Donaho is very intelligent, but he thinks in his own world! He is very philisophical! VERY! Be prepared to read, read, read!
tough as nails, a little out there, but an interesting man
Very approachable & helpful. Fabulous lectures; I learned a lot from him.
If you can pay attention and take notes during class this is the teacher for you. He explains stuff so well that a 5 year old would understand, and he only tests you on what he lectures about!
Mr. Donaho is so excited about what he teaches not only that but he is so clear and helpful
Not just a grade. His style means that you must understand concepts. Very nice neo-twill fashion, to boot.
Donaho is so great! He's a true logitian and if you ask, he'll show you his tricks!
Good people however I thought the class was a little challenging. Leave room for HW
Wonderful. He's hilarious and teaches so even the most uninclined can understand. I'm in Logic now and have a huge crush on him.
The class is challenging especially if you are not mathematically inclined. Stephen is witty and very intelligent as might be expected. I still can't forget "Great Logic Bank in the Sky". Also when he says he has students who ask for problems later for fun, believe him and it does get fun.
I love this man, I want to have little logician babies with him!
His class is great...almost a comedy show...very easy to understand and always willing to help.If your not into math I would recomend his class! If you understand the material the test are easy.
Great teacher highly recommended.
Incredible class, its easy if you pay attention and ask enough questions. He makes sure to answer any questions that are out there he also makes an effort to learn the names of his students.Examples are great and really send his point clearly.I'll never forget Marva and Odile. This is a great class.
I had Donaho for Philosophy, and I must say that he is a fantastic teacher. He conveys his clear ideas with diction and is always open to questions. I enjoyed his teaching style so much that I am now taking his Logic class. A class that, with him teaching, would almost take me effort to not do well.
this class is a really hard class for me. I like the way he teaches the material, but I think he goes entirally too fast. He is a really good and dedicated teacher when you want to be a really dedicated student. This class was super hard for me and I spent alot of time w/ the the beloved tutors!!! G
I had a huge crush on him. He is young and into the subject material. He hangs out with the students after class.
First I didn't like the class. He seemed a little intimidating. Later I just loved it! I feel like I learned a lot! He encourages participation and never says that what you think is wrong. Funny, witty. Grade is based on just 3 things. Hangs out with students after class.
LOVED IT! Didn’t do so well but loved it.Donaho is gifted. He took complicated, potentially dry subject matter and doused it with intriguing flavor. He was super helpful, funny and intelligent. He is really into his logic and languistics,is an expert on philosophers past and present.
Cool class, learn a lot about how to think through problems then create moral theories to work through them to solve and counter them. Great teacher, I enjoyed the class a lot. Just remember when you take it, he will never answer a question how you want him to, he provokes your mind.
This guy has a gift! He not only teaches you the material, but also helps you enjoy the class and even the homework! He makes you feel smart and he's hilarious.
GREAT TEACHER!!!
Fun subject - I loved the stuff! If you do understand it right away, you'll get really board though because he will explain things many times, with many examples. And do your homework! It's fun, and will help.
Mr. Donaho is the man, it is almost impossible to not enjoy his courses. Do your work and be on time, No "sotto voce"- Through hillarious antics, on stage presence and clear mastery of the English language he conquers and controls this departments intelect.
One of the best teachers ive ever had in my life. Incredibly nice and steadfast. If you have any problems he will work with you to overcome them for as long as it takes. His classes are incredibly easy with amazingly easy finals. As long as you show up everyday (or mostly) and take adequate notes you will ace everyone of his classes.
fantastic teacher, super charming and funny. i have a crush on him, but i think everyone does. mysterious and a little shy, but a great teacher.
Professor Donaho is an excellent teacher: passionate about his subject matter, patient with his students and quick-thinking in discussion situations. He gives clarifying examples and will not hesitate to slow the class down if any particular point is unclear to his students. This is the hardest class I've ever taken, but it's also the class I've learned the most from. I highly recommend Professor Donaho.

Subject of the class was hard but he made it very interesting. Very understanding teacher and fair on the grading of papers. I would definitely take a class from him again. He was awesome.
I loved the class. He is very helpful if you don't understand the material to the point of meeting with you one on one like once a week to help you. Tests are open note/open book. Very awesome teacher.
I've left the Norm, am at a University, and I miss his class. He is the greatest teacher I have ever had (including professors I've had here.) Anyone who does poorly in his class either doesn't care to learn or didn't believe him when he said you had to practice the material. Professors should take his class to learn how to be better professors.
Best Prof. in school
Stephen knows his Logic. He knows it so much that he keeps you there as long as possible. Although, within that time, you take in a lot but get so much more. I enjoyed him as a teacher. If he cut his long hair and quite smoking, then he would let you out early. Although, we all know, logically it's a false statement.
I've since left Normandale, and am at MNSU - Mankato, and his class is one that I've missed the most. He is an awesome professor who definately knows what he's talking about. Had I stayed at Normandale, I would have taken his class over again just to try to get a better grade. He's awesome.
He is a very very very wonderful professor. He is easy to talk too, and takes the time to explain work problems to you.
I also took intro to philosophy with him. He is amazingly patient, particularly for someone so much smarter than you are.
still totally in love with this guy, after all these years. all the ratings are correct. fascinating guy, great teacher.
Quite a genius
This guy is incredible. Genius, Funny, Laid Back, Helpful and super cool. I wrote a paper in my comm class about him because he inspired me so much. sounds cheesy but it's true.
