Entertaining, but way too hard of a grader
Very funny, entertaining, different. Start class w/ prayer. Show up to class, take notes, everything on exam is from notes. Study notes, read, and you'll do fine. Exams: Multiple choice, matching, maybe T/F, one sentence or less short answer, one essay
VERY UNCLEAR ON WHAT HE WANTS ON PAPERS, THEN GRADES RIDICULOUSLY HARD. IS WILLING TO HELP YOU GET A GOOD GRADE, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK HIM TO.
Heaney is absurd when it comes to grading. He is a professor that grades low...as if it was a standard of st. thomas TO grade low. Do not take him.
Yeah isnt an easy grader but very good teacher with entertaining lessons....tests are straight from notes so that isnt tough but he does grade hard on the two papers....you could do worse
The tests are okay if you study alot, he is a hard grader on the papers but there are only two per semister! I would recomend him but dont slack off
LECTURES: Purely from reading; doesn't clarify material more than book presents it; funny stories to help with drier material. PAPERS & TESTS: Regurgitation of lecture material; absurdly difficult grader. OTHER: He takes attendance daily; he's always late; prayer before class; syllabus is unclear
Uggggghhhhh
Could honestly be one of the worst professors I have ever had, he does not prepare you for the tests, his grading of papers is absurd, and was never there for help when I asked, if you take him look for a long semester ahead
By FAR the hardest grading teacher I have had at UST. Nice guy, but SO boring. He talks the whole period and is very difficult to pay attention to. Lowest grade I have received at St Thomas is from Heaney. I would definetly never take a class from him again.
Class okay, paper topics good, tests completely absurd and absolute memorization word for word of terms -- his definitions using words that are not words. Any wrong word and the question is wrong. Absolute torture! At least there were papers to bring up my grade until the final, which was 8 pages of memorization of terms.
Dr. Heaney was a great prof. He had a great sense of humor and was very interested in making sure we understood the material. Graded tough, but fair. Stay involved in the class and he will guide you to a good grade.
Great teacher, tries to make class fun. Some people had probs with the papers, but you are allowed to hand in early and make multiple revisions. Super easy if you show up, do readings, study notes.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO is just about all I can say. yup thats it.
Currently taking him and want to kill myself. Currently have a C/D and have studied my ASS OFF!
Nice guy, but very tough grader. You may think you know the material, but the test score will depress you. Take a different professor for this class.
Hardest prof I've had. Incredibly hard grader. Avoid at all costs. I studied 10+ hours a week for his class, usually about 2/week for others (I'd get A's and B's) and I got a D+ in his class. Nice guy, but hard grader for a 100 level class that's required. I can't reiterate enough---DONT TAKE HIS CLASS...EVER
I dont know what people are talking about, he is easy. he goes over everything from the day before to beat it into your brain and explain everything in laypeson terms. he's funny, a little nerdy, but really nice. also helps oyu out hard core on your essays. I'm a 2.2 student and I got a B- in his class for litterally "taking it easy"
By far the hardest upper-level philsophy prof. Expects a lot from students. A little too concerned with class participation points, and NOT a fair grader on papers/tests (takes half the points off for small errors). Knows the material decently, but expect to work HARD on papers and talk at every single class. Not a class for everyone.
He's really intelligent, but his tests are really hard. Just make sure you don't take his Tuesday/Thursday class... it's so long it makes you want to rip out your hair one strand at time. Let me stress the hard tests again...
DONT TAKE HIM =( AT LEAST NOT FOR 115. HE IS BORING, THE HARDEST GRADER EVER, and doesn't explain things well. Nice guy, likes philosophy, but for those who don't, don't take him.
HORRIBLE!, Long, ridiculously boring lectures, Hard long exams with a Time Limit (one hour), poor grader (forget to put a title on paper..thats gonna cost ya about 10pts) I am 3.4 student and got a D+ in the class. The reading is tricky and not everyone understands it, his lectures werent to insightful, to make up for the complicated reading.
