MAkes discussions a lot of fun, very dry humor, uses lots of examples and parallels. No final exam, but his 4 tests were pretty hard. T/F, shrt ansr, but the questions are very tricky, even if you're read up on the material.
i actually like going to this class...it is so funny!
Do not take PHIL101 with this guy, he is a hard grader.
Great Teacher, Dry sense of humor, Enjoyable Class.
Very easy. I dont even read the books and I get A's on his quizzes. He DOES have a dry sense of humor and says things about my girl Britney Spears. Very funny though and an easy EASY teacher for philosophy 101.
This class is fairly easy but the 2hrs and 40min are spent listening to Dr. Carey having conversations with himself and making jokes that nobody laughs at. He's nice but is incredibly boring and you learn nothing in the class.
Enjoyable class. Dry sense of humor. All tests have essay, T/F, multiple choice. Different grading system that I didn't like.
horrible sense of humor, extremely condescending & unpolite. thinks that by embarassing his classmates, he will look cool.
I love his class. What a sweet man.
Very funny. If you actually go to class and pay attention you will learn alot. Gives great examples to help you understand the more difficult subjects.
helpful teacher... but hard class- even if you read the material is very difficult. attendance is a must if you expect to pass
Stephen Carey was the best professor I have had at VCU. I took Philosophy 212 as an elective since one of my friends recommended him. He is very friendly and gets to know each person one on one in the class. The topics he discusses are very interesting: abortion, drug legalization, death penatly.
good teacher, just pay attention, take notes, and laugh at his jokes... desire not what you want, but what you get...
This teacher grades unfair, i did all the work and repeated back to him what he said would be right, then he says that makes no sense. a friend took it and completely missed one quiz, she received a zero on a quiz and still got a b, so he is unfair and his jokes are LAME. dont take him waste oftime
This is the easiest college class I have ever taken. You must go to class, though!! Just take notes and spit it back out to him on the test! Easy A, if you can put up with his DRY sense of humor for 15 weeks!
I agree completely with the comment from 12/27/04
He was so easy!!! This is a cake class, all you have to do is show up and listen
Easy class, Easy teacher, Easy A. I don't think I studied or did any homework for this class. Still managed to get an A
He is the greatest, makes this class so much fun!
He's a nice guy and his class is easy, but he thinks he is a stand up comedian which I don't like. He tries to makes jokes, but they just fail. It kind of makes the class painful. Overall, you can not do much and still do well.
Attendance is a must if you expect a top grade.
His 101 class is easy from what I see, but his 212 class is impossible. He is not clear about what you do and do not need to know for the tests. While his lectures are entertaining, they provide little insight to the material. Also, the tests are all true/false and essay. This class is really awful.
Cool professor. He isn't all serious like sum or nerdy like others. He has a humor hat some people would call dull but it's better than him lecturing all the time in a monotone voice.
very good professor. take him
i took him for 101, the syllabus seemed kind of intimidating but once things got rolling it was really easy. his approach to teaching made things easier to understand and his class provided that well needed "break" during a hectic day. i saw him available for my 213 class but he filled up very quickly and i got stuck with redmon.
if you get the old exams, he uses the EXACT same ones!!! put in about 5 hours total of work for the entire semester, and that was just to memorize the old exams, easy A, and never went to class (but only if you have old exams of course)
He's a nice guy with corny jokes. You need to go to classes and pay attention and take notes to do well on the exams. Without class the reading is useless. Go to class and pay attention, then write down everything you remember on the exam and you should be fine. Little to no studying if you do that, I got easy A's on the exams with about an hou
Go to class; he essentially gives the answers to the test essay questions. I rarely studied for this class, but attended most of the time and got a 'B'. Very witty, and a nice guy.
I love Professor Carey. He was very accommodating when I needed to reschedule an exam and is a really nice guy. I rarely went to class, failed all of the tests and somehow got a C...totally undeserved on my part and I have no idea how he came up with that, but no complaints from me.
3wk Summer Class: 4 tests T/F and short answer (a few sent.) not ****ulative. attend not mandatory but tests come from lecture. text only used 'just in case' i missed notes & readings were short. his lecutures are often funny and he is an excellent teacher in all aspects (knowledge, respect, etc). do check your tests to see if he misgraded though.
He was seriously one of my best prof. ever! I def understood the subject better and there was no stupid homework
He's pretty cool. There's no cumulative final, and the exams are T/F with some short answer questions.
