Very approachable, very interesting, and genuinely helpful on a number of levels
Challenging. Passionate. Subversive.
Unfair, unapproachable, lazy. Totally useless class. Less and less attendance.
Fun class, not extremely challenging but interesting
class was monitored anarchy...good for those who need first year pre-requisite
Best english course i ever took because of him. Interesting class to go to. I'd take any other course that he taught.
Extremely boring class and prof. Hated going to class to listen to his input (the correct and only input allowed in class).
Very useless class. Creates teacher's pet. Full of himself and did not learn much.
don't know how to teach. not helpful at all. worst teacher I have ever seen. idi...
Hume is an ok teacher. He's a nice guy but thinks he knows everything. Assignments are fair but he can be a tough marker at times. His clarity on explaining what to do on assignments can be improved. He will give a dirty look to people coming to class lat
Very easy marker. Gives positive feedback on papers. Intimidated me for the first few weeks, then softened up considerably. Assignments unclear but he accapts all ideas and opinions with an open mind.
This is by far my favourite class. Hume is a riot, he's patient, and he recognizes when something he's teaching is dull. I find him very approachable and understanding, and open to ideas.
Hume is a super funny guy. He marks really easily, but his assignments are somewhat unclear. A very easy course!
Mixed feelings - his interpretation of the course is pretty boring/useless, but his humour helps class go faster. At times he seems reasonable, other times there's no negotiating... doesn't do anything to help me like English classes.
He has a very odd sense of humor and his assignments are easy, but a little bit boring.
not helpful at all. just an odd and boring old guy and thinks that he knows everything, maybe, but he doesn;t know how to teach, get some teaching skills first
He brought personal emotions to class. As well, students in his class feel humilated sometimes because of his rude attitude.
material is worthless. the man is shortsighted, discriminatory, and rude. don't believe? heed my warning.
knows what he is doing. students who want to be cuddled and lied to about their skill won't like this course. He know the material and is a tough but fair marker.
He has a good sense of humour beneath an intimidating exterior. He does, however, mark harder than average.
awful, plain and simple.
Seems evil in class, but once you get to know him, he is nice. Beware of the "Alien" essay!!!
rude, need to learn what is ETHIC
He is a really nice guy when you get to know him. He is helpful with assignments and cares that you do okay.
He is the hardest marker I have ever come across. Yet this has been my favorite class so far! He seems tough (when he tells you that a spelling error will cause you to fail your paper...he's lying!) but once you get to know him hes a really nice and helpful man!
I don't care what you all say, I thought he was awesome. He liked music students, ergo he was more awesome. I found that his marking style was in no way unfair. The class was academic reading and writing and that's what he taught.
Great guy, get to know him, he is very helpful. He knows what he is talking about when he says what he is talking about.Odd sence of humour, but at least he has one. Keep up the great teaching Hume! He inspired me to learn grammer :O

A great guy! He helped me a lot!
The course is worthless, but hey, you have to take it. Be glad you got Dr. Hume - he makes it suck less than it could.

An arrogant prof but knows his sh*t. Hes intelligent and teaches methods & usages of the english language which are essential to good essay writing (ie. proper citation) A tough marker. He tries to intimidate students to scare them into working hard. Dont be scared of him - just go to class, proofread your essays, and know your sh*t too!

i had to take this course at the last minute. Hume knows what he is doing. students who dont like him do so because they wont get a high mark (they cant write), but his marking is absolutely right and fair. High standards are what u expect at universtiy, right? he KNOWS how to teach.
Very understanding prof. Spent all our class time in discussions.
honestly, i thought 225 was going to be some stupid englishy class where you can rip off a b.s. essay overnight. Hume has high standards, and actually helped me to improve my writing. finally a writing course that didn't waste my time. hume is a cool guy too, and really knows his stuff.
He is crazy as you don't even know what he want you to do in class.
