent effort, you'll get an A. Plus, she's extremely knowledgeable about qualitative and quantitative research, and is always willing talk to you outside of class about how her classes will help you in the workforce.
She's awesome. She will basically give you the midterms and exam questions and tells you exactly how to get the points necessary. She's a no bs kind of prof and truly cares about her students. You learn a lot for very little effort.
CHILL PROF. LOTS OF MATERIAL TO READ FOR EXAMS BUT SHE GIVES ALL QUESTIONS IN ADVANCE. DO READINGS AND U WILL BE FINE. LABS SO EASY.. WISH MIDTERMS WEIGHED LESS THO. FUNNY PROF BUT OFTEN OFF TTOPIC. STILL HIALIOUS THO. BORING CLASS BUT NOT HER FAULT, SHE MADE IT BEARABLE IF ANYTHING
She gets a pretty good rep because her class is relatively easy, but her teaching style is not ideal. The amount of times she says "I digress" is hilarious. The textbook for the class is super good, read it and you'll be good. Going to class isn't too relevant. She is really willing to help, and is very kind.
Really sweet lady, she's passionate about research and is really just loving life. always making jokes and isn't afraid to poke fun at herself. Super super easy to do well in her class. Choose the labs over the CSL placement, took 5 mins and I got 100% each time). Sometimes she meanders which makes it hard to concentrate on taking notes.
Amazing prof! 10/10 recommend and I will definitely be taking one of her classes again. ADORE HER. She really just wants you to do well.
honestly just do the CSL and study partially for the midterm and you'll be fine. Despite my attendance at every lecture, I suggest just to look over the powerpoints as her lectures just skip through everything.
Easy course, always ends class early. Powerpoint mostly covers the lectures, labs are easy, she's a generous grader.
Stephanie is my absolute favourite Prof at uO. She's always willing to ensure her students succeed. I've taken a few classes with her now and have enrolled in a few more for my final year. She is super straight forward with what to expect on assignments and exams. Any class with Steph is a must take!!
She's amazing. 25% of the class is either a placement or 5 dinky little labs that take about 10 mins. Enjoyable lectures, interesting textbook. She's easy-going and just a gem to the university. Watch your spelling, though; it's a 15% deduction if you get simple words wrong.
I dropped Research Methods the first go 'round because of a horrible professor who almost made me drop poli sci. But Professor Mullen saved me and while I can't say I love research methods, she makes it interesting and engaging, and actually gives you chances to do some more hands on learning through labs and exercises.
Great prof! Makes research worth it and it's fun to talk to her during class, everything was pretty casual. Midterm was fair. While I didn't attend some lectures because they're heavily based on the textbook, they're worth going to for (1) prof (2) the labs (they're super easy because you can do them in class with the prof). 100% recommend the prof
In my opinion, Professor Mullen is the best professor at the University of Ottawa. She made a class I was so stressed about enjoyable and I ended up feeling like I learned a lot. You have multiple chances to keep your grades up, and she really cares about her students.
Prof. Mullen was really cool. She made classes collaborative and fun, but you didn't need to go to understand the material. You can also get by without buying the textbook, but it definitely helps with examinations. She grades a bunch of small labs and research assignments, which are very easy to do well on. Definitely a great professor to have.
One of the nicest profs out there. Her goal is to get the information across to the students but without damaging their gpa. Her assignments are made very easy. Make sure to review the lecture notes before the midterm and exam and you'll do well.
Literally the easiest and most caring profs ur gonna have. Want an easy A? take Mullen. Ive taken 2 classes with her and I would say the hardest things are the midterms but even then they're a blessing. she's super chill and has super cute cats
Mullen got me through what I thought was going to be my all-time worst class. She breaks down all the equations to the point you understand, is always willing to help with questions and go over practice questions, has tests that perfectly reflect the notes, and helps you a ton with the labs. Understood the pressure of the pandemic. Love her!
Lectures sort of drag on but is a really good and easy marker. Would take her any day.
I've taken three classes with Professor Mullen, and I am more thankful for her every time. She genuinely cares about her students and wants you to succeed. She's accessible for questions and feedback, and makes courses where you learn but recognizes that the best learning will come once you're in the work force and wants to prepare you for that.
Professor Mullen is an absolute gem. Her POL2156 class is very straightforward so long as you understand the material in the textbook. A couple of multiple-choice exams which aren't super difficult and some weekly work which is honestly very simple. Would definitely take a class with her again. Couldn't recommend her more!
Attendance is not mandatory to get a good mark but mandatory for an easy A. The prof basically gave us all of the answers to the labs and both the midterm and final exam were multiple choice and open book. Easiest class I have taken at uni and the prof genuinely cares about her students. Join her lectures for free cat content and Starbucks recipes
I have never done a rate my prof, but Stephanie deserves one. Her mindset towards uni/teaching is so amazing - she honestly does not want to make your life harder but wants you to learn. She makes classes that seem very scary and mundane exciting and fun - she is the nicest prof you will ever have. Stephanie is the best!
Very unclear grading criteria in all assignments. Lectures were just discussions that brought nothing to the table. I learned less than nothing from the actual prof. Her class was 90% readings which she did not elaborate on. Treats her undergraduate students like graduate students. I expected a lot from this class but was fully disappointed.
Fun class to take in the Summer. Hint: Assignments build on one another and the final paper so pick a good topic at the beginning of the course!!! Prof cares about us in the real world and suggests stuff to put on your resume that we did in the course. Got a reference letter to!!!!!