I was extremely intimidated of this class before taking it (look at the textbook, it looks like another language!) but Donaho excels at explaning this subject in an easy and fun manner. He's a great teacher and I'm thankful I took him. Although I don't have a huge interest in philosophy, I want to take another of his classes if I am able to.
What an amazing person. He's smart, completely and utterly smart. He will make you think in every way possible. This is more than a class, it's mind blowing. I think every female who takes the class will crush on him just a little bit, it's hard not to. He's one of those people.
He is an amazing teacher. Totally helpful and will try to explain things so that everyone can understand. He is also very patient and that is important because not everyone gets the material right away. I never wanted to miss his class and was sad when it was over.
Steve is the best, he really makes logic interesting and easy to learn. I actually enjoy showing up to class; he is funny and incredibly smart. Take good notes and do the problem sets. I highly recommend Steve for logic and am looking forward to Intro. to Phil. In the future.
Its so funny and so true that its easy to have a crush on him! I didnt think that i was alone! Yes, he is defineately brilliant and a fabulous teacher. The material is difficult, but he challenges all of us to do our best and beyond.Always helpful and so respectful of everyone's individual opinion. Be prepared to work, but to also see it pay off!
I didnt realize so many girls had crushes on him, but I am certainely one of them. There is something about an amazingly smart, witty, independent, funny man that is hard to resist, even if his hair is longer than yours and he wears wool sweaters everyday. He is an amazing teacher, influential philosopher and I'm honored to say i've taken his class.
One of my favorite teachers of all time, the man actually has a PHD, which is unusual for Normandale. I found him to be very intelligent and enjoyed discussing ethical theory with him after class. He is also very reasonable and never shoves his opinion down your throat in a debate. Best teacher at Normandale, take him if there is any way you can
I can't speak highly enough about Prof. Donaho, he is such a brilliant man and amazing instructor. I loved his class and looked forward to his dry/odd/intelligent sense of humor. One of my favorite instructors at NCC.
excellent instructor, The class is difficult, but if you attend on a regular basis you should have little trouble getting a reasonable grade. And for the ladies he may need to go on what not to wear and get a hair cut, but still he very attrative, and highly intelligent.
Professor Donaho was hands down the best teacher I've ever had in my entire college career (in 4 schools, 3 states). His odd sense of humor actually makes it fun to go to class...and makes learning easier, too. He's not only the best instructor I've ever had, but also one of the most interesting and unforgettable people I've ever met! :o)
I took his Logic class because I hate math, but it is a requirement. He not only made the material easy to understand, but also has a great sense of humor. I highly recommend his Logic class.
Donaho is any amazing professor! All this class requires is going to class and doing the problem sets at home that take you roughly 15 minutes. This class is difficult one to understand but Donaho explains it like you wouldn't believe! It's an easy A as long as you show up on a daily basis!
Great teacher! Logic can be pretty difficult to understand, but Stephen teaches it like it is a game! It's a great alternative to mathematics. Highly recommend the class, or more importantly...Stephen Donaho! [ps: take it with him, I heard the other profs. use more symbols than Donaho uses.]
BEST professor on campus. Extremely knowledgeable about material, easy to understand. Very friendly and always available outside of class for any concerns at all. If you get the chance, take his class. It's well worth it.
Stephen is the best instructor ever! He is an extremely talented and gifted instructor. He explains things crystal clear. Class is fun and easy if you pay attention and do all the work.
AWESOME TEACHER! Extremely clear and helpful- very understanding guy. Had no idea what 'Logic' was about and got an A+ in his class. If you have trouble, there are tutors, you can email him, and he has office hours.
Great stoic man. Clever, intellectual, easy to talk to, and witty.
Dr. Donaho is brilliant. A PHD in philosophy says it all. Memorizes each student's name from the first class, how he does that, i don't know. See the tutors, ask questions, your final grade is based on your tests. I actually ending up liking Logic. Love his lectures and quips.
The best professor I've ever had. Helpful, clear, witty, and clearly knows the material inside and out.
Marva. Odile. I couldn't have learned logic from anyone else. Mr. Donaho is the best professor I've ever had!!!
I took his phil class during the summer - I was afraid I'd barely get by with it being an intense subject and having it be more face pace (4 weeks instead of a whole semester) - to my surprise I did quite well and it was fun! Do your homework and go to class - you'll do fine! I wouldnt take logic from anyone else.
Excellent teacher, very helpful and kind.
Very intelligent and interesting man. My case in point: he wrote the textbook for the class. You really have to take extensive notes to get an A, but I respect the fact that he is hard on slackers and expects his students to show up and be prepared. If you miss one single class period, you will not get an A. Take notes and show up, you'll do fine.
Exemplary professor. Other educators should study his ability to lecture, communicate AND listen. Truly, there is no stupid question in his class. Has a good sense of humor to boot. Although he is "scary smart," his intelligence does not spill over into arrogance - a rare quality based on past experience. If you need logic, take him!
Everything already stated is true. He is amazing!!! Pay attention, take notes, do your homework and you'll be fine. The best teacher I've had by far.
I took Donaho's Logic class. I had an extremely good time in his class, he made a 4 hour class feel like a 3 hour class. He is hilarious and I believe he was born to teach. I highly recommend this teacher.
