Dr. Cheng is amazing. He is super nice, very approachable and he has a very awesome argile print sweater. His assignments arent too long or too hard and the midterm follows directly from the assignments if you study. If you put in the work, a good mark is possible for this class.
Really nice, approachable prof. Assignments are pretty easy and so is the midterm. Only bad point is he uses power point, which makes the material is a bit dry. Recommended if you're looking for a good mark.
Dr. Cheng will answer emails within 20 minutes even on weekends. Apparently he likes what he does. His notes come straight from the textbook so it's pretty slack.
He's pretty good but I found that he just gave you the information without explaining it well.
Can't understand at all. Doesn't answer straight forward questions. Rushes through power points. Don't learn anything from class, you have to go back through the text book in order to understand everything. Do not reccomend at all!!
He is a good teacher but sometimes hard to understand. He is appraochable but sometimes you are unable to get anything out of his help, so it makes you have to rethink of the way you are going to ask him questions. I would take another class from him.
This class was brutal! Cheng copied & pasted his power points out of the text book. Pretty much every class was spent racing to copy the notes & not focussing on the examples which were poorly explained. The textbook was my bible for the semester. HE needs to take some English classes!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM IS POSSIBLE!
hard class
very good prof and easy to talk to
If you are a first year student take from him! He will spoon feed you the material it is like you haven't even left highschool. Don't waste your money on the text book. You barely need to study for exams because they are so easy. With the least bit of effort you will boost your mark to over an 80, GUARANTEED! There is no better Chem Prof!
Ok prof. if you dont get the material right away you are in big trouble but other than that you should do alright. There are better profs out there but hes far from the worst
Cheng is a good guy. He is fairly difficult to understand at times, and seems to avoid answering students questions. However, his final is easy. His midterm is fairly easy, and if you took chem30, you are golden. BUY the text!! You will need it, as he goes through examples very quickly and if you cannot comprehend, it will be your life-saver!
Awesome! Very easy assignments and tests. Enjoys teaching and really wants to help you learn. What a wonderful person.
Dr. Cheng is an excellent prof. He gives you outlines for the notes off his webpage which help a lot for taking notes. He really tries to help his first year chem students suceed and if you've taken chem 30 you're pretty much set.
Dr. Cheng's great. The assignments are really helpful when it comes to learning the material and the exams are easy. He doesn't expect you to know details, just mechanisms and such. He's hilarious too.
i wish steve was my father...he is so funny and his assignments are easy but they are exactly what we need to be successful in his class...he plays piano sometime to entertain the class and he is ALWAYS crackin wonderful jokes...his accent is fairly understandable and sooooo funny...i had him for 102 and 240 and its sweet
Pretty cool OCHEM prof. WAY better than any ochem profs so if u ever have the chance to take his class TAKE IT. His assignments were pretty easy, and they are exactly what you need to do in order to succeed in the class. Just pay attention to his class and you wouldnt have to buy the txtbook. ALWAYS in his office and REALLY helpful. KEEP IT UP
Great Organic Chem Prof. The assignments are exactly what you need to learn and understand in order to succeed in his class. Is ALWAYS in his office ready to help and is funny to boot. DONT buy the ochem txt, Cheng is way better resource. IF you can take it from Cheng DO IT!
Take the class from him if you can. He really cares about his students succeeding, and has no bizarre expectations. He took a class that has a reputation of being insane and made it very doable. I really appreciated having him as a prof.
What can I say, he should teach every subject. Awesome prof. He made organic chem understandable, and seem easy. One word of advice though, DO YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS! These are what will help you do well in his class.
Great teacher, always helpful, sometimes he would answer my e mails within minutes, compared to other teachers who take about a week. He made the class so easy if he made the tests five times harder I still would have had a great mark.
His lectures always flew by, and he makes awesome jokes in class. He responds to emails punctually, and is approachable. He makes lecture outlines to reduce writing, and his tests are fair (He gives you little hints throughtout the year on what he'll test on, so pay attention during his lectures). Definately take this Prof!!!
Dr. Cheng made the class really easy to get a good mark in, but could have had higher expectations for his class. I think more material could have been covered and in a bit more depth.
