he is awesome
hard, clear, compassionate

Very clear, tests are straight forward, good lecturer!
good lecturer
best lecturer on campus
he is so fabulous.....love all the online stuff he does
Great Teacher!
Hard, but he wants you to do well if you're trying.
VERY late marker. You may forget that you wrote an exam before it's returned.
insanely hard marker
there are winners & there are losers . he's easily the best lecturer at MUC.
incredibly demanding, not as funny as he thinks he is
Take good notes and do the readings and you'll do well in his class
Quick and to the pt Lectures, luv them short classes. Fair Marker. Will help if you dare ask. Soft Spoken.
rather anal
Makes interesting and clear lectures. A very good marker provided you do all your reading and put some effort into it. I really liked this professor, he's one of my fav's. Classes tend to end earlier than usual too. :)
May as well take correspondence.
Good guy and I like his class. The final was the worst I ever wrote and it was open book!
Ouch. My transcript is still hurting! Says one thing and marks for another. Students be warned! Although he does let us out early, try to lecture a little more and show videos less.
hes a good teacher
Pretty nice, but hard tests. A lot of people failed the midterm, even people who usually do well, his expectations were unclear
Knowledgeable, professional, fair, available for help, easy going. He has high expectations but gives you the necessary tools to succeed. He demands more in open book tests so you need to know the required readings, attend lectures, and take good notes.
tests were very hard, misses alot of material in the text and expects you to know it on the test.
Wow, I learned a lot about the time period and the attitudes that ruled American domestic and foreign policy but Stephen seemed to mark with a mean streak. His criticism was not as constructive as it could be and a little demeaning. I’m not asking for an easier class but some sensitivity in the remarks might enhance the learning process.
Wow! this guy is AWESOME! I thought all of history class are boring and good way to cure insomnia. His class is very interesting, his jokes are intellectual, charming and funny. He knows his subject very well. his office hours are very helpful. Thanks stephen! those office hours are really helpful, when I'm doing my research paper!
This teacher facilitates good discussion about his various history subjects. This helped to make the class interactive and exciting to be a part of. His emphasis on using primary sources, instead of just spewing back well-known information made the essay somewhat interesting to write. Good teacher.
Davies classes are always interesting and informative. be prepared to take good notes and you will do fine in this class. he is really knowledgeable and wants to see everyone succeed. definitely a good teacher
Stephen is a great professor. I actually took two classes with him this semester and found him to be super informative. He's really interesting and makes great jokes. Make sure you show up for class and listen hard. Also, for 101 especially make sure you give yourself plenty of time for the term paper... it's more work than you'd think!
when someone talks at the same tone for 3 hours u almost wanna shoot urself in the head...didnt go after 4 weeks cuz it was that painfu;l
Ver sloppy instructor. He takes months to get papers back and then misplaced some. When contacted to remedy his error, he just ignored me until I contacted the Dean. Very boring, monotone voice. Hard to listen to for any length of time. He loves class discussions which I find a waste of time.I did not pay $350 to listen to kids talk.
brutal marker, doesnt get back with emails, completely unfair. So dry and you just sit there for hours listening to blah blah blah. I do not recomend this class!!! Makes history Boring. If you want to get a degree in history this man will ruin it for you!! No offense. Thanks for making me change my degree choice!! You did one thing for me!
ONE WORD: BRUTAL. hard marker.
hard but fair. Listen in class and take notes. very clear about what he expects on essays and gives the most helpful comments back. Only drawback is he does take a long time to return papers and exams.
Fair teacher, thorough marker. Make sure you follow guidelines and there will be no problem.
Dr. Davies is great. Good lecturer, and always asks for any "Questions or Comments?" twice or more during any given lecture to make sure people can get what they need out of the lecture.
Lecture was a little boring, he has a very dry voice. Very hard marker. No chances to make up marks.
If you plan on doing a major, he's a must have. I learned a lot about how to study history from him. Annotate your footnotes, and look up words and events for discussions that you don't understand, google goes a long way. Unfortanetly, he does elicite some drowzing on occassion, but the good outways it by alot!
Tough as nails in terms of marking and his expectations. Dr. Davies expects students to go above and beyond, taking the initiative in their research and preparation for classes and tests. A hard but fair marker. Lots of lectures and heavy reading assignments. If you are passionate about history, you will love him and learn a lot. Very helpful.
Good professor, found his lectures quite engaging...he could go into a little more detail about paper writing and referencing as his marking is fairly particular.
If you do what he asks you will do well in his class. Attend everyday, take good notes and follow the criteria. He loves what he does and such attitude is contagious. He tells you what you need to know, but could be a little more informative with how to put the research paper together. Main points, go to class and get good notes.

