Nice guy all-around
great teacher who knows his stuff
No Comments
Nice guy with hilarious stories that make the class interesting.
For an older professor he is so hot that he made me pay attention. He has great stories that makes the class fun....
Dr. Buck makes history come alive like no one else, and has a great sense of humor with extremely good content knowledge.
i have never been so interested in history before i had dr.buck. he is the best history teacher i have ever had.
Excellent teacher, waited another semester just so I could get him for HIS 106! He is helpful and knows what he is doing. If you can get any teacher, GET HIM!!!
He is super conservative but what a great professor!
Dr. Buck is a winner! Once you walk in his room you will want to stay forever.
a good teacher..very passionate about what he teaches and knows a crap load about it
Great teacher. I have never had a teacher that was so deeply involved in his work. His lectures are fantastic. HIGHLY RECOMENDED Test are in essay form, you had better know your stuff.
dr. buck is a maniac but he loves history and loves to teach. don't slack off in his class or he'll call you out on it. if you like history, you'll like him. he's a tough grader though.
His class was alot of fun. If you have any questions about history this is the guy to ask he is very passionate about history. He is very fair in th grading process great oppertunity to excell in this class
Very enthusiastic. His test are not hard if you study (he gives a study guide). There is a lot of reading in this class. Overall he is a very good teacher. If you put in a good effort you should get a B. By the way, he hates it when people are late to class.
He was an awesome professor. He always shared good stories to make us really understand his teaching
Mr. Buck has a ton of energy. His class is amazing, I've taken him 3 times and learning more than I ever thought I would on history. His notes are good, and he explains everything very well. Once you take him you'll want to take all of his other classes.
awesome

A VERY TALENTED AND SMART PROFESSOR.
awesome guy...really nice and tons of energy. tests are essay form and really freaking hard to prepare for considering that dr. buck knows everything about history that ever happened and its really tough to discern what he considers to be important because he has the same enthusiasm about everything. but still really great guy
very enthusiastic, occasional lame jokes, test are pretty hard, study, do the reading, and show up for class and you'll do fine.....i should follow my own suggestions!
Great Instructor. Keeps Class Interesting.
I first took Dr.Buck my first semester at JJC. I have literally taken every single class he teaches. He is a great instructor who keeps things interesting. Papers and tests, so the usually for grades. I strongly recommend taking him!
He is the best history teacher I have ever had- His energy is amazing and he really gets into the material. I reccommend this class to anyone :)
My fav. prof. at JJC, hands down. I liked U.S. history, but he made it all the more interesting. Very good at explaining things and knows practically everything. Good sense of humor and approachable. Test involve short answer and essays. Provides study guides, prepare for it, and you'll do ok. Two papers are assigned, gives plenty of time though.
Very engaging teacher, makes history understandable, informative, and (somehow) entertaining. Tests are a bit difficult because he is a bit of a demanding grader, but overall a wonderful teacher.
EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A BUCK IN THEIR LIFE. I REALLY ENJOYED HIS CLASS AND WAS AMAZED BY THE ENERGY HE BRINGS TO HISTORY. I LOVE THIS MAN HE SHOULD BE TEACHING UNIVERSITY STUDENTS.
I liked him a lot. He is a wonderful teacher and really enjoys what he does. His tests are pretty hard but as long as you study the study guide, they are not that bad. I really enjoyed his enthusiam in history. I was not looking forward to taking history because i hate it, but he made it a lot of fun to learn. I learned a lot from him.
great teacher
He is awsome! It is great that their are teacher out there that still enjoy what they do.
Do not take this class if you want an easy A! Very good teacher, knows his stuff, but his tests are extremly hard. One essay question is worth 70% of the test! So if you get that wrong you're pretty much screwed.
Excellent professor. Really knows his information. Makes you work hard for your grade. You will learn alot.
Dr. Buck is an extremely nice and knowledgeable Professor! I was not looking forward to taking a history class, and now I will be taking two more from him. Has a great sense of humor, in a corny/cute way. You will learn a lot in his class.
There is not enough praise in the world to explain how good of a teacher he is.
