He's kind of awesome. As in extremely. Awesome. Extremely awesome.
Very friendly. Funny and excited to teach. Very approachable as well. Deff worthwhile to take his class.

I loved going to Professor Dyson's class. He has a great sense of humor, which makes the class interesting. He also has the cutest English accent ever. I learned a lot from his class even though I took it as a requirement.
Professor Dyson is my hero.
He is the best Poli Sci
Best professor at UConn.
love him! he makes going to lecture interesting and he is really knowledgeable in his field. he cares about his students and actually tries to help when you ask a question. he is HYSTERICAL
Great Professor. Take any of his classes and you will have a great time. Bad grads = you not coming to class and not having a clue. One of the best professors on the campus.
Best professor on campus, hands down!! Take one of his classes even if you aren't a POLS major. He's funny, hot, reasonable..what more could you ask for?!
A sound man. Gets everything across clearly and succinctly. Always willing to help and generally just a really good professor. 'Nuff said.
Best class ever. Definitely take it with him. He's hilarious, British, and really nice.
Good professor. Explains clearly the hard aspects of IR. Take him
Dyson's British humor is hilarious! He does a great job at getting across dry concepts in an interesting way. He relates the information to current events. I learned a lot! Midterms are take home essays with in class final. Great class, highly recommend Dyson!
Hilarious, funny prof, very high energy and will keep you awake. First few lectures lay the foundation for the ENTIRE class. Reading is almost completely unnecessary, until finals prep, and even then it's not too bad. Midterms are two take home essays and final is essays and IDs, written during the final exam period. Charrette is the best TA.
He might be the best professor on campus. He has so much energy and is very passionate about what he is teaching. He makes everything interesting, I actually wanted to go to lecture. The papers were reasonable and the final exam he prepares you well for
The most energetic and interesting teacher ever on campus! You would feel like you really want to meet him and go to the lectures. :)
He is the man! His class is my favorite this semester! Even though the class is a big lecture, you want to come to class because he is always joking around and is consistently energetic and excited about the material that he's teaching. Exams are easy enough and you are well prepared for them if you go to the lecture. Definitely take his class!
THE best professor I have ever had at UConn. Absolutely hilarious and super energetic. When students ask questions he literally bounces in place with a huge grin because he's so excited to answer. Take this class now!
Dyson is amazing. My friend had him for intro to IR and told me how great he was and I couldn't wait to take his class. This was a 3000 level but it was still really easy - no textbook! Readings are posted, they usually come in handy. One big paper for a midterm and a final exam of IDs and essay. He's a great prof! Take his class if you can!
Dyson is great. Funniest prof on campus! Class was easy, based off power points and online readings. Only comment - if you're expecting WORLD political leaders, you'll be disappointed. This is mostly US/UK leaders and an intro to the political science study of leaders. Still, pretty good class.
Excellent teacher. Engaging. MUST ATTEND LECTURE. Notes arent put up on huskyct. Two take home essays and in-class essay final. Easy class yet very challenging mentally. You will learn a ton. Totally reccomend this class. TA Salil Benegal is mah boy!
He is adorable!
He's really energetic and fun! The class wasn't that interesting, but the professor certainly was.
Dyson is great, very energetic. Your grade depends entirely on your TA since they grade everything, which kind of sucks since mine was much tougher than the other two. Dyson does manage to make very dry material interesting though and engage and entire lecture hall.
Dyson is great! Not much material to cover so class moves slowly, but he works hard to make it as interesting and clear as possible. Dyson is hilarious and adorable. He makes corny jokes and is very engaging. Grading depends COMPLETELY on your TA, so you should hope you have a good one and make sure to go to sections. Mine (Brenna) was great.
Dyson is one the best prof. at uconn. He is funny and engaging. He makes corny stupid jokes that are actually hilarious. The course is easy, the midterm was a take home essay. You dont really need to go to do well but you will want to go because he is the best. (Did I mention he is absolutley adorbale and has a british accent?)
Dyson is the best professor at UConn. Hands down.
