very helpful!
Don't ask questions, we did and we regretted it. He likes a complacent class. I corrected him on his math in calculating the averages and I regret that now.
EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM STUNK!
He is very helpful and nice. He helps you to be prepared for the exams, but his exams are rather difficult. And the final is very diffcult and often contains unexpected material.
Great professor. Very helpful and made the course interesting.
Everything in this class was unfair. His tests didnt cover anything that we covered in class and hardly anyone made a good grade in his class. I wouldnt suggest ANYONE take this class.
Sometimes he comes grumpy to a class, other that that he is OK professor.
horrible, horrible, horrible!!! He didn't test us on anything he had gone over in class and his tests were like brain teasers. You actually had analyze each question. I will never take another class with him ever again.
the tests do not reflect what is taught in class. He should only teach graduate level classes. He made my life a living hell for a whole semester. Other than that he is really nice and personable.
this man was so hard. He made no sence and when you asked him a question he gave an answer that was off the wall. The test were nothing like the study guide.DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR.
He is somewhat funny.
Nice, nice man. His 'lectures' R boring (understandable because it's Botany & it's MAINLY slides,he just talk about them) & a bit confusing. His tests R comprehensive, so his lectures don't help 100%. You have 2 STUDY more & know most of the concepts to make an A. Luckily I passed w/ a B.
When I took his class he was an excellent teacher. To the other whiners who marked him down: don't forget you're in college, Not your crappy high school anymore. He really made a boring class interesting.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He is the worst biology teacher. he is unclear and when you ask him a question you can't understand what he is saying. he is very boring and that also makes it hard to pay attention. he teaches almost like he doesn't care.
Mediocre professor. He doesn't do a very good job of explaining course material. If you can help it, take someone else for this course.
I thought he was pretty cool. He gave out study guides and was willing to talk to the students after class if they still don't understand the material.

Very knowledgable, can explain things in many ways
very helpful
HE'S HARD!!! yeah he gives out study guides but the stuff on the study guides arent really on the test!!! especially genetics!!! VERY HARD... if u have him.... good luck! many long nights of studying!!!!
Explain topics with different examples, did give study guides that was some help but all info was from his lectures, none from the book....
Very hard, does not explain things well, test are ridiculously hard, do not take him!!
He is VERY hard but does curve at the end and if you go in and ask for help he is very willing to help!
The class was difficult, but he was helpful
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!! If u value your GPA at all, i repeat DO NOT TAKE!!!
Brilliant man. Really does a good job of making science interesting, though his delivery of the material can be a little bland. Very helpful and forgiving. ESPECIALLY in his lab. Just take notes and study ALL material covered. His pre-test are only good starting points to study, but they DONT cover all the material.
Dr. Banks is a great teacher, but a little hard to understand. I took both bios 120 and bios 120 lab with him. The lecture was easy, but the lab was made way harder than it should have been. The weekly quizzes are extremely tricky. Half of my class dropped the course. I would not take him for lab, but the lecture was fine.
really smart guy, but sometimes has trouble getting things through. his class is not that hard as long as you study. He will PROBLEY BORE you to death, but if you go to him after class he can usually help you.
Took him for botany. Great class. Easy. Study the slides and make flash cards and group everything together. Study the pre-test. Bought the book, but didn't use it.
He is a very helpfull professor.
Only tests over material covered in class. Powerpoints put online. Provides study guides. Tests are not terribly difficult although you must study. You cannot just show up for tests and pass his class. Many drop out. He wears the strangest clothes. He's British. Do not ask him a question that has already been asked. Nice guy.
Dr Banks is definitly an interesting teacher. He's British and I think that his accent it really cool. He reads off the slides so make sure to study them and read the corresponding chatpers and do the questions at the end of the sections(it will help). His tests are not that bad. DO NOT be late for his class, because he might not let you in!
Dr. Banks reads straight from the slides (which he posts on Moodle) and offers "pretests" which are helpful but don't cover everything; if you want to do well on the test, USE THE E-BOOK PRACTICE TESTS! Most of his 'curveball' questions come from these! Easy class if you can get into it.
wow... thought it was gunna be easy, but its just so much broad info. powerpoints are boring and so are lectures because its not in much detail yet.. pretest are given some, but test can be tricky, alot of low scores in my class... READ EVERY POWERPOINT!!!
Dr. Banks is a nice guy and probably a good teacher but he wasnt in BIO110. This is bc this course is a ridicous "weeding out" course. The entirity of the course is so broad that its difficult. Classes are extremely boring bc all he does is read the slides. ugg...the sole purpose of this class is to inimidate!!! And the final is 150 ?s.
If you are a biology major then i highly recommend you get him to like you. I slept thru the whole course but he loves me anyways because i could always answer a question he threw at me. Dont attempt his class if youre dumb, it wont work.
