He frequently supplements his classes with news from the day of the lecture and employs novel ways to make 200 person lectures interesting, intellectually stimulating, and fun. Frankly, I think his lectures are overrated. That said, the material isn't as difficult as people make it out to be. Tests can be frustrating at times, but the generous grading policy makes up for them.

The course itself is quite interesting, but it should not be taught by Buckles. Very nice and genuine guy, but his lectures are awful. The way he grades quizzes and tests are obscure, and will not explicitly tell you what your average is. Terrible at responding to emails. You are better off just reading the textbook, and not going to lecture.

Professor Buckles is one of the kindest professors out there but I wouldn't recommend taking his class unless you have to. His tests are insanely difficult. He takes forever to give you your grade back. The quizzes are okay but you essentially teach yourself and I'd skip lecture because he rambles and goes on tangents.

Unclear grading criteria. Lectures are dull and move too slowly. Attendance is mandatory but I feel like I got more confused by going to lecture. Read textbook and do practice questions. Tests try to be tricky, but not in a good way. Questions can be extremely unclear. Short answer criteria are specific so its possible to fail with the right answer

Maybe he was once a great teacher and economist as the other reviews say. Maybe he once could teach a class without forgetting/messing up all of the material. Not anymore. He repeatedly loses tests, gives incorrect grades, and does many other careless actions. Avoid at all costs.

Did not have a good experience. His lectures are boring and didn't help me in the slightest. I relied on his textbook mostly. He isn't accessible and provides shaky direction at best. Totally oblivious to the needs and experience of his students. Not only that, but he messed up many of the final grades and now won't discuss it until August.

Buckles's macro policy seminar is a great option for an upper level econ class--people are turned off by their memories of buckles in the intros, but the seminar is where he really shines. The whole class consists of discussions of current events, two in class essays that are essentially policy recommendations, and a final paper, so not too bad.

I can't really put into words how much I dislike this class. The lectures will actually confuse you more, and his questions are so badly worded that a 50% on a test is often equal to an A or B. You would learn just as much if you just read the textbook on your own time. The only thing this class will accomplish for you is giving you unneeded grief.

Terrible Professor. Maybe is accomplished, but cannot teach an intro-level class for his life. Grading criteria for exams is extremely unclear, lectures are useless (he spends more time on tangents than actually explaining class material), and TAs are god awful. Spend time memorizing his textbook, as that's all that seems to work for exams.

Pretty sure the pandemic and the transition to online learning have done a number on this guy's ability to teach. Clear that he cares a lot about students' learning, but the class is extremely disorganized (barely makes use of Brightspace), it takes forever to get grades back, and honestly I have no sense of what grade I will get in this class.

Do not take this class for intro to micro. Tests and quizzes were so unnecessarily difficult and you have no idea what your grade in the class is because he just gives letter grades. We also never got our grades from the final back. If you have to take micro and he is the only option, wait a semester and take it with someone else. Seriously.

One of the worst experiences ever. An easy class made difficult by an incompetent professor. Buckles clearly did not know how to use technology with graphs done on paper being held up to the laptop camera. His test questions were difficult to understand, even if the concept was easy. Buckles also wrote the textbook which is poorly written.

Great guy who wrote a fantastic textbook but is sadly pulled down by useless lectures and stingy TAs. A is achievable if you just read the textbook and learn how the TAs grade free response. You can still get points off for them if Ben's having a bad day though, sadly. Weekly quizzes, a couple of papers, two midterms, and a final.

He's probably past his prime. Lectures are dry, random, and not very helpful. Plus, sometimes he will just say something that is wrong. His textbook is very good though, and honestly far more useful than lectures. Everything on tests is worded weirdly so you're never totally sure what he's asking. Curves are pretty nice though.
