She's full of herself and she thinks she knows everything. She mocks the Bible and is annoying. She doesn't teach on facts. Her tests are easy to do though.
She is a teacher who loves her subject. Very interesting. Lots of information given, very broad picture. Good class and will take this instructor again
She is extremely full of herself and kind of acts like a prude. Her tests are easy but her lectures are very boring.
Half online quizzes, half final. That's it. There is no need to come to class. She is funny once in awhile, but BORING. She will cut you slack if you talk to her about missing quizzes for a valid reason. It is easy to become her pet, talk to her about her kid and your kid.
boring, unenthusiastic, but all tests are online and easy for the most part if you can get into the material all on your own
Lectures are boring, quizes are easy and online. Going to class is a waste of time, even though she says attendence is req, it is not part of the grade, 3 1/2hr final. Not too bad. Easy history class overall
First, I would just like to thank all those people last semester who ranted about her being too easy. She must read these. She did none of what people had posted. She is not as bad as theses people had said. I was dissapointed with my grade. I felt I deserved better. I did miss a few of her classes. This may have effected my grade. Not sure?
Her lectures begin really helpful and interesting. Uses slides, in some cases as well helpful. Her tests she gives you a study guide overall a- b+ average. Very sarcastic at times very rude, you are not at liberty to ask questions. Throws her doctorate at you 24/7, good for her but don't grade this class at that level. She knows what she is doing.
It's very easy to see which comments were from women. If you are a proud, level headed male student hear me brothers, and do NOT take any of her courses. She is well educated, and well knowledged, but she is one of the most offensive feminists you will come across. Constantly undercutting any male achievement in history.
It seems like she wants to teach you EVERYTHING she knows and will put super detailed slides in her power point and expects you to copy the main points in less than a min. she expects a lot from her students. her grading is fair...effort counts! There are 3 papers over the entire semester plus comprehensive final: 10% of grade
Hm. I really liked her. She is very confident and sarcastic, which may put some people off, but the lectures are informative (if long-winded) and she gives great study guides for all exams.
Shes a good lecturer, but she comes off as a "witch.: Once you stay in the class for awhile it got better. The tests weren't insanely difficult but the reading is a pain. she picked the longest book ever, and its a very boring read.
Extremely smart. Hates tardies, so be on time. She takes roll, so you must go to class. No homework. Gives study guides for midterm and final, but BE DETAILED! One research paper.
Outstanding lecturer. She gives "surprise" essay quizes, often at the end of her intense lectures. Lots of reminder emails and last minute assignments and instructions. When she was absent, she assigned a make-up essay for HER time off. Very demanding, this should count as a Writing Intensive class. Way too much work for 3 units.
She does come across as kindof intense but overall she's a really good teacher. She likes when you participate in discussion and when you come to class ON TIME! She get's feisty if you're late. I liked her a lot but I'm a history major so I might be a little biased...
A interesting class. She teaches by powerpoint which you can download before hand. Buy the text if you want but I only used it for her written essay. It consists of two tests, one essay and attendance. I recommend downloading the notes and following along during class to take more notes.
Atten/Part 10%, Midterm Quiz 25%, Writing Assignment 25%, and Final Exam 40%. The one thing that you can do to make this class MUCH more easier on yourself is to print out the outlines before class and add your own notes while in lecture. However, you should print them out the day before (or early the day of) lecture because they update alot.
Really knows her history & she's very helpful. A lot of writing (should probably count as a WI class). Couldn't really understand the relation to teaching? Tough grader, never knew what she was looking for on papers & assignments & doesn't really give feedback. Pay attention, do the reading, go to class & you should pass.
I did not like her at all. She treats the class like we're all back in our freshman year of high school. Her lectures are very dry and she always has to be right and can make you feel stupid when you ask questions or try and correct her. Her jokes aren't that funny either, but the class is easy and so is the work.
Nothing was ever good enough for her. Impossible to get an A.
Got basic facts about history wrong. Spent most of the time in her class completely annoyed and bored. Lectures were useless. Very biased towards Western Civ. SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING A WORLD CIV CLASS! Tries to be funny but ends up being rude. I am sure she is great in her area but I would never take this teacher again.
Pay attention to lectures (good lecturer). Do the reading and follow her directions (very important). Tough but fair - good sense of humor. And, did I say "follow her directions." She says what she means and means what she says! This class gives a student a lot to think about, I found it very interesting.
Very much a feminist, but so am I, so we're good :) Funny, thoughtful, expects that you do the reading and the work. Gives an option for getting out of the final, but you need to do REALLY well in the rest of the class in order to do so. That's only fair, though.
