He's old, but cool. Hard to take notes because he rambles and goes off on tangents. Clear on expectations. No right answer, just be able to support your thesis.
Be in Class to take notes and listen. Because all he wants you to do is take a midterm and final and a some random quizzes (which do help your grade).
cool teacher, lectures are usually very interesting. method of testing= no scantron, all writing. can usually be made to your advantage as long as you know the general idea.
his style of teaching was great. used essay based tests and those were easy. i loved taking this class with him
He teaches in the critical anaylisis style, be able to support your theses. He wastes alot of time talking about things that do not matter to the course and he makes sure to tell you he doesn't like Rush Limbaugh the NRA and that he is a yankee liberal.
i enjoyed this class and thought that it was useful but still had some things i wasn't a big fan of. boyd gets off onto his own opinions and bias politics instead of the history we should learn but he is enjoyable.
It's true he is not objective. Be prepared to write what he wants. Otherwise, he is worth taking even though he strays off topic.
This was a fun summer course. Few essays that aren't hard... based on your opinions so there isn't a right or wrong (just have a support to your answers). He will wander off into his own thoughts but once back on track, he's a pretty good professor.
He is a great teacher. He gives a midterm and a final but you get the questions beforehand. He makes his lectures somewhat interesting. I reccomend him to anyone.
He's very laid back and keeps the class's attention with his jokes.
He is pretty funny and keeps classes interesting. The only thing about him is that in his class you only have a midterm and a final both written exams w/ quiz grades. Therefore it is very easy to fail if you do bad on one of the tests or miss class.
Since your grade is based on only 2 essays and he can take points away if he doesnt like them, you can get screwed over in this class like I did! I had close to an A and he didnt like my final essay and gave me a C!
hes funny...
Good teacher, keeps class entertaing. Not the easiest, and you have to go to class because he gives random quizzes.
If you are more of a multiple choice defined answer test taker don't take him. He only has 2 written exams, so the margin of error is slim in this class. Overall though, he is a good lecturer and somewhat funny.
Dr.Boyd is an awesome professor. He expects you to think (if you dont like thinking dont take his class) but he is fair and very entertaining. Most quizzes are opinion based and sometimes if you put anything he'll give you full credit.
a good teacher in my opinion, very informative and interesting considering the topics he has to go over for this class. he gives you a copy of the tests before you take them with what the IDs and essays are so you know whats on the test beforehand.
He requires students to use their brain. His lectures are interesting. He is willing to help students who need and want it.
he's a cool teacher, only two exams, midterm and final but he gives u questions all before hand, funny and makes the class interesting
only wants you to know what he thinks happened in history.. not what really happened - i give him a big F
All his exams are written, but if you go to class and get the lectures he gives you reviews so its not so bad. Just make sure you go to class cause he gives pop quizzes once or twice a week. Overall very smart and has interesting lectures.
The grade you recieve in his class is based upon 2 essay format tests. You get a sheet of paper with abt.20 phrases on it. You only answer like 9 of 20. When the test comes you fill in the phrases you know!
old smart cool
overall dr. boyd is a funny and informative professor. frequently picks on himself and is quite clever with his phrases in his lectures. my advice to making an A - pay attention, take notes, collaborate with others, attend class everyday or you will fail.
Dr. Boyd is an interesting lecturer. He frequently gets off topic but is always entertaining. He rewards effort; but you have to make the effort to get an "A". Your answers to the essays don't have to be "right", but you had better hav
This class was kinda hard. His lecture is totally different material from the book he assigns to read. Basically you have to teach yourself the book and learn more info from his lectures. Doesn't go over book material either. Tests are essays and phrases that cover material from book and lectures.
boyd is a nice old man. just go to class and take notes and you should be fine. the book isn't too helpful in this class.
hey stresses to check your sources..yet he teaches absurd liberal lessons and he thinks that he is always correct...but he's alright...no!! he's awesome. i love that crazy liberal!
You only have two tests for his class so if you mess up on one your grade is screwed. Plus his lectures are boring and not very interesting.
He is great
There was no reson to listen to his lectures all he talks about is grandma boyd and his daughter. the only reason you should go to class is for the quizzes (very easy not about history) and for the group assignments these grades really help. Easy class with essay tests.
find another teacher if you can, he wants you to write essays that sound unintelligent and pretends he wants a process of required thought behind them after he grades. bad lectures and he expects you to interpret history the exact way he does
great teacher!