Hands-down one of the best classes I've taken at UConn. Dyson is the man! He's funny, engaging, helpful, and understanding. This is one of the few classes that I would never dream of skipping. Highly recommend this course and prof!
Personally, I did not like the subject matter but Dyson is so energetic and friendly, it is really hard not to enjoy this class. He sets clear expectations and makes class super interactive (which is hard in a huge lecture). LOVED this professor! Exams are all essays so study for them!
Dyson is one of the most engaging professors at UCONN. If you get the chance, take one of his classes. You could probably skip and still do fine, but his class is too entertaining to skip. The class is more theory based than I'd like but Dyson manages to make it interesting.
This intro class was super easy - as to be expected when you're taking a 1000 level. I very rarely attended lecture, but when I did it was because Prof. Dyson is hott and has a wicked cool accent.
Professor Dyson is one of the best professors I have had and he may be one of the more charismatic people I have met as well. He has entertaining examples and surprising energy. A class with him is a necessity if it fits your schedule.
Very energetic professor, doesn't cover a ton of material but the stuff he does he goes really in depth on. Really easy class, you probably don't need to even go to lecture (although I recommend it, as it helps out a decent amount on the papers and he is very interesting)/
Professor Dyson is very enthusiastic, and he gives great examples to tie in with the concepts. In my opinion, his humor died off pretty quickly but he was still entertaining to listen to. Your grade is determined by two take home essays, an in class final, and participation in discussion. Easiness depends on your TA (mine was very easy).
Dyson would get off topic in an attempt to relate to the students. Some times it worked and helped clarify topics, other times it just made me more confused. He wants students to do well in this class. Doesn't try to trick you with grading.
He's just the most adorable, funny, British man with lots of energy and charisma. Although the content itself is not the most riveting, Dyson is so into it that as a student mildly interested in the subject, you get into it as well. Lecture really clarify the material but be sure to do the readings.
Professor Dyson is awesome. He's funny and can get a little crazy, but it always applies to the topic at hand (except when he makes jokes about his ex girlfriend). Lecture is important because that's where you get all the info, but it's not torture. Lecture is fun and the class is really interesting.
Dyson is an amazing professor and he's so adorable! His lectures aren't mandatory or too helpful but he def knows what he is talking about. There are two take home midterms and an in class final, where he gives you the study guide and takes termsquestions straight from there. TAs grade everything. FIND THE EASIEST ONE. Easy AB
Easy A. Never went to lectures.. Just went to the Friday discussions and got an A-. 2 take home essays, easy final exam, and 10% for your Friday participation. Easy Easy class. Some people really enjoyed his lectures, I found him to be a little too much energy for a 10 am. Take this class!!!
BEFORE YOU TAKE THE CLASS UNDERSTAND THAT ALTHOUGH DYSON IS AN EASY PROFESSOR YOUR GRADE DEPENDS ON YOUR TA NOT HIM. SO WHAT MATTERS IS HOW EASY YOUR TA IS. JUST SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
Dyson is a funny guy and makes lectures interesting. 1402 moves at a snail pace though which can get annoying, though if you show up to lectures and put effort into the two papers, you will do fine in the class. Overall, a good professor with boring course material.
Best professor I've had so far. He is hysterical and the most adorable man, but also a great teacher who keeps things interesting. I learned a lot in his class and it was often a real eye-opener. Go to lectures and discussion and you'll most likely get an A.
Don't graduate without taking a class with him. If you read the book and already took 1402 (Int'l Relations), you can probably skip most classes, but why would you? He's hilarious and makes the class fun. Make sure you submit decent writing for essays. Only in-class test was final and it was easy, he gives questions ahead of time.
Super knowledgeable about his subject. More stats involved than I expected. Class is based around long online readings, but all interesting if you're a PoliSci major or just interested in general. Covers wide array of subjects.
