Truly great prof!
He sucks.
He was the most boring professor I have ever had. I dreaded going to his class
This guy was horrible. His lectures lasted 2 hours and were the most boring I had ever heard. Not to mention how hard his tests were. Avoid if at all possible!
Gives a lot of work and requires a lot of studying.
good prof, if you pay attention. you have to be somewhat interested in learning about rocks and dirt or it is boring. he helps those who want to learn.
keep up the good work Dr. Steve. May the force be with you and focus on the TAO!!!
What a cutie. Made it interesting study of rocks.
If you wanna learn geology you will learn something, if you wanna sleep in the back of the class and try to BS your way through then he is not the prof to take.
The course material is definitely not the most interesting, but if you demonstrate a wont to learn he'll be good to ya. Very helpful with personal problems.
Great teacher if you are willing to listen well and study hard. Loves his subject. Likes his students. I liked his classes a lot.
Boring class, fun guy. Beware, the tests are pretty hard.
Dr. Harper is a really nice guy. Be quiet when he tells you to because if not, he might get a little anal. The class is really boring, but he really knows his stuff. You will not be able to BS the class. The test are really hard, so you must study.
He's a really nice guy, however extremely boring. As long as you come to class and try a little bit you can squeak a C. Very hard to pay attention though!! Has a 12 point grading scale that really helps, and willing to work with you.
Corny, yet funny at times. Tests are VERY hard - moderate studying wont cut it here. All notes are on Blackboard, but it is still wise to go to class. Im sure someone who studied a bit more than me and is good with memorization can pull an easy B.
VERY VERY VERY boring. Very hard to stay awake in class, I'm surprised I didnt get whip lash from trying to stay awake.
Although it requires a lot of time and intelligence to do well in this class, it is well worth it. Dr. Harper does an excellent job if presenting this less-than-exciting material, and has been my favorite prefessor thus far.
Awesome Professor, knows a lot about Geology. The tests and quizzes arent super easy but if you study, and do all the quizzes, its easy to get an A in the class. It does require studying to get an A in but what class doesnt?
Great guy. He really knows his stuff. And the test are hard, but he will help you with anything you need. I got an A in both classes w/out too much effort.
REALLY HARD, Go to class. Do all assignments. Study hard. Only way to get an A. Otherwise, VERY nice and helpful.
His class is really easy as long as you study and do your work. You don't have to study hard at all, just study. If you do the quizs and read the homework keys, it's exactly what is on the test word for word. He's really nice too. Easy class.
you have to: READ THE EMAIL ATTACHMENTS--before class, take good notes IN CLASS, SHOW UP EVERY DAY, and study like HELL for tests. He is fair and is a very good teacher--BUT this is NOT an Easy A!!
Don't even bother paying attention, its too boring! Test are hard, but if you do the other assignments, go to class, and review the old tests (from Joyner Reserve) then you should be fine.
his class is easy he gives you all the notes and you don't have to buy the book but his exams are not all that easy so you have to study
dr. harper knows his stuff but he bores u to death. he shows slides of the same thing everyday. take home quizzes arent that bad. exams are REALLY HARD! u dont have to buy the book, but u do have to print off a lot of stuff for this class. overall the class was VERY BORING!!
the. worst. class. ever. i got a 36 on the last test, and the highest grade was a 90, with most of the class scoring 70 or below. canNOT stay awake in his class. nice guy, but sucks @ teaching. get out if you still can. this class killed my GPA.
Boring, Boring, and more Boring. When ever you take his class be sure to pack a pillow. He just goes on and on for nothing and his test are very hard. He also must be from a warm climate, or just get the seasons mixed up.
horrible class iv had him 2 sem. he is so boring u will never want to go to class his test are hard as hell and if u don;t go to class u won't make above a c b/c he gives quizes, there r better professors out there
he's a nice guy and grades on a 12pt scale. the tests are hard and the lectures are really long and boring.
Sit in the front, go to class, study the past exams he gives you links to, and memorize all of the petty numbers in the notes because he will test on them. He's nice, but you have to memorize a lot of information for this class.
Dr. Harper is one of the best professors I have ever had! The lectures can get boring, but it's geology, and he makes it as exciting as he can. He really wants you to love it as much as he does. You have to study to do well, but its worth it!
Dr. Harper is very funny and easy-going. His tests can be extremely hard but if you study hard, go to class and take copious notes, you should make out with a B. You will have to work for it, though. He's also very helpful and wants you to do well. Funny guy too.
Prof. Harper is the most boring professor I have ever had. You have to go to class in order to get the quizzes, but listening to him for 2 hours will make you want to scream. If you have the option, take a different professor.
