After the first test I thought I did well on, I learned that I was average which was 64% or a D. He was clear to understand but tests and lab exams were very difficult. The class average should not be that close to failing. I put in a lot more time than what was required for lab, and still did horrible. Good luck if you are not a good test taker :(
He is a good instructor but know his lecture exams are very difficult! His tests are those that require to use your knowledge as the questions go beyond general information. Knows his stuff but gets caught in side conversations. His class time lecture is not utilized the way you would expect a difficult class to be. Nice guy and very helpful
The labs were really easy, he got really far behind grading them so he was lenient on when you could hand them in. Really nice guy, will help you with whatever you need help with. Only downside of this class is that his tests were really hard.
he is wonderful teach he cares for his students success he gives all the staff that you needed for studing. i took with Anatomy and i learned lot than even i needed if you are wondering who to take anatomy he is the only super teach in anatomy in normandale i strongly suggest that you take with Bartell.
Bartell is a nice person and a great teacher and way BETTER than Reutter
One of the best at normandale. Informative and patient. Goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Great professor!
Great teacher!!! If your going to take anatomy at normandale go with Bartell!! He goes out of his way to help students understand this complex subject!
very unorignized lecture but over all helpful teacher would recomend taking someone else for this course
No matter who you take Anatomy with, its going to be tough; but if you work hard and are religious about attending lecture and lab, its a doable course. He tries to make himself available to students as much as possible. His lectures are a bit unorganized so I would definitely recommend catching up with the PowerPoints online after every lecture.
Anatomy is a difficult class in general but Bartell made it interesting and fun to learn. Amazing professor. Genuinely interested in the success of his students. Very highly recommended!
He is nice person very helpfull. try to focus his powerpoints then study the book. I didnt do well in the first test but as I was taking his advice I passed the class. Lab tests was wonderful I enjoyed and I got A on it. Try your best and Bartell will be the best for you. Goof Luck
Bartell is the best teacher in Anatomy. He easily explains his lectures and gets alot of examples. His lab grading are not bad. If you work hard you can get an A on it. Highly recommended. Good Luck
He is the best prof ever, he has very good personality. he tries to help every person the much he can. prof Bartel is very organised, and very clear. he will spend whole lot of time trying to make you understand things. he is very confident and seems to have deep knowledge of the material. Go for him, go for A, Go for the best prof ever!
Bartell is the best Biology Teacher Normandale has to offer! Very funny, friendly, and willing to help you to succeed in this class. If you have the opportunity to Anatomy with him, you should. Gives you study guides and goes over the exams before you take them. Very approachable and friendly, unlike other biology teachers. Awesome teacher!!!
Awesome Teacher! Anyone taking Anatomy needs to take it with Bartell, not only does he know his stuff he is absolutely a great person who wants to see his students succeed in Anatomy!
Bartell was extremely helpful w/ the material he posts to D2L. Be sure to take the quizzes even tho they are not graded. It was very difficult to take a semester long anatomy class during summer session, so avoid that timing if possible. Bartell as a prof is great- helping w/ tricks for memorization, good analogies, and humor when time allows.
This class is not a walk in the park.It takes dedication and motivation. There is alot of information covered. His test are very difficult. Our class average for 2 exams were 64%. Stock up in printer ink. There is alot to print out. This is his first time teaching this class and he covers alot of anatomy and cell biology.
Steve is a freakin' genius! He really knows his stuff. His lectures are straightforward and to the point. That said, this class is NOT easy. You need to work for it. Steve will be there to help you along. Also, keep in mind his quick sense of humor. He catches the class off-guard a bit, but I think he's hilarious!
Steve is my favorite teacher ever. Anatomy is not a easy class but if you work along with Steve you will for sure do good in that class. He is very helpful and available all the time. Make use of him and he will make biology fun!
i took both anatomy and physiology with him. Mr Bartell is very helpful and his materials are excellent.
Very helpful. Class is not easy, so make sure you understand the material before the exam.
Everyone knows this class is hard, including Dr Bartell. He makes this class as hard as it can be. He is approachable and willing to talk about class or chat about other things. I would not take him for any class. I found him way to smart for his own good, thus causing trouble for some students. He has the lowest passing rate.