Dr. Cheng has got to be one of the greatest profs to take chemistry from. His lecture outlines are excellent and if you can ace his assignments you will have no trouble with the midterm or the final.
He is the best prof in the entire chem department hands down. It is probably impossible to get under a 70 in this class unless you're actually stupid. He will look over your assignments before the due date so you always get 100, his midterm is super easy, and hes an amazing teacher. He also says okay 500 times a class so enjoy. If you try, easy 90.
Very clear. Post notes online. Simple assignments. Post reviews online too.
Funny and good at explaining topics.
Cheng is amazing! I had a 50 in high school chem and I will end the semester with an 80. If you attend lectures and do assigns, easy 80. He tells you what is on midterm and final. He also gives hints throughout the semester as to what to study! Take with him!!!!!
What a fabulous prof. I loved chemistry going in, and even though I had already covered all of the material in high school he kept me interested. So funny and has the cutest sweaters. I felt completely prepared for organic chem after taking his class. Change your schedule so you can take classes from him!
Dr. Cheng is a wonderful professor. I can truly say that he cares about student success. He has office hours every day of the week and answers emails within hours. His class was enjoyable - which means a lot in a class of this difficulty - and his lecture notes were outlined perfectly. Never once had to use the textbook for clarification. Amazing!
Very easy!!!
Great Prof makes a tough class easy. Dont take OCHEM from anybody else. Dont bother buying the textbook
Really awesome guy. He gives great notes and is really helpful. You'll do good in this class if you show up and pay a reasonable amount of attention.
Cheng was overall a great prof!don't even bother buying the text,he teaches right from it,so pay attention in the lectures(he also gives hints for exams)!Do ur assignments and you're golden for the midterm and final.U might seem lost a couple times as he goes a bit fast, but just review ur notes and text and you'll be good to go!says ACTUALLY a lot!
Great Prof! Highly Recommended! Midterm/ Final were tricky but if you prepare yourself and show up for class you'll succeed. He's very approachable and loves teaching!
Cheng was amazing. Do not take chem 104 from anyone else. He gives hints from midterms and finals throughout course. The assignment questions are exactly was appears on final and midterm. Do assignments though (only work 5%). They make the difference. Great guy.
he is awesome
Great teacher. Knows what he is talking about and is able to register it with class. Goes through every bit of material so you understand how to do questions and concepts. Plenty of examples done in class. As a bonus, he is also pretty funny.
Fantastic prof! The only one to take entry level chemistry from. Very clear; make sure you take down all notes from the board... Textbook not necessary.
Stephen Cheng was my favorite prof this semester. For Chemistry, if you review the homework assignments and scan the notes you should get at least an 80 in his class. I recommend him for sure. Also, I did not use a textbook too often in this course, so I would suggest saving your money! Everything you need is given to you by Cheng himself!!!
Great Prof. Don't buy the textbook, you won't use it at all. He gives MANY hints for the final and midterm, and all you really have to do to study is review his weekly assignments. Very very highly recommended. If you study moderately, you will get a great mark.
Hilarious & a genius. Best Chem prof you can get at UofR. Easy midterm and final if you study and assignments very similar to in-class examples. Lab medium difficulty. Textbook helpful to do extra practice, but use very little. Fantastic teacher!
Great prof!!! Usually hate chem but he makes it easier to understand and is so helpful for anyone who needs it and he's hilarious in class. Surely recommend for students who may have had trouble with chem in the past!
He made the hardest class in university easy. There was TONS of information, but as long as you do all of his assignments before the final you'll easily attain an 80 or higher. This is true for the 3 chemistry classes I have taken from him. Cheng is the man to take chemistry from! His cute laugh does turn less cute during a hard lecture though...
Easily the best chem prof at U of R! He successfully made an extremely hard class MUCH easier. Still a hard class regardless, but if you take down all his notes, do all the assignments and go to class every day it's definitely doable. His exams are based closely off his assignments so there's no surprises. So helpful and so funny! Awesome prof!
Dr. Cheng is the best prof on campus. Make sure you do your assignments. The assignments are the key to getting high 90's in this class. Do them, redo them, and do them again. Make sure you can do them without notes and make sure you know why you got the answer you did.
