Not mean, but HARD!
Go to class, lectures everything, pay attention and take notes. On test if one answer is longer than the others its is the right one usually.
Not too terribly hard but very boring. Can be somewhat condescending.
his lectures are usually boring...but he tries. i feel sorry for him, usually by the end of class about 1/2 the people have walked out. though his tests are pretty easy and he offers extra credit.
Sucks hard core. MONOTONE

This is one of the easiest classes I have taken at UTSA. I have an A in the class and have done an average amount of studying. He IS boring, but a very good teacher. If you try, you'll get an A.
He only has 3 grades. The first 1 was the midterm. He took so long to grade it that by the time he gave them back it was too late to drop. He assigns so much work that it is almost impossible to do it all. But he is a good and interesting lecturer.
He is the hardest teacher in the poli sci program. He will make you a better and stronger student. Brilliant and really easy going. This is not for slackers but it's a great prep for the work load in law school.
if you can take notes he's a great teacher, everything is straightforward with him
Boring class but if you take notes and listen no outside studying is really required. Offers xtra credit on tests. Overall an average teacher just because his lectures are boring most of the time.
He's kinda monotonous, but I think he's very real with his teaching. He'll give it to you straight. I mean how great can you make politics sound anyway? STUDY STUDY STUDY if you want to make a good grade on the tests
Boring
Brillant, nitpickey on papers, monotone in lectures, demanding, you defintly work for what you get he does not give points, a must take for poli sci majors
This is the worst professor.Very monotone. The lectures are boring and the tests are difficult. He is not willing to help whatsoever.I am an A student and this class kicked my butt. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
monotone, boring, too much reading. expected students to know what he knows. not much of a teacher, didn't learn much from his class on political movements. I got A s in all other classes, got a C in his class.
He is an alright teacher, lectures are sometimes interesting. I skipped class alot and I still did alright b/c I read the chapters before every test. Do the extra credit with 3 people and you will get all of the credits if you all take it. I got a B.
RUN! RUN! RUN! monotone and boring....does not know how to teach the material at hand. wasted my $ on new york times that he made us purchase. if you must take him, take the online quizzes and you will be fine
Have you ever had the feeling that your teacher is staring at you? well if you haven't then take him so you can discover the uncomfort. He is the worst lecturer I've ever taken...the midterm was so hard half the class dropped. genius but bad teacher
His lectures really aren't on much of the text so I dont really even go to class. His class is the only one I skip. He is a nice guy and tries to help you out with the test. Just study the text and you'll do okay.
Very boring. Very Monotone. I would recommend not taking him. Tests have to do with choosing the BEST answer not the right answer. Although, he did let me make up a test when I was in the hospital.
This class alright. He knows his material and is very passionate about it. However his tests are very hard, no matter how much I study I just cant get a good grade.
he is monotone and makes you want to fall asleep, he knows his stuff though and he is a pretty good instructor
Gives outlines of lecture on projector for you to copy & fill in with notes. Boring, yes, but not a good enough reason to avoid him. I didn't buy the NYT, just read it online or in the Library. But those quizzes got me an A & they will save your grade if you take them seriously.
Very smart, very involved with politics. He gives extra credit that moved my grade up to an A-. Take advantages of extra credit b/c it can make or break your grade. If you don't like to go to class or read, DO NOT take as his class demands work.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF. Classes are very boring, a lot of reading. Test are essays with 1-2 page answers for each ques. Monotone voice & at the end of every sent. he talks under his breath so you can not hear what he is saying. I think if I would've had this class from another prof i mighthave like it
This dude seems nice, but is biased. We had some guy from a union come in and get on his soap-box. I want to know facts, not the opinions of some dude who is obviously pro-union. Also, don't talk too much in class.
very boring but gives extra credit quiz worth four points if you get all of them right the final isnt over the whole semester its an okay class just really boring
Smart guy, expects a lot from students. The class requires a lot of reading. The midterm was very long for the time alotted. You have to really know your stuff to get an A in the class. He's helpful and pretty avaliable for questions outside of class.
