he stiUnfair teacher!!! i had class once a week and he told us we could get out early if we didnt have a break in the middle of class but kept us past the allotted time!! Didnt except things late from those he didnt favor, but did from others. not fair with test grading!
very knowledgeble. Fair.
just the worst teacher in the world don't take his class
excellent. knows how to teach this class. The best!
I can not believe that the school still submits students to the torture of Steve Fries. He is the head of the of the Hospitality department but doesn't know the meaning of the word. He talks about being in the field for 30 years at excruciating length yet possesses none of the necessary skills needed to be efficient in the hospitality industry.
Prof. Fries Intro Hositality class was great. Found him to be an excellent teacher and used his industry experiences well. Many people in class were rude, always coming in late, not prepared and sure are not going anywhere in the industry with their attitudes. If you want to learn, he is the best!
brilliant! challenging but fair!
I took his class which started out with about 29 students in the class; when I dropped his class 4 were left including myself. He is grandfathered in and cares about nothing. Dont take this class if your are not an accounting major or if this is your first accounting class.
This professor just sat down for a three hour class. He did not keep anyones attention! You would think that Marketing was easy but, I feel sorry for those that didn't hand in any of their homework. Terrible class! Would never take Marketing again!!
This is the worst professor I ever had. He basically sits there & expects you to teach yourself the material. He gives lots of homework and does not go in depth with the book. He has a very bad attiude and is not helpful at all. This class was a nightmare! Shame on Gateway for still having him there! He is a miserable man that wants you to fail.
Worst teacher ever bar none.
flunked other accounting profs twice. He made me learn and finally pass. Challenging but fair.
knows his stuff! If you don't want to do the work don't take him. If you want to learn he is the best!
I got the grade I deserved. Many students come to class expecting not to do the work and pass. WRONG! Fries is tough but you will learn...isn't that whay college is about?
Will spend the time with you if you are willing to do the work. Will not deal with laziness, so make sure you do the work. He will teach you if you want to learn, if not take another class that you won't learn a thing
great teacher. each part of course is worth 20% so is you do the work and try you can't do bad.Comes from industry and uses real examples, not just boring book
Great teacher, but most students don't want to learn. He is wasting his time at Gateway. He deserves a better school where students want to learn and are respectful. Gateway students are childish, rude and lazy! I had to get out of there and go to a school where I am not felt like an outcast because I want to learn.
Professor Fries isn't for those who are lazy! He expected me to do the work which I fought at first, but then realized that is the only way I was going to be able to understand accounting.
Love him or hate him, he does make you learn the material.
Great!
Perfect!
Save your money. He will only pass you if you do good on his final. Any other work he gives you doesn't matter. All that matters in his class is the final.
He kept me on my toes. You need to come to class to grasp the material. He is fair and wants us to learn. Some students just come to class expcting miracles.
He kept me on my toes. You need to come to class to grasp the material. He is fair and wants us to learn. Some students just come to class expecting miracles.
I will not encourage anyone to take this class if it's their first time doing accounting. You will have a better chance of understanding him if u taking accounting before
I had to drop this class because of personal issues. Prof. fries was most helpful and understanding. He encouraged. Me to continue with school when I got my life back in order.I enjoyed his class although many of the students wasted his and my time by not being prepared. He is a great teacher if you want to learn.
Great course about the basics of hospitality mgt. Knows his stuff.
Don't waste your time. I worked too hard to deserve a C. I did not even miss a class, home work or test. Very upset.
He's not a very good professor. He doesn't give a clear understanding of accounting and he's intimidating.
NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! For a hospitality teacher he is rude and unyielding. I would never take any of his classes again.
Great teacher. Loads of real life experience.you have to come to class and do the work to do well.
Do the work and you will do well as I did. Unfortunately, many students in the class should go back to high school. Prof. fries teaches at a college, and many students Come to class with poor attitudes.
should not be allowed to teach
Great teacher. Took the summer session which is intense. Lots of work but I learned the material because of the amount of homework and class problem. Tests are fair and cover exactly what he said it would. I would take other classes with him.
Great class. Students who came to class learn lots about the hotel and food business. Many students waste the classes time when they are always not prepared.
