I thought I was an econ major til I took this class. The lectures are dry (if you take the class, glance around and see all the people sleeping), the TAs arent helpful and Buckles is a good guy outside the classroom but tests and quizzes are completely based on the reading and are ridiculous.

Buckles is an excellent teacher. He is challenging, insightful, and very well read. He frequently supplements his classes with news from the day of the lecture and employs novel ways to make 200 person lectures interesting, intellectually stimulating, and fun. His class demands hard work and focus.

Buckles is an excellent teacher. I highly recommend taking his class, especially if you are thinking about majoring or minoring in economics. The class is not easy and you definitely need to keep up with the reading but you will learn a great deal.

Buckles is obviously brilliant but his lectures can be hard to understand. Go to class and pay attention. Multiple choice on weekly quizzes can be tricky even if you have studied. He is not very helpful during office hours. Work hard, but you may not do well in the class because of tricky questions.

His tests WILL**** you. He is an economic genius and his passion shows. I learned a lot in the class even though it was unbelievably hard. Read the class pack and do the problems in it, don't skip class, ask questions, and get a decent grade.

Fire Vrooman - Buckles has it covered. Smarter, fresher, and he tells better stories. One of the best professors at Vanderbilt. Weekly quizes are annoying, but keep you on your toes. Would have been ten times better if I could have taken them in my room.

I studied my butt off for a B, but I learned more than in any other class. Taking any of Buckles' classes requires a lot of dedication, but it is definitely worth it if you are interested in economics.

It's a no-brainer that all Vandy students must take his class. I recommend sitting in the front row lest you get lost in the masses. Whatever you do, DO NOT get behind on assignments or your grade will never recover.

Buckles is the man. His class sure isn't easy, but he knows exactly what he's talking about. Even if you aren't an econ major, definitly take at least a class with him.

Buckles is the man. Both of his classes are weed out ECON majors. It's not supposed to be hard, but Buckles will give you a run for your money. He twists questions in ways that make you have to think carefully because THAT'S JUST HOW GOOD HE IS AT GETTING YOU. You walk away learning how to think inductively.

I heard many bad things about him going into Econ 100. Yet, he really is not so bad and the class is totally worth taking. You will learn so much and his lectures are interesting! He knows his stuff so well- one the best professors at Vandy.

Do you: (1) Not have much experience with economics? (2) Really wanna get an A? DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It was more frustrating than any 200-level class I've ever taken in any other subject. Buckles is great, but mere earthlings are not welcome here.

Do not listen to anyone who says Buckles is unfair or a bad teacher. He is quite simply the best professor in this university. Knows everything, teaches it well, very nice in office hours. He is the man, the myth, the legend. Take everything he teaches.

Simply the best professor at Vandy! His tests are very hard, and you need to memorize past exams' answers to make a decent grade. He just knows so much, and is so passionate about the subject. Def take him for both 100 and 101 if you want to be an econ major. He drills the basics into your head, and make sure you never forget it.

Amazing professor. Goes out of his way to help you learn. The class is difficult but he gives you all of the materials you need to get an A, you just have to put time into it. Probably the best prof. I've had at vandy and he's so smart its ridiculous.

Interesting lectures, but if you're not interested in economics you'll probably find them boring. Tests are harder than average for a 100 lvl class. Attendance isn't recorded, but you can't really skip a lot since tests are difficult and it's hard to learn the material right from the book. Luckily many test q's come from lecture.

Buckles is simply the man. I've never learned more in any other class. It is definitely one of the hardest 100 level classes, but not impossible. Everyone at Vandy should take him.

Professor Buckles is the best professor I have had at Vanderbilt, but not to be confused with the best grade or the easiest class. It is a challenge for sure, a 100-level course that is for weeding out. If you have a slight interest in Econ, like I did, I highly suggest you challenge yourself and take advantage of why our tuition is so high.