Class not difficult but very boring. He lectures like he is reading an essay. Takes a while to get used to him talking like he's writing a paper. Easy to get bored and distracted and stop listening. However, his lectures are very thorough and tests mostly come from them. He also has easy extra credi
he's not a bad professor, but the class can get boring. a lot of students just get up and leave 30 minutes before class ends - myself included. the tests, however, are fairly easy, and the content is easy to understand.
Best prof in dept, hard and demanding on tests, but a must take, do the reading, socialist
This class is by far the worst I have ever taken in the history of my education! Never take this prof you will fall asleep even if you're the type that stays pretty attentive during even the most tedious lectures!
can't stand this guy. It was like he made absolutely no effort to make the class even remotely interesting. Just stay away from him.
he is the worst, most absolutley boring prof i've ever had. DO NOT TAKE!!! he reads the lecture like the class is a group of ninety year old geriatrics! tests are very hard and he is hardly available for outside class help. He makes politics more boring that it already is.
If you miss his class or dont read the text than u wont pass. He will help you but you have to go to him plenty of times.
worst ever. out of about 450 people enrolled in his class, only about 50 showed up for his boring lectures. he would post an outline, but he would never follow it. there was no review to study off of and there is no point in taking this class with this professor. i hate politics more than ever.
This was the most boring pol sci class I have ever taken. I didn't learn much more than I already knew. And I slept in every single class. But I went to them......
this guy sucks
Professor Amberg is a very sweet, interesting, and extremely intelligent man whose lectures are interesting as long as you are able to listen to the words he says and not the way he says them. He is very realistic about government and doesn't try to feed you "the party line." A really wonderful man and a great professor. Highly recommended!
DONT TAKE HIM EVER...boring monotone...not nice
one of the most boring classes ive ever been to. class was in one of the biggest lecture halls at utsa and 95% of the seats were empty.
i like him alot. he seems to keep my interested with his views
He's a good teacher, but sometimes goes off on tangents. He speaks in a monotone voice. His lectures are thorough, and good. The test is mainly taken from notes. I suggest you print out the lecture outline before going to class; it's on webCT.
He is an amazing and extremely knowledgable professor. He can add alot of depth to basic concepts while still being easy to follow. I real treasure when it comes to the experiences and first hand accounts he shares in class.
I took him in summer school. I loved his class. His lectures were interesting and informative. Not just that but he was really helpful if you came to see him with any concerns you had about the class.
This class was so hard to pay attention to because Professor Amberg has such a monotonous voice. I didn't read the book at all and couldn't pay much attention to his lectures but I got a B because his tests are worded in such a way that it's easy to figure out the answer. I didn't really learn anything though...
man i barely made it through that course. i hate politics though. it was my minor
Had Amberg taught the Political Movements course, and I truely enjoyed it. Yes, he voice does tend to lull a disinterested class to sleep, but he's informative, knowledgable, and OPEN-MINED (you don't always get that at UTSA). His test are reasonable and he's willing to work with you. He's a solid professor.
Very good teacher, test are hard, but you must do your readings.
Excellent professor, very knowledgable
Buehler? Buehler? ... This guy is very bland and a bit boring, but not every class can be a party. He's knowledgeable in his subject and gives a good lecture - if you drink enough Red Bull to stay awake through all of it. Reasonable tests, not easy - but not rocket science either.
I love this prof, MIT, TA'd for Hunnington @ Harvard, brillant, but unassuming. Laid back and a dry, bitting sense of humor. Hard tests, you write till your fingers go numb but he is the best, and monotone I admit.
I didn't think he was biased at all. He gives viewpoints from each end of the spectrum. If you go to class, will you make an A. If you don't go to class, you will be confused. His lectures are easy to follow.
Knows what he is talking about, but rambles on. He is hard to follow sometimes. Nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him for Politics. However, he does post lecture outlines and a lot of his lecture is from the book. I managed to make a B in this class, but it was not an easy task by any means.