Do not take this man for Lecture!! Get him for lab, but NOT LECTURE. His test seem easy, but when you recive your grade it reveals other wise. I never had a problem with Sciences until I man into the class!1
DONT take him for the lecture. In lab he's okay. There is a quiz every week over the previous lab..and they are a little challenging..asking him ?s kinda makes him mad..he's hardly ever in the lab though so if we have ?s this semester we are forced to ask the lab assistant, who knows NOTHING about biology.
does not explain well. tries to confuse you. better off taking ANYONE else!
if you like biology dont take him. he talks way over your head. alot of info and very broad. tests aren't what you study. he can be rude at times and funny too.don't ask questions he don't have the time or patience and you're just as confused before you asked. a wasted semster i was really looking forward to biology until now
Dr. Banks is one of the most interesting Biology teachers I've had. If you really love Biology and you're not afraid to put in some effort, take his class. Beware of his exams. This is how he "weeds" students out of the class, get the bad out of the good. Studying just the book, power points, and pretests will not cover everything on his exams.
If you are willing to put in the effort he will help you. All semester our materials were flawed due to human error but our group stuck it out and he saw we were trying. He helped us when we needed it. I tried really hard and lots of ppl got C's i ended up with an A but I really wanted it. Study hard before quizzes and follow inst on lab report
He is a JERK! Not nice at all. Study the book, mastering biology website, and lecture notes. You never know where he is going to get his test questions from! Try to take Dr. Gossete instead!
He's not as hard as everyone on here is making him out to be. Most of these people sound like idiots anyway. HELLO, this is college level biology! Did you NOT think you were going to have to read something? Did you NOT think you were going to have to study??? Study a bit and pass him easily. Study like you want it and easily make an A.
very hard teacher! his tests are basically impossible. our class average was a 60% Also had him for the Lab gives quizes every week which are challenging, you have to understand all the equations without him teaching you them! and that is the majority of his grade.
Tests are pretty tough but the class isnt that bad
He is the worst professor at this school. He could not teach his way out of a kindergarten class, much less college. He is very smart, but that dosent help students. He curves a lot because he cannot teach. His lab class is currently ruining my day every Mon from 2-5. I am begging LSUS to get rid of him on the next budget cut.
He is an awesome teacher. Will answer any question given. Test are kind of hard but that is normal for college. Just need to read the book, read the power points, and take notes.
HARD! I can study forever and still not make a good grade on his exams. Hes really nice and awsome to listen to but hes VERY tough!!!! Try not to take him, or buzgo.
He was a really nice teacher and it was very easy to understand him. I really thought I knew the material until I took his tests. His tests are rediculous but he curves alot at the end of the semester. Id rather take banks than Buzgo anytime!!!
Dr. Banks is a fantastic teacher. His lecture tests are challenging, but an A is possible if you study hard. Although, I did not enjoy the lab very much. The quizzes were very hard and instruction was confusing. However, if you put forth effort, Dr. Banks does notice and will gladly help you. Overall, would absolutely take him again. Learned a lot!
He is an awesome man who is as brilliant as they come. I really enjoyed his classes and lectures. He will help you in anyway possible. I would recommend taking him for any course you can take. There is nothing bad that I can say about this man. He knows his stuff. All you have to do is put in effort and you will do great in his classes.
worst professor i ever had at lsus. monotone, accent and his tests are ridiculous
Great professor!Yes, 110 is challenging, but an A is possible if you make it a priority. He curved slightly, but don't base your grade on it. I found is BIO120L to be fairly difficult, but he tries to get you to think outside of the box which is what college is about. Would take any chance I get. VERY helpful professor. He wants you to do do well.
Had Bio110 and Bio120L. Love this teacher! He is engaging and VERY helpful. If you are having a hard time just go to his office hours and he will be HAPPY to help you.Read the chapters in book as well as the PP notes for tests to do well. He notices effort and attendance and rewards both. He really cares about his students.Would happily take again!
Dr. Banks is an awesome teacher. His lectures are interesting, his tests are challenging and his labs are confusing. An A is possible if you put forth some effort and study. If you are not very smart, I would probably take biology at BPCC. This class is not for the weak of mind.
Dr. Banks is a great professor. He is extremely helpful for those SEEKING help. Helpful to earn A: Study & UNDERSTAND the clickers,+pretest,+ read chapters a couple times. You'll do fine, go to him with problems! If you're like I used to be, lazy and just want to pass without doing anything = you WILL fail this class. Just a heads up.
AVOID AT ALL COST! RUDE RUDE RUDE MAN! Very Unprofessional called me Stupid in front of the whole class. Never checked my paper just assumed it was wrong;wrote Xs all the way down it.When confronted about his mistake did not take it lightly so I dropped the class. Quizzes do not cover anything we talked about. No help at all!