Class was kinda interesting. Attendance is mandatory. The exams are short, 30 questions. Half true/false and the rest short answer. The class was okay.
DO NOT take this class if you are not a good note taker. he thinks his class is easy but it is not. You do not know whats going to be on the tin order to prepare for it. so your stuck going over everything for that section of that semester. to be on the test. Four test the whole semester, true and false and short answer
Okay, but mostly just talks at you for the whole class, which is boring. Can be funny, and the tests are not that hard if you read the book and go to class.
4 tests only worth 30 points each, which does not give you much room for error. He is funny and lets you go pretty early. It was challenging and sometimes the true/false questions were tricky.
Carey is completely hilarious! Honestly looked forward to going to his class every Tue./Thur. Very interesting if you do the reading and are willing to broaden your mind. Not for "stick-in-the-mud" students. Part of his teaching act is truely "acting" those who don't get his sarcasim think he's a complete idiot when in actuality he's pure genius.
An amazing teacher! He made the material interesting. I spent most of the class laughing because he is so funny. Take good notes, the tests come straight from the lectures.
The class is him talking the whole time. Some days are interesting others not so much. True and False tests with short answer. True and False are tricky even though he doesn't think so. You have to attend class to understand and do well on the tests. You take a loooot of notes.
very clear, dry humor, keep up with readings and you'll do fine
I liked him. He's funny. His class is easy. Attendance not mandatory but you should just attend and not read. You'll still pass. He explains things well and I like it when he writes stuff down.
Incredibly condescending if you ask ANY question. Does not respond to emails. Does not teach, but grand stands. Finds himself clever. Very boring. Talks incessantly about outside life- son in Cali, dog "Shadow," etc., and not enough about material. Doesn't cover whole book, or even a sizable fraction of it. LONG class. I want my money back!
Attendance not mandatory but gives lot's of notes must have notes to do well on the exam. There are four exams T/F questions and the rest are essays.
Carey is a really funny guy and is really good at teaching a really boring subject. I actually enjoy his class when at first I thought I would hate it. Doesn't take attendance but all of the material comes from his lectures. You are an idiot if you can't pass this class.
If you don't get his sense of humor, you might not enjoy this class, but I thought he was hilarious and it made his lectures more enjoyable. He's able to clearly explain otherwise dry subjects and makes them interesting! You should go to class if you want to get a good grade, although attendence isn't mandatory. His tests are so easy!
I came to class 5 times and got a C. So easy to pass boring thouh.
Extremely boring, amusing at times, but overall boring. This class was basically a dumbed down version of a real philosophy class. No learning occurs. 4 tests, with a bogus grading scale, and that's it. Light work load isn't worth sitting through his class, though. About as exciting as Ben Stein, with less humor.
great teacher..corny at times but he tries..teaches exactly what is on the exams...attendance not mandatory but needed to get detailed notes..i missed a couple of classes so I ended with a B..he curves grade at the end if close since grading can be different..but highly recommended...buy book helps in class
hilarious guy! he doesn't take attendance but you really have to come to class with the text book to do well on exams. 4 take home exams. his grading can be a little harsh on essays and I found the multiple choice to be worded confusingly. I loved his lecture, though he doesn't do much debating with students. I'd take his class again. :-)
Easy enough class- just pay attention & attend lectures, you should be fine. Exams were take home but if you weren't attending or listening in class you won't do well. Textbook is a necessity. He's fun to listen to & really tries to get his students interested!
Easy class, good teacher. Even with a short class period of 3 weeks, we covered a lot & got to discuss quite a bit in class. Attend class, do the reading, & you should do find on the take home tests. If you don't do well in this class then it is because you aren't trying, attending, or doing any reading!!
Dr. Carey is a great teacher. He is clear. He doesn't use power points, but he writes on the board. His class revolves around analyzing articles from the textbook. Issues discussed are Abortion, Euthanasia, Drug Policy in the US, Ethics, Just War Theory, and Economic Equality. His tests are take home. Nice guy
One of the best teachers I've had thus far. Extremely clear in all of his lectures. Repeats and rewords complex ideas to make sure students understand them. Very nice and unassuming, and obviously extremely intelligent. Attendance is not mandatory, but I advise you to attend and take lots of notes, or else you'll have trouble on the take home exams
The class is based on four take home tests which are made up mostly of true/false questions and a few essays. It's a pretty easy A. My only gripe is that he takes forever to post your final grade.
