Excellent teacher; he knows a great deal about the topic he is teaching and even branches out to help expand your knowledge about English. His class completely changed my perspective on writing, and helped me develop a new style that I find helps me covey my opinion much better than ever before. You can't go wrong with this guy.

Prof. Clarke is GREAT! Essay writing is a much needed skill and he is more than willing to give it to ya. If you just do the essays (which the only 4 assignments for the entire semester) and the revisions (which are self-imposed) his class is something that will give you all the writing tools you'll ever need!
I loved this class, and prof. Clarke was great. He talks to us like he's our age, not like we're still in middle school. And he goes the extra mile to help out when something's confusing.
BEST ENGLISH PROFESSOR.Take this class. Prof Clarke is not only always trying his hardest to help his students, but he is nice and down to earth. His class is very far from boring. 4 essays, a few journals. On the essays don't wait till the last minute it helps. Best teacher ever, take his class, you will not regret it.Thank you Prof Clarke!!
Totally helpful! His class is not only about writing essays, but broadening your knowledge.
he is down to earth. he is funny and open minded. he was always there when i needed help in my essays. he will help every way possible on your four essays, either through email, before, or after class. if he sees u dat u r rly trying hard on ur essays and sees improvement, then u r gurannted an A! im definitly takin him for eng 112
Extremely nice teacher, will help any student who needs it. Would def recommend anyone to take his class.
EASY A!!!
Very nice & helpful. Lenient with essay due dates. Had open note final. Lots of notes. It was difficult having a 6:30 am class, but he's an awesome teacher & keeps you interested in the lectures. Write journals every class, discussion activities during class, & 4 essays for entire semester.
AWESOME TEACHER!! very understandable, very clear and HOTTTTTT. LOVE the class, u must take it
Clarke, is absolutely an awesome teacher not to mention extremely good looking and makes class thoroughly entertaining! He is the BEST
He is incredible. One of the most understanding and easy-going professors I've ever had. Loved every minute of his class and it really doesn't hurt that he is so easy on the eyes. TAKE HIM!
if you wanna take english, do not take it with anyone else but prof. clarke. he is absolutely the man. by far the easiest A. extremely helpful. its like he's getting paid more for doing what he does. the best prof in NOVA. By FAR THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!
Mr. Clarke was seriously THE BEST teacher I have EVER had!!!! 2nd only to Jean Warden at Alexandria - He was SO helpful and enjoyable. You could rewrite all papers, and he was really funny and enjoyable and I think I had a crush on him. :)
Mr. Clarke is THE BOMB!!! Totally my favorite Prof - EVER!! He barely beats out Jean Braden at Alexandria, but he does just barely. I think I had a crush on him - SUCH a great teacher!!! He lets you rewrite papers, he works WITH you, he wants to know what YOU think not try to mimic others - he really made Lit come alive for me!
Professor Clarke is absolutely awesome. He really wants you to develop your creativity not only to help your writing in his class but in the future. He is realistic, practical and very intuitive. He really knows what he is talking about and is willing EXTREMELY helpful! Absolutely wonderful teacher and I learned so much!
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! He is incredible and amazing. You should attend class regularly and revise the essays many times as much as you can to get better results. Although it is hard to take the 6:30 a.m. class, you would enjoy every minutes with him. I miss the class so much!!!
Mr. Clarke is a sincere, dedicated teacher with a sense of humor. His classes are structured without being restrictive and his generosity in time is amazing! He truly wants you to 'get it' and has the tools to assist you in the effort. Best class ever for me.
I love him! He is the best teacher ever. His level of thought is amazing! I learned writing techniques that I will use for the rest of my life.
Cool guy
Professor Clarke is amazing- it's definitely a class worth taking! I have a really hard time getting to class at 6:30am, but he doesn't mind if you walk in late as long as you show up. He is extremely helpful and spends a lot of time after class helping students with their papers. He really does care, and it doesn't hurt that he's hot!
BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!!!! I WILL REMEMBER EVERYTHING HE THOUGH ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE..HE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP, EVEN WHEN HE IS NO LONGER YOUR PROFESSOR! <3
I was terrified of English before attending his class, but Clarke is the BEST PROFESSOR you can get for ENG!! He is extremely generous of his time. Willing to work with you. He is a cool guy, not to mention his also hot/charming. = ) He has given me power to believe that no one is a bad writer. He helps you bring out the writer in you. Got an A.
Dr. Clarke is very nice and he is quite practical especially when applying his skills to English in general. The Midterm and his essays are difficult, but if you keep your notes, you will do fine.
