Tests are reasonable and she makes efforts to interest you in the class. Textbook use is non-existent and offers extra-cred for tests. Notes all come from Powerpoint. She's kind of cute too.
mrs. stephanie is by far one of the most legit teachers at southeastern. she keeps class pretty interesting and fun. There are 3 test and a final. the tests are average difficulty. there are quizzes almost every week on Blackboard and she offers plenty of bonus work.
Horrible clarity. Nothing she teaches is on the tests. She does not make the material interesting at all. Very rude and does not help with any personal conflicts with tests or quizzes. DO NOT TAKE HER
Did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything I would like to be. And I could fly higher than an eagle cause you are the wind beneath my wings.
I actually found the class to not be that hard. And I am not good at science of any sort. The only time you use the book is to study, but even with it the test are not hard. Definantely would recommend her.
She was extremely helpful and understanding. I thought she was very personal and willing to work out problems. She offered more extra credit than any other professor. Make sure to read the chapters if you want to do well.
ONE OF THE BEST SCIENCE TEACHERS I'VE HAD IN YEARS. SHE IS SO EASY TO UDERSTAND AND UNDERSTANDS MAJORITY IN THE CLASS AREN'T TRYING TO BE GEOLOGISTS. LECTURES ARE CLEAN AND TO THE POINT. IF I HAD TO, I WOULD TAKE HER AGAIN. TOO BAD I DON'T NEED ANYMORE EASC CLASSES OR LABS.
Wonderful teacher! Makes science fun. Take her class.
Very nice teacher, but exams can be unexpectedly tricky because of the language she uses on test!! pretty easy and fun though.. took to field trip as well!!
Really cool, down to earth lady. I'll be honest, not an easy A, definitely the most work I've ever done in a lab class, but it was fair and not overwhelming. You will learn a good bit and it does supplement the lecture class. Like I said, really cool lady, I recommend her.
Very down-to-earth and funny. Her tests are tricky, but if you study well enough, you will do fine. Her bonus papers are hard, though. Just use the internet instead of your notes because you won't have all the info. that you need. I recommend her very much. Not an easy A, but worth taking if you want to learn something.
She's the cutest teacher at SELU! Her test are a tad tricky, but manageable. She's very helpful at clarifying how things work. Super sweet and funny, just don't use your phone! If she sees you with your phone she will get very angry and yell at you. ):
A very cute, nerdy teacher. Her tests are right off the lectures, and she offers FIFTY BONUS POINTS over the course of the semester. Online weekly quizzes are also easy. I RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER TO ANYONE WHO ENJOYS AN A OR B! :)
She was very nice and helpful. You have to attend every class but if you do that you will do good on the test and love this class.
Great professor. Cute as hell. Loves her work. I got an A. Has extra credit and clear testing. Taking her for 102 also.
Cute, nerdy, loved her, TAKE HER!
Ms. Stephanie is really great. She is excited about the subject matter and super nice. Her tests are pretty easy if you come to class and take notes and she lets you write a paper to get 10 bonus points before each exam. She is an epic nerd and adorably quirky which makes her all the more fun. Take her!
Roses are red, violets are blue, rocks rock and so do you!
Good teacher. You do take a good amount of notes but she does not allow computers, cell phones, recorders in the class. She HATES technology. She offers a bonus paper the day before the exam worth 10 points each.
She is very funny, and awesome, but her tests are ridiculous. The class average has never been above a 78. No matter how much I have studied, my highest grade was an 88. She words her tests in a very confusing way. A plus is that she gives easy quizzes and bonus papers to keep your grade up.
Comical & interesting professor. Lots of material for all 4 exams to cover, 4 bonus papers, weekly online quizzes. Course is cool and she is funny. I made a B.
Terrible notes, class is way to hard to understand. Incredibly boring material that makes it impossible to pay attention. Tests are very difficult. The tests questions are very specific
She is extremely rude, treats her students like they are in High School. The material she covers in class is interesting, but really in no way relates to her test. Her test are extremely hard...my piece of advice is don't take her....you really have to study for this class, when really it should not be has hard as she makes it.
Terrible Professor,no laptops allowed. So I suggest finding a buddy in the class since she does not post power points to make up for no laptops/VR. Her test are extremely hard. She teaches beyond a 101 level. On a plus side she gives bonus points for papers. Don't take this class if you are taking more than 15 hours, if so kiss your GPA by goodbye!
The class isn't as bad as the last few posters have said it is. The subject is hard, but I think she does a good job teaching it and making it interesting. She also gives 40 possible bonus points and lecture outlines to help you out.