A decent prof. Inside the class, Davies is a proficient lecturer and class material is always relevant and interesting. Outside of class, he is almost completely unreachable and quite useless to consult with. He is a hard marker, so expect no luxuries.
hard marker, smart, interesting classes but unclear assigments
Boring lectures & quizzes that I feel don't accurately test one's knowledge.
Stephen is tough. No doubt about it. But he is an excellent teacher and if you do the work you will learn. He DOES NOT respond to emails, though, and DON'T miss the first class or you'll run into some problems.
His lectures are very good, I'd say not a bad course to start off in first year to get a taste, but the way it's structured isn't really for me in the long run, can be hard and unclear in terms of the papers, but everything else, fairly fair.
Legit prof
Really interesting man and great lecturer - he rarely uses notes. I like his gentle way of handling 'know it all' students who rarely come to class. You have to go and take excellent notes to pass. He is firm and fair. A strict marker - he gives no favours.
Loving this guy! Took the course as a quick summer credit and am so interested in WW1 now because his enthusiasm and knowledge make it exciting. Strikes me as a tough marker though. He certainly wants you to think for yourself.
Great Prof! Very knowledgeable and highly educated. Willing to answer all questions and thrives on group discussion. If your not willing to give 100% in his classes don't bother taking them at all. He only recognizes those who try. Lastly, ALWAYS do the reading - you'll regret it if you don't.
Knows what he's talking about, keeps class short and fun. Great professor.
Stephen's unique teaching style effectively brings the history of WWI to life. As a student, listen carefully to his lectures and pay close attention to the soldier's letters and poems.
Great professor once you get into how he structures the class. Reading and weekly tests are mandatory, but rarely requires the students to buy a textbook which is a big plus. His moustache is kind of cool.
Terribly dry. Hard marker. Gets dates wrong in lectures. Straight reads his notes - doesn't work for a visual learner (me). Gone from straight A's to nearly failing. Do not recommend.
Stephen is a fantastic Professor! A living, breathing encyclopedia of Historical events. Highly professional and well organized. Great lecturer with good sense of humour. As a marker, he is tough but exceedingly fair! I thoroughly enjoyed this class and recommend it to all who have a passion for History.
Easy going prof. Decent lectures but you don't use the textbook so don't waste the cash!
Stephen is hilarious. He doesn't put up with history Know-It-Alls. He has full control over what he teaches so when listening to lectures you know that he is passionate about what he is saying. BUT. The assignments are really vague and pointless, and for the exams it pays to take super detailed notes and have a study partner. LOTS of dates!
Attendance is really important for his class, and you have to be good at taking notes (or record his lectures).
Literally my favourite professor! I heard some less desirable things about him before the class but have been pleasantly surprised. If you are a student, like myself, who really cares about history then you will really enjoy Dr. Davies! He is so passionate and his lectures keep me very interested! I would 100% take his class again, even on purpose!
Normally waking up for an 8:30 class on Monday morning would be a real drag, not unless you have a Davies lecture for that first class! Davies is always super informative and doesn't keep you in class the full length if he doesn't have to. Hes a no BS prof and it very knowledgeable of his course material. However note taking is a must.
Davies is a nice guy with a good sense of humour and is extremely knowledgeable. His classes are very lecture heavy, and doing the readings are necessary to do well on the quizzes in this course. I actually found this 101 course more difficult than both of my other second year history courses. This class requires alot of time and effort!!!
It's quite clear Davies has been instructing for a while. His classes are very regimented, and he's mastered how to give lectures in such a manner that note taking is easy. His assignments and tests are more difficult then my other classes, but not impossible. Additionally he's a tough grader, but overall Davies is nice guy.
Stephen is excellent. A passionate prof who makes 3 hour history lectures worth going to. Hes a tough grader with a high bar for papers and finals (including writing in his final instructions this will be hard), but respects the content, respects his students, and inspires many of us taking upper level history classes to be better students.
Doesn't use any slides. All your notes are taken from his lecture in class. Super frustrating when you're trying to take notes and miss something key for a test. No powerpoints, or study guides to help you know what to expect on the exams. Expects you to know 100+ dates for the final. Honestly the worst class I've ever had. Do NOT recommend!
I would never recommend Stephen as a teacher. One of the worst teachers i have ever encountered. Thinking of taking a first year class with him? Don't he treats and marks it as a fourth year class. Is unclear with what he wants for assignments and his hard to get hold of if you have any questions.