He's the best professor I've had so far! Extremely helpful, he works with you and will give you credit as long as you are trying. He's always available for private meetings and really cares about his students. Super smart and funny, kind and understanding. Wish all profs were like him, I learned a lot from his class.
This is THE BEST TEACHER EVER!! Very willing to help! I took 111 and 112 with him and I don't regret it. The material is very clear and it really help me with other classes. DO take the class with him. I'm sure going to miss him and going to class at 6:30am!! In general Great Teacher and good looking! :)
Professor Clarke is an amazing teacher. I am currently taking his summer class, and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I suggest anyone that needs ENG 111 or 112, take it w/him. You wont regret it. I have learned SO MUCH. BY FAR the best teacher and will always remeber... WHY? HOW? Essays are hard, but rewarding. He is THE BEST !!!
He is an amazing professor. He dedicates so much time after class just helping students out with their essays. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. The Best professor!!! Take him you won?t regret it and it doesn?t hurt that he?s Hot!!!
Mr.Clarke is the best teacher ever! he was so helpful with everything that he taught.. im taking him for ENG 112. cant wait
He is the best professor!!! He knows what he has to teach and he knows what he has't to teach.i recommend him.
If you want to learn english the right way, take him. Hes funny most of the time, and hes always there if you need help. throughout the whole semester we wrote four essays. I think he should be a model though :)
You dont have to go to every class as long as you do all the assigned essays by the last week of the semester, but going to the class is def worth it. He knows what he talks about and you will never get bored. He is always available for extra help with the essays. Definitely take him!
Chillest professor I have ever taken in my life. Took him for 111 and 112. Just show effort and work hard on your 4 essays due at the end of the semester and you'll be fine.
His focus isn't only on developing writing skills but developing students' personality as well. I have never seen this in any of my previous professors. His class is a great experience which you would never forget.I did not take him for ENG 111 which I will regret always. He will introduce you to yourself. Definitely recommend him.
Amazing teacher!Don't hesitate to take him for English 112. You won't regret going to class even if it's a 8 AM class.
Textbooks are useless. He never used it. 1 Final & 1 Mid-term are open notes.(Easy) 4 essays You can make appointments with him after class or his office hours. He leads you how to write essays. He is the best Eng prof. at NVCC.
He was very educated, and he transferred his knowledge to students crystal clear. He is very nice, professional, polite, and well spoken. This is a must teacher to take for this class. He is the most wonderful teacher I've ever had, thank you for everything. I hope the best for him in life.
Greatest teacher ever. Will let you get away with murder, but if you respect yourself, you won't disappoint him or yourself. Really helped me improve my writing. Loves sidetracking the class. Big into Notorious B.I.G, loves to talk music. Gave me an A. 5 essays due by the end of the semester. Small journals given at the start of class each day.
I never opened the textbook once in his class, but the handouts have virtually all the information needed for all work. The concepts were a bit difficult to understand but he explained them in a way that made it possible to do.
AWESOME Teacher
He is laid back but don't think he'll let you walk all over him. Very knowledgeable and you cannot win an argument with him, plus he never loses his cool. He will totally Miyagi you. Anyway don't wait until the last minute to work on your essays. Meet with him in person for more guidance. He's patient and ridiculously good looking. Semi-easy A.
He's patient, kind and awesome!!!
Professor Clarke is an awesome guy. He's very clear on what he wants from your work and how he wants it done. He's funny and makes class interesting. It can go a little slow at times, but definitely recommend.
Mr. Clarke is one of the most helpful teachers I've ever had. He will provide you with as much help as you need and you're guaranteed to do well in his class if you try. The ultimate goal he has for his students is that they progress as writers. Show progression and attend regularly and you will do well.
Professor Clarke is the nicest guy he is helpful gives great ideas works with you. But he makes you do your work. He is not easy but he gives you time to do your work. He is an interesting teacher he is young and so he teaches only if you want to learn. But with him you can easily fail if you don't turne your essays in.
He's going to make you think very deeply about what you are writing. Although I thought it was going to be hard to please him after hearing his lectures, it's really not. If you take time to construct your essay, show effort, pay attention, and don't skip class, it's an easy A.
DO NOT PUT OFF HIS ESSAYS. He doesn't have many due dates or much homework that he actually grades, but if you put off the essays to last minute, you done... Aside from that, he is an awesome guy. Laid back, easy going, and helpful. Don't stress too much over his class, just get the help you need from him & you'll pass with an easy A.
Mr.Clarke is an amazing eng teacher. By the end of the semester i guarantee the quality of your essays will improve. He really makes you think and go in-depth about even the smallest of actions. His essay topics are very broad allowing you to choose your topic. As long as you think logically and have a structured essay ur good 2 go.