Amberg, is rude and is not a very good teacher. I made a B in this class. He does offer extra credit but it is not a simple process at all. You have to read the book, and go to class. I like POL. So that is how I made the 89 if you do not like POL do not take him!!!
I hated politics to start and when I took this professor he made me hate it even more...VERY BORING!!! Gives extra credit but is only 4 points...doesn't like republicans and you have to read a lot...test are kindove hard if you don't read but sometimes the questions are very easy to figure out....no homework or anything....just 3 tests and final..
wow, he's really not THAT bad...he's just boring. i don't have any interest in politics, i took it, and i made an a. he goes off on tangents during lecture, and he's very soft spoken, so if you're not into politics its tough to stay awake sometimes. just go to class, take notes, SI if you need to, and you'll do fine, those people down there crazy.
I really enjoyed his lectures he has alot to say about what is going on especially with the elections coming up, class can be boring, you must read, but if you go in to talk to him hes really nice and helpful-points out exactly which topic you are confused about and even helped me with test taking skills, I would recommend him if you like to learn.
He is broing.. and his tests are mainly on common sense... I didnt learn a lot but I managed to make b's
aweful .. i absolute hated this teacher i made all sixties on the test. i studied alot and i even went to the si leaders for help. This is my last basic class to take and well it looks like i am taking it again. get out while you can.
His class isn't hard if you go to class take his notes, read the chapters and study over the chapter review. I made an A just doing that, his tests are either common sense, straight from the book or straight from his notes. The hardest part is staying awake as others had pointed out.
His class was sooo bad...completely impossible to stay awake if you go. VERY left wing and makes it a point to state his opinion of the government. A tenure professor so he can't lose his job and he knows it...HORRIBLE get out while you can...never studied never went got a c...
His lectures are really boring. But the class is not hard. Read the chapters, do the online quizzes from the books website and you should be able to pass. The hardest part is making urself go to class, his lectures will put u to sleep.
C'mon people, he's not THAT bad. His lectures are a little monotone, but they're very informative. He offers extra credit for every test that boosted my grades from B to A. He is also very willing to help students make good grades. He IS a good professor, the rest of the raters are just immature freshman that were partying until all hours.
extremely boring!!! his lectures are monotone and his tests are hard. he went to MIT and you can tell. he knows the material very well but teaches it in a way that is incomprehensible.
This class is really hard to stay awake in. He talks the entire time and it isn't very interesting. There are no visual aids or power points, just straight lecture. The tests are all MC and aren't very hard. If you read the material and just listen in class, you will do fine on the exams. Easy A or B if you try just a little.
Forces you to answer your own questions. He really tries to make learning more of your responsibility. He does not use anything but an outline in class, which makes it hard to know what to study for. Very helpful if you seek his office hours. I learned TONS about politics.
Did not like at all! Hard to follow
This professor knows how to put students to sleep. I have never had a hard time staying awake during a class, but this man found a way. However, if you do go to class, you'll know every answer for the tests. If you skip and try to read the book, you'll be lost.
I've read all comments about this professor, and they have hit the page head on. Very boring, no powerpoints, no review, straight lecture, maintains one tone voice that puts you to sleep. Even taking this course just as an elective, I would not recommend this professor. Politics should be and can be fun but not by this professor.
I admit he was boring, however I learned a lot and his test are from the power points.
He does know his politics, he just has trouble presenting his knowledge is an understandable fashion. Boring as previously stated. Doesn't provide topics to study for test or any notes/outlines[except for the last 2 classes??]. Glad class is over!!
Not for slackers. Brilliant professor, honest & objective analysis. Makes you think & makes you a true student if you put the time in, attend class, & make connections. He's not MLK when it comes to speaking but his knowledge is immense. He outlines the class clearly, if you don't get it, it's probably your bad.
Great course. In depth comparative analysis on political economy & varieties of capitalism. The reading content is intense, but manageable if you put the work in. Amberg does an excellent job of presenting the material, especially if you read & attend class. Material is clearly outlined & he's really thorough & astute. Not for slackers.