Best teacher. His midterm and final are very well timed so no rush. Do your assignments, which all have bonus marks!!
Absolutely amazing professor. Very clear about course material and expectations for exams. Funny and engaging during lectures. You can tell he wants his students to excel; very approachable outside of class. Midterms and final are fair and based almost exclusively on homework assignments. Do the weekly assignments, and you'll do well in the course.
I had Cheng for 104 & 105 and he was great. Assignments were easy. Midterm and final were easy if you study. He tells you what to know. Says 'ok' a lot but other than that he is awesome.
Dr. Cheng is, without a doubt, the best professor to have for any class. His homework assignments parallel the notes taken in class (which necessitates attendance); knowing how to do the homework proficiently essentially guarantees a good grade on his midterm/final. Very helpful and available outside of lectures.
His markers are the worst markers ever!!He has 3 markers, and they are extremly hard on assignments. The markers not given partial marks for the question, if the question worth 10 marks, you will get zero if the final answer is wrong. And some of the questions even totally marked wrong by the markers. The marks for the assignments not fair&stupid!
Cheng is the best. He wants you to succeed. Assignment are fair and by paying attention to lecture and using your lecture notes as a guide, its easy to get 100% each time since theres bonus marks. Go to him if you cant get an assignment. Take Cheng over any other professor.
Dr. Cheng is one of the best teachers I've ever had. As previously said, he WANTS students to succeed and has great assignments to facilitate this goal. His exams reflect his lecture notes, his examples, and the assignments and he also gives many hints of what to expect on exams. His open-door policy is very helpful as well. TAKE CHENG. Okay? Okay.
this Prof is the best one in the CHEM field, i you are planning to take CHEM 140 , don't think of anyone else , he makes it very easy , and his exams are based on his assignments , he even tells u what to study . Amazing prof love him.
Best and most awesome prof you will have in first year. Makes general chem funny and interesting and always has crazy examples.
very good professor but not as good as talked up to be!!!! has terrible markers that he uses and they don't give consistent marks and this can result in tons of varying in assignments and tests. also very hard to understand and answers students questions sometimes in cheeky remarks.
Stephen is a great prof! He makes his lectures clear and very enjoyable to go to. If you attend all lectures and do the assignments you will easily succeed in his class. If you need any help he is willing to help outside of class too. He is also very funny.
Write down what he writes down on the board and do your assignments and the class is a breeze. His accent really isn't a big deal; if you don't understand what he is saying, try a science study group and read through the powerpoint slides after class.
Best best best best Chem prof Ever I had in my whole life. Highly recommended.
Awesome professor! Truly cares about teaching his students.. has SO MANY office hours! If you attend every lecture, do the assignments, put in some studying effort and go to study sessions/office hours you will do well :). Final exam was very fair as well!
Took this class two years ago, but thought I should clarify. People say he's the best, but nearly all of those reviews are for Chem 104. It's an introductory course which he heavily spoonfeeds you through. Don't think chemistry will be so easy and magical because of him. Take Chem 251, and he's still a great prof, granted you put the work in.
A really great professor, he tells a lot of goofy jokes. He explains well in class and prepares you well for the exams if you do the course work
Taught stereochemistry and alkanes. Take the first section seriously. The midterm is based on class examples and paper assignments. However, when another prof takes over, the class gets very hard. Therefore, make sure you know Sn1, Sn2, E1 and E2 inside out. Also understand acids and bases. PRACTICE OCHEM! Cheng is a wonderful prof who can help you
Such a great prof! Funny, uses examples you can actually understand, easy marker, always willing to meet with you to review concepts
Although it was hard to understand his accent now and again, Cheng was a funny, and helpful guy. He made sure to cover all the material that was on any testassignment. He did give out weekly assignments, but they weren't hard if you were present for class. I Would definitely recommend him to anybody taking a Chem class.
He explains things very clear and gives you similar examples. If I could change anything I would say ensure that you read every chapter and do the homework assignments as you go through the material in class. It will just be less studying in the end. I found the amount of material hard to remember but I also struggle with Chemistry.