I learned a looooot from his class, not only English, but lessons of life, dont wanna talk about how sweeeet he is :) best teacher ever
SMART! The BEST English teacher ever, let alone a great mentor and a person very logical and knowledgeable! Will help you UN-learn incorrect/'bad' writing habits, and reteach you how to truly write and express yourself! Very helpful outside of class and good reference!
Talking with Mr. Clarke is like talking with a philosopher. He listens to everything you say and then comes up with great points that help you improve your essay. He makes you realize things that you never crossed your mind before. He taught me to write the right way and to use my point of view not others. He's the best English teacher ever. Genius
Whatever he puts on his syllabus regarding attendance is a scare tactic, so it is not mandatory. Class is easy, did not buy any textbook. He gives you handouts to use for the Mid term and Final. Easy only if you use the handouts. Essays are easy if you use his outline, if not you're probably screwed. Got an A...very very easy A.
good dude. let me turn stuff in late.
Just finished his 6 week summer class and I was very pleased! He definitely teaches you how to write an essay and as long as you do your part, it should be an easy A. He doesn't assign homework just 3 essays, mid-term and final. You DON'T need to buy a book for this class. Everything you need will be on the handouts especially for the tests.
He's the best teacher forever. He's very nice and helpful. Whenever you need help for your any English problem, he will give you a hand. With his class, you will be confident in writting. He's the most woderful English professor, Specially for students whose English 's the second languge. He treats his student with a warm heart.
Wat a goot man, Im da asian boi and he da goot boi...wat a goot men he is very curly but not a mean boi you know? I don't talk say wat and get the A goot but he teach goot
hes very talkative and wants everybody talk in his class. but hes sometimes irritating students. he is very strict and tough grader!
For the whole semester only 4 essays are due. I would say ok teacher
He's the best professor I've ever had. He's always willing to help. You can go to him for anything! I took him for 111 & knew I had to take him for 112. His classes fill up quick :) His lectures are really enlightening & you'll learn a lot about yourself as well as writing. I feel so much more confident as a writer now. Very understanding & nice.
hes very tough.too much writing(abuot 12 pages of research paper!!)hes very strict you cant submit your paper late at all. hes not helpful
Wonderful professor. Professional. Leaves his personal life out of the classroom unlike some professors who take out their feelings on students. Always more than willing to provide excellent criticism. Fair grader who maintains a rigorous curriculum, yet is very accommodating. Don't take Mr. Clarke if you are not willing to show up or put work in.
Professor Clarke is amazing! It's so much fun in his class, and he is pretty funny and an overall nice guy. Took him for 111 as well and love him! Asks a lot of questions to make you really think about what you are saying. Take Professor Clarke!
BY FAR THE BEST ENGLISH PROFESSOR EVER!!! Professor Clarke is a brilliant person who cares about his students as well as understands the pressures from other classes. He is very approachable when needing help for his class or other classes as well! He ask A LOT of QUESTIONS about your writing which allows you to grow as a young writer!!!
fairly easy professor, gives out four essays that are all due by the end of the semester. no Due dates but don't procrastinate on them till last minute, takes time to help you basically write your essay. great professor though.
I took him for Honors. No textbook, but 4 assigned readings (relaxed group discussion). He's an awesome teacher, top 3 at NOVA in my opinion. 4 essays, due last day of semester. Midterm+final. Enrichment activity+group pres for Honors. So great to know - Honors Chair. Will help with any essay for any class, any school. Wrote me a rec. letter too.
AMAZING professor. Took him for 111 as well. He's not just a teacher but a friend. Your writing will improve. He doesn't set due dates and procrastinates in his own life, so be careful to regulate yourself with essays lol. I think he is one of the best profs at NOVA hands down. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
He will make you think. Hated parts of the class but looking back he totally knew how to make your writing improve. The class was an easy A and well worth your time.
It is hard to adjust yourself with him. You have to write 4 essays; none has specified due dates, he gets them all at the end of semester So you'll find yourself writing 4 essays in the last week,if you don't plan a head. He talks a lot but teaches a little. all these good ratings are here because HE IS EASY GOING!
Amazing professor for eng 112!!! I would highly recommend him he's really nice and very helpful and he will also meet with you if you are having trouble with your essay!!
The nicest teacher ever! Treat his students with respect and very knowledgeable.