Amazing professor. He wrote the textbook and it's a great tool that clearly explains everything and he uses the lectures to really drive home what the textbook says. Buckles is an amazing prof who could one of two things to you if you put forth an honest effort in his class: either a pretty good lecturer who has tough tests, or a man who will literally change your entire world-view by opening you up to the beauty of economics.

He's an amazing lecturer, but his exams are very hard. Sometimes questions seem to be worded very awkwardly. And also some things seem to be more subjective than they should be. What you and others may think be right may not be what he's looking for, and this is especially true for short answer/essay questions.

You have to study for Buckles, because the class is hard and not that helpful. Grading is very hard. The syllabus is clear about the assignments and the text is gold, so study it. In class, Buckles put me to sleep - almost impossible to pay attention and it didn't really help even if you did. Study the textbook and you'll do fine.

he's awesome... but i think it's a you like him or you don't. he's fair. go visit and ask questions during office hours- very helpful. for tests, look at sample exam distributed and short answers in the book and memorize those because he likes to see exact wording.

Professor Buckles is perhaps one of the best teachers at Vanderbilt. This class was not easy, but he is an amazing lecturer. I had very little interest in econ before taking this class for a requirement, but Buckles' class has inspired me to minor in it. You may not get the grade you want, but if you let it, this class may just change your life.

Wow! Buckles is an amazing teacher. He's an absolute genius, but unless you are an ECON major, and you know for sure you are...then take the class. He's one of those teachers that while in the process of learning a lot, you will do poorly. Study hard and manipulate his office hours. A "C" is the equivalent to an "A" in his class.

Not an easy A by any means. You have to make sure you understand every step in the train of thought he uses to explain concepts, but by the end you will know micro inside and out. TA's tend to lowball you on quizzes and not change the grade even if you're right. If this happens, go to Buckles. He'll listen to reason and fully explain any questions.

Frankly, I think his lectures are overrated. That said, the material isn't as difficult as people make it out to be. He says he doesn't want you to memorize, but you do have to essentially memorize his thinking process to do well on the free-responses. Tests can be frustrating at times, but the generous grading policy makes up for them.

He is really no the material and knows how to teach it. His exams are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT He curve them but still almost impassible to get an A. But in the end you will know econ but it will lower ur gpa.

Buckles is a really good lecturer and you will learn a lot in his class if you are willing to try. However, don't expect your grades to reflect how much you work or how much you know, that will remain frustrating. That said he is engaging and a good teacher.

Professor Buckles is extremely versed in Economics and is very passionate about the subject. Attendance is three percent of the grade. The lectures are mostly based on the classpack, but mostly enjoyable. The exams are extremely difficult and even with the curve it is difficult to score well. Weekly quizzes are also curved he drops lowest 2.

Fabulous teacher, obviously one of the big names at Vanderbilt. He is a fascinating lecturer and is careful to show you real-world applications.... The class is a LOT of work though. Weekly proctored quizzes and essays, that kind of thing. But Buckles makes it worth it. Do take ! you're wasting an opportunity if you don't!

The class isn't too hard if you actually take the time to read the textbook. The text is definitely more useful and informative than the lectures. Also, be sure to study the practice tests he posts online. They're very similar to the actual exams. With some effort an A is definitely possible.

Great Professor. With some work, its definitely possible to get an A/A-/B+ in this classes. Buckles and his team of TAs are very helpful during office hours and willing to help you understand the material. Between the practice exam and his lectures, he pretty much tells you all the essay questions on the exam (just listen very closely).

Buckles is the man! He is definitely not going to give out an easy A to anyone but does a great job making a somewhat boring subject interesting, relevant, and easy to understand. I learned more in this class than in any other this semester and am looking forward to taking Micro with him in the Spring.

A lot of people get upset and say that his class is impossible to do well in, but as long as you listen to what he says when you go and read the book he writes, then youll do great.

Need a lot of efforts to get a good grade but that's probably because it's a comprehensive class. Definitely do the sample exams online before the exams and read the textbook carefully before finals(you'd better start reviewing early!)