Honestly, the best chem prof for a first year at the u of r! As long as you attend his lectures and go over your assignments you will do GREAT in the class! DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. You will fall behind if you do so! Just like in any other uni class. Would highly recommend him! :)
Amazing prof for first year Chem. He always gives in-depth explanations of everything. I was never left with questions or uncertainty about how to do something. Midterm and Final were very fair and well timed, don't rush yourself. Redo the assignments and re-read the lecture notes before the tests and you're golden. Daily review is not necessary.
Was seriously the easiest class of first semester. 98 and I barely did anything except the assignments. He explains everything to a tee and his midterms and his final were a piece of cake. Many office hours. Hilarious. Do not consider any other chemistry prof for first year chem. Seriously. Auto-pass with Cheng!
I loved his class. He's hilarious and a great prof. Probably the easiest class I took in first semester. Definitely recommend him.
Really funny and engaging professor! The material, assignments, exams and labs are straightforward and interesting. I highly recommend him.
He's my favorite prof! He's hilarious and very approachable. Homework due every week but they do really help and serve as study guide for midterms and final. So sad that he doesn't teach upper level Chemistries. Take him if you want your GPA to boost up :)
Dr. Cheng explained things well and he went through many examples but he is hard to understand sometimes and his lectures are BORING. Rarely went to class, just did weekly assignments with the textbook.
Stephen (aka 2 Cheng) is a great chem prof. I enjoyed his classes even though I do not like chemistry at all. Very fair midterm based off of the assignments he gives.
Good prof an knows what he's talking about but try to sit in the front few rows if you can because he's hard to hear. He uses a microphone but it doesn't help a lot. Pay attention in class and you'll do really well.
At times I found it hard to understand him, mostly due to how loudly he speaks into the mic. He does try to trip students up on his test so make sure you really know your material.
Stephen is fantastic lecturer and his assignments are very fair. However, if you do not study properly, his midterm will hit you like a truck. This past semester, a lot of people failed the midterm because they tried memorization instead of practice, which does not work. Be prepared to struggle in the best way possible.
Stephen Cheng is awesome. I highly recommend this prof.
Dr Cheng is my favourite prof. He makes things so easy to understand and always carefully goes through many examples with the class. There is a homework assignment every week, but they are easy and boost your mark. The assignments are very good to practice studying with. Make sure you sit closer to the front as sometimes he is a bit hard to hear.
Great choice for chem 140. He is upfront and clear about the difficulty of the class and his expectations of each student. Doing all the homework and studying well in advance of tests is recommended to keep all the info straight because of the fast-paced nature of chem 140
Many examples in class and tries to ensure everyone understands the material. There is an assignment every week. They are good studying tools but can be an annoyance if you only get a couple of days to work on it since the lessons haven't been covered yet. Ensure you ask questions in class otherwise he gives some attitude if you meet after class.
Really good prof! Should walk out with a decent mark if you put this class at the top of your priority list. Best prof to take this class with except if you can get in at first nations then take it there
chem Sucks but this guy makes it alright
He is difficult to understand because of his accent and also just because of the way he talks. Definitely knows what hes talking about and gives a ton of information so hes a very good professor.
He goes through the content too quickly, and it often doesn't align with the assignments he gives outside of class. On exams and assignments he appears to expect students to know things that weren't taught in the class. His multiple choice on exams is very difficult, and if you get the wrong final answer for a calculation type question, you get 0.
O Chem is rough, but Stephen is a great prof. He posts lecture notes and you barely have to write besides examples (if you print them). Don't take this class if its not mandatory, theres no lab final but its a very heavy course.
Cheng is a good prof but gives you attitude if you ask questions after class. doesnt go through tests with you and his midterm was a lot to finish in 50 min. If you get the final answer wrong the whole question is wrong. deducts marks on little things. did not pass his class because final is worth 60 percent, u failll the final u fail the class.
I think he's a great chem teacher! Assignments are very similar to his exams, gives you hints on what will be on the final (which always do show up), and provides many examples in class. Only bad thing is the final is worth 60%, but if you do well, you can finish the class with a very high mark. GPA booster, take Cheng if you can!
The 60% final which may sound over-the-top, but is actually a joke compared to the midterm. However, watch out for sig figs (I suggest carrying out your calculations a couple times just to make sure), because those are an easy way to lose marks really quickly. The way they grade your labs is a different story... Overall, good teacher!