I thought anatomy was fairly easy (I had Carlson) but physiology was a struggle. Bartell is all over the place in lecture and hard to follow most of the time. Nicest teacher, but there seemed to be no structure as far as note taking during lecture which makes test studying very difficult. "Essay" questions on tests were HORRIBLE!
Physiology was much harder than anatomy, so do expect to be spending a LOT of time working if you want to get a good grade in this class. That said, I found Mr. Bartell to be very very knowledgeable and helpful if you take the time to seek it out. A's are very possible in his class if you put in the effort.
It seems to be his belief that he should not have to teach the material. Rather, you should be able to simply intuit it. I found his unorganized material presentation & nebulous exam questions to be designed to prevent students from succeeding. Since this material is foundational for the health sciences, I would NEVER recommend him as a teacher.
Mr.Bartell is very nice and never rushes. His exams are very difficult. Matching, essay, fill in the blank and multiple choice. He uses PP and goes through 20+ slides a lecture. Exams will cover reading which he doesn't even go through in class sometimes. If you know Excel well, lab is easy. Just pick the right group so that no one drops out!
Very helpful and respectful. If you really put forth the effort and ask for help when you need it, you will do very well. I really learned how to study in depth about this subject and will use in my future career.
Easiness-4/5 if you OPEN your book.Clarity-2/5 because Dr.Bartell is too smart for his own good. Helpfulness-5/5 because he would love to teach you at least 1%of what he knows. Very nice person. Tests are hard. Labs were confusing. Yet this class is interesting by the end of the course. He is also a great anatomy teacher and physiology teacher.
Hard class but take this professor. He is very helpful. Lecture can be a challenge. Open you book and study outside of class, and you can get an A. Two tests. And the final. pop quizzes on D2l. Lab practicals are harder than other practicals. If you are taking anatomy, highly suggest this professor. Very smart and likeable guy.
Got an A. Take him if you want to learn something. Very intelligent and knows his stuff. Highly helpful.
He is really not that great. He is a very nice person I will tell you that and he is better than Debra and the other Bio professors. But his lectures are so boring, he repeats himself so much over a topic he really likes and doesn't focus over the stuff he should.
Dr. Bartell is the BEST biology teacher Normandale has! I am taking the class again but that one is on me, I underestimated how tough the subject matter was going to be and over loaded my schedule. Very nice, very helpful and wants to help!
Super lenient! His lectures sometimes can get long and boring but if you pay attention he's pretty hilarious. I would definitely take this instructor again.
Passionate about the subject matter and the students. Comfortable to talk to but DO talk to him if you're struggling, he will do anything he can to help.
He knows his stuff, just doens't know how to teach it to students. He rambles, never is clear and skips around a ton.
Dreadful class! Tests and quizzes are not easy. My recommendation for you is to follow the guidelines he tells you to and form a group study early!
He should not be teaching physiology, especially when this course is the one that matters most to all the people who took the list of pre reqs for it (and did well). It's a huge concern when the class average on a midterm is a 60%. He's a sweet guy but that doesn't make him a good prof. His exams + lectures set ppl up to fail. No structure at all
This class is not supposed to be easy. If you do the reading before class, take notes, show up to class, read his lecture preps and reviews you will do just fine. His quizzes make you think. My friends and I spend a lot of time reviewing together and all did well on the exam. We are taking this class to get into the health field, take it seriously
Midterm & Final are only exams. You also have online quizzes as well (do this as a big group)! I did and got 100% on all quizzes. 2 Lab Assessments. I didn't go to lecture, but i followed his lecture guide and reading guide. I got a B in the class. If you need him to dumb down a concept; he will do it! This class isn't easy, but that is expected.
Dr. Bartelle is a real gentleman and a scholar; always looking for best ways to teach practical science useful in the health field. Lenient grading. Excellent book; easy to understand. I learned simple yet deep concepts that will guide my future career. Best strategy for an A: read ahead, do online quizzes early, earnest effort in class projects.
Cares about his students, there needs to be more instructors like him. If you're having trouble, go and talk to him.
Mr. Bartell is an awesome teacher for a difficult subject! He explains things very well. Easily accessible outside of class time. He will help you if you ask. I had him for human anatomy and will have him again for physiology. No pop quizzes, could be a little clearer about what is actually on exams, but overall he is a great teacher.