I took him for World leaders, the "World" was never really there. If you want to take him thinking this is going to be an IR oritented class, well it won't be. To be honest I really didnt learn that much in his class. There are 2 midterms 7-8 pg papers and a final essay exam. He's a nice guy but goes off on tangents quiet frequently. Pretty easy
Dyson is a funny and enthusiastic guy who seems to really care about what he talks about, which makes you want to care about it too. He assigns easy mid-term papers that don't take long to write if you go to class and pay attention. His lectures are based on his mix-tape, er sorry, book and they are very conversational.
One of the best professors I've had at Uconn. You don't need to attend class, just pay attention to materials he posts online and keep up with the 3 assignments. 2 papers for semester are only 5 pages each & topics are awesome. The 3rd assignment is ridiculously simple and the final was very easy since he gave a clear study sheet a week beforehand.
Great professor. His lectures can drone on. If you're into star trek and game of thrones, this class is for you. He uses those shows as a basis to teach polisci. Few essays (couple of them are part of a take home midterm) and a final exam which he goes over with a study guide. Easy stuff, and he can be entertaining.
Though Dyson is a bit spontaneous he has a unique teaching style that allows everyone to connect to the course content better.
Extremely energetic professor and he does loves those Sci-Fi-related texts and shows. The lecture itself is pretty entertaining because of his own good sense of humor. Two take-home midterms (both are 6-8ps papers) and one short essay-question final. They are not so hard as long as you go to the lectures and read the stuff. a good professor indeed.
He really knows how to get his students interested, talks kind of fast, but definitely a super intelligent guy. Learned a lot and enjoyed the class. The papers assigned are pretty long but as long as you do the readings you're fine. No tests, just papers. Would and am going to take another class of his.
One of the best professors I've ever had and I'm a very picky person. He makes theories so interesting and easy to understand. He gets really engaged with his students and makes a giant lecture feel more like a very engaging discussion. Didn't really have to do the readings but the book is actually very interesting and it's a bonus if you read.
Dyson always comes to class excited to teach/in a great mood! He connects the entire class to sci-fi shows like Game of Thrones and Star Trek. Only 2 papers with lots of options regarding topics. He uses his own book as the textbook and there's barely any reading (which you don't really need to do). Overall SUPER easy and highly recommend!
Dyson is a funny and interesting guy. Lectures are entertaining but not 100% necessary. Discussion is what makes or breaks you here. Two easy midterm essays and a final that is well laid out about a week beforehand. Easy class and decently interesting if you give it a chance. I'd take it if you need an easy Gen Ed to fill.
Very easy A. He only teaches about different international relations theories. Many people review him and say that he references sci-fi but really he uses sci-fi as a medium to teach the material. The class itself, while super easy and a definite GPA booster, isn't that interesting. But if you need a GPA booster this is a good option!
Dyson is great, he's passionate about the subject and loves to share his knowledge with students. However, your grade is entirely dependent on your TA. Mine was nearly blind and didn't speak English, so I didn't exactly trust her grading. I got a low grade on the final when I was certain that I knew the material, and never missed discussion.
Lots of energy. Experienced in his field.
DO NOT TAKE unless familiar with star wars/game of thrones/star trek. His teaching style relies heavily on using these three shows, and I felt like I was at a strong disadvantage and felt completely out of the loop having not seen them. Having said that, nice friendly guy with lots of energy.
Dyson is the best! The class is based of of sci-fi shows and movies and it does help to have the general idea of everything but you can get by without watching these things. Go to class because notes are super intensive but lectures are really fun and engaging. I definitely learned a lot from him. 2 take home exams and an in class closed note final
He's a really chill guy. He makes a lot of jokes in class, which makes lecture much more tolerable. He teaches IR with a twist and made it more interesting. You don't have to have prior knowledge on Star Wars and Star Trek or anything. Just do your best on the 2 papers; the exams are pretty easy. Watch the movies for extra credit. Good class!
Dyson makes this class really interesting. He teaches it in a way that leaves a lot of room for interruption . He digresses a lot in lecture, but is still pretty good, overall. Exams are all written essays- 2 take home, 1 final in class. Extremely easy, but I think the difference between a B+ and an A- depends on how your TA grades.
