comprehensive lectures
Great lectures ... exams take you by surprise. Good sense of humour.
Prof. Baron has great lectures, they're really organized. His assigments are manageable, and the tests aren't that bad. He has a wry sense of humour that adds a lot of colour to some of the material.
BORING
you can tell the guy does interesting research but his assignments were as lame as his michael bolton appearance

Boring, boring, boring....I already took a version of this course and my mark dropped 20%. I just couldn't stay with the lectures they were so one-dimensional, it was like Groundhog Day..again and again and again...UGGH!
Baron was great! Lectures were easy to follow and suprisingly fun with his dry sense of humor and the odd story. Managable course load as well.
Such a great class... it's too bad someone ruined it for us all and complained about his sharing recipes. Stupid jokes that are hilarious, great speed and concise overheads.

Baron was great in this course - his assignments force you to put your fear of stats aside, which seems to be pretty uncommon in a lot of non-required courses (and makes you feel like the 1.5 credits you spent on stats/methods weren't a total waste of time)
I love Baron!!! He is such a nice prof.
What a great man!
Anyone ever seen Ferris Beuler's day off? Beuler?....Beuler? He's just SO boring!!!
He's okay.... yes boring.... Kind of arbitrary midterms .... not for everyone
You think it would be tough to butcher such an interesting subject but Baron does it very well.... Amazing potentital for a great class yet it was so bad. extremely unfair marking on the term paper with no guidelines beforehand as to how it is to be written... absolutely no room for developing your own arguments in this course which to me is absurd
Has good lectures slides with extensive diargrams and examples..... which he leaves on the over head for a milisecond then DOESN'T put on WebCT. I wish he wouldn't talk in a monotone. Provides adequate examples and clear points. Not good at answering questions in class. Overall very strange man.
Great prof
Doesn't use moodle, doesn't clarify assignments, mostly tests.
Baron is a legend
Baron is a nice man; however, his class is not for everyone. Assistance is available if you seek it out. He is very monotone and your grades will be based on 3 multiple choice tests, along with one paper analysis. Understand what you are signing up for as the content is interesting but the delivery is not.
He doesn't post content online so you have to attend lecture or get complete notes from a friend. The test content is 50/50 lecture/textbook material, so you can't do without either one. The assignment left no room for individual thought, and the tests are all (poorly written) multiple choice questions. Lectures never go in-depth and are monotone.
Dr. Baron is incredibly knowledgeable. He gives great lectures. Really knows his stuff and is a top scholar. Privilege to take a course from this man. He is serious but has a good sense of humor and cares about the success of his students. Recommend any course he teaches.
Great course. Knowledgeable prof. I learned a lot. Highly recommend any course he teaches. Good value.
Really interesting course material. Dr. Baron is knowledgeable and encouraging. I loved his course (I took 2 courses with him and enjoyed them both). I learned more in his courses than in many of my Sociology courses.
Professor Baron delivers terrific lectures. They are packed with knowledge. His lectures do the work for you -- it's easier to understand the textbook when he makes sense of the criminology theories, critiques and policies. His grading is fair, even generous. Show up to class, take notes, and you can succeed.
I took his course a few years ago. I'm now a criminal lawyer -- this course was a change-maker for me. His course inspired me. This guy is knowledgeable and delivers fantastic lectures. Show up, do the readings and you can get good grades. Of course if you want a fluff course void of any knowledge -- best shop elsewhere.
I consider myself lucky to have taken 2 courses with Dr. Baron. He's incredibly knowledgeable and encourages students to really understand and apply criminology theory. He's super helpful and patient - and is willing to give students a lot of time when they need help. I'm entering law school and plan to study criminal law.
Simple formula: attend class, read the textbook, and you'll do fine. Baron's lectures are clear, with useful examples, and connected to the readings. It's easy to succeed. I suspect he even boosts class grades on tests. Straightforward, serious, clear prof. Also super helpful if you go talk to him.
lol this class makes u work for it. if you skip a lecture, ur screwed.