Hard, Hard, Hard. did I mention Hard. Is willing to help out girls more than guys. Even tells girls "look over your test and if you accidentally messed up, let me know." Not very willing to help outside of class, even during office hours, which s what office hours are there for. Expects you to
Amazing professor. Interesting lectures, knows his stuff, easy to get along with...
Expects you to become a geologists
Harper is a great teacher and gets you excited about the class because you can tell he really wants to be there and help you out.
He's a really nice guy and very helpful. The tests are hard, because there's so much material to study. But he gives plenty of take home quizzes and activities to bring those test grades up. I'll probably take him again.
AWESOME!!!! If you get him DO NOT CHANGE TEACHERS!! the classes can be boring but youre learning about rocks....so what did you expect? he makes class as interesting as he can. if you try you will get a good grade. honestly, he basically hands you an A with color coded notes, homework, and quizzes. he always sends out past exams. and if you take th
Not bad, kinda goofy!
i love Dr. Harper!! he's so funny and yes the class can be boring but he makes it the most fun he can. there are 4 tests, and a bunch of easy take home quizzes to help bring up your grade. if i had to take another geology class i would DEFINITELY take him again! no attendance policy but takes it anyway, in case he wants to reward you at the end.
not a bad teacher at all...really knows his stuff on geology and really really LOVES it, so be prepared..Gives a lot of easy quizzes in class so be prepared to show up to all classes...TEST ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION, and everything is given in pages of pages of notes typed by him..overall though he is a good teacher
Great teacher, e-mails notes, study guides, and the study guide keys. Gives open note quizzes. Tests are not hard if you study the notes, study guides and previous tests that he also e-mails you. Dr. Harper is a great teacher, he really loves his Geology so dont mess with him. Don't talk or let your cell phone go off cause he doesn't like that.
One of the nicest professors out there. He is always well prepared and knowledgable with a passion for geology. His tests can be a little tricky due to having to study so much information, but he is very good teacher. I took him twice.
I dread going to that class. He has got to be one of the most boring professors I've had so far. His lectures seem to go one forever so unless you are truly interested in geology avoid this professor. If you can suppress the want to kill yourself during this class you can probably get a C with minimal studying.
This class is so boring, in about 20 minutes half of the class is asleep! There is no need to go to class, I only learn from the notes which he sends online, but he makes you attend class because he gives take home quizzes and assignments. The tests are not too hard but all he shows is pictures, I didn't learn anything while in the class.
he's a nice teacher, you should definitley attend class because he takes attendance randomly or pretty much everyday and you never know when he is going to hand out a take-home assignment! other than that, he knows what he's talking about and teaches well (and yes! he does show a lot of pictures for the visual learners).
Great teacher, Great class
Go to class, sit up front and you will make an A in this class. He is very nice, thoughtful and if you ever need anything just go ask him. He is always willing to lend a hand. He also doesn't use a text book. Come on, take him!
go to class, he sends around a attendance sheet everyday, and frequently sends home take hom quizzes, his class isn't hard just boring and if you're not an auditory learner than it'll be tough because all he does is lecture, he does show alot of pictures though, i would try to get someone else before taking him
Dr. Harper is a beast! He is an amazing professor, and he's so quarky that haing his class 9:30 in the morning was no problem. He sends you online notes, he uses lots of visuals to help teach, and he's very easy to understand. He does give a quiz every tuesday at least, and they're very easy, so show up to get them! Study for the tests, too.
Dr. Harper is a wonderful professor for both audial and visual learners. He requires no textbook and all the notes used in his class are sent via email to his students. Dr. Harper realizes that his GEOL 1500 course is just introductory; he doesn't require everyone to learn everything. His material is exactly is what is tested...Very good teahcer
Easily the most boring class I've ever been in. If I didn't have an iPod, I would have never showed up. He spends half the time lecturing/going off on tangents, and the other half sharing his vacation photos.
Horrible!! Teaches absolutely nothing in class, shows pictures of his vacations and goes off on tangents about the peace core everyday. Notes are sent via email but every exam is on over 300 pages of information that you have to learn yourself. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Harper is an excellent teacher. If you've had him for 1500, then Geomorph is the same way just more self-study. He also hates people talking and cell phones, so none of them.
He is so boring. He just talks and talks. He spent like a whole class showing his vacation pictures. I did other stuff in the class. No textbook. Test are okay, it is just lots of info. I would take him again because he is not that hard.
Good place to take a nap.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. IT IS HARD. HE GIVES NO STUDY GUIDES AND HE IS BORING. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
If he sends out one more environmentalist chain letter to our entire class, I'm going to SCREAM. But class is easy; he sends out last semester's test before each test, so if you do that to practice, the tests are a breeze. I have to bring another book to stay awake in class, though.