This is probably my favorite teacher I have ever had. If you go to class and take good notes, you'll make an A. You do have to study, but I took her for 101 and 102 and never opened up a textbook. Her questions can be worded tricky, but as long as you pay attention you should be fine. She's always will to help you and explains things very well!
I'm a junior with a 3.8 GPA and thought this class was unnecessarily hard. She teaches as though it's a 2 or 300 level class, not a 101.And,yes, she is VERY rude to her students & unapproachable. From what I saw, the only students she had any rapport with were science majors. If this isn't part ofyour major, choose something or someone else!
Ms. Stephanie was one of the best professors i ever took at selu. She is enthusiastic about the course and makes the subject matter more interesting by showing videos that relate to the real world applications. Do the bonus papers and study for the test and you will walk out of the class with an A fairly easily.
She is super nice, not real keen on giving out powerpoints to anyone who missed class, and doesn't give out notes, so class is neccesary. BUT she does a 10 point bonus paper due before every exam, and that helps a lot!
She's awesome! Super sweet, makes class fun and interesting. You learn a lot about rocks.. also volcanoes, rivers, etc. You definitely have to study for her tests, but she has a opportunity for bonus during each test, and also weekly 10 pt quizzes online. Which help out greatly. Overall great class and great teacher.
You have to study very hard for each exam, and be sure to do the bonus papers. Her tests are 30 M/C & TWENTY T/F! On a positive note, she does make the class interesting & fun. She let our class use voice recorders & I highly suggest you use one. Only take her if you are prepared to STUDY & pay attention! She is not an easy A!
I found that the professor made this class WAY TO HARD for a 102 class. I am usually an A/B student. I studied and went to class and still made a C (borderline D). Her outlines ARE NOT helpful nor or are her lectures so take advantage of attendance not being mandatory because it will not make a difference.
She is the worst. I mean, she made it harder than it has to be. She didn't allow us to use any technology and if she caught you texting she would yell at you in front of everyone. If you have to take this class, make her your last resort.
Very very knowledgeable. Only downfall to that is she speaks to students like they are geologists. Could try harder to break things down initially instead of when you ask. Must come to class and must study for exams. There are bonus opportunities which help with studying. Would recommend.
You have to put in a lot of effort to make an A. I highly recommend doing the bonus papers. Quizzes are tricky, as are the true or false. Studying is a must. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll see a difference in your grade. She's nice and easily approachable. Always answers emails. DON'T TEXT IN CLASS. I'd take her again.
I love science and I am a science major but essc101 was incredibly boring with her and the tests were ridiculously hard.. I knew all the material she taught and reviewed it thoroughly and the tests were purposefully tricky. I barely made a B. Do not recommend her
I have a 3.4 and have never made anything lower than an A in science. This woman's class is incredibly boring, she does not let you use electronics to take notes. If a cell phone goes off she will ask you to leave and call you out. This woman's class is harder than flappy bird. Her test are the most ridiculous things in the world. Do not take!
Aside from her being extremely useless for help, the lectures being a major snooze fest, the material covered in class barely showing up on exams, her biggest problem is that she is very immature and talks more like a student than a professor. She's told atleast two students they acted "creepy" and she talks to her class like high school freshmen.
She was the greatest! The tests were hard, but she really injected a lot of energy into the lectures.
Her tests are difficult but if you answer the bonus questions you will do fine on the tests. Studying those really help, even if they are lengthy. You can't have electronics in class and the notes are not posted online. You will need to study because she purposely tries to trick you on exams. The class average for each test was about a 70.
She was an okay person. You will not pass her class if you only write down the things on her power points! Record her lectures & take notes from what she says! She's a. Rey smart lady. Too smart. & expects her students to be just as smart. But if you study hard, you'll make it out alive!
This isn't a "memorize the material" kind of class, it's application. 4 tests, 10 online quizzes. She also gives 10 point bonus opportunities for each test, but she's very picky about the answers and gives no partial credit. The material is beyond boring, and she doesn't post notes online. Woman loves rocks, that's for sure.....
The class, in general, is very boring. She is very enthusiastic about what she teaches and will let you know ahead of time. 10 point bonus essay on every test, but does not give partial credit. Lets you know her tests are made to trick you. STUDY and you'll do fine.
AWESOME teacher. The class was hard, but she made it interesting.
Tests are extremely trickly and the material is not ever covered in class, so don't feel bad for missing class. If you want to make decent grades on the tests make sure you know the extra credit questions. I used Quizlet for quizzes and the tests and made a high B. Using quizlet is a must to pass!
She now puts her lecture notes online. I would recommend printing them out and adding notes to them, she makes things more specific during her lectures. This helps with the online quizzes and answering the bonus questions. She is very enthusiastic and helpful. Study your class notes, her lectures, and the quizzes. I thought she was a good teacher.
