he is really interesting and his talks are always really funny. its easy if you make sure he clarifies what you are doing.
Very engaging and entertaining. Knows his stuff and loves the art. Lots of integrity. Very into the process of writing, uses great examples and screens them in class. Don't miss out on this professor.
Tends to ramble and goes off on tangents all the time. Good class, but he be prepared to write several multipage papers.
I dread going to his class. It is so boring. He rambles every class and we never get to what we are supposed to do. Which can be good. But the presentations are what keep me awake. I would not recommend this prof unless you want to be bored. Plus he forces his opinion on you. Some of the stuff he says can be offensive.
I had a love-hate relationship with this class. now that I'm out of the class, I like it, but when I had the class- I hated it. You will write four multipage papers and he does ramble and gets off topic a lot. Overall his class was pretty easy.
Yeah, he gets off on lots of tangets but they're usually funny. If I had to give a complaint it'd be that it's hard to know in something as subjective as a script what A material is as opposed to a B, what I always got. That said, he's my favorite teachers i've ever had. Then again, screenwriting is my passion so i'm a bit biased.
He rambles a lot .. but im sure its better than actually listening to someone talk about english. We watched some random movies and musicals and learned a lot about johnny mercer .. not sure what that has to do with english but made it less boring. You'll write some stupid 3-5 page papers .. nothing taxing. the work is easy and he is a fun guy
I thoroughly enjoyed Prof. Geller's class. Yes he did talk alot during sessions and he's very emotional, but what he said was very informative and sometimes funny. His questions and discussions in class were very thought provoking and they will leave a lasting impression in my mind. If ur a good listener, then you'll love Geller's class.
He is a good teacher for creative writers, but last term we had to write a 10-15 page paper about ourselves... O it was a research paper too... so we had to write about things in books about ourselves. Good class for hard workers
This man absolutely changed my life. He is easily the best teacher ive ever had. He teaches you about language as a whole- english. We learned about songwriters and watched fantastic old movies. Hes like a character out of a book. He will curse and laugh and smile and every word out of his mouth is real. Every sentence out of his mouth is perfect.
He is really smart and educated. You learn a lot in his class.
He is extremely knowledgeable about what he is teaching. There is a lot of writing involved, so don't take the class if you want an easy A. But it is so worth it. I learned so much in his class. He often requires you to buy lots of movies and books but they can be bought really cheep on-line.
So, everyone who believes that this was an informative and interesting class is wrong. If you want to go back to your 7th grade english this is the class for you! We didn't go over the literature at all. I dreaded his pointless one sided talks about life. I cant believe i paid for that painful disgrace of an english course.
Outside of the classroom, I don't think anybody listens to him speak. So in turn, he will talk at you for two and a half hours straight with opinion-as-fact pompousness and fantastic long-windedness. His random talks about life are nearly incoherent, as well as boring. This is a class that makes me want to drop out.
Also, he relentlessly quotes Shakespeare but neglects the bard's advice on one most crucial point: Brevity is the soul of wit!
I think it depends on what topics your particular class is going to cover, but he was SO AMAZING. I learned more about life and cinema and art than I did about english, but I loved going to his class. I learned a lot about spicing up your writing skills and we got to watch movies that were still in theaters.
I'm kinda on the fence about this guy. He's really interesting to listen to, but he is a very harsh grader and very nit-picky about one's writing style. It was aggravating having to buy (I kid you not) seven books for this class, and we used only three. But he knows a lot about cinema, and he is passionate about what he does.
Biggest complaint was not knowing what to study for. An Eng midterm predominantly about which composer composed which lyrics? WHO CARES? We listened to him lecture, sing, etc., but never knew what to expect on exams. Not fair. I don't expect to be spoonfed exams but to cover 4 weeks of material and then be quizzed on composers...lame.
Honestly, one of the best teachers of my life. I came out of class learning so much about different things and changed my attitude towards other things because of his class. There is a ton of reading but he cultures you with it too, not boring books but good ones you've never heard of. Strongly recommend him if you want a proper test.
Any who did not enjoy his class, are students with whom do not have a good understanding of the genius in this man and the stories he tells. If you do not leave his class feeling inspired, i feel bad for you. If your expecting a class full of learning just grammar and technical aspects of comp, like you did all of HS then dont take him.
Also I'm not sure what the person a few comments below me is talking about, because geller tells you exactly what to study, he gives you the layout of the test.
