At first he seemed very rigid and not willing to bend on his opinions but after a few days I figured out that he was energetic, enthusiastic, and very open to hear any and all opinions from students
A rather good teacher, nice simple tests, just do your homework and you should do fine.
He was a great teacher. Very nice and understanding, willing to work with you to help you better understand what he is teaching. I would recommend him if you are interested in Philosophy or ethics.
Really good instructor so far!! Easy to follow and the best philosophy instructor on campus!
This is a very smart guy with an amazing sense of humor. He communicates clearly and openly with the class. I have nothing but good things to say - including HOT!
Great teacher who has a good sense of humor and very intellegent. Possibly the best professor on campus at this time. If you need to take a Philosophy class, make sure to check out Dr. Dickerson first.
IF you like the topic you'll be fine. I didn't... I'm not interested in talking in circles! Steve has a good sense of humor and is a good teacher -- the material is just dry! Take home tests/essays are easy, just read the material. Ask questions!!!
Best philosophy professor there ever was, is or will be. This is the kind of instructor a Master's Program needs.
He's a really good teacher, the first section is really boring and hard to understand but after that it gets really fun because you get to choose what you talk about. Ponography is the topic of choice now! great class for someone who likes to debate. He gives you points on showing up and talking, but doesnt tell you that till mid quarter.
This is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. He is very intelligent and encouraged us to really use our brains! He cares what everyone has to say and does not judge anyone's opinions. Great debate class. :-)
should take writing class first. nice guy with good sense of humor, but stupid subject unless all you want to do is learn about what other people think. You don't really get anything out of the class.
Really awesome teacher; classes were thought provoking. As long as you speak up in class and give your two cents, you'll do fine. Going is important for notes.
Dr. Dickerson opens his mouth and information automatically spills out. He's awesome, a great teacher, for sure. If you want to learn and have fun, he's your man. Concepts that I would most likely be confused with on my own or if I was taught by someone else are usually crystal clear. Dickerson rocks!
Best teacher I've had my whole life. He opens your mind and makes you much more intuitive to what other people think and why. He doesn't try to change your mind he just teaches you how to get all the facts so you can make your own decision. Awesome guy.
He is one sarcastic sonuvaprofessor! But I guess you have to be, after all you are dealing with abortion, and the death penalty. I never thought I would laugh at those issues. He is the BEST PROFESSOR at SPSCC!!
Loved taking Philosophy from him! He was a fun, lighthearted guy, but he knew how to keep the structure of the class. He answered questions clearly & was full of wisdom. Class time consists mostly of discussion, with some occasional reading and movie watching. No homework but reading. Tests are take home essays-he grades generously. Got an A easily
Steve is great! He can talk and stay interesting, I never get bored in his class. For any serious thinkers out there who wonder about the 'big questions' in life- this is for you.
Great teacher. Very nice and willing to help you succeed, allowed me to rewrite my first paper. Teaches with a bias, but what teacher doesn't? He's a little picky on papers. Recommended
Best professor I've had yet. ****erson does a perfect job of making the subject matter interesting. He is very honest, and has a great sense of humor. Only homework was reading, which would be discussed in detail the next day. Nice guy and very understanding. I've learned more from him in total than any other teacher I've had.
The greatest teacher i have had so far. He does something amazing, he gets people to learn without being a hard ass. His classes really open your mind, MUST TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
****erson clearly loves teaching this course. The tests were fair, and his expectations high. I would recommend taking him if you want a challenging look at philosophy.
His lectures are not very dynamic but he is pretty clear.Very knowledgeable and a reasonable work load. He has a good technique for analyzing texts.
He was my favorite prof. at SPS. On the first day he walks in and you think hes an old guy who's just going to lecture. Wrong! His class is entertaining and informative. At one point he made people against abortion argue for it and vs. He does a wonderful job of refuting arguments from both sides, its impossible to figure out his real opinion.