Really enjoyed his class. Lectures are clear and readings are not onerous. His lectures so well structured I felt prepared writing the tests. I don't mind going to class -- I'm paying for my education. He's also patient and helpful outside class. Great prof!
Baron is clear, knowledgeable, and well organized in his lectures. He considers students -- going at a pace that allows us to take notes. He conveys criminology theories in a systematic way with helpful examples. I found him tremendously helpful outside class time. He's always available to help. Very nice man.
Lectures are well organized, clear and Prof Baron goes at a reasonable pace -- finally a lecturer that thinks about students trying to take notes. He's a quieter guy and really helpful when I visited him at his office for study tips. Course content interesting and Prof Baron cares about student learning. Recommend any class he teaches.
Dr. Baron is a terrific professor: gives clear well organized lectures, is a fair grader, and is approachable outside class for assistance. He's in his office 9-5 Monday to Friday & I've even seen him on campus during weekends. He is always willing to help students. Quiet guy - but super instructor.
Fantastic prof. Knowledgeable, helpful, interesting, made classes engaging and encouraged class discussion. Took the time to meet students one-on-one to give us feedback on our presentations. Comments on essays constructive. Nice man. Really cares. Wish I'd taken more courses with him.
Lectures are engaging and easy to follow. Dr. Baron provides thorough knowledge on leading theories in criminology. Lecture style is calm and clear. Other profs run classes like a magic show or comedy act. I can go to Cirque de Soleil or a comedy club for that. His class was interesting and inspired me to enter a career in social work or law.
The Professor that is sure to challenge you! Difficult assignments, but you learn the most from them. Relies a lot on class participation and presentations. Really challenges you to think critically about criminological concepts. Easily approachable outside the classroom, but quite intimidating in class. Hard class, excellent learning experience.
I learned more in this course than any other sociology course at Queen's. He is more the caliber of teacher in Psych, Econ or Physics. Very knowledgeable. Lectures clear and systematic. One of the few profs you'll find on campus 9-5 all week and always willing to help. Nice man. Quiet but very helpful.
I wish I had taken more courses with Dr. Baron. He is one of the best professors at Queen's -- He is knowledgeable and lectures are clear, well structured, and with reference to top level research studies. Seminar discussion time is productive and he challenges us to think - not what, but how. Smart man, great course.
Dr. Baron is what I hoped university professors would be: knowledgeable, organized, clear, good humored, understanding, challenging, curious. His lectures clarify readings and build connections. I better understand criminology theory and policy implications. Workload was reasonable. Show up to class and he makes it all make sense. Easy to do well.
Simple formula: come to class. His expectations are clear. I learned so much just by coming to lecture and doing the readings. I didn't have to study hard. He is so clear, even pace, and his sense of humor is subtle but real funny. Unlike so many profs, he's available outside class and very helpful. I loved his course. Such a nice man.
Dr. Steve Baron is the smartest, most engaging prof I've had in my 2 degrees. Every class he helped us to analyze, critique & extend research studies that we read. I learned more in this course about theory, methods & policy than in any other course. He's patient, understanding & has a good sense of humor. I'm so pleased I took his class.
Professor Baron gives clear lectures. The content just makes everything make sense. Readings are interesting. I felt well prepared going into tests. He's really helpful to students needing accommodations and gave useful guidance on writing assignments. Really nice man. I looked forward to his lectures (he has a sense of humor too).
I learned so much in this class. Dr. Baron's lectures are well organized and clear. Once I figured out coming to class makes all the difference my second test grade went up hugely! Do the readings and pay attention in class -- and it's an easy formula for success. He's funny too and provides good examples to help you remember points.
I took the course last year. I got 96%. Showed up to class took notes and read the textbook. Baron's lectures outline key points and situate readings in bigger picture. Readings just a chapter a week. 3 quizzes and short essay (7 pages). Show up to class and it's easy. He gives lots of time to students needing help . Serious, quiet, nice guy.