Previous raters do not lie; he is tough. Tests are difficult, lectures can be boring, and it's a killer to miss a single class. I'm a 3.8 student, and this is my only B to date (after 2 full years at UST). In Dr. Heaney's defense, he is a very nice fellow, quite funny at times, and is quite willing to work with you to help.
He is a really tough professor. He tells you right off the bat that he is one of the hardest graders in the philosophy dept...and that's no lie. He is a nice guy for the most part but a VERY HARD GRADER!!!
Has an easy-to-learn teaching style. Dont need to read the book because he goes through it in class. Watch a few movies, quizes are straight forward. 2 papers-easy but if your grammar isnt perfect you have to re-do it! Very nice guy and funny.
Horrible Professor.
Must attend class in order to understand. Make sure you submit rough drafts of your papers, he's very critical but also very helpful.
He's a good guy and his tests aren't hard unless you are unintelligent, but he grades papers based on grammar and format, not that I disagree with that per se, but he'll dock points for the most obscure punctuation mistakes imaginable and it's really annoying. Don't bother buying the books right away because he goes over everything and you don't need them. He's knowledgable and prepared.
I have to agree with the other comments. Don't take his T/TH class because you'll die of boredom. His tests and grading of papers are very tough. I got a B in the class and the only way I got it was by literally memorizing my notes and repeating it all verbatim on his essay exams. Avoid this class if you are a slacker at all costs!!!
Loved Heaney. If you come to class and take notes you will do great on the quizzes. Quizzes are 32 points and there are about 6 of them and then a final. You also write 6 one page double spaced papers.... doesn't sound to hard! Also you have discussion points, blackboard and in class and the more you achieve above the required are extra credit. TAK
EXTREMELY HARD do not take him. Really tough grader.
He is a really nice guy. He attempts to make class interesting even though he know were all there because we have to be. I had his class as a lecture class and it was great! You gotta love those clicker quizes!
Pretty good prof and can be interesting. I took him in a lecture and had daily clicker quizzes. He knows we are required to be there and tries to make it interesting. His quizzes are pretty easy if you paid attention in class. And there are 5 one page papers, one at the end of each section.
very interesting guy. he's kind hearted and has a lot of passion for philosophy. theres daily reading assignments as well as small clicker quizes everyday, but as long as you do the reading assignments and pay attention in class, its a relatively easy class. he also believes that students should have random days off of class, so he cancels randomly
love him!
great professor; funny and humble and hard--but fair
He is a good guy, a little odd. He actually explains what each philosopher meant so that you can understand it. Tests were somewhat difficult. About 5 one page papers due, but you get to watch some fun movies (groundhog day and indecent proposal) to do your papers on. Overall, a good class that is easy to understand and not too difficult.
Professor Heaney is a great professor. He is a little awkward at times (lots of awkward silences), but he doesnt call people out. There are daily quizzes (ranging from 2 to 6 points), and no tests (just larger quizzes). There are several short one-page essays which he can be pretty strict on grading. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
He is OK. Must attend, as clicker quizzes 0-6 pts everyday. Gives pretty good notes. Tests are not impossible, but def hard. He does offer E/C opps though. 5 one page papers, although he grades more on grammar than anything-very hard grader on these. He's very smart on the subj, but he struggles with interacting with students.
Funny, helpful, great sense of humor and loves philosophy. Will go the last mile to help you to understand the material.
This class sucks. It's a huge lecture class with 3 quizzes EVERY DAY. 5 papers, 5 tests on each philosopher, and mandatory blackboard posts that he fails to mention to you and gives you a 0. he is not very nice and is extremely weird. he does give out extra credit opportunities though. i would NOT advise you to take him or his class.
The class is organized and efficient, but 3 mini clicker quizzes almost every day. Tests on each philosopher reflect the material well, but you never know what you're going to get on the one page papers. TOUGH grader. I felt completely confident about some of my papers and ended up getting C's. He doesn't explain why he takes so many points off.
Clicker quizzes EVERYDAY, make sure you bring your clicker. Quizzes are on notes from last class and reading. One pagers are extremely difficult. 5 mini tests on each Philosopher are easy. He's a great teacher and keeps the class engaged. Take his class if you want to be challenged and learn.
