Pretty easy class ALOT of writing! Instructor is cool and has a good sense of humor when it comes to feedback from discussion boards.
Agree with above, lots of writing but probably the BEST US History class I have ever taken. Teacher is very professional and really enjoys history. I learned more in this class than I ever did by 'memorizing' for a multiple choice/fill in the blank test. Tough on grammar/spelling but VERY fair! Get this professor! Thanks!
Professor Bacon is an excellent instructor who insists that students synthesize the course materials and write educated responses. Another poster cited the fact that Prof. Bacon requires extensive writing and this is the absolute truth. One of my completed assignments was 24 pages in length. I would highly recommend this professor.
Ridiculous amount of writing for a 100 level course. Professor was helpful. Textbook is helpful but required as most research was done in external sources.
Instructor wanted 5 essays a week. Crazy do you think i dont have other classes? and you want 5 essays a week. Knocked my grade a bit but didnt offer any reason for doing so.
Great instructor...makes the Discussion Boards fun--not something to stess over. Great guy and personal--he jokes around a lot. I recommend this professor highly....
Yes, there is a LOT of writing for a Bacon class. HOWEVER, if you actually READ HIS INSTRUCTIONS, you'll discover that the writing assignments are actually pretty easy. If you devote 1 hour per day, per week to his class, you'll have NO problems. BTW - he's been there / done that / got the TShirt. Desert One ring a bell?
He is VERY into the history- and uses a lot of role playing as his tactics. There is a lot of writing, but it is not stressful at all and is fairly easy assignments. This class has been very engaging, interesting, and much more fun than I anticipated. He is a grea teacher, although he could grade things a tiny bit quicker.
Very good instructing.Clear and fast responding.
Bacon is a great teacher and learning was made fun. Great guy. Yes, there is a lot of writing. Its going to take more than an hour a week like someone else said. Depending on one's writing ability, Bacon's class could demand quite a bit of time. Do not take his class if you have a lot on your plate. Overall, I would take him again.
Unresponsive to emails and give criticism to written work without stating how it could be better. Would not take another class from again.
Clear, detailed answers are expected.
Prof. Bacon is great. I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot. His discussion boards are enjoyable and engaging. He doesn't fry your brain with tons of tedious coursework. Yes, it's an upperlevel History course so you should expect work but he makes it fun & interactive. He is passionate about the subject & I ended up really learning from him.
Not much required reading for the class but you must do a decent amount of reading on your own for the final research paper. Was an easy grader. Always helpful when questions were asked about what was required.
seems Hard at first, but he's very easy to please. Do the reading, make an informed post, don't get too literary in your essays. That's all it takes. Never had a problem with communication and I emailed back and forth him several times. Def would recommend.
Excellent
An excellent teacher, just a heads up, provide much detail on your DB posts. Tests can be a bit difficult but do-able. I would recommend this teacher to anyone, he provides great feedback and is very polite.
Good teacher. Very clear on assignments and gave good thorough feedback that if followed would improve future work. Would take a class from him again.
Never had as much trouble in any class than I have in this one. Sets standards and grades off of separate standards, which are subjective. Points are deducted at a whim, as much as 20% for a mistake or missing response. Asks follow up questions that, according to the assignment, are not required, but you are expected to answer them. Disappointed.
This class was easy if you do the posting and reading. The final exam was 4 essay questions over 250 words. There are two papers due in this class, but you have a week to do them. When and if you write your posts or your papers, watch out for COMMAS! He will take off points. I would take him again. He is clear on what he wants from you.
Professor Bacon has extremely stringent writing expectations. I have taken HIST under a different Professor in the past at AMU who was not as analretentive about grammar. I followed his example document for how to write "his version" of MLA format and was doc'd tons of points. IT WAS HIS GUIDELINES I WAS FOLLOWING. Would not recommend.
Prof. has clear guidelines on what to expect and there is a lot of writing involved. That being said, if you stay on top of your forum postings (one a week, plus replies, plus a followup from the week before) it is a very interesting class. He also uses MLA style and not APA! WATCH YOU COMMAS!! I got docked 5% for grammar because of commas.
VERY difficult professor. Extremely stringent on grading criteria and late assignments...3 minutes late to be precise (Docked 40 points out of 100...there went my A for the class). I have never written a paper graded less than an A...and I barely got a B with the best paper I wrote in this class. Take this class from another instructor if possible.
Professor Bacon was a wealth of knowledge and made the course very interesting. Although he is very strict on his writing and citation policy, this is college, and you need to be able to write proper papers. Excellent professor, highly recommended and would take a course with him again!
For the 101 classes, the papers are very easy if you follow his directions. I made it hard on myself for the first assignment, but made up for it later on in the term using his inputs. Finishing with an A should not be difficult in his 101 classes.