Great professor! High energy and always in a great mood. Really loves what he teaches and it shows. Minimal homework, but reading required for quizzes every week. Exams are written, no multiple choice. Makes class interesting and gives thorough notes. If you pay attention in class you'll do fine.
Excellent professor who I would recommend to anyone interested in taking a history course. I cannot emphasize enough how good this guy is. The class is difficult if you are in a M/W/F section because his tests take quite a bit of thought and explanation to do well on. I find myself going over time and still not getting enough information down. This
Amazing teacher! You can tell that he loves the subject he teaches and wants everyone else to love it just as much. He is helpful, understanding, and grades fairly. As long as you study, you will get a good grade.
Dr. Buck is one of the best teachers I have had. His tests are a little challenging, but his class is very enjoyable. I never miss a day, and always look forward to going to his class. TAKE THIS TEACHER!
Professor Buck is a great teacher and knows a lot about the subject. will answer all questions that you have. His tests are challenging but not impossible, you get help on the tests with a note card. I really enjoyed his class i would take this class over if i could
Mr. Buck is THE history teacher to have if you want to really understand and remember anything about history. He loves teaching it and seeing you learn...sign up fast, his classes go fast
The most important thing you need to know about Dr. Buck is that he has a deep passion for history. He explains everything as clearly as he can, he'll stop in the middle of a sentence to answer a question and he's definitely got a good sense of humor! This professor is so good that I changed my major because of him!
I have absolutely no interest in history which made this class 10x harder than it should have been. The tests are pretty much all essay and I found them hard. Dr. Buck has a passion for teaching history and is very helpful in answering questions. I would recommend him as a teacher, but I would not recommend this class.
Probably the hardest class I have ever taken. The lectures do not really relate to his tests, which are extremely hard to begin with. He says if you listen to the lectures you will be fine, but really you need to study study study. Definately wouldnt reccommend taking this class as a gen ed...to much work!
Best teacher I've had at JJC. Incredibly clear, knows SO much, and LOVES history. His enthusiasm keeps you awake, even if you hate history. Grades his tests hard, but you get to use a big notecard every test. Must attend, but its one you'll look forward to. Dr. Buck is an awesome teacher!
Dr. Buck is awesome! He is what all professors should aspire to be. His enthusiasm is contagious. If you have half of his enthusiasm and put forth half of the effort that he does, you should do well. There is a reason that his classes fill so fast. If you are looking for an easy A, take a different class.
This is my second course with Dr. Buck and I intend to take as many classes with him as possible. His lectures are full of energy and interesting material. His tests are pretty difficult, but if you pay attention in class, you'll be fine. He's a great teacher and enjoys seeing his students learn. He's even inspired me to change my major!
He is a great teacher. He really knows and loves what he is teaching. I didn't like history before this class and now I love it.
Dr. Buck was one of the most enthusiastic and fun teachers I had ever had. Some of the homework and test are difficult and require a lot of detail, but I still highly recommend this class
Dr.Buck is an amazing teacher! He LOVES history so much he makes it a lot easier to learn.I HIGHLY recommend him
It is obvious that Dr. Buck loves what he is doing. He is enthusiastic and hard working. This is not an easy class, and regular attendance is mandatory for a good grade. If you are a hard worker and looking for a professor that is putting as much into your education as you are, he's the one!!!
Dr. Buck was awesome! I was not expecting to enjoy this class at all, just filling a requirement, but it was GREAT! It is not an "easy" class: you have to go to class, participate, take notes and study. But if you do the work, an A is not that tough to get. I am looking forward to taking 106 with him soon!
He is an awesome teacher!!!
By far the best teacher at JJC as well as History teacher I have had. His lectures are in great detail with so much enthusiasm that its almost IMPOSSIBLE not to take great notes as well as not understanding the material. If you go to class you are almost guaranteed a passing grade because it's easy to follow, enjoy and note take. He knows his stuff
He is a great teacher! He knows everything and he makes things very clear! He is probably the best history professor at JJC easily!
