This Guy is the man, ive learned so much already, i thought i was gonna hate college english but i love it
I love this teacher, he is extremely attractive/witty. I looked forward to attending his class...(not just to look at him ofcourse)
He is a very hard teacher. Hard to understand and too smart for LU. He needs to be teaching professional english scholars at Harvard!! WARNING: DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HATE READING in OLD ENGLISH LANGUAGES!!!!
Really nice guy. Bad teacher, hard grader!!! You will never use the textbook so don't buy it!!!
I took both 102 and 220 with professor Bell and strongly disagree with most of the reviews here. He is very intelligent, and has been my favorite teacher at liberty. We used all of the texts frequently, and they are even worth keeping after the course. He bestowes a rare passion for the subjects on all of his students. Take his classes!!
Professor Bell is awsome. He's funny and really breaks down and explains the reading causing you to understand the impossible to read stories alot better. TAKE HIM if you want to learn and not work way to hard for it. Otherwise take Professor Davis.
He is very fun, engaging, and casual. really makes an effort to know everyone. While he does require effort, if you just do what you're supposed to then you will get a good grade. he was always more than willing to go over papers with me, and he was excellent and breaking down texts to better understand them. a real passion for his classes.
This guy is the best english teacher at liberty if you want to truely learn and have a good time take Bell. He will challenge your mind but thats what good teachers do. He truely has a passion for english and he is always very well prepared for class. My favorite teacher so far. Def a MUST TAKE
Such a cool professor! very funny and interesting, but he is a very hard grader. I came into the semester thinking I wrote good papers. came out thinking im always awkward and unclear! Nevertheless, he was the class that I learned the most this semester!
he's pretty flippin awesome
AWFUL!!!! BEWARE: DON'T TAKE PROF. BELL! HE IS CRAZY!
Great Guy! He is difficult, but he makes the class fun, and I always look forward to the class.
He is an awesome teacher!!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! Don't take him. At first he seemed cool, down to earth, and like he was interested in his students. But once the semester kicked in, he proved my first impressions wrong! His merciless grading, and reviews seemed unprofessional. Unless you aren't an English major, I wouldn't take this class.
I love professor Bell!!! The poor reviews are from people who don't want to work for anything. Bell's class is amazing, but you do have to work for your grade. He does grade hard, but fair. My writing and understanding of literature grew so much during this class. I would definitely take him again in an instant.
He isn't easy, but I LOVED his class. Sometimes I think he's a little crazy, but he's a great teacher, makes class fun, but also requires you to do work. I would definitely take him again. I don't even like english and I'm a terrible writer, but he made it one of my favorite classes.
Professor Bell is a really good teacher...He understands that students are busy and what they go through in school. He is a young teacher so he remembers what its like to be in your shoes. His discussions through literature are always interesting and projects and paper are actually fun! This class is not a 'give you an A' but is challenges you!
He made lit interesting. As long as you pay attention, you should have a great time with it. The essays are the only real homework, just make sure to apply yourself when writing them.
Professor Bell is GREAT! He's intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. He is so much fun in class. I absolutely cannot wait to take another class with him!
I really enjoyed him as a professor. He does a good job of keeping your attention, even in the early classes. He was easy to approach and took time to learn all of our names. However, the readings were long and boring! I read every reading and was still lost during class discussion.
He is an Amazing teacher, I had him for Engl 102 so i had to have him for 221.
I enjoyed this class, but the grading was tough
Stephen Bell is arguably one of the most intelligent and engaging lecturers that I have ever had the pleasure of studying under. My only qualm with his methods are that his commentary on major works (e.g. Papers, Projects) are scathing to the point of being dubbed fiendish by some. In a style reminiscent of a Youtube commenter, Bell can be vicious.
Great professor. You can tell that he's really passionate about the literature and that is contagious. He's wicked understanding of his students and makes a serious effort to get to know everybody. He's a tough grader on papers, but that just motivates you to be a better writer. Quizzes are easy as long as you do the reading. Great class.
Amazing proff! He learned everyone's name in a week and made a point to build relationships with his class! He is by far the best lecturer i have had at LU and at my other college as well! He is incredibly smart and knows so much about his subject!
