Steve is a great teacher. His classes are interesting & his take on the stories you read are informative. He encourages discussion & is very helpful outside of class as well as within it. He can be tough, bc he wants you to learn.
Professor Ersinghaus is a very dedicated and vibrant instructor. He imparts knowledge while seeking out the questions of whatever is taught, and encouraging his students to do so as well. He is fair and honest, although some, I suppose, may consider him a bit odd.

Very difficult class for me...he is a great teacher and makes you think but I thought that it was a hard class.
Very weird guy. Hard to understand his style of teaching. Would advise never to take his class unless you fall into the absract category, then you might have a chance. I recieved my my first D at the college level:(
He expects good writing because he loves to write but he's very helpful and funny.
An expert in his field. Prof. E. is not afraid to challenge his students to THINK for themselves. He's big into asking questions as a form of learning. I won't say his class is an easy A, but you will learn something valuable about writing and maybe yourself.
Fun and interesting and very challenging
At first I didn't quiet understand professor E but by the end of the semester I did. Although he's tough, he's willing to discuss, change, adapt etc. Since taking his course I believe my confidence and writing skills both improved.
great teacher, cool guy
Bad Bad Bad
Knows everything about British Lit.
silly
Steve Ersinghaus is the only bad experience i have had at tunxis. Throughout my schooling, I have never had a teacher like him. I truly think he doesn't care about his students and isn't passionate about teaching. He is cocky, can't look anyone in the eye and is intimidating and creepy. He randomly bangs on the podium and raises his voice
he refuses to help students. he is on a power trip and really thinks highly of himself. this was the only class i ever dreaded going to at tunxis and was afraid to speak up. he makes you feel very uncomfortable. and he also doesn't give you back your work
Steve is a really cool guy, and a great teacher for New Media. Him and Timmons are a great pair, kind of like the Odd Couple. I've heard they fail a lot of students, but only because they didn't do the assignments. If you just do the work, you'll be okay. I love the different style of teaching he has. Very helpful guy too.
he thinks hes smarter than he is. i have not learned NE thing from this man. he walks in completely unprepared to teach. he'll make the simplest concept seem so complex to make himself sound smarter n to try to confuse u. he barely ever teaches or makes sense. u have to teach urself n it sux. he wont tell u how ur doing or give u ne feedback.
Even Professor E can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. Learn how to read & write first, then understanding his methods are much easier.
He's not easy. He holds his students accountable for their work. He's a really nice guy and always very helpful when you ask for feedback, probably because he loves what he teaches. His class really helped me to take myself more seriously as a writer. Very influential guy. He has a good sense of humor too, if you get his wit.
Steve's a pretty cool teacher. It's obvious he cares a lot about what he teaches and he encourages critical thought and input from students. If you don't like to answer questions out loud, don't take his class.
Honestly, this guy is quirky. As a person: very interesting, would love to chat over a drink with this guy. As a prof: all I got was an excellent (if eclectic) reading list. I enjoyed all of it, up to the point that I received my first non- A grade. I think he grades subjectively, expecting more of some than of others.
grate professor
So, I just completed my BS degree. I was looking back on my writings. I found my best writing after Professor E.'s class; at the time I hated the class. Now, I'm happy I worked with him to make my writing better and ACCEPT feedback. He's felxible. I graduated, picked up my saved lit book, read Death of a Salesman. Lit is cool. Thanks Prof E.
he was a horrible teacher. he failed me even after i handed in all my papers. never take the contemporary fiction class. it is boring and alot of students skip it. i went to class everyday and i still got a D. HE IS A VERY HARSH GRADER!
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! I had him for english. I handed all my papers in, showed up in class, and for the final paper he gave me a D! THE WORST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER!
Ok, so he's intelligent, smart, and quirky but very harsh on the grades I must say. He doesnt make any assignments clear no directions nothing and then grades you poorly. I havent recieved the sememster grade yet but I'm worried. I did all the work but just found out I got a D on a major project! DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Professor Ersinghaus is the kind of teacher you see in the movies. He's tough. He grades tough. He challenges. But he's the best. He gives feedback, he forces engagement in conversation and discussion which is crucial in learning and for English majors. Ersinghaus is an amazing English teacher and he makes things exciting in the classroom!
He is funny, smart, witty, cocky, intimidating, intimidating , and interesting. He has a different teaching style, something that is "real" . He can influence you, if you understand the underline meaning of what he wants & hes kinda hot, in a way.
