so-so
Like above, So-So. He trys but Lectures just not clear. little homework. See him during his office hours thats the best time.
I love Braids!! Fun and useful to see how Professor Bigelow thinks about things.
Interesting teacher. He sometimes goes off on tangents. Amusing ideosyncrasies. Test and midterm was extremely easy...but that could be because the course was easy.
meh...he definitely tries. he just isn't one that has been gifted with teaching skills. his tests are reeeeeeeeeeally easy. the material is pretty easy though
He did go off on tangents a lot, and seemed nervous in front of the class, but he's genuinely interested in helping people do well. His tests were extremely easy, and homework was infrequent. His lectures tended to be a bit vague with references to 'clever things' that would make the proof work without a concrete example to intdroduce the idea.
he really is a good teacher. Everything is straight from the book and he really wants you to learn the info. it may seem hard at first but he gets you through it. If you take 108a make sure it's with him.
He takes a bit of getting used to, but in the end, if you're OK with proofs, midterms and final are pretty easy. HW is not to bad, either.
His lectures were boring and hard to understand. He tends to ramble a lot and go off on tangents. Overall he was an okay professor. The tests were pretty straight forward. CLAS helped me a lot in this class.
the most straightforward and easy tests i've ever taken. his lectures are almost impossible to follow though and his multi-media enhancements of lecture were useless. i hardly went to class but i had the best clas tutor ever and got an a.
He certainly knows the material very well. I found his teaching hard to follow most of the time. He was extraordinarily helpful in cases where I asked questions. If you take his course, I suggest asking for clarification or feedback, because he is very smart and he is likely to be able to figure out your errors rather quickly.
Loving his class, although many people complain about understanding him, I find that I you do some reading in the book/looking the material before the lecture it makes it far easier to understand. Personally I'm loving the class and he has a great personality, and is really fun to listen to. It's also pretty clear this guy loves math, and is a pure mathematician at heart. I've never really enjoyed math before his class, and it has turned me into a math lover.
Bad at teaching and boring
Bad teacher, goes off on tangents.
Terrible teacher. Lecture useless. Office hours also useless. Completely oblivious to the fact it is some students first Calculus class, and not everyone is a Math professor.
Hands down the worst professor I've ever had. I have learned nothing from the lectures, and the homework did not prepare me for the exam. This is my first time ever seeing calculus and now I hate it.
Bigelow (or otherwise known as Sbiggy) is by far my favorite math teacher I've had so far. His explanations can get pretty confusing at times but he knows and loves his stuff very well and if you listen enough you'll understand the material fine. He's such an awesome guy, totally recommend.
Great personality, but it's obvious he's too far in calculus to teach such a basic class. Smart man but find it difficult to lower himself to the basics of calculus. Homework was hard and not connected well enough to lecture, TAs help a lot and the tests aren't as hard as the homework. Also, he curves ridiculously, F = C- :)
Did not like Bigelow at all. Nice guy but garbage teacher. CLAS is what got me my B.
this guy is amazing. after just going to his review lectures just before the midterms and final, i literally learned all of calculus. i did not touch the book, as a matter of fact i didn't even own one and i still thought it was ridiculously easy. love this guy
He's a very nice guy and his grading is very generous. Its easy to get an A or B if you've taken calculus before. The tests are pretty easy. His lectures are hard to follow though. He only uses html format to teach and does not do example problems relevant to the homework. Easy grader, smart guy, but not the easiest to follow through.
Seemed like a nice guy but had a rather hard time actually teaching the course. Assumed we knew some of the concepts and kept teaching us things that he said "weren't important." TAKE CLAS if you take this class! Again a nice guy but a rather incompetent teacher.
He enjoys calculus, and knows it very well. However, he is not the best lecturer. He lectures entirely in html, which is both good and bad. The html pages are easily accessed outside of the class, but they are of lower quality than chalkboard notes. I suggest you read the book before attending class.
Nice guy and tries to be very helpful. However, it was impossible to learn anything more useful than conceptual ideas from his lectures. They had almost absolutely nothing to do with the homework half the time, and the homework was often very difficult. His tests seem easy when you take them, but were graded somewhat harshly. Curved my C to a B.
HORRIBLE! Lectures are unbearable because there is always a technical problem and he does a horrendous job explaining concepts. His pace is too fast and he cannot teach. He is a nice guy but not a good professor for math. CLAS was the reason I passed this class.
If you have never taken calculus before, think twice before having him as a professor. Nice guy, but I hardly learned anything from his lectures. The homework was very difficult and it was hard to find examples relating to it from the text. The only reason I passed was because of C.L.A.S.
