If you tend to fall asleep in class, this is the class for you!His conversations are intresting and he sometimes uses You Tube for examples. As long as you do all your work come to class on time, you should be ok. He's very honest and he gives students the ability to express hoe thet feel. I truly recommend him. Hes Great!!!
Stephen Bess is a great teacher. He made english exstremly interesting, even though english is one of my least favorite supjects. I wanted to come to class rather than having to. If you have a chance to take this professor you should grab it.
Professor Bess is a great professor. He has a great enjoyment for what he does and you can tell that in class. He is a funny person that finds a good way to mix sense of humor and education all in one class. Show up to class, do the work and he will give you the grade you deserve. Take his class and you wont have complaints.
Amazing professor. His passion for the subject makes the material even more interesting. His personal contributions makes the class really fun and very unique. Wonderful experience, wonderful class.
He's great
He's A Great Teacher. Make the lessons interesting; easy grader; gives plenty time to revised the essays. However, his assignment sheet is really confusing. Sometimes he acts like a raciest. Overall, Great.
He is very unclear talk about his life experience as if we care. He is a navice
Mr.Bess is an over all good teacher. The only problem I have with him is that he sometimes gets annoyed when he has to repeat himself. He needs to know how to speak up and not inform us we have hw when we it's time to go. I like the fact that he lets us talk in class and get to watch youtube videos. He is not strict. Just get your work done!
He was a great teacher. Prof. Bess was accommodating to everyone and left helpful comments on papers. He likes people to participate in class, especially because 102 is a argument course.
FEW WORDS HAVE TO BE SAID by far the best English professor ive had. not only does he inspired critical thinking everyday at the beginning of class with a quote. but he is extremely helpful if you ask for help. not an easy grader, he makes you work for your grade. but in term. making you both a better writer and reader
Overall, he's an okay teacher. He is nice, fair, and laid back. Isn't overly harsh and doesn't assign too much work. However, if you're actually looking to learn and improve in writing, DONT take him! He doesn't actually teach, just talks about current essay topics. Also- takes a long time to give back papers. He does leave helpful feedback though.
Great professor, starts class with quote discussions. Participation is key. He likes to joke around sometimes and makes class pretty fun. We do get assigned homework from the textbook sometimes. Some textbook reading too. A couple of essays throughout the semester. One quiz. Ask for help if you need it. He'll make the efforto to help you.
Prof. Bess is a cool guy. He doesn't grade strictly off of what you receive on your papers. The key to getting an A in his class is to thoroughly do you homework and go into detail even if you feel your answer isn't correct. On the essays give it your all. Focus on the the format he ask for. Greet him every day. I deserved a B- and got an A.
He is a great professor. He is funny and makes this class enjoyable. You have homework assignments from the book, about 4 essays, and a presentation. Papers are long-ish, but they have to be because of the type of class it is. He also INCLUDES the works cited page(s) as a part of the essay!!! We also ended class early a fair amount of times.
He is an amazing professor very chilled an laid back when it comes to grading if you miss class he usually understands, don't just miss too many classes or it may affect your grade, turn in all essays he only assigns about 4 huge essays and gives small amounts of homework to make up the grade, but he has been one of the best professors at MC.
Overall, Professor Bess was great and he made funny jokes about the films we watched/books we read. My only issue with him is this: every movie watched and book read were about the same thing: African/black culture. I found the course to be quite limiting because of this specificity of material. It also made the class quite boring.
Professor Bess is a pretty good teacher. When taking this class, know that it will be very difficult to 100% on the essays. Professor Bess is very passionate about English and he will give you a good grade if you show that you work hard in his class and take it seriously.
Very funny. May seem strict , but if you need clarification just ask.
Professor Bess' class introduced me to "Beloved," which I can't imagine missing out on now. I also loved learning about August Wilson and Melvin Van Peebles. The grading process on the first essay was a little confusing, but it balanced out - do a thorough job on the writing assignments and you will do well. Professor Bess rewards effort.
Work hard on your papers and homework. Don't cut any corners. Do what he asks of you if he wants something a certain way, do it. Participate in class. I didn't, but I always paid attention. If he catches you daydreaming, he will have no problem asking you questions on the current discussion. Email him if you need to!
He makes the class very entertaining all while teaching us to be critical thinkers. I love his mind! He also gives excellent lectures and they do not feel like lectures. I definitely improved my writing by join his class!