Very tough professor. A ton of little papers and assignments and such. He really makes you work, the upside of which is you feel like you really learn a lot. However, I don't think I've been more stressed out in my life ever
Nice guy, but not lenient in any respect. I worked hard on papers and often did not receive my target grade with little to no explanation as to why (his notes are scrawled, illegible, and minimal). Has a natural passion for philosophy and presents every topic of a given school of thought instead of summarizing the main points.
In my opinion, this professor exercises an unfair grading policy. His comments on papers that I received less than optimal grades on were largely illegible and always minimal. When I visited his office to discuss this pattern, his explanations were similarly curt and unhelpful. A genuinely friendly guy overall, however. Would not recommend.
Heaney is a shift-work professor. Leaves early even on days that we had agreed to meet up on, forgetful in posting assignments as well (although their due dates remained the same regardless). This professor expresses an overall disregard for wellbeing of students and their grades - would NOT RECOMMEND.
Dr. Heaney expects a lot from his students but he gives a lot, too. Always willing to help outside of class. His lectures are crystal clear and very funny, and if you are paying attention and coming to class you will do very well.
Dr. Heaney was a really good professor if you're willing to put the work into the class. This is NOT a show-up and pass class. Tests are clear-cut and based off of reading guides. Research paper from midterm to final is not bad if you get a good start on it. Responds to emails INCREDIBLY quickly and is available to answer question. Would recommend
A lot of reading. Lots of writing. Quizes are very clear and easy
Professor Heaney is not a bad guy, but his tests are very difficult. It is very difficult to achieve an A in this class, because he does clicker quizzes everyday in class (usually about 4-6 points from clicker quizzes each class period). It is difficult to do well on the clicker quizzes, and missing points on them daily adds up.
He is funny, charming and available to give help when needed. Knows his stuff and wants us to get it.
Mr. Heaney is always willing to help his students to understand the material and he gets the points across with humor and makes it interesting. Would definitely take him again.
Really did not like him. Tests were hard. clicker quizzes daily and hard to do well on them leaving you with needed to get a lot of extra credit. Does online forums to get extra points which is nice, would've failed without it. 5 paper that are very difficult but only one page. Dont take him if you dont have to. Nice guy though. Dont come to class.
Taught me how to read and how to write. Really high standards but I learned a lot.
Lots of help with writing papers and always clear about what is on the tests. Loves to engage in conversation if you are prepared.
the hardest professor I've taken at UST. Felt like I was taking a grad school course in Philosophy. do not recommend at all if you care about your gpa.
Worst professor I have ever taken in my whole life! Class was all powerpoint lecture and if you asked him to send you the slides if you missed something he would tell you to find a classmate to get the notes (even if you knew no one because there is no group work). Only advice he gives for studying is "study in groups". Wants his students to fail
He is funny and smart and has high expectations but wants us to learn the material.
He is very unclear and teaches subject in general it makes sense but, when it comes to the test, test you on the exact verbiage from the book. This will be my first D in college and nobody I have talked to has above a C- he is a horrible professor.
He tells every single thing that is going to be on the tests and offers review sessions. If you do the work you will be fine. If you don't want to do the work, whine all you want but don't blame this guy for your own laziness.
I would not recommend taking this professor. PHIL 115 is supposed to be challenging despite which professor you have. There are 2-4 point daily quizzes that are given using a clicker program. If you aren't able to make it to class on a regular basis this will take a toll on your grade. Best way to study is to take detailed lecture notes!
Heaney is funny and makes lectures interesting with good examples. He is almost always available to help and will go the extra mile for you if you are making an effort.
Gives good lectures to help understand content, and reviews the previous days lecture each day helping you to understand the content. Lots of reading. There are also multiple clicker quizzes every day. Has a bunch of one page papers as well
Very clear in his expectations and works hard to make the material relevant to our lives. Always willing to help--read drafts of papers, go over materials for test. A good guy.
Very clear and helpful.