Horrible Teacher. Do not take if you've never taken Calc before.
Taking this class was a huge mistake. He taught my math class by using a computer, and iclicker questions took about half the time. He expects everyone to have already taken calculus, even though most haven't. His class is extremely boring. I HIGHLY advise not taking this class.
Nice guy but bad at teaching math. Most people i know skipped lecture went to CLAS and got an A. I went to every lecture and every section and got a C. Gotta say he is a fair grader, he chose the higher of the two midterm grades because the homework was nothing like the exams. Avoid the Big low if you can.
Bigelow's lecture slides are very helpful because the examples he presented in class are there. Sure it's hard to read at first, but you'll get the hang of it! I referred to the textbook when I don't understand a concept. Overall, Bigelow is a funny guy that shows youtube clips time to time in class! Just stay above the curve!!!
Horrible teacher if you didn't take calc in high school. Homeworks are nothing like the tests. Unorganized teacher. Lectures often go off topic. Never even referred to the book. Try to avoid or only take if you have taken calc before.
I feel bad for the guy. He's probably a really great person, but the class is completely useless. He's not that great at teaching either. I got all my information from the TAs. Anyway, the class is pretty easy, and it shouldn't be that bad to get through it.
Not so good at teaching but his tests are beyond fair and the curve is helpful. Homework is hard like everybody said but most answers are in back of book and it has nothing to do with tests so not a big deal. TAKE CLAS IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE
He is very unhelpful to the class. The only reason the majority of people go to the lecture is for the i>Clicker. However, you do need to go to the lecture because he will add to his slides that he presents in class. GO TO CLAS, it will save your life. Watch out, the text book does not help you at all. Homeworks are very difficult, so be careful.
WORST PROFESSOR BY FAR. ONLY WENT TO LECTURE FOR iCLICKER POINTS. THE BOOK WAS ALMOST AS USELESS AS BIGELOW.
He is as useless as a snail. My friend caught him playing WoW at the library on the week of finals, when he could have given us the practice final exam earlier. I do not comprehend why he gets the privilege to be a professor. I am so confused.
Not a helpful Prof at all. Poor lectures. Hard homework that was not taught about. The curve was helpful to the students. I would not recommend him. Definitely take CLAS if you have to take a class with hime, it was a life saver.
Probably one of the best professors at UCSB. For 108A just do the homework and go to class and you'll get an A. He's really fun and really helpful. Notice, all the bad reviews are from lower division math classes. But, most lower division math classes suck anyway, he's amazing but 3A-5C = Boring, and that's not his fault. Take him!
Bigalow cares immensely. Most of what all of lower division content is dictated by the department. He does not choose this. Give him a break, teaching in front of 600 people is intense. At office hours he would spend as much time as needed for you to understand the concept.
Professor Bigelow is a fairly easy professor is you reached algebra 2 in high school. Seriously. I am a psych major and I already knew almost all that we learned. He is sometimes unclear but does try to make sure everyone understands the material and engage the class with the clicker. Useless book. Easier than the other 34A prof. for this quarter
Tests are fairly easy, and if the entire class does poor then he curves. Midterm was only 6 questions and Final was only 12. Class itself isn't too difficult, I personally didn't start learning new things until about 7 weeks in. Go to CLAS if you have any problems. Bigelow was a bit unclear at times, but always put forth an effort.
Easiest math class I ever took. Most of the concepts covered, especially in the first half of the quarter, were basic algebra most people learned in high school. Even when new concepts appeared, it was just basic derivatives and logarithms. Tests are easy as well, the midterm had only 6 questions and could be finished quickly.
Good prof. You should go to class. Really nice guy. Good at explaining stuff one on one.
great prof
make sure you do the homework and go to office hours if you're confused. really helpful and friendly professor!
Awesome prof. I didn't read the book and just went to his lectures. He's very clear in his explanations, and I understood whatever he said the first time he said it. He has reasonable expectations; not too easy, not too hard.
One of the best math profs at the school. Pretty clear. Goes over hw in class and in office hours. Tests are really easy. Good prof and a good class with him.
pretty much need to go to class but tests are easy and so are problem sets.
Lecture was fine, he was clear and easy to understand. IMPOSSIBLE tests, I am normally an A math student and I barely passed this class
He is by far the best prof in math department, super helpful! must went to his OH! i didn't do well on midterms but I worked really hard and went to his OH all the time, eventually got a A+ ;)
He must be part computer or something, because his lectures are robotic, boring, and borderline useless. His only emotions seem to be condescension and derision. Does not care about students or if they are learning the material. Has hard iClicker questions and then does a terrible job explaining them, if at all. Avoid avoid avoid!