Stephen is a tough first year prof. His lectures are interesting and clear, which made note taking easy. He is a tough grader though, and remembering all of the important dates of events for exams is really annoying and stressful.
He had amazing lectures, precise and detailed. He knew what he wanted you to know for the exams and he gave it to you. He was a fair marker. People got marks off his essay because his instructions weren't too clear, and his midterm was a wakeup call for how many dates you had to remember, which prepared us for the date-heavy final. Great guy though
Not a chill dood.
Stephen Davies is an ok teacher. He focuses primarily on history from what I can tell. He uses no textbook which is a plus, but that leaves you with only two places to get your information; His outdated WordPress website and the lectures. I wish he would use either the VIU learn site or slides in lectures. History class was not as fun as I wished
Doesnt gives you any books to refer from... how can anyone deal with a subject such as history by just listening you. Gives marks in peanuts.
He's a really bad professor who is a very tough grader and expects you to know a lot without teaching it. He said attendance was only mandatory for specific classes and then the tests will be directly from lectures that we were told we did not have to attend.
Stephen was an incredibly passionate professor, and I loved his class. The most important thing is to take very detailed notes during class; I ended up rewriting mine after so that they were easier to study from. Make sure you note and remember all the dates, because that is what you need to do really well on his exams.
Dr. Davies is a masterful lecturer, he presents the information at a manageable pace and emphasizes two or three times dates and names that should be remembered for examination which makes it super easy to study and he does so in a very calm and cohesive manner. With that being said you should take careful and extensive notes if you want to succeed
Stephen was ok. His lectures were quite informative, but they were very dry. While there are no textbooks, he did make us read a lot of articles. On top of that, he's a tough grader and has a very high bar when it comes to papers. If you take his class, be ready to read, and make sure your papers are sharp.
I found the way Stephen taught this course to be very refreshing and it sparked an interest in history I didn't have before. It took me a little bit to get the hang of how the course was laid out, but once I did it was smooth sailing from there. Although this course is asynchronous, I still feel as though I was able to stay on track.
DO NOT BY ANY MEANS TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROF!!!! HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD IN ALL OF MY 4 YEARS OF UNI. EXPECTS YOU TO HAVE A 10 PAGE PAPER FOR A SMALL DISCUSSION. HE ASSIGNS MULTIPLE HARD THINGS AND IS THE TOUGHEST GRADER DUE TO THE FACT HE EXPECTS WAY TOO MUCH FOR A 1ST YEAR CLASS. HE ALSO TRACKS PROGRESS AND WILL EMAIL TO CHASTISE.
Davies does have a good grasp of the subject matter, but if you take his online class be prepared to teach yourself entirely while he merely provides the readings. He expects you to extrapolate from the readings certian things that he doesn't always make clear. Grading guidelines are also very unclear.
Stephen Davies hasn't adapted well to the online world to say the least. He requires students to read pages upon pages of material online, gets you to write lengthy long answer questions every unit and his final assignment is difficult. He's also a harsh marker. But his material is interesting and thought provoking, he just delivered it poorly.
I really enjoyed the format of the course, as it really helped me to understand the content. Stephen was a fast and fair marker, and the amount of work was always manageable (even when left to the last minute lol). The content of this course was so interesting and I highly recommend taking this course to broaden your world view!
whenever you email him with questions he makes it sound as if it is a chore for him to email you back. in my option I paid for his class the least eh can do is answer my questions and make things clear for us when it is an online course. I would not recommend him or his course.
Online asynchronous class that is formatted very confusingly. He posts a 10 minute lecture every week, but it is almost impossible to listen to because it is so dry. He does no accept anything late and is honestly a bit of a (use any negative word) in email conversations. I would strongly not recommend this class as long as it is online.
Never take this guys class
Davies is by far the worst professor I have had in my 3 years here. He is the hardest marker ever and the content for a first year course is so in depth its harder then some of my third year courses. His feedback is terrible, he really just rips you a new one saying everything thats bad and doesn't point out one good thing. NEVER take his class
Mr. Davies is the toughest prof I have had so far, his expectations far exceed a first year level course. Mr. Davies fails to deliver a clear response in his emails. Overall, his course is heavy with materials and loads requirements onto his assignments.
Although very passionate and knowledgeable, his lectures are pretty dry with no slides, and overall Dr. Davies is pretty old school. He is a tough marker, but fair. There are pop quizzes and overall the strategies for assessment are very test/formal paper based. Very academic, but I enjoyed the content enough to do well.