Class was all discussion, no learning. He knows what he's talking about, but if you don't write the way HE likes, he'll fail you. Best to just do what he wants, and you'll get a good mark. If you don't want to suck it up, you're screwed.
the Best prof I have had for a long time, especially in Economics. He knows he stuff. He's had REAL world experience, and marks REALISTICALLY. If you want to know about writing, he's the dude.
He takes a few days to get used to. Class involvement is expected and is a great way to learn. His realistic view on the world is a great asset and a breath of fresh air at UVic. Take 225 with him.
I did learn one useful thing in this class but the group writing "excercises" were a true pain. I came into the course already able to write half-decently--if I had had trouble writing, I don't see how I would have improved based on the instruction. It was mostly group writing--for a prose class? Who wants to write prose in a group?
omg, he was soooooo intimidating in the first couple of classes, and I thought this course would be a real pain... BUT, wow I like him now. He is always willing to help students, and you will be fine if you attend classes and follow his instructions!
Very unpredictable prof. I learned nothing in this course, wasted $$$.
poor attitude, very unkind person, teachs nothing, spends 15 minutes talking about irrelevant stuffs, then let you write a essay for 50 minutes, that's it for a 3 hrs class!! poor unfair grading, definitely picks favourites, once he doesn't like you, you will fail not matter what you do. totally waste of money to get yourseld disgusted
He is a hard marker. Dont be suprised to get a 3/10 on the writing tests. Be active in his class, and get prepared. He likes people who try hard. You will pass as long as you show him that you study HARD!
As the previous people said.

I took his class last summer, and I really liked this wicked guy! He appears to be intimidating at first, but if you really put effort into the assignments, you will see how great he is. I am an international student, and I think he is fair!!

It is funny that the University has this course to be a required one but can not take it anywhere else. If you take economics, have to take 225 here, have to take hume, come on, that is not fair already, why we cannot have any other professors( even though some others do teach, he is the one makes the paper)
I just think most people whine just because they can not write a single sentence coherently. I myself have ESL background, but I always went to his office hr. for help, and the dude was helpful after all, this is a Canadian University. If it was your decision to study in Canada for Economics degree, u better need at least half-decent writing skills
I am an ESL student and I had an A+ from this course. People get low marks because they don't write well. I've met some people who started to work on their research paper a week before the due day. I mean, do people really expect to get OK marks when they've done the work in such a short time?

He's great! He is extremely helpful during his office hour and he is funny. Do the readings and attend classes. Professor Hume's class was the only writing class that I truely enjoyed.
Professor Hume has turned a required class into a favorite. I wouldn't miss it.
This guy is a laugh. He loves to talk about legalization but you learn nothing in his class. Don't take it if it is not mandatory but for econ majors this was the best class ever! He is extremely easy as long as you can write decently well.
He's intimidating at first, but is really quite a nice guy. He seemed to pick on ESL students and favoured the pretty girls. Always offered extra help to those who needed it. He's funny though, we'd be talking about econ and then he'd do a brain-flip and start talking about the definition of WD-40 lubricant.
agreed with below he was intimidating but only at first. he's extremely helpful. make sure you attend class and don't be late.. it's an easy course
Im just wondering..what is a purpose of this course?
Very cool guy. Seemed quite strict and arrogant in the first couple weeks, but you will start to like him after a while. Always helpful and is a very fair marker. You must have good grammar to do well in the course, which may be troublesome for ESL students. Gives lots of bonus marks, so you're going to do well if you know how to write adequately.
expectations in the class changed constantly and were unclear. Not enough actual writing or feedback for any learning to be done.
Strange guy, but still good. Kinda unclear in how he wants things structured, but clear expectations. Don't really learn much in this class, and it is pretty easy. Fair, easy marker as long as you can write relatively well. Let almost all classes out after 30 mins. Hume is pretty funny and a fun prof, would take another class with him if possible.
A really quirky guy, but a good professor. It's obvious that he really cares about his students and the subject matter.
Class itself is completely useless, and Stephen doesnt help. Marks off for tiniest things, and does not make expectations clear.