Lecture heavy. Uses slideshows. Keep up with reading, lecture and lab quizzes. I recommend doing it in a group because it can be difficult. Study from the book & slideshows. Lab work, lab assessment exams and 1 paper are apart of grading. You have a midterm and final which are huge points. Midterm avg was 68%. Gives great feedback on labs.
This is a tough subject to begin with, but he made it easier by telling you what things to study and how deeply you would need to understand it. He gave clear explanations and was happy to go into deeper explanatio s when necessary. I would definitely suggest taking him for physiology.
Professor Bartell made a subject that I hate really enjoyable! He covers all his testing material in class and will take the time outside of class to clarify if you need it. Its not an easy A nut its an easy pass and as long as you do the homeworks, show up for lab, and study a little for the tests you ace this class. GREAT teacher!
Any question you ask will be answered with ten minutes of explanation, followed by "But we won't get that deep so don't worry about what I just said". Every lecture I left more confused. His slides consisted of "you should understand this". Reading 1-2 chapters a week all on your own. Reading the book & teaching yourself is the only way to pass.
I had Mr. Bartell for phys. He's a great teacher with a great personality, organized and wants everyone to succeed. He will make sure you fully understand any question you ask him with detail. He is the nicest science professor I have ever had and you can tell he is very intelligent and passionate about what he does.
This is a difficult class but he is a great instructor. He explains things well and thoroughly, using diagrams/drawings when necessary. Very patient and listens to students.
He is a great instructor for a hard material. anatomy is a tough class, but he uses simple examples to make it easy for you to understand. also, he is very patient and listens to your questions no matter how many questions you have and how simple is your question. HE IS JUST AWESOME!
Great professor for a tough subject. Explains everything clearly and is always patient when helping students.
For someone who needs an exact and detailed explanation of what will be on the exams, Bartell was a little frustrating. He goes into too much detail but he will always make it up by helping you with questions and prep you for exams in office hours. Very approchable and caring. Understanding. You teach yourself most of the time. Organized man. kind.
This is one of the more difficult classes I have ever taken. Steve is a nice guy, but I hated the way he taught this class. He gives a lot of information in various handouts and power points, but he doesn't follow an outline during the lecture. He jumps around from topic to topic, and he makes it difficult to understand.
If Professor Bartell has something to say, it is always worth listening to. Anybody would be lucky to take Biology with him as his classes are both informative and enjoyable. He really cares more about his students getting a good education than about grades. He is very passionate and will help anybody succeed.
Professor Bartell is one of the best professors I've ever had. He ultimately wants his students to learn and does everything he can to make the material as clear and precise as possible. He doesn't make it unnecessarily stressful but has high expectations for his students. Would highly recommend - great teacher!
Took his summer physiology class and really enjoyed it! He knows his material well and wants his students to succeed. In order to do well in his class you should ask questions and read the textbook maybe twice if you don't understand a certain topic. He gives good notes/powerpoints to follow along in lecture.
I took his summer physiology class and enjoyed it! He is very knowledgeable and is very helpful in answering questions. Reading the textbook is extremely helpful to understand the topics since the class is accelerated. Labs are simple. There are only two exams (MID and FINAL), so it is important to stay on top of studying.
Prof Bartell really cares about his students, especially the ones who make the effort to try their hardest. I took the 5 week summer anatomy course, every lecture was around 3 normal lectures worth! He is patient, always willing to help you learn and is pretty funny. He also is willing to help you out and make exceptions if you make a mistake.
He does care and he is very knowledgeable, except I wouldnt personally go to the lecture. Id rather go to him individually because hell start talking about random stuff during his lectures. Make sure youre specific and you direct the question to what you need to know. If you cant stand disorganization, take a different teacher lol
I took his summer anatomy and now I'm in his physiology. He loves what he teaches, but he is pretty disorganized! If you don't do the reading, you won't pass either class (duh, upper level bio). Lecture can be dull, but he throws in an unexpected joke every now and then which is hilarious lol. I like him a lot, but be ready to work HARD.