Took Eng 111 Honors, it seemed to more so be a critical thinking class. Essays kind of crept up on me at the end of the semester; the critical thinking kind of coincides with the writing. This class made me better & I am hella attracted to him hahah - but really take him. He's great
Mr. Clarke is one of the best professors at NOVA. He will help you with any problems you have with the essays. He helped me become a better writer. He is really nice and funny. I loved his class and we didn't really have homework in his class! Just 4 essays for the semester which is amazing compared to other classes that did more than 8. TAKE HIM!
He rocks.
He is just the best!
He seems to really care.
Hes awesome, only 4 essays to type for the year and the mid term is easier than a piece of cake. His lectures are the best and even though my class was at 8:00 in the morning and 3 hours long he made it 100% enjoyable. The enviroment is just exciting and he really cares about his students, be prepared to take notes though, they're very helpful!
As long as you put in the effort, you'll do well.
He is an amazing professor and someone I respect. He gently pushed me to keep writing outside his class and to have authority on my topic because I matter. What I say does matter and he helped me realized that.
Yeah, Prof. Clarke is the best. He's in my top 3 profs at NVCC Loudoun. Of those 3, he's my favorite. I go back to campus just to talk to him. He makes you think, and I can't ever read something without remembering something he said in class. Lol he really killed my instinct to generalize statements - now I'm really specific with arguments, etc.
Very witty and passionate about English. He never ends class early and the lectures usually don't seem that relevant to the subject, however the only homework due is four essays at the end of the semester, which he spends time talking about in the first few classes. If you have trouble paying attention during lectures, this class will be harder.
I took him for Literature eng 251. honestly i am really had at LIT and he made lecture very bearable. And if you read before and go to class you will really understand the material. The only negative thing I can say is he does assign long chapters to read within a week, i found it very unrealistic to keep up. But still able to pass with an A
prof. Clarke is a great professor. you only have to write 4 essays for the whole class which the deadline is the end of the semester. easy midterm and final. somewhat easy going. very helpful and passionate to help students. very caring about his students. take him, you won't regret it ;)
He is the most helpful professor, very caring and passionate. You won't regret taking his class. You will learn the real way of writing.
If you do not fall behind on the four essays in the class, you should be fine. The essays however are NOT easy to write and there is a strict process you need to figure out if you wish to do well. As a result, you will revise them MULTIPLE times if you wish to earn a decent grade. The only way I figured it out was visiting him on office hours.
I am a very tightly wound person. I am tense, sometimes terse, and never at rest. But in his class, I'm at ease. His lectures are thought provoking, and the material he lays out in them are things I've taken to heart and use every day. He is patient and sympathetic and wants his students to excel. I don't have the words to truly do him justice.
I couldn't have chosen a better professor to take English 111 with. He seriously cares about each student and will do everything he can to help you succeed. Something I liked was that he allows, and strongly encourages, use of first person speech in our essays. All four essays we wrote were based on personal experiences, which was awesome!
I had Mr. Clarke during the summer bridge program and fall and think he is a real funny and caring teacher, his lectures are interesting and his class isn't hard at all, the midterm was a 2 sided paper and open note, no scantron. Just remember to do the 4 essays when each of them are due and show up to class and you'll do great.
He is an excellent teacher. The essays are definitely not easy to write- they will take hours of revision and thinking. However, he is ALWAYS willing to help you with the process. You can tell that he loves his job and loves helping his students. A short conversation with him will leave you with a solid thesis to build your essay around.
Laid back teacher really cares about what hes talking about and enthusiastic. Its mostly lectures with occasional journals and you have 4 essays not long have till end of semester to do them and open book exam
Prof Clarke is absolutely amazing, he's a different english teacher that I wish I've always had. Only 4 essays the whole semester and they're all based on YOUR experiences. His lectures are very interesting and always makes you think.
Mr. Clarke is a real gem of a professor. Engaging, caring, generous, understanding & not tyrannical at all. Very challenging material as he is a critical thinker, you will have to make him understand your essays, so get ready to engage during his office hours. Lectures- pro: Inspiring! -con: could be more relevant which is why I took off a point
Prof. Clarke really knows what he is talking about and is very personable. The midterm and final were both take-home, open book and other than that he required only four essays with specific guidelines. My only complaint is that he basically let some of the louder students run the class instead of telling them to be quiet.
Love this professor! It's impossible to zone out while he's teaching! No need to worry about late work and his office hours are extremely helpful! He's hilarious and very caring. I would have taken him again but his classes filled up fast!!
By far the best English Professor I have ever had. Really a fantastic person- he makes the lectures interesting and thought-provoking. If you follow his rubric for essay writing (there are 4 essays) you will get an A. Super helpful and office hours, Professor Clarke is the bomb . com!!!
