British, and that about says it all.
GREAT Pols Professor, very smart!
Great Professor and I learned a lot. It does require a bit of work though.
Really nice guy...interesting to listen to.
It is almost impossible to get any 'A' out of him unless you go 15 extra miles, but knowing the information well will always get you a B+. Take this guy because you will learn more than in any other class ever. WOW, he know his stuff and teaches it well
I learned SO MUCH from him though I only got a B. He's such a cute little Brit!
Awesome professor, challanges you and makes you really have an opinion about issues in politics. I change my major to ppoli sci because of his class!
Makes difficult concepts easily digestable and also is just a nice guy...kinda hard though.
Teaches everything very well although he should be easier with grades.
Hill's a cute little Brit who knows his stuff. It takes a remarkable professor to give out such stingy grades and still have an excellent reputation with all of the students. He's hard but he's a really interesting and effective prof. I def.recommend him.
I changed my major to Poli Sci after tkaing that class. Awesome accent!
This dude is quite simply one of the best teachers I ever had. Helpful, informative, interesting, and funny. I love it.
Steve is hilarious with "at the end of the day" with his british accent.
Hill is an awesome professor. He is HILARIOUS, but the grades are somewhat hard. If you give it some effort though, a B+ isn't that hard to get. Definitely a pleasure to take his class.
really great prof. a learned a ton from his class and he presents it in an interesting way. not the easiest class but show up and take notes and you can get a very decent grade.
he sucks so much!!!!!! i hate him
Great Pols. prof- very non-partisan and presents things in interesting ways. He is funny is a cute & geeky sort of way, heated debates often erupt and are the highlight of the class. Always looked forward to this class.
what a great guy...funny, non-partisan, intersting, and stimulating...professor hill might be a little difficult, but assuming you pay attention and have some brains, you'll get at least a b
I'm kind of indifferent about this professor. The classes are kind of boring, but he is very clear about the information. His study guides are very helpful. He gives us a lot of extra points on tests if the class doesn't do very well as a whole.
he's a funny brit. he knows what he is doing, great teacher, very well informed. Take one of his classes before you graduate.
Good teacher. Take good notes... they are necessary for the 3 tests which your entire grade is based on. Otherwise, there isn't any homework, and his class discussions are interesting
He is awesome. I recommend him to anyone. Tests are kinda hard, but if you go to class and pay attention and then study your notes, you will do fine. He makes the class pay attention and answer sometimes, but he is great. and he has cute TAs sometimes!
He has a wealth of knowledge, and is a good teacher in some ways. But the class is VERY HARD. I pulled a C in the class, but if you take good notes, and study hard for the exams, you should be fine.
One of the best teachers I have had at UWEC. Very clear about portraying his ideas and overall and interesting class. Plus, I have never seen a teacher use so many different types of media to really liven up class - it is like you are doing politics instead of just learning about some abstract thi
Good teacher, great guy... his tests are a little different, some of the questions test more your memorization than your understanding of the concepts he was teaching...but overall pretty good.
one of the better prof ive had in college. test were difficult but great class discussions and lectures
Funny funny man!!! Very clear well organized lectures. Hilarious examples that serve not only for entertainment value but functional value as well. Great class, smart prof. One of the few classes I always look forward to.
best pols class around
His classes are a little boring if youre not into what hes teaching. He only has 3 tests so make sure you do well on them. He is a little enthusiastic about the topic he tends to drift off a little bit. You really just need to study notes, basically is the test. Attendance is graded, B easily manageable.
Dr. Hill is awesome! He is very tough grader but so far he is the best professor I have had. I would suggest taking the course just to have him as a prof.
Hes enthusiastic and makes funny jokes here and there but there are only 3 tests and no assignments or anything so study hard! be ready for essay questions. good teacher overall, but difficult if you dont take test well.
Made politics interesting with using current events and tying it to past events in history, very helpful, need to attend classes to get notes, tests are hard but if you know it you'll be fine
Fun guy. He's really interested in the material. However, the tests are very hard. That's all there is in the class so your grade is based off the 3 tests. Study study study! at least make sure you completely understand the concepts and little details.
He is a great professor and I loved the class, classes usually went by quickly. He is a very hard grader and the multiple choice questions are usually on specific facts mentioned in class. take good notes, study, and you will be fine.
