tests were very unclear and that classes were boring

he makes no sense, very boring...read the book or you'll be lost
This class is VERY boring. TESTS MAKE NO SENSE!!!! BTW, he has a wierd smile
he's a lil kooky-takes attendance-only way i understood was by reading the book.
take some no-dose before class!!
SOOOO boring. dresses wierd, tests are pulled out of his butt

HE IS THE WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD!! Dont take him - trust me on this one.
a total waste of my time
Man is a little weird, but he's a good teacher. Easy A if you read the book.
Interesting material; boring lectures; hard tests; 1 paper; LOTS of reading
Anyone who can pass a High School level Sociology class can get an A in this.
A lot of reading, boring lectures, hard, long paper but he grades it very easily
Not that bad. did well on the paper just read the book did better than i expecte
BORING! Easy, but so boring.
The worst teacher i have had at towson.
He's so easy and sweet! he may go off on tangents every once in a while, but he lets class go early sometimes and is really nice all around. Easy tests, cool way of grading!
attendance policy (which gives you points), 3 tests that are fairly easy you read a little. just go to class and turn in the 5-6 page paper.
nice guy; easy grader, 3 easy tests..read the book and come to class;one 5 pg paper
Annoying personality. Lectures about theorists but doesn't actually explain them well. Fair amount of work but grades easy.
pretty easygoing.. if you want to push the due dates back on anything, just ask him, he'll most likely do it. a little quirky, but explains things okay.

very happy and nice - take notes and read - tests are tough but he curves them - will help anytime if you need it
VERY QUIRKY...a dork, but an easy class. READ and you'll get an A
Boring classes unless you make yourself excited. Most of the time, he is the only one that talks. Engage him in a brief discussion and you will earn points. Kind of nerdy, but a nice guys. Teaches all the way until the end of class.
Worst teacher I ever had. Makes no comments on papers, but hand them back with bad grades. Never available for contact by any form, phone, e-mail, office hours. Tests are ridiculous and each test has 16 pages worth of essays. Made me hate urban soci
Could have been an interesting class but was not. He was too hard and expected too much from the class. There was a lot of work (essays, tests, 12 page paper). Don't take this class if you can help it.
interesting teacher, attendence is mandatory, mostly just talks to himself about this out of the books, tests can be a lil confusing
Easy class as long as you do the assigned readings. No reason why you couldn't get an A. He can get a lil long winded but overall good class.
Difficult class. On the one hand, I can't fault him for wanting to challenge us and get us to really learn the material. On the other hand, the class really stressed me out. Don't expect an easy ride in this class.
So boring...very confusing...but grades easy on the things we turn in! Do the readings and you have to do reader responses. Right now I have a low C and I do the work!
Good teacher, tests not to bad, tends to talk a little bit to much maybe becuase I have an early class!
VERY nice. Doesn't give busy work, midterm, 12pg paper, and final only. Tells you exactly what is on test. Lectures without interacting with class, but is a good guy and will answer questions. I would take another class with him...
He is a very boring guy but also very easy. attendance is mandatory but grades very leanient, i would take him again.
Hot, in an unusual way!!! Very smart, wants everyone to do well. Kinda dry in lec, but still wonderful=)
He is nice, but so weird. I am still convinced that he is ****! Though he is married. Lectures are so boring (make sure you bring some other work to do. Do the work and study and you will be fine!
Really great teacher. I learned a lot. Tests are extremely hard!!!!! You will learn a lot but don't take it if youre not willing to do a lot of work and studying.
He is a very nice guy, always positive about things. But he assigns soooo much reading. One midterm and one final with 3 essays for each. There is a 12 page paper due to. To much work, sucked
This teacher is somewhat annoying. He gets real excited over stupid things and always enters the class saying 'questions...comments?' It's ashame he takes attendance, cause you could pass just by doing the assigned readings.
kinda creepy and very boring teacher. very enthusiastic about the subject which is a plus because he can give you lots of examples off the top of his head, especially for your final paper. i didnt read anything nor took notes and got a "B-"
Nice guy, lectures the entire class, tests were hard, but he covers the info and curves big time. Make sure to drink a lot of soda or an energy drink or bring a comy pillow!
soooo confusing! He knows what he is talking about but doesn't know how to teach. Tests are horrible but paper is easy.
Alot of writing especially at the end of course. Boring.
Quirky, but really nice. Lectures are interesting. I would definitely take again. Has 13 1 pg. journals & a 5 pg. paper. Does take attendence.
He phrases things in the tests so they twist in your mind even if you study. Though the lectures are good, he writes down notes on board so you don't have to look in the text. But I do personally. If you don't like to study much take this class because only the kids who don't study succeed.
i took this class a few years ago and slept away the entire semester. then i got into a bad habit of not showing up. and the papers i handed in were **** on my part. with that in mind, i still got a B+. in retrospect, i do kinda regret it. the guy was extremely likeable and the topic interesting

You can't follow his train of thought he goes off on tangents about unrelated topics!
