Wonderful professor; by far one of the best I have ever had at BYU. His passion for the subject is contagious. He genuinely cares about his students and he will do anything in his power to help them succeed. The subjects he teaches are hard and thus require study and dedication, but if you are willing to work hard you will do well.
Dr. Bay is amazing! He really knows his subject and is proficient at teaching it. He does everything he can to help his students succeed and understand the subject material. He is a lot of fun and makes class enjoyable, despite the difficulty of the material.
Dr. Bay's class is great for learning the material. He quizzes on readings each class period, but its no problem if you read them. His lectures are very interesting and the grading is fair and is based on comprehension of the material.
Dr. Bay is a wonderful professor. His classes are interesting, the discussion commendable worthy, and he is kind. Also, Bay is humble- which among the classics profs seems to be a rare find.
Bro. Bay is so awesome! Hey is so passionate about what he is teaching and he is so fun. He is really interested in helping his students succeed despite the difficulty of the class. I would take another class from him in a heartbeat!
Professor Bay is a wonderful teacher. He really likes his students and the subject he is teaching. He is extremely enthusiastic, and has a good sense of humor. Although it is a lot of reading, it is very interesting reading. If you pay attention in class, you are good to go!
I LOVE Professor Bay. He is so smart and funny. He truly knows his subject and he is both sincere and enthusiastic. I really appreciated this class, and it almost tempted me to take Classics as a minor! I highly recommend this class. It's a lot of reading, but it is very interesting.
I have avoided taking classes from Bay up to this point in my classics career. Now that I have, I am not sure why! He is the man! The class is a lot of work, even if you don't already have another language under your belt. If you haven't got one, I am not sure this is a good class to take. If you are willing to put in the work, you will love it!
Pros: Extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and entertaining guy. Interacts well with students. Answers questions well and encourages class discussion. Cons: gets off on (interesting) tangents, making it hard to know what we're responsible to know. class can be a bit disorganized. Takes a long time to get grades back.
Professor Bay rocks! He's a really awesome dude, and he loves his subject and makes it interesting. You can do fine in this class if you're willing to do the readings and study.
So he is a good professor; he is interesting and passionate. He gets SO excited about it. He knows everyone's name; he is very personal. However the class is tough. I read SO much for the class and always missed one or two on the quizzes which ruined my grade. The tests are not easy. Study EVERYTHING he talks about in class and go over the readings
He is so passionate about the subject that it makes you want to learn more. He convinced me to major in Classics. It's a lot of reading but is interesting. There's daily quizzes but just do the reading. He goes off on tangents but there are very interest and he gives you a list of terms so you don't have to worry about it. Highly recommend him.
I really like Brother Bay! I would definitely take another class from him. Class is fun and I learned a lot. He cares a lot about the students and the subject and is really helpful and passionate. There are daily reading "quizzies," two papers, two midterms, and a final.
If you'd of told me before this class that I'd be loving ancient literature, I'd of told you you're crazy. Prof. Bay really loves the topic and it shows. The class is a lot of work, I'm not going to kid you, but I came out of class really learning something. I'm even considering changing my major. He's one of the best professors I've had.
Great teacher who has an obsession with ancient pirates. The class is a lot of fun, but you definitely have to study since there is a lot of history involved.
He's a good teacher that seems to really value what you have to say about the literature. His passion for the topic is contagious, too. There's a lot of reading, but the books are really worth reading, so it's okay.
I loved this class and Bro. Bay. He is so passionate about the subject, and it just rubs off on you! He is SO knowledgable on the subject and I learned SO SO SO much. There's a lot of reading, but it's all worth it! I DEFINITELY recommend taking this class even if the class description doesn't seem like your thing. Absolutely wonderful class!
Professor Bay is seriously the greatest. He has so much knowledge and so many interesting stories and facts that he can't help but go off on interesting tangents during class. There is a lot of reading but it's all interesting. As long as you do the reading and memorize the key terms he gives you in class the tests will be easy! Amazing class!