I had him for both Composition and Shakespeare. Entirely worth it. He will be a hard ass if you don't do the reading, but if you have a basic comprehension of the material and are able to state an opinion he will love you. He tells many stories, many of which I did not believe about actors and writers. Google him. It's mostly true.
AWESOME.Very funny and Friendly.shows awesum movies.lectures are interesting.uses words like F*ck and a** and all that shi*.he becomes your buddy in the class. sings and dances too.always motivates you.Studies with Fun.however, Cuts a Whole Grade for late submision.textbooks he recomends are interesting. He is very practical n understanding.take him
Great professor! Take him; period. Knows what he's talking about, for real. (Look him up on Wikipedia. Really.) Has passion for his profession and for the art of writing. Great, helpful guy. Only a difficult teacher if you don't listen or don't go to class often enough. Tests are a little hard, but, duh, it's college. Take him, you won't regret it.
Super nice guy, funny, goes on good rants. Class can be kind of boring, you watch a lot of musicals. But he makes sense of it, he lets you know why you're watching it. Participate and have a conversation with him or you won't learn anything.
I had him for Shakespeare-& I was afraid we were just going to do literary criticism. QUITE the contrary. He made it all about the way shakespeare writes and creates his characters & plots. We also memorized & acted a bit every week-which you might not like if you arent a fan of public speaking. I really enjoyed the class and loved having him.
Has been??? Who do you think you are? Geller is one of the best professors I've ever had. So supportive if you put any effort into what you do. Tend to go off on tangents but I'm captivated for every minute.
Really good teacher! The book we had to read was not my favorite but we only had to read one book so I won't complain. He was very helpful and thorough in offering feedback on rough drafts of papers. He read us the best essays ever, such an inspiration. He is really smart!
If you're a strong creative writer, any of Geller's classes will be an easy A. He is so passionate about his - and your - work. He's worked in film and music so for an english comp class, it was a little, well, film and music-centric... I can go for a while without seeing a Fellini film or hearing a Sonheim song again. Nice guy though. Love him.
Best teacher in the whole world! He is wonderful! So nice, so encouraging!
Best professor for this (or any English) class. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone.
Great class! Prof. Geller is beyond inspiring, and incredibly passionate. Few guidelines to follow, but everything is explained. Not a class for slackers and nobodies.
Great teacher! He really knows about English and, maybe more importantly, life. He'll make you read and memorize some stuff, but it's all very worth it.
When it comes to Shakespeare, Geller is the man. He's all about helping students understand the text and loves to do dramatic readings. He goes on the most insightful rants! Take his class if you can, he's a joy.
Amazing. Fun class. He's hilarious. Watched a lot of (Sondheim) musicals. Only had one essay, but it was a long one. He's very helpful though. Some memorization, but as long as you actually try you'll do well. Knows his stuff. Really good if you're interested in music, film/tv, or scriptwriting. Loves his job and it shows. Highly recommended.
Amazing teacher. He explains all assignments thoroughly. Very inspirational and caring. Try taking him for any and every class possible!
Terrible, terrible, terrible. Rambles about useless personal stuff for half the class than argues with you if he doesnt like what you have to say. Tough grader and also makes you recite things weekly from boring books.
Geller is the greatest teacher I've had here at SCAD. He is an absolute GENIUS and a famous screenwriter. He is tough to get an A with but if you work hard enough he will reward you with one. He loves witty, personable, and detailed writing in your essays. He is hilarious and all around an amazing human being.
Professor Geller is a very kind and easy going guy. His class is easy and takes little effort. The only anoying thing about him is that he goes on his rediculous rants about everything and nothing. Also he is a very forgetfull and unorganized.
Geller is a crazy man with crazy stories. His lectures (more on life than english) take up a lot of time and all we did was watch movie after play after musical. One page limits are good but challenging. Stay awake, and its an easy A. You'll learn more than you'd expect. He's got so much wisdom to spread, and I appreciate everything he's taught us.
He is the funniest man ever! love his stories, he gets so side tracked on telling us stories but it doesn't matter cause they are so fun! He is easy, only one page double spaced papers, learning poems, and watching musicals.
THIS MAN IS AMAZING. I was shutout of every other class and was stuck with this, but he made the class so fun and made you really get into shakespeare which is NOT an easy thing to do. He has a true passion for it and you can see it coming from his pores. He is the sweetest little man who has great theories about life and to live in the moment. :)
This was the worst class I've taken here at SCAD. He argues with everything you have to say if he doesn't like it. He rambles, and your tests all all quotes from shakespeare. It's not as easy as it sounds.