She makes the class a lot harder than it needs to be. Especially the tests!! Her lectures are somewhat interesting, but boring for the most part. This is a 101 class and she expects you to be an expert on rocks and stuff heading in. She's a smart, cool lady sure, but too smart and expects her students to be the same. Wish I took something else.
Enthusiastic about the course material and gives you notes that you can print for her lecture, although boring(goes off-topic),and rushes too much during it to even understand it. Tests are confusing. All Quizzes online when it's not even an online class. Smarty attitude with you using technology (recording, taking pics) to take notes in class.
You can really tell that she loves what she teaches. The lectures are interesting (and she gives you some notes!) but the tests can be very tricky. There are weekly quizzes which can be tough, but they give you an idea of what the test may be like. It's almost mandatory to do the bonusstudy questions. You learn more and can earn 40 bonus points!
She loves what she does and is more than willing to help during her office hours. She is prompt with email replies. She is a realist and aware of people trying to get by with little effort. She makes you apply material; not just recite it. Her test are designed to make you fully process the material to get it correct. With 20 bonus points I got 100
She was fantastic! I thought she was a great teacher.
This class is miserable, but it's just the subject. Mrs. Welch is so excited to teach this and she tries to make it interesting, but the subject is just terrible. ESSC101 is about the Earth and ESSC102 is about space, I wouldn't of taken the first class if I knew this. You really have to study for her test, although she gives you the notes online.
Great teacher! She actually cares about the stuff she's teaching and she is very nice.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. She's a great teacher and she's so excited about what she's teaching! People just complain because they don't want to have to work for a decent grade.
She loves this subject so much you can't help but try to like it, if only for her sake.
I thought that the class was fantastic, but the tests were pretty difficult.
Professor Welch is super down to earth and knows her material well. For each lecture there is a lecture outline. This should NOT be the only material you use to study. Take notes along side the outline. Use the book as reference. APPLY YOURSELF. Answer the study guides! You have to study and pay attention to do well. She also offers bonus work.
Anyone claiming that she was rude clearly never took the time to visit her office hours or email her. She was really nice and helpful and quick to respond to emails. The tests weren't easy, but they were definitely fair.
Awful teacher. She tries to trick you on her test on purpose and she doesn't mind letting you know that.
She has been extreemly difficult. I have spent hours upon hours studying for each test, although no matter what, the material provided before the tests is not enough. She does not understand personal situations at all. She was very blunt with us and does not make much of an effort to help improve your grade even if you meet with her personally.
Great teacher! Very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject! Gives lots of extra credit opportunities! If you skip the lectures you will not do well on the exams!
I found Mrs. Welch's class to be very interesting. She gives exam questions at the end of each lecture so we would go into an exam with like 24 guaranteed points already. Some test questions came from what she said in class that wasn't on the lecture outline so some people thought that was tricky. Just take notes, study, & you'll do fine!
She's a wonderful lady, but I found her exams to be extremely difficult. She has four 50 question (30 multiple choice & 20 t/f) exams and tends to cram a LOT of material into each one. However, she does have a 5 credit bonus assignment with each exam & weekly quizzes. All in all, it was simply WAY too much work for an intro level course!
She is very knowledgeable about the subject, and her online lectures are pretty entertaining to watch. However, her tests were very very hard. She does give extra credit bonuses for every test. I studied so much, more than ever, and still got a B. Beware of tricky test questions. Otherwise, she's fun to learn from.
I really liked the format which was online lectures and a once a week class. It was only review during the class, so it helped me understand the subject matter more.
She is super excited about what she teaches. All lectures are online, which is great because you don't have to go to class except for tests. But, if you don't look at the material, you won't pass.
This class is really not that hard, it is just harder than people expect it to be. There were 3 tests and 11 qzs (online). One of the quizzes gets dropped and the final is not cumulative. There were 4 extra credit opportunities that were really easy and really helped my grade. She's super into the lectures which makes the class more fun. Take her!
I took her TV course. 1/2 online and 1/2 in class. Class is optional because she posts her lectures online. You only have to go to take the unit tests, which are multiple choice. Each chapter has a quiz (usually one due each week) and they are online. You must watch the lectures and take notes. If you don't, good luck! She gives bonus every unit.
i took her through the online classes. her online lectures were good and easy to understand. she gives tons of quizzes and a bonus opportunity for every test. the tests are on the tricky side because they have a lot of t/f the final is NOT cumulative! if you watch the lectures and take good notes, do all the quizzes and bonus, you should be fine.
Lectures are videos... WATCH THEM.. if you don't, you'll fail hands down and DONT binge watch cause they're long and tend to get boring. Talk to her if your not passing and want your grade up and she'll tell you how to study. Do ALL quizzes and bonus and it'll keep your grade up for sure. Great teacher just gives way too much info for a 101 class..