****erson is a great teacher in the fact that he is there to actually teach you rather than conform you. (I wish he could teach some of the other Professors ie..Hyde/Chase the point of teaching) He clearly and equally presents both sides of the issues and leaves it to you to make your own educated opinion.
Great teacher with a great sense of humor. Invokes your critical thinking skills while keeping the classroom comfortable and interesting. Highly recommended class!
LOVED this class
Great class I took this one online and really enjoyed it!! He posted lectures that really help you understand what is important in the text and gives you a sense of his perspectives. This class makes you think and use critical thinking skills and creative writing. I would defiantly take another class from him.
Very interesting class and great teacher. I'm not sure why someone with such an articulate vocabulary finds it necessary to use so much profanity in class--especially dropping the "F" bomb with so many young students in class. If he cleaned up his gutter mouth, I'd give him an A+ as a teacher.
this teacher makes learning fun i've never had a better teacher!!!
Great teacher and I would definitely recommend taking his class - I took it online which was based on one homework assignment every week and the Discussion Board, not too hard, but he really gets you to start thinking about many different aspects and topics in the world. A+
Good teacher, but tests can be pretty hard, not a lot of homework besides reading. Grade based on participation,2 exams, and final. All essay questions.
Dickerson is the man. I wish I had more teachers who had his style of teaching. Clear and goes over everything very well. Needs to write a book of start teaching at UW so I can take him again!
i like the class even though he doesn't grade as easy as i thought!
I took an online class and learned a lot! Great teacher and graded fairly. A+
This has got to be one of the greatest teachers on earth. He is clear, precise, funny, and makes sure you understand what you need to know. You get 3 take home exams, where you use your book and notes to explain in your own words what the question's answer is. He is not looking for quotes, but for you to explain in your own words what the answer is
he is awesome, fun class, not very much homework but you will still learn alot. his three hw assignemnts allow you to voice your opinions on the subject
He is definitely the greatest professor at SPSCC. He has a student teacher who is awesome, too. He is very clear with every ethical standpoint and is not bias. He has a talent for dry humor and is really professional and loves what he does. I am so glad I got to take ethics with this guy, he's a hoot.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!
AWESOME! Best class I have taken! His teaching is engaging and extremely helpful. I really like this class because he presentes both side of an arguement without bias and allowes the students to choose what they believe. I would definitely recommed this class to anyone!
He was a really funny man, probably my favorite professor at SPS so far.
Keeps the conversation moving in a smart way but, it can become a bit chaotic and, when it does he has the skill to contain the class.Funny, some-what humble, thought provoking, and just kinda of a cool guy.TAKE HIS CLASS
Great Teacher! Awesome sense of humor, definitely my fav teacher at SPS
Great!
I took philosophy online from him. Incredibly easy class, but I really enjoyed it, he provided great feedback on your assignments and I really enjoy this subject so that helps. The only assignments we had were one every Monday by 9am.. super easy.
HE WAS GREAT! SO INTERESITNG TO LISTEN TO AND TO ARGUE WITH! HE IS SO GREAT! TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES! HES SARCASTIC AND FUNNY!
Great teacher. He is funny, sarcastic and really explains concepts that he talks about. The homework really is easy, just reading some ethics papers from the textbook. It is a fascinating class, & the in class discussions are a great chance to think about moral issues. If you need/want to take an ethics class, take it from this teacher.
he is funny and direct. sometime with a theory that is hard to understand, he will use his personal experience as a joke to help you understand the theory better. he interacts with his students and even ask student for an example!
My favorite professor at SPSCC by far. He has definitely mastered his art like few other professors have. Fun, interesting teaching style. He has a lot of charisma and character, and it is clear that he loves what he does. I enjoyed philosophy before I ever took him, but after two classes with him, I can't get enough!
BRILLIANT professor. I'm interested in philosophy to begin with, but he makes me absolutely love it. Assignments aren't hard if you've kept up with your reading. Takes a very down to earth approach with super lofty concepts, which is tough to do. And speak up, too! It'll encourage discussion, and he's really good at nurturing it along.
