He teaches the night class and his lechtures are extremely boring, but he has the best grading policy I've had in college. Takes 3 highest HW grades, 4 highest quiz grades. A lot of extra credit too if you stick around. Midterm and Final hard, b he curves
He is a good teacher and goes over relevant material. Stay in lecture and his tests are a breeze.
Great Professor. Good Interaction with the students and test are easy if you keep up with whats going on.
Very enthusiastic about teaching. Brings real life situations into play to help with understanding material. Provides a great website for references to his class material. Would highly recommend for any ECON class! He's better than most others!
He is a good guy. Very fair. You need to study for his tests but they are not too hard. His grading policy is great. His lectures are intresting even for a 3 hour class. Take him and youll learn alot and get a good grade.
I dreaded taking another ECON class but he was really great. I highly recommend him. He made his lectures interesting. Very fair grader-drops lowest exam & quiz grades. Lots of fun extra credit to break up the class. 13 homework assignments. You choose the 3 you want to do and turn in. Open notes exams!!
Prof Gilespie is a good guy. I think he grades fairly and would highly reccomend him over the other @$$*&*% teachers. He drops the lowest quiz grades, gives a ton of extra credit and 3 HW assignments. Also, he lets you have a cheat sheet on the tests. U need to do WELL on the HW and quizes cause the Midterm and Final are a pain in the @SS.
Class is EASY. LEctures are boring and drag on for the whole class period but he gives extra credit if you stay after the break in the 3 hour lecture. 10 extra credit points = 1 point added to final grade. Midterm and final only. There are about 20 homework and quizes but he only takes 3 or 4 from each (the best). These are 50% of the grade. EASY!!
He is great i had to take this class over and he helped so much he is so sweet and tries to do anything he can to make you understand and take an interest in econ.
Prof Gillespie is a nice man & his class made me actually take an interest in Econ. Anyways, his class isn't too bad- lectures are long but he does activities to give some extra credit points & make the class more enjoyable. Tests are fairly difficult but he lets you bring in a page of notes. If you take a little time to study you should get an A.
His class is only easy if you can do math. Roughly 50% of his tests questions are math-related (easy), or should I say Econ math. The homeworks are quizzes are 50% of the grade; they are easy. The tests are okay. Here's a hint: On the "cheat sheet," make sure you write down all the equations covered. Don't waste space writing useless definitions.
Class isn't too bad. Homework and quizes are easy but tests are somewhat hard. Lectures can become insanely boring at times.
Lectures can DEFINITELY get boring and drag on for the whole class, yet it is very clear. He makes sure there is absolutely NO confusion, so he explains things extremely slowly and thoroughly, which can get annoying at times. He takes the best 3 homework grades out of about 20!!! Best 4 quiz grades,a final and midterm. I recommend this chill class.
One of the best I've seen in 4 years at Mason. Thoroughly impressed with his knowledge base along with his ability to build interest for economics. Extra Credit, Crib Sheets, Multiple Chances for Homework and Quizzes; Professor Gillespie cares more about what his student's learn than most other people in this world. He won't be easily forgotten.

Man I can't explain how amazing Mr.Gillespie was,he let us bring a cheat sheet to the test, took our best 3 hw assingments out of 18!! and took our best 4 quizes out of 8, man if u come to class with the least bit of initiative you should get at least a B+, I got an A cuz he helped out so much
strongly recommend
nice guy very clear and patient but econ 310 is really a difficult course u really have to work hard to do well
he really knows his stuff and is really helpful. great teacher, one of the best i've had. highly recommend.
Great professor. Knows his stuff, & very helpful. I never read the book, just paid attention to his lectures. He gives you notes and everything you need is in them. You get to bring a cheat sheet to the exam. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures are very informative and if you take good nots, that's all you'll need to pass. I got an A+.
This guy is the man, and has made a difference in the GEOGICAL AND ECON world. I even brought my dad to his class. Even my dad loved him and participated in the group work. My dad flew in and didnt have anything to do so I emailed the professor and there it happened. I learnt alot too, definitely worth taking. He is a great guy as well... Yehya
He is probably one of the nicest professors i've met so far, very helpful and patient. Although text books are not necessary for your understanding of this course, you still need one to do the homework. ECON 310 is really a hard course. Tests are quite hard for me.
good professor, extremely hard tests!
Professor Gillespie is a very passionate professor. He explains things very clearly. He gave out 7 pop quizzes. I only found 2 of them were easy. The other were really hard. mid-terms and finals were enormously difficult, even though he gave us extra points. I only got a B-, but I still recommend this professor.
