DO NOT take this teacher! Had online class & he expects you to live & breathe the material. Book sucks too-no formula examples given. He said exams are hard to weed out those that just find answers in book.Hmwrk nothing like the exam material. Multi. choice 30 questions 65 mins & short answer 4 25 mins. Does grade on a curve though.
Dr. Cotten is always available to answer question before and after class. His test are hard so you really must attend class and take notes. You have to study in this class and do not get behind.
I took this class online. It requires a lot of studying and reading. The tests are pretty hard, but he grades on a curve. There are 8 multiple choice homework assignments which help prepare you for the types of questions on the exams.
Class is test oriented. 3 tests worth 33.3% each, with up 9 hw assignments each worth +1 pt to your final grade. Good powerpoint slides that are easy to read, just cram for tests and thats that. Doesnt baby students or assign any homework
His tests are hard but gives extra credit assignments to help with grades.
Took money banking with him, he is not a great teacher but not that bad too. I have seen worse. you really have to attend the class. he does not use the book but u will because some stuff that he brings in the test that he did not mention in the class. tests are very hard, gives a curve and 9 hw assignemtn extra points.he gives activities in class
Read the book. attend class. and review his test study guides and you will be good in his class. He knows what he is talking about but that doesn't mean the students know. I would say the book is required as the tests do cover whats in the book. Attendance is required b/c he tests over the things he mentions in class.
Ease of class depends on your interest, but no one should get less than a C, ever! Easy to understand, and test straight forward from slides and lectures. He empahsizes points thatwill definately be tested on. Extremely knowlegeble with a real interest in his subject.
Excellent professor, invested in making sure students learn. Read the entire syllabus, it's long but his sense of humor really comes through. I would definitely take classes with him again.
He does grade on a curve depending on the total class scores. His Final was extremely hard but I believe I did enough to make a B so while I'm not satisfied it will suffice. Make sure to review his PowerPoint slides!
He overloads the material immensely. He talks over everyone's head & expects way too much. He should teach graduate level only. Textbook is a must, homework is a must, attendance is a must. Do not recommend taking this your first semester
Insightful professor. Yes, he does teach at a graduate level, but if you read the chapter prior to class, do the homework and participate; you'll do fine. He grades on a weighted level. NO EXTRA ANYTHING!
Essentially taking it online was for some reason more difficult. Sure you get access to the textbook but it doesn't really help much. I didn't get the chance to go to his reviews because of my schedule, but I heard they helped a lot of students. The review sessions were a random times, normally during evening, but the TA's really good.
Took him for Money and Banking this past semester, got a C. Great economist and gives good real life examples relating to material. My advice to anyone interested in taking his course:1.STUDY YOUR BUNS OFF! 2.NEVER SKIP CLASS! 3.READ THE SYLLABUS! do the for mentioned and put on your big boy pants and you'll be fine
i worked my ass off for my A in this class and was elated to earn it. do not skip any of his classes, and whatever you do, don't fall behind in the readings. the lectures are very interesting for such dry material.
Professor Cotten is very clear from the beginning. His syllabus is a little intimidating but you can tell he won't settle for anything less than responsible college students. He will blast you if you send him useless emails, but the class itself was pretty easy. Some questions on tests were confusing but other than that, it's cake.
Dr. Cotten is a pretty chill guy. He tried to make you feel comfortable with him instead of nervous. (Online) the only assignments there were: 1. homework (once a week except for test weeks) and 2: the tests themselves. The hw is basically 34ths in the textbook and 14 in the powerpoints he puts up. Communicate with him!
Professor Cotten is one of the best instructors at UHCL. His classes are clear and he covers the material well. If you attend his lectures, do the homework, and attend the optional review sessions you will pass his testsclass.
Most straight forward professor I have taken in my entire college career-take him online or in person, his expectations are clear. I took him online, but after attending his face to face review sessions, I wish I took him in person, as he is helpful and passionate about the subject. Great professor overall. But must do your part (read and study).
Exams require critical thinking . There is no powerpoint. Concepts discussed in class may not necessarily be on exams. Grading system is 3 exams(30pts per test), 1 page paper(10pts) and homework(5 pts). Homework is the "extra credit". He's short, concise and really knows his stuff. Ask questions, he's very approachable.
This class was hard for me but as long as you attend class and do the optional homework you can pass with an A. Dr. Cotten is a good professor and will help you out if you're confused, you just have to ask. Uses homework as extra credit. Tests aren't bad if you know the material, reviews aren't that helpful though.
OMG!!! This class sucked so bad, it's not the professor it's just the material. I never did anything for this class until one or two day's before the exam just because I hated the material so much. I still passed because I did okay on the exams, he gave little curves, and his grading scale is VERY different than most professors, in your favor.