Professor Bay is an excellent teacher. He definitely made it on my top 3 list. If your are willing to put in the effort and do all required readings, there is no reason not to get an A. He is also very funny and incredibly passionate about his job. Also, he really loves pirates, which is awesome. I highly recommend taking his classes.
AWESOME. Even though there is quite a bit of reading required, it's interesting reading, you learn a lot and it isn't very hard! Brother Bay is really passionate about what he teaches and makes it really fun. I would definitely recommend.
I love Dr. Bay! I just took this class as a gen ed, and it was my favorite class of the semester. Dr. Bay gets so excited about what he teaches that it makes class enjoyable every single day. I never thought I'd like ancient Greek and Roman literature, but now I wish I could change my major!
Dr. Bay is one of the kindest professors around. He bends over backwards to help his students understand the content and always sticks around to answer questions they might have about the lesson or future careers in Classics. He teaches hard subjects, so his classes are hard, but you couldn't ask for a better Classics teacher.
By far one of my favorite professors- and I'm not even a classics major. Because of his obvious love for the topic, you can't help but love it to. Extremely enjoyable, learned so much and it was easy to get a good grade. TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM!!! You won't regret it. The reading is heavy however- but worth it.
Fantastic teacher. Great storyteller. Goes off on tangents a lot, but they're really fun and interesting. Very knowledgeable and obviously loves the subject. Even as a CS major who was mostly uninterested initially, this was one of my favorite classes. Lots of reading, but it's manageable and interesting.
I'm not goint to say this was an easy class... I had to work for it. But with that being said--it wasn't impossible. I took this as one of my last classes at BYU. Dr. Bay is VERY accommodating and lectures are FANTASTIC. I was engaged and found myself loving the content!
Professor Bay is the best professor I've had here at BYU. The class is difficult, but not unmanageable. There is a quiz every class, they're generally easy, but you HAVE to do the outside reading, or you won't get a good grade in the class. However, the amazing way that Professor Bay teaches makes up for that. He has so much passion for the subject
Very time consuming class, but worth every second. Do not fall behind if you miss class. Total of +3.5% if you do study group and come to every class (but 2). Also, it all comes down to Twinkies, so what is there to complain about?
Dr. Bay definitely makes you work hard for your grade. There's a lot of reading and a lot of quizzes. Tests aren't excruciating but they aren't easy at all. He's passionate about what he teaches so it makes class interesting. If you skip class more than a few times, you will not pass. This class is a lot of work but is definitely worth taking!
Friendly, knowledgable, passionate about his subject, always pretty good-natured. Respectful towards his students and their input. His classes are always engaging with a good atmosphere and his lectures are rarely dull. The one thing I'm not a huge fan of is that he doesn't allow laptops. Other than that, awesome professor and awesome class.
Bay's class is amazing concerning the amount that you learn about history and literature. He is so passionate about what he teaches and his students. Not going to lie the tests are challenging and there is a lot of reading but it is my favorite class I have taken. If you're into mythology, greek, or latin Roman History.... TAKE THE CLASS.
Dr. Bay is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable, is a good lecturer, and is very invested in his students' learning. But, if you are not very interested in ancient literature and history, I wouldn't recommend this course. Reading is long, quizzes are tough, and the material can get boring. Definitely not an easy G.E.
Honestly an amazing professor. The lectures are so entertaining. You do have to read a ton, so if you like classic literature it is great, if not it is still bearable because Dr. Bay makes up for it. Two essays, two midterms, one final, and reading quizzes. Tests aren't that difficult, but you have to pay attention. I loved the teacher and class.
Amazing professor whose passion for the subject inspired me to learn more on my own. The books you read are ancient classics that are very useful in the future
He is amazing! His way of telling stories is wonderful. I think everyone has found themselves sitting in awe as he lectures. If you want to use a laptop, you have to ask, but he will let you... I thought it was so worth it. He is just the best professor ever, and while daily "quizzies" are not fun, they are no problem if you prep right.
Professor Bay loves what he teaches and he makes you fall in love with it to. Very good at speaking. Lectures are fun. Make sure to take notes in class!!!