This class is made for sleeping! I felt bad though b/c he is a really nice guy but he loves to talk and he'll talk for the entire class about a whole bunch of nuthin! Just know the terms when you take the test and go to class (as boring as it may be!!!) He's a pretty easy grader and attendance helps
Tests= very tricky wording. Expect a C+ on them even if you've taken Sociology before. Journals = piece of cake! Just read something out of the reader and say what you thought about it. Paper= Long, but can be about whatever comes to mind, no set requirements. Easy B.
Mini-mester class is an easy A. You don't even have to read because he reviews everything 20 times. Nice guy and interesting material. Glad I didn't take this class for a full semester. Not too much to learn. Just know the terms. Good teacher..
hardest tests in the world, soo confusing, couldnt get higher then 71 on them, cant get help from tutor cause knowing the terms doesnt matter the tests are too retarded. journals easy paper eh. got a c+, id say take someone else
Has no ability to answer questions with actual answers. Loves to hear himself talk and exert his role as prof., while expecting students to soak up his "knowledge". Teaches from the book (adds to inability to answer ?'s). Tries to fit in with students who are too busy sleeping. space-cadet.
Class was pretty interesting, he is an interesting character. Thought he was really wierd at first, but I like that he is different than more boring teachers. Does love to hear himself talk and goes out on tangents. Tests are tricky! Even if you read they dont make much sense, but he'll answer q's.
DO NOT TAKE. Very boring class with a TON of reading. The midterm was very tricky. One of the worst teachers i've had.
Horrible teacher! Do not take! I got A's in previous sociology courses. I worked hard and got a c+ in this one. If you do end up taking this class do not read material, it is a waste of time. No matter how knowledgeable you are about it, the tests do not relate.
Like someone else wrote, he LOVES to hear himself talk and will go on tangents (classes can be a bore) but he is extremely helpful and flexible. He pushed back our final paper and cut back on the # of essays on the final test simply because we asked him to. I recommend him and am taking him again.
You'll enjoy Hartmark, it won't be the intention, but you'll catch yourself laughing at his craziness. VERY helpful, straight to the point, and enjoys what he does. Definitely one of the better teachers at Towson.
He is a good & understanding teacher. No he won't hold your hand or spoon feed you, but he shouldn't have to.For those who said he was so hard, good luck in other sociology classes. Read and you will do fine.He does talk a lot, but that's because the class chooses not to participate. He is receptive to participation you just have to do it.
This class was great!!!! Reading the book really does help because the tests come from teh articles in the book...test questions can be tricky but a quick re-read clears up most problems...participating in class will keep you awake. You'll find yourself laughing at his quirkiness...I loved this class!
Easy class. 3 exams including the final, a paper, and a journal. Just do the journal and you get an A, study for the exams, and focus on the paper. Very quirky man. Very easy going.
Very easy class! I absolutly loved this class. Although he does tend to ramble on at times he is still very good at what he does. It is the first class I have ever had where I find myself actually using things I learned from a class in everyday life. It's a great class and professor Hartmark is a wonderful professor, I would recommend him to anyone
Nice guy! definitly quirky. He is great at going over the essencials for the test but make sure your read everything twice. The tests are tricky but not impossible. Study terms and articles and you will do fine. There are 14 journals and one 4 page paper due at the end of semester, do those and get 80's on the tests and you'll get an A.
Very Easy
annoying and his material doesnt make sense... no attendance policy though. 12 pages of writing for essays on his tests...HARD!!!!! would not recommend!!!
very helpful and understanding. A little boring, but a good gen ed to take
I didn't read one full chapter of the book and managed an A in this class. He's funny and the subject matter is interesting. You will have a relatively easy paper to write and 13 journals to turn in by the end of the semester. Overall I definitely recommend him!
His lectures can get a little off topic but altogether an interesting class. He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the subject. As long as you know the vocab & a couple studies you should be fine.
I don't know what kind of crack these people are on but Hartmark is the absolutely worst professor I have had at Towson in 3 years. He does not teach the material. Boring. Unclear about test material. Tests are HORRENDOUS and YOU WILL NOT receive any grade higher than a C. DO NOT TAKE!!! stay FAR FAR away! especially if this is your gened!
I recommend Hartmark for MINIMESTER! It was suuuper easy. We only had 3 exams and 1 5-page paper. There was no homework, just studying on your own. He tells you all the answers for the exams and what the questions will be however they are very wordy so it can be hard to understand at times. I recommend him for MINIMESTER!
This teacher is really bad when it comes to keeping the class amused. He also keeps you over the class time purposely to aggravate students, and continues to talk babel after everyone is ready to leave. I would not recommend him to anyone!
seriously i dont know what these people are talking about but this teacher is horrible. he writes random words on the board and is completelely incomprehensible. I studied for hours and never got above a C on any tests. I dont recommend him for anyone! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
The class is not hard if you just pay attention and take notes. He basically summarizes the chapters in class. The tests are sometimes difficult because the questions are worded weird with double negatives. But, they're 100% multiple choice, so go to class and take notes and you'll be fine.
He is a really good professor. I am a freshmen and his class is probably one of the only easy class. I scored a B on his first test without even reading the book. If you just pay attention to lecture and the words he writes on the board, examples he gives in class, you will be fine. P.S. just study the key terms at the end of each chapter before
Lame teacher, writing this during his class... easy grade but annoying class and waste of time. better sociology teachers..
