Very thorough when he goes over events in history but sometimes speaks in mono-tone and it's tough to focus. His essay exams are pretty tough because he's particular about how the essay should flow. He expects a lot out of his students, regardless if you're taking his class for credit or you're actually a history major.
Classes are interesting, no busy work Midterms are moderate if you study. Essay very particular on format topic etc.The prompt for the essay he gives you says the topic variety is very open but he is actually looking for very specific way of addressing the question.I would not recommend unlessyou want to take a shot in the dark at his expectations
Interesting lectures, he's a funny dude. Tests are super easy, just need to know the key-terms. Midterm/final are both full in-class essays, but he tells you all the possible questions beforehand. I've learned a lot. Sometimes he can have some rude moments though. Overall a good professor, I'd recommend!
His lectues are fun and I always leave learning something new. Quizzes are fine if you dont miss class and study the key terms, essays aren't as easy. Gives you the whole class and the questions in advance, so he expects a lot. Laid back guy but show up on time
he is very cool! wants his students to succeed and is super helpful if you ask for it.quizzes are easy if you study the key terms . And he tells you exactly what he wants for the mid term and final essays.
Best teacher ever. Will take again!
Definitely the reason I'm now a history major. Shows great interest in his students and the class material. Super funny and easily the greatest professor I've had.
Felt inclined to rate Batham as he was a great professor. Never used the book, he provides keynotes via Course Studio(Make sure to print them out, key to success in quizzes). He abhors cell phone users! Will call you out. Laptops are fine but be sure to participate. For the research paper, see him during office hours! VERY HELPFUL. Gave me my topic
I took Professor Batham's online class during Spring 2013. I learned a lot from his online lectures and found him very responsive to the emails you send him. Great teacher.
Avoid this class if you taking it for general education. It feels like professor thinks that everybody who's takin his class are history major. Almost impossible to get an A second language students.
Took this class as a 1st quarter freshman. Made college look too easy! Love the class. Great lectures. Easy to follow. Given lecture outline every class. One essay- very easy grader. A couple in class essays. Only cares about what you know. Pay attention and go to class and you'll pass. Gives interesting history trivia and is overall a funny guy!
good professor
Took him twice, highly rec! Take notes on laptop(trust me!), SPEAK up, seek help on term paper if needed(he basically gave me my topic). Never purchased the book. Take advantage of midterm/final essay reviews, he gives you a lay out of how they should be written, always got an A. Amusing, ABHORS cellphone-will call you out, straight to the point.
Prof. Batham is a teacher who you can tell right away cares a lot about the subject he teaches. His modules are well-written and easy to understand, providing a clear overview of the material in the textbook. The class involved a lot of work but as long as you put some effort into it he is a pretty generous grader.
TAKE HIM! Had him for the 2nd time for 17 series. He is a caring, hilarious, generous instructor. As long as you put in hard work, you will be rewarded :) textbook use is optional. Kudos to Batham, one of the best profs I had!
ive taken this professor twice and am currently in one with him he is very helpful when you ask for it if you put in effort to your work youll get a passing grade and overall as a person hes so down to earth and very intelligent
He treats everyone like they are a history major. Took his class online during the summer to finish my GEs. Doesn't give you full credit on discussions if you only post the min number of posts because he expects that you follow up with discussions. Very nit picky. History is already a boring subject, he made it even worst by giving so much hw.
Each midterm, 10-12 page essay, but if you study, you will pass.
I've taken Professor Batham for both 17B and 17C. Homework is minimal and easy. His lectures are the ABSOLUTE greatest. Even if you hate history, his lectures will have you enjoying it. His tests are all about the key terms from his powerpts, easy to do well if you take notes on the key terms! Final paper is a lot of work, don't procrastinate!
An excellent man and teacher, Professor Batham single-handedly resurrected my passion for this subject. Show up, pay attention, participate, and think - these elements for success in any class will virtually guarantee you a good grade here. From the moment you arrive the expectations are clear - a failure is almost certainly your fault.
