Stuffed shirt, and kind of anal about a few things but a good guy. There were times when he'd flip out and really act like a jackass in front of the class. Worth it to see that creepy drawing of his wife on the can at the end of the quarter. He was a major

He talks to much in class about lecture for too long. He is nice when he wants to be, but sucks in trying to working something out with you. His project are interesting but he over do himself by giving you 2D working that dones not fix the profile. Its like its really meaut for color theory. if you take him good luck, just stay up.
his class was my favorite. i learned a lot about design, and his projects weren't that hard. if you try, you'll do fine. overall nice guy too.
projects are a bit tedious., but he's a funny guy. Ask about his snoop dog joke. (also if u dont miss any classes he'll give u some candy)
Awesome-ness!!! He's a lil dorky overall, but really fun, and he's always excited about the projects that were doing. still please be real tedious in your work to make sure your craftmanship is perfect because I was never able to get above a 94 in his class. He gives gifts if you go to all his classes and you make a really AWESOME final project!!!
Stephen is wonderful! I love his class and the random stories he tells about his family and life experiences!! He's really fun, but beware, he has high expectations for his students. I definitely recommend him and wish that he taught one of my classes for next quarter.
I absolutely loved Stephen! He is so nice and very clear in his assignments. He's very picky about craftmanship and little things, but it's to be expected. I definitely would recommend him. His projects are a bit tedious but are interesting! No text req. final exam a breeze! I got a 100 on it and made it out with an A in his class. great guy!
I love Prof. Gardner. He is amazing. He tells you random stories about his family and his experiences. He is just fun to listen to and he always has a smile on his face. I wish he could teach all my classes. He makes 2-D fun. He is clear in what he askes but beware he loves good craftmanship.
2D, projects took too long (at least i did), CRAFT is EVERYTHING for him! so be very precise about that, he is a very nice person, love the funny stories about his family, miss him as a teacher even though i see him when i am going to 3d. Do not be late cause you were at bobby's for his class, he got really mad at my class for that.
I really enjoyed his class. I had terrible craftsmanship when I started, and I learned so much. Yes you will spend gratuitous hours and sleepless nights on these projects, but it will pay off. Start early on projects and ask for a lot of feedback. Do what he tells you an you'll get an A. Also a very funny and personable guy. :)
Professor Gardner will certainly be a memorable professor! Not only is he extremely friendly and funny, but his projects are interesting and always allow for a lot of individualism. You'll work hard but he's a fair grader and project redos are accepted. His personality made attending the dreaded 8AM class worth it!!!
Had him for 2D. He's very nice and personable and his class was never intimidating. The work seemed to take an obscene amount of time, but in retrospect it wasn't THAT bad. He's a stickler for craftsmanship and clean edges seemed more valued than great concepts, but the class taught me exactly what I needed for future courses. Recommended.
2D Design-Great teacher! Nice guy, always helpful, keeps class entertaining with cheesy stories. Not a very harsh grader. Fun class!
2D Design-Great teacher! Nice guy, always helpful, keeps class entertaining with cheesy stories. Not a very harsh grader. Fun class!
Great drawing teacher if you had never draw before! He focuses on composition and value of the piece and is VERY helpful. You draw from toys and plastic insects to classmate's profiles and perspective still life. He is also very nice, funny and shows interest in his students and their work. I would take him over and over again if I could.
Mr. Gardner is a really good teacher. I have drawn before, but I still learn a lot in his class. You can tell that he really loves to teach and cares about his students. He is great at letting you know what you need to do to make your work better. Good at giving each student one on one time.
He's very laid back and very nice. If you are having problems he'll help you out or show you what you can do to do better. He occasionally tells some funny stories. Pretty nice guy.
Prof. Gardner is a great guy, who will always give one-on-one time with his students. He goes over many of the core skills needed to create successful drawings. For experienced artists, he will challenge you further than students who do not have such a strong background, as that is exactly what happened to me. And I appreciated it.