Easy class as long as you read all of the chapters. Didnt really take notes in lectures, took my own notes and read the chapters on my own. Easy going, nice guy...only 3 tests, 13 journals, and 1 paper!
An excellent teacher of an interesting subject, and easy going too. Wile I cant say I found all of his lessons interesting, the content is there and he is willing to engage the class.
NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!!! class is easy, could learn all of the material on your own by reading the textbook. He was no help at all, so hard to stay awake in his class. Try to take another professor
worst professor i've EVER had.. showed up to every class cause he randomly has attendance.. journals are easy.. tests make NO SENSE.. they're all double negatives.. it's all pure luck and guessing.. i read the book took notes and still couldnt comprehend his test DONT TAKE HIM
Professor Hartmark is a very bad teacher. It is nearly impossible to follow him during his lectures, and it's hard to even understand the questions on the tests because he words them so awkwardly as if he's trying to trick you. I would not recommend him.
Lectures are a little hard to follow but over all the class is pretty easy. Takes attendance for most classes but tests multiple choice and are not that hard. If you go to class, do 13 one page journal entries (due at the end of the semester), and write your five page paper you'll get a decent grade.
Hated him. Most ridiculous professor ever. Writes nonsensical words on the board and calls it teaching. If you read the book you will be fine, but it's a waste of time to take notes in class. Attendance is mandatory even though the syllabus says nothing about it.
Pretty awesome teacher. He's willing to have awesome discussions if the class is willing to participate. Tests are really really easy, all multiple choice. Gave three 4 page papers with each test and a 15 page research paper at the end. Don't be afraid to talk, he really is open to hear anything.
Professor Hartmark is almost impossible to follow and words his test questions poorly. I would not recommend this teacher. He takes an easy class and makes it absolutely painful.
He makes really long pauses while lecturing, gets annoying. But he's a good teacher overall.
professor hartmark is ridiculous. his "questions...on stuff?" comment first thing ever class is enough to make you crazy. read the chapters and you'll be fine with answering in class. but the tests are almost impossible simply because the wording is insane.
Teacher is a little confusing and the journals are a pain to have to write. Read the text, do the journals, write the paper, and study and you should be fine. Oh and he takes attendance every class. Fairly easy class.
Fairly easy class. He does always do that "Questions! On stuff!" at the beginning of class. If you read the text and do the journals and final paper you should at least have a B. Test are worded very confusingly and he may randomly call upon you in class to say something about the topic. Attendance is mandatory
Be prepared to work. You will have to read the book word for word for the tests. tests are impossible to understand and very long. Attendance is MANDATORY. 8 page paper with lots of research. too much for a 101 class. nice guy though and willing to help
my friends and i absolutely hate the class. he talks every class but we have no clue what he is talking about he is confusing, alot of people complain about him, it is alot of reading and you are required to do journals on them which are annoying most, we mostly sit and laugh the whole class.
i loved hartmark. i dont even think he reads the final paper or journals and u can do extra journals to make up for attendance. i talked to him after class and told him i was doing bad on the tests and i needed a B and that was what i got. he is a nice guy
Hartmark is hard to follow if you don't pay attention. Reading the text is a MUST, taking notes is a MUST, if you take good notes and read the text, studying and tests won't be problematic. But pay attention from the beginning or else you WILL get lost
We had 2 12 page test and 3 multiple choice test. 1 15 page paper. If you read the text you dont even have to listen to what he says in class to pass the test. Nice guy, long papers are a bit annoying. Alot of work for a 200 level class, but it is intresting stuff.
I think he is very easy. Tests are all multiple choice and they are completely based on the study guides. If you go to class and take notes you're fine. Just read the textbook sections that are in the study guide. Journals are easy ways to boost your grade. Paper is only 5-6 pages.
I do not understand those who have had him for Soci 101 and are complaining... The class is definitely easy to begin with, and he makes it more interesting! He's a really nice guy and definitely willing to answer questions and interact with the class. The thing is, most people don't want to participate! I'm taking him again this semester! :)
Class was not necessarily difficult, but his lectures are completely incomprehensible. He does stick to the syllabus that he provides.. overall a nice guy but a terrible lecturer.
This is a really easy class. If you read the book you will get an A. The one essay he breaks down in parts. He is extremely nice and helps a lot!!
Good professor. Very willing to engage students. Passionate about sociology. Tests are easy but questions are worded weird. 3 exams (including final), and 1 5pg. paper. Take this class!
horrible.... his exams are all double negatives.... IMPOSSIBLE and not distinction between write and wrong answers, EXAMS are way to VAGUE!
Very nice guy. He is funny and quirky. I have NO IDEA anything that he was talking about during this entire course. If you read everything in the text book then you will do fine on his multiple choice tests. There is one 12 page paper and four 4 page essays.
I LOVE HARTMARK! Anyone who is complaining about him on here must be ridiculously lazy and have no sense of humor. The class is so easy, and he keepts it VERY interesting! He loves to have group discussions, and he'll answer any and all questions. he is ALWAYS willing to help, TAKE HIM! :)
His exams(multiple choice) are way too vague even though they're extremely long and confusing with double negatives. He's funny and nice but I honestly can't learn from his lectures. If you read the book you should be decent with at least a C.