Baron's multiple choice quizzes were extremely hard and this is coming from a student who attended every single class and did all of the required readings. There was one major essay that was not "short" as other reviews have mentioned. After speaking to numerous people in the class his grading was beyond difficult and unreasonable. Avoid if you can
The best thing about his class is that it is over. His lectures were terribly put together, he did not use onQ, had three absolutely poorly written quizzes, and an unbelievably generalized essay. By far the worst professor I have had thus far. Not worth your time or money, avoid his class at all costs!
I really enjoyed Baron's deviance/criminology course. I'm averaging 94% and one of my friends averaged 98% on the tests. The readings are light - one textbook chapter per week. Lectures are organized. He gave direction on the essay (a short 7-10 pg paper) in class. He's always around to help students. I can't complain. It was an easy A+!
I learned a lot in this course. Baron's lectures are comprehensive and he highlights what's important in readings. I bombed the first quiz (I skipped classes & some readings). I started showing up & doing the work -- got 88 on quiz 2 and A on essay. I learned some study habits I missed 1st yr.
I liked that there was not a lot of work in the course -- 3 quizzes & a mini essay (7 pages), no final exam. Reading 1 chapt/week. I like his lecture style - clear, serious, lots of examples. But I'm interested to learn about the subject. If you want light/fluffy there's plenty socy courses.
Don't do it. The class I was looking forward to most, and ended up hating. It's as if Baron is pulling teeth while lecturing--watching paint dry is more interesting. He used trick questions for the tests, gave barely any direction to the TAs or students on the essay rubric, and had 0 interest in helping students during his office hours. BAD teacher
Did not seem to care for the success of students, did not present himself as a resource very well, came off extremely unapproachable when confronted with questions. Instructions for paper not delivered clearly. Overall I felt really discouraged as I would otherwise love the content. sad.
Baron was extremely unreasonable with his MC tests and the final paper. While no final cumulative exam sounds enticing, it's a trap. The MC tests were full fo trick questions so even if you did the readings and attended class you could still be very unsuccessful. One of my lowest marks in uni so far despite the amount of work I put in.
Really enjoyed this course. I got so much out of it. Professor Baron is knowledgeable, an expert in street violence and crime, encourages us without judgement, really helpful as I prepared my essay. He ran a terrific seminar - good discussion. We all learned so much. My fav course in Sociology at Queen's.
Easy course. Show up to lectures & read single chapter/week. Lectures detailed - so take good notes. Tests fair, even easy. Way easier than my psyc courses. I liked that there is no final exam.
I liked that he speaks at a decent pace so I can take notes without panicking. His powerpoint slides are not colorful, but the outline is there. I found the 3 quizzes and short 7 page assignment a reasonable workload. Readings light. My first A+ at university.
I learned a lot. Dr. Baron actually teaches in class instead of having us all do group work. He explains criminological theories clearly and with useful examples. He also gives hints on tests and expectations for mini assignment. Fair prof who has standards. For easy-peasy light-fare courses, there are plenty others in sociology.
Only prof I know who is in his/her office 9-5 weekdays and willing to help students. He gave me a lot of his time and his advice helped me to improve in other courses too. I liked the course content and format with quizzes instead of scary big exam.
I picked the course as a fluff elective and discovered it required more effort, but I also got more out of this course than I expected. Not a bird-course elective, but interesting subjects. Recommend for anyone interested in criminology and law.
Interesting course and good foundation for advanced crime courses. I liked that the prof lectured at a reasonable pace so I could take good notes. Super helpful after class and in office hours. I did have to show up and study but I got an A- and my friend A+ who is keen. Not hard if you work at it.
Engaging course. Dr. Baron guided class discussion and made us think each class. I got more out of this course than any other 4th year class. He gave a lot of time outside class helping us with essays and presentations. Was willing to write reference letters for me and others in the class. I appreciated all his help.
I thoroughly enjoyed SOCY275. So much so I've registered in SOCY389 (Gender, Crime and Law) and plan to take 400 level deviance/crime/law courses.
I really enjoyed SOC275. I liked it so much I decided to change majors from Psyc to Sociology. Also doing the law certificate now.
Enjoyed SOCY275. Tests are 50% lecture 50% readings, so be sure to attend class. Motivated me to take more criminology/criminal justice courses.