Great, passionate professor. He's very clear and makes ever attempt to make the class and subject interesting. He offers extra credit if you go to class. Basically we would make guesses on what the market was going to do. Attendance is not mandatory. He posts the previous years tests as a study guide, lets you have one page of notes for test.
I failed ECON 103 with Bennett. Gillespie is much more clearer and does a WAAAYYYY better job explaining the materials. He works though problems with us to make sure we understand how to do them. He allows crib notes during exams. He did such a great job teaching me, I barely used my crib notes during his first exam! Highly recommended professor!!!
If you need to take ECON 103 take it with him. He is much easier than Rustici or Bennett, even though its a late class. Just show up to class, take notes, and you should get an A. I never showed up, just read the notes online, and managed to get a B. Tests are difficult but he curves like you wouldnt believe.
Attendance is not mandatory but if you attend you won't need to read the book. He explains the concepts very well, even a little too much, so expect that he'll use every minute of the schedule class time. This makes it a bit hard to stay awake. Overall, great class and professor.
He is clear if you can stay awake. The hardest part of this class for me was staying awake (720-10pm class). He gives you a decent sized break in the middle of class which half the class used to run to Starbucs. If you stay awake, take decent notes and study for the tests there is no reason you should get below a B
Very Easy. I never showed up to class and got a B- He lets you use a sheet of notes during the exam and final. If you show up to class and pay attention its an easy A.
Love Prof. Gillespie!
He is a nice guy but his lectures are very bland. If you have a genuine interest in actually learning the material, don't take him. It's more worth it to take Rustici if you actually want to learn more than just reading from the book. He lets you use cheat sheets on both the midterm and final exam and he curves a lot so it's easier but not fun.
Ok I have had Gill. for 2 different classes and I think he's awesome. 1) He will let you use a cheat sheet on the exams. 2) Attending class is not mandatory but it does pay to attend class because he gives out extra credit a lot. 3) The HW and other work was easy 4) Lectures are bland-ish but if you like the subject you'll get a lot out of it.
Here it is. Exams are hard, but he allows a cheat sheet. 21% Homework over 10 chances, top 3 grades are taken. 20% pop quizzes around 9 chances (some are take home) top 4 are taken. 24% midterm 35% Final. The professor is a bit boring. He gives out notes for every lecture. READ THE BOOK. A lot of extra credit. He curves. You need to study.
SUCH A BORING PROFESSOR! HE IS ALSO ADJUNCT SO HE IS NOT HELPFUL OUTSIDE OF CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO GO TO RESTON TO HIS OFFICE. HE DOES NOT MAKE THE TOPIC FUN OR EASY TO UNDERSTAND OR ANYTHING. he is an OK professor but i can not express how boring he is!! ugh I honestly wish that I did not take him, I don't recommend.
He is passionate and knowledgeable; he's been teaching for a while and he studied under TWO Nobel laureates. I thought he would be a GMU Austrian guy, but he seems more like a Chicago school guy. His class notes are AWESOME. The way he grades is very generous, top 3 quizzes, top 3 homeworks. You'll be fine if put a it of work into it.
2 exams, 5 homework assignments, some pop quizzes (though he counts for only 5 I believe) and 3 experiments. Lectures can be dry, but overall he's a cool dude. You need to buy the book though in order to do the homework, and the book itself is useful. Try to go to class as much as possible though, I didn't and I ended up getting a B in the class.
This year he's published his own textbook (reasonably priced) which is required to understand the material. His lecture outlines are too sparse and lecture material too complex to follow otherwise. Pop quizzes are tough, to even get four good grades you have to review before each class like its the midterm or final. He regularly curves his tests.
I would not recommend, his lectures are extremely dry and half the time he references the book he wrote which is more helpful than he is. I learned too late that you want to copy the practice exam on to your note sheet, some questions are word-for-word. Extremely wordy professor and doesn't get to the point. Do all extra credit opportunities!
If you want to learn anything about economics do not take his class. His lectures are very boring and half of the time no one is paying attention so you can barely even hear what he is saying. He gives a lot of homework and quiz options which is needed because his midterm and final are extremely hard. He's a nice person but not a great professor.
Professor Gillespie is a good professor. The lecture was really boring and un-engaging. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities that is offered and homework.