Grade 60% essays(2x30%), 35% final (4 short answer, 1 essay), 5% movie nights. You can't say this is an easy A because your ENTIRE grade is determined by the opinion of your TA. I'm relatively smart and my TA was not super easy or hard, so I was able to get an A, but unpredictable TA's could result in a lower grade even if you put in the effort.
I went in with no knowledge on anything science fiction. His approach to teaching is incredible... and you will learn a lot through a non traditional way of analyzing international relations. Such a funny, caring guy as well. Do the readings, go to discussion & the movies, and review the slides for an easy A. Great guy, even better professor.
This is an interesting class that is taught by an even more interesting teacher. At first I though the class was going to suck but it ended up being my best in the semester. The class is taught using science fiction but you don't have to be a fan to undersand the work. The class only has two 5 page papers, attendance and a final that are graded.
Professor Dyson did an amazing job adjusting the class to an online format. Every week he would make a few short (about 10 minute) videos covering the material for the week. Each video was super easy to understand and sometimes even hilarious. Then, in the live lectures, he would do an amazing job answering questions and clearing confusions.
I'm taking this class fully online and out of all my professors he handled the transition the best. He posts 2-3 short (10m) videos each week and answers questions live as well during lecture. He is funny, interesting, and you can tell he really loves the material. Highly recommend him to anyone looking for an easy, yet interesting class.
Dyson is a great professor. The lectures he makes are engaging and even funny at times. It is clear he cares a greatly about the content and his students! He can be long winded at times but his passion makes up for it. In terms of online format, the two biggest assignments are papers, and the rest is very light in content. 10/10
Overall this was a really great class, especially in the online format. The class is graded by a couple movie responses, essays, and a final, and so far the grading seems perfectly reasonable. The recorded lectures are engaging , really unique, and hilarious, he clearly puts a lot of effort into them.
Professor Dyson is a great guy that is a great teacher. He is easily assessable through email and he is very understanding. Class consists of lecture videos posted every Tuesday, a discussion about the videos and reading every Thursday and the only homework is about a chapter a week and participation
During online learning prof Dyson really made zoom enjoyable. He is so kind and genuinely cares about all his students. Even over zoom, he makes sure to personally address every student and make a connection with them. The class is mainly essays but the prompts aren't too hard and he gives you plenty of time to complete them.
Professor Dyson is such a fun and caring professor! The course consisted of weekly lecture videos and readings for homework, and Q&A sessions for participation. In terms of bigger assignments, there are 2 midterm papers, one final paper, and two quick movie responses with plenty of time to complete each of them.
Prof. Dyson made online learning not so awful. He worked really hard to keep us engaged and entertained, and you can tell how enthusiastic he is about the content. Class was entirely discussion based, so make sure you actually do the readings! Grading is mainly participation, two papers, and a simple presentation on a reading. I learned so much!
Prof Dyson is a really great prof!! He's really funny and made waking up early for his live sessions worth it. The only problem with the class is that the grading, I feel, is really arbitrary and i never knew why a certain grade was given. There are only like 5 papers that make up the entire grade and participation
A good professor, passionate about what he teaches. To me, something about him was so irritating and his teaching style is odd. He expects so much, but barely teaches anything. I literally learned nothing. Not only did the course make me want to change my major again, just hearing his voice made me want to drop out.
Dyson is a fantastic teacher and a great personality to have in class. His material is engaging and accommodating for online learning. Highly recommend!
You'll get a good grade in this class as long as you take the three essays you need to do (2 midterm essays and 1 final essay) seriously. We also had 2 movie responses that were easy. He has you get his book for the class and assigns readings, but you only really need to use it to get quotes for the essays.
Friendly, warm, passionate, flexible. Can be persuaded to open a test for all week. Works on 1st half of this course semester, then other instructor completes the other. Lectures posted Mondays or Fridays. Discussion hosted Tuesdays late afternoon. Assignments are participation & first test, other course assignments are in 2nd half of semester.
I personally find his teaching style questionable. The prerecorded lectures were funny and interesting that's for sure, but when it comes to the real-time lectures, a lot of the time was wasted as we were required to submit questions to counted as attendance, and many of the questions are not really that related to what they want in the exams.
