Very open and approachable- Great attitude!
He's a professor that will inspire. Anything he teaches - take it!
Amazing professor...looks just like the Americas Most Wanted host...creepily so
An excellent prof, very helpful .....too bad there weren't more like him
I counted.. says OK on avg every 6 seconds..
Easy Going, Really Nice Guy
excellent prof, easy going and really knows his stuff. great guy. says ok lots!!
Andy Richter is WAY better
He is a good prof and very helpfull person.
Kindest, most helpful prof I ever had the pleasure of learning from. I would recommend taking any one of his classes.

No doubt he is one of the best teacher's at the University. You have to attend his lectures to do well in his course and he is very approachable. You wish every teacher was like him! If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to approach him.
The best!!!!!
Professor Brooks is the best professor I've had at the university. He knows what he's talking about and will do everything he can to make sure you do, too. He has a lot experience to back up his knowledge.
I actually had him in 2001 at UWO. He is a great prof. Good discussion. Brought cookies to class (Friday class). Reminded me of Don Johnson with that perfect hair (it looks wind swept, but it's actually quite stiff. Nice guy. Smart too.
He is one of my favorite prof. at the U
im confused
Not Bad! Good Prof. Clear and helpful! Take a class of his. You will enjoy it!
Very easy class, but still interesting enough. Very easy marker, but completely unreachable for help. Totally useless for any extra clarification or assistance.
I may be wrong, but I sometimes got the impression that he was only going through the motions. I thought he was good, but I think he could have been better. My performance as a student has always reflected my instructors performance: B+ for Stephen
He is the most amazing prof I have ever had, and likely ever will have. He knows his material inside out and is never afraid to interject the material with other things he thinks will help add to the learning of the material. I would take another class with him in a heart beat and I actually plan on it again this semester.
Excellent prof. Had him for 2 classes at Western in 2000/1. Very passionate about US politics. Clear, approachable, would definitely recommend.
If you do poorly in one of his classes you don't deserve to be in university.
Professor Brooks is extremely professional and well-versed in political science. I would recommend his courses to any political science student; especially the students who are interested in American politics. Someone will be hard pressed to find anyone who knows more about U.S. politics than he does.
i love this man. he is low tech, often disorganized and crazy intelligent. you could see yourself going for a beer with him and yet he maintains that constant aura of scholarly professional about him...great prof
He is the worse prof. I'm about to write his final next week and I was thinking what have learned in his class? NOTHING. All he does is talk about how many languages he speaks, that he has taught in Belium, US, and France. I hate him with passion. He is a looser. But he is also hot for an old guy.
I took two classes with him. He really knows his stuff. Very professional.
Amazing. He managed to teach an American politics course without it turning into a left wing circle jerk. Not only that but he was extremely knowledgable, had discussions which got people interested, and his format was extremely straight forward. A midterm and a final, no ridiculous assignments or any of that junk. All around great guy as well.
Lectures are very well organized. He speaks clearly, along with good explanations. Exams are straightforward and are easy. He writes the textbook, but skip his lectures at your own peril. He puts in quite a few multiple choice questions that can only be found in lecture. He also gives you outline questions to help you focus your chapter readings.
Attend the lectures and you'll be fine. His explanations are GREAT, but sometimes he's a little dry.
One of my fav profs! Very well organized and well spoken. Class outline is easy with 2 midterms and exam. A good piece of advise is to attend lectures since he gets a lot of m/c questions from then.
Good learning experience. The class suffered a bit because it had to be split into 2 sections (too many registered), so discussion was limited, but this was not Brooks' fault. I know if we had the full 3 hrs we would have had awesome discussions. His seminar provides a relaxed setting...great learning environment, especially for those who are shy.
He is one of the most helpfull and extremely knowledgable professors of the department.. The classes are 3 hrs long but its mandatory to attend.. if not u need to read the book ( in most classes he uses the books he wrote, so the lectures are almost word by word same as the book). The exams r really easy, as long as u pay attention in lectures... O
Stephen Brooks is an amazing professor. He is nothing short of a dream come true -- a breath of fresh air to Political Science majors. He's a great lecturer and his exams are very straight forward.