Knows what he is talking about and makes class interesting with his british accent.
I absolutely hated this class. Professor Hill is a very nice guy and VERY knowledgable about the information, but he is an extremely hard grader. It's supposed to be an introductory level course, but there is NO WAY it it introductory. My GPA was demolished after taking this class. Stay away!!
your grade is based on three very difficult tests, plus attendance, so it is easy to ruin your grade if you bomb one test. as far as hill goes, he is extremely smart and leads very interesting discussions. do yourself a favor and don't skip and take really good class notes.
Three very hard tests are 90% of your grade. The other 10% is attendance. But go to class because the tests are based completely off the notes taken in class! Great teacher, but the tests are hard
Nice guy, keeps it interesting and likes to stimulate discussion.
Good teacher. But i've never been fond of politics
Hill is a funny british guy who knows poli sci hardcore. Tests can be super hard- you really really need to know the content for his essays, which are based purley on lecture. For the essays you need to remember his key words and phrases- and repeat them.
like everyone else says, his tests are HARD. and require alot of studying. but if you go into detail you should be okay. lectures can be pretty darn boring.....especially if your not interested in politics....
His tests are way too hard. The entire class is taking notes off of his lectures. He gives no assignments so your entire grade is three tests...The test questions are very hard and confusing. take this class if you want to fail.
Grades are solely based off of two tests, one paper and attendance. His tests are difficult essay questions and he is a very tough grader. Nobody received a perfect score on the first test. His lectures are a bit hard to follow because he jumps around a lot and doesn't write a lot of the notes for you. Bring caffeine to class!
Great guy. Great topic selection. Exams only, and these may be a bit unfair.
Dr. Hill is a nice guy and he has a sense of humor, but the class was a bit hard. I studied for hours and never missed a class. Still, the best I could get was an A-. He doesn't do the best job preparing students for exams.
Nice guy, kind of funny. However, this class was WAY too hard to be a 100 level. His class notes are unorganized which makes it difficult to study for the 3 tests. He grades the essays way too harshly (this is a pols class, not english!) Attend class every day and study hard for tests, then MAYBE you'll be able to pull a B+.
Nice British Guy...HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! DO NOT TAKE! This class was IMPOSSIBLE! Your entire grade is 3 tests. After the first test I had to drop the class. I thought I was going to do really well on it but ended up getting a D- and that was with the extra 5% he gave everyone because NOONE did good. The whole class is taking notes of off him talk
this class is not for someone who isnt into politics. he sends u articles to read almost everyday and tests are tricky. your grade is only from 3 exams. two of them with an essay that is 70 % of your grade. grades them tough and the MC are tricky. i would avoid this class if i were u.
This was the WORST class I have ever taken in my life. Only three tests the entire year and they are HARD!!! I went in for help and received NONE!!!
he's a fun professor who keeps you entertained by his charming accent and snazzy sweather vests. his tests too long for the amount of time given and you're guarenteed a hand cramp after his final. sometimes his questions are to broad to give answer. but if you attend on a regular basis, do the assigned readings, and take good notes you'll do well
Dr. Hill is an excellent professor. He uses power point outlines in the best way possible and ustilizes a variety of media types to present material. His class is rather difficult, though I've heard he made it easier over the years, and he is always in his office to dispense guidance (just be sure to keep him on point if you want straight answers).
I did not particularly enjoy his clas, and I'm a PoliSci minor. Didn't do a very good job preparing us for his exams. Grading is based on 3 exams alone, so the major for error is none. He really enjoys philisophical disscussions, which are interesting, but I left the class those days feeling like I didn't learn anything. Very smart man, however.
He's an amazing lecturer. He really knows what he is talking about. The tests are a little unpredictable though. He does give out brief study guides but you really need to know the material - it helps if you like the subject. Wants you to know the subject as a whole not just meaningless details from a textbook. Hard class but worth it!
Dr. Hill is an extremely nice person, however his class is incredibly difficult. He is an absolute genius when it comes to world politics, however he expects you to know the same. M/C is hard, essays are harder, whole grade is based off of 3 tests. attendance is manditory. careful taking this class!! if you work realllly hard you might get a B.