The test are extremely difficult. She is very knowledgeable and is excited about what she teaches. However, too much for 102 and I would not take her. I received a C in class, not pleased.
I took half in class half online. I enjoyed the class and you can tell she enjoys the subject matter. The online lectures are at least 45 minutes a piece. Class periods (except for tests) aren't mandatory and just for questions and review. Stay on top of the lectures and take good notes and the tests are pretty easy. Plenty of extra credit. Do take
Mrs. Welch is fantastic. People aren't lying when they say her tests are extremely tough but every question is fair game. I received an A in her class ONLY b/c I wrote down not only what was on the slides but things that weren't & that she discussed herself. Do this & you won't find the test material too tough. Extra credit assignments helped a lot
I absolutely enjoyed this professor and her class. Her lectures were well organized and easy to follow. She was more that accessible via email and during office hours. She is passionate about the subject and it shows. I would definitely take her again. Great since of nerdy humor, too.
Prof. Welch is a good teacher. The course is half online and half in-person. The lectures are videoed--show up one day a week to review what was in the lectures. It was pretty boring until the end when she discusses galaxies and the universe. Definitely have to study to pass tests, but she gives good bonus opportunities. 3 MC, noncumulative tests
For me, it was a half online half in class. So we would meet on Mondays only, and when we met on Mondays without a test, we would go over the lectures she posted on Moodle. You HAVE TO STUDY though. Test were hard.
Overall I liked Professor Welch. I took her for ESSC102, online lectures. We met in class for review days and test days. Her tests aren't that difficult, but they aren't as easy as you'd think. I love Astronomy and Space Science but I still received a C in this class. Just put more time and thought into it than I did and you should be good!
Get ready to only ever go to class when there's test. Her tests are so hard and worded very tricky. She puts all the lectures on moodle and tells you to not come to class. HOW LAZY! Even though most classes are twice a week, you will need to watch 3-4 1 hr long lectures a week just to stay on time. Extra credit is hard, written work worth only 5pts
IF YOU TOOK HER FOR ESSC 101, this class is a tad bit harder in the fact that we had 50% more tests and the extra credit was worth only 5 pts, not 10 :( even though they are optional, GO TO THE REVIEW CLASSES! she gives the answers to the extra credit and goes over the tests (she reuses questions!!) dont do lectures last minute.
In the telecourse the lectures were all online, the only attendance required was for exams. However, if you take the time to attend the review sessions the week before exams, she will tell you the important info for the upcoming exam. She makes subjects I am not naturally interested in seem interesting. Her enthusiasm about science is contagious.
This class was one of the hardest I have had for a 101 course. Stay on top of the lecture videos and go to every class because they are helpful when studying. Her review days are important. Take good notes, take all of the quizzes, and STUDY a lot!! Get ready to put a lot of time into this class. However, she is very understanding and passionate!!
I took this class as a hybrid class. We only met once a week rather than twice and all of the lectures were videos online. The lectures were lengthy and boring, but the prof def loves what she teaches which made it better. We had 6 tests and you def have to watch the lectures to pass. There were quizzes online every week which really help grades.
My class was partially online so the main thing to do for that is watch the lecture and do ALL the quizzes. Going to the exam review also helped me.
I watched her lectures online and only came to class for the exams. The exams are very hard and she asks questions that she doesnt discuss during the lectures. If you dont keep up with the quizzes, you will not pass.
She really loves this subject and you can feel it. Constant quizzes every week and if you forget she will not reopen them. Tests aren't that hard but not everything was on the power point. Remember to listen to what she says because she mentions things not in the power point.
The class is very hard if you are not a science major and you need an easy class to fill in do not take this class. her test are very difficult and tricky. She makes it way harder than it needs to be probably cause she is very passionate about this subject. do not take this class for an easy grade.
Very nice and if u go to the limited classes and watch the videos very easy
She is not a bad teacher. Just had to watch the videos she assigned. Only bad part about this course was there would be five videos due which each were an hour long video. Take good notes from the videos and you should pass this class.
Do not take the online class, filled with multiple hour long lectures every week that no one feels like watching, if you don't study a lot, you will fail
Many quizzes. Lectures are all online (VERY MANY-HOURS OF LECTURES FOR EACH TEST). Not worth the time. Passed all other 6 classes with an A and received a D in this class. A class 2X a week would have been much easier than watching 8 hours of lecture for one test. Tests are all multiple choice/True false but very tricky.
I do wish the tests were easier, but the lectures were very clear and the instructor was very nice and approachable. You absolutely need to watch the videos to pass the class, there are no in-class lectures in the telecourse class.
