Professor Clarke is one of the best professors at NVCC. There are four essays and a midterm and final for 112. The midterm and final are so easy that it feels wrong to call them exams. He's a very understanding and lenient professor. Not a tough grader at all and I always looked forward to his lectures. VERY easy A and would 10/10 take him again
He rarely responds to emails or messages, sometimes he will even forget about scheduled meetings, his PowerPoint slides are like a philosophy class and not related to English at all. He also takes forever to grade stuff, midterm and final are fairly easy but I would rather not waste my time for ENG112.
What an awesome guy, his lectures are actually engaging. Easy out of class midterm, 4 essays with clear objectives and allows re-edits if you turn in early, he gives really great feedback on writing and I absolutely hate taking English but he made me a lot more confident in myself. If you do not like English but need the credit take this guy!!!
Easy A as long as you don't put the essay's off.
Professor Clarke is a decent professor. I found his lectures to be pretty boring but if you like listening to professors read off of a powerpoint the entire time, this class is for you. The final grade is based off of a few things including four essays which you can work on throughout the semester or push off until the last minute honestly.
He is really nice guy that gives generous deadline extensions and good feedback on assignments. An A in his class is really not out of reach for anyone in the class so long as you can follow the instructions for writing the essays. You can submit each essay as many times as you need to get an A on it. Certainly not your "traditional" English class.
Great Professor
Prof. Clarke produces quality writers -- end of story. He may seem nit-picky and overly scrutinizing at first, but it is because he wants you to understand the fundamentals of writing; he wants you to be a good writer. I used to dread and abhor English. However, after taking Prof. Clarke's class, I now love and embrace writing. Ask Q's and use OH.
If you are like me and you can't find any sort of enjoyment in analyzing a single photo for a 1,250+ word essay you wont have a great time. I can write on a college level, my academic career has proven this to me already, but I just can't be asked to write like I think I'm a poet. Not my cup of tea and the infinitely long ppts aren't a big help.
Don't procrastinate - turn drafts in early to get feedback & polish your writing. The class lectures are as much a philosophical approach to the art & skill of writing as they are prescriptive, which was more of a challenge for me. Slowing down thoughts to observe & classify was hard, but a skill that will apply to other areas of college and life.
Professor Clarke is an understanding professor. The grades were all based on these essays we had to write, which contained two stories within each essay and he had a very tedious drafting process we had to follow. My main issue was that he didn't grade a majority of my essays until the last days of the semester, which made it really stressful.
Great Professor had him for 111 and 112. Highly recommended him.
One thing to consider, attendance wasn't really mandatory, but heavily encouraged. He would give extra credit if attendance was low enough. Professor Clarke is a good lecturer, but he does tend to go through notes quickly so make sure to double check them on the class page. He is a fair grader and will allow extensions for essays w/ good feedback.
I took ENG111 and he is amazing take him and pay attention to class.
One of my favorite professors.
His classes were lecture-heavy & didn't apply to the criteria. He spent 90% of the class going over non-related material & story-telling. The remaining 10% was very confusing elaborate essay templates. Also, he lets students go on & on about unrelated anecdotes which was VERY annoying when you're taking a class to learn & pass, not share stories.
Professor. Clarke is one of the best professors at NOVA. I took him for English 111 and English 112. Gives great feedback, respectful and caring. He wants his students to succeed. I highly recommend to take his classes :)
Lecture is a bit like a philosophy class and story telling, however, was interesting to learn about. Had back surgery in the middle of the semester that caused me to miss class, Clarke was very understand and let me make up work! Very easy going prof and class, however, can be hard for those who aren't compatible with his teaching style
There is quite a bit of essays as assignments, but they're not hard and he will communicate exactly what you did well on or what you can correct. Participating in class helps you grasp the different concepts that he's talking about. He cares about his students and will do everything he can to make sure that they succeed.
This professor was amazing, I never do well in English classes but he had great lectures and the work was very clear. 4 essays and a midterm that were due at the end of the semester giving you a lot of time to work on them. He was very kind and was super easy to reach! Take him if you can.
i took him for ENG 111 at 2021. take him u wont regret.
Everything was super clear; due dates, grading criteria, etc. Gave us plenty of time to complete assignments, even accepted late work. Was helpful when answering questions, overall a really kind and caring teacher.
There is no word to describe about him. He is the best Prof. I ever take. He is very understanding. The way he teach will be inspire for student. He willing to help if you have any question. If you are reading this rate please do not hesitate to sign in to his class.
THE BEST ENGLISH PROFESSOR EVER I WILL TAKE HIS CLASS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Professor Clarke was a very understanding and level-headed teacher with a strong teaching approach. Clarke mainly taught me the writing process and his work was 4 5-page essays with examples. He is very flexible and open to students if they need help and deadlines. Overall, I had a positive experience, and would say that he is a fine professor.
