She has a nice personality, her quizzes are extremely reading oriented. Grading for speeches seem to hinge on her option.
She is a great professor who will go out of her way to help any student who comes to her office. She makes class lectures fun and interesting. She gives clear guidelines for assignments and has reasonable expectations. Her only downside is that she is somewhat slow on returning assigments.
The quizes and tests are not bad, and very based on the reading and lectures. Not very consistent with the grading on the speeches. She seems unorganized at times so make sure you keep track of all of your grades in cases she loses one (happened to me).
Stephanie is a nice woman and the tests are fine if you read the book. She always had helpful insight and assignments. Fun activities to do that helped you overcome stagefright. A bit letter of the law though.
Stephanie is awesome! She really helped me tons! Shes always insightful, and so kind.
She is very nice. The class was actually interesting to me. Most of the concepts covered are commom sense. All in all, it's a fun class.
very upbeat. almost TOO upbeat at times. :o) but overall a fun class... very helpful professor.
maybe she has changed since everyone else posted evals, bc she is one of the worst professors I have had. She would be a great elementary school teacher with all her "hokie" activities. she is definately not college professor material. if you are dreading taking speech class she is not the teacher for you.
BORING>>>>>>TREATS US LIKE WE ARE 2.......HER JOURNALS SUCK
do not take this class if you expect to really learn anything from it...the concepts she teaches are all common sense. in addition, she is very picky about specifics on presentations and assignments.
I loved Stephanie! She made the task of public speaking easy and enjoyable. She seemed to enjoy teaching and being with her students. Overall a fun and interesting class!
goo dteacher overall, friendly, was able to help soften the blow of doing speeches in front of people.
Stephanie Rocks
wonderful teacher! eased the stress of giving speeches! easy quizzes/exams - don't need the text book - just go to class. its a nice break from other tough classes!
Didn't really enjoy this teacher. Not bad, but class is very boring. Not terribly difficult or easy. There are much better speech teachers out there, I'd much rather recommend one of them over Stephanie.
Took over interim. She was alright. Quizzes/Exams were fairly easy. Speeches were graded kind of hard. She makes speaking in front of class easier. Very nice person.
this is a simple 111 class, and she makes it easy. she is a very fair professor, and the workload is alright and she makes it easier for us in our speaches by easing the tensity. she is a great professor, and I do recomend her.
quizzes were ok if you paid attention in class, and she graded speeches kinda hard, but not terrible. Id recommend her
Not a very good teacher. Cannot speak well herself so Im not sure how she can teach communication. Very politically correct, almost too much. Dont recommend her.
I think Stephanie is a great professor! She is more than willing to go out of her way to help you when you ask for it. I really enjoyed taking this class with her, she's not intimidating and gives you an encouraging smile when you know you messed up during a speech. I highly recommend her. The tests & quizzes are fairly easy if you pay attention.
Super nice lady. Very passionate about the subject. Extremely happy all the time. Easy to get a hold of if you need help.
The tests are pretty hard and so are the quizzes but I think she's a pretty easy grader on speeches. She's ok, can be kind of mean sometimes. If you're good at tests but not speeches, take this class, but if you suck at tests and are good at speeches, don't.
Hard test and quizzes. If you read the textbook you should be fine. Pretty easy grader on speeches. DO NOT read a speech, practice days before your speech date.
Tests can be easy but she doesn't really know how to speak and can be tough grader on your speeches
The grading style of this professor is pretty ridiculous for the amount of credits gained. Horribly boring and a waste of time. Still don't understand the point!
She is awkward and stands weird and is a picky speech grader. Test/Quizzes ok just study the text.bland personality...
She was nice, but does grade hard. Test and quizzes are fairly hard as well and require some material from the textbook. But, if you go to class, take notes, and pay attention there is no doubt you will at least pass.
Easy to understand, concise (It's a speech class, after all). Tough grader, quizzes are difficult and she is a picky grader when it comes to performing your speech. I don't know what everyone else is talking about, means EXACTLY what she says and will grade you accordingly. If you pay attention and read D2L on each assignment you'll be fine.
I took her class over interim. Really nice and very approachable with questions or issues regarding assignments, etc. She is a tough grader though, and took points off my speech for things that I'd done in the speech, so I wasn't sure if she was paying attention...overall though, great professor!