The BEST HISTORY teacher I have ever had. He is so INFORMATIVE! I have changed my specialty for Elementary Education to History because of Dr. Buck. I would take him for every class if I could. He is kind, intelligent, helpful. If you do not get an A in his class you just did not work hard enough. He makes you want to work hard!
I love his class! i have had him for a couple of classes and he is a great teacher! he is fun and interesting!
Extreamly intearesting!! Tests are not multiple choice. They are essay questions and only two on each exam. Allows a note card the size of half a full page paper so just write small. Other than that just sit back and listen to his awsome lectures! I learned alot and I had I dieing hatred for history.
I have had Dr. Buck for 5 semesters now and when I first started taking him I wasn't all that interested in history, he gave me a passion for it. His classes are amazing! Tests are a bit challenging, though through good note-taking and paying attention to his Lectures(which are very intense and awesome) you will do fine! HE IS EXCEPTIONALLY HELPFUL
He is just such an awesome teacher. He made me LOVE history and I feel like he's the first history teacher I've had where I actually learned something. All in all, He was just really interesting and his passion for history was infectious.
Great Energetic teacher! Very knowledgeable! Great speaker as well!
Dr. Buck is the best history teach I ever had! he is always so excited about what he is teaching, I learned so much in his classes, and I rememberd it. His tests are hard but not impossible. I became a history major after takeing a few of his classes.
I LOVED Dr Buck. He definitely Loves history and knows what he is talking about. Textbook reading is mandatory because his quizes are directly from the book and his exams are diffifult but he lets you have a notecard. Final is not comprehensive so its just like the other tests! I enjoyed him, his classes were ALWAYS interesting!
He is a really good teacher and really loves history. If you hate writing though, I wouldn't recommend taking his class. He gives journal assignments and all the tests are essay tests. He's really energetic and excited about history, so the class wasn't bad to go to. He's also really helpful with anything. Overall, he's a good teacher!
Awesome teacher!! If you take history, take Buck! The work is not hard and the test is self explanatory if you just show up to class! Made me love history!
Dr. Buck has great enthusiasm for history and teaching. His classes are entertaining, the journals and quizzes aren't terribly hard. Here's the thing even with the study guide and note-card his exams are nearly set up so that you fail. He gives 12 topics and cuts it down the day of the test. You hope that you studied the right things and pass
Overall Dr. Buck is a excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. If you really want to learn about history take his class. Take good notes. He assigns weekly journals that due Fridays but there not hard. The Exams are essay questions and a bit challenging, but if you pay attention in class you'll be fine.
Dr. Buck is amazing! He is by far one of the greatest teachers I have ever had! I highly recommend his class! Its no easy A, you definetly have to put the work in! Love him so much Im taking him again in the fall!!!!
Dr. Buck is easily the best instructor at JJC. I took 3 history courses before taking Hist 250 w/Dr Buck and wished I could go back and retake the others him! In fact, after I transferred I came back just to take Hist 270 w/him. It's not a blow off class though. You have to take notes and study but he is extremely fair, helpful, and interesting.
He know what he is teaching and has it put to memory.
There is not a better teacher at the Jukes than Dr. Buck. No matter how much you love/hate history, he can make you pay attention. Very enthusiastic. Class can be hard if you do not take notes, but the note cards on tests are a huge help. Will go out of his way to help you succeed. Also an all around nice guy. Says hello whenever he sees you
Dr.Buck is an awesome teacher!!! I wasn't very interested in history until this class! Not only does he make the class fun, but he makes it easily understandable. He's obviously very passionate about history and passes that onto his students
Buck is an amazing teacher. He is always there to help, and he is so enthusiastic about history. He gives all the fun little details and if you have any questions, he will answer it thoroughly. Best history teacher ever.
Dr. Buck is a wonderful teacher! He is very intelligent and enjoys sharing his knowledge. He is very kind and always helpful! He is one of my most favorite teachers I've ever had! I've taken History 270 with him and he made me appreciate the subject even more. I definitely reccomend taking him :)
I really enjoyed this class. The teacher is extremely knowledgeable, animated, and helpful. The downfall? His 3 exams are all essay. He is a slightly easy grader, but there is a bit more writing than I like.