Hume does knows how to expect his students to be, but his teaching guide and assignment is somewhat unclear. Oh did I mention that he's very strict about grammar, one basic error and your essay is 30% drop regardless how good the content is.
Hume is a very nice person and is very intelligent. However I found that he failed to teach much during the class but then had very high expectations. His stories are fun to hear and everyone enjoys them, the stories definitely lighten a stressful day but the time spent on telling them can be used to help weak students.
ECON 225 is an absolutely USELESS course, I learnt NOTHING from this course, and I STRONGLY suggest Uvic to remove this couse from progra requirement. I see this course as a money maker for Uvic.
The lack of structure and freedom to choose your own topics and present them is what he is developing inside of us! He wants you to feel free to express yourselves and not be number crunching machines with no souls. This class is about engaging in discussions, and bringing up your own material of interest in economics. Be Personal about it people.
I felt just as irritated as hume about the lack of people asking questions, I was the only one keeping the classroom alive. Classes aren't just about watching profs people, this isn't a movie. The ones that didn't talk felt the pressure when they presented to an audience as silent as themselves. It teaches students to be more engaging and interested
This course is extremely useful, and Hume is a master at what he does. I found him incredibly helpful and overall an interesting person. Don't be intimidated by him, he just wants the best from his students. The course is not hard, he just wants clear, concise writing. The textbook is really helpful.
As long as you do the assigned readings and look up any hints he gives you in class, you'll do well. He seemed intimidating at the beginning of the term, but he's just a funny guy. Entertaining lectures. Easy quizzes if you read. Drop by his office and he's super helpful.
An odd class. Hume preaches content over form throughout the course yet marks just the opposite. When writing the final paper make sure it is the EXACT format as the sample paper, don't try to get creative with it or your mark will suffer. Although the general idea behind this course is a good, Hume's teaching ends up making it of little value.
The worst workshop I have ever experienced. He was predictable, boring, and dominated the conversation. The workshop format was useless, contrived, and no one became engaged in work, stories or discussions. I hated this class, and I ALWAYS love workshops. Hume loves the sound of his own voice and speaks everything as if it was the most Sage Advice.
Hume should not be a workshop professor. It was awful. A waste of time.
Prof. is unfriendly and not approachable. His expectations are unclear. The way he expects us to write does not seem to be consistent with published journal articles.
Hume is a fantastic prof. Listen to what he says and obey to the letter, do NOT be late EVER and dont skip class. You will receive the grade you deserve
The prof is strict and somewhat eccentric helps you pass if you try. If you can write above a 3rd grade level (it's expected, we're in university!! some people in my peer groups couldn't) he will treat you well. Stick to sample essay structures, show up for class, and try to ignore his dry humour.
He is really nice! Go to talk to him! He is happy to encourage students!!! He even ask me" did u eat mooncake!?" So sweet !!!!
The lecturer is an old grumpy man. It is a common occurrence for him to just go out on a rant about random things that grin his gears. But the course is valuable asset to any one trying to learn how to write research papers, summaries, essays, etc.
He was awesome. He definitely had a good and a bad side, but as long as you got on his good side you were set. He told so many awesome stories and was really helpful if you went to office hours
The most legit prof. He knows what he's talking about and gave me useful information that will help me for my career in economics. Super easy as long as you read the textbook. Don't be late or miss class! He hates that!!! Really nice guy too
Only the BEST prof, ever. Hume's the man. Super smart, super funny, so worth it. Class recommended to everyone!
If u do follow his requests, u will just doing fine! As a Non-English speaker, I got 24/30 from my research paper.
He is a nice prof and helps during office hours. He is clear and also help in encouraging students on how to write more clearly and "precisely". He is one of the best prof in Uvic. If you really want to do well in writing, my advice is take this prof
you don't have to take this course if you received a B+ or higher in your english requirement but honestly take it, as long as you attend class you will be able to earn a good mark. Most annoying part was it was 3 days a week 50mins and you can't miss a class he has "quizzes" which as long as you read the 3 page article you will ace.