I love Professor Geller! He is very passionate about what he teaches, I would highly recommend him! Especially if you have interest in theatre or are a Performing Arts Major, he references a lot of shows, especially Sondheim Musicals, which you watch in class!!
I had a love hate relationship with him. He is incredibly wise and has great stories, yet they tend to go on longer then necessary. He makes a one page limit for all essays, but can be picky if you don't write like him. He is has a lot of opinions but shuts you down if you disagree. Overall its an okay class, but don't expect much of english talk.
This guy is the real deal. He is insanely passionate, and loves communication. He has a tendency to be long-winded, but a sharp mind can keep up with him and laugh from start to finish. Leave your ego and judgment at the door SCAD students, this guy knows more than you do and will call you out if you slack off or make ignorant statements.
He is very straight forward on what he believes is right or wrong. He shares long but interesting personal experiences and reads full short stories to the class which seems useless but is actually profound, and will teach you crucial lessons to improve your writing. A very passionate writer who brightens the mood with a lot of satiric humor.
Geller was one of my favorite professors I've had so far. He is very helpful, so don't hesitate to ask him for help if you need it. We had to memorize poetry for every class which sounds daunting, but got easier every time. He expects a lot, but it really was such a beneficial class. Learned a lot.. As he would say, "It was fabulous!"
Geller is a satirical man full of stories from his past that relate to the class. he will teach you how to write, bot by doing, but by showing you what is good writing. He often goes on rants that go on for too long, but nothing important is said. Do the class work, and you'll pass easily. The class is enjoyable and funny.
He is amazing!!! best professor so far! we don't have much works except some readings and tests are really easy! His stories are the best.
I learned literally nothing in this class. He just sat in front of the class and read the plays out loud and occasionally went off on a random tangent about something completely unrelated. Absolutely no discussion of themes, foreshadowing, etc. If you want an easy A, I'd recommend this class for sure, but if you actually want to learn, stay away.
Great Professor! I went in not really caring about Shakespeare, and now I have whole sonnets memorized. The best part, I sincerely enjoy the topic and had fun during classes. I would strongly recommend the class to those who have never had any experience with Shakespeare. And to those who have, I think you will find a new love for the material.
Had him for ENG123 and it was the easiest A in the world! He is also very passionate and gives talks that may seem a bit long-winded, but it'll be really enjoyable if you engage.
A really sweet man with a great sense of humor. He knows what he's talking about and has so much experience. His lectures can last an entire hour, but he'll find a way to turn it into some metaphor for English/life by the end. If you're respectful and attentive in class, he'll do anything to help you. He actually learns your name and cares.
Really great professor, super funny and makes reading (and watching) shakespeare plays really fun and interesting. HOWEVER- be warned that he does expect you to memorize and recite different blurbs and sonnets in front of the class (or at least in his office before the class begins), otherwise, awesome professor, amazing class.
We had two tests and two quizzes. Normally this would scare me but he gives unlimited extra credit. I was so scared to take this class but he gives out test questions before the test and in one week I pulled my grade up from a D to an A-. If you aren't confident about Art History I would highly recommend him.
Just a joy to be around. Professor Geller is hilarious, opinionated, and gives some really interesting talks about the abstract nature of satire. You watch and read a lot of plays and great films and the quizzes are super easy. Have fun with this one.
Professor Geller is amazing! A truly passionate man who knows what he's talking about, and a pleasure to be taught by. Once you get used to his tangents (they are long and frequent, but interesting), the class is a fun breeze. We read the text in class, the only outside work is preparing a presentation and weekly quote recitations. Would recommend!
He claims it's the hardest ENGL123 and he's probably right. Essay class but you have to write a sonnet. But it's actually more about be specific with words rather than rhyming. He'll push you and you'll actually improve. Interesting class discussion. 2 tests that's not too hard. Talks about life experience a lot.
Geller helped me become a more confident artist, and assured me that I was in the right place at SCAD in every class. Kind, Easy-going, despises MLA, engaging, and helps you learn to value writing. One presentation, two ONE page papers, and one sonnet. You wont regret enrolling in his class!
super friendly and loves to hear different opinions even if he doesn't agree with them. Chilled. Take his class if u don't mind re correcting each writing assignment.