Super funny guy. Lectures were very organized, I would suggest printing off his lectures notes and follow along. Attendance is mandatory because that is where you're given examples on how to do certain questions. There was 10 hand-in assignments that were fairly easy, 1 midterm and a final. The midterm and the final were marked extremely hard.
LOVE STEPHEN CHENG!!! He is honestly such a great prof and he tells THE BEST jokes!! Theres homework assignments every week but they are usually easy, boost your mark, and are very useful study tools for the midterm and final! Make sure you KNOW the material for tests because they are slightly difficult but if you know the material youll be fine
Don't waste your money buying the textbook. There are homework assignments but they aren't worth much. Print the handouts and add to these notes. Go to the lectures as he does examples which he doesn't post online. The midterm & final are very difficult but if you study hard for the final & practice the homework questions, you can get a good grade
i personally had a hard time hearing him, because of his accent and because of the mic. if it were a smaller class it'd be easier to understand what he's saying. but if you are hard of hearing, i suggest taking this class with a different professor or record his lectures to review again.
Dr. Cheng is the best person to take ochem with. Just be sure to make this class your priority and you'll be sure to do really well
Dr. Cheng made class enjoyable. The class was challenging and we had a low class average but I guess that's to be expected. You really have to work if you want to get an 80. The textbook is useless so don't buy it, just make sure you come to class and print out the handouts. He was really cute and always said 'winegar,' he's very nice!
Dr. Cheng is a hilarious prof, although he can difficult to understand at times. His way of teaching is respectable as he shows many examples and asks if we have any questions after each new topic is introduced. He is respected throughout the university and I would take another class taught by him.
Some of the concepts were hard, but he took time to explain things in a clear manner. There was lots of homework assignments, but they were easy mark boosters. The textbook was not needed, and he posts everything on the slides. Attending class is mandatory though, because he writes out examples on the board and stuff not included in the slides.
Loved having Stephen as a prof, he is very funny and knowledgeable about the content. Would recommend him to absolutely anyone!
You must attend lectures, take notes, and do assignments to succeed. He is hilarious and good at explaining but not much help over email. Examples in class are exactly like assigns, midterm, and final, but make sure you are prepared cause the final is worth 60%. Overall good, just make sure you put in the work and understand rather than memorize.
Cheng gives good lectures and his assignments are highly effective for preparing people for the tests. His tests are also very fair, and there are no surprises. Don't bother going to his office hours though, because he is a grouch in person even though he is really funny in class.
This class wasn't exactly a walkover but I liked it
Great prof. All midterm material is covered in class. He writes examples on the board that are not posted online so attendance is beneficial. Haven't used the textbook yet as all assignment and exam material is covered in class. The TA's mark the assignments extremely hard and unfair. If a question is worth 5 marks, you either get 5/5 or 0/5.
Make friends if you're planning to skip class, ask them for notes, because if you do skip class you won't pass. Something he is also good at? He traveled almost every part of the world that is related with chemistry and will brag about it later at class.
Stephen Cheng is a good guy and a good prof. His lectures aren't too heavy because he sometimes throws some dad jokes at you, or shows pictures of his vacations (that relate to chemistry).
Overall good prof. Is passionate about the material and seems to really enjoy teaching it. Short assignments are given once a week . He is well spoken and his lectures are very clear and well put together. Save yourself $200 and dont buy the textbook.
Can be hard to understand. Homework assignments due every week but do help for midterm and final. Print the lecture notes from UR Courses and bring them to lecture (it will help you follow along with what he is doing otherwise it seems he is pulling numbers from no where). Lab recitations also help to understand what is being taught in lecture.
I've had Dr. Cheng for two classes now, and he's a great professor. Organic Chemistry is a class that is known for how difficult it is, and he makes the class easier to understand, and he did lots of examples. However, his accent can be difficult to understand. He's super funny and cares about how his students do. Overall, he's great!
Dr. Cheng is one of the best at the U of R. He is probably the most organized profs that I have had, which makes lectures and examples easy to follow. He explains things very well and is always willing to help with questions. His assignments are extremely helpful and are based entirely from lectures only. His exams are also very easy if you study.
