very good teacher, pretty funny guy not too bad on the marking
Yeah, the quality of the clothes is what I look for in a professor!
Great Prof, extremely funny, really opens open literature to those less than keen on it. Highly recomend him. Have to agree that he's the best dressed Prof around.
good.
really really awesome prof. funny, smart, . and did i mention funny? one of the best profs. he actually made poetry and engl fun. We just hate the T.A's. the TAs for this class are really bad.
this course is great. prof is witty and sooo hot. and my TA is fantastic - the others seem Ok too.
Excellent sense of humor and teaching style. Knows his stuff and will bring you fun tidbits related to the course. Will wake you up in the morning for your other profs to put you back to sleep. :)
Excellent prof. He is funny, and very informative. His lectures are a joy to attend, and he makes the subject as interesting as possible. Demands high quality work from students but is a fair marker.
He is totally funny and his lectures are really interesting. He doesn't mark any of the material but the T.A.s are awesome. If you can get in to his class, I would take it. But if you don't like reading alot then maybe not.
Excellent lecturer, funny, and has lots of knowledge. Highly recommend.
Amazing, funny, soo smart, has a quote for every topic, dresses impeccably and overall is just a breeze of fresh air. Not at all pretentious, very approachable and has the most amazing memory. Demanding but fair.
Best prof I've had. SO funny. Become friends w/him and you're set, so long as you're willing to do the assigns fairly well and PAY ATTENTION in class. Amazing prof and person
Oh my goodness, this prof is awesome. He's hilariously interesting and def knows his stuff. Classes are 1.5 hours of fun, simple and enjoyable. Take his class if you can bc it's def worth it. Great quotes and words to live by! One of ubc's best. I'd take his class again anyday! Fair marker too.
The most awesome prof I've had @UBC. So funny and smart. I'd take more of his classes if I could. I'd recommend him to anyone with a good sense of humour. If you wanna talk about sex take his 17th century class. Or maybe all this classes are about sex...?
took this class about a year ago n i must agree that hes gotta be in the top 5 of all of UBC for best profs. great speeches, funny, entertaining, can bring the course to student level, keeps u awake and makes u interested in poetry and short stories.
NOT funny! why does everyone find him so funny? ...i think b/c most of the ppl in the class dont realize he is actually making fun of us....hes completely condescending..and spends most of the lectures teaching us new words rather than the actual course material which we will be tested on
This prof is pretty fun, he totally knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't really make you feel bad for not knowing as much as he does. The lectures are sometimes unhelpful, but they're always entertaining.
By far the most entertaining prof I had all year. Very dry and sarcastic, and yes he makes fun of everyone but that's what makes it so fun. In class essays are easy, final was a bit challeging but not that bad. Lectures were long but if you take good notes, it makes writing essays easier.
This prof thinks he's hilarious and brillant. He's actually arrogant, smug, annoying and uber left-wing. He made fun of everyone/every group possible beyond those he obviously was a part of. Guy-Bray didn't appreciate views beyond his own & was a hard marker. He spent days on one poem.
Here's the thing about Stephen: he is much like Harold Bloom in the sense that he believes in the Canon. But in Stephen's case it's good -- he recognizes art and life at its most beautiful, and if you listen closely while he's reading between lines, you'll learn that. He cares fiercely about his students, and is worth enormous trust. Also, hot.
Stephen is a GOD! You must take his courses, if not for the incredible, challenging academic experience, then in order to gaze at his beautiful shoes. Yes, he has a sharp sense of humour, but it's just a reflection of how brilliant he is. I LOVE YOU STEPHEN!
completely unobjective. has class favorites, doesn't like any viewpoints that disagrees with his own narrow one. unhelpful in office hours. Uber left-wing? really conservative in an odd way. hit and miss with the clothes too.
For those that say that he doesn't toelrate any disagreements, how little ye know. All I did for 2 years was disagree with him at every turn and he loved me. Great prof; funny, knowledeable, fashionable and willing to buy you a beer (or 10).
The most arrogant prof I have ever encountered! Do not speak in his class if you don't want to be shut down and made fun of. Does not accept views that are not distinctly his own. Sets a hard exam. The worst two hours that I have ever had to sit through. Avoid this prof at all costs!
Listening to his lectures is just like watching "That 70's Show" (which I watched only twice and hated). His lectures are not for people who can't stand "easy" humor (guy walks, guy falls, a ton of bricks land onto his head). Otherwise, lectures are helpful, not-so-boring and full of useful (and sometimes useless) info.
Entertaining and very clever; he expects more from your written work than his easy-going classes indicate. However, his sense of humor shouldn't be missed and his classes are NEVER boring!
I found his lectures very interesting. He is very distictive in his views but he does allow disagreements. I found him to be helpful out of class. Although, he's very picky about grammar. You have to make a point in your essays and back it up well in order to do well in his class.
awesome prof. Hes definitely one of my top 3 profs at UBC.
J'adore Stephen. He has a delicious sense of humour, great taste in theory, and a fabulous selection of shirts. His comments are helpful, and he actually appreciates it if you write with humour. Along with well backed up intelligent argument, of course. Also, I taught for him, and trust me - he recognizes and cares about his junior students.