His exams are multiple choice and all double negative questions. Even if you understand the material it's hard to do well on tests because of the wording. His lectures are very confusing and almost impossible to understand. I would definitely NOT recommend.
Cannot understand a word he says but class is so easy. Tests are wordy but easy if you read the book. One 6 page paper due at end of semester. Need to read the book because you will not get anything out of his lectures. Attendance counts towards final grade. Final is not cumulative
I absolutely loved this class. Hartmark knows his stuff and i felt like i knew it when i finished the class. tests are hard as crap, but read the questions carefully, and the correct answer pops out...dont know if i would recommend him cuz he is quirky, but i loved him.
I would not recommend him. He seems like a nice guy but his lectures had nothing to do with the tests. There was a lot of reading and the tests were all double negative and confusing. Read the book and show up to class.
Nice guy that knows his stuff. Alittle boring if you take minimester but I got an A in the class by just paying attention and doing the work. There was 2 tests and 1 10-12 pg. paper. Go to class and write notes. Tests are alittle confusing but just read them carefully.
By far the WORST professor I have ever had at Towson! He's a nice guy and TRIES to make things easy, but he really is just in outer space. His lectures have nothing to do with what's in the book, and his tests are confusing. Attenance and the 6 page paper were the only things that helped my class. I really felt like i was taking an online class.
Teacher was awesome, very weird at times. MUST read proior to class to follow along with lectures. Test are not hard if you read/attend class, wording is tricky (but if you read and attend then you know the right answer) most test Q's come from the application sections of the book. TAKE HIM, he doesn't hand out grades, but grade easy & VERY HELPFUL
A lot of people said his lectures aren't valuable, but they are. I wrote everything down that he said and it was all on the exam. The first test didn't go well, but after that I got A's. It isn't just memorization of vocab. Very interesting. Plus, he adds filler to your grade (like easy one page papers). Don't complain, it's easy.
This is the worst professor I've had in all four years of college, and I'm a soc major. He lectures the whole time, the lectures barely make sense and he is incapable of answering questions or listening to anything other than his own I wondered how Towson has even allowed him to "teach" this long. Do not take!!!
Dr. Hartmark is nice, but he's not all that great of a professor. If you take 101 you WILL need that textbook because you won't understand what he's talking about in class. He goes on and on and then he sometimes goes on tangents. And when he asks a question, you never know when you're actually supposed to answer cuz he answers it himself sometimes
Only advice I have for Hartmark is to never take his TSEM class. 2 page paper every week along with a 10 page paper and a discussion of a partners paper that is 5 pages. Hard grader and can find any flaw in a paper and kill your grade.
I had him for Sociology 311(individual&society). He's nice and the class was easy.I recommend this class if you don't mind a lot of writing. Required to write papers(either 2 pages of informal writing, or 4 pages of formal)once a week, then a 10 page final paper. The papers were mainly based on the readings. No tests for this class.I got an A.
He has a passion for the subject, but his teaching style is confusing. He's never up-front about what he wants to say. Best advice is to read the book before class or you won't know what's going on. When you study, you can't just go off vocab definitions, you need to know the examples in the book & ones discussed in class.
His lectures can get confusing and sometimes do not make sense. Cannot rely on vocab only. Know the examples in the book as well. Had to do a lot of discussion posts that were like 1-2 pages. I do not recommend him. He is a nice guy but the class just gets confusing with him as a teacher. If you do the work though, you will be okay.
Seems like a nice guy, but a very poor professor. In class, he goes on in tangents and you really can never tell what he's talking about... ever. He's just an odd man who teaches a very interesting course. Reading the textbook is the only way you will do well on tests, theres only 3 (the third one is the final). His lectures are EXTREMELY unclear
Hartmark seems to be a very intelligent man but he was very hard to follow in class. This was the opinion of every classmate I talked to. He tries to engage with students in class discussion but no one ever knows what to answer...
He is very difficult to follow in lecture, but the tests are not too bad. If you read the book and listen to him most of the time, you'll to fine. There are 10 discussion day journals that are easy points and a six page paper about any topic of your choosing.
The class was very heavily based on the text, but lectures pretty much cover all the information needed for tests. I didn't read the book at all and I got As on each test. Jumps around in lectures but not too hard to follow. 10 discussion day posts worth about 20% of the final grade, 2 easy tests, an easy final, and a 5/6 page research paper.
Professor Hartmark is the most confusing lecturer I have ever seen. His discussions are hard to follow. He passive-agressively calls you out for not paying attention in class. His tests all have double-negatives, but the content isn't hard to grasp and it's straight from the book. Easy discussion posts and easy essay, but with little direction.
I would say this is a very easy course as long as you attend the lectures. I have not read the textbook however I received an A on the first exam. Taking notes during his notes is essential and he takes attendance. He has discussion questions every Friday which are about a page long but aren't hard and are graded for completion. He is very nice
Do not take him! He is so confusing and you can never follow what he says. You are basically teaching yourself. Read the textbook and you will be able to get by. His tests are worded very confusingly.