Like the previous postings have stated, Donaho is incredibly intelligent and he also happens to be really funny. He is a great professor for these reasons, but also becase he has a gift for understanding how to teach knowledge to students. Amazing professor!!
Donaho is extremely intelligent and an amazing teacher! Logic is a tough subject, but his teaching technique makes it a lot easier than it probably would be with any other teacher. He's not bad to look at either. ;) Do not miss class! You will fall behind!
Absolutely fantastic. Donaho is one of the most awesome people you will ever meet. Logic is tough, but he makes it fun and his sense of humor is great. Take good notes and ask for help if you need it. He is more than willing to help!
Donaho is an amazing professor. He is hilarious, and he truly has a gift for teaching. I highly recommend taking a class from this man.
I took Intro to Logic to satisfy the dreaded Math credit. I am a creative person by nature, and never expected to "get" Logic. Professor Donaho has a way, that's for certain. He has a passion for what he teaches and a knack for relaying information in a fashion that translates to everyone's comprehensive abilities. Go to every class and take notes.
Very good instructor and is very, very sexy as well.
philosophy was way over my head, but he made sure you know what he was teaching. i actually paid attention to his lecture on plato... and kinda cared
philosophy was way over my head, but he made sure you know what he was teaching. i actually paid attention to his lecture on plato... and kinda cared
hes a good teacher. He made that boring letters and symbols fun!lol.i just didnt understand logic at all so i dropped the class time to go back top math:(
I recently took a 2 week logic class with him. I didn't have the pleasure of making it to every class period due to work but I can say that he is an all around amazing person and an extraordinary professor. And VERY good looking.
Stephen is incredibly talented and knowledgeable. A professor of this caliber is rare at any college - not only a community college. The logic class provided as good an overview as possible for such a deep subject. Propositional and predicate logic are covered along with some history. No higher-order logics, abstract algebras, computability, etc.
He is the BEST!!!! I loved this class and thought it was fun and it was because of Donaho. he really cares that you learn the subject not just memorize it. it's also ALL open book and notes people! love im' he's the best!
Dr. Donaho is a logic master. If you listen to his lectures and pay attention you'll do fine. One huge tip: practice your proofs and truth tables. He is very fair and really is passionate about logic. He made it very interesting to learn.
Dr.D is the second prof I have taken logic with (failed 1st time at another university). This man was born to teach. He makes class interesting by cracking jokes and telling anecdotes. Makes an otherwise boring subject fun. I would recommend him to anyone looking to fill this general credit. Wish I could give this guy TWO chili pepper ratings!
Dr. D was probably the best processor I ever had. I never thought in a million years that I would be able to follow logic. In anycase, He makes the material crystal clear. He never leaves students behind, if you need help he will explain until you understand. Strong teacher, I am glad I took his class
Awesome instructor!! I was lost and he made sure I understood it. He is always available if you have questions! Highly recommend him!!!
Whether you're interested in logic or not, TAKE THIS CLASS. Absolutely incredible prof., you can tell he loveloveloves to teach, and he does an EXCELLENT job. He explains why we're doing each specific lesson and keeps everything in perspective. His lessons are professing genius, clearly he knows his stuff backwards and inside out. He is SO. GREAT.
Prof. Donaho is by far the best teacher I have ever had in all 4 colleges I have attended. Anybody that does not get an A or B has not tried. His lectures are clear as are his excpectations of students. he is available for questions and really enjoys helping his students understand the course material. Lessons beyond the classroom are learned.
Stephen was amazing. He made learning a difficult subject really fun. You also get to use your notes on tests which come in very handy. He's one of the only teachers I've ever had that gives you almost full credit for wrong answers, as long as you write out how you got to your conclusion. I wish I could have him all the time.

This guy is the poster child of a real professor. He has a gift of explaining things beyond crystal. He loves questions and no question is dumb. This isn't an easy A *BUT* it's fun. I took this to get out of math and didn't expect it to be fun but if you do the HW and try to pay attention you will learn. Grades based on 3 exams (totally open book!)
Donaho is by far the best teacher or professor I have ever experienced.
I wish I could take ALL of my college courses with this man. Seriously. It makes me kind of sad that I can't.
I took Intro to Philosophy online. Professor Donaho was well organized and helpful and responded to e-mails quickly, which I can't say about some other professors that I have had for online classes. I do think that he is more accesible to his in person students. So, take in person rather than online if you need extra help.
By far the best professor I have ever had. I took all the classes he taught except for logic. I graduated but am thinking about heading back to take logic because I hear it is worth taking. I highly recommend Donaho and everyone should at least take into to phil.
He is an awesome professor! He explains things well and makes the class fun! :)
Best.Teacher.Ever. Logic is my favorite class. I also have a HUGE crush on him!
Great instructor, teaches difficult subject well.... loves questions and treats students with respect. Would take another class from him in an instant.
So I was going to write about how awesome Prof. Donaho is, but I see everyone else has done that for me.
This is my second class with Professor Donaho. Whenever I hear someone say they need to take a Philosophy course, I plead with them to take it with Dr. Donaho. He is passionate about the subject, patient towards those who are not, and if you show your effort in learning, there's no reason you won't get a passing grade. He is also funny!
One of the best professors at Normandale. Extremely intelligent and does anything to help you learn the material. Overall, good person.