Stephanie is a great teacher!!! She is great at explaining what she's looking for in a speech. Her tests are kind of difficult, but if you go to class every day and take notes, you should be fine. Great pick!!
Don't read the book. Quizzes and tests are easy if you study your notes. She tends to pick on a few kids all the time in the class (I was included in this and I would get picked to answer questions every single day while others were never picked on. I am a good student so I'm not sure what her problem was. Very unprofessional in that way.
As an interim, there's a lot of classwork to be done in a short period of time (Constantly working on more than one speech at a time.) Quizzes aren't too hard, mostly common sense. She's a really tough grader, though. She grades as if it's an upper level course, and takes points off for the tiniest, pickiest things. Wouldn't take her again.
Don't take her ever. Worst idea ever. The work load was like if it was a 3 level. Too much to do in interim. She would not get back to your e-mails for a long time. Miscommunication skills would say something then it would change. If you went to her about your speech she would destroy it and or would tell you what you were about to say.
A lot of class work for an interim class. Constantly working on more than 1 thing. Makes you feel like you're doing things right but then takes points off for things that you did in your speech. Would tell you that you can do your speech topic but then pick it apart when you turn in your outline. Very tough grader. Wouldn't take her again.
This was a D2L course. This instructor grades papers and discussions very slowly. Grades place too much emphasis on discussion. She is a tough grader. She had used templet from a previous version of the textbook that was no longer up to date, resulting in quiz and discussion errors. I will not take another course offered by her.
This was a D2L course, and I agree with all of the previous posters comments. Too much emphasis on disscussion. Terribly slow grader. Reacts to emails as if you are a bother to her. Never another course from her.
Very hard grader, I was glad to have my test scores to back my grade up. My speeches I thought were decent, but she ripped them to shreds. Fine.. I don't like public speaking but she did not make it any easier. She did give out tons of extra credit though, which was nice.
She rips apart your outline and grades your speeches pretty harsh. She also gives tests on reading from the book and disscussion in class. I did not enjoy the class and found it semi challenging.
I really liked her as a professor. Not my favorite, but not bad either. She does grade hard on your speeches, especially on your outlines, but I think it's pretty fair grading overall. Gives LOTS of opportunity for extra credit. Seems to like what she's teaching and quick responses to any questions I had. I would take her again.
This professor is VERY opinionated. Make sure you stay on her good side and attend lecture! Study notes daily because her quizzes/exams are tough..
Very very tough grader. She's really nice if you get on her good side and show up to class! She gets really upset if you skip, but my outlines were torn to pieces. Her class was the only thing that stood between me and a 4.0 by .1.
Preaches respect for the speaker, and her phone goes off during my final speech. I glared at her and she simply smiled at me. Outlines are pretty much impossible to get a passing grade. Exams were somewhat tough. Got a B but did not care for her
She is a very nice teacher but grades way to hard on speeches and outlines. Test and quizzes are straight from book and are utterly useless.
Stephanie is a good speech teacher. She doesn't give a lot of direction for speeches, and grades outlines hard but otherwise the class isn't too bad. Make sure to study for the quizzes and exams and you'll be fine.
Here's what gets me about Stephanie. She is a very nice person and a good teacher. BUT it doesn't seem fair that anyone would base a class grade on real pointless information that nobody cares about from a dry textbook. It seems like she is testing just for the sake of testing. Testing just to find ways to bring your grade down. Be real Stephanie!
She talks about people like they're another species. She doesn't have "pathos" as such she lectures.
One of my favorite teachers that I've ever had I highly recommend her and I am making sure that I have her again for Speach. Her papers are a breeze but her quizzes are stupid. Exams are easy, quizzes are stupid. Collectively, it is easy if you study up, but Rolain-Jacobs is there for you and she is maaaa gurrrrl. Take her.
She is a very nice and understanding woman. Her teaching style is both clear and engaging, and content is easy to understand. I hardly ever took notes or read the book, and I still rocked this class. Tests were simple, and essays were not that hard. She gave extra credit and is just overall an awesome teacher. It was very easy to do well with her
Stephanie is an ok professor Extremely hard grader and quizzes and papers are tough. Assigns pointless assignments. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY. Takes years to grade. Isn't the best but definitely not my favorite, thats for sure.
She's really nice, and I liked her as a person, but she's a really tough grader. I had her for Honors Speech (which really isn't much different than regular Speech) and it was my least favorite class of the semester. I usually like public speaking, but not in this class.