Really full of himself so don't bother asking any questions because he takes it as an insult that you didn't understand him. Blech. Stay away from him! (What's with the clothing critiques, anyway?)

Avoid this prof at all cost unless you enjoy lectures where the prof makes all the texts related to homosexuality or sex. However, you can't blame him because his PhD was on sex in literature by Marlowe. The only reason most people got by in his class was because of the insightful and helpful TA's!
Smart, funny, helpful, cute. I loved him.

Really nice and helpful
worst prof so far
I actually think he is a great Prof. Class is pretty fun and you never feel sleepy. His jokes are great... you just have to be a tad more cynical than the average person.
Hilarious prof, very entertaining. Read the material and attend lectures and you've got an A if you can write in the least.
He makes us work but we learn a lot. Very smart, very funny, very nice.

Amazing professor! Very funny, insightful, and made this early morning class worth getting up for. I would without question take a class with him again. Heck, I would even take this course with him again if they'd let me.
A legend in his own mind.
Great prof. Extremely engaging, and always interesting. He is very smart and funny, and the class will always be entertaining. I totally recommend his class, because you end up learning a lot -- despite what you might think. Great person as well...we all ended up going drinking with him the last day of classes! Take this class!
Hilarious!
Probably the most engaging prof at UBC. Intelligent, funny, fabulous. Hard to get in to his course, but persistence pays off. Course not recommended for the narrow minded or the faint of heart. Looked forward to it every day, discussion/lecture style is ideally formulated to be useful and fun. You have missed out big time if you have never had him.
he teaches the same book he wrote his phd thesis on
Quite intimidating in class but surprisingly gentle in office hours. Tough marker, doesn't really provide much feedback on how to improve. Engaging lectures. Chooses favourites.
great prof, great class. Very funny and entertaining. Can be harsh for the weak-minded, don't take his classes if you are sensitive. Don't take any English classes if you are sensitive.
He teaches the same work he's an expert on? Horrors of horrors! Seriously, Stephen is great entertainment during his lectures, but is surprisingly approachable outside the classroom, too. You also learn quite a bit. For instance, after death, do you know what happens to your eyes? Hint: It involves crows.
funny guy, excellent lecturer. can't rate this guy on his marking because your papers are marked by the TAs, not him.
The best professor I have had at UBC, and this coming from a Science Major. Opened my eyes to literature and allowed me to see for the first time what the fuss was all about. Makes you feel poetry. Looked forward to class every day. Funniest guy alive, insightful, and helpful. Take him.
Hilarious prof, makes lectures very intesting. TA was not helpful, but he was a super easy marker. Not hard to get an A.. just go to lectures!!!!!!!!! and read the texts, obviously.
I love this guy. He is very funny, class itself is very interesting. Just read the text and attend the class, it's enjoyable! TAKE HIM. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
very arrogant and scary!! he will point out people and ask questions that are so obvious no one wants to answer, then makes fun of the class for not answering. Do NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you value your GPA and your sanity.
Strict marker. He has a sense of humour that made the class interesting, but I got used to it by the first month and it wasn't that funny anymore. Other people laughed still so I'd assume it was enjoyable. He knows his material. Very insightful about what we were learning.
This guy is both awesome and certifiable. He's a wicked teacher, absolutely knows his stuff, and has a great (albeit weird) sense of humor. He is super intimidating though. Go in prepared to feel a bit stupid.
Laugh out loud funny! He's witty and sarcastic. Talks about sex. He's crazy learned in poetry - wENill recite random poems in latin out of no where. Don't really need to read before class because what we do is read and analyze the poems together for the 45 mins. I can't say I got much out of it other than a B+, but at least i was entertained.
You will never be bored in lecture. Incredibly intelligent and witty. Had the whole class laughing on a regular basis. Somehow he managed to create a seminar-like atmosphere in a huge lecture hall of over a hundred. I've never seen a prof engage students like that before! People regularly spoke up, and I loved his responses. He is a true asset.
The lectures are very inspirational but a little disorganized, since he is just providing ideas for you to actually think about it and make them into an essay. I think the marking mainly depends on the TA that you are working with. Overall, he is a very good english professor.
Lecture consists of Dr. Guy-Bray talking about the play/short story/poem the class is reading during that week. Goes into some super deep and interesting ideas which can really help when you are writing your essay. Overall a very solid professor.
Loved his sense of humor and the delivery of his lectures although his humor is not for everyone. Would add a lot of related facts or bytes of knowledge.
Dr. Guy-Bray is an absolute icon. If you like clear guidelines and a more traditional learning environment, maybe steer clear. Lectures are all over the place and have lots of fun anecdotes and strong opinions but are backed up with really interesting insights from a prodigious mind. Super fun class environment and lots to be learned here.
I love Dr. Guy Bray! The paper topics/mid term questions are always very broad, allowing students to explore works on their own accord. He answers emails promptly, and is very easy to approach. He's also very witty. I recommend his class 110%. The only criticism I have for SGB is that his essay feedback is a little too general.