Hands down the best History teacher I have ever had! He’s not an easy grader but it’s not hard to pass his class either. I’m taking him again in the spring. TAKE NOTES!
Dr. Buck is so amazing!! This spring will be my third time taking one of his history classes! He is a great teacher and will help you with anything you need! All the tests are essays but you're allowed to use a note card. Quizzes are online and really easy if you do the readings. Also, journals are due weekly over specified readings!
he is a fantastic teacher. he is the best teacher i have ever had in history. he makes things pretty easy in class, has no favorites, and has a very good sense of humor. if you have never taken him in JJC then you are missing a lot.
Great professor, really nice and helpful, this became my favorite class in no time. Mainly learn from easy note powerpoints, and everything is explained in detail. He teaches the interesting stuff, not boring! Notecards for tests, and he puts up everything that could be on the test online. So easy!
As long as you take detailed notes youre fine. Dr Buck is the best history teacher out there. Take him.
He is a great teacher! He knows what he is talking about and his class is interesting. As long as you pay attention, take his notes down, you will be fine!!!!! I loved his class!
Great teacher! He is really passionate about history and brings that with each lecture. As long as you attend class and complete the journals along with reading you will be fine! He offers you opportunity to be really successful on tests and quizzes. He's an overall great teacher! I would recommend him again and again!
He really enjoys teaching and the material and his lectures can be interesting. Attendance is necessary to get a good grade. Overall i'd recommend taking him.
Buck is seriously my favorite teacher. I had zero interest in taking this class because i do not enjoy history, but he made it so much better and i can actually say i got something out of this class! Take him!
Dr. Buck is one of the most gifted professors I have ever had. He knows his material and keeps the course interesting. I would recommend him to anyone taking a History course. Do your work, study the material, and participate in his class. Two thumbs up for Dr. Buck!
Mr. Buck was a good teacher. He's very into what he does and I respect that. All of the classes are a lecture of him talking about the subject, but when he talks about it it's almost as if he's telling a story. He is a very nice reasonable teacher.
Dr. Buck is the best history teacher you could ask for. He's so passionate about what he teaches and gets you excited, too. His lectures are funny, interesting, and it's as if he's telling a story. My only complaint is that the tests are all essay and short answer, BUT he lets you bring in a notecard with hand-written notes on both sides!
I took this class in the Fall of 2013. Buck really loves history and is really passionate about his lectures. I was never a fan of history so it was boring for me. Quizzes are online every week so text book is a must. Test were all essay n short answer but lets you use a note card. I got an A. Take him!!
He's a great teacher who knows what he is talking about. He makes class not only enjoyable but you learn a lot and you're always interested in his stories. I highly recommend him
This class was hard for me. The essays always threw me off because I don't do well with essays. It was hard to keep the journals each week. He did have some interesting stories though.
Buck was a very good teacher & he has a lot of passion for the subject. You have to write a journal just about every week, there's a couple quizzes, & 3 tests. The main thing i hated was that for the test, he gives you 10-12 essays to write and only 3-4 of them will be on the test and you only write one. So you basically have to learn 10 essays..
Amazing!Amazing!Amazing! Best teacher I've ever had by far. He loves what he does and knows what his talking about. Class was never a boring. Journals are easy, the papers are moderate. The tests are all essay based questiones and if you pay close enough you'll be able to tell what is and isn't going to be on the test. Highly Recommand taking Buck!
Great teacher! He has a real passion for the subject and knows what he is talking about. He is always upbeat and happy which makes class enjoyable. For tests he gives you a study guide with all the possible essay questions and allows you to use an index card. Very easy grader for journals and papers. I highly recommend taking his class!
He is a great teacher & loves history very much. If you do not enjoy history then this class will be pretty boring. His notes are bullet points that can only be taken in class, & the book helped a lot on the tests. Basically, he was a great teacher and its an easy "B" you just have to do the work and pay attention.