Took this online this summer, I wish I would have taken it during a regular face to face semester, because I enjoyed it. READ the power points, READ the notes given before exams, understand them and you will be fine. Scored a 50 on 1st test, 106 on the 2nd, 8o something on final. Boom headshot! Homework was all extra credit. Good professor.
Three exams, hw is extra credit. Gives a generous curve and provides exam review.
Mr. Cotten gives good class notes. Read the notes and power point presentations before class and you will be ready to understand his class. He gives good real life examples. He gives you homework for each class but all are extra-credit. Only 3 tests. I took it online but he allowed online students to take face to face class. He is very helpful.
I had to take this class and Professor Cotten was very helpful when it came to questions and feedback. He gives you three different times to take the exams during the week of the exams. Pay attention to each lecture, they're very helpful and he gives a breakdown of the chapters. He gives a lot of extra sources of information to help with studying.
Took this online, never bought the book. All i studied was the Homework questions, and the power-points. The tests feel a lot harder than they are, and he normally gives a curve. He seem like a funny guy, every time I went to take a test he would crack a few jokes. He has an online review session before each test so you to ask questions.
The course was very difficult and boring, but I don't think it was the professor's fault. He did try to get us motivated, but Money and Banking is just a drag.
I took this course online. It wasn't bad, my biggest gripe about him is accessibility. He takes forever to email back. Do the work and you will be fine. Weekly readings, lectures(cover stuff not in the book), quizzes, and 3 tests(99% of grade). He does offer extra credit however!
At first I was a little intimidated taking this class since my English is not perfect and this class has some vocab. Prof. Cotten makes it easy for the students to understand with his awesome lectures. I just did my final today too in this class and he had bonus questions on the final too. He is very helpful and KNOWS how to teach. Take him people!
Professor Cotton lectures are great and very informative. Make sure you ask a lot of question in classes if your ever confused on any of the sections. He's always helpful. The first couple weeks felt a little overwhelming, but the sections got better through out the chapters. Homework is very important in this course it will help you out a lot.
Do NOT take this class if you are not good at taking tests. This class is made up of only 3 Exams!!! He does not make you buy a book and does not take attendance. This is the first class I have ever had to drop. Lectures are so tough to pay attention to and I am not in favor of how teaches, it just does not make me learn anything.
The class consists of 3 tests that make up your entire grade for the semester. You can get 5% extra credit on your overall grade if you do the HW assignments and an additional 2% for 2 SONA studies. There are no videos only powerpoints, so it is best to read the book. He curved every test. Overall, it was a self teach class like most online classes
Class is only 3 tests but you can get 5 points extra credit to your final grade by doing the homework assignments and 2 points extra credit by doing SONA studies. Textbook was not required but is good for extra reading. Just attend the lectures and read his powerpoints and you'll pass the class. Each test is curved.
There are only three tests that are worth 33.33% each. You can get 5% bonus by doing the homework--they do help out, so I recommend you take advantage of the bonuses if tests aren't your thing. Coming to lecture is important if you read the assigned chapters and they don't make sense. He does his best to help you understand, so ask questions!
Took online during the summer and dropped. After the first week, I found that the hmwrk assignments have little to do with the lectures. Seemed like this class is just a rehash of microECON rather than Energy Economics - very disappointed in the money I wasted. Interested in the class, but had no way to connect the material to the hmwrk. GoodLk.
This guy does not care about his students. Did his online summer course and he was not available to us. He even missed a review session then lies he put the wrong time. Also he takes 10 points off your average and gives you that as your grade.
I have taken many many online classes, and he has been the absolute worst professor. Has not spoken to us whatsoever about the course. No clear direction. Doesn't respond to ANY emails. Doesn't post tests when they are suppose to be posted. His powerpoint are over 100 slides/week. Tests are HARD with no review or clarification of material. AWFUL!!
Took for money and Banking. Lectures hold your attention. gives extra credit and generous curves. The tests are hard. I bought the book and haven't touched it all semester. As long as you are not lazy you will do well.
Honestly, worst professor I've ever taken. He explains literally little to nothing in class and I expects you to understand everything else by yourself. His tests are no way near what he explains in class . He tells you to just study the HW (A LOT OF HW) and you will make a good grade on the test. NOT TRUE!!! They're completely different. Horrible.
Prof Cotten has a humor that might offend some, but he is clear with what to expect from this class. If taken online, be prepared to teach yourself. Tests (F2F or proctored for $) are hard, blackboard assignments are all extra credit so not mandatory-but I suggest doing them. He has online review sessions for each test. Text book is a plus to have.
Very fair. If you do the work... you will be fine. Weekly quizzes and 3 tests throughout the semester.