I've taken 3 classes w Stephen and I love him! He's very clear about what he expects from you (if he says to memorize all the dates, do it!), feedback on assignments is clear on what you should improve, and KNOWS his stuff! He doesn't use powerpoints, so you definitely need to show up to take notes, and always do the readings/questions before class
- demands literal exact dates for exams, most of class failed midterm and dropped out - gives same lecture every year telling class it's their fault and he won't hear complaints - terrible lectures, no visual aids of any kind, just stands and talks uninterrupted for an hour and a half
I took HIST 102 as an easy final credit for my history minor yet was met with the hardest history class I have ever taken. There was no study guild for anything, the hardest grader I have even had( and this is meant to be a first year class) I would never recommend his to anyone.
course was not too bad but not what I expected. For a 1st year course, the volume of writing is high. For reference, my 1st year academic writing class wrote one 1500wd essay over the entire term. He does not accept late work *at all*, (no penalties, just zero). You will spend a lot of time searching and reading letters in the archive he operates.
The online version of his class is pretty easy. He unlocks units on a bi weekly basis and you go through them, some only take 1-2 hours for the whole 2 weeks. All his tests were written paragraph questions.
Since this class was a first year course i thought it would be somewhat easier and learn about the Cold War. What I got was easily the hardest first year course I've ever enrolled in. Ridiculously tough grader, long module question assignments and alot of the questions are based on "movies". I've had English classes with less writing. Do not take.
Stephen's class is fun and I learn more in his class than I do in any other class I've taken at the university. He knows so much about the first world war and Canada. He has a huge project on Canada and the war at the university so it's easy to get materials from the war for assignments. You can get a high grade if you follow his instructions.
You can tell prof davies wants students to do well. His classes are lecture heavy with no powerpoint so you have to be ready to take lots of notes. The quizzes/exams are based on how thoroughly you take notes throughout the semester. Read instructions carefully, he will not hesitate to down your mark if you don't do exactly what they say.
I have nothing against Prof. Davies personally. Many of his smaller assignments require to use all the sources in the module of which there are often many one of them had 16-18 sources for 4 questions. It's a lot of work and it's harshly graded, if you want a chalk go for it. It is not my style.
This prof is genuinely terrible and its a shame he runs the history departments clubs and ect, if you have this prof drop it asap. He treats first year course as if its a 4th year course and is incredibly harsh on you even if this is your first stint into these kind of assignments.
This is a fun class. The sources are interesting and very relevant. Discussions are fun and help us understand the sources and general history approaches. Dr Davies tells you exactly what you need to do for assignments, so there are no surprises with grades. His questions in class really make you think about history at a deeper level.
Toughest first year course I've ever taken. No need for it to be that hard. My biggest problem with S. Davies is that he won't reply to emails asking for help/ will not be clear when he does reply but then won't hesitate to give you a 0 and leave rude sarcastic comments in the feedback section rather than helpful ones. Don't take his classes.
No Powerpoints to accompany lectures Lectures online are quiet as all hell. Wants very specific details on every question Assignment scheduling has no flow Due to flow assignments are either back to back or far apart.(Had things due the day before and after Thanksgiving weekend.) Davies should not be teaching a first year history course this way.
Fun class and easy to do well in. He's clear about assignments and separates class into interesting sections that are straightforward to work on.
Kind and caring professor, willing to work with you in office hours, gets back to emails quickly. Feedback is usually mainly criticism but gives a good amount of feedback, also at times can be hard to meet rubric needs, overall for an online course good class and would take another with him.
I found Davies lectures to be interesting and easy to remember. It is important to go to class every day as he does not have slides included in his lectures to look back on. His modules can take some time to complete but students have 2-3 weeks to complete each one so there is plenty of time. He is a fair grader and no harder than other profs.
No PowerPoints and most lectures were all just talking with no help of visual aids but I still found it easy to focus as he has a good humour and is very knowledgeable in the history field
Professor Davies is one of the best history professors at VIU! He is very well informed about what he is teaching, and answers questions with in-depth thought and consideration. His assignment criteria is clear and simple to follow; however, if you do have any questions, he is very accommodating via email and his office hours! Definitely recommend!
Victorian England is one of my favorite classes so far. I think Davies's Canada and the War class is even better, but this one was also great. His style is laid back. He's clear about what you need to do in his instructions. Class discussions are informative and he knows so much that it can seem overwhelming but really he cares about students.
Genuinely great and empassioned person. His classes often only last 45 minutes, which can be good or bad, and also REMEMBER YOUR DATES. It is more than evident that Prof. Davies loves his job and his work with CLIP is incredible. He is very genuine and he does try his best to get you to enjoy his class, unfortunately my class was a tough crowd lol