His take home exams are very easy. recording his lectures. He goes over a lot of the answers in class. He never helped me when I had a question, he just simply agreed with whatever i said or seemed bothered.
I deserved an A in the class and received a B. I record the lectures b/c the book is no help at all. I got 100% on most exams and for one exam he decided to mark off points b/c * I copied lines from the book*. I didn't even read the book.I did the same for every test. My right answer was marked wrong when I wrote down what he said in class.
Really nice guy with great personality and a little bit of humor. The book is hard to understand, but you'll do fine on the take home exams if you listen and take notes in the lectures.
Nice guy, knows material really well, explains concepts clearly. As long as you take notes, including examples, you'll be fine. Also, he really likes cats.
His lectures are not mandatory, but really help with understanding whats in the book. He is easy to listen to and explains concepts clearly. The whole grade is take home tests and one paper.
Dr. Carey is a bit nutty, but his classes are pretty straight forward. Go to class, read the book, and make sure you read and reread the questions on his tests.
Record his lecture because he talked about the exams. Don't ever skip. After you record type up everything so you have amazing notes. Do this you will ace his exams. If not get a B. also book is pointless and confusing. Don't bother.
All the tests are online; however, that does not mean that they are easy. The tests are really hard. Go to every class. Write notes and study like this is your only class.
I would not recommend this class with this professor. I had him for fall semester in the morning and it was a drag. Also, he has the tendency to be kind of rude in emails and test feedback. He unjustifiably took off points and when I questioned him about it, he completely ignored me. He made the subject completely uninteresting.
I wouldn't recommend this class. Not as interesting as I was hoping. We never had any class discussions or interactions to see what the class had to say, just his lecturing. Attendance is not mandatory in terms of your grade but whats in his lectures are sometimes on the tests. If you read and go to class you should do fine. Take notes too!
Easy yes. Helpful no. Received an 89.2. Did not round me even though I deserved a point back on an exam. Is "ABOVE" you. Will talk down to you and tell you that you're wrong. Even though it's a philosophy class that should be open to different views. HIS interpretation of the material. Exams are INTENTIONALLY written to trick you. One paper.
Not only is the guy horribly boring but he is quite the stickler. Granted I only went to class once and got the B, the grade was a 107.5/ 120 (89.6) and it was not rounded up. If you can't avoid it, make sure you take the class with a friend or two. Most of the tests have the answers after them.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! I got A's on all of my test except one and got a B in the class. You basically have to get a 100 on all the test if you want the A. He is beyond boring and he doesn't allow any kind of interaction between students which is sad because this is a philosophy class. You would think the biggest thing to do is discuss topics.
His attendant is not mandatory but he will failed you if you do not show up regardless. This is written course he will make up stuff just to grade your response wrong. Avoid him
DO NOT TAKE. His tests are highly application and theory based, so if you don't know the articles through and through you will not pass. He is also BORING at 8 am. Run for the hills!!
I came to school to learn, but each time I enter into this mans class I lose a few thousand brain cells. Does it count as learning when you're being taught the incorrect information? That's all the philosophy I get from this class.
His tests are online (so open book) so the class should be easy but he likes to asks tricky questions. Plus he takes attendance by requiring a a short paper at the end of each class based off of the previous class' lecture. However he doesn't grade these papers off of content, just completion. He is very boring. Book is helpful but not needed.
Didnt really use the book at all so dont even bother buying it. Tests are 30 questions each and are all T/F so if you are like me and hate that kind of thing avoid him. Tests were online though so that helped a bit. we had to write a 1 page paper for almost every class, not hard, it was graded on completion not content but still tedious.
Textbook required if you want to know what in the world the man is talking about. Philosophy courses are heavy tangents of thoughts they come up with. Be prepared to never meet with him outside of class because 'he's too busy.' Also be very specific in your free response answers and reading the textbook will help you achieve this.
Pretty much reads straight out of the textbook and off of Wikipedia. He ignores students questions both in class and in emails and there is no class discussion of any kind. Extremely tough grader and there are only four grades for the entire semester (all online open note tests).
He's not the worst professor, he is pretty boring to listen to and his class is entirely lecture based. If you read the material, take notes, and use online help (like sparknotes), the class is an easy A. We didn't get through all the reading intended on the syllabus. Read Locke, Berkeley, Malebranche, and a few others.