Really puts an emphasis on you knowing the material and being able to apply it-this makes essay exams a little tricky, but he is a generous grader because the class is a 100 level. Sometimes class can be a little boring
Really good professor. He knows his politics! And to be honest, he hid his bias so well that none of us know what his political views are. He's English too, so you get somewhat of an outside perspective on World Politics. I'd recommend him as a professor. But warning: His tests are pretty hard. Though he does boost grades up a little.
best professor I have ever had. Hill is funny and his lectures are always engaging and the multiple choice part of the exams are usually easy. This class can be tough at times since there is only 3 exams but if you study you should be fine.
Prof. Hill is a great teacher. The best I've had. He keeps his lectures interesting mainly because he's so into what he's teaching. He cracks funny little jokes and his accent makes it easier to pay attention. I would definitely recommend him to anyone, whether interested in politics or not.
he knew what he was talking about
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone for Intro to World Politics unless you don't care about your GPA. I am a poli-sci major and I will honestly tell you: don't expect to get any better than a C in this class.
International Relations isn't anything I get too excited about, but he does a good job at getting you involved in world issues. It's nice to have an international perspective on these issues. If you need to take 122, take it with Hill! Tests are easy enough, if you study you should be able to get a good grade no problem.
Prof. Hill is deeply knowledgeable about the subject, there were some fascinating discussions in class (particularly when he went off on tangents). However, the pacing of the class was bizarre - too fast some days, painfully slow other days. Also, he grades essay tests hard, you really need to know the material.
I thought the class was pretty hard; pols is definitely not my area of interest or expertise. But Dr. Hill is funny and helpful, not to mention approachable. Make sure you study, study, study, because his tests are hard (essay!)
Hill is a great teacher. Take his class. Just read the assigned chapters and goto class everyday and you'll be fine. Also, make random comments about Scotland from time to time. He's from England and will get all worked up about the Scots if you say the right thing at the right time. It's hilarious.
He's British! That's reason enough to take him. He is very interested in what he teaches, so it makes the class more exciting. Can be long though...tests are difficult. Last two tests you need to write an essay which is tough, but if you go in to his office hours and ask him to explain things more he will. Awesome Prof!
I loved Prof Hill ... One of the best teahers I have ever had. I had him the first year at UWEC, and although he looked nervous, he was awesome!
Actually had him for POLS 330 and POLS 335 and got B+ in both. I worked hard (though I could have worked harder), so don't expect it to be easy. He has a great presentation and his lectures are very clear. He is also extremely approachable. He knows his stuff and he knows how to teach.
Hill is amusing. Watch for the sweater vests and circle diagrams. He expects a lot out of your essays--your entire grade is three tests, and 70% of the tests is 1 essay. If you don't have background knowledge on World Pols, this will be difficult. Use lots of dates and numbers in essays. He knows his stuff and is a good prof. Hard, but worth it.
Likes: knowledgeable, great teaching style, willing to answer questions, funny with an awesome accent; Dislike: 2/3 exams have 70/100 essay questions (make sure you're prepared for the questions - outside reading won't hurt)
Great Guy! Lectures can drag but 90% of the test is based on them so pay attention! He was always cheerful, able to remain neutral, and gave both sides of every argument their due. RECOMMENDED!
AMAZING prof. Take this class. In fact, TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HILL. You'll love it.
Hill is my favorite prof at this university. TAKE HIS CLASS. You'll love it. If you are confused, just ask. He's really cool and will help you out with anything. Also, GO CHELSEA! (He's a Manchester United Fan...hahaha)
How can you beat a professor with a British accent? But really, he is great. In World Politics he taught the various theories in an unbiased manner. The way he teaches gives a lot of opportunity to form your own opinions, rather than hear which is "right". Very recommended.
Dr. Hill really knew his stuff. You can see that he is really passionate about his work and he is also funny. Although his tests are quite hard and tricky. The multiple choice was okay but the essay question was quite difficult. But I do recommend taking this class with him because aside from the exams you learn interesting stuff.
Dr. Hill is really a great professor. He's funny, smart, and dedicated. I had little interest in world politics so this class was pretty difficult for me. The tests have an essay that is 70 points (out of 100) and it's on one topic. Super difficult, you have to know your stuff. He has really high expectations, cool guy.
Hill is a great professor. He know's his stuff, but it's sometimes difficult to follow his lectures in class and it's hard to read his handwriting on the board. He is also a tough grader. I enjoyed the class most of the time.