Gardner is extremely helpful, nice, and positive. Even if a drawing is incredibly disastrous, he will spot the beauty in it. In that sense, he is an easy grader. He will compliment more than ridicule, but will always let you know how you can push your drawing to the next level.
I loved him! I've been drawing forever and I still learned a lot. He is very funny and has a great personality. He took us on field trips and we had lots of fun subjects and cool projects.
best drawing professor! you should really take this class.
Awesome professor!!!!!1!! He is really kind and funny. If you have any problems, he will help you. The projects are so fun and amazing! take this professor you wont regret it.
Best professor ever! I really learn a lot from him! his class is fun and really helpful.
BEst professor ever! I really learn a lot from his class. He is supper nice and helpful and he is Hot! TAKE this professor!
Super nice, great energy, great attitude, so positive. He's happy all the time and he's an excellent professor. The BEST I've had at SCAD. Highly recommend. Those pretty blue-grey eyes are SEXXXY LOL!
Professor Gardner is extremely nice and really funny! I love how his numerous anecdotes always relate to a point he wants to demonstrate to the class.
Very low workload, projects are a little basic but you still learn alot of skills from him. He will always help you and give suggestions how to edit it. Very talkative, does not give a lot of homework BUT you have to cary gigantic portfolios. Otherwise, a good teacher for people who are not very good at drawing.
Excellent professor. I would absolutely recommend him. He greatly improved my drawing abilities and deserves all the praise I can throw at him. Very clear and easy to understand. He genuinely enjoys the classroom and makes being a student enjoyable too.
He's a nice guy!
Such a nice guy! The work load is very manageable, and he really wants to see you do well and improve. He works well with so many different types of people. He grades fairly and never aims to make anyone feel bad about their drawings. Highly recommend.
Professor Gardner is a character. He has long winded, sometimes pointless stories, that always end up making two hours of straight drawing seem to fly by. I've never taken a drawing class in my LIFE and he has helped me become actually GOOD. Ask for help when you need it - he'll give it to you and more. Work for the grade, and you'll get it!
This man is amazing. He is the best teacher to have as a first quarter SCAD student. He explains himself very well, gives really great, easily understandable feedback, and becomes really good friends with the students and tells great stories. I HIGHLY recommend him.
He's very engaged in the class, and cares that you're doing good work. I did spend a lot of time on my projects, but it isn't unbearable. I enjoyed taking his class and would definitely take him again.
I had Gardener for Drawing 1 and he was amazing! He's very funny and super friendly. I'm searching for the classes he teaches since he is so helpful when you do ask for help and is an amazing teacher. He does expect you to put a lot of work into your big projects but he gives you plenty of time to do it.
I loved taking this class! Mr. Gardner is really chill, really funny and a really good teacher. The projects we did in class inspired me to branch out and try some other things and make good art.
I really enjoyed his drawing 1 class. The work load was very manageable, and the projects were good. He always finds something nice to say about everyone's piece during a critique no matter how bad it actually is, so I would definitely recommend taking his drawing 1 class if you struggle with drawing.
No matter what your skill level is, Gardner is a great professor to take. He helped me to improve my drawings, and for people who didn't like drawing, he helped them through anything they were going through. He really loves his subject, which is wonderful.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS CLASS! Prof. Gardner is a great professor. Always there to help, offers extra credit. He wants to get to know you, very talkative loves to talk about his family. His lectures are short, which is nice because it gives you plenty of time to work on your projects in class. WOULD HIS CLASS TAKE AGAIN!
Stephen Gardner is an all-around wonderful teacher AND friend. His class was so amazing! I'm a film major and was so worried about drawing but he was so helpful and so clear 100% of the time. I actually got good at drawing! After each project he'd tell you how to improve and how to go further. Also, his stories are amazing. Definitely take him.
Such a great man with so many great stories to share!