She is an amazing teacher who really loves the material and her students. But her class is very hard. You have to watch 3-4 hours of lecture videos every week (which takes more like 4-8 hours when taking notes) Review days are optional but you need them to help clarify info. Her tests are hard because they're mainly T/F. Prepare to work hard
Do not take this class. trust me youll hate it
Amazing class, she really loves the subject and it was a really organized class. The tests aren't easy though, definitely don't take for an easy A.
I took Mrs. Welch for Earth & Space Science 1 + 2 + Lab and I don't think I could have had a better teacher. She is very engaging and if you participate and ask questions she genuinely appreciates interest and rewards those who pay attention.
Easily the worst professor I have had at Southeastern. I am an A student, yet her class was impossible. Watch the videos, even though most questions arent even from there.
One of my favorite professors of all time! Super sweet lady, very helpful if you put in the effort. The telecourses class in not completely online, it really helps to go to the review sessions.
Test are fairly difficult. She tends to go off of topic when discussing important questions for the test.
I would not recommend Mrs. Welch. She is a really tough teacher and does not round up grades if they are close to something higher. She goes off topic and expects us to know everything she knows. A lot of people that take this class arent earth science majors so she should keep that in mind but she doesnt.
Ms. Welch is a phenomenal teacher! Her lectures are fascinating, and she gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. You have to actually watch the lecture videos and take good notes as if you are in class. She explains geology really well and her passion for the subject makes the lectures enjoyable. One of my favorite teachers of all time.
Mrs. Stephanie teaches through online lectures that she knows do not work. She refuses to teach another way. Her tests are extremely detailed and are application based. It is super hard to apply something that you only learn through online lectures. She also gives two question quizzes. If you do not have a strong science foundation don't take her.
Her classes are telecourses, so the lectures are all in videos in moodle and there is an optional weekly class period for review. The videos are good, but if you don't like the idea of a class like that you should take the other guy.
Her test are HARD. You really have to discipline yourself to take notes and study. She is very nice and willing to help. Take advantage of her reviews. They help tremendously!
Some of y'all didn't watch the lectures and it really shows... Watch the lectures and take notes (like you should for any class) and you won't have any trouble. The questions often times came straight from the notes.. If you want a class you don't have to work to get an A in, probably just stick with horticulture.
takes the class way too serious considering no one that takes it will be majoring in earth and space science. she was very unfair with her exams and the time allowed to take them. expects you to learn 7 chapters, take notes, then gives you a 20 question test worth 100 points. i also dont believe some of her emails/responses are professional
I took her class last semester and she was the sweetest, she really cares about her students. She helped me pull my grade up when I was struggling in the class. It's not easy, but she does everything she can to pull her students through the class.
Does not seem to care about student success AT ALL. Unfair testing conditions, all grades aside from tests (pop quizzes and extra credit) aren't worth anything. Take this class at your own risk.
Prof Welch is.. something. That is all I can say. In this class you have to watch lectures and complete outlines, with the transition to all online classes she did not seem to care much. We would have multiple lectures and after a week there is a test. At the end of the semester she could care less, she does not round unless you are borderline
I just finished the final in her class, it was tough but the last unit on the universe was amazing! She's a really great lecturer. The tests were hard, so watching the lectures is super important, I don't think you could even pass without it.
Shes! So! Petty! Ive never met a professor whos so unprofessional in her emails!! This is a 101 class, in the middle of a pandemic, and shes making everything harder!! Not enough time to take tests, proctored tests, material that she didnt teach, rude
Her emotions really show in how she talks to her students. She talks down to people and on top of that her tests are incredibly difficult. She has a time limit, you cant backtrack on questions, plus essays. All of that in 30 minutes. She doesnt have a rubric for the essay questions either, and asking for one results in a rude email back
She is unbelievably patient and forgiving of her students. She caught a whole bunch of people cheating on the first exam this semester and they got off with a warning. It was all so stupid and unnecessary bc she gives you all the information you need to pass the class in the lecture videos. She's super nice when you talk to her in person.
She really cares whether you actually learn the material or not, so the online class uses the monitor webcam stuff so you can't cheat during exams. The lectures are really good, I wish the tests weren't quite so hard.
She is such a great teacher and really cares about her students. She has pushed back tests and assignments due to the storms and also gives extra credit for every test. The tests are not difficult if you watch the lectures and take notes. I have her for lab too and she's super nice and you can tell she loves what she teaches. Highly recommend her!
She is awful. Lecture videos are good. but tests are extremely hard. she takes pride in having her students fail. I like her lab course but absolutely hated her lecture class. She doesn't try to help. Also, the online tests are recorded which isn't awful but the tests are super hard and tricky.