Amazing Professor!! He's very intelligent and he's very passionate about what he teaches. Welcomes questions and genuinely cares about your success in his class. I also had a huge crush on him! Highly recommended professor! :)
Best professor I have ever encountered including my time at 2 universities in Florida. The man is a true genius and commands respect because of his teaching prowess. I have taken 2 of his classes and wish I could take 20 more. If you are lucky enough to take one DO IT!
coolest dude ever. way funny, super nice and so so smart. defs tries to break it down so anyone can understand but this class is no cake walk. if you think it'll be easier than a math class, youre wrong. gotta put work into this class to understand it. he is super helpful and willing to sit with you. way fun class, learned alot about life. do it!!
He is an amazing professor, brilliant in fact! The key to passing this class is getting help immediately if you don't understand something. He emphasizes that. I utilized the tutors to keep me on track. Donoho wants you to succeed & will do anything possible to help you. Super nice guy and really funny.
Took Intro to Philosophy online. Huge workload, but he tells you exactly what to do each week. He even tells you what order to do things in. I felt a bit like I was in high school.
Took Intro to Phil with him all the way back in 2006, and to this day he still the best professor I have ever had. Very calm speaker, challenging, intuitive, great story-teller, thoughtful, interesting; I could go on and on but I won't, Donaho is the man and I recommend taking whatever he is teaching.
Professor Donaho is a great logic teacher. He provides clarity and expertise, as well as a genuine interest in your success. The only downside might be that he only grades based on three logic tests, nothing else - which might make it more stressful for some students. I would recommend taking for logic.
He does a wonderful job teaching a hard class.
First day was scary as he listed off everything that we would be doing, but once you get past the random time that he raises his voice to state a point. He is a GREAT Teacher! He is in my Top 3 for the professors here at Normandale. Very easy to approach with questions and always willing to think outside the box!
He is an excellent teacher! I highly recommend taking his course in person.
A fantastic teacher who is truly passionate about logic! He is very helpful and will never make you feel dumb for asking for help! He explains things very thoroughly and is always willing to answer questions. Highly recommend him!
Donaho is a super teacher. Loves his topic, demands good work, funny, but very helpful. He has many hours open for questions & there are several tutors. Grades on 3 tests only but he tries to find points for the students. Highly recommend taking a course from him.
My favorite teacher ever! I learn so much from this class. I was nervous taking the logic class, but professor Donaho explains subject very well. I will strongly recommend taking this class with this great professor! Just attend classes regularly, keep up with homework and you will succeed in this class.
Professor Donaho is an excellent teacher who clearly loves what he teaches. The class can be hard at times if you do not show up for class everyday nor take notes and his advice on the material. Otherwise, his grades are based upon three exams that you take throughout the course. I received an A in his class. :)
Without a doubt the best professor I have had in my college career thus far. I was very nervous going into this class but he tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed and is very much available for extra help. If you get the chance, take one of his classes!
I have never been one to get great grades.Going into this class I was worried because I had no idea what it was going to be about. Without a doubt he is the number one teacher I have had in all my years of schooling. I have never met a more helpful teacher. This is a very hard class, but you work and ask questions, you could get an A like myself
With prior knowledge about logic I took this class expecting an easy A...Instead I ended up withdrawing to maintain my 4.0 GPA. Class is only graded on 4 tests. Although he is a very brilliant person I just did not enjoy his classes
One of the most engaging and helpful teachers I've ever had. I went into this class expecting it to be very difficult and boring- but his teaching method is so effective, I ended up with one of the highest grades in the class. Just go to class and pay attention, and you'll do just fine.
Best professor at Normandale. Highly recommended. Hard class if you do not attend.
Professor Donaho is the mst brilliant man I have ever encountered! I was afraid to take logic becuase I heard so many harsh things, but he make everything CRYSTAL CLEAR. Attendance is mandatory, miss 1 class & you'll be severly behind. Sample exmas are nearly identical to the real ones. He's extremely helpfu, knowledgable, and passionate. TAKE HIM!
He is alright. Love the way he teaches the class but sometimes he needs to stop making it so hard on students.
One of my fav profs! Very clear & encourages questions. Im quiet in classes. His class helped me learn to speak up. Dont be afraid of logic. Great for nonMath students and very fun! Grade is based on 3 exams which scared me a little, but if u do the practice assigned ull do great. I always felt prepared. Allowed us to use cheat sheet for exams.
Grades based on 3 exams. Sometimes yells, but go to every class, listen, ask questions, do homework, and you will do fine! Dr. Donaho is genius, observant, witty, and wanting his students to succeed. I will be find another PHIL class to take just so I can have him as a prof again!.. Doesn't hurt that I find him stimulating and sexy;)
Good teacher but do not take ethics online if you are not good at philosophy and writing.
I wasn't sure what to expect for my first online class, and philosophy at that, but Professor Donaho was great. He makes things explicitly clear for assignments and expectations. If you take him, I recommend stopping by his office to enhance the class experience; he's a great guy. Don't fall behind. Definitely enjoyed it; he's brilliant.
Amazing teacher. Very intelligent, with a witty sense of humor. I really enjoyed this class. If you study the material and memorize the material you will do fine. He tells you exactly what do to do to pass. Ask Questions if you have them.
Stephen Donaho is one of the best profs I've ever had. Logic is more like a math class than a philosophy class but don't let that scare you off! He gives you everything you need to pass, he's very clear, and he's always there if you need help. He encourages questions and demands participation. He loves logic and genuinely cares about his students.