Over all he's nice. However, his demos can sometimes be boring if you already know how to draw. He doesn't judge you based on your art skill and he will find a way to improve your drawing. He sometimes talks about stories but meh, hes pretty chill. The workload is pretty normal in the beginning and gets a bit heavier.
I would take classes with Professor Gardner a thousand times again! If you're looking for an easy A this is NOT you're class. He will make you earn your A's working hours for a project, giving you feedback and being very kind. You will learn ton in his class from drawing tips until important painters. With patience and professionalism he taught me
One of the kindest and most helpful professors at SCAD. His goal is always clear: he wants you to make the best drawing you can possible make, and I've been surprised by my hidden potential in a medium I never tackled before. Excellent professor.
The day I see a bad review about this awesome professor is the day I'll stop using this website.
Gardner is probably one of the nicest people I've ever met, his enthusiasm is infectious and it's hard not to love him. I took his sketchbook class which is really fun and I can't recommend it enough. He always finds something nice to say in critique, but his grading is a bit tough. He encourages thinking outside the box and use of different medium
Awesome professor. Projects are insanely fun, engaging, and insightful, class seemed even shorter when working on projects. Would definitely take again.
He is genuine and overall great guy. He is clear about assignments, will work with you. Give great lectures at start of each assignment and will demo techniques. You will use a variety of papers and materials. Critiques are fair and interesting. Favorite professor so far, also humorous.
Honestly my favorite teacher EVER. His projects are fun and engaging and he himself is very funny and fairly understanding. The projects I did in both of his classes (Drawing 1 and 3D Design) are still some of my favorite work.
I took Stephens class my first quarter as a freshmen. I have never taken a drawing class before this and Gardner was very understanding and helpful! His feedback is specific anc he only wants to see you succeed. Prove you are putting in the effort and you will pass! Def one of my favorite professors so far!
Gardner is a great professor! You can tell he really enjoys teaching and helping out his students. He has even made multiple different kinds of charcoal for his DRAW classes. He may seem a bit demanding at first but you'll find that the nature of your drawings and projects should purposefully take time and he wants you to succeed.
Spends one on one time with every student in class, emails back in a timely manner, genuinely cares, is extremely clear with what he expects of you, has interesting stories. I cant really imagine a much better professor.
Gardner is a genuinely caring professor who is understanding of the students experience with drawing and mediums. Always takes time to have one on one with all students. Time flies by in his class!! Definitely recommend for freshmen!
its my first year here at scad, and gardner is my favorite teacher. he's so friendly and he takes time out of his day to get to know you and talk to you, which is super important to me. his critiques are helpful and i never felt overloaded with work. he talks a lot about his life and his kids, which can get in the way of class but i liked him a lot
This professor is amazing. His teaching style is awesome, his attitude is awesome, and his work is awesome. He will train you to be the best version of yourself that you can be.
He is such a wonderful personality and really connects with his student. There is no fear to talk to him
One of the best professors I've ever had. Not only is he super nice but he's a great teacher. He always answered my emails right away. Projects were fun and engaging. Those two and a half hours few by.
TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Mr. Gardner is the best foundational drawing teacher you can take. He is an artist himself, and he actually cares about his students and wants to see you do well. He tells the best stories to keep you interested and the feedback and help he provides really pushes you to do better. I looked forward to coming to his class!
Stephen Gardner is an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about each student and takes the time to work with everyone individually to make sure they understand the projects. He made getting up at 6am worth it! His feedback during critiques is always constructive, and never mean or harsh. Definitely recommend . Also, Stephen Gardner has cod ties.
You want to learn gouache really well? Take this class, Professor Gardener's is an amazing artist and a super helpful teacher. Super invested in student's learning and enjoying the medium. gouache master class when
Professor Gardner is one of the most caring professors I have taken so far! He makes sure to help every single student in the class with their assignments and understanding how to do them effectively. He truly cares about his work and even shares what he is working on (book covers, portraits, etc) in class! I recommend!!!!!