Good course. I liked having 3 in-class tests rather than one big scary final exam. Straightforward -- tests are 50% lecture-based, 50% textbook. Not a lot of assigned readings and short essay (under 10 pages). Can't complain.
I liked learning about criminological theories. I decided to change majors to Soc because of this course. Lectures were interesting.
I learned a lot in this course. I'm interested in a career in law, policing or corrections, so I appreciated the professor's clear explanations of criminology theories. He included summaries of major studies in the field and policy applications. Just the foundation I was looking for.
I found this to be a challenging course. By that I mean I realized after the first test that I needed to get my but to class and crack open the textbook. The course is demanding, lectures clear, and I found the prof to be helpful. But it's not the usual sociology bird course, that's for sure.
I learned a lot. Good course. Enjoyed prof's lecture style. Recommend it.
One of the most interesting courses I have taken at university. Lectures are well structured and the professor provides concrete examples. He explained concepts carefully and did not rush through material -- but there was plenty material. Don't skip lectures -- he puts readings in context and makes writing tests easier.
Dr. Baron gives clear organized lectures. Readings made more sense after attending class. He gives lots of hints about tests. And he was always willing to sit down with students and help after class and in his office. I learned more in this course than in my other 200-level courses (combined). Good foundation for criminology students.
Clear and detailed lectures. Serious scholar. Nice man.
Not only does he not use OnQ but he also has really weird ALL multiple choice exams and the questions are mostly tricks and weird wording to make the content look unfamiliar... I basically knew all the content & still found myself confused during tests as everything seemed unfamiliar like it was the same content but written by a different prof
The description of this class sounds interesting but by week 4 I realised I had made a huge mistake. The multiple choice questions are worded awkwardly and make me second guess myself all the time. There are three tests and one essay, it's all based on old theories (boring) - don't learn much besides that. Also doesn't use onQ....
Prof Baron teaches the core criminology theories and the course is a great foundation for upper level criminal justice, policing and law courses. He really knows his stuff. He is soft spoken but goes at a reasonable pace so I can take good notes. I found the MC tests pretty straightforward and the essay assignment not too long. Good course.
I really liked the professor and how he teaches the course. He brings new interesting material to class every day. I enjoyed learning criminology theories and considering policy interventions. Prof is a serious scholar and is concerned that students learn and are treated fairly. I plan to take his youth and crime course next.
Lecture basically just read through scripts and definitions. Very plain and sleep-inducing. He could just give us the lecture notes and let us memorize everything in-class and in textbook. Exams are consisted of MP questions, which basically let you choose between tricky synonyms of course concepts. It's easy to get confused by similar theories.
Prof Baron was extremely unhelpful and came across as uninterested via email, even when asking standard questions such as when to expect feedback. I understand that classes with 200+ students may be challenging as a prof, but all exams were consistently hard, aimed at tricking students, and no amount of studying and reading ever prepared me enough.
This course is straightforward. Prof gives clear delivery of lectures -- good pace so it's possible to keep up with notes. He has a subtle sense of humor so pay attention. He is always at his office and willing to help students. Quiet guy but really nice. A+ is possible - just come to class & do readings.
Prof. Baron gives clear well paced lectures you can keep up with. He explains crime theories with examples that make it stick. He listened to me and gave guidance on essay. It's possible to get high 90s in this course.
I like how Prof. Baron presented material and led us through challenging readings. He was really helpful when I was preparing my presentation and essay. Recommend his course.
Interesting course that prepared me for all my other criminal justice and law courses. Prof Baron lectures at a steady pace so you can actually take notes. I don't usually like theory courses, but this one had great applications to the real world. Knows his stuff. Always willing to help. I found tests and assignment fairly graded--even easy.
I like how Prof Baron structures his lectures. Theory can be difficult but he spells out the main arguments of each theory and shows how theory applies. I liked doing the essay assignment. He answered questions quickly on discussion forum. Lectures at a reasonable pace for a refreshing change! Detailed PPTs are helpful for notes. solid choice.