Stephen Hume is an unclear lecturer. I feel like he knows what he's talking about yet, I felt the need to visit office hours in order to understand fully. He didn't properly explain how to get scholarly sources so I failed the research project. Stephen Hume is the reason why switched majors.
This will be the easiest class you take. His explanations are clear, and the assignmentstest easy as long as you do exactly what he says. Hume himself is crazy. He let us go early every class and spent more time going off on tangents and literally just pausing and staring than actually teaching us. I learned nothing from this "required" course.
Very hard marker, his lectures are pointless as I didn't learn anything. I don't understand why this is a required course. He expects our writing to be perfect.
Pretty tough marker but is hilarious to listen to. A really stiff when it comes to formatting.
Hume aka Franklin, is the man. Stickler for rules and somewhat of a tough marker on essays, especially on format, but overall easy to do well if you follow his directions, especially on quizzes. Other than that hilarious prof. Often find yourself debating whether to laugh or soil your pants in fear. Incredibly entertaining. Highly recommend!
One of the best classes that I have taken! He cares a lot about how you write but tells you exactly how to do it. All you need to do is do exactly what he says and you will do very well. He is a funny guy who makes the boring subject less boring!
Hume has high expectations for the format of papers and in-class-writings. Do exactly as he says. If English is your second language go to his office hours for help on grammar, sentence structure, etc. and don't skip class. He expects the same level of written English from domestic and transfer/exchange students.
A nice guy who's probably just been teaching the class for way too long. Be advised, he's not an Economics major and his only experience seems to be working with the Vancouver Sun. Take him if you have to but if you get the B+ in ENGL 135 definitely avoid the class. You won't learn anything.
He focuses strictly on the format, citation, grammar, on the essays. Overall a difficult class but not too difficult to pass.
Important
He is very strict on the usage of pen and the structure, citation and grammar of writing. The class is very difficult, but not too hard to get a good grade if you closely follow him.
Go to his office hours, he is really helpful, although he is TOO strict!
He is one of my favourite teachers at UVIC! Yes, he is strict but if you pay attention in class you will understand exactly what is expected of you. He is always there if you need help so be sure to use his office hours. He is very smart and is also really funny. I would definitely take his classes again if I got the chance. Recommend to anyone!
You will do well if you closely follow all what he said.
Great
He doesn't respect his students. A lot of my friends have forced to leave the class just because they forgot to take the draft once. That's ridiculous.
My favorite teacher in UVIC!
He cancele class without any reason just few hours before the class begins, what he said in the class is useless and his class just wasted time. I wrote my paper with all my knowledge, he didn't teach any new stuff. Worst class and "professor " I ever seen.
You will learn nothing in this class. Hume didn't teach anything. You won't learn anything in this course! Never ever take Hume's 225, take BJ
You have to be able to laugh. This class is all about rolling with the punches and not taking everything he takes so seriously. Super funny guy, but he loves a little challenge. Ask him questions and try engage in conversations. He will love you.
Best prof I've ever had! Made the class material interesting and had a good sense of humour! I wish he wasn't only teaching Econ 225, because I'd love to take more of his classes :)
Professor Hume is great. He really knows his stuff and makes the class interesting. I wish I could take him again. Also, he has an awesome sense of humour!
Professor Hume is great. He may seem intimidating at first, but he is just a straight to the point guy. Follow what he says and you will pass the class with a 90+.
Very Tough marker, generally boring class, but if you are listening he tells you everything you need to remember for format (many times). He expects the same from international and non-international students so if you are bad at grammar, structure, or an ESL student be prepared to work hard. Final Paper is marked by structure, apa, content 10 each
Not the fairest of quizzes.
If u are an economic student, he will be ur nightmare throughout the years
Make sure you go to class and do all the homework and assignments. Lots of quizzes and reviews. YOU MUST follow his instructions to a T in order to pass. He once put up my paper said it was anonymous, boy was I embarrassed as he ripped it to shreds in front of the whole class. He should have used another's students paper from another year.