Batham is an amazing professor, but he is not easy. You have to really know the material to write the essays, but gives you the possible questions in advance. The good news is he is willing to work with you to improve your writing. Not a lot of busywork or handholding, so you need to plan ahead for exams and term paper. Made me a better student
Funny and has good lecturer. Makes the subject interesting to anyone willing to take his class. What impressed me is that if you show an interest in your grade so will he. Great teacher and person, will take him again and I recommend his class to anyone that cares.
I have +50 hours of credit and a 3.85, so I understand what it takes to earn an A. Do NOT take his online class if it is only an elective or if you have a heavy load. Also, he will at times take 4-5 days to respond to emails which is ridiculous for an online course. If you have a light load (3-12 hrs) you should be OK in his online class.
This has been my favorite history class to date and I actually looked forward to going to class each day. Grading is clear and workload is fine if you stay on top of it.
Not an easy class, but definitely worth it. This is what college is all about. Makes you want to be a better student. Clear grading and expectations. My favorite class this year
He is a good teacher. His lectures could have a little more enthusiasm. The only hard thing about his test is completing word puzzles. But if you read everything on the chapters you will be ok. He gives extra credit too.
The most encouraging and understanding professor ever. Always willing to help and his lectures are quite good. Def has great personalities and the reason that makes history so interesting. As long as you spend time to study the quizzes and essay topics(midterm and final), you will get an excellent grade.
I love this teacher. He mad history super enjoyable, and I hate history. No reading, 3 vocab quizzes, 1 long essay and 2 essay tests. Strict, but if you follow the rules you'll be good. Don't use your phone or cheat. Super fun to listen to, and very straight forward. No surprises. Attend lectures and you'll get an A.
Really enjoyed Batham's class. He's passionate about what he's teaching and makes history fun! I'd highly recommend taking his 17c. No surprises in the class; everything is on a schedule provided at the start of the quarter. Tests and quizzes are very fair. Show up to class, pay attention, take notes, and any student will be fine. What a concept!
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot that I did not know and I found the class and assignments to be straightforward and easy to follow. He does expect a lot, but all of those expectations are laid out in the syllabus and there were no surprises. Overall a really fun class with great lectures and stories.
He is a great guy. He cares for other students to pass. Test may be a little bit hard but this class is worth taking it.
I took this class online and every exam and term paper I follow his requirement ,but still get 4/8. Also, I have no idea why he is mad at no one attend the online meeting. Hey, this is an online class.
His lectures are straightforward but, very dull. He is a harsh grader and doesn't give helpful feedback which makes exams difficult since there are many essay questions. He marks you down over the smallest mistakes and values composition over content.
Great teacher. Very easy to pass. Does a great job in making the criteria straightforward. Also a very understanding person.
Prof. Batham was a great professor. As long as you finish the weekly homework (which is easy to get extra credit on), the class should be easy. Also, his lectures are very helpful.
I had Professor Batham for all 3 history classes, and enjoyed all three of them. The web conferences are fun and enjoyable and he offers you extra credit on all homework assignments. Take his class if you can, you won't regret it at all!
This class was well structured but more time consuming than I expected. Midterm and Final papers were difficult and required extensive preparation beforehand. Be ready to write!
I am a high school student and had Professor Batham for HIST17B. We had amazing lectures and he is always willing to help. I wrote a huge outline, and he spent several hours reviewing and offering feedback! 10/10 teacher, and a funny guy as well! Make sure to do your homework, or else you will get points taken away for not doing it! (EX. -0.4/0.4)
History 17B with professor Batham was truly a very good experience. I ended up adding into his class late, thankfully, and he truly is a great professor. 3 reading responses, 1 discussion question per week, midterm, research, and final paper. Simply attend the live web conferences per week and he covers everything you need for your papers!!!
Super straightforward class. Have to attend class. He's funny! easy grader!
He does not post lectures online so if you miss class you will have no idea what is going on. Don't leave the term paper until the end it will. Study for the quizzes and the essay questions!
Hes great and knows his stuff! I took 2 of his hist classes. attendance is mandatory! follow each lecture along with his printable lecture guides while taking DETAILED notes. Midterm and final are essays, meaning a BLANK exam book with a given essay Q. not a class you can BS in! Big term paper, quizzes and 2 tests. Easy A's if you go to class
He is an excellent professor who tells you exactly what you need to know for his exams in his web conferences (I took the online course) and his class is very easy. He is a very nice guy and he makes a class that I thought would be incredibly boring much less boring than I thought would be possible.