I hate this guy, but he is a good teacher. If you don't like the subject or aren't good at it, avoid him like plague. He is discouraging and Very rude. If you value inteligence over common curtisy and respect, you will be ok. Frued sez: If you like this guy, you are probly into some wweird things. PS, I think he wrote some of these reviews.
He clearly doesn't know how to be respectful to others and teach as well.
He's an awful teacher, I advise anyone who needs to take Comp 1 to avoid him. He doesn't help students and if he doesn't like you, he'll flunk you. I almost didn't go back to Tunxis because of him.
Not a easy teacher by any means, but if you pay attention, ask questions and do what he says you might actually learn something.
Prof. Ersinghaus is a breath of fresh air in the world of conventional teaching. He may "ruffle some feathers", but he isn't trying to inuslt, he is trying to inspire and encourage students to do their best. Think of him as an intellectual drill sergeant who will stop at nothing until you either give your best, or you give up.YOU make the decision.
If you're willing to keep up Steve is a fantastic teacher. He's a very hard grader but I honestly feel like I've learned more by taking two of his classes than in all of my other college classes put together. He's intense and he pushes you harder than you may like to be but it's way worth the feeling of accomplishment in the end.
Wow where to begin with Ersinghaus? Well first let me begin with the fact that I am an A average student. Yes I did learn a lot from his class, however I feel that he has two standards: fail or average. For those he feels are average you will receive a C or C+. So if you're willing to watch your GPA slip feel free to take him!
He's great but he's tough. Ersinghaus expects his students to be able to work at college level, and he doesn't waste time bringing students below that level up to par. If you know the basics of grammar and essay writing, Ersinghaus is really helpful for the thought and writing process. If you don't know how to write correctly, try an easier teacher
Very smart guy, not helpful in class. Impossible to gauge expectations, and feedback is ambiguous at best. You never know what he wants in a paper or how to really improve. You will learn a lot, but not from his assignments. Take him only if you don't mind a lot of anxiety and unexpected outcomes.
He is a very good teacher but he is very difficult to understand and he never gives clear directions. He would be a good debate teacher but I advise not taking British literature with him if it's not a subject that you know a whole lot about.
Unclear and not helpful. Worst professor I have ever had by far.
While he has a way with expressing his opinionand speaks well, he is unrealistic when it comes to exams. Never clear on grading or comments. Thinks too much of himself. Discussion is wonderful in his class but 3 exams make up your whole grade and the better you think you did the lower the grade. don't take his course if its important to your major.
Great teacher!
Taking comp II right now and really unsure if I'm going to pass. He gives you very little direction. Class time is used for him to talk at the class about nothing.
The worst english teacher I have EVER had!! Horrendous at giving clear instruction and spends the class talking about random topics. I should have dropped the class when i had the chance. Smart man, just a horrible at his job.
This professor lives in his own world. Expects students to write according to HIS rules. If you are a good writer going into his class you will feel like you are not anymore. He doesn't give grades throughout the semester and if he does it's on the ability based education scale. Very difficult to get a good grade in his class. NOT recommended!
Worst teacher I ever had. He's teaching methods are awful. The way he grades the work handed in is cruel. He is not a good teacher at all. I'm unsure if I will pass the class due to the way he is. He does not discuss anything English/Composition related to! NOT RECOMMENDED! Save your money. Worst , horrible teacher!! Tunxis needs to fix the issue!!
Such an awful teacher. Methods of teaching are all over the place. Grading ways are even horrible. Hate hate hate!! Save your money and do not take he's class.
Awesome professor! I had him for Comp II and he is tough but you learn a lot in his class. He pushes you to become the best writer that you can. If you just listen to what he has to say in class, everything that you need to pass is given to you. Great class.
He is a teacher who is intelligent and certainly knows the material well. But there is a problem in his class, (which he admits to)in regards to students succeeding. I think he should try listening to their concerns. I mean, isn't that part of being a good teacher?
Great guy and awesome teacher!
I am a student who has never had less than an A- in any given English course. I took Composition my Jr. year, and am taking it again now - should have been an easy course. However, Ersinghaus did not ever assign a paper with clear instructions and no grades were handed back. Unsure if I will even pass. Should have dropped.
Very intelligent teacher and classes fly by however you never know how you are doing in his class and when you ask he says you are improving but then gives you a C. I don't recommend him unless you are a published writer that being said I don't think Dean Koontz could pass his class with anything better than a "C".