Really awesome teacher. Her televised lectures are fantastic, so much more interesting to watch than voice over powerpoints. She did a cool telescope night for us and gave us bonus points for attending!
Truly passionate! I was inspired and I learn so much in her course. Her lectures are packed! I had to watch them 2-3 times, dictate, and review the dictation to make sure I didn't miss anything because quizzes and tests have very little room for error. Ex. miss 3 you get a high B. Overall, very responsive and professional - Queen of Adjectives
If you are taking this as an elective you are better off taking chemistry or something else. I found this class to be unnecessarily difficult. The lectures are long and boring and her tests are worded in a way meant to confuse you. If you are ready to study the material religiously and neglect other classes she is for you.
Her lectures are extremely interesting. She seems like she really enjoys teaching and gets really passionate about subjects which I think makes a great teacher. The only thing is that her tests are really difficult. She makes her own questions and they tend to be wordy and confusing.
Ms. Welch is such a sweet professor! Her tests are quite hard but straight from her lectures. She is always willing to help you studying and she offeres extra credit for every exam. If you put in the effort, her class is amazing. Take her if you have the chance!!
This class was dreadful. Very few Students who take this are science majors yet she treats the class like everyone is. She makes it incredibly challenging, goes out of her way to make you fail& gives no opportunities to get a good grade. there are very few assignments which are all incredibly hard because she goes I have a way to make them that way
Great lecture videos and really good communication all semester. Tests were hard, you definitely have to watch the lectures to pass. Overall super nice teacher.
She's super nice but the class is very hard and it really requires you to be disciplined in watching the lectures since it's all online this semester.
Over the top nice and responsive teacher. Anyone complaining about this class is just super lazy and they don't want to work, but there's no getting around watching the lectures - possibly multiple times to understand the material.
uses Respondus for tests, requires face and sound recording. Be prepared to spend all your free time listening to lectures a million times and memorizing everything said just to be able to pass tricky questions on tests. As a non-science major with a job and children, this class takes up way too much time. Should be worth a lot more than 3 hours.
Really simple and straightforward lab - an easy A if you show up every week.
Amazing professor! But super hard, monitored exams. I feel like the class is still worth it for the lectures though, its more like watching a documentary than a boring slideshow.
You can tell that she loves what she does. She gives extra credit for all of her exams which can really help your grade. Her tests are a little more difficult, but if you watch the lectures and study the material, you should be fine. Her lectures are pretty interesting, and they do not bore you to death. For an online class, she is very involved.
Her lectures have a cool format but the material is drab and the exams are super difficult. When our class was failing as a collective, she said that it was because we weren't watching the lectures even though you have to watch them three-four times to even understand what is going on. She takes great pride in how difficult her class is, I believe.
Please if you have the option to not take any of her courses I highly recommend doing so. This class was so unnecessarily hard for what it is. This course is extremely hard and I wouldnt recommend taking it ever. I wish I could write more to show my hatred towards this class:)
She's so awesome! I've learned a lot in this class and we got points for going over to the observatory and looking through the telescope, which I would have liked to do anyway. Great lectures, easy tests and simple class structure - overall great class.
Overall, the class is structured well, and she makes the lectures interesting. You can tell she really cares. She is understanding and offers extra credit. Tests are not bad if you put in the work and understand concepts fully. I would recommend taking her.
She was so extra nice and helpful and super generous with extra credit opportunities. I had a hard time with the material bc science isn't my strong suit, but she set it up so that I could still make an A in the class even with C's on the exams bc of all the extra credit.
This was an online course so it could be different for in person courses, but there were so. Many. Lectures. There were often at least 3 lectures to do per week, sometimes 4 or even 5 and you have to rewatch them several times to get all the tiny details you need for the test. I took notes on the video lectures and still was confused on the test.
She's great! She really cares about her subject and her students, does a lot to keep us informed. Lecture videos are really nice.
This was my favorite online course. I found it easy. Many struggled, but it was due to neglecting the lectures. They are necessary. I took notes with the outlines provided, watched every review video, and did well on each test. Everything was spread out and I never felt stressed. I highly recommend this course to anyone willing to engage in it.
Yes she's nice. But she wasnt helpful in anyway. She doesnt care if you pass or fail. This class is strictly lectures, which are long, but you need to watch them multiple times. I watched lectures and studied, and still couldnt seem to pass her tests. She gives extra credit, but it really doesnt help your grade. This class is unnecessarily hard.
Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to this class. Online or not. It is lecture heavy! The lectures are boring and so strung out. I would recommend using the textbook, along with the lecture videos. She's nice, sure. I clearly remember students asking for ways to improve their grade and she, simply, did not care. This course could be so fun, too.