He is a very kind professor and really does know a lot about politics. His lectures are very straightforward and it's important to listen to them because the exams are over what he says in class and what you read in the book (so be sure to read). I do think that his exams are somewhat difficult because he tends to be very specific with the questions asked but if you study and pay attention in class, you should at least manage his class with a B or better...I only hope I can :(
Very organized lecture. can be a bit dry, but gives you all you need for the test (pair with reading). clear expectations and extra credit options.
Not as bad as the reviews say, boring VERY but informative. 4 tests, 4 extra credit quizzes. A's are possible in this class but i got a B. Wouldnt recommend him if you absolutely hate or dont know anything about politics bc your grade may suffer
He is a brilliant professor. His classes are not for slackers. Do the reading and your own research before class and you will do fine. Test are long, 10 essay questions. He is a hard grader on essay but will read your essay and make comment before you turn in. I would take him again if I have a chance.
Not a tough class at all even for someone who knows absolutely nothing about politics. You don't even have to go to class. But to pass the tests you DO have to read ALL the chapters. 4 tests and 4 extra credit quizzes that are ridiculously easy. Went to 4 classes the whole semester and got a B+...not excuse not to pass.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken in my three years of college. To say its a intro of government he didn't make seem like it.
Lectures are very boring must sit close to him in order to understand what he is saying. 4 exams and 4 extra credit quizzes. MUST read the textbook and I highly recommend going to class his exams are over text and lecture.
Very nice guy. Sit close to the front, hard to hear. He is very helpful. Must attend ALL classes. Test are a combo of lecture comments and book comments. A lot of his questions are common sense. Four test, 50 questions each. I didnt study much, I got a low A.
Very hard to hear and wont fix his mic even if you ask. I attended every class and did the extra credit quizs but still didnt understand him or the subject and just plain disliked his class. Plus it was extremely boring and people were constantly walking out. And if you complain to him he will just say "I have tenure, I dont care"
Professor is extremely boring to listen to
he is super boring
Lectures are like really well-written analytical essays. The arguments are clear & easy to follow (also, Daily Show references), but he is no Jon Stewart (see: boring). I get the impression he really loves politics/thinks its his civic duty to teach young voters, but hates teaching/secretly thinks we're all idiots. 4 tests. Listen, read, easy A.
Ok he is super boring but if you read the book and try super hard to pay attention you can do pretty well. Do the extra credit quizzes for sure. He loves politics so he gets into what he is saying just have to make sure you write down the important stuff!
Great professor, proficient in his field. He is a soft talker so many find him boring but if you have a strong interest in the subject, definitely take himA The class is difficult but by the end of it, you will have learned much, which will change your outlook on what you perhaps used to believe were normal conditions of our government & economy.
This class will be kind of a challenge if you are the kind of person that likes slideshows or some type of visual to look at. Professor Amberg just stands at the front of the class and just lectures. You really don't have to go to class if you read the book. No homework and final isn't cumulative.
Do NOT take Amberg!!! He only gives you 1 paper and 2 exams, the Final is worth 60% of your class grade!? He gives out tons of dull reading assignments and has you read a couple of books. When it comes time for your final exam, he is purposely vague about what will be covered, then grades you unnecessarily harshly, as if the subject even matters.
Talks so softly you can barely hear him even if you sit in the front row, which I did. Requires a bunch of dense, boring readings, not to mention 2 NOVELS! His grading is RIDICULOUS. If you ask him what the tests/quiz will cover, he laughs won't give you a straight answer. He's a nice and intellogent guy, but I will never take him again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! His lectures are NOT powerpoint based, so he does NOT stay on task. He just gets up there and starts talking and goes off on so many tangents, so you NEVER know whats important. There is NO test review, nor an actual review day. an A is almost impossible because you'll never really know whats on the test.
