well presented, easy to understand, witty

Possesses a very dry-British humour but a very effective teacher.

Oh please..get over yourself!
ego rampant
Excels at his subjects
Knows his students inside out
"boring" - I'd write more but just thinking about the man makes me want to fall asleep
Totally boring and self-centred
Stunningly brilliant. Definately knows his history and can answer any questions. Very relaxed, easy going, funny and super hot

he better than wicken
Stephen Brooke is, hands down, the best professor I've had. So smart, funny, cool, interesting it's almost obscene. He is on my list of Hottest People Ever, and I'm a ****! Dresses like he's in a Mike Leigh film, and did I mention, SMART!
He can be boring, but I thought he was funny.
i dont believe each of those bad marks were diff. ppl.. Anyway, he is one of the best lecturers I have at york. He makes it fun, easy as hell to understand and pushes you to learn more. young, knowledgable in a GREAT COURSE! 1050! Highly recommended
Strangely hot, and a snappy dresser
i love him... great prof, very clear one of the bests
I think Dr.Brooke is one of the exceptional professors at York. I really enjoyed his letures and he made complicated historical events, easy to comprehend, as well as interesting. I usually find Histroy to be a long and boring topic but not with Steven!!!
Intelligent, witty, and very easy on the eyes in a quirky sort of way. By second term I think I only ever went to class when he was lecturing. =Þ
Stephen, is a magnificent professor. His lectures are straight to the point, and for those of you, who find histroy dull, be assured he makes the topic interesting and fun. He is approachable - easy to talk to and very helpful. The best professor I had!
i hated this course but i loved stephen. everytime he would lecture my friends and i would just clap and cheer with excitement because he is truly an incredible professor and lecturer. i wish he taught more classes at undergrad level! an inspiration!
Took a modern history course back in first year, Prof. Brooke helped me a great deal with my essay writing and made an ancient history buff interested in modern themes...great lecturer as well
i thought stepehen was amazing. this was the first history course i took at york and it totally changed my perspective on so many things. this was the only class that i refused to miss. he is, hands down, my favortie teacher. the best one i've ever had
stand up comic and a knowledgeable prof, brookes.
great teacher can't wait to take another class of his!
A wonderful fellow. Very helpful and understanding of what life is like in grad school. Will bend over backwards to help you out. Wish more profs were like him.
there's just something so sexy about him, regardless of that i love his classes. took this one just because he taught it. funny guy and makes lectures interesting. you can tell that he cares about his class. make sure you take at least one class by him, i promise youll love it!
The best prof I have ever had at York. He is very clear, exceptionally helpful and understanding, and utterly hilarious.
In my four years at York, I've never had such a DEDICATED PROFESSOR. Brooke will jump through hoops just to make sure you do well in the class. On top of that, he's an extremely fair marker and loves to make you laugh. He should be given a trophy of some sort...
Awesome Prof. who offers insight and guidence. He's very helpful, very caring, understanding. Witty to the max, take a course with him if you can... good luck getting in thou!
This course was okay. The professor was rather approachable and did get back to you in timely fashion. Prof. is able to answer questions on info he didn't include in syllabus, but is relavant to British history. Not an easy course and you have to work for your mark, but you do learn.
1 of the best profs you will ever have. He's passionate about British History & he wants you to succeed. He is a good & organized lecturer. Make sure you do your readings and participate (30% participation mark!). Essays are 25% and 45%, which is scary but he's helpful and understanding that it is really not a problem. The class was a joy to go to.
This class was a joy to attend, he was whitty and always made people laugh. He was able to laugh at himself and was very understanding with the complications of the strike. Take this class if you have a change, good movies, and excellent insight into British History :)
AMAZING prof! I loved his sense of humour and he really made British history quite interesting. In terms of essays, you really have to work to get a good mark, but the exams are quite easy as he lays it all out before hand. There is a lot of reading, but it's not too bad. TAKE this class, and you will not regret it! What can I say, but LOVE him!
He made the topics interesting and easy to understand. He is funny, charming and all round good prof. The best part is that he looks like a middle age Harry Potter and likes to make fun of the Royals. Great material but you need to do your work in order to succeed
Course was very coherent; driven by a clear central thesis. Interesting use of period novels, films, and diaries. Prof was excellent; enthusiastic, interesting, witty, well-read, and open-minded. He was also helpful, had clear expectations, and he was easy to get in contact with. Great constructive feedback.
One of my favourite professors. He is extremely intelligent and clear. He get's to the point and does not stray off topic. The class was interesting and I even enjoyed the readings and movies we had to watch. He is a normal marker, and if you do your best you will do well.
He is a phenomenal prof. and I recommend taking his course most definitely! His lectures are so clear and he organizes them by themes (makes it super easy for the exam which is based off of these overall "themes"). However, he is a super tough essay marker and you have to work for a good mark - so don't take his class if that's your weakness.
Interesting lecturer. However he treats students like children when discussing essays and assignments. He needs to focus less time in class discussing what we need to do to write an essay, in third year this should already be known. Overall, interesting topic and good lectures.
Professor Brooke is a terrific prof; he is not only funny but he is also incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about British history. His lectures are straightforward and he posts them online. Attendance is not mandatory as their is no participation mark, however, make the effort to engage because his classes are on point.