If you go to class and do the homework, you will learn the material. He answers questions very well and is very knowledgeable. Make sure you attend class and do the HW!! I highly recommend him if you are a serious student, if you aren't going to take the class seriously, don't bother taking it at all.
Great professor. He does not spoon feed those who still have a high school mentality. Do the work and you will succeed, don't do it and you will drop or fail.
I personally can not recommend anyone to take this class. It was 1 of my worst classes at GW. I asked a question in class and he said "I wasn't paying attention" and never answered and he doesn't give back test. The only thing positive I can say is I like how we got to work w/ other classmates. Your going to need a tutor & a prayer if you take him!
The most worthwhile course . It should be a required class. Being placed in an internship site enabled me to see if I really will enjoy the accounting environment in the real world. The weekly logs required, gives me a portfolio to show prospective employers. Sharing our experiences in class was great. Prof. fries was super. Take this class!
Took the 5 week summer session...intense but learned do much and have applied the knowledge at my job. Prof. Fries is straight forward and knows his stuff. I attend a 4 year school and his quality of teaching is better than those at my home school. Take him for this class.
You teach yourself the material as a "homework assignment". Typical class is him telling (not explaining) the answers to the homework then he assigns more homework. NO actual teaching goes on. He also is very disrespectful in the way he speaks to students.
Great teacher. Expects students to do the work. Test are fair and he tells you exactly what to study.
The internship was the best course I have taken. It brings together the classroom and the real world. I was offered a job too. the classes when we met were great because each of us charged what we learned. Prof. Fries is a great and knowledgeable teacher.
I took this class in summer session as a visiting student from a 4 year college. Prof. fries is an excellent teacher, much better than the prof. I had at my school and failed there. Do the work and you will do well.
He is a knowledgeable person in the area of accounting but as a professor is not very good. He speaks so fast that if you take your eyes of him to read in your book what he is reading you will lose him. He sends a lot of homework seriously the work is too much is like learning accounting by yourself. Avoid him.
A great teacher who does not put up with immature nonsense. If you want to learn, he is fantastic. If you don't want to do the work you will fail. Many students in my class were rude and never prepared.
Straight forward. He is an excellent teacher . If you are willing to do the work, you won't have any problems with his class. Most students in my class are lazy, disrespectful, unprepared and immature. Many come to class not prepared and not willing to put in the time necessary to succeed. Typical of Gateway students.
The most valuable class in the program. The internship landed me a job for the second paid part and probably a career opportunity beyond the class. Professor Fries was instrumental in placing me and encouraging me.
Great professor. Don't slack off. Lots of homework, but necessary to understand the material. Several people dropped, but I guess they didn't want to do the work. Many students couldn't do basic math and had a tough time. Be prepared to do the work and come to every class..
I just finished the five week summer session. Great teacher. I learned so much. Lots of homework, necessary to understand the material.
he is very disrespectful, if homework is late he won't take it. doesn't go over your grades. he is such a mean guy in general and he is very rude. Don't take his class
For someone heading the "hospitality" dept, Fries is a lousy choice. Having worked in the industry I would fire him from any position working with the public. Also working in the school - I have never in my life seen 1 teacher be so publicly rude and put SO MANY students into tears, yet consistently have a list of excuses ready for his bad doings.
The internship Prf. Fries placed me at landed me a great job. Prof. fries goes above and beyond to help if you are willing to help yourself. He won't put up with excuses and immature behavior.
This class was tough but I Learned so much. Many students dropped because they didn't come prepared to class and didn't take past students advice. professor Fries gave out letters from students who took his class with suggestions on what to do to get a good grade in accounting. He is fair and doesn't put up with excuses.
This class was very hard, but you definitely will learn your subject. I will this class with him again. He is not a easy A you really have to work for it
Great professor. Material not easy but he does a good job exposing the complex book.
Basically, he just reads answers from the answer key. He doesn't write anything on the board unless something isn't found in the text -handwriting isn't readable-. Very cocky and undertoning rude. ALWAYS goes over the homework. Goes too fast going over questions. You really don't learn from him, you self-teach from the text. I wouldn't recommend.
Excellent! Professor Fries expects students to do the homework and come to class. Isn't that why you go to school? Many students in his class don't come prepared, don't have the book and have poor attitudes.