When it comes to philosophy, a great teacher makes it impossible for his students to figure out his own opinion. This guy is great because he does just that by presenting as many sides to an idea as humanly possible in a crystal-clear manner while remaining totally neutral. It's impressive. I love his classes.
This class was very straight forward and he was very clear about what he expects of you in every assignment. I liked the class because it makes you think hard about what you believe and why you believe it. He's not trying to change anyone's mind, he just gets you think about your inherent beliefs.
The class is very straightforward. There are 3 exams worth 30% of your grade each. Then there is 10% for participation. You have no homework besides the readings and the exams are essay based with a two week timeline. He is an amazing teacher! Class discussions are so interesting and funny! He is very smart. DEFINITELY take his class.
Fantastic Professor! His teaching style is very laid back. Absolutely hilarious, cracks jokes all the time and makes learning much more enjoyable. I have a huge amount of respect for him, very smart. Not tough either, just think logically and you'll fair quite well.
Fantastic Professor! His teaching style is very laid back. Absolutely hilarious, cracks jokes all the time and makes learning much more enjoyable. I have a huge amount of respect for him, very smart. Not tough either, just think logically and you'll do fine.
The best Prof. I have taken at spscc, the only class I never dreaded going to even for one day.
Super hilarious teacher! Actually wrote down quotes he said. Definitely take this class he is amazing and teachers very well!
Best class I have ever taken! When a prof can make you step back and examine your own beliefs, that is some amazing teaching. He is extremely funny, and you won't want to miss a class. He makes the material VERY clear, and provides you with everything you will need to write your essays. It's helpful to copy down everything he writes on the board.
Took him for both Phil 101 and Ethics 102. Best professor I ever had. Very laid back, understands we are college students. Explains material greatly, take home exams. I suggest bringing your exams to him a day before they are due, I have never got lower than a A+ in his class because of this. Best prof ever. Very intriguing course.
I took his philosophy class online, and it was great! I wish I would've been able to take in on campus. The lectures were very straightforward, and each week we had to do an assignment and discussion. Pretty easy, and I learned a lot!!
I took this class online, teacher was fun& it was don't a difficult work load at all. The class wasn't tough, but Philosophy concepts can be. I recommend taking this class! I enjoyed it.
I have now taken two classes with this professor. He is consistent about grading and he explains concepts multiple times in lectures so if you pay attention and take notes it should be easy to learn the concepts. He often makes jokes which make the class more interesting. He will often show movies that connect with a concept.
Steve is probably the most entertaining and interesting professors that I have met at SPSCC. I would highly recommend taking at least his Phil 101 course. He does desire a lot of class participation, but if you can get over the anxiety that might come with doing so, you will find that you will learn quite a bit.
A fantastic professor! He makes the class interesting, exciting, funny, and relates the subject material to topics most people are familiar with. He is clearly very passionate about philosophy, which fuels the passion for philosophy in his students. I look forward to taking other courses with him in the future.
I liked taking his class. However, you have to work to get an A and for his exams you need to provide good evidence.
I really liked his teaching style, although some peopl complained of his "language" I thought he was funny and very clear on the exams. Pay attention in class and TAKE GOOD NOTES.
take this class. Easy B but you have to work for an A. I did not regret it.
This class is an easy A. You almost never have to work outside of class besides on the three essay exams that you have to finish on your own time. Saying this, there aren't many points given in this class so do well on your exams, it will make/break your grade. Dickerson makes philosophy interesting and fun!
I was hoping Steve would fail me intentionally so I could retake the class for fall quarter. Respectfully, a summer student.
I TOOK THIS CLASS ONLINE, AS LONG AS YOUR WILLING TO READ THE SECTION AND PUT SOME EFFORT INTO THE ASSIGNMENT, YOU SHOULD PASS THIS CLASS.
He is a kind, funny and SMART gentlemen. I loved his lectures and conversations. He is not an easy grader but is very straight forward about what he is looking for. Topics are always very interesting.