Geller is a really nice, understanding professor. He wants you to do well, and he always makes time to personally help you. He's very funny, and he talks a lot. His speeches are inspiring but they can last the whole class, so beware of that. His class isn't hard, but you still have to do some work. Cool guy, would recommend.
I literally don't even remember Romeo and Juliet from high school and came out of this class with an A. He's so easy to listen to and stay interested. He gives lots of extra credit. There was some memorization and the tests with the quotes wasn't easy (iBooks has a search bar for quotes and all the shakespeare plays are in iBooks).
ENGL170 is my second and, unfortunately, final class with Prof Geller because I have no more electives left. If I could I would absolutely take more classes taught by him. Enthusiastic, hilarious, engaging. The Satire and Shakespeare classes were incredible and his passion for the subject matter makes you want to learn. Definitely 100% recommended.
If you don't have a more sophisticated sense of humor, you won't do well. It's a literature heavy class and if you can't analyze writing well, you just won't get it. So many people I had class with thought it was stupid because they didn't get it, but it was an amazing class and the reading was hilarious and cringey.
Super easy A. He kinda just tells stories for 2 hours, there's like 3 essays you have to do for his class, all 1-2 pages. He's really understanding about late work, you just might not agree with all his opinions. He also makes you recite a stanza or two every week or so in front of the class, as long as you remember some of it you'll get an A.
Super great guy! He is really passionate about what he does and cares about his students. He lectures for along time, but they are always engaging and funny. His class is a bit too easy though, if you want to learn a lot and really improve your writing, I would get someone else. But he is definitely fantastic and I would take him again!
I took this class solely because of the raving reviews of this prof. I'm here to warn you, probably my least favorite prof I've had at SCAD so far. Yes the class was super easy, but mind numbingly so. He would talk for 45 minutes straight and no one was able to follow him. Looking for an easy English elective? He's your guy.
Easiest A I've had in college, but I hated every minute of it. This guy is way more interested in name-dropping celebrities he knows and boosting his ego with hour-long tangents about his time in Europe than he is with actually teaching or engaging with his students. Lectures dragged & rarely had anything to do with the course material. HARD pass.
Professor Geller is amazing. He comes in tells a story about something going on in the world and its a breath of fresh air. He has passion for Shakespeare that rubs off on his students. His tests are difficult with random quotes from Shakespeare plays and he expects you to know the person that said that one line. One of my favorite professors!
He lectures for almost the entire class and he easily gets off topic. The majority of the things he says are opinionated and biased. He thinks that his perspectives are the true answers and yours is flawed. The few assignments he gives are not specifically clarified and laid out. The class itself is easy but he is a bad professor for teaching and l
Geller's love for Shakespeare really rubs off on his students. I was worried about being bored out of my mind, but he made it interesting!! He gets really passionate during his lectures and reads in an AMAZING way.
A very funny and passionate teacher, though sometimes (or most of the time) his passion about random topics lead him into hour long rants and lectures about something unrelated to the class. I feel as if his actual lessons took up less time than his stories. He makes you recite lyrics from a book every week, which I'm not sure is very beneficial.
Professor Geller is sort of an odd duck but he's cool! He is very forgiving with due dates and presentation nerves, but try not to take advantage of it. I wrote three essays through the 10 weeks. You will do a recitation from the Reading Lyrics book every week, so be aware of that. He does tend to go on tangents for 30+ minutes, but he's good!
Professor Geller made me feel so inspired and hopefull every time he lectured. Although, he lectures so much. Every class he talks for an hour straight, non-stop. Some of the talks are rambling, but when you listen, it's quite interesting. As long as you do the work and pay attention, you will be fine. We also had to memorize poems and recite them
Extremely easy A, the only assignments were essays that you revised 4 times over the whole quarter. Every few classes we had poetry recitation, that was basically it. The entire class was basically just show up and listen to him talk for 2.5 hours, he goes off on rabbit trails and I didn't learn much from him but it definitely was an easy A.
you'll not write as much, but his funny and participative way of teaching made me want to learn.
He talks about things that don't really have anything to do with the class and goes on tangents all the time. There's recitations every few classes. Sometimes his grading criteria can be a bit confusing, but it's not terrible.