His books don't help. Listen to his lectures, ask questions, and take notes. As long as you can justify your reasoning, he will not flunk you on essays and exams. He is a writer and historian, so your papers better be good. Funny, kinda boring, overall, nice guy, kinda tough. ask for help if needed
If you're looking to learn "normal history" don't come here. He teaches totally irrelevant things. His tests are essay but don't be frightened any answer will do. be ready to learn about pocahantes and john smith and others from a really wierd perspective. You don't have to learn dates which is a p
Boyd is cool. His essay tests are easy if you follow his format and write very clearly, with supporting points backing your main thesis up. Yeah some elctures can put you to sleep. Some are funny though. Hit and miss.
Boyd is fun. He does not only teach history, he teaches how to study it. You get two classes for the price of 1. His class and Methods. Professors like this teach more that one realizes (obviously), and I think only those who are seriously pursuing a career in History will gain from these type of profs.

He is ok.
hes a good professor and explains everything well if you read the book, he wonders of too much sometimes and gets really off the subject and can waste a lot of time, but other than that you will do good if you attend classes because the Pop Quizzes really can bring down your grade
Very good teacher. a lot of his jokes arent funny though. only gives 2 tests- a midterm and a final, but gives 12 random quizzes. if you only miss 2 though, you're still good. easy class though.
It was very hard to pay attention in his class because he would go off topic and talk about his daughter and his research...His quizzes were alright but the tests were a bit hard. You really have to read and study in his class because taking notes or paying attention won't do it for the exams. Passed with a C.
I read the assignments for the first few weeks but after that didn't read at all. I got a B in the course but should have gotten an A. I got a little lazy when the final came around.
Boyd was awesome. He's not about making you memorize facts but more about making you actually think about them. There is no wrong answer with him as long as you have support to back up your answer. He is funny and only give two tests. Watch out for the 12 random quizes though.
He's a nice guy. Liberal, but he will still hear the other side. His emphasis is on good writing and the ability to prove your arguement with historical facts. Tests are all written with consideration given to structure. You won't need to memorize random facts for this class. Don't worry about dates either. It helps if you can write well.
Hands down the best professor in the school. Clear, funny, and best of all--a LIBERAL!! Grades fair, tests all essay. Makes you REALLY think. Values each student in the class. Lots of reading, and studying. WORTH IT! I'm signing up to be taught by him again in the future. This man is the most brilliant professor I've ever had in my college career.
This guy is weird. I didn't find his lectures useful, and the book was a little difficult to read. Overall, I felt that this class could have been a lot better and a lot more learned if Boyd would stop talking about his wife and daughter and start talking about the information we are there to learn. In addition, studying for his tests sucks.
only difficult because he makes you think. overall great prof
second class i've had with this prof. if you know how to actually take notes, his tangent stories shouldn't affect your grade. it's not an easy "A" but getting an "A" is not impossible. very entertaining.
Boyd is a great professor but is sometimes hard to follow. he does random quizzes so it is mandatory to attend class. he has two major test. Mid term and final. Instead of a check a, b, or c he does it in essay form. Gives a great review for both test tho! great guy!
Boyd is a huge liberal that tells lame jokes and constantly talks about his "spouse" and daughter. Gets really off topic during lectures all the time, scatterbrained and impossible to take notes in class. Not an easy A. gives good reviews for tests, and random quizzes so you must attend class unfortuantely i couldnt stand another day
Very liberal and opinionated. Instead of teaching history as it was, he seems to reinterpret established viewpoints. Personally, I didnt like his lectures. Its not a difficult class, just show up and youll do fine.
This professor is tight
Although Boyd may go off topic sometimes, he is not just a teacher for History, but one of also methodology. he teaches you things that you will use in several other classes and despite what others might say is quite interesting to talk to.
Dr. Boyd enjoys teaching history and is very passionate about it. Very knowledgable. Lectures he gives are not as clear as can be. Talks about his spouse and daughters a lot. He also gives a joke of the day.But he gives a review to help you study for the midterm and final. You should definitely study for exams. Overall good teacher and good class.
This class is super easy... just go to class pay attention and do the test reviews and you will get an A. There are only 2 tests and quizes so u have to do good on the test. The test are super easy if you study. I studied for 2 hrs on the midterm and got a 100. he makes class interesting because of the way he teaches and gives a different perspecti
Hah, Dr. Boyd is awesome. I was always tired in class and his lectures can easily put you to sleep. Quizzes are super easy and he gives a midterm and final review, so that's all you need to be worried about. Overall its a boring (because I personally hate history) class but VERY EASY. Quizzes are sometimes given if attendance isnt full. I recommend
Good teacher, goes off topic during lectures, bad @ telling jokes but gives final and midterm reviews that really help. TAKE HIM
Dr. Boyd is a really nice guy and always starts off class with his "joke of the day" which sometimes are lame. He gives out reviews for the midterm/final so those are really helpful. Lectures are interesting although he does tend to go off topic at times. He's always willing to help you out so I highly recommend taking him for history!!