Did not like her as a person.
Stephanie is a hard grader when it comes to exams but the papers I personally did alright on. If you want to pass this class with a decent grade, I recommend studying at least 3 times a week. I didn't study for any of the quizzes and did AWFUL on them but the exams were B's. She is okay.
Average teacher but nice person. Really hard grader. Probably wouldn't take again
She is by the far the toughest grader for Public Speaking. She's very picky and even if you follow her grading rubric and have all the requirements, she will still come up with some excuse to deduct points!
This professor is a very tough grader, even if you follow the rubrics. She gives tough exams and quizzes that are unrelated to a speech class. Points will be docked from your speech for the smallest details. If you miss class more than 2 times you will not get a good grade. I would not recommend this professor.
Very nice person but tough grader.
She is very nice
I took this as a quest class and would definitely take again. Lectures were interesting, and all quizzes were open book. We did write a couple papers but they weren't terribly long. My one dislike was the group project that was worth a lot of your grade.
This is an amazing professor who really cares about her students. Your graded by a lot of exams, a group project and papers so if you mess up on a big project or paper you can still earn an A.
Stephanie was one of the best professors I have had. She is funny and personable in class and cares about teaching. It can be tough and a lot of work, but she gives out the grades you deserve based on rubrics.
Stephanie is my favorite professor so far throughout my college experience. She is very nice to everybody and very helpful on assignments. Stephanie organized an optional outside of class study session for our midterm exam and brought pizza for everybody which was very nice. She is always very clear when you ask her about your assignments.
Stephanie is quite possibly one of the worst professors I have ever had. The class is pretty enjoyable and the workload is manageable--up until the midterm. After the midterm, we received several group projects and some more individual assignments, all due at around the same time. She ruined my love for communication studies.
Stephanie was a overall good professor, except she took forever to grade assignments and wasn't very specific with her feedback. If you actually want to know your grade in a class, don't take her.
Did not care for her. Was always rude when I talked to her or had a problem. She had us give a group presentation and my group was horrible, I did all the work, and she didnt care. Hard grader. I honestly hate comm thanks to Volkening and her.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Instead of spreading out assignments, she crammed in all the projects in the end, while still having regular quizzes. Theres no rubric for any assignments, so its a guessing game of how you will do on anything. she spends 40 minutes going over simple topics while skipping topics we ask to go over. Good riddance!
Terrible at giving feedback in a timely manner, or at all. It is so frustrating waiting so long to hear back about an assignment, and then getting no feedback. She made me hate coming to class. I dont recommend her!
Stephanie wins the worst teacher award. I put in so much effort to this class and then when grades came back it was obvious I wasnt up to her standards, but with no notes to improve. And its not like she has rubrics so I could figure it out myself. When anyone would ask questions, she would answer very indirectly and make the person look stupid.
The worst. I hope she reads these comments and realizes how her students actually feel about her class. She didnt contribute to my learning whatsoever, and I had to work twice as hard to learn material, because she doesnt plan the semester with enough time to go over everything.
Not good! Makes all instructions for assignments very vague, I think just so she can give you whatever grade she wants without a rubric coming back at her. She is very disorganized and inadvertently punishes her students for it. Get it together for real.
She's a nice lady but a very bad professor. Grading criteria is virtually nonexistent and her lectures are confusing and follow little to no theme. My grade was up in the air until the final day grades were due to Titan Web. She is Canvas illiterate and used that as an excuse way too often. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. Take a different comm class.
Great teacher who is very respectful and caring of her students. It is very hard to earn a perfect grade on written assignments but is forgiving if your work is subpar. Some class activities seemed to drag on much longer than they should have as well. Take study guides for the tests seriously and ask questions if you have them. Great teacher!
This professor had no clue what she was doing with canvas. She kept apologizing in a laid back way making it look like its okay and its not. She took way too long to grade our journal assignments and kept making excuses for it. She has been late to class a couple times with a Duncan Doughnuts cup in her hand. She needs to get her stuff together.
When I retook this class with a different professor, I passed with an easy, easy A+. Rolain-Jacobs refused to accept my accomodations, would randomly downgrade me and refuse to explain why, and though I followed her outline to a T she would fail me on the whole thing. I also would get almost perfect peer evaluations and then I'd get a low grade.