Ok Dr. Harper is a cool teacher and he really enjoys what he is doing, but he expects you to memorize everything he teaches. it really sucks because he gives you so much. he doesnt give study guides for tests either. not recommended unless you love geology
Ok Dr. Harper is a cool teacher and he really enjoys what he is doing, but he expects you to memorize everything he teaches. it really sucks because he gives you so much. he doesnt give study guides for tests either. not recommended unless you love geology
Doesn't use a textbook. Emails you roughly 15-20 pages a week of notes he's written that go along with his class, along with a study guide for each subject, and a study guide key. COME TO CLASS. He has test questions that he only gives info for in class. Hard, but study his notes you'll be fine.
Dr. Harper was okay. His tests were pretty easy but he gives you a lot of notes. It's a lot of printing and a waste of ink. He likes to listen to himself talk and basically shows you pictures (he took) of rocks all class period. Really boring but easy to do well.
nice guy, LOVES to talk, classes are boring but attendence is mandatory and he gives out random quizes. sends RIDICULOUS amounts of notes and tests are pretty hard.
Harper is amazing. He knows so much and is willing to get to know you on a name-to-name basis. He's a funny professor with a bunch of stories to tell. He's been all over Asia and has experienced a lot! His tests are fairly easy. Take notes, listen in class, go to class an you'll be having a pretty easy time.
nice guy but will talk you to death! class is real boring and test are hard even unless you are good at memorizing notes.
This professor is very hard. His tests are rediculous. This was obviously a required course! NEVER AGAIN!
I love Dr. Harper. He is so cute and friendly. He makes notes for you. Attendance is mandatory and he gives out quizzes to help your grade. Easy class
He is a good teacher. His quizes are take home and as long as you listen and study those quizes you'll be fine.
good guy
i love dr.harper! if you get on his good side (i did) you will become a favorite. he will definitely talk your ear off. i thought he was a hilarious creature of a man. test are not really that bad. all you have to do is memorize the notes. his quiz's will help your grade. take him!
Dr.Harper is so nice. I got to really know him as a person and loved him. He really cares about his students and remembers things about them...even in a section with about 100 kids in it! As far as the class though, I hated it. It was SO boring. You don't have a textbook but you waste so many trees in this class! The tests were ridiculously hard!
Mr. Harper is the best! He is such a sweet man and will go completely out of his way to help you. He gives you an old test as a study guide before every test except the final exam. He gives take home quizzes and drops the lowest 2. Awesome Professor!
Dr. Harper definitely knows his stuff. Makes jokes during class. Expect to study a little, but overall interesting.
Field camp is no joke, people. It's hard work: camping, hiking, and mapping your butt off...all that aside: Dr.Harper is a great professor. He knows what he's talking about and often times is extremely helpful in the field. I learned so much about Geologic Mapping from him and my interest in geoscience has skyrocketed since taking the class.
I had him for Geomorph, and i love him :) this is the 2nd class i have had with him! he expects you to study and work hard, but it pays off. pay attention to what he says in class bc when he rambles it might be important! great man who really seems to care!
I love Dr. Harper! He is fantastic and looks like Einstein. Quizzes are all take home and they really boost your grade. The tests are pretty easy too as long as you go over the quizzes and study guide..that he always sends out! I'm taking him again next semester. He is also very willing to help you outside of class
Take-home quizzes are a Godsend- they're easy, but generally cover everything that you'll be tested on. Aside from acting as a study guide, they really help out your grade. In class, however, he gets on tangents and can be difficult to understand when taking notes.
Stephen Harper is a good teacher. You have to actually like geology to have fun. Go to class. Take home quizzes are easy.Study hard for the exam. There is alot of material on his test and they are not multiple choice except for the final.
I went to the first 2 weeks of class and declared i would not return until test days he is the most boring professor ever encountered hes nice but thats it i would not suggest him to any1 try for some1 else unless you need to catch up on sleep
Dr. Harper is a good professor overall. He can get longwinded and tends to get sidetracked with stories that aren't relevant to the material we're learning, but I find his class interesting and I enjoy going to his class. Quizzes are take home, open note, which are easy As, however, tests are very difficult. Make sure you study.
Dr.Harper aka (the monopoly man). Take the lab with the lecture it will help to clarify the in class material. Harper is always willing to help when you have issues. If you don't do well on his first test go to his office hours!