Does not teach. Sits at his desk and makes you work in groups to figure the work out on your own. Tests are long and hard. Your grade is based on 3 tests and a final. Gives tons of homework and goes around the room to have you answer them. Does not explain things and always rushes through any questions you may have. Do not take him!
I learned lots from Prof. fries. This was the second time I took this class. I failed the first time. He was much better than the teacher I had the first time. That teacher didn't give enough work to make me understand the work. Prof. fries gives lots of homework and calls on you to answer homework questions. He tells you what to study for tests.
Comes from industry so he knows the business. Great real life examples. The reports were helpful to understand what goes on in the hospitality business.
He mostly just sat at his desk and never got up. He speaks really fast and it's hard to follow what he says, especially since he doesn't write any notes on the board and he doesn't use power points. The class is 95% verbal, so it's very hard to grasp the concepts he talks about without any visuals. You basically have to teach yourself.
Excellent teacher. If you do the work and come to class, you will pass.
Best class ever! The internship should be required of ALL students. I learned so much and was able to use the knowledge I learned in other classes. The best part is I was offered a job! What more could I ask for?
I learned lots in this class. Be prepared to do HW a must to understand the material.
The internship class landed me a great job, thanks to Prof. Fries.
Took this class in the summer. Lots of work in a short time, but I chose to do it. The only frustration was having to deal with several students who were never prepared and still didn't have the book at the end. prof. Calls on everyone and I got tired of having so many students asking what page, what problem, I didn't get to it. , etc. .
He expects too much of his students compared to his very minimal teaching. Has no concern for student comprehension, and claims his bad penmanship is the reason why he refuses to show any examples on the board. Only time he leaves his seat is to walk in and out of class. Your attendance is mandatory but his isnt. 100% verbal class. DO NOT TAKE.
Love, love, love this class. I love working with numbers, He expects a lot from his students but isn't that what we are here to do?
Good industry experience. enthusiastic about topic. I like the assignments using trade magazines.
Good class that goes over the different careers in hospitality. Teacher has great experience in the business. Attendance important cause you could miss unannounced quizzes. Not a hard course.
Superb teacher, but be prepared to do lots of work. He knows how to teach this subject and expects students to do the work. I feel well prepared to take the next accounting class.
The class should be required for all. I learned more from the experience at the business than in all of my classes. Teacher is so helpful. He gave lots of leads for the externship. He knows so many hospitality people.
The class should be required for all. I learned more from the experience at the business than in all of my classes. Teacher is so helpful.
He actually made students feel uncomfortable enough to not ask questions & he never asked if students had any questions. I asked him a question & he made me feel like I'm stupid. If you take this course you have to learn on your own because he barely explains things. I really feel like you should teach so students understand and pass, not fail!
I went for help during office hours and he was very helpful . Lots of work but I learned so much Accounting. His style is very structured. Dont expect it to be like high school.
French Fries here loves to skim through the chapters, doesnt go in-depth, does not teach the material, and can become very demeaning. 10/10 would not recommend.
Excellent prof. You do need to do the work. He wont spoon feed you. Accommodating for extra help at his office hours. Tests are fair. He tells you what to study.
Great course for all to take. He places you in a business where you can apply the skills learned in many of the classes. Professor Fries cares about your future. The logs are a good tool for the future. Nice person too.
Clear Professor did not want to be there. Taught strictly from textbook, turning page by page. Sat entire class - 3 hours each night. Never wrote or gave examples. Did not encourage or want questions to be asked. Very demeaning. Class had 14 students at start - 7 withdrew. Terrible professor and person.
Excellent teacher, that is if you wish to learn. He gives lots of HW, but it made me learn and it helped me do well in the next acctg. class. Many students who dropped out didn't do the work. Buy the text book ad read it, not the online version. Highy suggest Fries.
Love this class. He has a wealth of industry knowledge and lots of contacts for jobs. Wants us to learn and be successful. The real life samples are interesting and helpful. Each part of the grade is only 20 percent each, so no one part can kill your grade. Cant wait to take his other classes.
Learned so much. Lots of experience in the hospitality business. No nonsense teacher. great prof.
Lacked the teaching qualities that i need to learn. Very monotone, did not seem like he wanted to be there, and rude if you need to leave early or didn't understand the homework. He wrote on the board maybe 2 times out of 6 classes for about 10 minutes. No visual learning. I put in the work at home, and went to class to be lost again.