You have to be at class, test questions are off the lecture AND homework. Not an easy class but he lectures great and grades fair. If you are looking for an easy A, not ur class. You will learn a lot from him. I would def take him again!!! Be prepared to spend 6+ hours doing homework... its a must to pass!!! PUBLIC ECONOMICS
There's graded homework every week, three tests, extra credit, and makes himself available for review sessions before every test. He also records the online review sessions so if you cant make it to either. Hes very clear about what he wants you to know. Need to read chapters. Great prof.
He is very fair. Weekly homework, three tests and extra credit option available. If you do the work you will be fine.
Professor Cotten is my favourite Professor at UHCL. He is very down to earth and hilarious. When he talks about concepts he make it very interesting and keeps you involved, even at 7pm. He provides his expectations very clearly at the beginning of the semester. He legitimately cares about his students and really wants them to succeed.
This class was made way harder than it needed to be. 3 Tests, 2 Papers, 12 Online HW's (10 questions each & you have to write a paragraph for each question, no multiple choice. Took hours), 12 Preview quizzes due same day as class. If that doesn't scare you away. No powerpoints are provided. All you have is the book (with long chapters). Gl
I took the online course. He has strict rules like ask for extra credit you get a zero for the class. Ask dumb questions you get a zero. He doesn't offer extra credit. Gives reviews, but if he says math then it's over the reading on exams and vice versa. Exams are a major part of your grade. Assignments weekly and are easy.
Exams are hard and are 100 questions. This is majority of your grade. He did reviews but the meeting times were often changed and the recorded videos help to an extent. He has no concerns if you pass. He told students they should drop because they will fail. The only extra credit he gave was on the final exam. Study hard to pass this class.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken. But that being said I would take him again. If your final exam grade is higher than what your weighted letter grade will be, he gives you the grade you received on the final exam. eg if your average would be a 80 and you got a 90 on the final, you would get a 90 for the course
This professor is teaching his students as we know extactly what the content he is explaining is. Homework is easyish. You will need to read the textbook and follow the lecture because you can be confused very quickly if you dont follow and study the textbook. You dont have to show up you but you WILL need to follow his luctured with the textbook
Don't take him if you have a choice. For online classes, the only time to take an online exam is on Saturdays. He takes points off your final grade for emailing him about extra credit, about taking an exam at a different time etc. I've never been so scared for my grade that I didn't email my professor a question.
10 hws, 3 exams, and 1 final. The exams do not reflect the powerpoints. Prof gave us the wrong test (he gave us an old test) and made us retake the test. This is troubling b/c he only opens the test for one Saturday. Unorganized & constantly having to send emails to correct himself. Final 50% of your grade. Deducts points for asking questions.
So he does take points off for emailing him. If you take him online you can ask question in his online reviews. So far he has 3 tests that take a total of 30% of your grade then 20% is quizzes that are easy. The tests are open book open note except the final which is 50% and if you pass the test you pass the class. Fail the final fail the course.
Absolutely ridiculous. 3 open book exams that are 10% each. 10 homework quizzes that are about 2.5% each. The final is 50% of your grade and is closed book. He made us retake the first test because he gave us the incorrect one first. He takes points off of your TOTAL grade if you ask dumb questions. TAKE ANYBODY ELSE!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!
I am taking this class. About to take the final. Anybody knows if the final is hard, mostly theory or math?
I had him for Principles of Microeconomics and he was pretty nice. He was cool in class and answered questions if you asked. He gives a lot of reading and there is homework every week, but it's not impossible. I liked the class and he was partially why. I'd take more classes from him.
he is no help ,I have read every chapter and powerpoint and most of the exams are completely different then the review. just run. he literally expects you to fail stating average grade is around 55
Terrible teaching style & lousy lecture notes. Too much to read, assigned chaps dont help with solving the HWs. Didnt like how he worded his questions/answer choices (also gave us faulty problems). Absurd that the final is worth 50%. Barely learned or retained anything
Study the homework and practice exams and you will pass the class. There are quizzes due each week and 4 exams. Read over the chapters, do the weekly quizzes (HW), use them to study for the exams. People failed because of pure laziness when it comes to studying. This class is an easy A.
Worst professor ever. If you have the opportunity to avoid him, please do. Has two exams and homework and quizzes on Cengage. If you don't make a 55 average between the two exams, you fail. His syllabus was the most agressive thing I have ever read and he literally lists like 7 things that he will deduct points and letter grades for.
I could have gotten an easy A but I didn't prepare correctly for the first exam. He has online lecture vids that are a little more clear. Homework is extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory BUT he will randomly do extra credit some days for exams. He loves to answer questions so ASK! You're will need to study but it's not hard! Read! Watch videos!