She is not my favorite professor. I have seen better professors than her. Stephanie takes a long time to grade assignments and uses being canvas illiterate as an excuse for her laziness. Has been late a couple times with food and said traffic made her late, not a very honest professor. Keep looking for different professors.
I took this class during the interim and it was fast-paced with speeches every week. Stephanie made herself available to students on the weekends. There were a lot of activities and "things" due every night but it was interim. The quizzes and exams were easy and the answers were right in the book. The exams were open book and notes.
Very lazy, degrades students by talking to them like they are dumb. Missed meetings, late to class, responds poorly to emails. Tells you your speech is good when she reviews the outline then when you present it she picks it apart and gives you a terrible grade. Sets you up for failure
she was definitely average when it comes to a comm professor. if you don't get the textbook, you won't do that good.
Do not take her. She is by far one of the worst professors I have ever seen. Every day is a long lecture filled with information that is barely on the tests. She blames the class for not preparing for the exams, but the class average is a 50% for a reason...It takes her over a month to grade an assignment. Ridiculous. I'd keep going if I could.
Do not take her. She is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Every lecture you have in her class none of it is ever on the exams. She takes over 3 weeks to grade 1 single paper and then expects you to write 3 papers over thanking break. Her average on exams was 50-55% and that was good in her eyes. Would never recommend her. DONOTTAKEHER!
I really struggled in this class due to the professor. Whatever we learned in lecture was nearly never on the exams. Her average for exams was ~50%, and rarely got a high of 90%, which was good for her. She gave us two group projects/paper to finish right before thanksgiving break, which was due right after break. I would not recommend taking her.
This class was a nightmare. Her exam avg was 50%, her study guides are literally useless, and she hardly knows how to teach. I could have skipped all the lectures and only showed up on speech days and would have gotten the same score. She grades our speeches like it's a level 300 course. However, she knows what she's talking about.
I literally can not emphasize this enough, she grades so harshly. Stuff that should be full point for completing like references she'll give you half points. Theres quizzes every week and then you also get a midterm and final. This class gave me anxiety through the roof and half the time class doesn't start until 10-15 minutes after it's suppose to
She was overall not a good teacher. I had to email her the same assignment over 9 times and it was still graded about two months after the due date. The study guides are useless and her grading is so slow. Impossible to talk to her outside of class because she doesnt have the time. This was just way harder than it needed to be.
Stephanie Rolain-Jacobs did not tolerate people needing to use the restroom, nor any form of tardiness even for the aforementioned reason. She also sometimes decided to show up fifteen minutes late for lecture due to running to get coffee. Lectures were OK, and grading was definitely fair, but that kind of immaturity is unacceptable.
Criteria was unclear, she didn't answer questions in a timely manner or with a helpful response. She didn't grade promptly & my course is still open online six months after completion. Emails were ignored & overall communication was just awful. Don't choose this instructor. She should not be teaching anything let alone communication.
Doesn't care about anything but her class. Not a good grader, HORRIBLE feedback. Definitely take another professor.
She is a nice person by nature and usually understanding when re-scheduling assignments and stuff like that. However, you really have to study for her exams. I found that a lot of the material on the exams wasn't what she provided in the study guide. Reading the book is also helpful while studying because most of the exam content is from there.
Very odd grading scale, no one in my class achieved higher than an 88%. She gives quizzes then the following class she reviews the materials from the quiz. I asked for multiple teacher meetings, to which she continuously cancelled or rescheduled when she knew I wouldn't be available. She is rude, difficult to deal with, and not a good instructor.
No one knows how she graded, absolutely ruined 3 classmates 4.0 GPA's no one in class got above an B+ NOT accessible after hours. Doesn't review quiz or exam material and the study guides are no help. Shaky voice and doesnt seem confident when lecturing. Very rude if you question her grading style on your paper. HORRIBLE TEACHER! STAY FAR AWAY!
Horrible grader and doesn't teach the material before all the quizzes. Wouldn't take her as a professor.
Couldn't be any less clear on what she is explaining. Makes you take reading quizzes on chapters you haven't even started in class because you need to read, but then wastes your time and lectures on the material, even though you have already read it and taught yourself. Overall bad teacher, tries to make jokes and is not funny.
I hated her; she talks to us like children, yet she assigns us long research-based assignments/ essays. She doesn't give much help in class either; she just tells us we need to do the assignments, and her Canvas rubrics don't provide clear guidelines. Don't take her class if you'd like to have a breeze through schedule.