Yea very hard to understand... I did not pay attention at all.. usually slpet in class buttttt if you read the book and go over the study guide questions you should be okay.
Professor Hartmark is very nice, but trying to reach him for questions is actually difficult. I emailed him twice with questions about my final paper and he never responded to them. The class is VERY easy, pretty much common sense actually. He's a very upbeat person, and he has a good sense of humor.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT!, take this Professor. Trying to understand him is like trying to read Cantonese when you don't know the language at all. I read through each chapter during his lectures (because he jumped all over the place) and his tests still didn't make any sense! Their filled with double negatives. Also, he has an annoying voice.
This class was a summer class, so condensed material in 5 weeks. A LOT of reading that is partially interesting but also dry and wordy. Exams were very challenging, bc it didn't necessarily reflect our discussions, but the reading. 1 paper, 5 journals, and 2 exams. I'd recommend taking it in 5 weeks just because it was great to get it done.
I went to every class and his lectures consisted of him lecturing and was very confusing and so were his tests. A lot of double negatives that made no sense. I would never take him again.
Great professor who's very funny and loves to use his specific life examples, which makes the topics easier. He does lack clarification in some sections that we cover, but everything you need to know is in the textbook. If you show up to class, and you read the textbook, you'll undoubtedly receive an A. Attendance is mandatory.
OMG! let me start with I got a B--BUT, his text are EXTREMELY hard and he is so random!. He doesn't require much and his class in interesting but if you want complete and utter clarity-do not take him. If you can deal with randomness and corny jokes; he's the professor for you. No busy work, no quizzes, and he gives options for assignment dates.
Makes the subject more difficult than it needs to be. Unclear and long rambling lectures where he contradicts himself many times. The textbook is heavy and dry reading and doesn't always correspond with his lectures. One paper with little guidelines that is worth 13 your final grade. Tests are worded very confusing.
Made the class so much harder than it needed to be, would not take this professor again. Rambled on in his lectures and really didn't make any sense. Pay attention to the main topics he writes on the board, and study them because they are usually on the test. You may not be able to read his handwriting though. Would not recommend.
This class is okay. Sometimes he gets a little off track. The test are kinda difficult. They are all multiple choice, but the questions are confusing. You have a "journal" entry to blackboard due every Friday. Four test, the final is not cumulative. There is also a five page paper but it's not too bad. He wouldn't be my first choice.
This was one of the most confusing classes I have ever taken. I am a student athlete and I took this class during season and it was very complicated. You have to study A LOT.
I would not suggest taking Dr. Hartmark. He gets very off topic very easily, when he is on topic he rambles.....a lot. On one of the tests every question but two where "all of these answers are correct EXCEPT" or something along those lines. The blackboard discussion posts are easy but that makes up for the hard tests. You could find a better one.
Dr. Hartmark is soooooo complicated. He rambles off topic so much and half the time you have no idea what he's talking about. I failed his 3 tests but I did really well on my final exam essay and always kept up with the black board discussion posts. He's do-able if you have no other option.
This class really wasn't as hard as everyone on here says it is. He does tend to ramble but if you take notes and then go back into the textbook and read those key topics you'll be fine on the tests. Homework is pretty easy and you get extra credit for submitting all of it. Really not that hard of a class, just boring
Honestly, Hartmark is one of the better SOCI teachers at Towson. All you have to do is come to class and write down what he says. If you do the readings and listen to him in class (like you should), you'll do fine. He is VERY understanding if you miss a class or two... or three. Papers are long but not a big deal.
His lectures are VERY difficult to follow
He's very unclear in his lectures and you'll have to read and study a LOT to pass his tests. Wouldn't recommend taking his class unless you absolutely have to.
Would not take again. I am a senior and he is the most difficult, confusing professor I've had. He is a really tough grader too. I went to every class, took notes, read, and still was left confused. It's irritating when I hear my friends took their SOCI 101 class, never went, and still got an A because they didn't have Hartmark
His class is not difficult at all. Just pay attention in lecture and read the chapters the week of the exam. Don't forget to do the homework as well. I got a perfect score on one of my exams from reading my notes and the chapters.
Prof. Hartmark likes to ramble during class, doesn't like to present material effectively and tests on which of the four possible answers is not the right selection. What is presented in class does not totally match with the textbook, and he goes off topic easily and scribbles on the board, making it hard to figure out what is needed to know.
Doesn't put your grades on blackboard so you'll have no idea how you're doing in the class until it's too late. Very unclear and hard to understand with lectures. Tests are very difficult, you won't be able to just listen to lectures if you want to pass them. Get ready to study hardcore, because you'll be teaching yourself everything.
This professor was so boring. His tests were so hard also. Most of the questions were double negatives so it made them really confusing. He rambled during class which made it impossible to pay attention. The book he chose was also very boring. NOT FUN.
So lets just say this.... I usually get straight A's in my classes, especially 101's but in all honesty, I did not understand a THING he was talking about all semester. He rambles and rambles and literally just puts you to sleep. He is a very nice guy, but this is not a class I would recommend to take. Find a different Professor.