I enjoyed Professor Bess's class. He made class enjoyable and he seemed very passionate about argument and English. I would definitely recommend him.
This is my second time taking Professor Bess. I learned a lot more than English. He's fair and expects college level work. He'll give you the grade you deserve. I recommend him to everyone. Because of him, I've actually retained some information about argument, English, and more.
Take Mr. Bess! He's seriously the best English professor ever. He actually makes class enjoyable and his lectures aren't boring at all. Very lenient. Totally recommend to everybody.
He is an amazing professor. He's pretty chill, but you still have to get involved. It's kinda hard not to get involved in the conversation but I strongly recommend him
Great professor and a very cool/chill guy. Would recommend for English.
Professor Bess is an easy grader and gives good feedback. He is very intelligent and explains everything clearly. Honestly, just come to class, participate and you will do well.
He grades fairly. As long as you do the work you'll be fine. But if you actually want to learn, you should look elsewhere b/c doesn't teach, just discuss stuff and watch videos.
He's a really nice and funny guy. Do your work (tbh, its a lot of work but he's an easy grader if you show up on time everyday and interact in class).
Hes super chill, really nice to talk to easy grader, gives a decent amount of hw but its all from the book so just read it and youll be fine. Great guy all around super easy on students coming late and unprepared
Very chill professor! Go to class write your four essays, two quizzes, few homework, one essay proposal, one bibliography, and prepare profolio. He gave the first essay as a diagnostic evaluation do it well cuz he will tell you later that thats the first essay. He gives Lot of time for the first 3 essays and only 1 or 2 weeks for the 8-10 pages.
Great guy. He's always striving to make the class fun and enjoyable. Only had about 4 essays and a few hw assignments. The hw assignments are all in the book but they aren't difficult. Barely used the book so would reccommend renting it. One bad thing is he takes a long time to give back essays and when he does there is not a lot of feedback given.
I am currently taking classes with Mr. Bess. Simply, the best english professor ever! Not only because he is a great human being, also he is concerned about his students learning.
He makes the class too confusing!!! If you want an A, don't choose him until you're in a pinch.
He rarely lectures or goes over reading. If he does, it's for a few minutes and then moves on to the next assignment. He assigns 4 papers throughout the semester and will allot time for peer reading and review. Show up to class and do the HW to get a good grade. He is a good teacher for those who do not require hand holding.
He gives four essays, lots of book questions, and rarely lectures. He's a funny man and will call on you if he sees you're not paying attention. He also loves playing devils advocate. However, he says he doesn't use blackboard so I still don't know what grade I have. He doesn't return essays and hw on time and takes a lot of points off essays.
Really great teacher, he doesnt like tardiness so make sure youre on time. Very helpful, gives you time in class to work on stuff. He does give several homework assignments so make sure you are always on top of things.
He is ridiculous
Don't back the essay Don't notice the grades Don't help students Couldn't study anything.
Shock because he doesn't teach, just discuss stuff and watch videos.
No matter how your essay is, he gonna give you bad grades. No turn back essay , grades also
He's amazing, the best choice as professor. His explanations are interesting and his way of grading papers is clear that gives you many feedbacks to improve yourself. He rarely uses the textbook, and he enjoys research papers with good intros, flow in the body, and great conclusions. Make sure that all your sources come only from the MC Library.
Professor Bess was one of the best professors I've ever had. Took his class for 101 and 102. He's chill, nice, and has a good sense of humor. His assignments are easy, he explains them in good detail and gives you plenty of time to get them done. His class overall was great, do your work, come to class and you'll pass. This ones it chief. 10/10
Bad professor
So many papers, hilarious, test heavy
He's an amazing easy grader, but some of the h.w were not specified the days they were given. Make sure you check your email whenever class is cancelled because he assigns work for the next class. We had peer review days for our essays and the final drafts were due later that week or the start of the next week.
Prof Bess was absolutely great for 101. He makes the class less tedious and tends to end class early or allow students time to work on assignments in class. 101 tends to be a very boring class, but he made it engaging and skipped over the stupid stuff like studying grammar. Great prof and definitely would take again!
Solid professor and really laid back. Gives you so much time in class to work on your essays and is helpful if you ask. If you need to be babied and have your hand held you shouldn't take him. However, if you are able to carry your own weight and just want to get this gen ed. over with then he is great. He's actually pretty funny too.