Hes really funny and i like going to his class
Has absolutely no idea what he is doing. Ended up skipping more than half the lectures. Only thing that got me to pass the class was CLAS.
Very smart and passionate. Go to lecture and pay attention to pass. Tests are easy and mimic the Webwork/iClicker questions. TAs are helpful as well. You should have no problem passing if you put in an ounce of effort.
Easy class especially if you have done matrices/vertices in the past. (Or taking ENGR 3 at the same time). However, due to the class size (650+), he was unclear and hard to comprehend during lectures. His homework and iclicker questions should be the key to his tests. Good teacher, compared to the reputation of the other math teachers at UCSB.
Professor Bigelow is definitely one of the better math teachers on campus. He's hard to understand sometimes and is usually not clear during his lectures. He's a sweet man, though! Midterms were easy-got As on both. Final was basically the same format as the midterms but x2. Easy A as long as you go to CLAS and attend your sections regularly.
I thought he was a pretty good teacher. As the quarter progressed, I felt I adjusted more to his teaching style. Make sure you sit in the front of the class because it is easy to get distracted in the big class. Math 4A was generally easy and tended to be a repetition of the same concepts but with different vocabulary names. Tests are very easy!!
The online lecture notes were extremely helpful when studying for the exams. Make sure to go to CLAS and sections. (Miss 2 sections and your grade goes down half a grade A-->A-) Midterms got 85%, then 100%. Final 95%. Straightforward test questions just know the basics he doesnt try to trick you.
Bigelow's 4A class was an easy A. As long as you attend (and pay attention to) his lectures, they are clear and easy to understand. Both the midterm and the final were very straightforward (you are also allowed a note-card). The WebWork is insanely easy. Bigelow answers questions very clearly and is approachable. Great professor!
Hard class, wonderful professor. Dr. Bigelow is one of the most helpful professors on campus. Make sure to go to his office hours as he will often go above and beyond to help you learn the material. Teaching style is very straight forward, but this is much preferred to some professors that jump all over the place. Happy I took this class with him.
lectures and tests are straight forward, nice professor and helps to go to office hours
I love this professor!
This class is really simple. All the exams were easy and straight to the point. I attend lecture and CLAS but I don't think CLAS was necessary. He is a good teacher in lecture and office hours. Highly recommend you take Bigelow the math wizard of Campbell Hall!!
Two midterms and a final. iClicker points won't help you. Homework is sparse (5-8 problems every two weeks, ish) and nothing at all like his tests. The tests are purely theoretical. He tries to jump into theory before actually teaching you what a matrix is (typically it's the opposite). He's funny though, and an A on the final is an A in the class.
He is a wizard
Best math teacherprofessor I have ever had. So hilarious and really loves math. Just go to lecture and take good notes and you will be fine. The midterms are fair and there are no tricks- everything is pretty straightforward.
He knows we just want to memorize procedures and gtfo, so his tests let you get away with that. Pretty easy class. Funny guy. Somewhat unclear in lecture if you actually want to understand.
Bigelow puts all his lectures online which really helps. Allows a 3x5 card for 2 midterms and final exam. Clas helps you do well in the Clas. He made his tests pretty straightforward. Gives a little bit of HW, not enough to master topics.
One of the best math professors I've taken thus far. Ended up with an A by doing the following: doing MyMathLab hw (worth the investment, his hw is too short!), allowing myself to miss a couple lectures (slides are posted online), and CLAS (cannot exaggerate how helpful this is). I also felt like the book was pretty useless. Anyways, TAKE HIM!
Pretty straightforward teacher, and I imagine one of the easiest math professors at UCSB. His tests are pretty straight forward, but you'll have to do more than the homework to be prepared for them. His homework doesn't prepare you at all for his tests, so don't think that you can just do the homework and not study a lot and be ready to do well.
Bigelow gave great lectures w examples to reinforce the core skills that he expected you to know for the tests. The tests were straight forward and you'll do well as long as you understand examples from the notes. Bigelow held three office hour sessions per week and was more than happy to answer any clarification questions. Awesome teacher!
He's a hilarious guy and is loved by students. His lectures are good but I found his explanations a bit confusing. You get an A as long as you understand the basics of basics of the class. So the tests are really easy. Wish I could have got a bit more out of the class though.