This is the first course in university where the professor lectured at a reasonable pace. Dr. Baron's pre-recorded lecture videos were clear, well organized, calm. I have ADHD and struggle in lecture courses. Dr. Baron also posts detailed PPT slides which are helpful. Tests fair - even easy and he boosted class average. Quick email replies too.
Never rated before but had to because in my final year at Queen's I have never had a more horrid prof. Lazy, tough grader, monotoned, and outdated. This class would have been great if ANY other prof taught the content. Average grades for assignments were high 60s, and feedback is constantly to elaborate despite word limits. WORST prof at Queen's.
MOST inconsiderate prof during covid. super inaccessible and really tough marker. 3 tests that are 50 mc- tries to trick you with similar words for answers (i.e psychological vs physiological) DO NOT TAKE- AVOID!
is the kind of prof that always says you can elaborate more on what you said in a paper no matter how much detail you give. Tests on small information within the readings rather than large overall themes. If they were not open book due to covid It would be impossible to get a good grade. not to mention his lectures suck I don't recommend
I really liked this course. Lectures were easy to follow and Prof doesn't talk too fast. Some videos were short. Textbook reading not heavy. Tests were completed at home, online, open-notes/book. Tests 100 mins for 50 mc questions. I usually finished in an hour. I'm averaging 90s. Prof waved late points on essay which was great.
Not sure why some students complained below. I liked this course better than my other courses. Professor gave clear lectures and doesn't speak super fast like my other profs. Tests were open book onQ. Lots of time to look up answers. I have A+ so far. He answers questions quickly on discussion forum and responses helpful. Recommend soci 275.
Good course. I liked that the professor cares to read our work and didn't just have TAs grade essays or score on a rubric. Rare for a prof to read and write comments on 200+ essays! Exams were online and open-book, so it's easy to look up answers and score high. It you put in an effort, this course is an easy A.
I enjoyed SOCY-275. Lectures were pre-recorded with detailed slides. Tests were online with plenty time to look up answers I'm averaging 94 and my housemate 96%. Nice to see a prof grade our essays and not just TA. Prof. Baron raised grades on test 2 by 2% because average was in 70s (first test 85% average!). Easy course if you try.
I liked how course was organized with 3 tests and an essay. Class average on tests was 70s and even 80s! I found taking notes from lecture videos helped on tests. Tests are open book and not proctored online. My friend is averaging over 100% on exams! (Prof boosted midterm 2% and waived late marks during COVID). Fair, even easy course.
This prof clearly puts in no effort into lectures or making the content accessible. This class is all about memorization and regurgitating it out into tests. If you are actually interested in the stuff he teaches, don't expect him to go into detail. By far the worst prof i have taken at Queens.
If you need accommodations- don't take this course. The tests are very tricky and don't test to see if you actually know the material and will test on things that are not in the lecture and in one small part of the textbook. You have to take EXTREME notes to do well.
boring class, tricky test questions, and expensive textbook. If you're looking for an easy and enjoyable class this isn't it
I'm shocked there are actually good reviews for this prof. I and everyone I've talked to can't stand this prof's teaching style. Most boring and tedious class ever
I enjoyed SOCI275 deviance theories. Prof. Baron is knowledgeable and gives clear lectures. Pace is reasonable (finally a prof whose lectures allow you to take notes). PPT slides detailed. Good supports online. Met with him for help on essay and he was patient and very helpful. He put in effort to make online course engaging.
Lectures were easy to follow and incredibly engaging. Term paper and exams were fair and designed well for remote learning. Prof appears genuinely passionate about what he is teaching but with great care for his students. Prof. Baron was dedicated to personally read every one of our term papers to ensure we received fair recognition. Honorable prof
I liked how well organized this class was compared to my other classes. Lectures were clear, content-rich and PPT slides were detailed. Course covers many different theories, but I liked that the instructor didn't just focus on one pet theory. Prof super accommodating to students with health/disability/other issues. Good course.