I never took a class by him that I didn't struggle through. His classes are VERY challenging. But Dr. Banks is an excellent man. He is so very helpful. If he knows you are trying, he makes it a point to help you raise your grades.
This class is designed as a GPA bust.. For a 1credit class, its ridiculous. More work than BIO120 which I made a high A, but got a B in lab?... It's a joke, but you have to take it. So take my advice, and do NOT take this class lightly.
be sure to double check grading. inconsistent with grading. study ahead of time.
Not sure about his lower levels, but Anthropology was AWESOME, informative, and fun to study for. Tests could be difficult... IF YOU DON'T STUDY.
Do not take him for anything. He is super smart but he cannot accurately explain stuff. He gets super confusing. His whole class is based on 3 tests that are super hard. Do not need the book, but his power points are ridiculous.
AWFFFUUULLLLLL. If you want a professor that will work with you, do NOT take Banks. He is very intelligent, but you take a quiz very week on what you learned before and the information that is on the quiz is not gone over in class. Also, he leaves right in the middle of class every time to go do personal business and leaves you with his TA.
hate him. worst teacher ever. do NOTTTT take him at all if all possible. if you don't come to class, you will not pass. if you don't study and read between the lines of his lectures or basically have mind reading capability, you will not pass. good luck if you have to take him, but take all other possible teachers besides Banks or Buzgo.
Great professor! He genuinely cares and takes pride in his students and University.
Like everyone is saying, HIS LABS ARE RIDICULOUS! Every lab there is a quiz, and let me tell you his "10 Point" quiz ARE NOT EASY. He expects you to use "Metacognition" A term which means think hard about what you're thinking. I MEAN ITS THINKING, how can the way we think be counted as a right answer? Overall, his labs are fun, but quiz is hard.
Everyone on here who says he's "hard" are lying. I have went to everyone of his lecture classes and I've made a B and above on all the tests. The test are rather hard if you don't do studying outside of his class. The lab quizzes were kind of hard so you really have to make sure you can do the math back words and forward. GREAT professor and cares
He gives one big writing assignment on enzymes. More than willing to answer questions and help where he can. Attendance is a must to have a chance to do well. Banks cares about the students individual success, and he treats students like adults. He has confidence that with enough work, any student can excel. Very approachable and easy to talk to.
His powerpoints were loaded with all the information needed to do well. He's willing to answer questions and really cares that you get it. Tests were long (Especially the final) but I never felt unprepared. He's hilarious and desires students to be the best they can be, great encourager. Well read, he seems to knowing everything about anything.
Professor Banks is a great professor but you have to work for your grade. He uses stories of himself as a young child during lectures which sometimes has you wondering what does this have to do with what we are talking about. Tests are hard if you don't study or wait too late! Be prepared to work and you should be fine.
Very knowledgeable and nice man. Study the powerpoints & show up to class for clicker questions and you should be fine but be sure to drink your coffee because otherwise zzzzzz....
If given the choice between taking hot coals and listening to one of this guy's lectures again, I would take the hot coals. When confronted on a plagiarism issue and asked for the attendance sheet to show proof of attendence to the board, claims he is a professor, not a police officer.
Says he won't put material on the tests that he covers in class, but HE DOES. I made an A on the first test and an F on the second. Half the material on the second test was not covered in class. Read ahead and study nonstop. Avoid Banks for 120 if at all possible.
Love Dr. Banks. He makes sure he correlates things you are learning with real life scenarios. You can tell he's passionate about biology and his students. I always see him talking with students in the hall and around campus. His classes are not hard, you just can't be a 'night before' studier. I felt like he was very encouraging.
He is a very nice person, but that's all the good stuff I can say about him. He goes on ridiculous tangents, reads STRAIGHT from ppts, you need to be there for clicker questions though, and his tests are INSANELY hard for no good reason. He curves a little at the end of the semester so that's a plus. Super boring. I hope to never take him again.
This class is based mostly on quizzes. The labs were pretty straightforward and easy and he was there to help. The quizzes were hard and didn't line up with the lectures. If you're a bad test/quiz taker then you might want to avoid this class.
Knowledgeable and caring, genuinely wants you to succeed. It's a practical lab, you have to be there to do the work, after explaining the concept in lecture he demonstrates how to do the lab before you do it. Quizzes are just about the previous lab. As an older British guy his humor is like a british comedy so if that's not your thing bring coffee.
Great teacher, he explains everything clearly and thoroughly.
Very good teacher, who is accessible outside of class. Very lecture heavy and use of in class questions that count towards a quiz grade using a clicker. Loves to tell stories that relate to the lecture.