Mr. Batham's grading system is horrible. There is only a total of 40 points that you can earn. Grades aren't worth what their suppose to be worth. If you get a C in major assignment it's like getting an F, and if you get a B it's really worth a C. If you want a fair grading system then don't take Mr. Batham's class. Cool guy, bad professor.
He gave a lot of extra credit opportunities on every assignment which really help. His weekly homework assignments can get tedious, but just skim the reading and answer the questions up to the word count and you will be fine. His essays are a bit tough, but just make sure you are thorough and you'll be good. His lectures were very entertaining!
The best teacher I have ever had in my life. I took every class he offered. Very reasonable grader, and the course is set up in such a way that no one essay or exam will make it impossible to get an A. Exams are not the easiest but the term quizzes are easy if you study. Also, he gives extra credit and curves upward if he sees improvement.
Easily one of the best professor's at this college. Cares about you passing and will take the time to explain things in a pretty funny way. Loved his lectures. Doesn't allow use of electronics at all, and will get pretty angry at people who look at their phone even once during class. Definitely recommend!
He is a cool teacher. Dont do stupid stuff like cheat, use devices during class, speak without raising your hand and do not interupt him while he is speaking. His test I think its like 100 questions per quiz. Read all material take notes and remember everything you can especially if you are a bad tester it easy class and easier to fail!
Batham is a great teacher. He is super clear on how he grades things and gives tons of extra credit opportunities - I got a D on a pretty big assignment but still got an A+ in the class. Not to say it was super easy, but if you put in the effort, i.e. do the reading, watch conferences, and do research paper well, you will succeed in his class.
The midterm and final are both written and you get the questions before hand so you can prewrite it or have notes when you take the test because you only have 2 hours. He is really funny and is willing to help. He answers by email quickly during the week. great professor!
I took the online class. There is a LOT of work, but you learn a lot and plenty of extra credit. I was not looking forward to the class but he makes history fun. Late work is accepted, and he's really funny. I Recommend!
Professor Batham's course was primary assignment heavy, which are additional readings outside the textbook. These are the real gems of the course and I found so much value in them. The textbook he chooses is EXTREMELY concise and easy to read. He has a weekly conference that I found redundant, but I stayed up-to-date with assigned reading.
History classes always have a lot writing and this one is not exception. Overall a fun and easy class, just be prepared to read and write.
I took this course online in the summer for one of my credits. He was a terrible grader. There was so much work involved and so many essays I could barely breathe. He doesn't allow not even one late assignment. There was conflicts between the communication as well. WORST TEACHER EVER. SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME AND CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TEACHER.
I took his online class during summer to fulfill my credits and was nervous but overall really enjoyed it! There is A LOT of work but its helpful. You have many extra credit opportunities but if you miss or dont do well on one assignment it can affect your grade so stay on track. I learned so much and am really happy I took this class.
Great teacher, I learned so much. Im not sure why others are saying that he is so difficult when he provides extra credit, lectures and modules, emails back quickly and is very present in the class. I retained almost everything I learned in his class because it was organized so well. I hate history class, but oddly I enjoyed it this time.
Incredibly heavy workload will leave you gasping for air. 2hr 1200 word exams with 5 possible questions beforehand so you pretty much need to write 5 essays for one grade. Redundant forced "conference" with little extra information that could have been added to online modules. Material boring; no thinking required. FYI, I am a 100% A+ student.
Good online class. You have to do work on a weekly basis, but none of it is too time consuming. Does online conferences that help for the midterm and final. Typical history class where there is a lot of reading, but the assignments are interesting. I liked the personal touch of the weekly conferences. It actually felt like a real class.
Took this class as a general ed requirement, but I felt like this professor thinks everyone is a history major. If you are a full-time student BEWARE as his class was more time consuming than my statistics class and other courses I took this quarter. Lots of reading and writing and only one small extra credit discussion question.
He makes you work for it. It wasn't one of those breezy classes but it is very easy to get your desired grade. If you follow his instructions you will get a good grade. The only thing I did not like were the online conferences. Online classes offer so much flexibility however, these conferences ruined the flexibility that I needed in my schedule.