Had no idea what I was going to take in university... started with multicultural studies and figured it was a farce. Took a political science class as an elective with Prof Brooks in my 3rd and was hooked. Gotta appreciate a professor that really enjoys what he does
He is the worse Prof. ever. I have to admit, he is pretty smart. But, attitude wise, rude and thinks he is the best. Don't take him unless you really really have to.
I agree.. He is the worst Prof. ever. I have to admit, he is pretty smart. But, attitude wise, rude and thinks he is the best. Don't take him unless you really really have to.
thinks he is too good for the class. but he really gets into his lectures
His 4th year class was extremely easy. If you attend his class and participate you should not have a problem. He is pretty fair. But don't miss midterms or exams, he will hate u for it. Otherwise an ok prof.
A wonderful professor who is really passionate about the subject he teaches. Managed to remain neutral and teach the students both sides of every issue. He is very helpful and his textbook is extremely well written and easy to understand. Don't take his class if you are not willing to work, but if you are you will have a blast.
Amazing professor. Good lookin' dude. Super cool lectures and the best attitude towards everything, ever. Does not like anybody in the world.
Meh. Wasn't extremely impressed with his teaching style. He didn't really make any effort to get the class to discuss anything, just a bit of a debate with himself. I did well in the class but just make sure you attend lectures and read the book. All of the stuff on his exams are in the book! One big criticism of his class is it is not very engagin
Started off pretty good, but trailed off later. His lectures are just straight from the textbook that he wrote. RUN ON SENTENCES!!! haha. Pretty boring in class, says he won't post slides, but always does.
Started out excellent. He is a great speaker and has plenty of experience teaching. Does NOT post the slides for some reason. I have bombed 2/3 exams so far. I attended every class except for two and did a reasonable amount of studying for both exams.I think he marks/makes exams too hard for a first year class.I did not feel prepared for the exams.
He is a pretty good prof and the lectures are very interesting. The structure of the class is really dumb. 2 mid terms and a final, all worth 33.3%. He's a pretty hard marker but if you go to class you'll be entertained.
Every lecture consisted of the same thing, Brooks talking in circles and throwing out random information that was ultimately useless on his exams. His exam questions were ambiguous and were taken from who knows where. I attended every class & took good notes & studied A LOT and still was lost. Brooks was a Horrible PROFESSOR who was rude to student
Brooks is the sole reason I'm a PoliSci Major now. Great prof, he's really passionate about what he teaches. Exams are exactly what he says they will be. Can't wait until US Poli Gov in the fall!
Very enthusiastic, interesting class and pretty straightforward exams. Only prof to actually have "none of the above" be the right answer lol. Taking him again this semester, defs reccomended!
He is one of the best and most intelligent pol-scientist at UfW.His teaching style is so chillin just go to class and listen like watching TV.well orginized, lots of experience, reasonably fair.He is a true political scientist and understands politicians and what goes on.He teaches real politics,is open to comments, classes are fun and you learn.
I find that he just rambles on an on in class and I am finding myself lost and confused. The textbook doesn't help much either because it is once again its just him rambling on.
Never learned as much from any other professor. Maverick.
Very interesting; could almost go to class and just listen to his lectures without taking notes (not recommended). However, his multiple choice questions seemed to be pulled out of the slightest facts from the textbook he wrote.
Great speaker, had him before and his class is purely book based. Read chapters and he gives hints to essay questions
He is one of the worst public speakers I've ever met. If you happen to be an English major, he will seem incomprehensible to you. Massive digressions, digressions within digressions, and redundancies.
He is the typical looking 80's prof. Fun course
Very Condescending and pretentious. His books are not well written jumps all over. Was taken back that he would talk down about a student to other students. Very Unprofessional. Needs to strep back not be so judgmental and rude.
Professor Brooks is a very charismatic speaker. He does NOT post slides, so it's important to attend every class. I did well in this class, and I'm looking forward to US Gov in the Fall with Brooks. 2 midterms, and 1 final all worth 33%. Fantastic first year class to take, although it is easy to zone-out in class due to Brooks rambling on.
Pretty chill guy, probably the best professor I have had at the U. my one compliant-He is the kinda prof that likes to hear himself speak, sometimes he goes on and on about the same topics. If you're honestly interested about knowing how are governments works, take this course.