Never been a huge history buff, so I was very unenthused to take this class. However, Dr. Buck made the lectures as interesting and as fun as possible with the dry content of the class. Journals are easy, involve a bit of reading. 3 tests that are essaysshort-answers but you can use a note card. I would take his class again.
Seriously the easiest tests I have ever taken before. Lectures are not posted online and really interesting.
If you want to learn history the right way, this is the guy to take. Mr. Buck is unbelievably knowledgeable in his field. It's almost like the guy was there to witness the historical events he teaches. The tests are moderately difficult, but if you go to class and ask questions about the material you will be fine. Best history teacher I've had.
Buck knows and loves his material. Class is never a bore his so enthusiastic about the subject it makes you want to learn more. Tests are moderate as long as you pay attention. Ive take almost every class he teaches. The man legit will make you want to learn about history. It's rare to find a professor who truly loves what they do.
Never have i ever had a worse teacher. This man just comes in and talks and talks and talks. horrible
Very passionate about what he does, Buck makes class interesting and makes the information easy to understand. I would recommend taking any history class with him, he will make learning about the past much more interesting than any history teacher out there. Amazing teacher.
He is such a nice well educated man; however it is hard to pass the class. Every test covers a LOT of material and the notecard you make can barely help. I'm an AB student and my best was never good enough.
Buck is amazing. Class is seriously interesting and makes you like history! quizzes are online, super easy and can be googled for answers. Note: be prepared to write more in this class than an english class! 2 major papers, 3 exams - note much be taken down as he speaks since powerpoint just give the main points. STUDY! this class isn't an easy A
Excellent teacher. Lectures are funny and interesting. You can tell that Buck is serious and passionate about what he does and studies. Tests are medium-difficult and essay based, but he isn't a tough grader. Journals and quizzes are extremely easy. If you don't like history, Buck will make you like history.
Great lectures. Impossible to not pay attention to them. It was a privilege to have been able to learn about history from Dr. Buck. Pretty sure he knows the history of the world. He is upbeat yet calm, approachable, gives reminders, etc. Overall a really great teacher.
Dr. Buck is a fantastic lecture. His assignments are easy to keep up with and he is always willing to give feedback. Speaking up and adding to class discussions is the way to earn extra credit.
Going to class is critical, tests are hard and a large percentage of your grade. Must do the reading to pass the homework and quizzes. Difficult but doable. Most effort I've ever had to put into passing a class.
Have to take good notes in order to be successful. He doesn't put the power points on canvas. He talks pretty fast so you might want to record him. Good Notes Great grade. Study guide is basically the test it's just a random selection of which question or term is on the test. Don't let the movie review or long journal creep up on you! good luck.
As long as you take good notes and use those notes to prepare for the tests
Great teacher with good criteria setup. His tests are not too hard but they're essay tests. So if you're good at that then take him
This prof. is very organized but you better be ready to take lots and lot of notes, and do it pretty fast. He is a fast talker, and goes through slides pretty quickly too. His tests are essay tests, but aren't bad if you prepare. Show up, do the weekly journals and quizzes every other week (can find most on quizlet) and you'll do fine.
Nice guy, grading can be tough
This teacher is probably one of the best I've had at JJC. He's organized and very enthusiastic about teaching history. Nothing is ever a surprise in his class. If you do poorly, it is 100% your fault. He makes it very easy for you to earn points, and actually LEARN something.
Dr. Buck is awesome! He's a phenomenal lecturer and makes the class really entertaining. Very easy to pass as long as you do all of the journals and quizzes. Tests are in essay form.
He is an AMAZING teacher. If you need an easy A this is definitely the class, while also learning tons of cool information. He is extremely nice and the tests are all essay questions. For the tests he gives you a study guide of exactly what you need to know, and allowed to use a notecard.
Dr. Buck is awesome. He's clearly passionate about history and he knows his stuff. His lectures are like listening to someone tell the story of historical events. I learned so much in his classes. He responds well to questions; never making people feel dumb. All tests are hand-written (1 essay question and 5 short answer), so be a good writer!
he grades way too hard for tests but overall a decent lecturer.