Boyd is HILARIOUS! Liberal yankee with tons of stories and jokes. Sort of scatter-brained. But very smart and helpful. I loved him! Wouldn't mind taking another one of his classes. However, you shouldn't take him if essays aren't your cup of tea.
Right off the bat, he told the class he is a liberal. Started the year off every day with a lame joke, but he was pretty good at improv jokes or on the spot comedy. His lectures taught me a lot and made me look at my own opinion of things. Only thing is, there is a midterm and final that is essay based.
Prepare yourself for incredibly bad jokes. Boyd is a very easy professor if you are willing to work for your grade. Reading the text is not necessary until the midterms and final, so long as you go to class. Make sure you take all the quizzes and do all of the homework. Write the essays in the EXACT format that he states and you should do well!
This class is going to be difficult if you can't write essays!!! Has essay midterm and final and some extra writing assignments along the way. Lectures are pretty boring and difficult to follow and to know on what to take notes. Nice man though and is willing to help you out. But if you can't write, stay away from this class...
Professor Boyd, was nice but arrogant, he never really answered questions but talked around them until he got off topic, (made one wonder if he knew the answers), he was boring and didn?t inspire you to want to know more about a topic, The class was a joke, I learned NOTHING and that pissed me off, all he seemed to want to talk about was himself
LAME jokes, he always talked about himself, and when he got around to the actual content, it was just a bunch of jibberish, I honestly learned nothing in this class, plus his grading technique pretty much stinks
Loved this professor; he loves playing devils advocate especially politically. If you write your essays the way he instructs you to (which is likely to be like most essays you write) there is no way to get a bad grade. He will work with you if any problems arise that cause you to miss class. I will definitely take more classes with him!
Boyd is a really good professor. Sit in the front and interactive with him and listen. If you take notes and reflect on them you will do fine. Only two tests, easy but all essay style. A lot of easy quizzes to get easy points. AWESOME PROFESSOR!!
I wouldn't recommend taking him unless you like and/or are good at open answer and essay tests. There are only 2 tests (midterm & final) and they make up most of your grade. He's not a very fair grader. He tells a lot of personal stories and cheesy jokes. I would go for another teacher.
His class is fun! I learned a lot and actually could relate what experiences he told us about to the material we were studying. He is a bit liberal and takes 30 mins. rambling on if you ask him a question but he is a great professor and wouldn't mind taking him again. We had almost no homework and the classes were interesting.
Great teacher but you have to take notes on what he says so pay attention, kind of, but gives you the main topics.
It is an easy class, you don't have to go just get the notes from someone who does and pop quizzes can be taken online. only 2 test though midterm and final. Easy I'm not the brightest crayon in the color box but this class is easy take it;)
Steven Boyd is a bad professor. All he does is ramble on and on. He is old man and wants people to like him. The class is not hard but listening to him talk for three hours a week is the only hard part. Do not read the books until the mid term and final. Easy B, if you work it is an A.
Dr. Boyd is an amazing professor. He is smart and very very sweet. Sure his classes can seem boring and sure his only two tests are essay tests and there are two papers that have no due date for his class, but if you read the book or even just hunt for answers from the study guide you will get an easy B or A. I recommend if you like early am histor
WOW WOW WOW! LOL read the book like once maybe,if that. Easy I like him & his corny jokes.LOL He repeats a couple of his jokes but he's a cool. Listen to the other ratings you don't need the book until about the week before finals. Go to S.I. sessions 2 weeks prior to mid-term & final and you'll make an A no studying need just cram the week before
imagine u r at a concert. the show lights reflecting off of boyd's balding head will blind u with amazement, u try to close ur eyes but the enzymes of the saliva from the words he screams eats thru ur eyelids and licks ur eyeballs with truth, giving u a new ability, rendering u able to see history thru an interesting new unbiased perspective...
he is realistic about kids comin to his night class and does not hold a grudge if u dont go. never once used the book...tests are all essay form and u can usually look up the answer online. somewhat difficult but if u study hard u will be ok. two papers due at the end of the semster. He is somewhat of a tough grader toward the end but he is fair.
Lectures are most of the time little stories, he brings relevant guest lecturers and yes essay tests. Is interested in student success and is very understanding if you make the effort to communicate. Is a lenient grader if you format it correctly.