I know that a lot of people think he is a good prof, he is not. His teaching is just okay and I find that he wastes time with dumb references that are supposed to be funny. He does not like it when you ask questions and can be quite rude. And you will be using your textbook a lot.
Very clear in expectations for exams and he gives many examples in class for calculations. He has homework assignments due every week, but they are very helpful for staying on top of material and great study guides for exams. Would no recommend skipping his lectures as answers for examples done in class are not posted online.
Cheng was hands down the worst professor Ive ever had. The zoom lectures were brutal and hardly ever coordinated with the tophat questions and reading assignments. The time given for the midterms was never enough to finish... and if you asked questions he would say Ill answer it later and never did. He can be quite rude and all over the place..
I didn't mind this class, he was very straight forward in his lectures and homework. Very rarely did I find myself googling for clarification. He is a good prof but I strongly suggest being engaged during the lectures as he does go decently fast and covers lost of info that is crucial to your success in the class. Overall good prof.
Good professor, however can be a bit brief when covering complex topics. He is friendly and will respond to emails quickly. Midterms needed more time to finish.
I took Cheng's class in 2018, I thought he was the worst but after getting halfway through my chem degree, I realized that I judged him too harshly and there are WAY worse chem profs at this drab school. Out of all the one's I've had, he is one of the better ones. If you think he's a bad prof, you should stop taking any more science classes now.
Stephen Cheng is what I would like every professor to emulate. He explains things clearly, gives example problems, answers any and all questions and grades fairly. On top of that he is a lovely and caring human. 11/10, he is wonderful.
Despite the online version of this class having a crazy amount of "textbook" questions to answer (around 900) Cheng is a solid prof and does his job well. The work is fairly easy, there's just a lot of it!
Cheng is a good choice. He explains well and the pace of lectures was also good. You have to do quite a bit of reading and need to keep up with the material. His exams are a bit vague though if you don't understand the material well, but still a great choice.
Cheng is very to the point with all of his lectures, which helps understanding the content in the course. He answers questions very well, and his office hours are quite helpful. The Tophat reading assignments can get quite tedious and sometimes take 3-5 hours to finish (each), but help you learn the content well. You won't regret taking his course.
He relies way too much on top hat for his tests and assignments. It would be impossible to pass his tests solely based on the what he teaches in lecture. He can also be fairly rude when students ask questions. Midterms are on top hat and large calculation questions will only get you 1 point.
Not a good prof. Hard to read his writing sometimes, his tests are difficult, he never gives enough time and is unfair when it comes to grading (a long answer question that should be worth 5 pints is only worth 1). When students ask questions he can be quite rude, and if you do poorly on an exam all he will have to say is "next time study more".
The best prof that you can get for a chemistry class! Coming from someone that is very picky with professors, I truly enjoyed his class. His exams are so straightforward as long as you understand the overview of the reading assignment concepts. His lectures are organized, he can be hilarious at times, and he makes the exam expectations very clear.
Now, this prof is tough to describe. He is the best chem prof at the UofR but I did not enjoy his class. Way too much work. the workload made me do worse in other classes it was so bad for me (might just be me tho haha). he's somewhat difficult to understand but he is very knowledgeable. worst mark I've gotten in uni but also my worst subject.
Prof Cheng only taught the first few sections of the class but felt he tried to simplify the content as much as could. Liked his lecture notes provided, colour-coated so easier to see distinct details, and liked they way did examples in class. Nice man and good prof. Appreciated him teaching some of the content for us
Not a great prof. Not accessible outside of class. Not helpful. Will only see you as a statistic in his class. Doesn't care if you pass. Doesn't care if you understand the concepts. Extremely boring. Not at all helpful when it comes to exams. Seems like he doesn't like his job. Nothing against him personally, he's just meh.
It is difficult to understand this prof. It's evident he knows how to speak English. It's just that he mumbles quite a bit and doesn't articulate his words so sometimes the things he says is confusing. He can also be rude. He appears nice when he's giving a lecture until you go to talk to him. It's like a switch: he can be hostile for no reason.