Most chill and easy English class youre going to find. His lectures are pretty dry and he doesnt teach much about English itself. Mostly tells dry stories and read lots of foreign stories that dont have much of a deeper meaning to them. Very heavy on African American history, if that sparks your interest. Easy chill class. Didnt teach me much.
Prof is laid-back and likes to cancel class every now and then. This man will also take his sweet time grading your papers and returning them with little to no feedback. If I rated him the same way he graded my papers, he'd get a 4/5 with "good!" scrawled all over his profile. Only thing he criticizes (unfairly imo) is the MLA format.
I loved taking Professor Bess, A lot of his course work will be based on Civil rights & African American history. I really enjoyed having him as a professor. If your into civil rights like me you will love this course. He is always willing to help his students.
His lectures arent really focused around any specific criteria, he mostly tells stories for the remainder of class time after a warm-up question. His feedback on graded essays are not the greatest. Very heavy Im African American literature if that interests you.
Super picky with MLA. He makes fun of students who ask questions and tries to be funny. His feedback is heavily based on MLA so make sure you know how to write in MLA format even the smallest details. Also, make sure you have the book because homework is based on certain pages.
Strict on grammer!
He is very chill and often gives us days off when things are slow, or when were doing a big paper. He is very strict on grammar when grading , and he is very understandable with late work. He s easy to reach out to as well.
Professor Bess is amazing! He knows what he is talking about, loves to introduce us to minority authors, and builds relationships with the class. He shortens class a lot to give us time to work on our papers, gives discussion time in case you need some ideas of what to write about, and quick to respond to emails for help.
Professor Bess is awesome. He is personable and shared quotes from historical figures each class. He is incredibly wise, and happy to help with any questions. If you're debating between 2 professors, go with Bess!
He is chill but shortens every class and cancels a lot. He doesn't teach, we just watch youtube videos that are unrelated to our assignments and discuss about it the whole class and then he lets us go. He takes foreverrr to grade assignments. You won't know what grade you have in the class or on the assignments. I would not recommend taking him.
I took Professor Bess's class on zoom and it was one of my favorite classes. Although the course was supposed to be 1 hr 15 min, he would always end after 45 min because he said nobody should need to stay online any longer than that. Assignments are clear and easy enough, participation means a lot, and he is overall a very caring teacher.
Everybody just wants a chill English class. No old lady yelling at them or deducting points for petty reasons. none of that crap with this professor. he cares about his students and wants a real connection between him and his students. He is extremely funny and insightful. Treats everyone with so much kindness. Do not miss out on this professor.
Had a discussion board due each week, and usually some other assignment. Had a few papers due, and he is a very tough grader especially about formatting and grammar. He also is big on small talk in class. But he is a very nice guy and the work isn't super hard.
Nice guy, but just pretty average all around
I loved taking Eng101 with Professor Bess! Be prepared for many essays if you take this course, no matter the professor. He's very smart, has lots of office hours, tells lots of his life stories, and keeps the class entertaining. He's kind of a harsh grader but if you go to class and do the work you'll be fine. Take Professor Bess!
Best English professor ever! Class was very insightful with non boring articles that were read for class discussion. Very understanding and gave us lots of time to work on our essays. If you visit office hours or ask him questions based on your essay, he is very helpful and kind. Highly recommend.
Really cool professor. Very down to earth and tries hard to make students feel welcome
Great guy, but seriously takes forever to grade. He will put your essay grades up RIGHT before the final, over month after you submitted it. I liked the readings he chose, but overall I don't feel I learned much from him. No rubrics, and it's hard to tell what he wants from you. There aren't many opportunities to raise your grade either.
He is a great professor but he can remove points from your essays easily
He is great, but his grading is based on simple errors. Just because you use a less familiar word, it seems like he's taking a lot of points, so you never know which specific word can match his expectations. (for example, he prefers "Highlight" instead of "emphasize" and will take out a point just for this).
He's caring overall, just really tough on grammar and punctuation errors. Also, sometimes he's picky about wording for some reason. When he gives feedback he'll pick on a random work and find a synonym word to it, then proceed to remove points because I wasn't thinking of that SAME EXACT WORD. Anyway, fun prof. just takes a month to grade essays.
He doesn't ever actually teach you how to write any of the 3 essays you write during the semester. He is a toughhhhh grader and only really cares about punctuation and grammar, not what you write about so be aware of that. Even when you make sure you have no errors, he finds one and marks you down quite a lot for it.