Professor Seery was very strict and very serious about following directions. She was also a tough grader on papers, but it was very helpful. I enjoyed how we would get water breaks because students were falling asleep. I do recommend taking her class if you are always finding ways to improve your writing. Just FOLLOW directions and you'll be fine.
Just follow directions and you'll get an A. Also, contribute information to the class discussions.
She was a great professor to have. She challenged us academically and the class actually felt like a college class. There is lots of reading and writing (WI) and she expects good analyses from your papers but she is so clear on what she wants from your papers.
I loved Dr. Seery-Murphy! she was great in class sometimes gets off topic but it's funny and breaks up the class a little bit. However she's tough and expects you to put in the work so get ready! Also, don't miss any classes if you can help it!
Gives 3 papers for your grade at first but then adds a bunch of assignments which she assigns arbitrarily and are not on the syllabus, for one assignment, she did not mention it in class and emailed us it 2 days prior. Has you read several books for class which you then cannot use as sources for your research paper. Real stickler for formatciting
Try to avoid taking this professor. Her lectures were fine, but had nothing to do with the work in the class. It's an easy class where you just write essays, but she has stupid expectations. She emailed us about an off topic online grammar assignment, and didn't mention it in class. HIST 100 is useless in general, but Seery-Murphy makes it much wor
At first, I didn't know how i felt about her. As the semester continued i really started to like her. She's really heavy on grammar, formatting and reads every paper diligently. Gives great feedback on papers. Lectures were interesting. Lot's of reading. Came out a better writer out of her class.
Dr. Seery-Muprhy is very intelligent, no doubt. But, this class was very daunting, and she only perpetuates that feeling. You must read, much of the course is comprised of discussion based on the reading. 3 papers, the last one is the 8-10 page research paper. She takes FOREVER to get grades/ feedback to you. Be prepared, she is TOUGH.
Dr. Seery-Murphy has 3 papers for the whole semester. A 4-5 pg book review essay, A 1000 word Primary Source Analysis, and an 8-10 pg Research paper. She is a tough grader, VERY PICKY on GRAMMAR and CITATION formats. Reading is required for discussion so you better know your stuff. If you don't plagiarize you can pass her class with a C-.
I was super intimidated at first but she's actually pretty cool just make sure you show up for class. There's a lot of reading but it doesn't always directly relate to the midterm, easy to study for, very clear about what she wants but lots of lecture.
Avoid taking this professor. She isn't the worst professor I have ever had however I took this class as a filler and ended up being stressed over it. She is a TOUGH grader and wants to see students work for their grade. That would be fine if she actually explained assignments in class rather than just putting it on blackboard. Dont expect an easy A
This class consists of a midterm, final paper, and a final, if you don't do well on those three things your grade is effected. She is a tough grader who expects a lot of detail and explanation. Her class was hard to get through because the powerpoints were long and required us to take ample notes.
Super tough grader! In this class she makes you turn in intro's or rough drafts and gives you feedback, which I thought was great, but then on my paper's she critiqued them heavily... after she just praised them. She's a really good and nice person, but if you don't know your Tudor history, you better read every single bit!!!!
very tough grader and wants you to write how she does. she is a very engaging and funny teacher but can also be a little odd. she gives you awesome feedback on your essays and allows you to send her an introduction which she will look over.
Dr. Seery-Murphy was one of the hardest professors I had while at Sacramento State. She was rigorous, demanding, and mostly just real with the students. She is a staunch feminist, amazing historian, and she is a going to either make you a better writer by the end of her class or fail you. The feedback was always on point and you earned the grade.
Has solid lectures, and 3 essays we had to write. Not too difficult, she just expects a lot out of the essays. She has a querky personality, and could be pretty funny. Her impressions are pretty good too. I didn't buy the book and did fine, just take notes for lectures. I found she wasn't too biased in her lectures, and enjoyed listening to her.
Wish i didn't take this class while taking four others. Unclear and used to be an English Prof so very specific about format. Be sure to read the book for the book report. Summarize the CH's as you go, will help you LOADS when writing the paper. Three papers, stupid pointless busy work. Wouldn't recommend taking her. Pulled off a B somehow.
It might be because of different circumstances, but I really couldn't get through this class. You have to spend a lot of time for this class outside lectures- for reading, writing essays and doing quizzes (which are also mostly essays). If you don't do a set number of essays you don't pass, which sucks because schedules don't always line up
Her lectures were refreshingly interesting, especially for such a dense subject. I usually hate history but her explanations are entertaining and easy to understand. The only thing I'd say is she's a tough grader and you should be careful to follow her prompts very clearly or she'll dock points for lack of clarity. Overall good, though.