Take him for all ECON if you can. Exams are not bad and he allows you to bring 1 page of notes with anything you want on it, front and back. This really helped prepare for exams, which consists of material that was clearly covered in class. Took Rustici and I never wanted to talk about economics again, Gillespie got me to like economics again.
He is a really nice professor and will do everything to help you. His lecture notes are great and there are tons of opportunities for extra credit. Get his textbook if you want to do well. Lectures are long though but clear. I would recommend him.
He wrote the textbook and it is amazing, its super simple and dumbed down and the tests are sometimes word for word off of it. His lectures are long and boring but that's not his fault, its Econ. He does little things to make it interesting, he's a wonderful professor! Tests are tough but he drops the lowest and there are only 2 homework grades.
He gives you everything you need to pass. The only way you'll fail is if your too lazy to read the notes he post online for you.
If you read the text book chapters and go to class you will pass. Good lectures, gets to the point with clarity. Only 2 homework assignments for the semester. Offers help and extra credit
Really easy class. Read the textbook and take notes. Theres 5 exams, 2 homework assignments and a final.
This guy is the goat! U don't need to go to class, just get the book and read it. I only went for exams and got an A-. There are 5 exams (drops the lowest) and 2 hws, both super easy. The final is cumulative but he uses q's from the 5 exams so just memorize them. Allows a cheat sheet and curves your grade! Best Econ prof. I've had so far!
Super easy, recommend him for taking ECON104
He's a great professor. Allows you to use notes on all of his exams so take advantage of it. Really easy class if you put the effort into it. Buying the textbook is a must for the class.
He's a good professor, definitely knows his economics. Lectures are kind of boring, but not too bad. His class consisted of 5 exams (drops lowest grade and curves) and 1 final. Everything is based off of his textbook and his lectures. Go to class and read the book and you'll be good.
He is a really friendly professor! Drops the lowest test grade and allows one page of notes on every exam, including the final! But read the book, it has lots of good information and it is useful to know for the future.
Went to class 3 times read the textbook and passed. There's 2 homework questions. you get to choose from 4 prompts for each and write maybe a paragraph. 5 tests and he drops the lowest score.
Allows a cheat sheet for the midterm and final.
There are 8 home work assignments and he only counts the two highest grades. So not all homework's are required to do. The two exams, midterm and final he allows a page of notes. You NEED the book. Even if you don't go to lecture much, STUDY his book and make notes for exams and its not too difficult to pass. Some extra credit, it's easy.
Gillespie is a good professor to have if you are looking for a clear-cut class for a requirement. He is not a passionate professor like many other economic professors at George Mason; however, his teaching style is to the point and is easy to learn. The two exams in the class are curved and there is extra credit that is highly recommended.
He is amazing professor in GMU. I've never met this kind of professor before. Amazing lectures and lots of extra credits, you can easily get A+, but if you skip some classes probably A or A-. Again he is amazing professor and p.s. don't take his desk or he will be crying.
Professor Gillespie is a great professor overall, but with that being said he tends to be a very dry lecturer. To be completely honest a lot of my time in lecture was spent with me studying for other courses. Basically make sure you go to class for the quizzes & prepare a great note sheet for the exams. You will most likely get an A.
SO many extra credit opportunities, only 2 HW assignments that are mandatory and are listed on his website in advanced, 1 midterm and 1 final. There's usually quizzes every or every other class but super easy and about 5-10 questions. I only missed his class twice but if you go he'll announce extra credit and also posts on website.
Liked him! Although he's lectures make me sleepy, he is a very good person! He's caring and thoughtful, with big smiles every time I talked to him. Handling a 200-student class is not easy, but I think he did it just fine! He gives out multiple extra credit opportunities, and he curves the exams--Super easy A!
Cute old man. Great professor. Easy class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. BORING LECTURES, ONLY 2 50 MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS that are NOT from what he teaches in class, makes content and grading sound easy and lures you in by telling you how he curves, allows a sheet of paper on tests etc, but NOT as expected at all. Doesn't make the concept easy to grasp, you'll have to self learn.
Nice good Prof class is boring but easy a couple hw and a small test every couple weeks. All multiple choice
Professor Gillespie is a good teacher he just lectures very heavy. 4 mini exams , he drops the lowest one, and your aloud to use a sheet of notes. He allows extra credit including writing a paper worth 30 points. Anyone who fails this class must have really put in 0 effort.