Dr. Hill is a solid professor that really cares about students. He is always available to answer questions. A word to the wise: listen to him carefully, as pretty much anything he says is fair game and do the readings. Expect a mild challenge that can easily be tackled with a few hours of studying. Overall a rewarding class. Circle diagrams ftw!
Really nice guy and definitely knows what he's talking about. Don't take this professor if you want an easy A. Reading the textbook is a must!
Really nice guy and definitely knows what he is talking about! Don't take him if you want an easy A. Willing to help if you have questions.
Do not take this class unless you are actually interested in it. He is a very hard person to listen to...he lectures for all 50 minutes every day. Don't expect to get an A if you don't want to read the book. He wrote the textbook, so he expects you to read it.
Hill is very helpful if you ask for it. He uses a textbook that he wrote so it's necessary that you read it. I skimmed it but had enough background in politics to make it out alive. The textbook isn't a tough read.
Dr. Hill is the man. He is extremely knowledgeable and a great professor. I've taken 4 classes with him. The readings are not necessary, but will help significantly. To do well, take good notes and ASK QUESTIONS. He will make you think.
Professor Hill is a great person, but incredibly unorganized. Gets off on tangents very easily and doesn't stick to the syllabus at all. It's obvious he knows what he's talking about from his lectures, but they too are a bit unorganized. Tests are difficult, mostly essay, but he's a good resource. Ask him questions and participate in discussions!
Dr. Hill is by far my favorite professor at UWEC. If you come to class and do the assigned readings the exams are a breeze. Super helpful, and quick to answer any questions. I'd recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Hill is a great professor and really knows what he is talking about. Only four things graded the whole semester. 2 tests, 1 research paper, participationattendance. Can be a tough grader on exams if you don't use the correct terminology.
Great guy, funny, but class was long and pretty boring. It is a simple 100 level class that is easy to pass with little effort. Mandatory two books but I passed with a B+ without even getting one of them. You do have to do an outside event but that was easy. Show up and take notes and there's no reason to get less than a C.
I did not enjoy this class. If you aren't interested in World Politics do not take this class. Exams are hard and his study guides aren't clear. I do not recommend for an easy A.
Dr. Hill's lecture style either works for you, or it doesn't. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about politics, however his lectures can be quite unorganized and tangential. If you don't feel like paying attention, he lectures from the book. No homework, grade is based solely on tests one quizzes, out of class assignments, and attendance.
I have taken three classes with Dr. Hill. He is one of the most caring and knowledgeable professors out there. He has a passion for politics, but more importantly he has a passion for student learning. He is very unbiased. You will learn a lot from him!
Professor Hill is by far one of my favorite at UWEC. His class was fun (granted I am a political science major). There were plenty of people who weren't Poli Sci majors and enjoyed the class. Few tests, 3 tests (including final), some outside of class events ( 2 required). Textbook is written by him but it is SUPER easy and clear to read. TAKE!
Hill is an amazing professor and makes this class interesting. I've taken him 3 times and best professor in the Pollack department hands down. Worked with me through over a month long illness so I could keep up to date.
Hill gives great feedback and creates a good discussion. Ready to work with you and makes international classes better. Best professor in the polysci department hands down
He is clearly knowledgeable but his lectures are really clear and easy to understand. I liked him and the class a lot and I really did learn a lot from it. There are only 2 tests and a paper so it's important to pay attention and take good notes.
Professor Hill is very knowledgeable about international conflict and it shows during his lectures. The material may be a bit dry, but he does a great job explaining conflicts and does a good job keeping students engaged and answering questions. 2 tests, a group presentation, and a 7 page paper make the course load relatively low for this class.
Best, most caring professor I've had the privilege of taking at UWEC. The classes of his I've taken have either 2 or 3 tests, and a 5-10 page paper at the end. If you want to learn how to stop the Peloponnesian War, take one of his classes. I will miss this man.
Professor Hill is an incredibly smart person who really wants his students to be invested in what he's teaching. He relates everything to current issues which keeps the class engaged and interested. He really just wants you to understand and connect with the concepts. Pay attention and participate in lectures, and you'll do fine.
Essay exams and very few items count toward your grade. Harsh grader on essays. Material is 100 level but tests are 400 level. He lectures from the book so it's easy to skip or not pay attention, but he does make lecture interesting! Overall not a bad choice and he's a great guy, I just didn't like the grading system.