Donaho comes across as very serious and after the first day of class I decided I wanted to drop it. But I gave it another try, and I LOVE this class! He's extremely dedicated and enthusiastic about the subject, but underneath that is a sense of humor like no other and an extreme level of care for his students. HIGHLY recommend!
Amazing Teacher if you ever get the chance to take his logic class, I would highly recommend. Just do not fall behind. He tells you exactly what you need to do to succeeded in the class, if you follow those instructions you will do fine.
Great Teacher! I wouldnt have passed without him as a teacher. I am horrible at match, but I did well in this class. Come to every class, pay attention, and ask for help, you will pass.
Hard teacher to ask questions, when he goes over homework he looks at solutions. Which makes it hard to go over homework problems that way. I got a D even though I put in all the effort. Go to tutor and never miss a day. Danaho is horrible teacher to learn from.
This class requires attendance and participation. The teacher has the respect of the students for being clear about what e wants from them.
Clearly lays out direction and teaches skills needed to succeed, gives you all the necessary tools, up to you to do the work and practice. By far the best class I've ever taken. Do the homework and you'll learn the skills necessary to ENJOY the class. Seriousy looked forward to going every week. ASK questions and for help if you need it.
He is a great professor. Teaching is very clear and constantly makes sure that everyone is following him. Slides jokes into his lectures easily and puts extra effort in to remember your name. Highly recommended.
His Logic class puts many mathematical principles to test, although this class is very philosophical, in a witty type of way. He draws many practical examples from real life, connecting logic to our way of life. eg. Marva and Odile. There is a student tutor for the course. I was surprised to see there were some no shows on exam one, no retakes.
Took this class many years ago and he is still one of my favorite professors, even after finishing my masters. Being a person who avoided math, this class was very interesting and different way of thinking. Still catches my memory in a positive way!
This class is awesome. Stephen really lays down the law with what he expects from students to pass. Go to class, take notes, do the homework he assigns and you WILL pass. Logic and philosophy aren't hard subjects. If you practice this class, you will get an A. Stephen is great. Also hilarious.
Stephen was one of the best professors I've ever had here at Normandale. He is very clear on what you need to do to pass his course. Make sure you follow his directions. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Make sure to attend every lecture, take good notes, and do the problem sets. I actually enjoyed going to this class; I'm going to miss it.
I took this class online. I wish there had been more instructor feedback in the discussion part of the work. I think it would be helpful so students are aware if they are truly grasping the concepts or not. It's basically self study. Lots of writing and reading.
Take him if you want to solve the puzzles of the logical universe.
Ethics 1103 online with Donaho is a tough class. Mr. Donaho will not give you any notes or powerpoints to assist you. You will read a lot and write a lot of papers. Also participation in discussions posts are worth zero points toward your final grade. You will learn everything by your self. All Donaho does is grade your papers.
First day you're like "Oh God, what did I get myself into?" He was intimidating at first. This is only him making it absolutely clear what he expects out of you. I like that. If you're not a slacker and serious about your classes and education you will be a great fit. He's incredibly funny and he genuinely cares if you are "getting it" or not.
Ethics online is very tough. No quizzes and homework here , so do you best to pass on 5 essay exams 8pages each and a long final paper of 12 pages to get A. Nothing will pull you up as the discussions do not count as grade . Also , grammatical errors may turn your thoughtful essay to F. Be aware !
He's very engaging and expects verbal responses to all his questions. He always takes time to make sure everyone is caught up and makes people comfortable asking questions. This is good if you need the extra help because he goes really slow but can get annoying if you know what you're doing. Makes logic seem easy and is fun to listen to.
I show up and participate every class, haven't missed one. He tells you if you show up and take the notes you'll pass, but that's obviously not true. he's so confusing and assumes you understand the first time and if you don't you're on your own for help. Answers to his test questions are ridiculous. he told me to stop wasting his time oh my test
He scared me during the first week of class. After that though the class went pretty well, no turned in homework which made it so you have to be independent. This is a class you NEED to study for. Keep up to date on his assignments and you will do fine. Course packet was only $6 bucks
One of my favorite professors at Normandale. The 1st day of class will be terrifying, but as long as you go to class every day and pay attention/ask questions, you'll do fine. You have 3 exams total & each one is worth 1/3 of your grade. Great guy and great teacher, just don't disrespect him.
This class is tough. that said however, it isn't punishing. the subject matter is interesting and at times fun. The professor can best be described as a mad genius. He loves helping his students and is very helpful, if you skip class though even once you are screwed enough said. Donaho is fun & engaging and him and the class are brilliant.
I took Ethics online and I have to withdraw the class after having a D on my first exam. 5 long essay exams and 1 final paper make the course total points. No assignment, no notes on D2L with an Old text Book . I don't advise anybody take Ethics online unless you are part time student. You must have some philosophy info before taking this class.
Donoho is the man, I took him for logic which is a tough subject since it's like learning a new language. To this day he is my favorite professor. He starts out te first week by yelling and intimidating you. Later on you'll understand why he is so tough on his students. He actually cares for everyone. Show up to class, do HW, and you'll be fine.
Donaho is an inspirational professor. He encourages everyone to work hard, and learn. I believe that he loves what he does and it shows in his teaching. Would highly recommend his Logic class.
This was a tough course. Expect to write and write well! He has high expectations where essays are concerned.