Alright, Bell is one of THE best teachers at Liberty. Mr. Bell tries to form a relationship with his class rather than teach the material and move on. His lectures are very enjoyable because he keeps you involved. Grades your essays hard, but ask him for advice and your much better off at succeeding. WOULD RECOMMEND!!
I hate English with a passion, I just do. However, Professor Bell is by far one of my favorite professors I've had thus far. He is a tough paper grader, but his singing in class makes up for it, haha. Plus, class is actually fun. Take him.
He's such a good teacher!! Amazing!
He was really good
AMAZING!!!!!! Take him!!! He is funny and interesting. His grading on papers is a little tough, but he tells you exactly what he liked or disliked on your papers and is willing to help you improve. This is the best recommendation I have ever received and I wish I could have him for every English class. Take him.
Great Prof! Lectures are usually funny and informative. If you read the book and pay attention, class isn't too tough. Best ENGL prof I've seen.
I love Prof Bell. he is extremely funny and if you participate, he will get to know your name. The interaction is great I normally do really bad at tests but he is not out to get you and as long as your reading and paying attention you will reap what you sow
Bell is a great lecturer, he's interesting to listen to, his midterm and final are easy and his papers are short. His reading requirements however are too long. You will frequently be required to read 100-200 pages of the text between classes, and he quizzes on relatively obscure details. Don't take his class if you don't enjoy old literature.
Prof. Bell is an amazing teacher. He really cares for the students and tries to remember his students' names and by the end of the semester he knows all of them by their name. He makes any literature interesting and gives fresh perspective :)
Great teacher, super energized, lots of stories and movies
Probably my favorite professor so far at Liberty. Even if you don't like English at all, he makes it interesting and relevant. Very energetic and keeps your attention easily through class discussions. However, he is a semi-tough grader when it comes to papers.
He was very funny and a great man of God, but his pop quizzes were terrible. They were questions that no one could comprehend, but 10% of your grade is strictly attendance, which is nice!
He's like that cool youth pastor but a rock-solid teacher. I fully enjoyed his class, his lectures, and his sincere convictions about the Christian life and having fun. I am a good writer and I would say he grades fairly tough on papers, but he'll get you through. You won't regret taking him. Promise.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes the subject funny and interesting, all while encouraging you to learn. I would recommend to anyone.
Bell is one of the funniest teachers in the entire school. However, he lacks clarity on the papers and grades them quite strictly without explaining how he grades papers (rather different from engl 101).
To start, I will say that this professor is very funny and entertaining. However, he is one of the worst graders I have seen. It's not just that he does not grade well, but that he is unwilling to spend time and help you get a better grade. He's a nice guy, but I would never take any class by him again.
You should hope that you understand all assignments, and have no problems. Bell is singularly awful at helping students. If you don't understand the guidelines he wrote, he'll simply tell you to read them again. Additionally, his conclusions are wacky. Beowulf is about, I quote, "Vikings killing the homeless." Take this class with another professor
I was disturbed by the amount of homosexuality Bell brought into the Religious Issues in Dramatic Literature class. A Winter's Tale is not a Queer Love romance. If anyone raises an objection to his opinion Bell gets loud and angry.
This is becoming a circus. I am a history major. Still, I had to take this professor for required English. It was an awful experience. He mocked the students and did not answer questions. I passed with an A+. Still, let us be honest, he is not great.
Do we got to show off our grade to prove this isn't a circus right now? Bell gave me a B+. That was easy. The not easy part? Was definitely Hearing his theories. That Beowulf and Fairytail stuff is all stuff he said.
If I had one hour to live I'd spend it in this class because it felt like an eternity.
I absolutely loved this class and the professor. Prof Bell was well prepared for class and showed incredible mastery of the subject. He goes out of his way to present course material in fun ways that help reinforce the readings. Would recommend to all my friends!
I really appreciated how Prof. Bell knew all our names within the first few weeks of the semester. It made me feel like my opinions mattered. Bell is one of the friendliest, most helpful teachers at Liberty. He always integrated a solid biblical worldview into class discussion. He made old stories so relevant and meaningful!
The guy's nice. Take this class if you want something funny and easy. Very easy. I did not try and received an A+ . But in my opinion he did not know what he was talking about. Think about a high school student lecturing on books he has not read.