Took his summer school class online. So much better then my home school professor. He communicated with me when I needed help. Lots of HW to do, and it forced me to understand the material. Wish he taught more acctg. Classes.
I took the class during COVID and decided the more structured way was the live remote format rather than online was a better option for me. It was like being in class but not in a room with others. He was caring and encouraging. Although attendance isnt mandatory it is important to go to class.
I took the summer class online. Professor Fries gave specific information to follow and the percentages of exams and HW that he uses to come up with grade for course. He was willing to assist when necessary. If you arent committed to setting the amount of time necessary to do the assignments you will fall behind.
He is a much better professor than my home school. Organized and spelled out everything on the syllabus.
I took this class online, so it was hands-off. Not much Prof Fries can do but assign the modules and answer questions if you have any. I found the class to be relatively easy, but I can see why some people have a hard time with it. It's all done on Pearson. Make sure you do ALL the homework assignments. That's where you're going to really learn.
Extremely helpful. Always responded quickly. Learned a lot. I highly recommend Prof. Fries.
Knows his stuff from years of industry experience. Nice person.
Great lectures with real examples from his extensive experience. Gives good career advice.
Worst Professor I ever had. If he calls on you and you dont know it he makes you feel bad for it. He expects everyone to be on the same page and does not teach at all. Rude and unprofessional thats why many people withdrew.
taking a class online with this professor is the worst thing to do to yourself. this professor is not at all understanding of your internet issues, and giving extensions is not apart of his teaching ability. scratch that... stated in his syllabus it says he just records the grades. he doesn't even teach. I wish I could give this professor a -10.
Professor Fries was not a good professor at all. I took a two-week course over the winter and it was a terrible idea. We had to do online assignments with no guidance and there was no material to go off of. When I confronted him about my grade before the final exam, he said even if I did get a 105 on the exam I would still not pass. terrible class.
Nice guy and knowledgeable. Follow the syllabus and do the work is the way to go.
Lots of experience. Good real examples. Interesting projects and contacts for jobs.
First online class for me. Just follow syllabus and timeline and use the tools on MyLab and you could do well. He responded to my questions fast.
Took LRON ratter than total online. Much better experience for me. Prof. Fries spells out exactly what to do to pass course. He highly recommended to buy the hard copy of book in addition to ebook and it is well worth it. He expects you to come prepared. Good prof.
Great prof. No fluff. Do the work and it will be a breeze. You do need to know basic math.
Unrealistic expectations. Do not take this course with this professor.
You can follow the complete guidelines of the syllabus read all the book and still struggle. Not a good professor as you are on your own. the only reason i learned anything at all was because of the My Lab as it actually explains step by step. if possible do not take this professor. As paying students we deserve better.
Took online. He was always willing to help if needed. Lots of work but that helps learn the stuff.
the worst do not take this course
Very structured. Come prepared. Very willing to answer questions.
Learned a lot, lots of work. Need to do the HW to understand.
Lots of work but it is o.k. Since helped me understand accounting. Nice guy. Helpful answering questions.
No nonsense professor. He expects you to do the work and participate.
Just finished summer intense online class, the HW was a lot but wasn't too bad and helped me understand the course. He communicated every week with helpful reminders. For the most part your on your own to get the work done. If you need help there is the ask instructor feature on Connect.
I gotta kicked out of class for accidentally cursing with an unmuted mic. He really hates cursing. I'll update this rating after I finish the class. If I didn't, then I didn't get let back in. teaching style: (Very formatted. Just follow with the book. Light studying, heavy practicing)
Great class. It was a live remote course. Answers questions quickly. If you do the homework and ask questions it isn't a hard class.
The professor runs a structured class, but it's a lot of work. Attend lectures, do the homework, and use resources like unstuck study to stay on top of the material. Not the easiest, but you'll learn a lot.
Lots of work. Come to class. Helpful no nonsense professor.
Took summer class. Lots of work in a short time. Doing the homework is a must. Online class, you are on your own but he was good at responding to questions.
Enjoying this class. Prof. Fries is a no-nonsense teacher. Explains well and is pleasant. It is an LRON class, the best of regular classsroom and totally online. He requires the hard copy of book in addition to ebook, but that is very helpful. I want to take his other course.
Easy but need to keep up.