The professor literally gave me a 0 out of 400 because for the last prompt out of 5 prompts of the midterm, I was flagged for 2 sentences that referenced his online module/lecture. The first flagged was names of 3 emperors, and the second one was paraphrased from his module again. This is not how a professor should treat his student at all.
Professor Batham always came to class prepared to help kids learn the material and learn it well. His lectures were always interesting and I never felt nervous to raise my hand or participate. You can get a good grade if you show up and put in the effort.
I took this HIST 4C class. He did not teach us anything. He only asked us to read his module and I have to self-study everything. It was very useless. Besides, he often discouraged his student and he didn't give fair grading. He doesn't deserve to be a good professor.
Bathams workload is very manageable and it is easy to get an A if you put in the work. After taking History 8 with him, I developed a passion for Latin American history, which is something I never wouldve expected. As a history major, Batham's classes are some of the best and most informative classes I've ever taken.
Each week we had to read a chapter covering a decade, participate in a discussion, read and write about a passage related to the chapter and a quiz. All manageable within a week. He gave you extra credit for the discussions/passages if you put in the effort. He was overall a great teacher.
took his class this quarter (spring 2020) and with the covid situation, he was extremely understanding and made many accomodations (no textbook, etc.) for students. replied to messages AND graded very quickly; he also gave extra credit on all the weekly assignments if it was obvious you put in effort! rubric and syllabus were both extremely clear!
I took him for summer classes and my opinions are : You read you do quizzes (Easy quizzes- you can find answers in the modules) You write long answers for every question and you can get extra credit. You do all the assignments and you can surely pass with an easy A. Try to write double than the minimum word requirement and you can get free credits.
I think he's a good choice, it's pretty easy to get an A if you just do the work and he offers extra credit if you just write more in your answers. The only reason why I did not get an A is that I did not know the quizzes were open book-note that!. Just add details, you'll get a good grade, he replies pretty quick, but there's little feedback.
Professor refuses to address inconsistencies between their grading rubrics, syllabus, and quizzes to the point of suggesting students drop before addressing their own mistakes. Avoid this professor "otherwise this is going to be a very long quarter for you." (Batham, 2020).
I took a history course with Professor Batham to fulfill a GE. By the time I graduated, I'd been in his clubs, a second class, and an independent study project. His lectures are engaging, and directly address the material that is tested. His grading scheme is clear, and he makes allowances for students who put in effort. Take him for your GE/Major!
I took this class online and it was not enjoyable. The workload is manageable but I spent all of my time for the class reading and writing and answering quizzes. Professor Batham did not teach at all and the writing prompts he gave were uninteresting and very basic. I could have just read a book on Latin American History on my own.
Batham is one of the best organized professors at FH. Course includes: textbook & primary document reading (he provides the latter), weekly quizzes & discussions, 1 Midterm, 1 Term Paper, 1 Final. All assignments on a set schedule & he grades quickly. Extra credit offered on all solid hw submissions. As long as you read, this class is NOT hard.
The material was really interesting, which made the homework and assignments fun to do. Don't wait last minute to do the term paper, I actually had lots of fun writing but it's painful if you procrastinate. Class is well structured, with clear expectations each week. Do above-average work for writing assessments if you want a high grade.
The level of assignments seemed like it would be for a five-unit course, not a four-unit. It was hard to balance this course with another. The grading criteria was confusing at times. There are multiple weekly assignments (two primary sources per week), a discussion, a midterm and final, and a lengthy final paper.
Not a hard class just a lot of work for a 4 unit course as others said. He grades very easily though so its fair
The workload is somewhat high but the course is very much weighted in your favor as long as you put in the work. Professor communicates well, course guidelines are clear. I liked the readings. They're his own writing, adapted from selected passages of the optional textbook.
Syllabus not up to date, dropped due to guidelines not specified until 12 hours before getting dropped. Needs to actually specify what you should do to stay apart of the class BEFORE it is too late. His mistakes cost me time and money...EXTREMELY annoying and frustrating.
Make sure to get started and prepare your research term paper (Chicago format) ahead of time! Multiple choice quizzes every week on the lectures. There are also primary doc questions (which you can get extra credit from) and discussion boards every week. There was a midterm paper and final paper, but the lower score gets dropped!