Professor Bell's lectures were brilliant, and he definitely had a great grasp of the material we were studying in the class. He always showed great enthusiasm every day in class. I love the subject of English and he fostered that and helped me to attain a greater understanding of what it is about the subject that I love so much.
Mr. Bell is my favorite teacher at Liberty so far; he showed a great mastery of literary understanding and his love of the class was obvious and encouraging. His desire for us to become active readers and to critically think through the texts has made this the most productive English class I've ever taken.
I'm not sure if Prof Bell knew what he was talking about or not. Friendly guy, but I couldn't figure out what he was talking about. I earned an A+ by guesswork.
I'm currently taking this class and I regret it every period. Bell has no idea what he's talking about; every interpretation he offers goes against the text of works we read. It's the easiest grade on campus, yes, but so much bull spills out of his mouth that the easy A isn't worth it.
I rarely leave such reviews as this, yet a friend convinced me that I should. Bell is a nightmare of a professor, although he is supremely easy. His comments on the literature are useless or unsupported by the text. I am very disappointed.
Bell is awesome. I don't even like English but I look forward to his class. And I don't like literature but he makes this class fun, interesting, and understandable. His class isn't too hard, only two 3-4 page papers during the semester and his two exams are fair. I suggest him to all my friends. He makes English pretty fun.
Dr. Bell is probably one of the best teachers I have had at this school since I transferred. He makes the information fun and interesting while you are also learning the material. He is so hilarious, ever class we joke about something or other. He is a great professor and I recommend him to everyone.
Professor Bell is a great person who is a joy to have as a Professor, but he assumes that all students taking his course understand the material and are on the same page. He will help you if you ask but he will expect a lot of self-sufficiency. Hey, its college though, isn't it?
If you have the chance to take a class with Bell, please do. His class is a little tougher than most, but he has great insight to the stories and makes the class extremely interesting. You will have to read a bit, but I mean this is college. He is an extremely genuine person and wants to see you succeed. Get to know him!
Let me start by saying that Dr. Bell is an awesome professor. I took a different class with him last year and I loved it which is why I signed up for his class this year. What I did not expect was for him to be extremely biased about the course material. He expected everyone to know and love the content as much as he did. I wish i didn't take it.
Professor Bell was awesome. He's one of the best professors I've had at Liberty so far.
Dr. Bell is an amazing professor and I loved every class I took with him. He is engaging, thoughtful, and encouraging. He ties the Gospel into the class not because he has to but he wants to, and his instruction is always insightful. He made me a better English student and a better Christian. You'll have to earn your grade, but it will be worth it.
NOT available even when he says he will be. doens't help much and doesn't keep his office hours. Sad for a professor.
Dr. Bell is one of the best professors I've had at Liberty. He shows mastery of the course content, and truly loves what we're studying. Even stories that I didn't like at first were made more interesting by his guided class discussions. I've taken him for 221, 222, and 306 If you have the chance, TAKE HIM!!!
Has high expectations but he makes you appreciate the pieces and desire to do well. Hilarious. Very personable. Encourages critical thinking and class discussions are always interesting
There were 10 novels on the assigned reading list, including two graphic novels. Fitting this much reading into 16 weeks is definitely stressful and difficult, but Dr. Bell makes sure that class discussion is not only enjoyable, but also interactive and memorable.
Dr. Bell really made me enjoy a required English class, which is hard to do. However, on our first paper I received C+, despite my belief in my paper-writing skills as a history major. He really helped me become a better writer. His lectures were the most enjoyable part of the class and look forward to taking his World Lit. class.
He is great at making the lectures interesting and usually hilarious. If you are naturally a good student and/or if you are good at reading comprehension with older English, then you may like ENGL221. It is a hard class to do well in, so I am terrified that I won't graduate this semester if I don't do well on the Final.
Best teacher I have ever had at Liberty! His class is challenging but he makes it fun and interesting. I have never had such in depth conversations than when I was in his class. Definitely recommend taking if you actually want to learn something. You must be prepared to work but it is worth it!
Dr. Bell is a smart, gifted professor. His enthusiasm for literature is infectious. He is a hard but fair grader. Yes, much of what is covered in class is subjective, but THAT IS LITERATURE. I recommend Dr. Bell to all of my friends, eng. majors and non eng. majors, alike. If you enjoy engaging, discussion based classes, take Dr. Bell!