This is my first review of a teacher because I can't stand her. Her feedback on one submission said I didn't read anything--when I had and spent a lot of time on it. She missed dates and didn't follow the schedule because her kid was sick, she didn't give good or encouraging feedback to help improve on future assignments. Fail if you miss 1 thing.
Very anal grader. She majored in English so be prepared to meticulously proofread for grammar errors. On several occasions she would spend more than enough time lecturing the class on her own research and syllabus policies which doesnt help us at all, including sending out about 4 emails all regarding attendance which was completely unnecessary.
This professor does not get enough credit because she had a fiery personality and expects the best. I took her for two classes and she taught me how to write with tough love but also with very positive feedback WHEN EARNED! If you care then she cares but if you don't put forth the effort why should she? You will learn a ton!!
She knows her history well! Her lectures were entertaining and informational. I left her class knowing more about world history then I did before. She does make you work for your grade, which is expected of an upper division college course. There is a ton of reading do not procrastinate on it. Despite being academically challenging, I enjoyed it!
This was one of the most stressful online classes that I have ever taken. She is very opinionated with grading and she expects you to write the way she wants. Very tough grader. She wants you to be VERY specific when it comes to writing. I have never had a professor that gives such opposite and negative comments on my assignments. Don't recommend.
She is a very strict grader, and doesn't give helpful feedback. Quizzes are short essays, which are difficult with the prompts she provides (half of the time, the reading material does not afford enough information to answer the prompt). Final is three different essays. Try to find a different teacher for European History classes!
SHE. IS. AWFUL. She critiques more on writing than she does the actual content. She took 35 days to grade one essay, and when she did she was hyper specific about answers when, guess what, SHE NEVER SPECIFIED ANY GRADING CRITERIA. Do not waste your time with her! She is wayyyyy to anal about grading.
Professor Seery-Murphy is a very knowledgeable instructor. She enjoys lecturing, take many notes. Only 2 tests and one project. No hw, she puts all reading assignments on Canvas for you. Just be ready to memorize people and events. No group work, just writing for 1 hr and 15 minutes with a break.
Seery-Murphy teaches a college level writing intensive class at a high school level. Her grading is so inconsistent and fluctuates so much. There are 5 quizzes in total and a final. The average for all quizzes has been 75% which is a joke because her questions are surface level, yet she expects you to respond at a masters level.
Honestly, I liked the content of this course. My issue was with the quizzes, which are just essays. Her prompts are not very clear. I found it difficult to figure out exactly what she wants. I attempted to make my topic sentences "arguments" but was told they weren't, which is confusing. She's very knowledgeable, but her grading style is sporadic.
Honestly, she is a good writing teacher and gives good feedback about your writing. But the amount of reading she wants you to do is whack. Reading 90 pages each week to write a short essay on 2 pages is whack. Take a different class honestly, it would be better for your gpa cause she grades really hard. BUT I am also not that smart of a student :)
Very few graded assignements - none of which are particularly stimulating or challenging. Eight 5-paragraph argumentitive response papers over the course of the semester - including the final. She is a tough grader, but not in a particularly constructive way as her feedback tends to be fairly inconsistant. The final is 50% of the course grade.
She has few assignments in the grade book so make sure you do well on every assignment. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss more than 3 classes you automatically fail. She is a relatively considerate grader and gives plenty of opportunity for you to succeed, but you have to actually read the textbook and apply it to essays.
Professor Seery-Murphy's lectures were fun because of her sarcasm and humor. She also didnt assign too much homework. The difficulty resides in her essay exams. They arent impossible, but you really need to know the course material and follow her specific instructions on format/argumentation. That being said, she does give good feedback if you ask.
WORST CLASS EVER. Wish I could give her a 0. Super unorganized, unclear, and rude when responding to emails. She does not post content when planned to making things hard to follow along. There were only 3 assignments for the whole year which were 2 "quizzes" and a final in which you had to write 2 essays for the quizzes and 3 for the final.
She is by far the worst college professor I've ever had. She is so unorganized when it comes to assigning and giving information about quizzes. There are no hw assignments just quizzes which take the form of 2 five-paragraph essays and a final which is 3 five-paragraph essays. She is a very tough grader even though she asks the simplest questions.
She is a lazy grader who makes excuses for not grading on time. She is a tough grader who doesn't really explain your grade in detail. She gives general feedback. Note you will not do well if you are not good at English. I followed her feedback and even based on her feedbacks I still didn't pass. I reached out to the English department to help .
She provides links to the online txbks so you don't have to buy. The whole course was made up of 2 quizzes & 1 final. She doesn't believe in multiple-choice/short-answer quizzes so get ready to write essays. A quiz should be 2 argumentative essays answering her questions & the final is 3 essays. You must show that you read the txtbks.