Lectures are interesting and Prof. Guy-Bray does give some analysis into the works he teaches, but he is very disorganized. He is disorganized in the sense that there is no canvas page or syllabus specific to his couse. He doesn't reply to emails or communicate well with his TAs. Not too hard a class but prof couldn't care less about it.
His lectures were asynchronous so there wasn't really an opportunity to make a connection, but he was helpful with emails. Lectures were entertaining (especially the snarky remarks he'd just throw in unexpectedly lol)... He's mostly easygoing. For headphone users: mute every time he coughs or your ears suffer the consequences.
Prof Guy-Bray is an absolute legend. He doesnt keep a canvas page which can be problematic, but everything is in the syllabus. Top notch lectures, they're entertaining, interesting, funny, and on topic. Show up to class and pay attention, notes arent mandatory, he discusses only what he finds important. Offers some solid banter back if you're vocal
I didn't like Dr. Guy-Bray at all. He might be nicer or funnier in person but his lectures were dry and endless. Recommendation: watch him on double speed, this will save you loads of time. He covers too many works in his course instead of focussing and really analyzing a few in depth. His TA was really unfair and harsh. If you can, avoid him.
Guy-Bray's lectures were funny though boring at times, and since they were asynchronous it was hard to gain the motivation to watch. My TA was a really tough grader, but offered decent feedback and good information. The content is interesting if you enjoy literature. Good course to improve essay skills and writing about written works.
The absolute best English prof- he's funny, insightful, and inspires passion in the material. I always looked forward to his lectures. I came out of the course with not only a greater appreciation of Milton, but also an arsenal of hilarious quips and witticisms. He's also approachable and gives out good advice during office hours.
i really enjoyed professor guy-bray's english 100 class. he does not have a canvas and communicates through email announcements a couple times a week, and there are very few assignments in the class i took. expect a lot of reading, but overall a really chill teaching style.
Stephen is so, so incredib...ly tenured.
One of the most hilarious professors, really engaging and straightforward. 3 essays and a final, the final was discussed in class. Our entire class loved him.
This prof is hilariously sassy. His lectures are super interesting and a pleasure to attend. However, grading criterias are ambiguous and he only gives you a letter grade and some feedback.
I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS I LOVE THIS GUY. IF STEPHEN HAS 1 MILLION FANS I'M ONE OF THEM. IF STEPHEN HAS 1 FAN THAT ONE IS ME. IF STEPHEN HAS NO FANS THEN I AM DEAD. He's such a funny teacher and while he marks a little hard he'll give you tons of feedback if you go talk to him. He's the reason I'm back into poetry :))
Started the term hating poetry, and ended up loving it because of his fun lectures. He jokes a lot and genuinely seeks to connect with students. I would absolutely take another class with him.
Professor Guy-Bray somehow made reading the entirety of Paradise Lost enjoyable, so enough said. But honestly, he's very down to earth and easy to communicate with outside of class, I do wish he gave more detailed feedback and had more info about expectations on the syllabus but other than that he's great.
Overall a great class. He's funny, insightful, and encourages participation. My impression of Paradise Lost has shifted from one of indifference (despite having read some of it for another class) to one of interest. I did find him a tough grader, and he could provide better feedback. It's quite difficult to improve on essays.
Lectures were engaging and he's funny. LOTS of readings so get ready to read. 3 essays and a final which was in person and 2 essays in 2 hours. Found that a bit challenging but overall not too bad. The essays were another thing though, TAs marked harsh so was hard to improve. Prof was good, class was ok wouldnt take again tho again tanked my gpa :(
Dr. Guy-Bray is very very intelligent professor and quite engaging in class. His grading can be a bit tough and seem picky at times, but he was always very approachable in office hours. I feel I was a bit in over my head in terms of course content though, be ready to read very dense texts.
Funny prof. and interesting material.
BEWARE- AVOID AT ALL COSTS! There was no syllabus, no rubric or guidelines, nothing. Graded on 3 essays + final. EXTREMELY harsh marking and doesn't give more than 1 line of feedback on papers. No one knew what he wanted and everyone struggled. He is an entertaining lecturer but a horrible prof. If you want to keep your GPA, choose another prof
His lectures are so entertaining (he's hilarious) and you learn so much about poetry. 1-2 short poems to read for each class - some are a bit complex but he explains them really well in class so don't worry if you don't get them on your first reading. Doesn't give a lot of guidelines/feedback on essays but trust me this class is "poetry fun time"
There was only 3 essay i needed to do this class and a final. the prof is a funny man
I'm in engineering and took this course instead of WRDS 150. Worked out because I got a good grade but wouldn't recommend 110 if you dont like English and more importantly if you are not good at it. Prof is extremely funny tho. Grading is very TA dependent.
Dr. Guy-Bray is a funny guy but there is no reason to go to lecture because he just talks about whatever comes to mind for an hour and it has nothing to do with anything that contributes at all to any grade. I had a good time in this course because my TA rocked but yeah at least the time I spent not in lecture gave me more time to write my essays.
Heavily recommend this Professor! Very fun lectures and the short stories given were easy to write about and had clear intent behind their choice.