Professor Gardner is genuinely the best professor I've had at SCAD so far. He is caring, hilarious, and very talented. His teaching style is great and I'm very sad I did not get to take his class in person. Despite never teaching an online class, he made it easy and gave us ample time to work on projects. Very interesting and fun projects. 10/10!
Prof Gardner is the nicest, calmest man. He can always find praise to give to students' work in addition to constructive criticism. He is also extremely talented himself. I wish I was taking more illustration classes so I could take him again!
Such a great class! Gardner is such a sweet, supportive professor. He's super funny, engaging and makes the classroom environment inviting and fun. I really loved this drawing class. 10/10 would recommend :)
If you get professor Gardener you have nothing to fear. You do read a couple of chapters here and there but its nothing that would keep you up all night they are short chapters and you just do a simple activity. He does not grade harshly as I think he doesnt have that capability to be mean. He is very sweet/funny I recommend getting to know him.
Stephen gives the BEST critiques and will work with you wherever you are at with your art. He knows his stuff and is such a skilled painter that you can't help but learn form him! He has a ton of extra help sessions and he is so positive and happy to be there. If you didn't like this man's class then don't even talk to me.
He is amazing and so kind hearted. Honestly if someone has a problem with him, it's them not Professor Stephen.
Gardner was an exceptional drawing professor. His explanations are clear on the projects and gives you plenty class time to work. He gives extremely valuable feedback on how to improve your work, and is very caring for each of his students. I generally had a good time in each and every one his classes. I highly recommend.
I hate drawing, but hes an amazing professor who will keep pushing you to do better. He helped me a lot when I was struggling!! I enjoyed going to his class.
he is a really good guy who is genuinely understanding if you need help. his feedback is great and gives good tips. Definitely don't be afraid to ask for help with him. he doesn't have that many grading opportunities, so be sure to turn in good work.
I have never met another professor before that I truly felt I could connect with on a personal level. He is not only an amazing professor but also a positive person. He always tries to lift others up and motivate them to show their individuality through their artwork. Just make sure to stay on task so that you don't fall behind!
I cannot recommend this class enough! Professor Gardner is a fun professor who keeps his class lively and entertaining. He is also a talented artist who gives good tips, feedback, etc. He's a little bit picky when grading but he will always give you tips on how to improve and your grade won't suffer from it.
Professor Gardner is a very kind guy. I learned a lot and ended up with some pretty good projects for someone who had never drawn before. His class was very relaxed and he wasn't harsh or harder on those who were less experienced in drawing. I do wish there were more grading opportunities in his class, but other than that a good experience.
Professor Gardner actually cares about his students and would check with each individual student on their project progress and help them fix any potential problems. He gives clear instructions and rubrics are easy to follow. He also tells the best stories. Coming to his class was always a joy.
He's so kind and caring - not to mention amazingly talented. He only uplifts and encourages, and even if he thinks you're not on the right track or not putting in the effort he will never discount your efforts and instead offer to uplift the student.
Gardner is an amazing professor. 10 outta 10 would recommend. Super kind and caring and teaches his method in a very clear and consistent way. Gives great constructive feedback. Def take him if you can!!
He was always really nice, caring and fun, which made his classes a lot more interesting and engaging. He also explains what he expects for each project clearly (especially because they can seem challenging), and if you work hard, he will definitely recognize your efforts and be on your side.
Stephen is the absolute best, he will always put you in a good mood. His grading and critiques are always very helpful and clear, super friendly and understanding of every student's skill level especially accommodating during the pandemic when I had little access to materials and was taking his class online from India.
Love prof Gardner so much. He's really easy to talk to and will explain things very well. In his class, you will make projects you can be proud of and he'll give you genuine advice about how you can do better. If you get him you just got lucky because his class is amazing!
Professor Gardner was amazing, would highly recommend for people of ALL drawing levels. Hes awesome!