Took points off even after following directions.
This teacher is great! He is very witty, entertaining, and caring. I learned a lot of new things about writing but also about life. He challenges students to ask "why" and "how" at everything. He also gives really good advice and feedback if asked of him; very responsive overall.
Professor Clarke is a very interesting teacher. He's very interactive and enjoys hearing the thoughts of his students. I highly recommend going to his office hours early in the semester if you don't understand what he's asking for in the essays. Overall, it was a fun class, and I made a bunch of new friends.
Honestly, one of the best professors you can take at Nova. I took him for Eng 111 and every class was enjoyable. His class is strictly essay-based, but don't fear as he is always open to helping students and gives great feedback.
I took Professor Clarke for both ENG 111 & 112. He's one of the best English professors I've taken. He elaborates/discusses the process of creating essays. His lecture slides illustrate the various methods/guides that can help you construct an essay (save them, they are very useful). Incredibly insightful, inspiring, and cooperative. 10/10 -MH
Prof. Clarke is a witty and fun teacher. His lectures were great. Grades are determined by a series of essays, but he is clear and helpful.
Professor Clarke is one of the few that that actually cares about his students. He isn't after finding out what grade a student deserves, but rather "how does one learn best." His lectures are more oriented towards literature aspects. A very, kind, understanding, and friendly professor.
Truly one of the best professors at Nova! I took him for Eng 111 and Eng 112. I really enjoyed Professor Clarke's teaching style. He's truly a kind and caring professor, so take him if you get the chance! His class is essay-based, but he provides a rubric and offers assistance for each essay.
If I could recommend his class to anyone that hates English I would, not only does he care about his students but he does so by connecting with them through his inspirational lectures. He's willing to help as a professor you just got to let him know. If you follow the rubric it's an easy A.
Prof. Clarke is a witty and engaging teacher. His class is essay-based, but he provides great feedback and is always willing to help. I used unstuck ai and ChatGPT for essay prep - definitely a game-changer!
Teacher wasn't bad BUT he doesn't respond to emails. I had multiple essays due during BREAK and I emailed for some guidance, but he does not respond AT ALL.
This professor is a bit disorganized, the lessons are a bit all over the place. I would maybe recommend this course for anyone who wants an easy A, but I would not recommend this course for anyone looking for a class that is heavily informative. It is a check-in-the-box class, nothing special. Take notes on vocab.
Professor Clarke's class was insightful and engaging. Any time I needed help all I needed to do was ask. As long as you get the essays done, in the analytical essay format, then there should be little problem with passing this class. He responded to emails, would stay after class, and always had office hours available for students who needed it.
great teacher please take him!!!!!!!
He was an amazing professor and I would highly recommend taking him for English 111 or 112.
Take him because he makes sure you pass the class and his lectures were the best part of my semester. Professor Clarke makes sure you're doing everything correctly and his personality was the best part!
Prof Clarke is great. Very respectful and caring. Lectures are fun and engaging. My only slight gripe is that he tends to assign essays mere days before they are due and takes quite a while to grade them. That said hes a very lax grader and will give you full points if you follow instructions. Overall a great Prof who I would recommend to everyone.
This is the best teacher I've had in the past 13 years of going to school. He is so laid back and so eager about his lessons and how he teaches is so cool in my opinion. All the questions, open ended conversations, and different perspectives he presents is amazing. Very easy grader and will help you to do your best
Attending his class is like therapy because he knows how to relate with people and he was absolutely amazing to hear stories from him!
One of the best professors I have ever taken a class from. We had 4 essays to do for the entire class. I really recommend this class if you are busy and want an easy A. Professor gives great feedbacks to your work and helps out a lot. He knows how to teach a class and how to keep the engagement through out even though attendance is not mandatory!
I took Professor Clarke's Honors English class, and it was really fun. My class was like a yapping session, and he brings different perspectives in his lessons. It was also light work. 4 essays along with 2 pastiches. I also really like the small class size because I don't like being in crowded classrooms haha!
I took him last Sem. Overall a pretty chill prof who is slightly lecture heavy, but as someone who enjoys class wide conversation it didn't bother me. However as some reviews have stated, he's pretty bad at responding to messages, if at all. However I cant complain much else. He's good prof and an easy A for people who need ENG credits.
Makes class not feel like class
Truly the GOAT. The lectures are heavy, but I love them and the anecdotes they provide. Though they might seem to veer off-topic sometimes, it's always about thinking critically and forming the right processes for writing. He really invites you to participate and has the most approachable, charismatic persona. So, once again, the GOAT. Take him!
He is undoubtedly the greatest English teacher I have ever had. He was always very respectful and loves hearing stories that you want to share. He is very lenient with the assignments, there are 4 total essays you have to do, just do them ASAP, and you'll be good. He gives great feedback on your essay drafts as well. I would highly recommend him.