This class really made me appreciate the classics. I hated them before and dreaded this class but Professor Bays made me love them. There are daily reading quizzes but if you do the reading they aren't too bad. The papers are important but there is lots of help. The tests are very fair and based exactly on what he says they will be. Overall Amazing
Professor Bay is the best teacher I've had at BYU. This class was amazing. There's lots of reading and 2 essays that are a bit of a pain, but his lectures were funny and interesting. He valued participation and really knew what he was talking about. I would take any class he taught just because of how great of an experience it was.
He is brilliant and really knows what he is talking about, though I do leave the class confused sometimes, though that is just the nature of any language class for me. . Most of the lessons come straight from the book, which can be difficult, but he does try to make it make sense. He is hilarious, I would 100% recommend taking a class from him.
There's a quiz on the reading every class, long lectures but he makes the material so interesting! He's available, more challenging than he seems though. He's incredibly enthusiastic and respects comments.
I love Professor Bay's class!! Definitely not one for the faint of heart though. He is there to help you learn, and even though he gets off on tangents, they are always interesting and (mostly) enhance what we're discussing. Super tough but fun! If I had a choice, I would take all of my Classics classes from him!
Captain "The Hammer" Bay is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is approachable, fun, sincere, and really knows his stuff. It was not uncommon for him to arrive 5 minutes late to class, but that is merely an opportunity for someone to stand on a desk and recite poetry. His names ("dragonflesh verbs") for certain constructions helped.
He is the cutest nerd ever! he is all about ancient cultures, and his excitement about the subject is contagious. He does get a little scattered in his lectures though, because he wants to tell you everything that ever happened. Final is harder than the midterm. Overall very enjoyable class. HEAVY READING THOUGH. 50 pages per class period.
The best teacher I have ever had in my entire academic career. I looked forward to his class each week and wanted to do the reading so that I could participate in his very open class discussions. He made a 150 person class feel like a 15 person class. An amazing story teller you really LEARN what he teaches. fair tests. i recommend him to anyone.
Professor Bay is an amazing teacher & goes above and beyond to help his students. There is a quiz at the beginning of EVERY class and the questions are very specific, even when I did the readings I still would occasionally get a 60%-80%. Test reviews were not helpful. Again, great guy. The class was just more difficult than it should have been.
This man knows his stuff. The class is way harder than it should have been. The test reviews did almost nothing but I would still go to them. A heck of a lot of reading. In class we would talk about so many different things, It was hard to know what to study for the test. The test were HARD! There was a quiz everyday on the reading. Also 2 papers.
I absolutely loved Dr. Bay's class. I feel like I know so much about Greek and Roman history and literature. The tests were clear and I knew exactly what to study. Amazing lectures, very inspiring. Plus he's just the most passionate dude! If you aren't prepared to spend a LOT of time on reading, do not take this class though.
Not personally a huge fan of the subject, but his passion and enthusiasm is contagious. He's completely off his rocker but that's what makes it interesting. A lot of reading, but it's stuff that's actually entertaining and sparknotes is great. Came away with a new appreciation and a better understanding of the subject, would definitely take again.
There are quizzes every class which isn't terrible but the midterms can be challenging because he only does a practice exam for the first one and tells his TA's not to comment on the written portion of the tests so you don't know how you did. Grades based on TA's opinions and his approval. Lots of reading & must know the smallest details in books.
Honestly this is the most pointless class ever. Thanks BYU for making your generals way harder than they need to be. Just a class to ruin your GPA. The teacher tells you about your tests the day before and says his TAs can not even help you with a review. What a guy....
Professor Bay is the most amazing storyteller & has made me love the Classics. There is a LOT of reading required (60ish pages per class), but it is very clear what you need to know for tests and the books are interesting. I took this class for a GE, but now am considering a minor in Classics because of how much I loved the class. Highly recommend!
Awesome guy. His lectures were great and he clearly loved the subject. However, expect lots of reading before every class and reading quizzes given in every class. The vocab term list really helps with studying for tests. I really enjoyed this class, but beware that subjective things like essays can ruin you.