There isn't any homework besides three short readings and an essay. All the information you need to pass the class with a good grade is in the lectures which are actually interesting, and he gives out his own lecture notes. He only did one piece of extra credit, but he changed my midterm grade a full letter grade. he really likes what he is doing.
The class isn't that hard and the workload is easy. Each week is one untimed quiz, one discussion, and one half page response to a reading. All graded as full credit or redo it, so If you just do the work you are going to get an a or b. Drops lowest grades. Others reviewers who said it is a lot of work are either lazy or don't belong in college.
I wouldnt refer this class. He doesnt teach, relies on modules that typed up, not interesting in the least. Not a memorable class. Find another professor who actually engages with you and the classroom whi is excited about what theyre teaching. This quarter he had meetings during his office hours. Just do yourself a favor and dont take this w/ him
Prof. Batham is an excellent teacher. Each week there is a reading assignment, a quiz, an online discussion, and a primary source document assignment. This is at most 3-4 hours of work. The information is interesting and engaging. I especially appreciated the online lectures, which I often would read on the go when I had a few spare minutes.
great history professor. he makes US history very interesting and he's a funny guy too. take him if you can but don't buy the textbook
I was scared to take a summer class because of how fast paced it goes and some of the ratings for this professor almost made me drop the class. However this was a good class manageable work load for a 6 week session. He offered extra credit for the primary writing assignments. I would take his class again.
This professor expect too much and his lectures were really hard to understand. He assigned way too much homework and there was a lot of reading that you had to do in this class. Personally, this class felt overwhelming, and will not take this professor again.
I took online during summer & moves fast but it was a good class. Consistant grading, organized, clear expectations. Modules were interesting to read. Each week was read module 30-60 mins, untimed quiz, discussion, & 1/2 page writing prompt. You get what you put in: More effort=better grade & extra credit. Not hard but takes time. Will take again
Interesting material but the best part is the Source documents provided that we must comment. It gives a feeling of the work historians do. It is fascinating to view the world of the past through the eyes of those who lived it.
Word count requirements are only stated in the syllabus and never restated in assignments making it hard to complete assignments in the fashion he wants. If you are 5 words off the once stated count he will mark you a 0 on the assignment.
Lectures are very simple to read and give a very good overview of the topic, and he even recommends CTRL+F'ing the information in the lectures to answer questions on the quiz. Just make sure to get the word counts as he takes them very seriously, but otherwise pretty simple to do well.
Easily the most frustrating grader I've ever had. His criteria are insanely strict for no real reason and when you miss the tiniest little thing he gives you a terrible grade. Everywhere you look it says something different for requirements and he is not helpful when you confront him about these things.
Tried to take 17C for the Summer 24 quarter- I was on the waitlist and he told me he had a spot for me and an add code for me. I replied ONE MINUTE later confirming I wanted to take the class. He didn't get back to me until 2 days later and said that the class is now closed, even after sending proof that I did indeed reply to his initial email.
I took this online class after taking his in person previously. There is always reading and a small writing assignment each week so it takes time but it isn't impossible and easy to get full credit. Quizzes are open book and exams. The only difficult part is the term paper bacuase it takes a while to write.
I took Bathams in person class first and later took his online class. The in persons has less work every week but you have to go to class everyday if you want to do good on the quizzes. The term paper takes time for research but he gives you the books you need in the library. Mostly lectures but its interesting and he has good stories
Pretty easy class if you just do the work. Gives extra credit every week. If your getting zeros and failing, that's on you. If you can't pass this class, you don't belong in college
Do not believe the GREEN! RUN far away from this Professor. This Professor has no idea what teaching means. Projects are insane! He's not going to teach you HOW to do the assignment, he wants you to know already. Talks about "cheating" all the time as a scare tactic. Nothing interesting or creative. AVOID! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Submit an assignment the next morning after the Saturday's 11:50 deadline, you get a 50% grade deduction. Write 350 words in the essay that requires 200 to get a D for being too concise. All the grading system and requirements are made to confuse students. He doesn't really teach, it's probably better to watch a documentary on YouTube. Boring
Extremely difficult grader, zero sympathy for students
Very straightforward class. Do the work and most of it is credit or no credit. This is the second class I've taken and you'd have to be a halfwit or cheater to not pass. The only pressure was the term paper but otherwise it's not too much
His online class is a quiz, a reading+ 1/2 page response, and a discussion each week. Gives full credit if you do the work and extra if you do more than required. No late work period, but his grading is fair
He's a terrible professor readings he gives can answer all the questions but he has a terrible ai policy accused me multiple times of using ai even though i didn't doesn't care about his students at all lazy grader all he does is accuse for ai
Opportunities for full credit in weekly primary document assignments and discussion posts which is great. However, extremely harsh term paper grader with very little helpful feedback. Honestly seems like arbitrary dishing out of poor term paper grades & midterm/final examinations. Would recommend taking other history courses if possible.