Dr. Buck is a good prof, he is knowledgeable and passionate about history. He speaks fast and goes through slides quickly, so good note-taking is a must. Every assignment and test in this class is writing, except for the occasional quiz. The tests rely heavily on class lectures, so don't miss out on any. Not really an easy A, just put the time in.
The class is lecture heavy, but they're interesting and he's enthusiastic about history. There are 3 exams and all are in essay format, but you get to use a notecard. Make sure you take detailed notes. Almost every week there's a journal based on first hand accounts in the sources textbook. Every other weeks there's a quiz. My favorite prof by far
Very nice guy, passionate about history. Not too much homework, gives a quiz and a journal at least once a week but they relate to the lectures so theyre interesting. Gives 3 exams, the last exam is the final which isnt comprehensive. He really wants you to be successful, gives a study guide for the exams so theres no reason not to get an A.
Hes a great lecturer and very dynamic. All the test material was mentioned in lectures. However be a quick writer or type fast, because he moves quickly and might be hard to keep up with.
very passionate about history and it shows. the way he explains stories of the past is so intriguing hes actually what got me interested in history. hes also very funny and amusing makes the time go by fast. hes a fair grader and lets you use a small notecard for tests
By far one of the best teachers out there, completely amazing at teaching and his love for history is amazing. I'd definitely take him if he fits your schedule, takes notes and always use your notecards for the exams in class it will help a lot and you get a good size, and the quizzes and journals are super easy, also tells great stories!
Dr. Buck is one of the best teachers I've taken at JJC. History could be boring sometimes, not with Dr. Buck it's not. He makes history come alive through his lectures. The tests are extremely easy as long as you pay attention. Overall I would take Dr. Buck again for a course If Y'all need to take history take it with Dr. Buck it's awesome.
Great professor! Ive understood history until taking his class. Would definitely take his class again!
Dr. Buck is great lecturer, and overall teacher however I do not like how he brings in some modern day politics (Trump Administration/BLM/Etc...). I'd rather my teachers not share their political views during class time. Other than that Dr. Buck is a great teacher, very enthusiastic about his career and brings the best out of everyone.
Great history teacher! I really enjoyed Dr. Bucks lectures, hes so enthusiastic about what hes teaching. The class wasnt so bad, you will read a lot but its a history course so thats unavoidable. The exams arent so bad either, do take really good, detailed noteseven when hes talking, not just off his PowerPoints, and show up to class.
He takes his job very seriously, loves what he does, and makes history fun. However, the only reason I gave him a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 is that this is somewhat of a difficult class. For example, his class is reading and writing intensive and he states that on his syllabus. I would not recommend taking his class if you are a 1st year student @ JJC.
I literally had to sign up just to give specifically Dr. Buck a 5. He is BEYOND amazingso amazing, in fact that I'm afraid any other professor that I had or will ever have won't be able to top him. His immense enthusiasm about history is contagious. Study guides ultimately make you work for an A. Being a history major, I aspire to be this great.
Out of all the professors Ive had at this school, Dr. Buck has been my favorite by far. I personally hate history but taking his class has gotten me more interested in it. Hes very high-energy & cares a lot about his students. Great professor, would definitely recommend to take 105/106 with him!
Loved Dr. Buck, was one of the most intriguing teachers ive ever had. Made the class fun and has a great personality himself. i struggled a tiny bit due to family matters, but his class was awesome and i'd certainly recommend him to anyone!
Professor Buck was really good! He kept the class engaging and kept the subject interesting. He always liked to hear from students and always took and answered questions really well. The homework load is pretty easy and the quizzes are all short and online. For the tests he lets you use notecards and gives you everything you need to do well.
Professor Buck is an exemplary individual. His lectures are enjoyable to attend, and his tests are quite thought-provoking, albeit fair. If you miss a day or two it's pretty easy to read through the text to catch-up, but anymore and it's harder to follow along. Homework isn't bad, weekly journaling. Again, his lectures rock! Take his course.
Dr. Buck is an amazing guy & he knows his stuff. But I just was not into it. I feel like his powerpoints could be more descriptive/have more visuals because he talks about everything most of the time when most students are visual learners. He doesnt remind you to take online quizzes so just mark it on your calendar. Easy to pass- just do the work!