This teacher goes off he beaten path with allowing the student to choose a research topic of interest. Your few grades are based on improvement which can put students into sheer panic. Getting an A is difficult unless you are already a strong writer. You need to put in a lot of effort and don't give up.
challenging but educates off the beaten path. A breath of fresh air.
Here's my final grades for the semester in where I took this class: Calculus: B+, Microbiology: B, Psychology: A, Art History: A, Composition II: D-. See anything wrong with this picture? Yeah. Also, his mid-term comment:Final grade, B. "Don't worry about passing, just keep showing your ability". No idea it was going to be this bad. Not reccomended
this guy is the worst comp 2 teacher ever.. his class is like an acid trip.. unless your published don t take him.. no textbook
He's very intelligent, and pushes his students to do better than they have before. He doesn't grade easy but don't give up and you'll improve immensely. Great teacher, great guy. Didn't feel like I was being talked down to for a change. Love him!
Going back to school at 37 was a dramatic turning point for me. Without his genuine, borderline radical way of educating students, and the enthusiasm he puts into his lectures, there is a good chance I wouldn't have the thirst for knowledge and education as I do. His class is tough. No doubt about that. In my opinion, he will never be forgotten!
If you are the type of student who wants an easy class, with an easy professor, and easy assignments don't take a class with Ersinghaus. He is a wonderful, intelligent, and fun teacher, BUT he is not your typical professor. He's different, and if you want to pass you have to SHOW UP and YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION AND LISTEN.
Would absolutely take him again. You are pretty much responsible for getting your work done on your own. He is not there to babysit you. Made something boring like poetry so interesting and I found myself looking forward to class.
I took his Survey of Lit Genres course and I have to say, it was a pretty awesome course. You basically read and discuss certain passages and stories. The tests are take home, short answer, and essay-based. As long as you pay attention, take good notes, and read consistently you should pass this class.
I took literature with Steve many years ago at Tunxis. Not only is he a wonderful teacher, I can honestly say that his class changed my life- probably more than any other. Steve's enthusiasm for literature always shines through and his wry sense of humor makes his lectures fun. I highly recommend him! Ed McMahon (Tunxis Class of '99)
He is a very unique teacher. If you want an easy A, do not take his class. He is enthusiastic and intelligent but he makes you work. It is your job to get your homework/projects done, he will not push you. Overall, just show up, pay attention and study.
Good professor, he definitely made the class interesting but you absolutely need to read the material and pay attention and take notes, if you miss class often or don't read, don't take this class. I should have been a pair of ragged claws Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.
Absolutely loved Professor's Ersinghaus' Comp 2 class. It was definitely one of the most entertaining classes and professor at Tunxis. His instructions are crystal-clear and you will only fail if you skip class and don't pay attention. Got 3/3's on all of my essays. Do the work and show improvement, easy A. Considering taking more classes with him!
So smart and funny. Just do the work. He lays it all out for you on his course website. Nice guy with a lot of energy.
He's just one of those professors that corrects you on any little mistake he's not very flexible as a teacher so if you want a good grade probably not the best professor to have. Definitely hardest grader I ever had usually on homework's I would get a 100 or in the 90's but with him I never got that.
I had him for Creative Writing. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. Very boring. I've read through his reviews & maybe he was going through some personal issues bc he was pretty much zoned out for much of the class and couldn't remember people's names. Feedback on writing was bad. I don't think he read anything I submitted tbh, but I got an A.
I didn't realize I sucked at writing till I had this guy most classes when it came to writing essays I did well in but idk the guy likes being a tough guy. He's just a negative guy always sarcastic I didn't learn a thing other then how to deal with stress. Even the student center could barely help me pass his class.
The class isn't that bad if it wasn't for the way he grades definetly likes the girls more in class then guys.
He tells you do good when you have a C in the class so much work and theres no reward in return even the student center could barely help me pass his class stay away!
Didn't seem to be much point in going to class, all we did was look at the news and partially discuss whatever article was assigned for reading. Kept saying that the grades online didn't matter but still used an incomprehensible grading system for a lot of things.
He is never clear on what you're going to be graded on, and never seems to have a plan for the class. Instead of talking about the readings we have to do almost every night he prefers to talk about the news and other topics that have nothing to do with the class. His comments on papers are not very helpful and do not make sense most of the time.
This professor thinks it's better to look at the news and talk about his life stories more than actually teaching us anything. It seems as if he thinks this class is a joke and a game with how he grades. He doesn't give any feedback on essays and you don't know your grade all semester. Has a bad sense of humor and is way too cocky for his own good.