Doesn't use a textbook and the readings are good. Each week is a reading with extra credit and a quiz. Weekly work is fairly easy but the term paper takes a lot of time and he expects a polished final draft. Lost points for missing research and internet sources but it's only 15% of total grade so if you do good on other stuff it doesn't matter
Mr batham teaches the material well and only grades on 4 quizzes, 1 project and a midterm and final(best of the 2 grades used). The syllabus was incredibly confusing and implied that the 4th quiz is optional when its not. Apart from that hes a pretty chill professor. He has a strict no phone policy
Run far away from this professor. He has no empathy for students whatsoever and will give you a 0 on an assignment if you dont get the formatting exactly how he likes it. Weekly readings are interesting but lots of assignments, on which he leaves very little if any feedback. Don't take this class if you want someone who is understanding of students
Class hasa no large projects or anything that is worth a big part of your grade. There are a couple writing assignments each week and the readings are interesting. As long as you turn in everything and follow the instructions, I don't see how you couldn't get a good grade. Responds fast to email and helpful during office hour.
kinda easy class, just do the work and make sure everything is in the minimum requirements. don't use any other sources outside of the ones he provides for major assignments and you should be fine.
I really enjoyed Professor Batham's class. History 17A is the perfect first class for someone who is just starting college and trying to get the hang of it. Professor Batham provides clear grading policies and deadlines, and the syllabus describes all of the assignments and requirements in detail.
This professor is amazing. If you really want to learn something, you need to take Professor Batham. His class is not hard, but you do need to do the work. He is reasonable and understanding and genuinely wants you to learn. He was always available and responded to emails very fast. I wish he taught more classes. Highly recommend 5/5
History 17B was a very enjoyable class to take. I felt that I truly learned in this class. The reading assignments are really interesting and thought provoking, as are the weekly discussions. Also, Professor Batham has built in leniency in the grading policy which makes it possible to get a good grade even if you do truly have an emergency.
Professor Batham was an incredible teacher. It felt like he truly cared about me and my success both in and out of his class. He was always prompt to respond to emails and was always very understanding and helpful. He is very clear in his grading, and his feedback helped me not only to succeed in his class but also to become a better writer.
Although history is not my strong suit, I enjoyed this class so much. The professor is definitely someone who cares whether you learn or not. He is extremely knowledgeable. He has clear grading criteria and always responds in a very timely manner. I would highly recommend this professor and his courses.
Amazing Class, Great professor! Straight forward assignments that don't take too much time, leading up to a term paper. Easy grading on weekly assignments, with generous extra credit from the professor. He was even kind enough to round me up when the syllabus said no rounding! Loved the class! HIGHLY recommend Professor Batham.
Super easy class, everything is very straightforward and as stated from the syllabus. 2 quizzes each week, with ~4 easy reading assignments and another easy discussion post. extra credit very easy to obtain on the reading assignments, and it adds up a lot by the end of class. basically only two papers, both pretty easy. overall great professor
I really did not like this professor. He was my least favorite teacher I've ever had. He failed me over and over. His grading was unfair at times. I would highly suggest you avoid this class.
One thing I will have to say is this is a generally a decent class but the teacher is a very HARSH grader and no matter how hard of work you put in if it is not perfect to him he will give you a low grade. if you follow the rubric you will be fine but also the professor is mainly busy and will not respond to your emails until late. !!!!