Mr. Heaney is probably the worst professor I've ever had. He's nice, but he grades like he expects you to be a master philosopher. I'm a COJO major and I've NEVER gotten worse grades on papers. Each paper has 2 pages of guidelines you have to follow - including points off for using contractions. I will never take a class from him again.
You have short clicker quizzes every class which aren't too difficult because you have your notes in front of you. People seem to not like Heaney for some reason but he is seriously not that bad. I am not a straight A student by any means but I did just fine in his class. He's kind and caring. His handwriting is AWFUL but he owns up to it.
Difficult, but not impossible. Daily clicker quizzes are impossible, but he supplements this difficulty with 30 points of extra credit via online discussions. Tests are easy if reviewed, and essays are challenging. If you talk to him, he will proof-read your essay for you, but I would not over-use this.
NOTE: most ppl who take Heaney are in Intro (115) or Ethics (214) and haven't experienced a college humanities course yet. You must work to get good grades. Watered down business courses won't help you win. If you want to win in your career, work hard and take your req. courses seriously. Heaney is dope, and only cares if you care. ((Hd)*(Yc>Hc))
Mostly dry lectures, but I really enjoyed group discussions. I personally gave up on the clicker quizzes we have every class as they were nearly impossible to answer correctly. However, you can earn up to 50-60+ points of extra credit if you push yourself to do so. Because of extra credit I got an A in the class where normally I would not have!
Heaney is one of those teachers you had at your public school that obviously didnt want to be there. Still, you will retain more from them. Readings are dull and outdated and he makes little effort to explain them. If you have any interest in philosophy, this man will brutally murder it like the war-crime that is his wardrobe.
What you see is what you get with this professor. He is a very tough grader assigning daily clicker quizzes. His grading is almost unfairly difficult. However, his expectations are very clear. Very hard to get an A.
I thought Heaney was great. He is funny and yes, he's demanding but that's only because he really cares whether we learn. I would take him again in a heartbeat. People don't like him if they don't want to do the work but if you want to work he will go the last mile for you.
I really struggled with his class as it was all asynchronous and the Canvas site had no modules (everything was in files). It was hard teaching myself all of the course material he covered and I think the workload should have been lightened up since it was all online and asynchronous. Probably would've not dreaded this class if it was in person.
Was a required class, didn't want to take it but had no choice. If you care about your GPA, do not take this class. His notes are rather helpful but do not rely on them. The one pagers are extremely difficult, it's almost guaranteed you will never get a perfect score. If you want to pass with a decent grade, you must do the extra credit.
Though the transition to online was tough for most, Heaney didn't stick to the scheduled time we were supposed to have class each week resulting in less than five zoom class for the semester. This made it very difficult to understand the class. Never held any lectures, zooms were only to answer questions. Tests and papers every week. Do not take.
Worst professor I've had at St. Thomas. Seems like a nice guy at first but is a dbag to his students. Online asynchronous and had possibly the worst canvas page I've seen. Expects his students to have a PHD in Philosophy. Grades harder on grammar than any english prof. If possible, take any other professor.
His class is very disorganized and the daily pop-quizzes were dreadful. The questions he would ask were very specific. You would have to read the readings multiple times just to catch every detail just for these pathetic quizzes. The material was hilariously outdated, all were from the 70s/80s, he was never there for office hours, do not take him.
If you want to learn some interesting things about the human person and you aren't a whiner, then Heaney's your guy. He loves philosophy and he cares whether his students learn the important concepts. A stickler for proper grammar and good writing, he helped me to do better on papers in other classes because he took the time to help with my writing
Spelled Levithan instead of Leviathan twice in a paper. Docked 30% to a C- off of an A-grade content paper. Professor Heaney knows his stuff but do not expect to achieve high grades in his class. Fear his grammar rules! And hedge your bets and take another philosophy professor. The only reason for not giving him a 1 is he does offer extra credit.
He's pretty funny and he doesn't get mad when, like, no one has done the reading. Tough grader but he gives a lot of chances to make points and do extra credit. Learned more about writing from him than any of my English profs so there's that. If you don't care and taking philosophy for a requirement then skip him.