A great lecturer, very interesting and engaging; the reading can be time-consuming sometimes, but is pretty much necessary to follow along with the lectures in class. But if you keep up on the reading, it is not too hard! Just take really good notes - Dr. Bell can get pretty specific sometimes. But I really love him and his teaching style!
Great guy, tells great stories and teaches the stuff well.
Professor Bell is an incredible professor! One of my favorites at LU so far. Very interesting and super funny. Be prepared for a lot of discussion and reading aloud, but he creates a pressure-free environment so engaging isn't stressful. I would 100% recommend taking him for your lit elective!
Hes a great and inthusiastic Teacher, there are two main papers in the class periods are mostly through pop quizzes and participation As well as exams in those two papers. He is a tough grader though so make sure youre doing the best of your ability
While prof. Bell is a very funny person, I would avoid his class at all cost. His grading style is quite impossible, and his test is even more so. If you want to pass his class, you not only need to be in class but be interacting as well. Also, be aware of his pop quizzes.
I absolutely love Dr. Bell. He is an amazing person and is more passionate about his job than possibly any teacher I've ever had before, as well as the most educated. I did not like his class, however, because he grades so unfairly.
Dr. Bell is hands down the best lecturer I've taken at Liberty! He makes you think about material even after the course is completed! He is hilarious, intelligent, and engaging. However, beware--he expects CLOSE reading and is a difficult grader (he often expects exact wording from lectures in short answers on tests). Study hard and you'll be fine.
Dr. Bell is one of my favorite professors from Liberty! He balanced academics and fun perfectly, being willing to joke around, but also dive into serious material. He was one of those professors who always had a line winding out the door after class. If you really want to learn English (or just want to have a good time), take his courses.
Dr. Bell is absolutely hilarious. Genuinely great guy, class times are fun. Honestly assigns a lot of homework for the class level though. If you're late on an assignment though, DO NOT worry about it. In my class, everyone is always late, and he's so lenient it just makes it worse next time. Makes me feel like I'm wasting my time by working hard.
You can tell he loves what he does. He makes you feel welcomed and important and knows you by name from the first day of class. He really pushes you as a writer, but doesnt make you feel stressed. Insightful lectures with some humor. I love this class and definitely recommend!!!
While this class may not be the easiest A offered on campus, ENGL 222 specifically is a class that will change the way you view the world. Each lecture was interesting, engaging, and left students thinking. Dr. Bell is a professor you will never forget and he integrates history into the class in a captivating way. I will take him again if possible.
Dr. Bell always showed up to class prepared to discuss the assigned reading, typically with a twist to "flip the piece on its head". Discussions were incredibly active and lectures were not boring. However, the pop quizzes can be difficult so read carefully. This professor also gave several opportunities for extra credit through out the semester.
I took ENGL 433 with Dr. Bell and I struggled, but I learnt a lot. I wasn't prepared for the workload and wasn't ready for how much reading there was. He also has pop quizzes you need to watch out for! While his class was difficult, he is super friendly and his lectures are amazing! I wish I could just listen to his lectures instead of reading
I had Dr. Bell as an online student so I missed his lectures like the in-person students discuss. This was by far the hardest class I had taken at Liberty. Tons of homework, reading for hours on end, huge essays, etc However, I did learn a lot and found the reading material interesting. Overall, I recommend but make sure you have other easy classes
I loved this class. His discussions are so engaging, and the two papers you do are really interesting and meaningful. He is always available to help you, and he's a really nice guy in general. The exams are tough but accurately reflect the material. Never skip class! (I madeQuizlet sets that you can use to study, just type "ENGL 301 exam 1/2/3" :)
Ive taken Dr. Bell for three classes (ENGL 433, ENGL 301, and ENGL 306). He loves pop quizzes so you MUST do the reading (especially in 433)! Amazing lectures, you should take notes because his lectures will help with his tests but discussion is good too. Very chill and nice guy, replies to emails quickly. Probs my fav professor ever!