Professor Donaho is so far the best instructor I've encountered at Normandale. He is simply a great professor and also a mad genius! First week will be terrifying but you've nothing to worry about as long as you follow his expectations. Attend every class and do the work he assigns. He inspired me to take my study of logic to a further extent!

If every professor at Normandale was like him, the school would be in much better shape. He TERRIFIED me after the first class meeting (basically tells you the class will be hell and no nonsense is tolerated) but he's a hilarious guy and explains everything in such clear detail. I never came out of a class knowing more than what I learned from him!
By far the BEST teacher i've ever taken or had in my 14 years of being in school. I was scared to take this class because i've never understood math but he was so helpful and really made sure each and every student understood what was going on no matter how much it cut into class time. Very clear about what you need to do to pass. BEST TEACHER EVER
Donaho is very good at what he does! He makes it crystal clear to you what he expects of you- verbal answers, taking notes, homework. If you attend lectures and do what he tells you to, you'll get an A or a B no problem. Almost all points in 1102 come from tests, which are pretty easy imo. Help is available if you need it!
I took Ethics online and it was kind of tough. The first and second exams were a lot of writing for the essay questions. I thought he graded pretty rough also. The writing assignment required a lot of writing also! At the weekly discussion posts weren't too much, just had to post 3 responses every week.
online class for Phil1103 Ethics, helpful, cares about students, answers back quickly, good feedback, likes if you show your own appreciation for the class, Not too picky, took a summer class for a month and the only things due were 3 weekly reflections from the reading & 2 exams a & 1 writing assignment
I took this as my online summer course and it was difficult since it was one semester crammed into a month. Donaho had clear set guidelines and is more than willing to help. The hard part of this was to not procrastinate. There is a lot of reading, discussion, and writing that goes into this class. My advice: Keep up with the work and schedule.
Professor Donaho is honestly an amazingly talented and genius professor. My biggest advice is DO NOT skip class, or get caught not paying attention. He is extremely serious about following along. Don't be intimidated by him the first few weeks, but definitely don not slack off or miss doing homework as tedious as the problems are.
Professor Donaho was by far one of the best professors I have ever had. He terrified me the first few class periods, but I learned to love his class. He tolerates no nonsense and hates slackers. If you're looking for an easy class, this isn't for you.
Professor Donaho is very knowledgeable and a great professor. He has a way of teaching logic that is easily understood. He is a little scary on the first day but if you can get through that you will be glad you stayed. I think he just wants to weed out ones who wouldn't make it through the course. I would definitely take another one of his courses!
Stephen Donaho is definitely my favorite professor. He is very intelligent and is respected in his field of philosophy. Logic was a little tricky to learn but quickly became my favorite class.
A Professor who actually WANTS students to succeed. Don't withdraw because of the first day of class. The course moves VERY fast & there is no time to get behind. USE THE TUTORS! If you don't like doing homework, learning new things & putting in extra work in classes, don't do this. I got a C w/ over 10 hours of tutoring, it's not easy, but doable!
The first class he does this "scary teacher" act. I almost dropped out but thankfully I didn't. He is actually a really effective professor and does a good job at explaining the material so students understand it. However, YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS, do the assignments, and study for tests. If you can't do that- you will not do well in this class.
The only graded assignments were two exams that were 8 page papers & one written 12 page paper. We had weekly discussion posts that didn't count towards much & it would have been nice if he provided more feedback to let us know if we were on the right track in our own learning. Be ready for confusing concepts, some previous philosophy may help.
Professor Donaho is awesome! As much as I do not care for Logic, he makes it easy to understand. As most of the other reviews have said, and I'll say it again, YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS! It moves quickly but as long as you are in class to ask questions about things you may not understand right away, he will take the time to cover it again.
He is an excellent teacher. I am not great at math what so ever, but Donaho makes it seem so easy. In order to pass you have to attend class and do exactly as he says when he gives direction and/ or instructions.
An educator that really has a passion for the success of his students! I loved his class and I never felt confused because the environment was always open for questions. Don't slack off! Do the work and you will do great in the class.
Stephen Donaho, or as I like to call him "Lord Logic," is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is absolutely hilarious, and a really intelligent guy. The class was difficult, but as long as you show up to class and do your homework you'll do fine. He really is incredible. He cares a lot about his students, and wants everyone to do well.
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. I took this as my math credit and was dreading the class - I ended up liking it thanks to Donaho. He's so funny and explains everything incredibly clearly. He is always willing to help you and answer your questions, too. Definitely take his class!
Stephen is the best professor I have ever had. He truly cares about his students' success. He does this scary teacher thing the first day and almost made me drop the class, but it was so worth staying in. It was a tough class, but make use of the tutoring center and you'll be fine. This was the first class I've felt as though I learned something.
Stephen was a great Ethics professor! He was very clear in what he wanted and how he graded. There is a lot of reading but that should be expected with any philosophy class. He gives very thorough and great feedback so that you can learn and continue to do better in his class. I'm not much of a deep thinker but I passed with an A.
Unrealistic expectations.
Don't be intimidated by your first two days when he lays down the law. He can come off as quite scary, however, he really is a nice teacher. He loves when you ask for help. He does have some pretty strict rules but they aren't hard to follow unless you're addicted to your phone. HE WILL CALL YOU OUT IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS. *!USE THE TUTOR!*
LOVE Donaho! He does put on a scary teacher act the first day or two, but he's actually really nice. He values people asking questions and doesn't think you're stupid for it. You do want to show up to every class because there is always new material to learn. Never went to the tutors, but heard they REALLY help!