This is a writing-intensive class, so only essays. That being said, there are only 4 essays the whole semester. They need to be 3-4 pages long. Not too much to write but the topics are really hard, also she grades pretty harshly, makes sure to follow instructions. She may give an extension if you have a valid reason for needing one.
I had her last semester and thought that this was gonna be a decent class, instead it was rough. Her father passed away during this time and she had a couple more problems. This impacted the class, but that didn't change her grading criteria. If you take this class you NEED the main history book and talk with your classmates to compare essays.
I loved Professor Seery's class. She would lecture and we'd take notes and we'd have a quiz every few weeks posted online. I never got homework in her class. However, she is one of those teachers who fails you if you don't show up. You get three absences. other than that I loved her class.
She is very caring and will work with you when you need help. Attendance is mandatory, lectures/PowerPoints are not posted, and she is a strict grader. She also does NOT use canvas to submit assignments, you send them to her through the csus email. Overall, her lectures were interesting, and I liked her as a person, but the class was challenging.
Dr. Seery-Murphy is a hard grader and expects a lot from history majors, but she is really nice and funny. If you need help or are encountering a personal problem, SHE WILL HELP. Just ask! I think a lot of people struggle in her classes because they are too afraid to ask for help (her instructions can be vague) but if you ask, she will help! Great!
Taken to cover the WI, Humanities and UDGE requirements. Had to write 3 essays 3+ pages, will get automatic D if less than 3. Final was 3 essays with a minimum of 5 paragraphs each, different topics and could not use the same information in each essay. Plenty of time given for each assignment, fianl and clear requirements. Very opinionated.
Pros: Pizza party for students, final paper is due the day before grades are submitted, professor makes students turn in rough drafts and does peer review. Only Homework is reading the chapters. Cons: tough grader, only 3 major assignments, participation is mandatory for a grade, assignments instructions are often confusing
Her prompts asked for info dumping: describe the social, legal, & political roles for women. She wanted it to be an argumentative essay. What do we argue about? She states to not info dump, that contradicts every prompt. Grading was just a list of what you did wrong & didn't have clear grading criteria. Ex: B-/C+ was the grade given for one paper.
Save yourself the trouble and run for the hills. If you want to learn, go Google it. This class was a nightmare start to finish. Prof had personal issues and took it out on her students. Will not give you clear instructions for papers and then mark you down without clear explanation. You have to email her the work and get rude comments back.
Class consists of 3 papers throughout the semester then a final of 3 five paragraph essays. Professor is very difficult to deal with, mostly inaccessible, and a tough grader offering little meaningful feedback. Other students often were only told to seek tutoring when asked for ways to improve. About 10% of class got an A. Avoid.
Harsh grader with vague feedback that is not constructive.
Really difficult class! Only 3 major papers but doesn't grade or give any feedback until AFTER finals. If you do ask for help she'll say it's not her job to teach you and to go to the tutoring center. Having said all that, she gets mad and will dock you a whole grade if you don't write to her standards, which would've been nice to know beforehand.
you will only get 3 papers for the whole semester so there is not much room to mess up. She took along time grading papers and was not really helpful or clear on direction.
(history mystery) in this class practically you read and analyzed a book over a course of a semester outside of class and then discussed in the daily lecture in class, at the end you'll write a final paper that is a 5 page minimum essay. She gives out weekly assignments which have vague instructions. She grades very strictly, give vague feedback.
Asynchronous class. Does not grade papers on time and is a hard grader. Only 3 papers and 1 final; does not seem like a lot but her instructions are vague and very unclear. The final consisted of 3 separate essays submitted as 1 which made no sense. I do not recommend taking her course at all.
Her lectures are laced with antidotes of her rules for history. Seems nice but honestly a waste is time. One of the few professors who you are better off passing on. Sometimes she would say things vaguely enough that when you double check you find she is only partially correct. She maybe better in person but would not take her again regardless.
I got the feeling right off the bat that this professor did not care for me. It didn't feel like it was for any particular reason. All of her feedback on my work was negative and never encouraging. Her instructions were never clear nor were the comments on graded work. She took a long time to grade assignments. Lectures were often off topic.
1hr+ of lectures, 2 chapters of reading each week. 3, 3-4 page essays with vague/confusing prompts. Gives vague feedback that contradicts previous feedback. Final consists of a bank of 7 questions, you only need to answer 3 with each question being a 5-paragraph min essay. Textbook required for essays but can get away with not reading (ctrl+f).