Easy for me. I didn't go to class but that hurts you when you miss a pop quiz. 12 quizzes/homework and he drops 2. midterm and final are the only tests and they are hard to study for but then turn out easy if you study. I only had to work hard 2 times the whole semester. Not too bad
Professor Boyd really cares about the subject he teaches and his students. He's brilliant and insightful and obviously passionate about his career. Tests are all essays and it took effort to do well. But at the end of the day he was understanding and helped out whenever he could.
Just don't take him, he boring teacher, with stupid jokes he always repeats. I would not recommend him
Columbus to pre-civil war. 2 tests for the semester, all of it is essay form. 90% of the time, I had no idea what he was lecturing about. Rambles a lot. Never uses the textbook. Goes against a lot of what we learned in history during elementary and high school because "the history books were wrong." If you want an A or a B, pick another professor.
i actually learned a lot in his class. although i'd suggest going to class, as long as you attend the review and look over the chapter you'll be ok in his class. he has a midterm and a final that are essays and identification terms to be written in a blue book. he also has a few hmwk/in class grades (easy)
Ok professor. He kinda rambles on a lot.
I went to class all the time, his teaching methods are clear and if you take notes you'll be ok. There's only a midterm and final (essays) and quizzes, which are fairly easy. Some of the quizzes are just write your name on paper and turn in. Pretty easy class I got a B, could of got A but I messed up on midterm.
Not a bad class there are quizes but fairly easy. Midterm and final is essay.
I really like Professor Boyd, he is a great lecturer. I'm usually really bored with history but he makes it interesting. His class is pretty easy too. Favorite class so far.
Great teacher although he does ramble and go off on several tangents.. But thats what makes the class interesting!!! Easy to fall asleep and make an A. You just have to attend class regularly and take good notes. Keep up with the readings because there are group discussions over the material. Overall I enjoyed the class.
He is a very nice man. He does talk a lot. A lot of the time i was confused if he was talking about history or his personal life. He kind of sounds like a preacher. NO MULTIPLE CHOICE ANYTHING! you better be good at writing essays!!!!! this is what got me in the class. I attended every single class and still had to drop it right before finals. /:
I love this teacher. I'm taking as many classes taught by him as possible!
this guy is very entertaining. if you read and show up and study everything will be ok. KNOW YOUR MATERIAL! grades tough and essay based exams. even though i got a D in his class i was very pleased with his teaching. he gets the ball rolling with making you analyze and think for your own formed opinion! great proffesor!
Professor Boyd's lectures are very entertaining and overall he is a great professor. The class doesn't require much effort until it gets close to the midterm and the final. His tests (only gives midterm/final) are essay and he is an extremely tough grader. I received an A but had to work really hard starting a couple weeks before the final.
he spends the first 20 minutes of class just telling anecdotes about whatever experience he had that day. rarely stays on topic during lectures and is way too keen on being "controversial" instead of actually teaching content. it's very obvious tha he is a tenured professor. i do not recommend taking his upper division courses
If you dont want an essay test, then dont take this teacher. He rambles alot about his personal life and gets off topic pretty easy. There are also 12 quizes
LOVE this teacher! He's not easy, but very knowledgeable. He's very laid back, and gives great lectures.
Boyd is a good professor his lectures are somewhat interesting and he loves to crack jokes here and there to lighten up the mood. If you go to class, the Si sessions and write down notes during his lectures you will be fine. At the least you will pull a B.
Boyd is definitely old school. He only gives two exams, both of which are in essay form. Lots of easy in-class quizzes. Quite a few group assignments in class (easy). VERY left wing. It's hard to stay awake during lecture. Pay attention in class and write with a liberal voice and you'll do fine. Overall, he was okay; I didn't love him or hate him.
BOYD is a very liberal professor that doesn't mind speaking his views on politics in class so if you are offended by it easily stay clear. overall though his is an east take with 2 texts the final and mid term being essay and many in class assignments that are easy as well. the lectures can at times get boring and long.
This professors teaching style consists of lectures with some group assignments. He encourages you to think for yourself and be able to support your claims. The only tests were the midterm and final which were not multiple choice but fairly easy questions. He is very clear when it comes to what he expects in the assignments. This class is an easy A
Professor Boyd's lectures are very long, but an incentive to stay and listen is that after his lectures he will sometimes give out extra credit for attendance (after class). THERE ARE ONLY TWO TESTS--the midterm and the final. Both tests are only written answers, which he grades personally. Assignments and quizzes are done in class ONLY.
Want to give credit that she was given this Job last minute. Her tests were 30+ questions open ended. No power points, no text books... just figure it out by looking it up on the internet. Says she was supposed to be at the main campus but never came and super hard to reach by email. Her assistant was extremely rude by email/ will call you out.