At a loss for words. This man is an amazing professor and very encouraging. best teacher I have had.
Stephen was probably my one of the best professors I have ever had. He truly cares about the success of students. He will go over and over something until everyone gets it. Homework wasnt bad nor necessarily graded, but required In order to do well. Only 4 test. Hes hilarious always has jokes. May seem like a stickler at first but youll love him
Loved every day of logic with him. Tough grader and fair. Follow his rules to the letter and it works amazingly. he will not let you fail unless you try to fail. His dog friend Giddian is the best.
Requires you to buy his logic textbook (less than $10) which doesn't make much sense until you go over it in class. Answers any relevant questions during lectures. Lectures are very thorough, covering the topics very in-depth. Tests are exactly what are done in class and in homework. Don't skip homework. Grade is determined by a few tests.
Stephen is a really, really good professor. The class is all about active learning which doesnt sound very fun or exciting, and I agree with that, but its actually really helpful in his class. Ive never learned something so easily and well due to his active learning teaching style. Take good notes, stay active, andshow up. All you need to know.
Too much work for a 3 credit course, plus his grading is really tough. This course has made me really dislike philosophy.
Words cannot describe how great Dr Donaho is. He's a little scary during week one of class when he goes over his rules, but it's because he cares. The class is hard, but tutors are available, or you can get help from him during his office hours (like I did). Also, do the hw. I've never had such a caring instructor, I wish more profs were like him.
When I signed up for logic, the advisor warned me that some do not like him. I went into class a little intimidated by that, but I found that each week I was delighted to go to class as he turned out to be not only very informative and a true master at this topic, but had his rather funny moments that kept the class interesting.
Very unrealistic exceptions, tough grader, and lots of writing. He does not give enough feed back and those discussion do not help whatsoever. Wish I never took this class
Stephen is impossible. He takes weeks to grade the exams. He is not clear in what he expects before hand, but will give you all sorts of feedback after. What was good & what was bad. Hard to know exactly what he is looking for. As this is a ethics class & everyone outlook is different, I find it funny he says your view is wrong/unacceptable!
Took this class for generals. The grading on the tests is ridiculous, for the hours put in it isn't worth it for the grade received. Takes weeks to grade them, grades extremely tough. Don't get good grades on the tests, it will be tough to pass since he doesn't count all the discussions. Expectations for an intro class are way too high.
Stephen is a fantastic teacher of Logic. He's well skilled in the subject and his passion for it is absolutely infectious. He puts up a really strict act on the first couple days of class, but he's a really kind and funny teacher. 100% recommend him for Logic.
He is a great teacher! He explains clearly, lets you ask as many questions as you need (encourages them, actually). Understands that everyone learns on different levels/speeds. Takes suggestions for instruction to heart. I was part of the COVID-19 class & I wouldn't have made it w/o him going above & beyond-videos, notes, Zoom office appts, etc.)
Took his online course for a month. If he reads this, please update how you present your expectations with paper, assignments, and keep it consistent. Yes, he has a grading rubric for himself to mark up your inefficient paper. My biggest issue are the exams, each question has 2 or more question to answer, maybe separating each question would help!
Stephen is a little strange at first, he sounds incredibly strict and is very loud, however, he turns into a teddy bear as the semester goes on. It's very lecture heavy and if you don't attend a class you'll pretty much fail. However, there's only a couple tests and it's a very, very easy class to grasp and pass. I found homework "optional" as well
This was a nightmare to take during the pandemic. He expects you to read 3 different books as well as 10 pages of instructor notes weekly. No podcasts, no videos, no audiovisual. Felt like he made it "our problem" that school is online and did not teach at all. He expects you to read and figure it out. Do not take during the pandemic, so stressful
Prof. Donaho was extremely passionate about the subject and instilled that passion in his course. The reading load is MASSIVE and the subject matter is very easy to fall behind in if you're not careful. However, it was an incredibly fun subject to learn. Don't fall behind. Read everything. You'll do well.
Professor Donaho is a fantastic teacher. He explains hard concepts in a way that is easy to follow and provides plenty of detail. Synchronous classes were optional but very helpful, and he's also more than happy to help outside of class. You can tell he's really passionate about the subject and very knowledgeable. Interesting and challenging class.
I took logic after two failed attempts at pre-college math. This intro course is extremely hard, if you dont follow the reading schedule you will barely pass. I will give the professor credit for being super understanding and lenient with circumstances out of my control. Hes a nice dude. But be prepared to put in a lot of hours.
Overall, the class was ok, but it was a pain in the butt taking it over the summer and online. I highly recommend don't take this in the summer and online, class goes by really quickly hard to keep up, and a whole lot of reading. Got me stressed out for weeks D:
Out dated teaching style, reading more reading and more reading. Tons of writing with no feedback on discussions. It was a summer class so it was accelerated, I honestly liked that because I didn't learn anything anyway. The work load was more than a 4 cred pych class I was in at the same time. Not fun. Not engaging. Will ruin Phil for you.
I had Dr. Donaho for both Logic and Intro to Phil in the same semester, and it put me on the path of pursuing a degree in philosophy. He is incredibly knowledgeable and a great help if you're struggling. If you think these are easy "blow-off" classes, think again. I highly recommend that everybody take Intro to Phil under Dr. Donaho at a minimum.