Okay, Hartmark is a great professor if you pay attention to his lectures which can be hard. But, his lectures DO NOT matter on the tests because the book covers it. The book is extremely essential for the tests because the chapter tests can be difficult. But, if you're the type of person who gets bored really easily, then I wouldn't take this class
This class was honestly awful, I am a straight A student and I think I am ending with no higher than a B (not that I would know cause he doesn't let you know what you have) his questions are run-on sentences that are double negatives. Honestly, pick ANY other teacher than him
Professor Hartmark is a great guy. Unfortunately, his ability to teach isn't so great. During his class he rambles on completely off topic and put you to sleep. His test are hard and and basically about what is discussed in the book in each chapter. He also doesn't post grades to blackboard so you have no idea of how your doing in the class. Avoid!
Professor Hartmark is great! I learned a lot and he was very understanding. Take notes during lectures, read the text, and ASK QUESTIONS! He loves that so do it and he'll like you. Do the Blackboard posts every week (very easy-just a page and a half) and do the extra credit ones. He'll help you study for each exam and helps a LOT on the final paper
If you like writing over 60 pages over the course of the semester then this class is for you but most of the TSEMs do not make you write as much as he does. His lectures are not very clear. They're long and boring but he's passionate about the topic. I would not take his class again. He's quirky and a allows you to turn in late assignments.
Professor Hartmark is a great guy but his teaching skills are not the best. He often jumps between topics and his lectures can often seem scattered and hard to follow. However, if you take notes and ask him questions, you will be fine. Relied heavily on the textbook for his class because essentially, I taught myself. However, not a very hard class.
he is nice but not a good professor. His teaching style is nonexistent. He talks about what the learning outcomes for the course are for about 30 out of the 50 minutes yet doesn't teach at all. The other 20 mins are him rambling on nothing. The book barely helps with tests because he barely uses terms from the book. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE CAN
i lost professor hartmark in his lectures he gives blackboard new york times articles every other week and attendance is graded you HAVE to read your textbook or you will not pass just by his lecture basically taught myself the course has three tests and a final all multiple choice but wordy and can get confusing also has research paper
He has a wonderful personality, but his teaching style is very hard to follow. His thought pattern is very scattered. However, the examples he uses in class showed up on the tests. You must also read the textbook in order to do well on the tests. A lot of class time was spent talking about our postings, which became repetitive & wasted time.
He's a really nice guy and very lenient but a terrible teacher. His lectures are very hard to follow, half the time i don't know what he's talking about. Tests are hard because you don't really know what to study. Avoid if you can
He really isn't as bad as everyone on here says. I took him at Towson fall 16 for soci 311. He does ramble and make it hard to follow but but the work was minimal. We had no text just a reading summary done every week and one 12 page paper due at the end of the semester.
Their are 3 exams and then your final exam. All four of them weren't about the study questions he gave us. You just need to know everything about each chapter you read or you won't do good. But he is always their to help! I 100% recommend you to at least see him once a week and go over the chapters you read, it will help u a lot on the exams!
He is always there to help you. He is very accommodating to students. He is a genuinely nice person and cares about students education.
Great professor and very caring guy. I am a science major and plan to go to medical school and Dr. Hartmark has been so supportive and encouraging! His lectures are engaging and I learned a lot from his course. Take him if you have the chance!
there are 3 exams, a course paper, 5 bb post and a student exchange paper. the exams are really hard bc its based on exactly what you read in the book. he helps you by having review sessions on what will be on the test. you get a month to do the course paper. its easy to get distracted, he has a monotone voice but it cracks sometimes.
3 exams that are really hard but you can improve your grade by doing well on the course paper and doing the blackboard posts. he has review sessions that help too.
As a freshman 1st semester, I was put into this class and figured I would just take him because I did not know any better. However, I wish I had dropped him when I had the chance and found a different professor because his lectures do not make any sense and his tests are extremely difficult, which are worth a large portion of the grade.
Professor Hartmark is a caring guy. However, hes lectures about nothing and makes zero sense. The material is straight forward but his lectures will just leave you confused. The exams have nothing to do with what he mentions during the lectures and are vague enough to create issues even if you read the book seconds before the exam.
Professor Hartmark is a great guy, but his lectures were awful. I didn't understand anything he said, in fact it made me more confused on the subject. The tests were one of the hardest things I've ever done. 5-6 page paper, plus a lot of Blackboard posts.
BE AWARE!! He looks at the camera in the back of the room and will take points off your grade if you're doing other work!!! WORSE LECTURES EVER!! The only way you can not fail is by reading the ENTIRE book.
Nice guy but his lectures do not help to understand the material. The textbook is put to good use because all of his tests are based out of the book. He does look at the camera in the back and takes points off so Beware!!! Overall an average class but a lot of self-taught stuff.
He can be a little difficult to understand, as he jumps around with his lectures. But a caring and understanding professor who is passionate about his class.
his lectures make no sense at all and powerpoint are also very vague
Made this class so much harder than it needed to be. Attendance is part of your grade and sitting in lecture does little/nothing to prepare you for his tests. Avoid if you're looking for an easy A.