I have had him a few times and have done very well but I find him to be incredibly arbitrary with grading. It became increasingly clear that he did not read papers or exams and utilized a grading system that had an average he liked. Don't like him or his discussions with himself. Boring. Pretentious. Even though I received an A I didn't like him.
If he just taught us any key terms and relevant historic events in class I would go. You get your main education from the class and the book is the supplement. He thinks going to class is the supplement! He does ramble, ALOT. He really should understand that some of us just don't want that much detail about things that are not going to be on exam!
Brooks made learning about Canadian Politics actually interesting. If you do badly it is because you made no effort to show up to class or complete readings. When mid-terms roll around the class size grew dramatically. Do not expect to do well in this course without attending lectures regularly and doing the readings.
Brooks is definitely the best prof I've had. I had him for Intro to Canadian Politics (45-100) & a Selected Topics course. He is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable in his field. I would strongly advise taking as many classes as you can with this man, you learn a lot of unbiased info. I frequently skip out on lectures but I was actually upset if I missed his.
The best poli sci professor at the University of Windsor. This guy really knows what he's talking about. His lectures are always interesting and he gives you a lot of information not in the textbook. It is highly recommended that you attend lecture. Never skip one.
Brooks is a great prof with lots of interesting stories! Classes are not difficult however, those who are new to American politics may find it a bit more challanging. He does ramble on at times and can easily get off topic but he otherwise is a pretty awesome prof! Class structure: 3 essays (worth 1/3rd of final mark), sometimes M/C also as well.
He is not a very good teacher. Believe me when I say it is extremely easy to zone out.
Great prof! Interesting. Show up to class, review your notes and you will do great in his class. I got 100% on the mid-term. He can get a little preachy when students act disrespectfully or don't show up to class.
Interesting character. Sit in the front row, or else you'll fall asleep. Take notes whatever his major topic of the day is prob is your midterm essay. MC was tricky, overall a decent course if you put the time into it.
Good Speaker. Likes to talk on and on a lot but you will learn from him. The tests aren't hard as long as you read and do the work
An exceptional professor! Dr. Brooks' enthusiasm and love for all things political are apparent in his lectures. The student's success is dependant on their attendance and their undivided attention. He uses many examples in his lectures; these are replicated on his midterms. In summary; Come to class, pay attention, take detailed notes, get an A.
the best prof here at uwindsor!
Don't take his class. Bad speaker, rambles , not very helpful when I approached him. Lectures are painful to sit through. He wrote the textbook for the class!! Buy it used like I did if you can so he doesn't make any money off book sales. Bad professor, one of worst I've ever had at University.
Not a very good teacher, he is constantly rambling and since he wrote the textbook for this class it does the same... Even though the prof is not the best it isn't hard to do well. General knowledge of Canadian politics and what is going on in Canada will serve you well, you just have to decode what he is trying to say...
Horribly full of himself and a terrible professor all around. Avoid if possible, if your interested in political science you'll learn more from wikipeida and the news
This was a very interesting course on American FP. I wish it divided into 2 courses so that we could focus in on more detail. If your expecting the the whole Anti-American spiel, you wont get it here. Brooks is fair in his explanation of events, he is not afraid to criticize the US,he tries to give a balanced view. Enjoyable 2 listen and well liked
Really good prof, has real interest in the subject and also wrote the textbook so you need to read it. Classes do a good job of summarizing the material. 2nd class i have taken with him, both electives.
Clear speaker, drift a lot from the main topics. He always have to remind us of his time leaving and teaching in Paris, Belgium, US. His grading is very fair, and is approachable. Attend his class, take notes, try to stay awake, and you'll do fine.
Professor Brooks' classes are extremely engaging; he is very knowledgeable, an excellent speaker and his sarcasm makes dealing with politics fun and interesting. I just loved his course and being from Europe I didn't know much about Canadian affairs - I feel definitely more prepared now.
Great professor! I came into the class expecting it to be very dry and boring but he made it very interesting. Love the way he lectures! Definitely hope to have him again
He's just disorganised and he isn't easy just there. Expect a d.he doesn't change the mark if you meet him.
Awesome.
Professor Brooks is very knowledgeable, clear, and makes Canadian politics interesting. He is one of the better professors at UM-D and its too bad he doesn't teach more classes here. If you attend class and keep up with lecture and the book you will do fine in the class. Definitely recommended.