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. He's funny and his classes are enjoyable, but he also makes you think critically about the things you think you know. He's challenging in all the right ways. No real homework, just the four essays due at the end of the semester, but the process is a bit different so get started early.
Professor Clarke was an amazing laid back professor. He made participating in lectures really fun. He tries to make the class fun and educational, and he isn't too hard on grading.
One of my favorite professors at NOVA! He makes the class fun, interesting, and informative. I became not only a better writer, but a better thinker after taking two of his classes. He brings up current events and past issues to educate students on serious problems. I was a quiet student but still enjoyed the class very much. Take his class!!!!
Only exams at essays! However we never finish the power point because we get off track.
He is so accessible and helpful! We had a few papers, but he let you correct them and earn back the points. If everything is submitted by the end of course, you get full marks. He will help you write and write well in office hours if you simply go in and ask. What a wonderful guy! The only way you can fail (and people did!) is by simply not trying.
WARNING--This is NOT a regular English class. There is a HUGE emphasis on intricate depth of writing. If you write with "fluff", do not take this class. Prepare to put in ALOT of detail in your papers because he will fry yo if you don't. Other than that, he is an easygoing teacher who knows the subject pretty well. Do the papers! They're your grade
Professor Clarke is not only a high quality professor, but a great person. He's very accessible for help or for a chat. If you want lots of structure with easy writing assignments, I wouldn't take his class. His lectures and essays require lots of critical thinking and work. It's really rewarding, though, and you can get a lot out if you try.
he does a lecture everyday, sometimes its related to what we work on, sometimes it is not. Lectures were funny, papers are easy, just don't procrastinate
Professor Clarke is brilliant and his witty sense of humor keeps lecture interesting. He's very willing to offer his time for assistance and gives plenty of feedback on the papers for corrections. Attend class. Participate. Do the work assigned. You will pass with an A.
Easy going teacher, no homework, no textbooks.
Great professor! Enjoyed his class, learned a lot! Would recommend him!
He made us write 4 analytic essays with sources. For anyone who has written an analytic essay before, you know that it doesn't make sense to include sources. He did not give deadlines on any essay which sounds like a good thing, but it just ended up making people start their essays the last week of class. Overall wouldn't take him again.
Professor Clarke cares personally for each student, and truly wants to help you do well in class; he spells out exactly how to earn an A in his class. His lectures are SO interesting, and he teaches concepts clearly. I would absolutely take his class again 100 percent. He's a great, experienced teacher, who knows how to make class fun & engaging.
Professor Clarke is super amazing and caring. He's very accessible outside of class. I suggest going to see him at least once a week to check in with him if you have any questions about papers or your grade, he'll guide you in the right direction. Only thing I didn't like about his class were the essays, hard to follow a bit.
I learned a lot more about writing in this class than in almost every lit class I've taken so far combined. He wants all of his students to succeed. You will love his class if you stay caught up cause he won't chase after you to turn in your work.
Teaches great and helps you with the assignments. Not very clear on what is expected at first but after a while he explained and everything clicked.
I loved his lecture and he truly cared for his students. However his assignments (4 Analytical Essays) were very confusing to me especially trying to find sources for them. He takes a while to respond to emails &grade but hes always available during office hours. I wish went more because I probably wouldve understood the assignment more
Clarke is amazing. People who write bad reviews about him Clarke are either dumb or just don't care about class and expect you to give them an A for no reason. Take Clarke, he is the best teacher in NOVA!!!
Professor Clarke has to single-handedly be the best English teacher I've had in my academic career. Be wary though, as he will entirely re-teach you how to write an essay, but I promise it will help you out so much in the long run. Overall, his lectures are engaging and funny to boot. You can always find him available during office hours as well!
ABSOLUTELY, amazing. Makes you a better writer. Helps with papers.
I have taken Professor Clarke for ENG 111 and ENG 112, and he is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Grade is essentially 4 essays + midterm, and final ( both are open-book). Make sure to do your essays when they are due, even though you won't be penalized for turning them in late, you'll dig yourself into a deep, difficult to escape hole
took a 8 week 112 so class was 2:40 hours long but he was very talkative and encouraged discussion so it felt way shorter. everything was due at the end of semester so procrastinators be ware. hes a chill grader, as long as you hit the requirements and fallowed instructions your good. make sure to submit drafts even if their late. just do it.
For ENG111 he had four major essays, and a mid-term and final (both were easy and open note). He basically gives the entire semester to work on the essays, so unless you wait until the last week there's no reason why you wouldn't have them done. He's, fun, helpful, and his lectures can be really funny. I'm signing up for his ENG112 class. :D
Prof. Clarke, is a very caring professor towards his students who show him the effort in his class. Overall he gives great feedback on Essays. Keeps the conversation flowing and interesting in class. Hilarious, tried to connect with his students to know them better through their writing! Overall an awesome professor!