Stephen Brooke's is a great professor. The course break down may seem intimidating with only two assignments and the exam but he is incredibly helpful and his exams are based on the themes he breaks his lectures into. Furthermore, he uses PowerPoints which makes it easy to study for the exam and his humour makes a 3 hour lecture bearable.
Ok, yes I said he was an easy and clear professor, but remember all marking is done by the TA's. He was really funny and interesting when he taught, super informative and often interacted with the students. Ex. during the strike of 2015, he was my only prof who emailed us updates regarding the matter. So if you have him and a good TA, your good!
Amazing Professor... Seriously considering taking his British History Class next year. Also: very easy on the eyes
This professor not only deserves professor of the year, he goes to great lengths to address student concerns on understanding the presented material. If you take his class, clarity and conciseness will never be an issue. All you have to worry about is selecting the RIGHT tutorial session. Oh, there is a lot of course readings :)
I loved Prof Brooke's class and would definitely recommend it, either as a 1st year history course or a humanities (gen ed) course. The topic is very interesting and he is a great lecturer. The amount of reading and writing required is fair and average, and he doesn't overwork his students. Attend lectures and do readings - you'll get an easy A!
I would consider his teaching tone as monotone but that didn't deter me from being interested from the course material. Professor Brooke's powerpoint slides were direct and simple to follow along. There were a decent amount of readings but they weren't boring reads whatsoever. Overall, I recommend this course and Brooke was a great professor!
Professor Brooke is clear, concise and ensures his students understands themes and concepts. Assignments are clearly laid out and fairly marked. Posts all lecture slides before classes and sticks to them! TA's are great!! Hope to have him again in the future.
Very good prof. He takes the second half of British History 2400; the 18th C to present. Very, very smart and knowledgeable. Really takes the time to make a strong argument and tell a clear story. Very clear about what you need to study up on for exams - questions given out in advance. His whole tone is very relaxed and he can be very funny.
So far he is my favourite prof! Lectures can be a bit dry sometimes but Prof Brooke makes sure to make everything as easy as possible to understand. His powerpoint slides were also very simple to follow. There are a few essays in the class but they are all extremely straightforward and you barely have to read the books to do very well on them.
Prof Brooke saved my history class for me. He came in for 2nd term and made everything instantly better. He's so funny, a great lecturer, and is really understanding and helpful when it comes to learning the content and doing the assignments. I can't recommend him enough! And he's rather good looking as a cherry on top of everything.
He's an amazing prof and his lectures are very organized and detailed. He makes things easy to understand. A lot of people found the course hard as we had lots of readings each week and a lot of papers to write with the 5% off every day late penalty. I worked really hard for my A. TAs mark the essays tho. He is very caring and kind regardless.
A very nice, caring, and thorough prof. I had a great time taking his class and would definitely take more classes with him in the future.
He is so passionate in what he teaches, makes it so much more easy to understand materials covered in lecture.
Best prof this semester. Super intelligent and willing to engage in thoughtful discussion. Exemplifies a university standard for teaching. Organized and caring. Responsive to students. Class is interesting and engaging, even for a person who doesn't consider themselves that into history. More like cultural studies, actually!
I took this course because it fit my schedule... I got so lucky! One of the best profs at York. So interesting, engaging, fun AND bonus: easy A.
This course was interesting, easy, and well taught. I would recommend this course if you want an easy credit. There were 4 essays, and a multiple-choice (open book) quiz every few weeks. Overall this course and professor were amazing. The professor was also very helpful and understanding.
My favourite York professor by far was Professor Brooke. His lectures were interesting, fascinating, and understandable. Overall, he was a great lecturer who was funny, relatable, and easygoing. He had a great ability to create an inviting and enjoyable atmosphere. If you have the ability to take this course, I recommend it 101%!
Very relaxed and knowledgeable professor. Explained lectures and topics on Paris and London interestingly and with lots of engaging photos, videos, and readings. Highly recommend this great course and professor to broaden your understanding of the history and culture of European cities:)
This course is very heavy for a 1000-level class. So many papers you are drowning in historical readings almost monthly. This class is also marked way too harshly for being a first-year-level course. Lectures are lengthy and informative and the quizzes are solely based on lectures. take at your own risk
I took this course because I needed a Humanities requirement for my degree(Faculty of Health), and not coming from a history background Professor Brooke make HIST 1095 a really enjoyable class. There are 4 open-book tests worth 5% each (super easy), and also 3 short essays worth 15%, and 1 final essay worth 20%. Highly recommend. Amazing Prof!!!!!
Prof. Brooke is hands down the best professor I have ever had. HIST1095 was a year long course and each lecture was always the highlight of my day. He is approachable, kind, generous, and an amazing lecturer. I enjoyed this class so much that I am switching over to the History department. Everyone should take a course with Prof. Brooke if they can.
He is the best professor ive ever encountered. sooo enagaing and nice and caring. he is passionate about what he does and he is the nicest professor.
Very understanding, lectures were pretty clear and understandable.
Professor Brooke is an okay professor. The class was very reading heavy for a first year course, but manageable. Your grade depends largely on your TA. The lectures werent that exciting in my opinion, mostly reading off slides. If you do your readings and work on your essays, you will be fine
Would not recommend this professor for graduate level. Perhaps good at undergraduate level in a big lecture class. Communication felt inconsistent. There seemed to be little interest in providing feedback and not much rigour in terms of basic guidance for grad students.