Dyson is easily the best professor Ive had at UConn. I took POLS1402 and POLS2450 with him and he was so considerate of his students during the pandemic, he ended up changing the format of our midterm for 2450 to make it easier for us. He assigns readings but theyre not heavy and theyre pretty interesting if you actually read them!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT LIKE SCIENCE FICTION. The whole class is based on his book that compares sci-fi movies to international relations themes. It is all based on his opinion so most of the time it doesn't make any sense. Lecture slides were bare with little to no information. The discussion section was an utter complete waste.
Dyson is a man that radiates good energy. He utterly walked into class with his hands up waiting for applause. Constantly is looking for students for how they are feeling about topics. Open to any questions. Not graded on a lot of material, and essays are graded by TAs which makes them a little off. My best essay scored poorly. Enjoyable class.
Dyson himself was great, the lectures were a bit jumbled and not super straightforward so you might have to teach yourself a bit with his book/youtube. TA was terrible. Discussion sections were pointless and feedback on the limited assignments we had was inaccurate; filed a grade contestation each time and my grade went up 10+ points ridiculous.
Dyson is a very intelligent and humorous lecturer and the course structure is easy to follow and manage with other difficult classes. You are graded on five tests, the one with the lowest score gets dropped and they are always formatted the same way in multiple choice. All of the content is fun and easy to enjoy, take this class!!!
Prof Dyson's class is extremely easy if you show up to class and watch the lectures. The only grades are exams with the lowest exam grade being dropped. He also gives up to 12 points extra credit on your final grade by going to movie nights and writing a one page response. Dyson is a great lecturer and extremely entertaining. My grade exceeded 100
One of the nicest guys you're ever going to meet. Makes lectures entertaining while also clearly knowing his stuff. Exams can sometimes be designed to trip you up, but they aren't necessarily difficult either. Has clear respect for the students and TAs. Would 10000% recommend
Hes a pretty good professor, the course is a little boring but easy to learn. My one critique of him is his exams have way too many multiple choice questions that try to trick you, rather than actually test your knowledge.
Love this professor. He lectures in a way thats really easy to understand. If you show up and take notes, it's very easy to do well on the 5 exams (including final) throughout the semester. He drops your worst exam and gives 4 points (overall!!) extra credit for each movie night you attend and write a response for.
Don't get me wrong; it's a great class and Professor Dyson has a lot of passion for what he does. However, if you're taking this class to actually learn about International Relations, you're out of luck. I did not learn a single thing except for stuff relating to Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and Battlestar Galactica, but at least I had fun!
Dyson is a great lecturer but his slides were sparse. Your notes are what he says but he talks very fast. There were I think 4 or 5 exams throughout but lowest got dropped. They were a bit obscure but if you studied, you'll pass. I thought his enthusiasm was a little much but I appreciate him. Extra credit was movies that were hosted late at night.
He made class and learning fun!
Second time having Prof Dyson. My favorite professor at UConn by far. Clearly knows and cares about what he does. Makes his courses enjoyable and easy to understand. Prof Dyson clearly values the relationships he has with students and is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Always makes time for his students, even outside of class. 10/10 person
He is an Amazing professor, very charismatic and easy to speak with, overall a great human. Just know his class is based around science fiction and watching movies. If your not into watching movies for class then don't do it. overall best professor I've had in my first semester as a freshman.
Professor Dyson brings a unique flair to the class, blending international relations with pop culture references. While the content can be hit-or-miss, his engaging lectures and easy grading make this an enjoyable, low-stress course. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Used explosive diarrhea as a metaphor to explain the science of the atomic bomb. What more do you need to know?
He's a great guy, funny. You will have to put in the work for nuclear security. I spent about 20 hours studying for the midterm and got a 98
Straight up, the guy is one of the funniest and most charismatic professors out there. This is my 2nd time in his class and its been great, DEFINITELY RECOMMEND. workload is very reasonable and you have a ton of oppurtunities to ask questions in lecture. Overall, great first half of the course from a great professor.