My favourite professor. Keep up on your readings. Wish I could take his course again!
very good teacher
I am an engineering major, but this class isn't that bad. It tends to expand your mind about general issues, as the first midterm gave me a more clear eye about the world. Come to every lecture and read the chapters he specifies. Understanding politics and history and a good grade is guanteed in this class.
I highly recommend Stephen Brooks, great professor is there for his students and is very approachable for additional help. Be sure to read the chapters he assigns, cause they will be on the exams he provides throughout the semester. Very knowledgeable, and you can tell he enjoys what he teaches. Take every class you can that he teaches, GREAT PROF
Brooks lectures were awesome! It's clear that his lectures are super thought-out and organized. He has a story behind every concept and term, which helps you to remember. (Beneficial during an exam) With OCD, his repetition to say "ok" after every sentence is aggravating. His exams are challenging. If you don't like attending class, don't take it.
Brooks is a very good prof. Sometimes he can go off on a tangent and forget his point, but overall he is a very intelligent man and wants the best for his students. He is very approachable. Midterms and exams are easy as long as you do your readings or show up to class; he posts all powerpoints online, which are basically the textbook word for word
Dr. Brooks is a great professor. His lectures are structured exceptionally well and also follow the textbook. It is important to attend his classes, as he does elaborate on many issues, politicians, etc. The exams are fairly good-be sure to stay caught up on your readings and you will do well. Overall, he is one of a kind and very kind!
Brooks is engaging and explains topics well. You can tell he's passionate about his work. The entirety of your grade is made up of three tests though, so its easy to fall behind. You need to be disciplined with keeping up with the readings and paying attention for a good grade!
Favourite poli sci prof at the U. Enjoyable lectures, midterms are reasonable and grades reasonably. If you don't want to read the books just come to class. The only downfall is that he is not reachable outside of class, even via email, will not discuss midterms with you and does not have office hours.
About the best prof I've studied under at Windsor. Extensively knowledge, approachable and fair. His lower level courses are meant to be enlightening and informative, not punishing. You could survive without attending lectures, but you'd be missing out. If you genuinely care to learn poli sci, there's no better man.
Dr. Brooks is a very kind, down to earth guy. Very approachable and open to questions during class. But I found him boring, and it was easy to lose focus during his lectures. He rarely, if ever engages with the class by asking questions to keep students interested and spends a lot of time reading long paragraphs off his powerpoints, to my dismay.
Brooks offers a very clear and concise lecture that offers you straightforward and pertinent information. Furthermore, he utilizes a variety of transcripts and articles in order to present literal excerpts as verbatim. He is careful to express his rather fair opinions and indicates when doing so. His marking schemes are also greatly reasonable
absolutely love his classes. had to take 6 polisci courses as a minor and unfortunately only have him for 2 of the 6. Would have loved to have him for all 6. great teacher. very intelligent.
Really good prof, shows a thorough understanding of the topic and can teach it effectively. Lectures were helpful and informative but VERY dry. Only other issue would be that a few of his multiple choice questions felt too specific, like you had to know every detail of the course, but he gave bonus marks so it's not a big deal. Would take again.
Very dry lectures. Gets through like 3 slides a class, so deep dives are all it is. Very informative, but very boring. Tests are mostly fair, but some MC questions come out of nowhere, and I had to rely on what I knew from other courses to answer them. Writes a fantastic textbook though. First class that I consistently skipped in university.
Ive taken many courses with Dr. Brooks and I feel that hes by far the best poli sci prof at Windsor. You are graded very fairly and on few things. His lectures are fantastic, and anyone with an interest in politics will look forward to them. An A is very achievable if you study your notes and do readings.
Wow, Brooks has his classes down to a science. Lectures are impassioned and clear, you can tell he genuinely cares about teaching politics in a understandable way. No assignments other than readings and three exams, he gives great hints and has amazing online resources, even his own podcasts. Windsor is lucky to have him. Will take his other class.
If you attend class and listen to him, he gives you every opportunity to succeed. Exams are on what he talks about in class, not the readings. Great lecturer and an overall great prof.
Really enjoyed my time with Dr. Brooks. Had two courses with him, and wished I had more time with him! Great textbooks, and Brooks provides updates to the text in his slides. 3 exams, following the same pattern, and multiple choice questions tend to be tough and very specific. Great prof, very impassioned. And very unbiased to political ideology.