Prof. Clarke is a phenomenal professor. He really enjoys teaching and loves being able to help his students through the class if they are struggling. You are only graded on 2 exams and 4 essays, which are all very easy and all have a very easy to follow rubric to know how to get an easy A. Follow the process he gives and you will for sure get an A.
I took Prof Clarke for 111 and 112. He is really caring and hilarious. He loves to challenge his students and really makes you think. He does give out pop quizzes. Beware of journals! Make sure to number them! There are 2 exams (open book/note) and 4 major essays! Just make sure to ask him for help! He gives great feedback!
Professor Clarke is a great professor and his teaching method is really effective, he is patient and understanding. Professor Clarke gives good feedback on your essays and prepares you to be a better writer. If you just put in a lot of effort, show up to class, do your assignments then you will successfully pass the class.
Professor Clarke is great. I thought I was gonna fail the class, but ended with an A. As long as you so up and put in the effort into your essays, you're guaranteed an A. He gives back feedback on the essays and some extra credit opportunities.
I learned a lot from my class with professor Clarke. He stands as my favorite professor so far and I am fully intending on taking another of his classes. Passing his class isn't that difficult but you have to put in effort. If you wait till the last second to do assignments you're going to have a hard time. But his classes are worth the work.
Professor Clarke clearly cares about his students as people. That being said, his lectures can be confusing if you don't put in outside work to apply them to your writing. Towards the end of the semester, everything he had been talking about fell into place for me but I spent the first half of the semester confused about his expectations.
Professor Clarke is so loved by his students, and I can see why. He's kind and helpful. His lectures are funny but you don't really need to pay attention. Journals were easy and you had the whole semester to do them. 2 exams were even easier (open note, take home). Gave easy EC. Just do your 4 essays and he'll help you out every step of the way.
I think the entire 16 weeks we went over the same 55 slide power-point pf the same thing re-worded. Felt more like a philosophy class then anything. Learned nothing, huge waste of time. Passed but would not recommend.
I really like this professor. In ENG 112 there are 4 essays, a midterm, and a final exam. The 4 essays you have the whole semester to work on and he revises your drafts before you submit the final essay, so you're basically guaranteed an A if you listen to his advice. His classes are really engaging and funny, & challenging but not too challenging
Best professor in my opinion.
Professor Clarke is an absolute gem and I took him for both ENG 111 and 112. I absolutely loved each of his classes. He makes English seem a lot more fun and interesting. I miss his classes a lot. It is an easy A if you follow his instructions and guidelines. The best English professor out there honestly.
There are four papers in this class due at the end of the semester, with the first drafts being due periodically through the semester. He gives fantastic feedback so that you can constructively work on your papers. His lessons prep you for writing your paper by introducing the ideas behind how an analytical essay should be written.
Professor Clarke was awesome. He preaches about the 7 steps, and they seem unnecessary but are actually so helpful in the essay process. His lectures were long and sometimes off topic, but he gives some really good tips. Look over his handouts and you will be just fine.
I love professor Clarke! He's the GOAT! He gave excellent feedback on your essays, pointing out what needed to be fixed. He's not a tough grader, due dates are lenient and easy lectures! 10/10 would recommend him
You have 4 essays in ENG 112 and a midterm and some small additions here and there. He tries to do his job, but I feel like I haven't been able to progress my physical writing. Instead, I feel ENG 112 is a philosophy class and tries to encourage writers to write differently and not better. You can take him, just do the essays and try to learn.
In 111 he was great and the best teacher ever and that is why I took him again for 112. I would definitely take him for 111 but for 112 I have had the worst experience with him and I wouldn't take him again for 112. He never answers his emails unless you tell him that you emailed him during class and even then it's iffy. I love his lectures though.
Theres 4 essays and a midterm and final that are very easy to do. His lectures are amazing and really cares for his students. definitely take his class! hes very flexible with due dates and go to his office hours if you have any questions, they are very helpful!
He rarely responds to emails or messages, sometimes he will even forget about scheduled meetings, his PowerPoint slides are like a philosophy class and not related to English at all. He also takes forever to grade stuff, midterm and final are fairly easy but I would rather not waste my time for ENG112.