As many others have commented, Professor Bacon is a stringent grader, but he puts all his expectations out there. I received a dock of 10 points, but emailed, and explained my reasoning and received all 10 points back. Note this is not due to lateness - that is not tolerated!
Although Professor Bacon is stringent on grammer and commas, I absolutely loved taking HIST101 with him. This was partially because of his crazy sense of humor, and partially because of his ability to compel me to think outside of the box, while forming new ideals and opinions on American History. I definitely recommend taking one of his courses!
Professor Bacon was very responsive and clear in his directions. The final paper was 20 pages and had to be in perfect CMS format, but the professor gave good feedback and clear instructions. As long as you follow his guidance, you will get a good grade. I would take another class with this professor.
I think Professor Bacon is just too quick to dock points. checks. I docked me 20 points for not answering a followup question. after I informed him he recredited it back but what if I had not notified him of the error especially since the class had closed? I find him a bit fastidious. He should be teaching English not history.
BAD online instructor. Regularly throws additional(mandatory) criteria onto the wk's assignt's (to include on holidays and wknds) & fully expects you to fulfill said new req's, which BTW were NOT part of the pre-established req's per the syllabus. Sends inappropriate & random TANGENTS, not lectures, through msgs. Find a different teacher.
Mr. Bacon has been my all time favorite professor with APUS. I learned a wealth of history. Yes, he makes you work for your grade, but at least with the work you do, you actually learn. He made the class fun by adding little quotes in his messages and feedback. He is a stickler when it comes to commas, so watch out for that.
Professor Bacon requires you to do college level work in college. It's really not asking a lot. He is a wealth of knowledge and want's you to learn what actually happened, not what the book says. Does give a lot of work compared to some of the other teachers and is a stickler for comma's. As long as you're willing to work you'll do fine.
He was an easy grader. His syllabus was somewhat hard to follow but he would tell you weekly what was expected of you. There was a weekly forum question you have to answer in 250-300 words, he would post a follow up question which you had a week to respond(250-300 words), 3 classmate response (250-200 words) 2 papers and a tough final of 4 essays
This professor has been the absolute worst. I love history, but I despise having Professor Bacon as a professor. He insults his students and brags about himself constantly. He doesn't respond immediately but insists on mini homework assignments every weekend. Being a full time student and holding a full time job is hard enough without surprises.
History is paper heavy, this class is no different. I have had Professor Bacon twice and his classes have been my highest two grades. Do the work and you will be rewarded.
The only Professor I have ever had that took the time to call me at home and discuss my future career plans with me, offering suggestions to explore with my school counselor in the next conversation I had there.
Expect the usual work for a History class. Fair and understanding. Clear instructions, syllabus and guidelines for papers. Participation is a must and encouraged. Overall, great professor, who makes the class interesting, and demonstrates passion for history.
Very understanding and caring instructor. Very fair and response to all emails.
I took Prof Bacon's HIST101 and liked it so much I took HIST102 with him. His forums were relative and insightful. Aside from his strange 1 or 2 "surprise homework assignments" which only took 5-10 minutes, it was a predictable and easily manageable workload in class. He even did a youtube video on how to do papers for him... easy A
He simply made learning history fun while pushing you to dive deeper into areas that are intriguing to learn.
Professor Bacon is a great professor if you are a history buff. Forum posts require a lot of research. There is a lot of writing in this class. I did more writing than I did in my actual writing class! But he is a very fair grader and wants the best for his students. I do recommend him.
Attending History 101 with a different instructor was very easy. With Mr. Bacon, I thought it would have been the same, except he actually participates and wants to engage his students. I learned a lot because the push he gives the students to broaden their knowledge. Does not grade hard but don't think you will get a good grade for substandard wrk
Mr. Bacon is a very straight forward professor. He will grade you by the book. He is VERY knowledgeable when it comes to history. He expects you do complete all work and on time, which is completely fair. He is always there to answer all your questions. If you really want to know about U.S. history this class if for you.
Very intelligent man who cares so much for his students! I've never had a professor who takes so much time to read through each response and get to know his students, especially in an online class. He was always extremely accessible. He's a very fair grader and explains what he expects of each assignment clearly.
Professor Bacon, in my opinion has been an extraordinary instructor for the past eight weeks. He requires a student to read more that just the headlines of a story and grasp the bigger picture on historical events. His follow-up question practices demands efforts above and beyond most instructors, leading to a deeper understanding of his subject.