Mixed feelings. He is insanely knowledgeable in Politics and I learned to love politics as well and took away a lot of knowledge I will use forever. However, the lectures are long and sometimes boring. And there is a lot of material he discusses not on the test. You have to read and it's dense. You have to KNOW (not memorize) Politics to do well.
Lectures are very long and boring. He's not interesting and many times his facts are wrong and he also contradicts himself. Also a huge liberal if that effects you. Lectures are pretty much essential to passing. Only 4 tests including the final. I've never opened my textbook and barely pay any attention.
Excellent lecturer. The test questions from his lectures were extremely easy to pick out and remember from his stories. For those worried about not hearing him, he uses a mic in a theater now so that's not an issue. Show up to the lectures with the intent to learn and you won't have a problem.
This teacher is great because although his lectures are exhausting if you don't show up to class you can read the book and fill in the outline notes. all you have to do for tests is go to the book's website and go to the study place and do the quizzes and you're sure to pass
I did not like this teacher whats so ever there are only 4 test in total that determine your grade so if you fail one it is hard to get your grade up. Also his "extra credit" isn't actually helpful unless you get a 100% on it. Really tough class.
Professor Amberg is not someone to take if your attention span is minimal. His lectures are based off an outline consisting of major talking points. You will have to take notes from what he says. That being said he presents the material in an easy and logical manner. His tests are based about 85% lecture 15% book. Kinda hard but a great class.
Professor Amberg's class was not too bad but be ready to take a lot of notes. He basically just stands in front of the podium and talks, through out the entire time.
I wouldn't recommend for any student to take Prof. Amberg. Only 4 tests decide your grade in the class. The "extra credit" is irrelevant to what you're currently learning. He is degrading and his lectures turn into him rambling all class. There is no review handout for any test. For a beginners POL class, seems to be designed for a government major
You will need the textbook!! His lectures are not note based so easily goes into his own opinions rather than necessary material. u can never show up to class and it wont matter. study for exams from textbook and always do the extra credit quizes!
His lectures are really long and not for those with a short attention span. Your grade is based off the four exams, if you don't do good on those, you're screwed. The exams are not easy but are not extremely difficult. Would not recommend, especially for a morning class.
If you pay attention during the lecture, read the textbook, and take good notes, you will be fine. For extra help go to SI sessions.
His class was pretty easy, didn't use the book at all through the semester and still was able to pass with a A-. He's lectures are pretty long and can be boring but everything he talks about will be questioning on his exams.
Lectures were long bit you could clearly see how passionate he was
This is a tough class if you don't do the work. He expects you to attend lecture and read the book and take notes.. If you do that you can get a great grade. I found the lectures interesting and despite dreading this class.. enjoyed it. Amberg is definitely passionate about the subject and it shows through lectures.
talks to much , stuff talks about not on the exam
The grade is compromised of 3 exams and a final and an online quiz for each chapter. The tests are 50 question tests and the quizzes are maximum 5-8 questions. He also gives current events quizzes online for extra credit. Most people don't show up to class and still pass. Read the book and your lecture notes and you should be fine.
If you love to hear lectures this is the class for you. The class is very boring. Grades consist of 4 exams only. There are 4 extra credit quizzes worth 4 points each but you have to get them all correct to get the points. You have to read the book if you want to pass.
No extra credit no make ups. Lectures are lengthy and hard to study. Read entire textbook Bc tests are 50% lecture 50% textbook. His lectures are not simplified so they are hard to follow and even though I studied for each test I never got above an 82. Change classes.
Worst professor I have ever had. Lectures are extremely hard to follow. He never directly discusses what you will be tested over, and your entire grade is based off of just 4 tests. In my opinion he does not know how to teach and expects each student to already know everything. Even going to SI meetings does not help. Do not take this class!!
Great professor who is very passionate about the subject, and it shows in his lectures. However, a portion of his test are based of his lectures so it is crucial to attend his lectures. Reading the book is a must and makes his lectures easier to understand. He offers a different, but interesting, view on politics, and I recommend this professor.