Professor Clarke is one of the best professors at NVCC. There are four essays and a midterm and final for 112. The midterm and final are so easy that it feels wrong to call them exams. He's a very understanding and lenient professor. Not a tough grader at all and I always looked forward to his lectures. VERY easy A and would 10/10 take him again
What an awesome guy, his lectures are actually engaging. Easy out of class midterm, 4 essays with clear objectives and allows re-edits if you turn in early, he gives really great feedback on writing and I absolutely hate taking English but he made me a lot more confident in myself. If you do not like English but need the credit take this guy!!!
Professor Clarke is a decent professor. I found his lectures to be pretty boring but if you like listening to professors read off of a powerpoint the entire time, this class is for you. The final grade is based off of a few things including four essays which you can work on throughout the semester or push off until the last minute honestly.
Easy A as long as you don't put the essay's off.
He is really nice guy that gives generous deadline extensions and good feedback on assignments. An A in his class is really not out of reach for anyone in the class so long as you can follow the instructions for writing the essays. You can submit each essay as many times as you need to get an A on it. Certainly not your "traditional" English class.
Prof. Clarke produces quality writers -- end of story. He may seem nit-picky and overly scrutinizing at first, but it is because he wants you to understand the fundamentals of writing; he wants you to be a good writer. I used to dread and abhor English. However, after taking Prof. Clarke's class, I now love and embrace writing. Ask Q's and use OH.
Great Professor
If you are like me and you can't find any sort of enjoyment in analyzing a single photo for a 1,250+ word essay you wont have a great time. I can write on a college level, my academic career has proven this to me already, but I just can't be asked to write like I think I'm a poet. Not my cup of tea and the infinitely long ppts aren't a big help.
Don't procrastinate - turn drafts in early to get feedback & polish your writing. The class lectures are as much a philosophical approach to the art & skill of writing as they are prescriptive, which was more of a challenge for me. Slowing down thoughts to observe & classify was hard, but a skill that will apply to other areas of college and life.
Professor Clarke is an understanding professor. The grades were all based on these essays we had to write, which contained two stories within each essay and he had a very tedious drafting process we had to follow. My main issue was that he didn't grade a majority of my essays until the last days of the semester, which made it really stressful.
Great Professor had him for 111 and 112. Highly recommended him.
One thing to consider, attendance wasn't really mandatory, but heavily encouraged. He would give extra credit if attendance was low enough. Professor Clarke is a good lecturer, but he does tend to go through notes quickly so make sure to double check them on the class page. He is a fair grader and will allow extensions for essays w/ good feedback.
I took ENG111 and he is amazing take him and pay attention to class.
One of my favorite professors.
His classes were lecture-heavy & didn't apply to the criteria. He spent 90% of the class going over non-related material & story-telling. The remaining 10% was very confusing elaborate essay templates. Also, he lets students go on & on about unrelated anecdotes which was VERY annoying when you're taking a class to learn & pass, not share stories.
Lecture is a bit like a philosophy class and story telling, however, was interesting to learn about. Had back surgery in the middle of the semester that caused me to miss class, Clarke was very understand and let me make up work! Very easy going prof and class, however, can be hard for those who aren't compatible with his teaching style
Professor. Clarke is one of the best professors at NOVA. I took him for English 111 and English 112. Gives great feedback, respectful and caring. He wants his students to succeed. I highly recommend to take his classes :)
There is quite a bit of essays as assignments, but they're not hard and he will communicate exactly what you did well on or what you can correct. Participating in class helps you grasp the different concepts that he's talking about. He cares about his students and will do everything he can to make sure that they succeed.
This professor was amazing, I never do well in English classes but he had great lectures and the work was very clear. 4 essays and a midterm that were due at the end of the semester giving you a lot of time to work on them. He was very kind and was super easy to reach! Take him if you can.
i took him for ENG 111 at 2021. take him u wont regret.
Everything was super clear; due dates, grading criteria, etc. Gave us plenty of time to complete assignments, even accepted late work. Was helpful when answering questions, overall a really kind and caring teacher.
There is no word to describe about him. He is the best Prof. I ever take. He is very understanding. The way he teach will be inspire for student. He willing to help if you have any question. If you are reading this rate please do not hesitate to sign in to his class.
THE BEST ENGLISH PROFESSOR EVER I WILL TAKE HIS CLASS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Professor Clarke was a very understanding and level-headed teacher with a strong teaching approach. Clarke mainly taught me the writing process and his work was 4 5-page essays with examples. He is very flexible and open to students if they need help and deadlines. Overall, I had a positive experience, and would say that he is a fine professor.
This teacher is great! He is very witty, entertaining, and caring. I learned a lot of new things about writing but also about life. He challenges students to ask "why" and "how" at everything. He also gives really good advice and feedback if asked of him; very responsive overall.
Took points off even after following directions.