Professor Bacon was fair; served like he added on to the work load, but this is college, not grade school, do that was expected. I really really appreciated how quickly he got back to me with answers or feedback. I would definitely take him again. I thought he was fair
Expecting typical, memorize significant events-type course; instead was exposed to a heavy, challenging course load, that I didn't mind!! We were forced to question & critically think about our Nation's history. We were challenged to explore more than just the answers; Professor Bacon ignited my appreciation & curiosity to learn more!
Knowledgeable of the subject. Actually makes you think about that time period and conduct specific research. Do not copy and paste, alwayd rewrite every thing in your own words
The professor has quite a bit of knowledge about the subject and can pick out different aspect and explain them in HIGH detail quite easily. He is a fair grader albeit sometimes slow to grade. Two papers and a four question essay final are all easy as long as you read abou the subject. Great class with a great professor!
The Professor is quite engaging and easy to reach by email. There is A TON of homework, three replies to classmates each week, and you will be waiting on grades for two or three weeks. If grades were updated at a more reasonable rate he would get a 5. The final is four 400 word essays worth 25% of your overall grade which really sucks.
Participation is key! Makes history super fun to learn.
Professor Bacon is an amazing instructor; he works with you, understanding, work load was not insane but you know you earned whatever grade is given, and I would highly recommend him to others. Of the three classes I had, his was by far the most enjoyable and most interactive. Thank you Professor B. Take Care, David
Fantastic course work, provides multiple options for forum prompts, feedback is genuine and expands on the topic rather than criticizes your short comings. Overall, a hell of a lot of fun being in this course
Professor Bacon's class was great. It definitely required a lot of reading and research in addition to the weekly reading; however, I learned a lot in this class. The final was 4 essay type questions which did require a decent mount of time to complete but not bad. You want to learn a lot, take this class.
Prof Bacon is one of those people who is a good person but a terrible instructor. His class arrangement is pure chaos, and his responses so convoluted with limerick and nonsense that it's a pain to read what he posts. Just tell me precisely what it is you want, and I'll complete the task. He is literally the most disorganized instructor I've had.
This professor gives ALOT of work. However, this professor does grade fairly and is very accessible with questions or concerns. He is very interactive in the forums and very knowledgeable. This class requires a moderate amount of reading and research. You do learn a lot. Sometimes the professor gets behind in grading( 2 or 3 weeks). Good professor.
Professor Bacon was really amazing. He taught me so much in a class I really wasn't excited to take. I learned so much though!
Professor Bacon is a caring and thorough professional. Great teacher, who will challenge you to learn and research about topics rather than read page after page. Learned a lot more in this method than previous history classes. Multiple question forums with follow ups. Overall, great professor would take again!
I truly enjoyed being a part of Professor Bacons class!
There is nothing positive to say
Pure disorganized chaos. Have to search numerous different areas for due dates and requirements. Spent more time trying to find what is expected and when as opposed to doing the work. Brags about self far too much and all of the things he has seen/done for one to care.
Let me start off by saying this is not your normal online class. There are no quizzes or tests, well the final but it is written. Mr. B is great, he might type long messages, but if you read them all the way through, you will have a better understanding of everything. Read the announcements and keep track of the assignments, you'll be good!
Excellent professor. Definitely learned a lot in his class. He challenges you to think. Gives good, timely feedback.
This Professor is great and I recommend him to any student looking to take a history class that wants to dive into that subject. The only hit I can give on him is that his course can be a little disorganized.. that is why it is important to write EVERYTHING down when you are taking online classes. Haha 10/10 would take his class again
Professor Stephen B. Bacon is an amazing teacher! He is very helpful, very caring but he will make sure you do your work. Lots of reading and writing and his grading system is very thorough & fair. His knowledge in history is very deep. He provides help as much as needed and provides lots of hint & direction.
Easy A if you apply yourself. Weekly forums with 3 peer replies each week make up 50% of your grade. 2 short papers and a 4 essay question final make up the other 50%. Weekly reading not required. Highly recommend this professor.
Professor Bacon's class was fun and engaging. He made a very boring subject interesting.
Great instructor-extremely knowledgeable. Very committed to his work and students. Thank you for the opportunity.
A++++++
Professor gives great feedback. Assignments in class require you to think outside the box having a very creative way to teach. Strongly recommend this course and professor.
One of the best professors I have had as an undergraduate. The content was interesting, his questions engaging, and he provides feedback for every post and assignment that goes beyond the standard good job.
I really enjoyed Mr. B's history 101 class. This was a good class for me to work on my writing style and study habits. There was a decent amount of reading to do in this class but it was manageable.. Mr. B gave great feed back on forum posts and assignments.
Professor Bacon's class touched upon more than the overall run of the mill history class. He gave assignments that made you explore more in-depth studies in the overall lesson and look at parts of history that sometimes get overlooked. I appreciate his style and technique in teaching.