He will drop you a letter grade if you ask for extra credit, and will take points off your final grade for multiple other things. You have to get above a 55 on exams to pass, even if your weighted grade is sufficient.
So look. Half way into the semester my life was falling apart at the seams. It got to the point that I couldn't even make it to class (btw his lectures are online too). ALL YOU NEED FOR THIS CLASS IS A 55 TEST AVERAGE TO PASS. Let me repeat myself...a 55 average. I made a C+ because I straight up didn't deserve a higher grade.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. He is so mean and not helpful at all. his syllabus is super aggressive and he will take off points for literally anything. His exams are nothing like his reviews or homework. He thinks he is a pro at economics and expects everyone else to be.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He pretends that he cares but in fact, he does not. He does not give any curve and he does not teach you anything. You just have to self teach yourself through Cengage. Super hard homework problems. Test is 75% of your whole grade. He had a review session but it was not useful at all. His test questions are confusing.
Instructor offers multiple resources for online students. Such as recorded power points for lectures, and exams are closely by the book. Hes extremely funny and seems to care about his students.
He is a wonderful professor. The class is hard yes, but if you reach out he is more than happy to help. I learned so much from him . If you take the time to study and follow his instructions, you'll be fine. He is very straight forward in his syllabus about what he expects and I love a teacher like that. Would recommend.
Absolutely chill and nice professor. He lets you choose whether you want to take the class fully online or F2F. 3 exams in-person and weekly Mindtap homework/quizzes. He is hilarious and open to questions. I was scared to take the class because of the negative reviews, but don't listen to those! He's amazing and passionate about microeconomics.
The class material requires time to understand it. Even though he had lectures put up-- it was always hard to understand what he wrote on them due to bad handwriting. 1/3 of the grade is based on HW and Quizzes. 2/3 based on exams. He had exam review sessions a couple of days before each exam-- they weren't as helpful as I has hoped for
I have had classes HARDEST than this one and still could not pass this one. Worst Professor ever, tons of homework. Now I can totally say that in my 3 years of college, I have never had a class so HARD with 0 help. Took it as online and tons of assignments in cenage, literally CENAGE is your professor. Everyone was so scared to email him. DONT TAKE
This class is VERY cengage heavy with a lot of assignments due at the end of each week. Reviews don't help with tests. Lectures are pretty useless as he often goes so off-topic that it's hard to remember where on the topic we left off on. Honestly, if you can try to take someone else unless you plan on teaching yourself the material. Good luck!
WORST professor ever!! DO NOT TAKE HIM !! very unorganized, no study guide AT ALL!!, does not curve exams, lecture was very hard to grasp!
This class had way more homework than I was expecting. The week before finals we had 17 assignments due. His class is cengage only with tons of assignments. Some can be difficult to understand others are easy. His recorded lectures are dry and boring. I would not take him again.
Awesome professor, will take the time to walk you through the material 1on1 - Choice for exam 3 or cumulative final, drops lowest exam score, rounds up total grade (67.3 to 68), and allows in person testing for online students. Extra credit is enough to cover 2 weeks of missed assignments, easy quizzes/hw every week (everything is on quizlet/chegg)
Couldn't recommend higher. I'm not sure how to make sense of the bad reviews. Several mention Cengage being used a lot and that's true but I don't see how that's an issue inherently, homework and comprehension material have to come from somewhere. Anyway the lectures are great, the material is well thought-out and the class is very fair and relaxed.
Weekly HW, with algebra type questions you'll need to understand. Mid-term and Final, timed, via ProctorU, both are difficult, because he expects you to work things out. Needed to spend extra time each week just to pass. Lectures and book were not enough to do well, mostly because he lectures at his level and doesn't tech down to undergraduate.
Have no idea what I paid tuition for when textbook and homework were both independent purchases away from school platform.
it seemed like a lot of people struggled in this class including me..
You might see the reviews here and have doubts about him, but he is an excellent teacher! His tests might be a bit tough, but you will still get 70/100 if you diligently do his homework. The night before the exam, he took the time to explain to us anything we were still confused about at 8PM! So nice!
He is so good!!!!
This course is hard to understand, but I mean the lectures, not him. He is so good and easy. I think it's easy to pass 👍🏻
Economics is a hard subject, but class is straight forward. You will have to put in the work to understand the assignments and exams. Curve is generous, and lectures are easy to understand. Only gripe about this professor were the extra credit rules that made communication hard.
This class requires lots of work, definitely not easy. Long weekly lectures, weekly homeworks (30%), and 2 open book exams (each worth 10%). Takes a lot of studying for the proctored final (50% of class grade). I'd say take this class by itself in the summer if you want to take it. I did well in other economics courses but struggled with this one.