His class does not require much effort. Just read the book religiously and read the slides because he bases his exams off of it, raise your hand and comment a couple times to show you're not asleep, and come to class (extra credit). As for the camera in the back, I haven't had any issues and I didn't pay attention much. He gives a lot of EC too
His lectures are easy to understand, and he teaches with enthusiasm. The exams were pretty hard in the beginning, but most of the students brought it up. Take notes on his lectures, and read textbook. Just one paper, and he guides you through it
professor hartmark was very enthusiastic with his lectures but they made absolutely no sense. you NEED to read the textbook or else you will not pass. I do not recommend this teacher.
You will need to read the textbook in order to pass this class. All of the exams are based off the textbook. He is a really nice and enthusiastic professor but it was very hard for me to pay attention in his class. He gives assignments that will help boost your grade. He was kind of a hard grader on the term essay.
Easy 101 course as long as you pay attention in class and maybe read the textbook every once in a while. Weekly short papers (2pgs), lots of writing on topics of your choice. Exams are hard to study for and pretty confusing, very specific. Professor says "hot dog" as an expression at least 5x a class (I tallied all semester). Funny guy.
i LOVE this professor. So friendly and nice-very enthusiastic. He made class more interesting and always kept class smiling or laughing. definitely would take again.
He is very scatterbrained and goes off topic a lil bit but the exams werent too hard- just long. You have 4 blackboard journal entries (3 page each), 3 exams and a 10 page term paper due close to the end of the semester. Hes a very caring and kind professor but his lectures are very confusing. His lectures also drag on. its hard to stay focused
Prof Hartmark is a super understanding, nice, and energetic guy. He always brings passionate energy to his lectures but somehow I still struggled to pay attention. I also don't find the subject boring, but he did lots of talking that was difficult for me to keep track of. 10/10 recommend taking notes during his lectures. Also not a tough grader.
He's not a bad professor at all but he would not be my first choice. Hartmark is passionate and his exams are based on his lecture powerpoints and the textbook(Don't try to skim it his exams are specific). You'll have a weekly 1 1/2-2 page current event that goes along with the topics he e-mails. He's also a tough grader on the paper.
Even though I checked textbook needed only for terms, only once did I read the chapter assigned but if you go to class and pay attention (just write notes) and you will remember what the concept was about for the exams. Go to class easy 40 credits and if you don't read the book. Do the newspaper analysis's easy 3-6 points. Great Professor!
Had hartmark for urban soci and finished the semester with a B!! Hes not a harsh grader, and hes quite helpful if you take the time to talk to/email him
Hartmark is a bit of a strange guy, but he prepares you for the tests very well. He gives study guides that are almost identical if you do them and read you will get an A. He is a fair grader and an interesting guy
He is a very odd teacher and his lectures are very boring. The exams are pretty hard if you don't study and go over your notes. You get points off if you don't show up in class, so if you want some easy points, go to class.
He is such a nice guy and really cares about his students/job. The tests are very specific, but as long as you read the textbook you should be able to pass! None of the tests are cumulative :) You have weekly 1 page writing assignments, which are super easy and if you get points off he gives a detailed explanation of how you lost points.
Really nice person and I love how his personality comes out in his lectures but he is really slow at getting through concepts. You need to show up because he explains concepts that will be on tests in further detail, but it is hard to pay attention at the rate he goes. He is a super lenient grader on papers if you put in even the smallest effort.
Professor Hartmark was really caring and his fun personality and knowledge of the subject definitely showed through his lectures. However, the lectures were pretty boring and hard to pay attention to. Lots of textbook reading and the test comes straight from the textbook definitions and examples so make sure you take good notes.
If you can avoid him do it! BUT he is a very easy grader. All the exams come straight from the PowerPoints so I never studied. If I completed the page requirements I got an A. But there were 4 exams, 4 papers, and one course paper that is 8-10 pages long. You do the work you pass but you will fall asleep in class. He over explains everything!
Very responsive and always ready to help. You can tell that he enjoys teaching and helping students. You can get by not reading if you pay attention during class and take notes. Very well structured with a lot of writing.
If you have the option, I'd recommend picking another professor for this course. I've never spaced out more during a class than in this one. He puts up one slide and rambles on the entire class. Most times what he's saying doesn't even make sense. Don't even get me started on how difficult he makes all of his exams.
The questions on his tests are often written poorly with double negatives. This was meant to test your recall. However, I spent most of the time rereading questions, just trying to understand what the heck he was saying.I KNEW that textbook back to front, I studied. I cant imagine how hard the class would be if English was your 2nd language.
Professor Hartmark is a great professor! Sometimes you cant understand him but if you email him, he will give clearer instructions than the instructions he gave in class. Grades pretty easy, you just have to understand his grading criteria. Wants you to succeed and gives you all the tools you need to do so! Tests can be difficult.
There is so much work for this class. Prof Hartmark is a very great man, but is a confusing professor sometimes. The exams are so wordy and so HARD! There are so many little papers. A page and a half a week due every friday at 7:59? And then a 6 page paper at the end. He's a decent grader, but a lot of work.