Honestly, what a great Guy. He is fun and it is also pretty easy to get a good grade. I recommend taking him!
Nice prof, a fun environment, and makes a lot of jokes. There was one assignment every week that was due Friday and not Sunday which was frustrating but it was easy assignments. There were 4 essays in the semester and wasn't terrible. Go to class, he usually lets you go earlier and he is very chill. just do your work and you'll be fine.
This professor is really nice and caring about their students; and tries his best to care about the class and them to participate, but when it comes to the papers he tends to be very tough and tedious when it comes to grammar and punctuation rather than the content itself. So be mindful of that; but overall the class is enjoyable and chill.
Does not go over any criteria and is very difficult to get in contact with outside of class. Doesn't show that he cares for any of his students and is not interested in getting to know any of them. Mainly talks about himself and does not ask for students to share or participate. Overall, makes the class feel very overwhleming and stressful.
Pros: Let's you resubmit essay if lower than 80%, not that much class time (for lazy students), ends class 10-15 mins early. Cons: No connection with students, grades mostly based on grammar, a little boring
Amazing!! Professor, indeed recommended for ENGL 101. If you follow every instruction, you'll be fine.
Average class. Gave us an essay of 8 pages as our Final Exam. He gave us a month to do it. Always clear about his expectations and answers any questions. He can be funny too. Would recommend, a solid professor if you want to learn.
he's alright, loves to talk about himself. He cancels class half the time which is good, but gives a lot of homework. he's strong beliefs, he often goes on political tangents and tends to pick on students a bit. Don't take everything he says to heart, because he talks within the context of himself and carries this tone of self righteousness.
Prof. Bess was a below average professor in my opinion. He cancels half the classes, which was nice, but the course didn't offer much learning. His grading was strict, with penalties for small details like missing a space on an ident. His Blackboard was extremely disorganized, with conflicting due dates and rubrics. I do not recommend taking him.
He's approachable and nice, will let u get outa class early. He gives a heads up at least 2 weeks or more before an assignment is due, which are usually on weekends. Pros: can leave early, approachable, clear on instructions and feedback Cons: tough grader
He grew on me as a professor. At first I wasn't sure if I liked him. Overall he was a good professor.
Professor Bess is a good person. Lectures are short and concise, also homework have clear guidelines.
He's a chill professor but I feel like he's a very tough grader. He hates wordy phrases and for some reason, he also doesn't like 'advanced' wording. Sometimes he's not clear with his criteria for essays but will help you out if you ask. I personally wouldn't take him again but if you are an excellent writer, you'll be fine in his class.
He expected us to know everything, barely taught, at least he let us leave early.
This professor is very clear with his grading and his criteria; however, he is a great English professor. If you need extra help, you can come to him, or he provides extra sources. Whether English is your best subject or not, he does a great job at helping you and understanding any circumstances that you have outside of class.
I've taken Professor Bess's English 102 class this spring semester, he is the best, hilarious yet challenging professor I've ever met. Whenever he would teach the class, he would make us laugh. When he asks us a question, sometimes we don't answer, but he would find a way to make us talk, which worked. I highly recommend, no doubt.
Made my friend cry in class. Is so passive aggressive and made me feel dumb when I asked questions. I guess he does reply to emails quickly.
He is for sure passive aggressive but his material is easy and we barely had class to be honest, as long as you read the grading criteria and abide by it your good. Also he doesn't like phone use in class btw, you'll get called on.
Bess is usually a chill person and sometimes lets us leave class early. I didn't really learn much from his lectures but he generally wasn't mean. If you want to save your GPA then I would not recommend taking him; he is a very tough grader despite having some good criteria and feedback. If you want to challenge yourself, then I would take him.
Be prepared for strict grading. I lost points for having too many quotes, wordy sentences, and even MLA formatting that other professors were fine with. He cancels class, but it's for student conferences, not because he's being nice. If you take him, make sure your writing is concise and your MLA is exactly how he wants it.
Strong personality makes for interesting conversation but unfortunately has an air of condescension and passive aggression
Insanely strict grader. He goes out of his way to find something wrong with every essay and is never satisfied. I've had significant points taken off for minor formatting issues (like a missed indent) and for word choice, even when it didn't affect clarity. If you care about your GPA, be cautious.