Prof. Mullen is by far the most caring profs I've met. She is super approachable and flexible as long as you communicate with her. She is kinda bad at answering emails but just go up to her before or after class, she's great to chat to. She explains the course material well and assignments are very clear and straightforward. An overall angel
Such a sweet and funny prof! Her passion made an otherwise boring course doable. Neither attendance nor book are 100% necessary but I'd do one or the other at least. The digital textbook is great! Mullen is very clear on what u need to know and made her course accessible online after lockdown which I appreciate! Great prof.
love her she is friendly. just hand in everything on time. read the textbook. most important.
no need to go to class, the textbook has all you need to succeed. otherwise, prof. mullen is hilarious during her lectures
Really nice prof who did her best to make political research interesting and practical. She was a tad disorganized and sometimes went on little tangents (but never kept us for the full three hours). Overall she made a really dull topic bearable and had a very clear grading scheme. I'd definitely recommend taking her classes if you have the chance!
literally one of the nicest profs at uottawa. expectations for assignments and exams are straightforward. she's also engaging and makes a boring class entertaining. take her for an easy A!!!
If you want a easy course, take her. 50% of the final grade was made up of labs each week, and they were very straight to the point, and she guided us with clear instructions and had certain class dates for "make ups" to complete our labs we missed. She even gives us a chance to resubmit them if we didn't get 5/5, Class never goes to 3 hours.
Very easy. Instant grading. So caring and fun and cool. Chill, fun class.
she is such a nice prof, really understanding and flexible. she grades suuuuper easy and was always available to answer questions. would recommend!
Prof. Mullen's course structure is super easy; you are almost guaranteed to get 100% of 50% of the class through her labs. But Professor Mullen doesn't teach so much as read aloud, the lectures became useless to me after a certain point, and attendance numbers dwindled greatly as others found the same. If you want an easy grade, take the prof.
If you want an a+ stay with Mullen. She is funny, and yes she talks a lot but she cares about students and she prepare students for real life. If you get the chance take the community learning service instead of the final exam, and the book is free online. As well she is really flexible. So far one of the best university teacher.
Bad attitude. Never answers emails. The class was easy enough. If you ever need to email her, good luck. She isn't awful if you have no other options, but if you do, take them.
Do not take her. She refuses to record lectures, doesn't reply to emails ever and having an 60 multiple choice exam be 60% of the final grade is kind of insane but yeah. Take her if there is no choice but don't bother if you don't have to.
BEST PROF AT UOTTAWA! She is a bit of a yapper but she makes the class easy to understand and is an easy marker. very accessible after class. She replies quickly, usually within a couple of hours. I would highly recommend for students looking to have an easy class. P.S. The Midterm essay questions are normally the discussion questions
I think she saw her ratings were good and didn't like that. She was known for being forgiving, caring etc. well she changed 180° One minute late assignment? Only when you defer it through faculty. Wrong submission? Won't warn you until it's too late I.e already gave you an F. No mercy, you follow to the min and T, not to mention 60% mc exams, Lazy?
The small assignments were very great at grade boosting and she lets you resubmit until you get 100%. The midterm and final were all multiple choice so beware of that but the questions were pretty straight forwards. Overall it was a pretty easy class that didn't require a lot of time commitment.
She's a kind person, but this was the most disorganized class I've ever taken. Expectations were unclear, materials were late, and the course lacked structure. Don't forget you (or parents) pay a lot for this... If you want actually to learn and not just coast through, this isn't the class for you. Being nice doesn't equal being a good teacher.
very kind and caring professor. assignments aren't difficult and she will help you through the work if ever you need
Awful. She rambles on in her lectures. Unclear assignment instructions. Condescending. Will not answer your emails. Never provides grading rubrics. If you can take this course with anyone else, do it.
Nicest prof ever. Said 'if this class causes you too much stress then I am doing something wrong'. That speaks for itself. Her lectures are also super entertaining. She wants every student to succeed.
No idea how she has positive reviews. Assignment instructions are unclear. Syllabus is empty. She will NEVER answer emails. The class was extremely easy, by intention, but that doesn't take away the fact she is not a good professor. She rambles in lectures (not recorded) and will mention things for the tests you will miss if you do not attend.
very nice professor who puts students first. that being said, this is not always a good thing. i learned nothing in this course due to a lack of rigour. quizzes were open-book, the assignments were very easy, and i received nothing less than 100% on them. i learned nothing and got an A+. not the right professor if you want to be challenged.
Caring professor with a clear, easy-to-follow teaching style. Expectations are straightforward. CSL placement is 30% and earned by completing hours, so doing the work secures most of your grade. Final is 30% with a double-sided cheat sheet, and MCQs come from the 2 quizzes. She could respond to emails more often, but the TA usually does.
Best prof. Super easy and understanding. We had our final exam, which we had a cheat sheet for, and it was the EXACT questions we had on our two quizzes. Take pictures of quiz answers when you finish them, then put them on your cheat sheet for the exam. If there are any bad reviews on this prof, I promise you, they're the problem, not her.
Someone criticized this professor, claiming the course lacked challenge and offered little learning. While not overly demanding, saying you can't learn reflects your approach, not the instructor. Engage actively, read critically, and dissect the material independently. I learned a lot, did my readings, and applied myself outside the classroom.