Easy class, but I didn't feel like I learned all that much through foundations of story. His lectures are hit or miss, sometimes they're really exciting (he has alot of cool stories with big names from his career), other times it's very stale, but he's super passionate regardless. In either, case, the lectures are inconsequential to your grade.
Professor Geller is an alright guy and has many interesting life stories, but beware: his tangents can last almost the entire class, and his grading criteria was hard to follow. I took his class on zoom, and I was lost most of the time. Make sure to ask other students for clarification.
I've taken two classes with Professor Geller, and he is easily one of my favorite professors. He is such a down to earth guy and super understanding. As a PROD major, I highly recommend taking his class because we mainly focused on storytelling from a film perspective. Professor Geller and his class truly inspired me. 10/10 would take again!!!
Geller is definitely not for everyone but, I LOVE HIM! I took him for English 123, 137, and 142 and enjoyed his classes so much both in person and online. He tends to go on tangents but is very passionate about what he teaches. He is full of fun stories and you can get so engaged in a conversation with him, ESPECIALLY if you're a film major.
He always sent the syllabus email to us next week's homework on Sunday without following the Syllabus. Since Mid-Term, the number of assignments was amazing. Even at the Final-Term, he sent the syllabus email about the final paper a day before. NO content or NO requirements were given regarding the paper.
The Syllabus I saw at the beginning of the semester did NOT contain the final paper and final exam BUT he suddenly added the final paper to the BlackBoard on week 9 Sunday. It's so ridiculous. We did a total of three papers during the semester. The last paper is NOT a predetermined schedule. He just told us the due date before a day.
The first (total 4 questions) and second (total 10 questions) quiz are ORAL and students have DIFFERENT questions. This is UNFAIR! Some students are very easy questions. They even ask for lines and if the right characters spoke. I DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM. HE IS THE WORST PROF I MET EVER.
He doesn't follow the syllabus, and he always upset if a student has a question. He has an oral quiz, but all students have different quiz questions. That is not UNFAIR. For example, student A has question "what is name of the king?", and another student B will have a quotation question. Professor said a quotation and he asked us who said this? OMG
This professor only gives preferential treatment to certain students. If there is an oral quiz, they are given more opportunities. That is not fair; it can be part of Discrimination. Also, when sending an e-mail to Professor, he always gives unclear answers or talks in an offensive way; always mad. This class doesn't help at all.
He doesn't follow the syllabus at all. He always changes what did he say before. He makes students confused. I do not recommend this professor. THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER EVER EVER IN SCAD. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I got an A grade in this class, but I do not recommend this class. His quizzes questions are not fair for all students. Even though I got an A grade in this class, he is a really tough grader, and he doesn't respect students, and his lecture is really boring. Even, IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET A.
Oh boy. Geller is super passionate and can be very fun. HOWEVER, the class was very disorganized. The three papers ( the last one added the day before it was due) were open ended with NO grading criteria. Oral quizzes were based on who said what quote in a certain play & likes to randomly call on students. Classes were just him reading the play.
He is the most eccentric person ever in a bad way. His lectures are Total nonsense! hes not clear whatsoever and isn't very helpful. he often was very catty when asked questions and fought with family members during class. We watched a lot of movies one being Malcolm X where the professor Used a very derogatory word! we had to report him.
I had prof for eng 123 and eng 142. I really think he's a cool teacher. His stories and lie experiences are very interesting. But he does go in tangents and off topic alot. Eng 123 was a breeze and both classes only had like 5/6 assignments. In eng 142 we did lots of reading and papers, however we watched tons of movies in that class too.
Professor Geller is absolutely my favorite professor I have had so far at SCAD. To be honest, I was worried about taking an English course because I thought it was going to be boring, but his class is anything but. His use of Stephen Sondheim's works to illustrate his points were genius, and his stories were hilarious.
He didn't follow the syllabus whatsoever and most of the class was just watching movies all of which were extremely sexual which made everyone uncomfortable. The required reading was also extremely sexual and was very clearly only required because he wrote it. Also he doesn't give clear grading criteria but if you turn it in you'll get an A .
He respects every student. Only 2 papers need to be finished for the whole quarter.
Almost no homework, easily get grades. He's kind.
Horrible professor, Made a mistake in his blackboard which I confronted him about, told me he would fix my grade from the mistake he made and never changed it. Took my grade down from a high B to a C. He didn't even attempt to correct his mistake and messed up my GPA. As for the cherry on top, He didn't reply to any of my emails about the grade.