Good teacher. Had an obsession with Quebec though.
This prof got through like 3 slides per lecture. If you have no interest in politics, you will get bored during his lectures. If you do not show up and stay on top of your readings, you can finish with a good mark. He uses the textbook he wrote and does refer to it when it comes to the 2 midterms and the final exam. Each is worth 1/3 of your mark.
His lectures are dry, and I like the subject. He goes on long tangents that can either be super helpful (but hard to see where they're going), or utterly anecdotal. Seems to speak around issues or difficult topics, rather than cutting to the core, which wasn't helpful for me. Not my favourite, but he knows his subject. He loves "So on and so forth"
Dr. Brooks is an all-around great professor. Lectures are informative and entertaining, material is not dry whatsoever, lots of study resources are available on the companion website like practice quizzes, he's easily accessible via email, podcasts are always interesting and cover relevant news stories and events, and tests are pretty easy. 5/5
Beginning of semester was easy, but then after the 2nd midterm his lectures started becoming too much. He literally reads off of a script and its hard to know what is important and what isn't. It's just a waterfall pouring down on you and I'm feeling exhausted. His lectures where he isn't reading off of a script were so great though. Good guy tho!
I really enjoyed this class although lectures can become very long and dry. This is a great beginner class to learn about Canadian politics. Lots of study resources are available and weekly podcasts are given which cover current events. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about politics!
I used to like him, but ever since COVID, he is awful. He was so lazy, the only things that were evaluated were 2 midterms and 1 final, all extremely difficult, with material that was not taught. All his lectures were pre-recorded and boring with no visuals. I don't know why he's like this, but he is so rude with no empathy. Don't take him online
He demonstrated passion and enthusiasm in his online pre-recorded lectures, I would just wish he was more accessible during these times instead of being 100% pre recorded lectures. Overall, not a bad prof.
I found that Dr Brooks seems to be a great guy but his lectures are tough to follow. 80% of it is rambling and i begin tuning out halfway through since its unclear what parts of it we will be tested on. Adequate time is not given on exams even though many students have messaged asking for a little bit more.
Rude and conceited. Every class is a lazy and oversimplified survey of ideas from 30 years ago. Also gives As to anyone without serious brain damage. If that is worth it is up to you.
Had him for an Intro to Poli Sci course; really inspired me to continue studying Poli Sci (changed my major!) Great lectures, easy to follow but can be fast-paced. No reason to not do well if you attend regularly and skim the readings. He assigns podcasts, but these are usually short (about 10 mins) and only tests on a few (you'll know which).
Dr. Brooks' intro to politics was one of my favourite courses this semester. He is a great professor & a super nice guy. Attendance & participation arent really necessary & you are only graded on 3 exams which are multiple-choice and an essay question. His lectures are super easy to follow & make notes for. Would 1000% take another class with him
As much as Professor Brooks goes off-topic throughout his lectures, he is an amazing person and I will continue to take any of his courses that are available to me in the future. He does have a textbook, however, it's barely used. The midterm and exam formats are all the same: 25 mc and 1 essay question. PowerPoints are posted before class.
Professor Brooks is a very respectable man. He cares for his students and is very understanding. 10/10 would take again.
If I can give you one piece of advice it is BUY THE BOOK!! He wrote it and so it helps a lot with understanding. He is very knowledgeable and respectable. Exams are all the same and not cumulative. Pay attention to the lectures and you'll do amazing- don't and you can still pass.
Clear exam format. Very boring class. Stephen is very passionate and well versed on the material. If you have any prior knowledge of politics its a fairly simple class
he posts the slide shows, yet lectures do help
He is a very fair marker; you will be fine if you show up and pay attention.
Professor Brooks' lectures can be dense, but engaging with the textbook he authored and using resources like Unstuck study for study prep make this a manageable course. Fair exams and a knowledgeable professor make it a solid choice.
Great Prof. I've had him for POLS 1000, 2320, and 3610! Always ready to help.
If you're not a Poli-Sci major but love politics and want to be taught by someone who knows his stuff, Dr. Brooks is for you. He is intelligent in his craft, responds fast to emails, and has a vast array of life experiences. Intro to CAN Gov. + Politics has been my favourite elective in university.