Literally the most boring class. It would help you more to not even show up and study on your own. His lecture was all over the place and he would TELL you we will be learning about something in the future, then we would never talk about it again. Unclear syllabus and due dates and he gets off topic a lot. Just find a different professor.
Only 2 exams all semester 10+ chap/test and they are HARD. Most disorganized Professor: disappears in lab, no structure, not clear on what he wants, doesn't grade instead posts general feedback to entire class. Lectures are worthless, goes too into detail no pp/slides, just scrolls through digital book and talks, literally, SO frustrating!DONOTTAKE
Dr. Bartell is not recommended. He is a very hard grader on material that he doesn't really touch base on. He's extremely unorganized, barely even knows whats going on in his own class. He had to fix our syllabus like two times. We finished our semester with only 300/600 points graded, nobody knew their final grade till 1.5 weeks after. Not okay.
Best professor in the school. Anatomy is a heavy reading class, stay on top of your stuff and you will be fine. Lectures are very helpful, he explains things very in depth and sometimes gets off tract but if you have any questions you won't leave with it unanswered.
I have never seen a more disorganized professor in my life. He says hell post assignments and doesnt for days on end. Right now its the end of the semester and he hasnt graded anything since the midterm. Only 300 of the 600 pts are posted and the class is over. He had a lot of writing assignments too with close deadlines. Very vague guidance!
His tests covered things he did not provide or mention. Going into it he states to teach yourself and will provide the material and content. The book and material did not cover some of his obviously copy pasted questions. He does not teach, he just grades. He expects degree level understanding with no guidance. Book reading / teaching.
I have a lot to say about Mr. Bartell, but here are the highlights: he only has two tests the entire semester and they cover overcomplicated topics he didn't cover in lecture. He didn't grade roughly 40% of the assignments until after the semester ended. Take his class, and you will literally have to read the textbook from beginning to end.
He never taught any lessons and never posted any lecture videos . He just had his students read and learn from the text book and complete assignments. I paid a lot of money for this class just to basically have to learn all this complex content by myself.
Very caring professor and wants you to succeed. He is available outside of class if you have any questions but also does rely heavily on the textbook to help teach you. There are a lot of online homework, some writing assignments, and labs that you need to do but those will ultimately help your grade if you don't do as well on exams. Recommend.
He's such a nice professor, that's why I feel awful leaving him a low score! And he may be a great professor for certain students, but for students who need a bit more guidance and excitement to learn this is the wrong class for you. It's really dry lectures + textbook reading. Really tough and confusing content. Take this if you're a self-starter.
Prof Bartell does a great job teaching Human Physiology. He's a very reasonable professor and is very approachable with questions. Class was taken online with in person lab. Recorded lectures are a little long, but most knowledge can be found in the text. Time commitment is important in this class, but I'd highly recommend Dr. Bartell to anyone.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I had him for physiology online and I thought it shouldn't be that bad, IT WAS HORRID. Lectures don't help at all, even reading the whole book doesn't help with the 2 tests in this class. His tests are not original and don't relate to the content at all. If you want to learn something don't take him.
Do your best effort to avoid this professor. His lectures may be okay, but the contents in his class were awful. He wanted us to analyze ECG data in the first lab in the second week of the semester (ECG was taught in the chapter 13 in the textbook), when we were studying chapter 2. Basically his lectures were not paired with the whole labs at all.
I had him for online human physiology & the lab tests and 2 exams (midterm/final) are VERY HARD. I was never able to finish all of the questions and he creates all of his own tests, so he manually grades everything. There is at least 3 things for you to do each week and you teach yourself from the textbook. If you do all your work you will be good
Good amount of homework, labs, writing assignment, and other graded items that will pad your grade for his very difficult exams. Prof. Bartell is very caring, and when you ask him a question, he explains it and goes beyond to make sure you get the material. Admittedly, it is a very self-motivated class other than the once a week homework module.
Office hours are key, ask ?’s. It’s all hw, labs, & notes that fall on you. There are lecture videos, but sometimes he explains too much that it doesn’t make sense. As long as you do well on the labs & hw you’re good. The tests are a midterm & final, which were so unbelievably difficult, but aren’t a huge % of your grade.