Professor Clarke is a very interesting teacher. He's very interactive and enjoys hearing the thoughts of his students. I highly recommend going to his office hours early in the semester if you don't understand what he's asking for in the essays. Overall, it was a fun class, and I made a bunch of new friends.
Honestly, one of the best professors you can take at Nova. I took him for Eng 111 and every class was enjoyable. His class is strictly essay-based, but don't fear as he is always open to helping students and gives great feedback.
I took Professor Clarke for both ENG 111 & 112. He's one of the best English professors I've taken. He elaborates/discusses the process of creating essays. His lecture slides illustrate the various methods/guides that can help you construct an essay (save them, they are very useful). Incredibly insightful, inspiring, and cooperative. 10/10 -MH
Prof. Clarke is a witty and fun teacher. His lectures were great. Grades are determined by a series of essays, but he is clear and helpful.
Professor Clarke is one of the few that that actually cares about his students. He isn't after finding out what grade a student deserves, but rather "how does one learn best." His lectures are more oriented towards literature aspects. A very, kind, understanding, and friendly professor.
Truly one of the best professors at Nova! I took him for Eng 111 and Eng 112. I really enjoyed Professor Clarke's teaching style. He's truly a kind and caring professor, so take him if you get the chance! His class is essay-based, but he provides a rubric and offers assistance for each essay.
If I could recommend his class to anyone that hates English I would, not only does he care about his students but he does so by connecting with them through his inspirational lectures. He's willing to help as a professor you just got to let him know. If you follow the rubric it's an easy A.
Prof. Clarke is a witty and engaging teacher. His class is essay-based, but he provides great feedback and is always willing to help. I used unstuck ai and ChatGPT for essay prep - definitely a game-changer!
Teacher wasn't bad BUT he doesn't respond to emails. I had multiple essays due during BREAK and I emailed for some guidance, but he does not respond AT ALL.
This professor is a bit disorganized, the lessons are a bit all over the place. I would maybe recommend this course for anyone who wants an easy A, but I would not recommend this course for anyone looking for a class that is heavily informative. It is a check-in-the-box class, nothing special. Take notes on vocab.
Professor Clarke's class was insightful and engaging. Any time I needed help all I needed to do was ask. As long as you get the essays done, in the analytical essay format, then there should be little problem with passing this class. He responded to emails, would stay after class, and always had office hours available for students who needed it.
great teacher please take him!!!!!!!
He was an amazing professor and I would highly recommend taking him for English 111 or 112.
Take him because he makes sure you pass the class and his lectures were the best part of my semester. Professor Clarke makes sure you're doing everything correctly and his personality was the best part!
Prof Clarke is great. Very respectful and caring. Lectures are fun and engaging. My only slight gripe is that he tends to assign essays mere days before they are due and takes quite a while to grade them. That said hes a very lax grader and will give you full points if you follow instructions. Overall a great Prof who I would recommend to everyone.
This is the best teacher I've had in the past 13 years of going to school. He is so laid back and so eager about his lessons and how he teaches is so cool in my opinion. All the questions, open ended conversations, and different perspectives he presents is amazing. Very easy grader and will help you to do your best
Attending his class is like therapy because he knows how to relate with people and he was absolutely amazing to hear stories from him!
One of the best professors I have ever taken a class from. We had 4 essays to do for the entire class. I really recommend this class if you are busy and want an easy A. Professor gives great feedbacks to your work and helps out a lot. He knows how to teach a class and how to keep the engagement through out even though attendance is not mandatory!
I took Professor Clarke's Honors English class, and it was really fun. My class was like a yapping session, and he brings different perspectives in his lessons. It was also light work. 4 essays along with 2 pastiches. I also really like the small class size because I don't like being in crowded classrooms haha!
I took him last Sem. Overall a pretty chill prof who is slightly lecture heavy, but as someone who enjoys class wide conversation it didn't bother me. However as some reviews have stated, he's pretty bad at responding to messages, if at all. However I cant complain much else. He's good prof and an easy A for people who need ENG credits.
Makes class not feel like class
Truly the GOAT. The lectures are heavy, but I love them and the anecdotes they provide. Though they might seem to veer off-topic sometimes, it's always about thinking critically and forming the right processes for writing. He really invites you to participate and has the most approachable, charismatic persona. So, once again, the GOAT. Take him!
He is undoubtedly the greatest English teacher I have ever had. He was always very respectful and loves hearing stories that you want to share. He is very lenient with the assignments, there are 4 total essays you have to do, just do them ASAP, and you'll be good. He gives great feedback on your essay drafts as well. I would highly recommend him.