Gardner is so wholesome and really lifts his students up. He really pushes you to develop your sight for slight value transitions and really helps you be about your work. He's super easy going and will definitely work with you if something comes up. His projects are mostly portrait centered but he really helps you through the process. Def Recommend
Gardner is such a joy to be around. Most of the assignments in this class are portraits, but hes very laid back and will even give you hands-on help with your work if you ask. I was lucky to be able to sign up for his other class ILLU312, so I cant wait to have him again!
I absolutely loved this class even though it was just a free elective. Professor Gardener is so kind with his feedback and actually shows you what you can do to improve your projects hand on. I learned so many techniques in this class.
I took this class online so I didn't really get the full experience, but despite that I can still tell you that Gardner is a professor that truly cares about your work and wants you to improve. He's absolutely delightful to learn from and I'll gladly take him again if given the chance.
Humorous, caring, and willing to help students, he's a fantastic professor who I wholeheartedly recommend. Absolutely adored his class, and pushes students to do their best no matter what. Be prepared to do a lot of portraits in this class, which isn't terrible because he offers a lot of extra help.
Gardner is so sweet & an AMAZING illustrator. His artwork motivates me to push more on my work. I love listening to his stories of how he got here & who he’s met along the way. He has so much experience in the field (& in life). All I want to do is learn from him all day. Great, amazing, & spectacular person & professor.
Prof. Gardner taught me so many techniques to improve my realistic drawings, and he was always eager to give advice on how to make my work better. I liked that he only has five total grades, each being one project you spend a couple of weeks on, and he takes each project step by step. He was also hilarious, and I always enjoyed convo with him:)
Stephen is a great professor. If you want to learn how to use gouache you should take him. I learned a great amount about color and light in this class. He doesn't care how good you are at painting, if you put in the effort you will do well. Sad I cannot take him again.
Amazing professor. Clear grading criteria, and grades fair. If you put in the work and do well with time management, you will easily pass this class. Do your readings to pass the quizzes and discussion boards. And his class was super engaging and you could get a lot of work done if you pay attention in class.
Genuinely one of the best professors here. Incredibly kind and supportive and I learned a lot in his class :) gives plenty of time to work in class and plenty of direction and encouragement when needed.
Fall 2021 - One of the BEST teachers I've had at SCAD. Bri ish man was a fantastic person to be around. Class was constantly live and just a joy to be in. Class itself was very fun as well, Gardner goes over portraiture and how to look at someone's face. The projects were super helpful in studying faces. TAKE HIM!
I loved this class, it was so easy and I produced some of my best work in it. Prof Gardner is very kind and willing to help. He does demonstrations throughout the class that you can check out as you see fit, and will drop everything to come and help you. He sometimes will even work on your project for you to show you what he thinks is needed. 10/10
I believe that Professor Gardner is one of the best illustration professors at SCAD. He's passionate about art (especially gouache), and is more than happy to help students. He also hosts extra help sessions every Friday, so you can always go in for additional help as needed. Most of his class is studio time, so come prepared to paint.
Gardner is an amazing professor, always available for help, lively classroom environment and fun assignments. I do wish he gave a little more feedback with grades, but you can just ask him directly and he allows you to touch up previous work. Highly recommend taking him if you can!!
love love LOVE gardner, he is so sweet and supportive and genuinely just wants you to have fun and make art you're proud of. you only use traditional media in his class, so don't go in thinking you'll be able to work digitally. always willing to help and regrade anything you want him to!
Very kind and good first level art teacher. grades on effort and not preexisting skill. Only downside is you will have to buy lots of art supplies, but that gives for almost all draw 100 classes. Amazing teacher, learned a lot and not a difficult class.
One of the most wholesome people I have ever met. He is so kind and caring and just excited to be a teacher. Super cool project where you make a Muppet at the end of the class. I couldn't recommend him more. He makes a lot of dad jokes, and he talks a lot, but you always have a lot of time to work in class which I loved.