If you're looking for an easy general credit, this class is not for you. Unnecessarily hard for a general, but with that being said, you will learn so much. Prof. Bay is great at keeping everyone engaged and learning. If you put work into this course, you will surprise yourself by how much you can learn. Very doable and rewarding, but requires work
Professor Bay has been my favorite teacher! He is so funny and makes the class really fun. He really cares about each student and will help you out if you need it. As long as you do the readings, work really hard and memorize all the terms for the tests, then you will be totally fine in the class. 100% would take again!
Professor Bay is fantastic! His lectures are so interesting and fun. His knowledge of the subject is incredible. He's always willing to work with students and help them succeed. No textbook but lots of novels. Reading is very important, do it on time. Lot's of memorization too, but it all connects together nicely. Wonderful class.
Professor Bay really wants students to learn the subject and not just get good grades, but his teaching style doesn't accomplish this: (1) whenever I asked a question he starts answering before I finish the question and then trails off to another topic without ever answering. (2) He can make you feel really guilty for not learning as fast as others
I took Greek 1 at another school, and tho Dr. Bay knocked it out of the park in terms of explaining things and taking time, the drawbacks of his teaching ways outweighed his talents. e.g: He's encouraging, but reading schedule is unachievable. He's fun, but giving grammar rules nicknames is confusing (chameleon participle, dragon clause, +.).
Dr. Bay requires a lot of reading for his class, but I could usually get it done between 1-1.5 hours. There are daily quizzes and one essay, along with essays on his test. His lectures are really entertaining and I absolutely loved this class. He does go on rambles and gets off topic bit so the end of the semester is a bit rushed but still good.
Professor Bay is engaging when lecturing, but gets side-tracked which affects our time in learning the required material. I felt that his course had little structure, there was no study guide for the midterms or finals which was frustrating. He's also hard to reach via email or out of class. Also lots of reading.
Doctor Bay is one of my favorite professors. He knows his subject well and kept us all entertained with his stories and course material. The class was very difficult with a lot of required reading, but if you're in class and pay attention (take notes, it helps) you'll succeed.
Professor Bays lectures are fascinating! He tells you the coolest and funniest facts about Greek history. Its exciting to go to class and he is the nicest dude ever. Tests arent bad and neither are the in class quizzes!
BROTHER BAY IS SO CUTE. He looks like Sean Connery in Indiana Jones. This is a super easy gen ed, and you can totally get away with sparknoting the readings. please take this class for the civ credit. pay attention in class. 2 midterms, a term paper, and a final. easy money.
Professor Bay is quite literally one of the best professors at BYU. He is incredibly patient and is totally willing to work with you if you miss some assignments or have other hiccups with coursework. He's an engaging and loving teacher. Cares deeply about the well-being of students. Loved, loved, loved this class.
What a great professor. Lectures are engaging and informative, though sometimes get off track. The final is a lot harder than the midterm, but throughout his lectures he shows you which sections could be quizzed in it. If you pay attention and can write well this class is easy
Dr Bay is awesome. He really values participation and knows how to encourage it. His tests are detailed but not unfair. We had a short quiz each day in class on the readings, but if you read the text, you can get 100 on all of them no sweat. Even sparknotes can get you a 3 or 4 out of 5 most days. He keeps lectures interesting, and makes class fun!
You can tell that Brother Bay really cares and is excited about what he is teaching, and he makes it exciting for the students to learn as well. There was a small quiz at the beginning of every lecture, but if you did the readings, it was pretty easy to pass. Most of the lectures allowed for class discussion, but some were purely lecture.
Dr. Bay is so kind, and he is very interested in his field. He'll teach you anything and everything you want to know. If, like me, you don't want to know, it could be a long class, but he always includes little tidbits in lectures that give it something for everyone. Did you know there was a roman god of wheat mildew?
The worst professor Ive had at BYU. Not easy to work with at all, and it doesnt matter how long you work on the writing assignments given, they wont be good enough. You read so much and in such little time. He is solely lecture based so if youre a visual learner with powerpoints DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
This is the absolute worst class I have taken at BYU. Test questions are from tiny details in his horribly organized lectures. Unless you have photographic memory and can memorize quotes from random pages he expects us to read, good luck on getting a passing your tests. Also, he's unable to answer questions in class and is not helpful. 0/10
Bay is such a sweet man and I really liked him. This class just wasn't my thing. lots of reading and lectures feel a little disorganized. two midterms but they're pretty hard. one or two papers. TA's are awesome and great at helping. Interesting topics. for a class I had to take, Bay was a great choice!