Extremely unorganized course, she gives assignments with little to no instructions. There is also never a rubric for the essays. She brings her personal problems into the class and takes it out on students. She gives rude and unhelpful feedback.
I am a senior in college. This professor is the worst organized, the most condescending and least relatable professor I have ever had. Her assignments make zero sense, she clearly never plans, or plans how lectures and assignments fit together. And what's worse, is she grades as if she's done her job well. Avoid if you care about learning at all.
STAY AWAY She was away for about 75% of the semester. 3/5 of our homework assignments were given to us by a substitute professor, but she was the one who graded it. Feedback with grading is awful. Shows no interest in helping us learn or improve. Only take her course if you don't need a professor present and can self-teach.
The professor is unprofessional. A poor communicator with ineffective teaching methods. Feedback is vague, harsh, and unhelpful, and (HER) personal issues severely affect the class. The syllabus is inconsistently followed, and the professor refuses to provide clear guidelines and rubrics. Your entire grade relies on your ability to self-teach.
Very unprofessional. She claims that a lot of students still don't know Chicago style and that they should since we had "gone over it". Brings her issues into the lecture, complains about her ex-husband, who's a professor at the school, and maybe takes him instead. She grades terribly and doesn't teach very well.
No. Please don't take this class. I forgot to do a rating search during orientation class selection & oh boy. 350 words cannot contain what this professor has put students through. If you are looking for a challenge or want to suffer, this is the teacher for you. Lectures: Chicago Style & Ex Husband. Instructions: Chicago Style. Email: no response.
This was by far the worst course I have taken in my 4 years at Sac State. The professor was almost entirely absent the entire time, gave unclear instructions for her assignments, barely had any assignments uploaded, and would rarely grade them. If you missed an assignment, you're screwed. Best thing she did was give as a sub for 2 1/2 weeks.
This is the only professor at Sac State that I have been disappointed with. She was absent the majority of the semester and when she came back, she extended our class until December 27th. She did not stick to the syllabus and the substitute teacher in her place did a better job teaching us the materials.
This professor was absent the majority of the semester and then had the audacity to assign something during winter break. Our final project is due today (Dec 27) and when some students tried to email her for clarification on said assignment, an automatic reply came back saying that she's sorry but she's on break and can't respond. smdh!
By far the most unprofessional professor I've had in my academic career. Even if you follow the rubrics perfectly you will get a failing grade, I back this up knowing that I worked very hard with peers in the class. It seems that opinion of the student contributes heavily into how she grades. She lacks the quality of even being called "professor."
Start a class discord for moral support! Extremely difficult class. You will work for an A, excessively. Feedback is vague, audio lectures are…interesting as she shuffles about?, assignments vague. Not the class for you if you struggle with writing/structure. Harsh grader. Dean knows she's problematic, but you leave with skills.
She missed half of our semester. Gave very futile feedback and wasn't very good when it came to helping us succeed.
She's alright. Teaches you how to write good papers. She's pretty openly progressive but that's to be expected on a college campus.
she didn't grade my final because she wanted me to redo it, keep in mind I submitted 2 wks early if she had told me to redo it before the due date and told me what to improve then I would have redone it but since she took 2 wks to grade it, I just asked her to grade it as it since I didn't want to redo an assignment that would not impact my future
Weird vibes, spent a lot of time talking about her ex husband.
Easy class, but this professor never replied to emails and always busy or out of town during the semester. When we struggled with nine assignments due the same day, she was unreachable. Promised to post our midterm but never did, left again for vacation and ignored all messages. I emailed her eight times she replied once. Just very unprofessional.
She was alright in my opinion, it was an asynchronous class so as long as you pace yourself with the work you wont fall behind. Midterm consisted of 3 essays which weren't hard to do at all. Overall an easy class if you're looking to satisfy the requirements for your ge's.
Please do not take this professor. Absolutely the laziest professor I have ever had. Class is easy but the weekly quizzes are such time wasters, find a better fit. She was gone half the semester it felt like and would assign stuff on each holiday for no reason despite her going on break. No regard for her students or her job. SKIP
I am currently a junior and this is by far one of the more difficult classes I've ever had to take. The professor was gone for almost a month, leaving us with just one message for communication. There is an insane amount of work to do in such little time, especially the Midterm and Final exam. She does not give enough support to students in need.
Lazy professor, she uses connect for assignments. Didn't give enough time for us to do final. She makes multiple announcements of how she'll be out of town and takes days to response back to email if she does.
A pretty good professor so I don't understand all the bad reviews. She didn't assign too much work and the work she did assign wasn't too difficult. Always gave us good feedback on how to improve. The only downside was that attendance was mandatory. Nice person.