Amazing professor that really just wants you to have fun and explore new ideas. The projects are pretty much open ended but he will push your ideas further and further.
He's an amazing professor and you can really tell that he cares a lot about his students. His class is so much fun, and you get to make each project your own and have fun with them. He's such a fun guy to be around and I really wish I could have him as my teacher for every class. His passion is contagious and he's one of the best teachers I've had.
Prof. Gardner is really good with making sure he gets to know you personally and help you improve. He shows demos in class for everything he expects you to learn and checks in with every single person while you work so you don't have to come to him every time with questions. He's really funny and you can tell he likes teaching (even after 20 years)
Gardner is hands down one of THE BEST professors at SCAD. He cares so so much about all his students and his main goal is for you to make work that you're proud of. If you get the opportunity, TAKE HIM!!!
I could not have asked for a better professor! Fun projects and awesome feedback! He wants to push students and really wants us to grow and improve in new mediums.
He made me look forward to my 8am drawing classes, made class engaging with fun conversation, and made efforts to talk and get to know each student. He provided lots of constructive individual feedback and offered plenty of help if needed. He made the class exciting for both experienced and new artists with enjoyable easygoing projects.
i loved this teacher. he was very funny. i loved the class and his energy. i love the drawings we did. my favorite was our final and our stuffed animal drawing. but overall i really liked this class and my teacher
I wish I could take Gardner again, I took him for 218 as well and he is a joy to be in class with. I think it should be mandatory for everyone in ILLU take him. He offers amazing critique and experience while still being considerate and sweet. Classes are almost entirely work time and you rarely have to work outside of class if you manage your time
I recently had my first class with him and I found being in his class to be the highlight of my day. He's very sweet and caring with his students, and he offers great feedback while acknowledging everyone's potential. Expect to do a lot of work, however, because he likes to assign multiple projects at once, and it can be a little tough to keep up.
I love professor Gardener. He is great at communicating and knows how to phrase things in an inspirational way. He uses clear grading standards but is able to respect and understand personal style. Ive had class with him twice and although it's quite a bit of work, he gives plenty of class time to work and is compassionate if things come up.
Best 3D Design class! Prof. Gardner has the most unique assignments in the department. He encourages you to think big, and will help brainstorm if you're having trouble. He's very particular about documentation and craftsmanship. Workload can get heavy if you don't plan a bit beforehand. Very fun projects; you won't regret taking his class!
Gardner is a legendary professor. Don't hesitate to take one of his classes if you see him. He is warm and friendly, and he can give you constructive advice and take care of your wallet (art materials are costly).
Single-handedly the greatest professor I have ever had. I HATED painting before I took his class and now I absolutely love gouache painting. I never had a teacher who encouraged me to paint before and sincerely appreciate him for making sure I knew what I was doing and felt confident in it. If you can score a class with him, TAKE IT. I'll miss him.
Lives up to the legend!! Shows clear demonstrations of techniques, but encourages creativity and having your own unique style. Extremely understanding and flexible for anyone struggling. Take as many classes with him as you can!
He's probably the best professor for anyone starting in art. He guides you into the topic well, builds up a ton of interest, and keeps the class fun, motivated, and on schedule. His presentations and lectures are awesome, and you actually learn things form him, even more if you decide to go and talk to him after class. Probably the best professor
Very funny and friendly, projects are really engaging. I'm a complete beginner to drawing and I found the class very easy and I saw improvements in my skills.
I loved taking this class with Professor Gardener. I was already excited for ILLU 218, and he made it even better. He is very kind and accommodating, and is always there to help you if you are struggling with anything. It is evident that he truly cares about his students and their success, and would rather see you thrive than working for a grade.
Gardner is great! such a funny and chill guy. There was a lot of homework but it was whatever you were working on in class, but even if you fell a little behind he was always very patient and even makes sure to give you a little extra help. Loves to see student's improve and his words of advice are very motivation. Amazing professor!