Awesome teacher! Take this teacher for any class I would guess he is just as great. He make the topics very interesting , allows debates between students, and lets students help choose what topic to discuss next. He may not be the easiest grader, but he will let you know exactly what he expects, so follow guidelines and you will do fine.
The best teacher of all times!
Super sharp guy. Great sense of humor. Knows his philosophy. Other student reviews mentioned his language-don't know what they were talking about. I was hoping for profanity, but got none. He's a great prof. Would definitely take again. Grades rest 90% on exams, but his grading criteria is clear and grading fair. Great class.
He is a great professor! I wish I had taken his classes earlier on. Kind, hilarious, sharp, good looking, and smart, I would highly recommend his class. You will learn a lot and it is clear he knows what he's doing!
I did enjoy this class, the written lectures weren't very long, there is a lot of reading from the book involved. There is only one assignment due every week along with a discussion post for participation credit, however you don't get the participation grade until it's too late and he doesn't allow you to fix it in any way. I would not recommend
You get one assignment due every week, Monday @ 9am. Participate in the discussions and you'll get an easy A. I forgot to do discussions and I got docked from an A to B in the end of the quarter, but other than that.. Great teacher.
He's a great teacher, speak up in class he likes that. Overall an easy A if you take the notes and do the essay's
A good professor that keeps the content interesting and funny. He has a knack for bringing up interesting examples that relate to what he is teaching. Would definitely recommend to all.
Awesome professor. Very helpful, very clear on the subject, and very interesting and amazing lectures. He encourages speaking up during class so do so a lot. Ask many questions, get into discussions with him, and the other students. Amazing class, definitely recommend it.
Super easy teaching style! Lots of in class participation discussion helps learn material. Teaches on sensitive topics in a very respectful and engaging way that demands critical thinking. Great speaker and fun to listen to.
I think this is a pretty good professor; I think that I am just not good at philosophy in general. I do better with clear black/white answers (math/science) and with this type there is a lot of debate and gray area. Shocked me that there's very little opportunity for credit (48pts--7 assignments) for the whole quarter; but no tests/finals.
I loved taking his class this past quarter. he is super flexible with tests and on the final exam it was a take home test and i forgot to save it and he let me hand write it so that i would still get credit! He has amazing lectures. the only thing that sucked was sometimes students think they're philosophers and try to stump him .
I took the hybrid class. As long as you take good notes/pay attention during class and do all the assignments, it shouldn't be hard to get an A. Final grade was composed of 3 take-home essay exams and participation in discussions on Canvas. His lectures were eye-opening, so I enjoyed this class overall.
Love this teacher! He seems very monotone at first but has the best dry sense of humor. Easy going and great class discussions. Really makes you think. There is not really homework but the tests are take home essays-make sure to take lots of notes!
He obviously is passionate about what he teaches. He is very clear in his teachings, and inspires students. He encourages students to think outside of the box.
One of the best professors I have ever had!! Exceptional teaching ability and really makes you question everything you've been taught! I can't wait to take his 220 class next quarter.
This teacher is amazing. He goes on to explain one point that must be true then goes to explain how it is false. He will change your outlook on alot of things. Amazing teacher but you need to be in class to absorb the material. HIGHLY recommended.
I took this class online and was pretty much an easy A. The only assignments are participating in the discussion once per week and turning in an assignment per week. Both are not too difficult to do as long as you elaborate and make sense of what you are saying. He seems to be open to all sides of things (aka all answers are basically correct).
I love absolutely everything about this human being and his class. If you're too lazy to go to class, don't sign up with Steve; he deserves the best. You really look forward to class every day I wish he taught every subject
He is well spoken and encourages students to look at problems from every angle.
Class was easy and learned quite a bit
If you rent the book on Amazon it's cheap (like $25). He gives you 3 papers, each is worth 30%, making attendance worth 10% . His lectures are entertaining and you won't want to even skip class because it is so fun. I hope I can take another class with him in the future, I highly recommend!