His tests and lectures are straight from the book, which makes his class run smoothly. You always know what to expect. The final is pretty difficult, and the tests during the semester aren't easy, but you can tell he really loves econ, which is refreshing. MUCH better than Vrooman.

Everything has already been said about this guy, but to sum up he's a great teacher, extraordinarily helpful in office hours, and you will learn more in this class than probably any other at Vanderbilt. A lot of people flame Buckles and it's really unjustified. Buckles is a brilliant lecturer and is incredibly accessible for help considering that he teaches about 1000 students a semester. If you don't enjoy Economics and/or have no plans in majoring/minoring, don't take Macroeconomics. Buckles is an outstanding lecturer, but at the end of the day, if you don't understand economics, even his accessibility can't help you. Tests and quizzes are challenging but fair if you think intuitively. Memorizing will not help you in this class!

Buckles is just great. I'm actually feelIng sad when I finished my last class with him today. I wish he is gonna teach some upperclass-level classes so I could take his classes again. Anyway, some people might find his lectures vague or hard to follow, in which case I would definitely suggest reading the textbook, which is so clear.

Buckles makes Economics come alive in lecture and often provides hints for exam free response, so go to class (attendance points too). Exams are progressively weighted, so you're rewarded for improvement. However, if you don't study properly, you'll likely to do worse on other exams. If you read and ask questions in office hours, you'll be fine.

Give DETAILED essay responses like the samples in the book, and you'll do fine with grading. He closes polling for clicker questions too fast, which is annoying because clicker questions = attendance points.

Doesn't set you up to fail. Curves al tests. You don't try, you don't pass.

Buckles is an extremely knowledgeable and humble man, and he is clearly passionate about his class. Participation credit (which is about 3%) is obtained from attending lecture and using clickers, and there are weekly online quizzes that cover 1-2 chapters of material, and there are three exams and one final. While exams are tough, the curves help.

If you took AP econ in hs & got credit for this class, do not take it thinking you will get an easy A out of it. AP is graph based and Buckles is all verbal (making it hard to understand if you learned it graphically). Very specific with short answer questions on exams. Weekly quizzes. Understanding guy and interesting though! Go to his offie hours

If you do not ave to take Buckles Econ, I would skip it, or take it PF later on. That said, this is a great class. You learn a ton, Buckles is the man, and his textbook is amazing! I got an A but even after having taken Econ before, this class made me work hard. NOT AN EASY A! The best way to study is being thorough with the textbook, sample exams and online quizzes. Be sure to keep notes for long and harshly graded essay questions. MCQs are not that bad. Econ majors-take this class as Buckles drills concepts into your brain

I was debating whether or not to use my AP credit and skip Macroeconomics because of its rumored difficulty. I am absolutely glad that I didn't. You will have to work in Professor Buckles' class, but it will be worth it. After you're done with his class, you will understand economics like you have never before. I strongly recommend it.

ECON100 with Prof. Buckles is good, but a mixed bag in some ways. Buckles explains material pretty clearly, but then asks somewhat vague multiple-choice questions on testsquizzes. I took 100 and 101 with Buckles, and I will say that he is a great lecturer, but the TA grading of essays can be a bit random. Buckles is awesome. He is VERY clear about his expectations and if you read the book and listen to lectures you can get an A. Go to class to answer the clicker questions because they are more important than they seem.

Professor Buckles is great! Really smart guy. Quizzes/paper are easy but make up a small portion of your grade. Participation is 3% (clicker q's) so go to class. Everything's based on the book, so read it and fill it in. Tests are tough, and questions are confusing. Generous curves somewhat make up for difficulty. Go to office hours, it might help.

Buckles is the guy in charge of weeding-out prospective econ majors. If you want to truly learn the basics and principles of Economics, he's your guy. However, if you think your GPA's more important, you probably shouldn't take him.

Some ratings here are not honest at all. Indeed, the course relies heavily on the textbook (you will want to read it for at least three times), but Buckles' lectures can be very good emphasis on the material. He is passionate and also very willing to help. A perfect performance is almost impossible, but he gives generous curves. High recommend.