TOP ECON104 PROFESSOR AT GMU. Combined all the textbooks for his class into a 300p user friendly spiral and created his own website with lecture outlines. 4 exams (25 multiple-choice-only with a curve KEEP YOUR EXAMS FOR FINAL) SO MANY EASY EXTRA CREDIT POINTS. Boring lectures but woulda had an A if I went to last 4 before final :')
Prof Gillespie is truly a very nice person, and always willing to answer questions with a smile. His lectures can be a bit dry but overall the class is structured in a very student friendly manner. I took Thomas Rustisci for ECON 103 prior to his class and this definitely felt like a vacation compared to that.
Professor Gillespie curves every test and there are also lots of credits for doing the online poll. You definitely need to read his textbook carefully to pass the test.
Best professor!! Always provides extra credit opportunities. His lectures can drag on a little (but it's a 3hr class so what do you expect), but he is good at explaining material and breaking it down. It is honestly hard to fail his class, his grading policy is very student friendly. He even provides lecture notes which makes studying way easier.
He wrote the book you need it. Students usually sell their books for cheaper so look out for emails from him about that. He gave us a paper cheat sheet and you can fill out both sides for exams. Lots of the material comes from the book. Extra credit opportunities. Hard to fail this class. Huge lecture class and he wont notice if you are absent.
Sweet and knowledgeable guy. His class isn't very accessible since he relies on his own website instead of using blackboard (therefore, you never really know where you stand with grades). If he used blackboard, I would have no problems with him as a professor. He didn't mind when I showed up to the 7pm lecture in pajamas and slippers.
I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL DURING AN EXAM AND HE GAVE ME A 0 THAT HE DIDN'T LET ME MAKE UP. Also, you never really know where you stand grade wise because he doesn't use blackboard. But that's secondary to the hospital thing. I showed him my doctor's note and everything.
Quizlet is bae. Textbook chapters are easy to read/ short(15pages). Easy optional extra credit. HW was fun, short and easy to do. Short quizzes but need textbook(mostly) and lectures. Resources on Blackboard to practice and review. Both exams were all day/50 questions/open note/combination of MC/write-in/multi-select. Long boring recorded lectures.
He's a really good professor and he wrote the book so it will tell you what you need to know. He lets you bring a sheet of paper for the exams and quizzes. You'll have weekly quizzes and homework assignments.
Best ECON Professor at Mason! Offers good amount of extra credit. Class consists weekly quizzes & homework, and 2 exams (non cumulative). Homeworks were fun as he gave you interesting poll, and quizzes and exams come directly from textbook which he himself wrote. Replies email promptly as well. Do your work in a timely manner, and you will be fine!
A cool dude to be sure.
I have like him as a professor and he has been super chill. His class is setup so that you come to lecture, then the next day you do take an online quiz, and do a homework assignment. His course is pretty simple but make sure to come to lectures to understand what you're learning and you'll pass
He's such an awesome guy. Super chill, and responsive to emails. Highly recommend.
Cool professor! One cheat sheet is allowed for every test. There's no way to fail if you go to class.
He is like the genuine sweet grandpa teaching you how to ride a bike for the first time. He wants you to do well! Literally the only professor I've liked so far. Actually learned stuff, easy-to-follow lectures, chill/sweet energy, clear textbook (you need to actually read), and not too much work. The only downside is his lectures are long.
This class is very hard to fail. The assignments are very easy and you only have to do 5 where you get 100s and he only counts the best grades. He also takes off your lowest mini exam grade. The extra credits are also easy to do. The only downside was that the class was from 7:20-10:30pm and that was my fault for choosing that time.
HWs are easy. Exams can be "reviewed" on quilt. He lets you bring a cheat sheet to the exams.
Allows 1pg of notes in all 4 mini-exams and final. Drops lowest mini exam grade. Textbook is relatively easy to follow and the exams are multiple choice based on it. 10 hw assignments but only 5 count. Offers many extra credits. Almost 3hr lecture can be draining for short attention spans. Overall a nice professor who wants students to succeed.
Great Professor! ALSO, DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT! Literally before finals, I had a 99 in the class because of the extra credit. The exams arent bad at all, they are 25 MCQ and pretty easy if you read the textbook. He is really kind and caring. ALSO DO THE ASSIGNMENTS, they are easy and he only grades top 5 of the 12 assignments and they are easy 100s
Professor Gillespie's class doesn't have a large workload. There's one assignment sent a week, but you are only graded on your highest grades. He really tries to explain everything in detail. Macroeconomics can be difficult in general, but this class is definitely the best in the department.