She's so nice, and the lectures were awesome! Overall great class.
I recommend. She gives extra bonus assignments and is very understanding!
If you want an easy class and are not willing to watch lectures, she is not for you! She is very passionate, will always answer emails, and is more than willing to meet with you in-person. There are 3 units with about 16 videos each, all with an easy 2 question quiz after. Each unit has a mini-test and final which are both proctored. You must study
She was tough but amazing. Lectures & reviews are key to the tests. Do the reviews, pay attention to lectures, take good notes, and study for her test. I had to earn my A but it was easier because she is so passionate about this subject. I learned so many things I would have never known from this class. Highly recommend her and this class.
Her lectures are so cool she has these videos she makes and theyre like movies. the class is hard if you don't study but it isn't too too bad
I enjoyed taking Dr. Welch's class. The lectures are fun, just make sure you pay attention and take notes because they cover lots of info. There is an extra credit opportunity for each unit. Quizzes/tests are on the shorter side and exams are proctored, but as long as you actually study you'll do fine.
You will only pass this course if you don't work or don't have any classes as she believes her class is the most important class. Over 8 lectures shoved into a 25 question exam that is very hard to get a passing grade on. More than 4 quizzes due every week that absolutely do not help towards your grade at all. Most inaccessible due date time.
Overall I love Professor Welch, she does an amazing job teaching, even with the online courses. She explains everything in detail and does reviews before tests. I highly recommend her as a teacher! Although the content was a lot and I did not get an amazing grade, I would take her again in a heartbeat if I could. Also make sure to study for exams!
Honestly her class was really easy. I took her over the summer for reference. She makes the lectures interesting to watch. If you don't take notes on lectures and study, you will fail. That being said I feel like you have to try to fail, she gives you all the material you need. Easy and not stressful.
Hardest B I ever made, but super cool teacher. Awesome videos, you absolutely have to watch them to pass.
DO NOT take! She has no resources available to help you besides her lecture videos. Her class is all online and says that in class attendance is not required. Her tests are 25 questions on Moodle worth 4 points a question and are really hard. Only bonus she gives is papers and quizzes, but doesn't do much to help your grade. Take Bruce Sherman!
I can say take anyone but her. Her lectures, quizzes, or reviews have nothing to do with the test. You have several hour lectures to watch every week and a quiz for each one. The quizzes are just 2 questions and are really easy but they do not have any impact on your grade. The tests are proctered but quizzes arent.
I love this teacher - she was so organized and the lectures were amazing. The tests were hard, but very fair and she was very generous with the extra credit. We got 15 points for going to an observatory!
I took both her 101 and 102 courses and while both were amazing, not easy at all. It does require LOTS of studying and you must watch the lectures to pass. Entirely too difficult for a 101 class but I enjoyed it. While it was a little bit harder, I found her 102 class better and easier to understand. If you want an easy A, do not take this class.
4 exams with 2 question quizzes for each lecture. Very organized. If you watch the videos, take notes, and do the extra credit, you will pass easily. I feel like it was WAY too in-depth for a 101 class, but if you have to take it, just do the work and it is fine. She's very smart and helpful and explains the topics well. Very easy to access.
I did well in essc 101 but essc 102 kicked my butt. A lot of the info on the test felt absent from the video lectures. That may have just been me. Despite studying for hours I could not manage an A. The test are only 15/25 questions, and worth most of your grade and proctored.
Do not take any class by her.. she will cause so much extra stress and unnecessary work for you.
This class is definitely intense for non-science majors. It goes really in-depth for an intro course. Compared to the other ESSC in-person on campus this is your best option to get a good grade. She does a bonus which is a plus so if you do it all it will raise your grade a few points. she seems nice and easy to talk to if you have any issues.
This class is very hard. Video of lectures for each chapter along with two question test. Than their are mini test and exams that are really difficult. You have to be a scientist or you have to cheat to pass, and you cant cheat because their is lockdown browser and camera. I wouldn't suggest taking her but if she is your only chance good luck.
worst class at SLU
Got my first B in 10 years thanks to this class - this is not a class for the weak! The material is challenging, and studying for multiple days did not help me do any better on the test. She is very communicative and the structure of the class is pretty organized, but both of her classes (101 and 102) are very difficult. Avoid if you can.
She is nice but her midterm and final for ESSL 104 are just ridiculously hard. I felt like I did really good on the final and made a C. Other than that, this class was okay.
I loved the class - the material was very interesting for an intro class and she made it super easy to follow the structure of the class. I wish there were more assignments other than tests, I think I would have made an A.
Don't listen to the negative reviews! She's super nice and approachable for help, but you have to watch her lectures or you're not going to pass.