I absolutely loved Dr. Bays class! I had an extremely tough schedule semester, so this class was a breath of fresh air. Dr. Bay leads very interesting and engaging lectures, and graciously facilitated class discussion. Only two essays, two midterms, and a final. He assigns reading every class, but the text is fascinating. I would highly recommend!
I LOVED this class. At first it was a learning curve because you have super specific quizzes based on the reading. But you get used to them and TAs will work with you if you ask :). He is super passionate about his field and I felt like he graded tests and papers very fairly. Made me fall in love with the classics- take this course for civ credit!
I took a graduate seminar class from Bay (not listed) and it was one of the best classes I've ever had. Life-changing! He's really fun and funny, very smart, and super interested in what we as students had to contribute. It was an ideal seminar-style class. Lots of reading, but it was all interesting. Very open-minded, thoughtful guy.
Good guy but this course is ridiculously hard. 65 pages plus of extremely boring reading given before every class. This is not a history class but a book club. You have quizzes every class period on random details from your reading. Tests include random quotes from the books. Save yourself the hassle and don't take this course.
This class is cool because you read so many good books such as the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, and Divine Comedy (plus Cupid & Psych and The Bacchae). Each reading assignment (2 a week) took approx. 3 hr but I did take detailed notes while I read. I studied hours for the exams but always got an A. Interesting and insightful but also challenging!
I LOVE THIS MAN--TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM. My brain was blown and absolutely fried after some of his lectures, but I LOVED them. SO MUCH READING. 100-180 pages a week. Sparknotes WILL NOT do. Daily quizzes on reading. Get a study group! 3 exams (multiple choice, free response, and essay; 2-3 hrs), 3 small easy writeups, and one essay.
Dr. Bay is a master of his craft. He is an expert storyteller and is incredibly well versed in the intricacies of classic works. Every second in class was deeply engaging. Few professors have the enthusiasm for their area of study like Bay does, he teaches with a clarity and a passion that is unmatched by any professor I have taken at BYU.
Brother Bay is officially my favorite professor!! He's incredibly passionate about his subject, and his excitement and enthusiasm make for super engaging lectures. True, some of those lectures aren't the most organized, but he makes "term lists" for you to fill out, which cover everything he puts on the exam. If you pay attention, you'll be fine!
I took this class last year actually but had to come back to leave a rating. One of my fav prof at BYU. I want to go sit in on his other classes just to hear the lectures. Lots of reading, I didn't take notes and did fine on the reading quizzes. Make sure you get the term sheets filled out for tests. He is freaking awesome, makes it so interesting.
LOVED professor Bay! He is super kind, just the kind of professor that makes you want to come to class. Short 5 question quizzes on the reading each class (multiple choice) and interesting lectures! Tests are easy if you use the term lists to study and have done the reading. TAKE THIS CLASS!
I LOVED Professor Bay, he was absolutely amazing. Yes, there is a lot of reading and a quiz every day, but if you pay attention and fill out the term sheets (which he gives you in advance) you'll do fine on the tests. 10/10 recommend he made my semester, I always looked forward to this class.
Insanely good lecture and clearly passionate both about classics and also about imparting his knowledge on to the next generation. Lectures were not only engaging, but entertaining to the point where showing up to class was more interesting than pretty much anything else I could've been doing. Absolutely fantastic prof.
I LOVE Stephen and Nicole Bay! If you can take UNIV from them, do it! They brought us cookies each Monday, invited us into their home for dinner, and were super caring all the time!
Goes off on tangents but absolutely love this professor, he sets his students up for success. Reading quizzes at the beginning of each class. Exams has a quote section, matching, and essay. Not curved but not cumulative so put aside a good chunk of time to study and you'll be okay. Gives quotes during class so pay attention.