If you attend lecture and do all of the homework, then you should have no problem passing the class. I would also recommend taking CLAS if it is confusing for you at first. Bigelow is a wizard!
Bigelow is clear and makes subject interesting. CLAS helps a lot. HW is too easy and does not prepare you enough. Midterms and final were straightforward except for TF questions.
Lectures are pretty easy to follow and the hw is so easy! You need to go to lecture because of Iclicker. Midterms and final were straightforward except the TF questions were kind of hard. If you get an A on the final you get an A in the class.
Bigelow is my favorite. My entire class was obsessed with him for some reason. The class was super easy, if you know what you're doing you'll ace it. I literally got 100% in the class (with the exception of iclicker, because I skipped a lot of class). Bigelow literally wrote a summary of each unit before the midterm (memorized it and got 100%).
Makes this class easy and is very helpful. He's also kind of funny. Go to class and you'll pass.
I can't speak to how Professor Bigelow is for lower divs, but I absolutely loved his Non-Euclidean Geometry class. He is great at teaching the intuition behind what is going on. The homework problems are really cool, and he helps get you started in class. Attending and participating in class will help you greatly to understand the material.
Bigelow has good intentions and tries to teach to the level of understanding of the class. However, the book is very vague and clear answers are never given. The grader is harsh and has different expectations than the teacher. I took this class thinking it would be interesting and on the easy side, but it ended up being much harder than expected.
Professor Bigelow broke down everything very well. Took S16 and the first midterm was very easy. Second was a little more difficult, but still very managable. Book was very clear and helpful. Final was difficult. Be sure to study.
great prof.
He's pretty upfront with what you *likely* should know. Very fair midterms. Doesn't try to trick you. Very reasonable amounts of homework, and if you need any assistance, he is more than happy to help you in office hours. Final was certainly more demanding than midterm, but it was still very much fair. Oh, and he curves a bit, too. Good professor!
Not the best for 3A, he assumed that most people had taken calculus in high school and is able to understand everything he says. 2 midterms and a final, iclickers, and section quizzes
Bigelow is really smart but his lectures are all over the place. He's pretty new at teaching the class. His lectures aren't too good because he doesn't really do many examples and he moves really fast. Luckily, his midterms and finals aren't too bad- he really listens to his students and he always wants to hear what we have to say.
DONT Bigelow if it is your first time taking Calculus. I took Calculus BC in high school and did well; however, I often found myself being confused on topics I thought were simple in high school because Bigelow's lectures were ALL OVER THE PLACE. His exams are very fair though. Grade on final exam could potentially replace grade in entire class.
Cool guy, tries his best and cares about his students.
verrrrry accessible professor!!! so nice!!!
His homework for this class was exceptionally reasonable, but if you're stuck, his office hours are extremely helpful. Really funny professor, too. He tries to liven up the place with a quirky remark here and there. Exams are very straightforward, and I always felt like he prepares you for them. If you can, I'd recommend taking him.
Many of his explanations are very unclear, and he rushes through them. And doesn't put effort into giving us definitions. Don't know what he's rambling on about 3/4ths of the time. Mumbles during lectures and trails off sentences making it difficult to understand. Speaks too quietly. I learn more from youtube than i ever will from his lectures.
Lectures are kinda fast but if you pay attention he'll make 4A really easy to understand
Such a funny and good professor. He isn't the greatest at teaching but his lectures are always good and really simplify whatever the textbook is saying. Tests are just like practice tests, maybe a little bit more difficult. He is a typical math nerd knows what he's talking about
Such a funny professor, we always laugh at classes. He really gives clear and simple explanation of 4A, but not so through. Little homework. Midterms are similar with practice problems. If you understand his materials on GauchoSpace and do homework, you wont be worried about exams. Overall, easy to get an A.
low responsibility; poor quality; even do not get familiar with his own PPT; teach wrong definition; the contents of exams and the things he teaches are totally different
Very clear explanation. Very clear voice. Great professor.
Lectures and homework are very good at preparing you for midterms and the final; straightforward class.
Exams are very similar to the practice/old exams he posts. Little homework and it is not necessary to read the textbook since he summarizes the content kind of well in the lectures. Do CLAS or read the textbooks if you want to really get the lessons though since his explanations aren't the best.
He is a great professor with a good sense of humor. His lectures do a good job of explaining course material and he posts all his slides on gaucho space. The midterms and finals are pretty easy as long as you do the homework and go over his previous exams that he posts on gaucho space.
go over lectures, do homework, practice tests u will pass this dude rly doesnt give a dam bout the class lol which mean u can get by with the bare minimum
go over lectures, do homework, practice tests u will pass this dude rly doesnt give a dam bout the class lol which mean u can get by with the bare minimum
He talks relatively slow and gives good explanations. The exams are very easy. He uses clicker so attendance is mandatory. Overall, He is a great professor!!!