I liked having open-notes/book tests at home. It was easy to ace the tests, I found. Prof also boosted grades on one test and he personally re-read our essays after the TA team and added more feedback. I have not seen a prof give this kind of dedication to a class of 200 students at QU. Enjoyed lecture content -- good pace and well detailed slides
I appreciated that Prof Baron gave clear straightforward lectures. Some of my profs drone on and on and it's difficult to know what's useful. His lectures are uncluttered and to the point. PowerPoint slides detail key points. I took good notes - so open-note tests were easy. He boosted 2nd test scores even though average was 84% on test 1. Nice guy
This course much better organized than my other courses. Prof answered discussion forum and emails same day. Very helpful answers. Lectures content-rich, not long and PPT/video. Class average 70s for essay, 80s on tests. My grade bit below average, but I didn't read some chapters & missed at least 4 lectures. Still got a decent grade.
Lectures easy to follow. Speaks at a reasonable pace. Decent guy who takes the time to read all essays and ensure fair grading across TAs. Lots of feedback on essay. Exams fair, even easy to get an A. Course covers a lot of different theories -- prof doesn't push one theory as his favorite to be repeated back in exams. Good course.
I really enjoyed this course. Cool topics The workload was reasonable. It was too bad this year was remote because discussion forum onQ not the same as in a live seminar. Interesting material and professor gives helpful feedback on essays and presentations. He was helpful answering questions.
Baron was a very kind prof, however, he was incredibly disorganized and it was hard to learn things from him. He would only put titles or one/two words on slides so students would be forced to try and interpret was he was attempting to explain. Sometimes he would forget to give explanations and would get upset if we mentioned he forgot to explain.
Lectures drag on and are so hard to follow. There were many things present on the exams that I had never heard him discuss. Many of his slides contain one word. Attendance is not taken but if you don't go you're bound to fail. I get good grades but I am unsure I will be able to pass this course. I do not know how he has such good reviews.
I am also surprised at the amount good reviews this professor gets. This class is extremely lecture heavy, and you are expected to fail if you miss only a few lectures. His quizzes and tests also have nothing to do with his lectures or course material and expects some students to guess on them, he also lacks support for those with accommodations.
Lectures are very difficult to follow, slideshows are super long with only a few words per slide. He speaks quietly, and seemed to be irritated when people would stop him with questions. The exams have questions that were never talked about in lecture or in the readings.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
As a sociology major who plans on going down the criminology stream, this class was ROUGH. He spoke pretty quietly so it was difficult to understand what he was saying unless you were sitting at front. Lectures had very little content (many subheadings) so to understand the content you have to go to lecture - otherwise you'll fail.
Boring, repetitive lectures, very hard marker, and exams are so hit and miss and very tedious. One of the questions was from the epilogue in the textbook. That should tell you all you need to know.
Although attendence is not mandatory, his lecture slides do not make much sense if you do not go to class and hear his explanations. As well, some of the content on the midterms took me completely by surprise, as they were not mentioned in class OR the readings . . .
Very tough grader, some questions that appear on the test aren't even covered in lecture or textbooks, mumbles when he talks, boring and repetitive lectures, extremely difficult to please
It was difficult to digest the material the professor was teaching because most concepts were presented orally, with only headings provided on the slideshows. Additionally, the professor spoke quietly, making it challenging to hear what he was saying most of the time.
DO NOT take this class for an "easy elective". I am usually an A student, but his midterms and tests were extremely difficult and I found it difficult to get over a 60 on anything he assigned. Lectures were hard to follow, as he would put minimal words on slides (if you miss a lecture it is game over). Avoid taking this class if you don't need to.
DON'T take this. The lectures are hard to follow as he speaks quietly and does not give detailed information. The quizzes were challenging and hard to study for. Essay was graded harshly considering he never explained how to write a critical review. This class has no tutorials with TAs - is hard to get support and discuss class content with peers.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! Prof was awful and content was challenging. Could barley hear him speak and he had 0 enthusiasm
While the lectures can be dry, using study aids like unstuck ai and staying engaged helps make this manageable. The material is challenging, but the fair grading and helpful feedback balance it out. An average effort should get you a decent grade.