Doctor Donaho is by far an outstanding ethics professor. He has extended knowledge on the field and welcomes any questions asked by students. He gives weekly instructions that you must follow in order to do well on the class. He gives about a week for the written exams, which consist of questions about material read. Excellent professor.
Very good professor when it comes to online. It is as if he understands that students have a lot on their plates already and offers little homework in exchange for lengthy exams, which is understandable. The exams, quite seriously, make your entire grade, so make sure you do good. They are essay open note, so not too hard.
Prof Donaho is amazing! Incredibly clear instructions and expectations. DO NOT get behind! I got behind a couple weeks and it is not worth the pain of trying to catch up. His instruction sheets are thorough, almost to a fault and he is always advocating for multiple different ways to get help and succeed in this course. I 100% recommend him.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE! Do it in person so you don't miss out on the lectures or else you'll be disadvantaged. DONT FALL BEHIND, you'll never catch up. it's so easy to stay on top of everything if you attend lectures and TAKE NOTES IN CLASS: a lot of practice questions are the same as some exam questions, easy answers. Hate math? TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is a good professor with clear expectations of the class. If you are taking this as an online summer course which is only 5 weeks, be prepared to read a lot. overall I think this class went very well and If you stay on track you will pass.
All of the material for his class is just so good. For me, it was very difficult to digest the material from the book. However, his instructor's notes helped me through the class. As long as you follow his notes and the book, you are set. Don't plagiarize also (duh, right?). I mean try not to ever do that even if unintentional.
Clear weekly instructions and detailed grading criteria to ensure you are doing the assignments correctly. All the weekly tasks help you to better understand the material and prepare for the essays, there is no busy work. Few tasks to do each week but a lot of time goes into reading and notes. There are only 5 essays and weekly discussion posts.
Dr. Donaho is THE BEST. He genuinely cares about student success and is passionate about the material he teaches (and helps students understand why they should care about it too). He sets extremely clear expectations and regularly emphasizes tools to help you not fall behind (and what to do if that happens). He's a great guy all around. 10/10
he grade without giving feedback, very harsh grader rarely communicates with student, and he just send them to tutors
His class structure is very clear and easy to navigate. This class does require a lot of time and effort but the skills assessments and quizzes will be easy as long as you stay on track. DO NOT skip any of the instructors notes, read every piece of material he gives you, ask questions when you have them, and attend class and you will do get an A.
it is a very time consuming class, but he is a very straight forward professor he will call you out if you are messing around but he never makes you feel guilty about asking questions even if they are stupid! he is very eager to help you and he wants you to pass his class
This class wasn't bad, but harder than it should've been. There are weekly discussions which aren't too bad. The 4 homework assignments throughout the semester can be a little tricky if you don't keep up with the weekly required reading. If your course load is high, this class can be difficult to manage. Lots of reading.
I have already graduated, and I've come BACK to this website to give a review. This professor is literally so funny, and tries hard to help every student understand the content. There are tutors, he has entertaining ways of explaining logic, and he got me to change my major form theatre to philsophy. I changed my major because of this one class.
Very hands off professor, had weekly instructors notes that were lengthy. No test, just 3 papers and a final course project. Lots of writing, don't fall behind.
Really enjoyed the class. He made a very difficult subject understandable. You do need to pay attention to the notes and do the discussions.
Very hard class. I do not like math and this was word math. I took this to avoid algebra, but it was really hard. You are really on your own with this class. All the learning is on you. Lectures are long reads and practice is imperative. You have to understand from the start. Good luck!!!
A lot of self learning. Long lectures. You have to understand from the start. Little quizzes, HARD exams, and all self work. He grades up which saved me in this class.
Tough but fair. Great man.
I took this class a few years ago and literally just came back to rate this professor. He is an amazing teacher and you can tell he loves the topics he teaches. It might be a tad difficult but I tend to wait last minute, start on your homework ahead of time and you will be good. AMAZINGGGGG guy. The reading material is interesting.
took early end PAPERS MAKE ENTIRE GRADE!! two 4 page papers + one final paper about 12 pages (10pts each) lowest grade dropped mandatory discussion posts each week that can boost grade (basically extra credit) no rubric, just specific formatting instructions and he says to be "clear and detailed" all assignments due by end of semester no exams
Manageable workload with just a few essays and discussion posts. Grading criteria is clear, and weekly tasks help you grasp the material. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep. Overall, a solid online class.
one of the worst professor's that I've ever had. I thought INTRO to philosophy would be fun, but it was immensely difficult (for all the wrong reasons, too). He doesn't grade anything until after the semester is over, so there is no way to improve. If you don't know what you're doing, you won't know until it is too late. He is VERY inflexible.
Gives intense readings. You are only graded on a handful of assignments which weren''t graded until late in the semester. I have some background in philosophy and was able to do everything without too much trouble but I could see this being very difficult if you are completely new. Course seemed somewhat narrow and eurocentric in focus.
Loved this class. Took this when the philosophy wing was under construction so it was all online. He gave us professors notes every week and studying was practically self-led. Weekly quizzes, and quarterly(?) skills assessments. His professors notes were very detailed, personally as someone with autism it worked out very well for me.
Didn't interact with him once, but his lecture notes were so comprehensive and his instructions for assignments were so clear I never needed to.
Really enjoyed the class and the effort he puts into it. You could tell he really cared about teaching.