Mrs. Welch is NICE just not the best professor. Generous grade scale by 1%. I suggest a teacher with more interactive work so your grade doesn't rely on tests. Her lectures are more complex than the material. GOOD organization! DOES NOT round up! HARD tests/quizzes! DOES NOT give homework/study guides! I don't recommend her for bad test takers.
Fantastic professor - she's super organized and responsive, and the lectures are really interesting. Most of the grade comes from exams but they're straight out of the lectures so they were pretty easy. Definitely do the extra credit assignments if you want an A!
I took this course online over the summer session, really enjoyed this class, found lectures engaging. Note, she tries to trip you up on exams with the wording of the questions. The material was fairly easy for me. Do all of the extra credit (including the "field trip") and no reason not to make lower than a B if you put forth the effort. No HW.
Professor Welch's ESSC101 is a challenging yet rewarding course. While the workload is heavy, engaging with the material and using resources like Unstuck ai can help you succeed. Stay on top of the lectures and extra credit for the best results.
This class is rough. If you are a quizlet person good luck because it will not work. There is no in-between. You either pass or you either fail. Good luck if this is your only option.
I took this course expecting a base level 101 class, but I was very wrong. I took it online, and every week, we had 2-4 lecture videos and a 2-question quiz that went with every lecture. Be prepared to study these lectures for weeks because the exams are tough. She does provide extra credit for each exam. Would not recommend it if you want an A
I wish she taught more than just 100 level courses, this class made me want to switch my major! Her lectures were amazing, and the class was extremely well organized - she makes it so easy to stay on top of all the assignments because everything is so clear. The exams are hard, you have to be prepared to do well on them.
If you're expecting an easy class just to get the credit, maybe rethink your decision. This class is very in depth for a 101 class and harder than any online class really should be. However, if you watch the lectures, do the assignments on time, and DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, you will pass. I regret not doing the extra credit - take advantage of it.
Her lecture videos are really well done and as long as you watch them you will do good on the test. I'm taking her again next semester.
Her tests are a bit unfair, but she's very responsive on groupme and is willing to help. Her lectures are very long for an online class and don't let the 101 fool you, it's not easy. I really liked the professor though, she's sweet and passionate about the material.
Good luck is all that I have to say. Be prepared to watch 1-2 hour lectures more than once a week, take handwritten notes for hours and still not make an A. Countless of hours worked hard for an A but yet all of this work for an elective class just wasted to make a C. Oh, and beware that she is not willing to open back assignments for any reason.
Great lectures, tons of bonus which is how I still did well even with hard tests.
Professor Welch was an amazing professor! She really helped me and was willing to go over my tests to help me improve. This class is difficult for a 1000 lvl course. The tests are very hard and you have to pay very deep attention to the lecture videos. The lecture videos, bonus, and review videos are key to success in the class.
I took the astronomy lab class, it was a more laid back class, you just fill out the assignment, and when complete, you can leave. There is a midterm and final, both super important, and they determine your grade. Go to all the labs, it is important for exams.
She gets way too much hate. While the class is very hard, she tries to simplify it as much as possible. Her lectures are pretty long, but she goes over a lot of material. She provides extra credit for every exam, and 5 free points. My only real complaint is that some exam questions didn't seem to be based on the slides, but on things she said.
This professor and class is terrible. Total waste of time class for most people and their major. So make it easy? Wrong. Tests are very conceptual and hard to study for; 2 hour snoozefest long lectures you have to watch to learn anything. Very time consuming for a useless class. Bonus offered but almost didnt seem worth it. Far drive for little pts
It is insane how she is allowed to test the way she does. There are no power points, only lectures. They are very difficult to follow and she does not put the same information on the test. The amount of stress is not worth it. Be prepared to study for HOURS upon HOURS just to not pass.
Lectures were great, tests were hard. She uses the respondus lockdown browser and some people got busted for using chat gta to try to cheat on the exams, so you have to learn the material to pass, but there's enough extra credit to make it easier.
Hard for a pre-req class. 3 tests (25 questions), 3 mini test (15 questions), and 8 quizzes per test, worth 2 points each. Tests matter a lot, lots of studying but if you have to take, I would take this teacher. If you miss a quiz or miss a deadline you CANNOT make it up. Her lecture videos are pretty good and easy to understand tho.
This class is only hard if you make it hard. I didn't study as much as I should have at the beginning of the semester and my grade reflected that. I was able to go from a low F to a high C because I started taking notes and studying. She's generous with bonus if you do them and so kind if you just take the time to explain how you are struggling.
Yes ESSC is looked at as hard, but she makes it easy if you study, also multiple bonus point oppurinties.