Prepare to take mini-quizzes every class. Class average is around 3-4 out of 5 every quiz. Dr. Heaney will present to you about the SA's. He tries to make you think they are very straight forward and clear, but that is totally wrong. No one has gotten a perfect score in my class so far. He grades like a professor in an essay writing class for grads
His classes make me feel like I'm learning in the 60s. All he does in class is just talking; there's no notes or powerpoints. He is the toughest grader and doesn't give any comment on papers. Throughout the semester, you'll notice that half of the class don't even show up. That's how boring it is. There's daily quizzes; the reading doesn't help.
He acts as if his students are in college, not day care. I respect that. I learned a lot from him and when I was confused, he was always accessible to offer help. He is very clear about his expectations. He is very demanding and picky about writing. I have more confidence in my own writing after slaving for him.
If you aren't interested in philosophy, this class sucks. Every class period is a lecture, and you aren't allowed to use your laptop. There is lots of reading and you have multiple quizzes and papers a week. He does not accept late work. During class, he asks questions with very specific answers expecting the class to read his mind.
Very engaging fellow, good sense of humor, willing to give help outside class.
Dr. Heaney assigns many short papers, but doesn't give clear feedback on how you can improve. There are a lot of quizzes and outside reading as well. An interesting class taught by an uninteresting professor.
Heaney expects A LOT but he made me a better thinker, writer and person. Glad I took his class.
Please. For the love of whatever you believe in, do NOT take this professor if you don't have to. This was the biggest mistake I've ever made. So hard, so much work, and no matter what you do or how hard you study it's just not good enough. Please. Listen to me. Toughest grader ever and the tests/papers are so incredibly confusing. Just trust me.
Heaney knows his stuff, and he expects a lot from his students. Since being in his class, my other profs have noticed the improvement in my writing and critical thinking skills. I'm grateful.
PHIL234, is a love sex and marriage class. sounded interesting. nope. - Heaney is brutal. Mini quizzes are remembering the exact wordings of the horrible readings, he does try and trick you. Also, someone with such intensely right-wing views should not be teaching this class. Just look at the articles he's written on his UST faculty page. Yuck.
Professor Heaney expected a lot from me but he also expects a lot from himself. He calls us by our last names, which was weird at first but now it seems respectful, actually. Definitely old-school, doesn't use a lot of media stuff but I learned a ton in his class and I think about the discussions after class is over. High Octane Philosophy.
PHIL234* Pros: Quick response to emails, explains concepts semi-clearly (after the quizzes though), TONS of extra credit. Cons: hard quizzes, papers every week, archaic readings, HARD grader. Quizzes/ papers every week, massive final exam final paper. Tons of work, wouldn't recommend. If you want a decent grade, do ALL of the extra credit.
I liked this guy and I learned a ton in this class.
He's great with us seminarians. Great rapport, takes us seriously and wants us to learn. Respects where we are intellectually and wants to challenge us and show us how to get better. Very exacting in his standards, especially writing papers, but I learned a lot and he is accessible and kind. Also funny. Great addition to the seminary.
He always wants to help everyone learn something in his class and get a good grade for it. He adds a little bit of humor when he talks about different philosophies and assigns papers and quizzes about almost all of them.
this class is difficult for a first year student who has a bare understanding of philosophy. He has two finals at the end of the semester, it is like my grade has to go down even after the amount of work I put into it to keep it so high.
Professor Heaney is a great professor. He is a tough grader on the one-pagers, however he does provide an errors-list so you can do good on your papers. There are a lot of mini-quizzes but most of them only take around 5 minutes, and sometimes 15 or 30 minutes. He is a super funny guy in class and always willing to help you if you are struggling.
Heaney is a great professor, he tries to make his lectures entertaining. You have to write these one pagers, and he is very particular on whats on it. It is very hard to get 100% on them. All of the quizzes are online, and the final is online. You read about 6 philosophers, so there is a little reading to do, but is manageable.
Prof. Heaney's lectures are engaging, but the workload is heavy. Lots of short papers, quizzes, and reading. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prepping efficiently.