Students taking ECON 1010 with Buckles should consider his lecture as an emphasis to the reading assignments that are supposed to be read prior to be coming to class. If you complete and understand the assigned reading, you should do fine in this class, considering the generous curves. Relying on lectures to spoon feed you and you will not do well.

The textbook is really important for this class, so read it and do the problems. His lectures range from very interesting to average. Overall, he is funny and he will answer all questions you bring to him. I cannot recommend him because 75% of the questions are tricky (worded weirdly or requiring topics not yet learned). Take Luea if you can.

Buckles's lectures barely help you understand what you are tested on. Read the textbook and fill in everything, and if you do not understand something go to office hours. Do not need to go to class but answer all top hat questions. Tests are difficult and you really need to understand the concepts to do well. Very specific grader on writing.

I ended up reading the textbook like 8 or 9 times through by the time the final came around. Reading and rereading and memorizing the what he says in the textbook is key to doing welll. have to put in a LOT of independent work

his lectures helped me understand the material much better, even though sometimes theyre a bit dry. pay attention though because he says exactly what the essays will be. also, definitely do the multiple choice questions at the end of the section because they help a ton on the quizzes.

Not until you go through the whole semester that you'll realize how good Buckles is. His lectures may not be that effective or clear, but the textbook and online quizzes should be enough for you to grasp the picture of prins of macro. Tests are doable with enormous curves. He is your best choice for 1010 by far if you care about how much you learn.

His lecturing style is not for everyone and his tests and quizzes are worded kind of bad, but beyond that, great teacher with charisma and knowledge.

Buckles is the best professor I had in the economics department. Not sure why there are some negative comments on here, but probably those are mostly from people who just didn't do well and are entitled. Buckles is clear, memorable, and funny. I remembered a lot of his stories and examples well after the class was over. Absolutely would take again.

Not going to lie, it's hard to get an A, but an A- or B+ is doable. GO TO OFFICE HOURS to ask for points back on open responses. Textbook teaches you most things, but he's a very nice professor who tries to keep the class engaged. Attendance is part of the grade, but not a huge amount.

Buckles is a very insightful teacher. You get what you put in for this class, so you have to put in the effort to see results. He is very helpful if you go to office hours.

This class is probably the best upper level econ one can take. Not too hard. Learn a ton about relevant topics. Not many graded things. Grade more based off being in class and adding to the discussion.

These are the keys to this class. 1. Show up to class 0 times unless it's a test day 2. Read the book as he assigns it, very, very carefully. 3. Study a decent amount for the quizzes or tests. If you do these things, an A is extremely, extremely doable.

People are too concerned about grades when it comes to Stephen Buckles. Yes, his test/quiz questions can be ambiguous (as econ often is), but if you read the textbook and understand it you should be fine, there are HUGE curves. All Buckles wants to do is get you to think like an economist, and that is more valuable than you think.

Buckles's macro policy seminar is a great option for an upper level econ class--people are turned off by their memories of buckles in the intros, but the seminar is where he really shines. The whole class consists of discussions of current events, two in class essays that are essentially policy recommendations, and a final paper, so not too bad.

I love Buckles. Brilliant teacher who wants his students to truly understand economics. His intro classes provide a solid foundation for future learning. Trust the guy - Go to class or at least take an hour out of your week to read the textbook. Tests are straight out of the book and pretty easy if you don't skip class and cram. Heavily curved

Stephen Buckles is like my grandpa. I love my grandpa, but idk if I'd wanna learn microeconomics from him. Lectures have a lot of tangents, not a fan, and maybe 1 or 2 things can be taken from class. Easy to read textbook- vv useful. Does not deserve the hate he gets, kids are lazy and his curve is wild, but ur likely gonna get shafted on frq.

This is an excellent class to satisfy a W-level requirement. There is not a single lecture. You just sit down and Buckles guides a lecture. Super great to bounce ideas around as a small class and he helps you really understand how the history of economic policy and what we should do now and in the future. Don't let his intro reviews scare you away