He's cool, made math 4a very straightforward.
Best Math professor to take. Lectures arent too clear, but his slides are very straightforward and indicative of test material. iClicker is worth a lot and he uses some for test questions. Very straightforward tests, so make sure to review lecture, CLAS, and the book. Could've been a hard class but he made it great!!!
Soft spoken so t's hard to understand him in lectures, but iClicker was 10% of our grade so it's essential to attend. Not sure if he does this for every class but he said if we did better on the final than the midterms he would base our grade on the final, which brought my grade from a C to an A+. Tests were pretty similar to his "old exams"
I can tell he is a nice and kind guy, and I get a good grade pretty effortlessly. But I have to say his course may not be that easy for average students to follow. If he had let TAs teach complementary applications and geometric relationships in the sections, the feedback would be significantly better. Exams are not hard, and grading is TOO kind.
Nice person, but not that good at teaching. Lectures just go over the most basic concepts with not much further explanation, and I learnt more from textbook than his lecture. Tests are super easy though. If you just want an easy A then take him, but if you really want to learn something prepare to study on your own or go for another professor.
Honestly really disappointed with the class and my first experience with a "UC" class; it was made way to easy. It literally felt like a joke. I wouldn't recommend this professor unless your looking for an easy A and don't want to learn. He goes over basic concepts in class and is good at teaching them, but he won't prepare you for future classes.
Pretty cool guy id have a beer with him
Pf. Bigelow is amazing! This is my first quarter in UCSB and I did not get used to the speed of the over all system and the lecture speed at first. So I did poorly in my first midterm. However, you can use your final to cover everything! The grading system is wonderful, and the professor is super accessible and caring in office hours! Great class!
his presentations are organized and clear but he could have explained the concepts better. there's not much homework and his exams are pretty easy.
He was a fine professor for 4A, but his lectures could definitely use some work. They tended to be pretty scattered and vague. Office hours were helpful, homework was totally reasonable, and the tests were very similar to the practice tests.
He was great for Math 4A. He was funny and kept the 800 kids in my class pretty engaged with the examples on his slides. The homework is easy and the tests are very similar to the practice exams posted.
Good professor. Prepared lecture slides and everything on the test is from his class lecture. I bought the textbook but ended up never using it. The midterms were a little sketch but the final was very easy (I got 100% and I bet the class avg was very high).
bigelow is the perfect noodle of a professor. take his class if you can!!!! he explains concepts clearly and homework/exams are easy
Bigelow is a nice guy. During lectures, his explanations sometimes lost students because they were either boring or confusing, but his slides were pretty organized and he posted them on Gauchospace. There is a lot of iClicker, minimal homework, and the tests just get easier. His class is an easy A, but it might not prepare you well for future math
Clear lectures and homework that is helpful. Practice midterms and final were very accurate to the real thing. Makes random jokes in class too and is really nice.
Not a very good lecturer. It's boring, dry, and uninspiring. Homework and tests are straightforward. Overall an easy class if you can bear through his monotonous lectures and outdated memes (posts it online which I'll throw him a bone for this) Though a boring person to many, I cannot help but feel some sort of whymsical, caring spirit within him.
Bigelow is pretty hard to understand verbally, so pay attention to the slides since they have the most content. The midterm and final were both extremely easy, and he obviously wants students to receive an A. If you do the homework and memorize the concepts, you'll get an A.
It was his first time teaching a big class so he was not very accustomed to it. He made the lectures hilarious. Iclicker questions not based on accuracy. But I felt like I was memorizing the content rather than actually learning in the class. Struggled on the midterms but the final was made extremely easy.
I really enjoyed this class even though I hate lin algebra. The only complaint I had was the grading scheme: hw, quizzes, mt1, mt2, final were worth 20% each. I understand he did this to help us out, but for me, I scored high on the exams and low on the hw and quizzes, so I ended with a B. He's very helpful though and never condescending.
Not the best lecturer, but amazing in office hours, one on one. Interesting character who is very funny, but isnt too odd. Very standard and reasonable grading policies - weekly homework thats about 3-5 problems, a midterm and a final. He is a nice guy whos always willing to help and can explain things clear as day when you ask.
Bigelow is the best professor for Math4A!! Take his Math4A!!! tests and homework are very easy!! Easy A!!