His comments and feedback left no room to improve. One assigned reading piqued my interest so much that I wanted to buy a physical copy, but his feedback killed any interest I had in doing so. Could write the next great American Novel and still won't get above an 85! Beware! Gave 2 instead of 1 because there were some interesting assignments
Dr. Bell is hilarious, personable, and friendly. As a professor, he's a fun lecturer who makes the lectures engaging. But be warned. Dr. Bell likes to give many small pop quizzes, and he grades his students' papers harshly. Do not think you can write a paper and turn it in immediately- review it again or expect your grade to drop harshly.
Professor Bell doesn't seem to understand that most online students are attending an online course as a result of having jobs, families, etc. His course load is beyond anything I've ever experienced at Liberty. He is extremely picky in his grading, and even when he throws out a rare compliment, he still takes 10-15 points off.
I liked Dr. Bell, but I just didn't like this class. It felt like a chore the whole semester and I did not enjoy the reading material a lot of the time. A lot of pop quizzes so you can't get behind. Also, it would've been nice if he'd put more of his lecture points on the slides so I wasn't having to type my notes a mile a minute the whole class.
Professor Bell does was amazing. He is a hard grader, but he's also fair with grading. He shows excellent knowledge of the subject matter, and his class is the most discussion-based class I've ever taken. The coursework for this class wasn't too easy or too time-consuming, and all of it seemed important for understanding the material.
Dr. Bell is an extremely unreasonable grader. There is an abundance of pop quizzes on sometimes 60+ pages of material. As for grading essays, he is extremely nitpicky and will take points off for extremely subjective "wordiness". Unit exams are reasonable at first glance but he grades as if he has a personal vendetta. Skip him, if possible.
Very hard
Feedback isn't clear for papers and doesn't align with the grade sometimes and always tells a story in his breakout room.
He's energetic and passionate about what he teaches, but the class is hard. There's a lot of reading and he's a tough paper grader. The exams are okay if you paid attention in class, but be very specific on any short answer questions. Make sure to at least attend on teams for potential extra credit at the end of the year.
He is ridiculously hard to please. I'm almost 40 years old and I've written 5 books, 4 of which are published. I don't think I'm a terrible writer, yet all he has done is give C's and D's on my papers and criticized. It does not seem like constructive criticism, it seems as though he has impossible standards. Amount of reading is insane too.
Dude grades way too hard for an Engl class that you need to fulfill gen ed requirements.
Dr. Bell expects a lot from his students, but do the reading and participate in class and you can get an A. Laziness will not cut it (I fully admit that's why I got a B). He has great lectures; attend all the lectures and you can easily pass the exams. He also offered A LOT of extra credit. He is a tough grader on papers and expects precision.
Dr. Bell has very, very hard quizzes in this class. The reading is definitely necessary to achieve a good grade. However, his lectures are really thorough; pay attention and passing the exams shouldn't be a problem. He also offers a lot of extra-credit. He has high standards and will not accept late papers, but he is also very kind.
Dr. Bell definitely has high standards, but he also offers a lot of support. There's really no good reason to get a bad grade (mine was from laziness). He has great lectures that really delve deep into the literature; do the reading and listen to the lectures and you should pass just fine.
Challenging but rewarding class. Professor Bell has high standards, but the course material is engaging. Leveraging tools like unstuck AI alongside the textbook and class lectures helped me stay on top of the workload. Definitely doable if you're willing to put in the effort.
Professor Bell has been my favorite professor at LU! His class always went by so fast, and honestly I always looked forward to going to his class. While he does grade essays harshly, I feel like he is very reasonable and he offers lots of extra credit. He is a very kind person and he really makes you cared for, to put it simply, he is a DIVA!
He teaches interesting content! There was not much reading that couldn't be balanced with other work. I agree that he grades tough and does expect his students to comprehend his lectures in a certain way that I just couldn't. I took this in-person, and he does offer some extra credit opportunities! Liked his class, just hard for me.
This was supposed to be an easy gen ed class. With that being said, I was very disappointed with the grade that I received. I am normally a “A” student, and I finished with all A's this semester except for in this class. He took so many points off for small things on my various papers, leaving me with a C. Great teacher, harsh grader.
Professor Bell was one of the best professors I had at Liberty. He truly cares about his students and made lectures an interactive experience. I learned a lot and actually did not dread this class even though I did not enjoy most of college.