This instructor doesn't have lectures, PowerPoint, study guide, or zoom class, so you have to read the E-text day and night and it's very hard to understand. He never explains even a single word, and the worst part is some of his exams are memorizations. This is the laziest irresponsible instructor I have seen in my life. stay away from his class.
Don't waste your time and money with these instructor classes. He is a very messy instructor never teaches his class; he wants to you teach yourself. There is nothing to learn all he wants you to do is read textbooks which is overwhelming. it is same as to buy a textbook from a bookstore and reading it because that is exactly what he is doing.
Would not recommend. Professor ok, but the way he teaches is so confusing. Assignments were never clear when they were due. The only things that were clear were exams and labs. His lectures are ok but also very VERY boring. The way he teaches doesn't give learning any inspiration. Very unclear and unorganized hard to find things in course folders.
Professor Bartell gives you a good amount of extra credit and assignments to pad your grade for his difficult exams. Throughout the semester, he provides 3 extra credit opportunities, 1-2 homework assignments per week on Pearson (17 total), 6 lab activities, 8 Labster simulations, 2 writing assignments, 2 midterm exams, and 2 final exams.
Took summer physiology, he cares and listens to his students, if you ask questions they will be answered. He has always been willing to help thus far. The concepts in physiology are difficult to understand but he makes an effort to explain processes in-depth and makes sure there is a general understanding before moving on to other concepts.
I took Bartell twice actually, once online and once in person. I would avoid having him online if you have at least 2 other courses to take (maybe 1 is ok). I retook the class for summer in person and it was so much better! Passed the course with a B and plan on taking him in person again for Microbiology.
I don't know HOW he has good reviews. Lectures are very dry. You have to read the whole book and then go to office hours to have any idea what is going on. Tests are extremely hard w no curve (55% class average). I felt pretty lost the entire time, but at least so did everyone else. Mostly just getting through the class and not really learning.
I don't know how he has such a high rating. He took WEEKS to grade EVERY assignment (6 weeks for one of them) meaning you never knew where you stood in the class. Ridiculously difficult exams (class midterm average 52% and he blamed us for not studying hard enough). If you want a positive experience, take someone else.
He gives fair feedback on lab assignments and writing assignments. He is very generous with grading, but he can take longer to grade than any professors I took previously. His exams are tough and are hard to pass. He is a nice person in general, but not much of a good professor to take in his course.
I rated 4/5 because he was generous in grading the assignments and I appreciate that the class wasn't weighed down heavily by the midterm and final. The lab assignments were very confusing and I recommend starting them early. Bartell is also not very good at responding to emails fast so keep that in mind. You teach yourself with the book.
While Bartell is a great teacher, 2041 is SO hard. He is kind, answers questions with no hesitation. The course is graded off of 4 lab practicals, 4 exams, a rat dissection, 20 homework assignments, with some extra credit sprinkled in. The lab practicles and exams are VERY hard. The course load is terrible, it is heavy and designed for burnout.
He is kind and helpful, just ask questions and he is there for the students. This class is HARD! His lectures are boring but he covers the most important topics from the book. The lab and lecture exams are very difficult but if you study, attend class and ask questions you should pass. He is generous with grading and does give extra credit.
His lectures are extremely boring and not helpful. For exams he doesn't give us study guides or any advice for helping us pass the class. When you try asking for help he gives very vague answers. However, if you do take him try to go to open labs their super helpful and have helped me a lot! CLASS AVERAGE=HALF THE CLASS FAILS THE EXAMS!!
I took him for both physiology and anatomy and received an A in both classes. I frequently went to his office and asked him specifics of what I had to know for the test and I think those office hours was how I got a A. He has always been so kind, caring and considerate and I wish I could take him again for another class.
I had Professor Bartell for both anat, and physio accelerated. He was a great teacher, this class is hard but he is very considerate and knows what he is teaching.
I enjoyed his class. There were extra credit opportunities, and he is always up to answer your questions.
Took this class in person. Very understanding teacher, very helpful. Helps when you don't understand
I took his accelerated anatomy course. He kind of just throws the book at you and says good luck. But the labs are super helpful and you should attend all of them. DO NOT take the accelerated course unless you're super smart or average straight A's. He expects you to know all terms by heart with short time of being able to memorize them all.