He's not too bad, but this guy does not use an ounce of technology. So you will need to come to class for the lectures. There are only 4 exams in the class, and you have no other opportunities to earn points in the class. You do need the book for the free response questions on the tests. So if you can, please try and take another professor.
He's pretty monotone but if you go to class and take notes on what he says he basically gives you all the answers for the test. Never read the book and just went to class and did pretty well on all the tests. Only grades are 4 tests and no final.
He is an okay professor. Not the worst, not the best. No need to get the book, but if you do - it wouldn't hurt to get the online copy. The tests are all online (multiple choice and some short answer). Be sure to take detailed notes in class, typing them worked well for me, but written notes can also work too (either way, make sure they're good!)
He is the worst professor I've ever experienced. His tests are so vague and I read the textbook multiple times yet still found the tests very difficult. I get A's in my other classes and he gave me a C. His grading is unjustifiable and unfair. Doesn't respond to multiple emails sent from students only wanting to get help from him. Unhelpful.
This Professor is very monotone and really hard to listen to at 8:00. I cant really tell if he actually believes the things he says or if he is just talking straight from the textbooks. His exams are confusing and you kind of have to assume some of the information. He is the only one who talks so don't take his class if you want a debate
This class itself is not difficult at all. However, this professor and his lectures is like watching paint dry. There are only four test which makes up the only assignments in the course and his lectures doesn't cover any of the material on them. The book is required but I've read it and it also doesn't cover any of the material on the test.
I LOVE Dr. Carey! I'll admit I didn't care for him at the start--he seemed very dry and bland and the class is entirely lecture-based. However, when I asked him something he was always kind, respectful, and also has a fantastic dry humor which I adore. He may not be for everyone but I would gladly take him again. BTW, just 4 tests and no homework!
Very boring and monotone lecturer. Went in thinking this class would be an easy A, but the only grades are 4 tests that are given online that have nothing to do with what he lectures about. No discussions or papers. Wish I took a different professor.
Show up, take some notes of the highlights, and it is not that hard to get a passing grade or an A. No quizzes. Only 4 tests, but a lot of material is covered on the tests. Text book is not required but is referenced a lot during lectures with passages.
I didn't enjoy this class at all. I specifically made an account just to give a poor rating. Attendance isn't worth anything but is required. If you do poorly on one test good luck trying to bring your grade up. This class is boring and his tests are hard to study for (the book didn't help at all).
More often than never, you will contemplate your existence in Dr. Carey's debateless, traditional lecture-style class. Once you are aware of this, you will understand the meaning of Philosophy.
If you can take notes and learn without any sort of visual aid then maybe youll be fine. The professor is nice but lacks in enthusiasm for the class that he teaches. He just stands at the podium and reads off of pieces of paper while talking in a monotone voice, he occasionally writes names and other small notes on the board.
Carey is very monotone and reads from his notes in this class, HOWEVER, I think this is a generally easy class without heavy workload, just show up to class & take notes. He does take attendance which is why I got a B instead of an A, the online at home tests are directly from his notes, write down everything he SAYS and writes on the board.
Only gives you 4 exams. Thats all of your grades.
I took him Fall 2019. He's one of the most boring, dry professors I've ever met. He has a very monotone voice and often repeats the same jokes over and over (they're funny the first few times though) and does not really allow discussion/answer questions. He just prattles on for 90 minutes while you struggle to stay away. Pro: Really easy tests.
As an asynchronous class, ethics didn't seem that bad at first - some readings and one discussion post a week. But there's 4 exams which are weighted heavily, and there are questions that don't reference any of the material from the readings. And since there are no lectures, it feels unfair to ask us about material we never went over
he posts his own commentary/annotations for the readings, so you don't actually have to go through them. weekly discussions with replies. the exams were easy, just reference his commentaries. it has most, if not all the answers. very straightforward and easy course.
Great class. Take him instead of Professor Moon. Easy peasy, and you can actually understand the topics... 1/2 discussions a week based on readings and commentaries. Straight to the point, the readings were engaging.
I have not finished the class but oh my days I would rather be concussed than do another week of this summer course. Professor Carey is not a professor that aligns well with me: there are four exams, and discussion posts that are not labeled as formal assignments. He forgets to upload material, but just blurt out any random sentence and you're fine