Uses tophat and everything can be learnt there if you're not a fan of lectures. However, there are hundreds of questions that are due throughout the sem, albeit they're not particularly hard or worth much. The prof himself teaches pretty well and has great uploaded notes. He mumbles occasionally but aside from that, he's great for beginners
Dr. Cheng is a very good prof. He's quite funny and very helpful during his office hours. His tests are straight forward as long as you know what you're doing. The top hat and lab recitations sucked but helped so much to better understand the material. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches and overall a great prof!
Dr. Cheng is one of my favourite professors at this University. He is easily respected, and a very sweet man. Chemistry is an overall hard subject, but if you partake at all lectures you are most definitely guaranteed a pass.
He explains and does examples in class which were mostly okay to understand and the textbook also really helps alot to understand properly. He gave so many assignments so if you don't like assignments he's not the one for you. He also does negative marking in tests and exams so overall an okay experience.
His assignments are so tiring but did help for sure. He has a thick accent and sometimes, i get lost in class but after reviewing my note and his slides, it gets clear to me. Pls, attend his lectures and write notes. Read Tophat too. Gonna help you a lot.
He does assign a lot of homework but it helps prepare you for his exams. Exams are 20% short answer 80% MC and exactly like the practice questions. You do have to pay for TopHat but I only had to pay for the year and it carried over from CHEM 104. I liked him so much as a prof that I opted to take him again for CHEM105. 10/10 recommend! W prof!
Stephen is such a good professor. He explains everything very well and helps students grasp the concept. I would totally reccomend!
AMAZING!! Absolutely AMAZING!! 10/10 Deserves a raise in his salary. One of the only professor that ACTUALLY teaches
He was so into the material and always happy to be there. He made dad jokes about chemistry which were so bad they were funny. There is quite a bit of homework but all of it was helpful and graded surprisingly quickly. We were even given an outline for the final exam which was very helpful.
AMAZING! I have taken him for three classes now and he has been great in all of them. He explains things very well and does tons of practice problems that are very similar to his questions on the midterms. He does have A LOT of questions on top hat (between 40-90 questions on each assignment) but they are very helpful and resemble his tests.
Overall I would definitely recommend him for CHEM 140. The lectures are quite fast paced as there is a lot of material to go over, but he explains in good depth, so you will not be missing any information if you always attend. There is a paper assignment and an online assignment most weeks, and the exams were clearly layed out with no surprises.
Amazing prof!
Absolutely GOATED professor, tests are very fair and very similar to the assignments. Lectures are helpful but his thick accent may make it hard to understand at times. Be prepared for a lot of homework but other than that, if you put in the work you can do extremely well!
The best science prof at UofR hands down. Would take him a million times over again. He can explain things in such a great way to help you understand easier. If you get a chance to take a class with him do it
Dr. Cheng is a great prof. He does tons of examples and tests are straightforward, very similar to the assignments. He sometimes lacked explanation when going over the reactions, which is a large part of the course, but it's also just a tough class no matter what. Fair grading scheme. He is very kind and is helpful in office hours
Epitome of what you want in a proffessor. He is amazing across all criteria. Yes, you have homework and midterms, but its a university science class what do you expect? His grading is super fair, his test are a great reflection of the material taught, and he is super accesible and helpful outside of class. Only good words for him.
Dr. Cheng is a great professor. His class was assignment heavy, but I thought it was nice because the concepts were easier to grasp. The grading is clear in the assignments and midterms. I would recommend him to everyone. His lecture notes were easy to follow, and very helpful if you went to his office hours. He replied to emails in a good time!
Excellent professor who makes difficult concepts easy to grasp. Lots of homework but it really prepares you for the exams. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice questions.
Definitely knows his chemistry
Funny prof, likes what he does, but could be better when teaching
fun and easy as long as you come to class and write the example. HW assignments were on tests as well. nice class.
Really great prof
He is an excellent professor. He assigns weekly homework, which is very helpful for exam preparation, and his teaching is clear and well-organized. The midterm questions are very similar to the problems we work on in class and on the assignments.
Very strong lecturer who clearly knows his stuff. Exams are heavily multiple choice (2 marks per question and make up more than half the exam), so get comfortable with MC early. Staying on top of lectures is key, because falling behind makes the material confusing very quickly. Very kind, approachable prof overall.