Love him! He's an adorable teacher who loves this subject. I took the class without doing the lab and did fairly well. He emails the notes and i found it helpful to print them off as you went. Attending class is good because he tests on stuff he says in class. If he takes a liking to you he grades easy.
class is pretty boring but you learn useful information. i feel like i could have passed without going once. quizzes are pretty much homework. study a good bit for the tests and you should be fine
Easiest class in all four years. No book, he emails you the documents you need for each section. Twelve simple take home quizzes. Dr. Harper is passionate about the material and is fun to learn from. Interesting and very easy class.
He emails you all the notes prior to class. You get 12 take home quizzes throughout the semester and all the answers come from the notes. You take a total of 4 exams including the final. The final exam is not cumulative its just on the final chapters.
Emails you everything. No textbook needed. 12 take home quizzes, but drops 2 lowest. tests are worth 18% each, final (not cumulative) worth 26%. Good professor, gives sample tests to study from. Test are multiple choice/short answer(fill in's and diagrams). two online assignments, pretty easy. Takes attendance every day
Dr. Harper knows what he is doing and is very helpful if you visit him during office hours. He likes to talk a lot and rambles about things but sends notes out before every class. Tests are almost straight from the notes with a random question he mentions in class thrown in as well. Studying is necessary but if you do then you should pass.
Dr. Harper is such a great professor. He really knows his stuff and you can tell how much he loves to teach. He is a very odd little man though, and you will hardly ever catch him in anything other than shorts and flip flops. His tests are pretty hard but if you do the study guide you should be fine.
He is seriously the sweetest little old man you'll ever meet!! He gives 12 quizzes and there are 2 tests and a non-cumulative final. Coming from a non science major I thought the tests were so hard! Near impossible if you don't do a lot of studying but not awful. You can get through it if you're willing to work.
Do not take him! tests are very difficult and he asks very random and obscure questions that you wouldnt think youd have to know. Hes sweet but also annoying. Hes smart but doesnt know how to teach
This guy really sucks. He emails everything so have fun searching your inbox constantly. His notes are horrible; he color codes every other sentence, makes it look like a pack of zebra gum. The tests are not easy and asks very obscure questions. The lab is equally difficult. I've been on Deans list every semester at ECU, trust me, take biology.
Very enthusiastic teacher, but the class is so boring it's hard to follow along or stay awake. Quizzes are easy but no matter how much I study for a test I still normally fail. No blackboard, no textbook. DEFINITELY has favorites ( students in first row) who he talks to and teaches to the most. If you sit in the back you won't hear him.
The quizzes very easy since they are take home but the tests are super hard. I went to class everyday sat in the front row and went to tutoring twice a week and studied a lot before the test, still couldn't get above a 64. I wouldn't recommend this class!
It's a very boring class, but he gives you all the notes and homework keys (homework he gives is optional to do). He gives you take homes quizzes and drops the two lowest. The test are hard but if you look over the notes well you'll be fine. His grading scale is you can have a 76 and still make a B-
I love Professor Harper, with that being said his class is hard if you don't study hard. He takes his geology very seriously. He's funny and nice and if you need help go to his office hours, it's incredibly helpful. Taking good notes will help you and homework and study guides are the tests.
I love him as a person but when it comes to tests you better know what you're doing. Really hard to understand but if you work for it and read the notes you can pass with a good grade. I wish I would have worked harder in the beginning!
All your grade consists of are basically tests. Your quiz average can bring you up since they are take home quizzes but those are basically the only two grades you have. He doesn't provide study guides and in class he does not explain notes well by mumbling and rambling off.
I think people are rating Dr. Harper off of their dislike for Geology and not him as a professor. You do not have any homework except for take home quizzes (which go EXACTLY by the notes). He sends out old exams for you to study by. His grading system is very lenient (more than 10 pt). If you study the old exams you will be fine!
The class was adequate.
There is a lot of information but he knows what he is talking about and will give you as much material needed to help. Can be long winded but means well
Very nice man. Tests can be hard if you don't thoroughly study the packets. There are multiple choice and some short answers such as fill in the blank on every test. If you just study your packets over and over before test day you'll be just fine! Occasionally he'll say something in class and hint to you that they'll be asked on the test.
Lectures are long and dry. Go to class because he gives out take home quizzes and uses attendance as a grade. Tests are somewhat hard, but he gives you old exams.
Harper is the bomb dot com
funny guy, great teach
Good class
A great teacher, very funny and explains things well. Powerpoints are a little heavy on content and repetitive. Take home quizzes he gives you are straight from notes and usually easy.
Dr. Harper is a wonderful professor and really cares about his students as long as you put forth the effort. His lectures are normally set up pretty well and are interesting. His office hours are great if you don't understand something, he'll make sure you understand whatever it is before you leave. Absolutely wonderful Professor!