One of my favorite teachers at the college! You can tell he is incredibly intelligent and actually cares about what he's teaching. Very lecture heavy and few grades. He's tough and makes you work for your good grades, but in a way that makes you feel accomplished and proud of your work. Participation matters for a bit of the grade.
He is the most amazing teacher in the world. His lectures are by far the best. He makes you want to show up to class. He does only usually have three assignments for the quarter but as long as you put thought and some time into them you will do good (you also have two weeks to complete them). I highly recommend this teacher.
I liked this class. But there are only 3 assignments in the quarter and they are graded out of 4, so even half a point off can make a big difference.
I took this as an online class and was extremely easy. Two assignments (a discussion and then some questions) a week. He's pretty lenient on participation points and asks interesting questions that you care about. He's also pretty funny.
Grading criteria not clear. Scores are out of 4 and only little assignments. You have to do extra credit papers to get a good grade.
He's an amazing professor and he makes you really interested in the subjects. Although there is a textbook for this specific class, I never read anything because he explained everything in class. He makes the lectures interesting and not a waste of time. He only gives you 3 essays to write out of the whole quarter. Highly recommended.
He is a wonderful teacher. His lectures are engaging and interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory but the he explains possible exam answers in class. Just make sure to put in an effort and you'll be fine.
His lectures were well thought out and interesting. My class was a tough audience yet he taught it well. He's an easy grader and there weren't too many assignments. He keeps his beliefs hidden so people can formulate their own, which is important in a philosophy class. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but its always worth showing up.
Stephen has a great sense of humor which made the class more fun! I took him for philosophy and he grades out of 4 points on each assignment! He gives you a lot of time to do assignments as well and is a pretty fair grader!
Steve is really personable and likes to joke around. He teaches some fundamentals then allows the class to choose topics to further dive into. He writes his notes on the board which makes it easy for note taking. 90% of the grade is based on 3 essay exams which arent too difficult. 10% is attendance and participation. book is expensive go online
An absolute gem. His lectures were always investing and I always left class pondering what we discussed that day. Hes sharp as a whip and you can truly tell hes passionate about teaching. Yes, he might call on you but even if you dont have an answer, hed never try to publicly embarrass you which other teachers often do. 10/10 take him.
This class was super easy. Only three assignments in gradebook an participation counts worth an exam grade. As long as you answer it logically, you'll get a good grade.
This class will be easy for you if you're good at explaining your points thoroughly in essay format. Overall I found him to be a good, but not amazing professor. His class was sometimes boring and I often felt that discussions weren't worth participating in because students were allowed to blurt out in the middle of lecture. An OK class.
I'm weak at critical thinking, so I think this class was not that easy. However, I do enjoy the light coursework. Steve is a fast grader and helpful if you're stuck on some questions.
You come in and talk about philosophy. Sometimes you write papers but they're very vague and you just need to write about what you've discussed in class. Steve is truly my favorite teacher at SPSCC and his lectures help me change how I perceive the world. 11/10 would recommend taking ANY of his classes.
He gives you the chance to learn rather than be worried about tests and quizzes. He has very few assignments with lots of time to complete them. The way his class was structured gave me the chance to get really interested in the material without being stressed.
One of the best professors I've had. Lectures are engaging, topics are interesting and controversial, and coursework is light. Grades quickly and with care. Strict on deadlines, but there is usually two weeks to work on a medium-sized assignment before it's due! My only critic is that I wish it could be an in-person class so discussions are better!
10/10 LOVE this professor. He is funny, caring, and as long as you give your opinions and do the very simple and light workload, you will be fine! His class made it to where I could focus more on my harder classes!
Fun class! Some of the readings and lessons have really stuck with me. Can be dense at times but never unreasonably so.
Philosophy 101 with Stephen Dickerson has been my favorite class, hands down. He is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. The concepts in the class were extremely interesting, he highly valued accuracy and detail and encouraged class discussion, and I highly recommend this class to ANYONE with any sort of interest in philosophy.