Upon reading most of Amberg's reviews on here, I was very afraid going into this class. However, I was pleasantly surprised. His passion for politics is clearly shown through his dedication to his lectures. Majority of his test questions come from things he covered during class. I never once touched the textbook.
Let me just say that I failed this class. Not even a D, but failed. I did not miss a single class and even went to the SI sessions. The prof is very sweet and passionate, but needs a better teaching style. I learned a lot, but couldn't show on his tests that were very wordy. He doesn't go over tests or return them. Avoid this prof!
very monotone, reads off a outline, talks in circles, attendance is extra credit but there was a problem with tophat that he refused to fix, try to understand his lectures and always read ahead so it can make more sense
The lectures are very long and dull, except you can't skip because that's where he pulls a majority of his test questions. Overall a not a hard class but he just makes you actually work for the grade.
Just don't.
Amberg is one the of the best professors at UTSA. Ive taken most of his courses. He is super smart, articulate, caring, and very knowledgeable about the subject. I enjoyed his Ivy-League-quality lectures. He challenged my thinking and I learned a lot from him. The grading criteria is very clear.
Roomberg allows you to have a cheat sheet of every of her exams. The homework for this class is due the night before the exam, which isnt as bad because you get to focus on your other school work. She also knows most of her students dont want to be there yet, she wants you to at least pass her class and enjoy it. She's a real sweet heart honestly.
Professor Amberg's lectures were long and boring. He doesn't post his slides and doesn't put effort into helping us and the only grades are test grades. Even when we requested hw to help our grades he said no. The tests are hard and even the SI got a 74 on one test. The reviews are not helpful at all. But, he cares about what he is teaching.
Mr. Amberg is probably one of the most knowledgeable professor's in the political science department at UTSA. The content of his slides are identical to the content in the textbook. His lectures may be boring from time to time, but their extremely relevant and important if you plan on succeeding. He also has great and informative office hours.
There are five exams including the final and there are no homework assignments so your grade for this course depends completely on if you pass or fail the tests! He talks kinda quiet and he doesnt post the powerpoints online so take really thorough notes or prepare to just read the textbook after class.
So boring. So very boring. Speaks quietly, doesnt post PowerPoints online, requires attendance, only grades of the exams. I had a problem with my iClicker counting my attendance, and when I went to his office hours, he assumed I was lying and just told me to figure out how to fix it. Just take it online.
Amazing! Honestly, all these bad reviews are probably from people who don't work hard or even bother trying. I never showed up to any class, asked people to send me the powerpoint slides, and did the readings. As long as you either read or attend the classes and get the notes instead of the info from the textbook then you'll do good. I got an A.
He's an amazing professor. He's really passionate about the subject, but his lectures are just too monotone and boring. Also, the tests are framed in ways that don't make sense most of the time. Overall, he's a great professor, but he is just not inspirational enough to get the students to care. If you are into politics, I highly recommend him.
Facilitates lots of useful information, great lectures and readings. Show up, study and you'll pass. Tests are non stop writing for an hour and a half - not a really tough grader. Towards the end of the course he became more left-wing propaganda but the first 3/4 of course were objective. Want to learn, take him - want an easy A, don't take him.
Lectures are long and he often goes off track. Tests aren't super hard though as long as you study from the book and from notes. He also takes attendance.
He is a good teacher but nonetheless, his course is difficult, probably one of the hardest I have had.
He is not very good about responding to students. It is also very easy to fail given the fact that the only grade you will have are exams. I understand COVID-19 has changed a lot of our lives, but it would be nice to have a professor that cared about his students learning and he simply is not one of those.
Hes not an lenient teacher, all he gives is 4 exams for the whole semester so you have to really study for his exams and he will not help boost your grade up whatever final grade you receive even if you failing he dont care he take his job to serious.
This man has gotten A LOT of flak, and he deserves some of it. He doesn't allow food, laptops, or phones, and he is not good at engaging with his students. I would not retake him, but he's not all bad, he's an easy grader if you pay attention and know the basics and clearly cares. If you aren't afraid of hard work and want to learn he's for you.