This class definitely calls you to challenge yourself. It's not a class where you can sit back and expect Dr. Banks to do all of your work for you but at the same time, if you ever need help Dr. Banks is more than willing to meet with you and help you understand the information.
If you make one small mistake like messing up on your unit but everything else is right he gives you a zero
Great guy, my only issue is that his tests were impossible to pass and the class was super test heavy, so if you messed up on one, you messed up the entire class. He gave us a study guide once, but like only 3 out of 30 questions on it were on the test. Very vague about what's going to be on the tests. Wouldn't recommend unless you're psychic.
Dr. Banks is a great professor, however the class seems to be geared towards premed and biology majors as he takes this class quite seriously. Wouldn't recommend 120 with him if you aren't a science major and you need the credit, but the entire biology department are all hard a*ses, so your choices are limited. Grade is clicker questions and tests.
Dr. Banks has a rep for being a difficult professor and his tests are brutal. He made this course so much more difficult than it would have been with Dr. Burden. He would emphasize stuff that would not show up on the test. I took this course hoping it would be my easy one, but it was harder than all my other courses. Really disappointed. Avoid him!
The only grades are the lecture exams and he requires you to have a wide conceptual knowledge. He is very fair on his tests and will throw out questions that he did not like after an exam and still give you the points for all correct answers, so it ends up boosting the grade. He is very caring and will accommodate his students
His test are the only grades and they are based off of the powerpoints but the powerpoints are crazy long and full of information. You are expected to know everything. I made an A so it is possible but it is not an easy A at all. Requires a lot of work. Also, he doesn't answer emails.
I really admire Dr. Banks. Fantastic lecturer who does really care for his students. I've taken several of his courses. The material is tough at times, but he is always willing to meet outside of class to clarify a concept. A wonderful person to know and I enjoyed our conversations in our time there. Also a great musician, saw him some time ago.
Tests are extremely difficult.
You don't have to have the lab workbook, he provides the info for you to print. He doesn't take up the lab papers. You get tested each week on the previous week's lab, which is based on the PowerPoint on Moodle even though he doesn't stress them. The questions come directly off of them. You do one lab report - very clear criteria.
Dr Banks lectures & PowerPoints can be quite heavy. Has a lot of info all crammed in slides so it's hard to break down infor But he is one of the most caring profs here.TopHat is required & he uses exam questions from it. Curves & is willing to accommodate if u talk to him. Read ahead & don't fall behind & is better to contact in person.
We had 12 speakers, each one you had to write from what they said or from the PowerPoint. SAVE YOUR NOTES. There is only 1 exam (the final exam), so the notes you have taken will help you a lot.
Only graded on tests (4 for the semester). Tests are difficult and lectures have a ton of information. Gives study guides for tests, 1st two were very broad, the last 2 have been more narrow. Tests on the photos in the PowerPoint - study all of them. LOTS of test questions. Our shortest test had 85 questions. Final is NOT cumulative.
He constantly talks down to students who are not doing that well in his class. He is always off track and study guides don't line up with the tests. He usually curves the test, but not by much. Definitely an egotistical man that loves to talk about himself. Don't take his lab either. He doesn't explain anything before having to do the lab.
Tough course with challenging tests, but helpful professor. Utilize unstuckstudy, PowerPoint review, and open communication to succeed. Attendance mandatory, no textbook required.
Dr Banks does not explain our labs before we do them. We are given very little instructions or guidance before the lab. When students ask him questions, he often gives half a response and is derogatory. Many of our original students in the class withdrew because of the difficulty of the course.
Dr Banks is an amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable and cares for his students. His lectures are packed with tons of info. He even gives study guides for his tests. You will see some questions on the test that are hard and you have never seen. However, if a majority of the class misses a question, then he will remove it. He removes roughly 7
Take Gissendanner. Sits and talks about either the meds he is on or if you're lucky- the actual lecture topic. His slides look like book pages and are very hard to read. At the end of the semester he put a random grade in, did not make aware to the class. Test include random things you have never seen before. Thinks more ?s on tests the better.
He insults students being American as if the English are superior. He also insults how we're Gen Z. He redirects your questions with follow the directions on the paper or an insult about being Gen Z or American. He is witty when it comes to insulting students instead of giving directions. He's lengthy in lecture, but doesn't provide help in lab.
Dr. Banks is the best professor I have ever had. If you show interest in the material, any interest at all, he takes notice. He is a very intelligent professor and knows how to communicate his knowledge to his students. He curves his tests by removing questions if a majority missed them. He also gives study guides that cover a good portion of test
Prepare for a ten question quiz every week. He doesn't give partial credit. You would be better off coming to class for the quizzes, leaving before the lab, and studying it at home. You need to do so even if you stay for the lab anyway if you want even a chance at passing the quizzes. The only good thing about Mr. Banks is that he is retiring.
exams are so long.