Profesor Ersinghaus is a good teacher and you will learn from his class. He lectures a lot generally for all of the class time and he has you write a lot of papers. If you sit in the first few rows get ready to answer questions he has some may be strange and some may be personal. He is not very clear about grading or how you can improve.
The British Literature class was heavy based on lectures, which I found intriguing. There are some papers due although a lot were 86ed from the curriculum. The Professor is definitely a tough grader and requires you know the structure of proper essay, as should be expected. Spend time reading all the materials, you will genuinely enjoy it!
Professor Ersinghaus swears a lot, says inappropriate things and took me a while to get used to. He's hilarious, sarcastic and obnoxious but if you put that all aside you can actually learn a few things from him. He definitely picks your brain with his weird ways. Read all of the articles and you will do fine.
Class was hard. First month class was easy. Exams are extremely hard. All open ended you need to know literally everything in order to pass one of his exams. We used this online coding thing called Inform. It was super hard and made no sense to half the class.
I had this professor for Britt Litt 2. This professor was hilarious, if you get offended easily dont take this class. He loves to make jokes, and make lectures fun. The class in a way made no sense to me and he tends to go out of context, but overall as a person he is good. The class consisted of 3 ONLINE exams, that were easy if youre in class
Brilliant. If you enjoy reading and want to really strengthen your literary abilities - take him. I had him for Brit Lit 1&2, World Lit 1&2, and CW. I had the best time with all A's. He's even helping me with grad school apps, even though I'm not his student anymore. Go to his office and chat - this will help to better understand his expectations.
He spent most of class talking about politics and news that had nothing to do with our papers. He swears and is not pleasant during his lectures. We had a paper almost every week, and he did not guide us with any of them. You are expected to read the syllabus and attempt to do each paper based on his readings that he assigned. Hard grader.
I don't understand the low rating of this professor. He is always clear about what he wants his students to do and what the test would be on. If you truly work and show interest in the subject, you'll do good. Lectures are always interesting, and his sarcastic sense of humor is hilarious. Loved it.
Didn't know what to expect when i walked into this class. Heard from others this guy is a tough professor. He actually tells you exactly what he wants, Goes over what he wants 2-3 times, and is definitely available for help if you need it. Has a great sense of humor. All he wants is for you to be BETTER than when you walked in!
I was skeptical about taking Professor Ersinghaus' comp 2 class because so many people told me he was a touch grader and that I would not pass. I experienced the opposite actually. While he is indeed a tough grader, he lays out exactly what needs to be done in order to succeed in his class. He is also funny during lectures, so that is a plus.
Professor Ersinghaus is funny and incredibly intelligent. He is a tough grader, but with good intent. He pushed me to become a better writer and thinker in the short time I had with him. I really enjoyed his lectures and personality. Anytime he went off on a tangent, he always circled it back around and applied it to the subject matter. 10/10
This class has been one of the hardest college courses that I have ever taken. You are bombarded with work every single week, he will take forever to return your emails, and the grading is very unfair. This class has caused so much unnecessary stress. Would not recommend. Ever. Trust me, you will get overwhelmed very quickly. I did not expect this.
Before taking this class I've read others comments and didn't listen. PLEASE listen!! This class was unnecessarily hard for no reason.
If you like your grade being solely dependent on your final paper then take this class. If you also prefer spending money on a class where your Professor would rather talk about everything except writing, this class is for you. I don't want to seem biased. Some of Professor Erisinghuas's lectures were fun but not educational.
he wrote his own book, gives horrible directions no leeway everything is done once NOT CLEAR AT ALL
Please do not take this professor!! I do not suggest him to anyone!!
Before his class I dredged through my writing assignments with a sense of despair. I became a much more confident and active writer after taking his class and after accepting his tough but fair grading policies and feedback. He genuinely cares that his students improve as writers and will work with you if you take the time to work with him.
Worst professor I've ever had. Isn't helpful and his blackboard layout is very confusing. I dropped his class and when I signed up the following semester, I picked a different professor but that professor ending up leaving Tunxis and it automatically changed BACK TO HIM! I was devastated and had to once again drop the course.
I took this class as a fully online 7 week course. I the work load was tolerable but when it came down to grading he's horrible. Got a 9/15 for making ONE grammatical error on a paper. Literally no other comments on the paper. Either he grades hard or he doesn't justify his grades. Never actually got any helpful feedback on my papers.
Within 3 days of the class starting, he told me to drop it because I asked him a question about the syllabus. He said that if I didn't understand how to read syllabi, I should drop the course.