The way he explains things make no sense at all and a page and a half due every Friday and a 6 page paper due at the end. Questions on tests make no sense so you'll spend more time trying to figure out what he's asking. Attendance is mandatory. Very nice guy but a lot of work for a 101 class
Yes attendance is mandatory, but you dont even have to pay Attention in class. As long as you read the textbook chapters and make Quizlets for the chapter vocab youll be fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IT HAS THE HARDEST TEST IVE EVER HAD. You will reread questions until the time runs out. His lectures are confusing, but attendance is mandatory. The one and a half page papers every fridays are easy. Its mainly just the exams. READ THE BOOK because you can’t answer using common sense.
Tests were pretty straight forward/self explanatory, I never had to study. Frustrating that attendance is mandatory when you genuinely don't need to pay attention in class. Nice guy though, and it's a pretty easy class overall.
He is very understanding and wont trip if you miss class or anything but his Lectures are so weird and make absolutely no sense. So get ready to just read and teach yourself. He Is very animated also when speaking. His test are the hardest things. Idk how to study for them. Very particular on how he wants his work and the turn in time is weird.
This class is difficult, the content is confusing and the lectures are long-winded. I feel like he genuinely enjoys teaching but this class just doesn't work well! He won't even allow electronics out either! No phones, headphones, or laptops. He will confiscate them. Really nice guy, but a strict professor.
Hes a living NPC, hes hard to understand half the time and be prepared to teach yourself
attendance is mandatory but you dont even learn anything in class. he will talk for 20 minutes about one assignment, and studying for the exams can be a bit confusing. you really are teaching yourself, but hes a sweet professor and funny, but idk the structure of the class is eh.
He's passionate and enjoys what he teachers, i just don't like his teaching style. He doesnt use power points and doesnt give study guides (i wouldn't mind this if he would use power points). he does give you a sheet to use on the exams but they're not really helpful. What's in the textbook is different from whats in his lectures. Wouldnt recommend
Prof. Hartmark is not a bad professor, but I feel like he just doesn't know how to deliver to us students. You will have to teach yourself tbh I didn't understand his teaching at all. Attendance was mandatory, but you won't understand or learn anything, his tests are so confusing and I passed his class by God's grace tbh. Good luck!!
Prof. Hartmark is a nice dude, but he is SO confusing to try and follow his lectures. There are not set study guides, we refer to the syllabus every day (we are in the 3rd week??), and he is PAPER HEAVY. Every week you have a 1.5 page "discussion" due. He is caring and I think he is passionate about what he teaches, but he just is hard to follow.
Lectures are intense and verbose--it is difficult to understand what he is saying. Also, a lot of the information I learned from him turned out to conflict with other coursework, so I don't know what that is about. Very reading and paper-heavy, but in a lot of the paper opportunities you can choose to write about anything related to the section.
While he requires attendance, it feels as though you learn nothing in the class because he just babbles on throughout the whole class time. He does not put the assignments in blackboard and only has them in the syllabus. If you don't check your syllabus constantly, you will miss assignments and YOU WILL FAIL. don't take him if you can
If you have to take SOCI 101 and this professor is on your schedule, you would be doing yourself a big disservice to keep him on your schedule. He is passionate about sociology but you will not leave his lectures with clarity on the lesson.
This professor will grant special opportunities to some students for them to raise their grade but will tell other students no. Take a different professor if you can!
Pros : -Very sweet and understanding, continuously giving students a chance to get a good grade. - will either remove or lessen late penalties to help you Cons: -Lectures don't make sense -Study guides never match the exam and very unhelpful -Babbles about a whole bunch of nothing -16+ pages for the whole semester 6 are weekly save your time!
His teaching style is too complex and jargony. It is very hard to understand what he's trying to get across; it also feels as if he is introducing topics that are way too niche or deep into his field of study that he thinks the class will understand, but it just comes off as confusing. The instructions in his syllabus are jargony.
Easy class the weekly assignments are sooo easy to get 100% on, hes not a hard grader AT ALL! I bs on all my assignments and I never actually read the book and he always gives me 5/5. Lectures are confusing in the sense that hes just rambling. Super nice never cares when I don't go to class and veryyy understanding. studying tho is weird.
very good teacher, gives chances to get grade up. would recommend.
DO NOT TAKE NO MATTER WHAT! he was so so hard to understand and I could never follow what he was saying. For someone reason if you were on your computer or phone or anything you would have to submit notes for attendance. if you take him get ready to teach yourself everything because i have learned nothing from him at all.
If you can don't take him! His class is very difficult. He talks in circles and the lectures do not make any sense. The exams are very difficult because he doesn't go over the topics in class. The exams cover very small things within the textbook. He gives you a “review guide” that does not help at all. Overall I would never take his class again.
Worst class I have ever taken. The worload is insane and the exams are so difficult and specific to the book. I have never studied so much for any other class!
Prof Hartmark is honestly a good lecturer and Prof. He lectures heavy but he is some what animated so the lectures are actually interesting to listen to. He also reinforces concepts a lot through the assignments and his lectures. He does send lengthy emails and his syllabus is packed with info but honestly the class is great and he explains things.