He is an awesome person but his class is the most difficult class ive taken in my life. I make all A's and B's but somehow managed to get an F in this class. Never passed any of the exams because the questions asked are so bizarre.
He is a great guy but is tests are SO hard. You have to study so much to pass and the study guides he gives you are so long. He gives quizzes in class to take home so attendance is a must to get a good grade.
I even made friends with the guy, thinking he'd help me out. NO. Be ready to study your tail off to pass those tests. I made 100's on EVERYTHING, but the tests. Ended up with a C-.
Harper really knows what he is talking about! I have never had a professor that knew so in depth what they were teaching. If you study the quizzes (which he gives back with corrections) and the homework (which is optional) you will make good grades on the tests. There can be a lot of material so it can be a bit of a challenge but this is college.
I ended up really liking this class. We have a quiz due every class but it really helps your grade because they are easy and in the notes THAT HE SENDS TO YOU! I didnt take notes a day in class and made an A in the class. He sends out an old exam before each exam (with most of the same questions). He is a little odd and lectures are boring.
we all would like to not go to class and do absolutely nothing to get an A. NOT this class. Go to class, do the take home quizzes, study the quizzes and old exam he sends out and you'll do fine on the exams. I recommend this class. work hard, receive a good grade. lectures are long and boring, try and pay attention. overall great class
Try and pay attention in class, he asks random questions in class that you would ONLY know if you listened in class. FYI his friend from the Peace Corp, his name is Buddy. Yes that was a question on an exam, lol. Don't know if I enjoyed the class, but I did enjoy the good grades I received. He sends out alot of information, read it! Does not use Bb
Harper is a very caring professor. He will get to know you by name if you show face here and there. ATTEND class, because everything from his tests and exams are straight from his slides. If I paid more attention in class I would've gotten a better mark for sure. He is also understanding, and his lectures aren't boring because he's passionate.
I've had Harper TWICE (1700&1500) so trust me when I say his class is not that hard, everything on the tests is usually on the practice exams he gives you or in the notes, some things he says in class but thats maybe 5 points on a test so just study maybe 2 nights and the night before the test and you're golden. Hes very devoted dont let it scare u
I took GEOL 1500 with Dr. Haper, and I loved this class so much! It's very similar to high school style, he provides you notes with powerpoint and you don't need to waste money on textbooks! He gives "quiz" at end of the class and that's due the next class. All the answers are in the notes, and the exams ar easy to pass as long you study the notes.
He is an awful professor, the tests are very hard and complete opposite of the study guide. For the final he doesn't even give you a study guide. He doesn't use blackboard and sends everything out by email, he doesn't give you your grade until the very last day of class. He doesn't respond to any emails, I sent him three and never got a response.
He gives you take home quizzes for every unit studied which really improves your grade.
Doctor Harper cares a lot about rocks. Like seriously from day one you can tell how excited he gets when talking about rocks. He oversees all of the labs as well (He even wrote the textbook) so if you're taking the lab with the lecture he typically stays on track with the lab. Quizzes every other class-ish with optional homework and a few exams.
this guy is tough when it comes to grading. overall the class hard if you don't care for rocks, simply because the topic is so boring. but then again i'm not a geology major, i took the class because i needed a science class
Dr. Harper was a sweet man but his lectures were very heavy. The material was very boring to learn and his test were nothing like the practice he sent out. Test were almost impossible to study for but the daily take home quizzes he gives out and attendance help your grade a lot. His grading scale is different due to the fact that his class is hard.
Always answered his email. Was willing to give me extended time on assignments when I was out sick . Gave extra credit opportunities for the whole class. Overall very understanding and fair.
If you are not a geology do not take him. The tests are the complete opposite of the study guide and the tests cover so much information. If you need a science without a lab this is not the class for you.
If you arent a geology major he doesnt care about you. NEVER answers his emails (Ive emailed him 4 times and not one response). Test are somewhat easy but study more than he tells you to. Leactures are long and boring and youll lose interest in the first 5 minutes. Literally take any other course but whatever you do, DO NOT take this class.
I loved Dr. Harper's class. Print out the notes before class and write down important stuff he says. Take home quizzes are easy and if you come to class it will boost your grade because he takes attendance. Good class to take if you need a science without a lab, just study! Sit in the front and you'll do fine.
Dr. Harper is a really nice guy but he is easily distracted and gets very off topic. Within the first 5 minutes of class, everyone is on their phone or sleeping. The only people that actually pay attention are the people that sit in the front because most are geology majors. Quizzes are super easy but tests are difficult.