He is an okay teacher. He really offended me with his comments about the Catholic Church. I didn't feel comfortable in class anymore. What he teaches isn't on the quizzes. It is really disorganized from your notes trying to study for your tests. I would recommend taking your own notes. You can miss class and be okay. You do the same thing every da.
I wouldnt take him again. He is very unorganized and his tests dont go along with lecture. He is strict about paying attention and makes sly comments if youre not. You do the same thing everyday and it is a waste of time. He is also really unfair when it comes to the tests. Never tells you why you get something wrong. Do not take him!!
Professor Buck is a great teacher and is so passionate about history so it makes his lectures interesting! Being in class/taking detailed notes is really important. His tests are essay format and he is a tough grader so you really got to work for it. If you're lazy and want an easy A he is not a professor for you.
Read the textbook to pass the online take-home quizzes. He gives you 12 or 24 minutes to work on them. You only have to type in at least 1/2 page of your thoughts and reactions per document in weekly journals. It was fun to speak up in class. Thank-you for helping me succeed in history, Dr. Buck! I now like history more than I used to.
This professor really does care. Every normal class day usually consists of slides and notes to take but he truly does make it extremely interesting and enjoyable. I have never been a history sort of person but he definitely taught me more than I ever learned in high school. Amazing lectures and cares about students and their problems.
Buck is by far one of the worst professors I have ever taken at JJC. He is super inconsistent with his grading and takes off random points with no sort of explanation. Would not recommend to anyone.
I would recommend professor Buck for anybody majoring in History. You can tell that he loves his profession. He talks a bit fast so the note taking can be overwhelming at times. He takes off points randomly at times with little explanation. Overall, hes a solid professor.
Wants specific answers and WILL mark you off for not having exactly what he wants. Lots of lecture and has PowerPoints that dont follow.
Great lecturer, I was sad when class ended because he was so good at telling stories & I dislike history. I personally would take Professor Phil Mathew over him because Phil is just show up , listen, & get an easy A. Buck makes you work for your grade & *everything* is in essay format. I hated writing a journal every week & he is a tough grader.
Dr Buck was an awesome teacher. He tried to make boring lectures a little more interesting. If you do not like writing papers do not take his class! He assigns weekly journals and the tests are in essay format. Be ready to read and write a lot.
takes off random points, little to no explaining. if the answer is not exactly want he wants, will take off points. would recommend taking a class with him
3 tests, all essay format. very tough grader. will dock a grade for a few mistakes. does not clearly state what he expects in writing assignments. will take off points for missing information he did not ask for. 3 books, pointless discussion post assignments that could easily be turned in worked and should be such. no clear standards.
I had taken him due to the positive reviews from this website. However, they were really wrong this semester due to the class being moved online. Dr. Buck was hard to get ahold of and would take over weeks to answer questions when sent emails. The syllabus he presented was not followed throughout the year. He took awhile to grade assignments to.
Dr. Buck seemed uninvested in this class. History is my favorite subject and was my lowest grade. He didnt give good feedback, just repeated the same thing on every assignment. An example of his feedback was this, it was a bust and not much here. I would NEVER recommend this teacher, especially for online. His syllabus still reflects Spring 19.
All assignments were easy except for exams. Each exam would be two written response questions and if you think you have written enough you probably haven't. I would take notes in class and do all the readings so I felt pretty prepared for the exams but each time they got harder and harder. Just when you think you have done good you barely pass.
Dr. Buck has been my favorite professor at JJC. He LIVES for history, and his passion for the subject made me want to try that much harder. I loved his lecture materials. Don't bother taking his classes if you don't like to write, as all of the exams are essays. Each essay I wrote averaged about 6 pages. Wish I could've seen him lecture in person!
Nice guy who is passionate about history, but an EXTREMELY tough grader. I pulled all nighters, took detailed notes, studied day/night for exams, yet he'd still dock points for the littlest things. Eventually dropped the class. Take Dr. Buck if you enjoy history but don't really care about your GPA.