This professor was extremely fair and professional at all times. He was always helpful when need be an always responded to emails in less than a day. I loved taking one of Professor Bacons classes. I highly recommend taking one if you actually want to learn. Definitely not an easy A so be prepared to actually engage the community.
Professor Bacon gave great leeway to me in selecting the topics for my papers, which I greatly appreciated. His followup questions were multi-faceted, requiring more than just a cursory effort. I felt inspired to put forth far more than the minimum, and Professor Bacon seemed to recognize and appreciate the quality of the work.
*NOTE* This review is for the AMU class MILH202, not for MILH222. The MILH202 was not an option.* A little different, very informal in the forums, feedback, ect. But this does not compromise his professionalism, or ability to teach the content effectively. Take his class if you want a unique experience. Really nothing negative to say.
I found Mr. B a very good teacher who helps students involve themselves with history more than most teachers usually do. Attending this class definitely requires the student to dig into researching interesting questions for a wanted grade.
Great instructor, it wasn't the normal multiple choice quiz and click on through. Very in-depth follow up questions that make you dig in the background of events or people. A little frustrating when you hit a wall, but made you look at various other sources and peel back the layers.
Awesome, Straightforward expectations, Keeps it fresh, and you learn something
Mr. B was a overall good professor. He grades a little tough on the 2 major assignments you have. You have a lot of reading not exactly from the textbook, but websites and other criteria to make sense of the discussions. Other than that I would take him again.
During this class I found myself wanting more. Professor Bacon is a man who entices his class to go above the norm. His ability to provide his students with valuable insight lures the student into the realm of history. Professor Bacon manages to place you in the time period, discovering for yourself more about our often exaggerated history. 10/10 .
Professor Bacon is a professor I would emulate if I was a teacher. His ability to place you in the time and in the circumstance of history is exciting, Professor Bacon thinks outside of the box, his charisma, expertise, and knowledge of history are incredible. Professor Bacon takes the student to the basics and teaches the right way. 10/10
Mr. B is a great professor, he sends daily emails or at least tries to send them daily to where he will send fun facts or information that us students can use. Gives great feedback and works with you should you need help.
Very professional and makes you feel like you are in that time period and gives you great feed back that makes you really think.
This instructor requires way too much for discussions and very hard to work with. Treated me as if I were a history major when Im not. Would not take this class
Used Rate My Professor to make the decision to take his course and it was pretty spot on! Great teacher who believes in good communication and punctuality with assignments. He expects you to do your part, but you will learn a lot in return.
Mr. Bacon did a great job at engaging the students. He has extremely long, elaborate responses during the weekly discussion. History can be extremely boring but Mr. Bacon does a pretty good job at just making it a little more lively. He does grade the 2 assignments difficult so do not skimp on those.
Professor Bacon was a very enjoyable professor. The follow-up questions asked in response to the weekly discussions were very fun! He always made sure that his questions made you think and research a subject. I learned so many things through the follow-up questions that, otherwise, I would not have learned. -Bradley
History 101 class has been my favorite online class so far. Professor Bacon makes the class fun and engaging. I really enjoyed researching and answering follow up questions he would post in our discussions. He always provided the class with multiple topics to research allowing us to focus on subjects that peaked our interest. I learned so much!
Growing up, I hated history subjects. I never really liked it, to me it was too much to read and that was not my forte. I did have some amazing teachers growing up in high school. When I applied for this class, my goal was just to pass but Prof. Bacon was amazing! He really made me learn a lot! I enjoyed the class.
Prof Bacon is an excellent teacher. After taking his online class if ever given the chance I'd like to take a class in person. His feedback on assignments is in-depth and he likes to keep it fun with his comments and responses. Pay attention to the discussion board each post requires 3 responses. If you have questions he is always available.
Professor Bacon has a great passion for teaching and really goes the extra mile to educate his students. He requires more than the status quo of effort in his class and holds his students accountable for the quality of their work. Overall, I really respected his commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication.
Mr. Bacon was by far the best professor I had so far at AMU. He was engaged, helpful, fair grader; has a passion for history, and it shows. Goes beyond textbook to teach the period covered, making it interesting. Only negative I can think of is a lot of writing. 3 peer responses to a post, plus a follow up post most weeks, plus more, lot more.
I really enjoyed the class. MILH202 is the Survey of American Military History and the Professor clearly has both deep expertise and a strong passion for the subject matter. He made the class enjoyable and, despite the workload, I found it a lot of fun. Would definitely take another class of his.
Mr. B is a great instructor. He challenges his students to do more than just "the bare minimum." His follow-up questions each week would unlock the door to history, and it was up to you, the student, to walk through. There was definitely a lot of busywork, but overall, it was fun to dig deeper into different historical portions.