100% the best prof I have ever had. He is very strict but makes his instructions very clear and if followed correctly, you will do very well in the course. He is super smart and interesting, be patient.
Professor Hume is a good instructor. Be sure to listen carefully to every word he says and do what he tells you to do. It is tough for me at first, but once I follow what he says, it gets better. The research paper and in-class essays are important. And check the sample summary and paper in the textbook. Follow the exact format in the book.
Hume is good professor. Sometimes he looks strict in the class, but, trust me, he is very nice. If you have any questions, go to his office and ask him directly, he will answer your questions carefully. Taking his class on time and listening carefully is very important. What he said in the class always exists in the quiz. So, listen carefully.
He has a bit of a grumpy exterior, but he truly want his students to succeed and tries hard to help with whatever he can. Participate in class and he will like you. :)
Strict teacherbut good result. He loves simple sentences. You can get at least 20/25 quiz score if you read it carefully. Do as he asks, it will be very useful.
Professor Hume was an amazing prof. He may come off quite coldly, but he does care about his students. He makes it EXTREMELY clear what he is looking for in the research paper/other assignments, and if he says something will be on a quiz, remember that. It's not hard to do well. Just go to class and listen, and it's an easy A.
He is not respectful and unclear. When I ask things that he didnt make clear, he got mad and said I was not listening. He always makes students who ask him questions embarrassed.
He is so impatient and he did not teach us anything. He is also a tough grader. I had a conversation with my 5 classmates after taking this course, we think that he did not take his responsibility in this course, did not teach anything, but he is so "responsible" on giving Fs.
Probably one of the best profs I've had at UVic. I actually use a lot of the stuff he teaches in my other econ classes and just in writing in general. He's intimidating but also humorous. I'm not sure how his online class is compared to the usual in-person course, but its definitely not an easy course. Do the readings, and study the hands outs!!
Professor Hume may seem very strict, but he really has the best intention in mind when it comes to his students. He is very clear with what he wants and gives a lot of detailed feedback. In essence, he wants you to make all the mistakes in his class so you don't make them in other classes.
Uninspired prof for a really boring course. Very unforgiving with simple mistakes made during online courses. Also is very nitpicky with what he will penalize you on in your paper and work. Kind of rude with feedback even if it is very detailed. Not a really good prof for making Econ 225 any more bearable
He wants you to do exactly what he asks.
Uploads a 2 page pdf file per week. You might get a 10min lecture video of him repeating it into the camera if your lucky.
An amazing teacher and super helpful
A terrible and grumpy old guy
Professor Hume is super clear with what he wants. Follow his guidelines precisely and you'll be fine but if not you're screwed. Strict rules with masks and phones.
My friend Head and I almost failed our life because of him.
He does not answer questions. I have asked him a few times and his response is always "I don't know" or he finds a way to dodge it and brush it off. Would not take again, Would recommend avoiding him if possible.
his tests are extremely difficult and he does not give any part marks. be ready to get singled out in class aswell
Very ambiguous in grading criteria and quiz/test outlines. Especially for study materials, the ambiguity in what to study for is extremely hard to work with. Being thrown a website and told to study it, is not sufficient. Overall, avoid if possible. Otherwise, be ready to overthink and stress about not knowing what to expect.
A fair professor with an exceptionally light courseload. There was NO homework outside of class, and the 4 tests/quizzes we had were so easy a 10th grader in English class could get 100%. This class is hard for international students that don't speak much English, because of questions like 'what is wrong with this sentence' (it's missing a comma).
Class material is super easy and straight forward. Only assignments were 4 in-class quizzes and a presentation. Follow his instructions exactly and you'll do good. Only problem is if you get on his bad side, he will single you out in class. DO NOT use your phone in class!
Class felt like a high school English class. No electronics allowed in class at all. Have to do a presentation with no assistance (no flashcards or slides). Tests contain irrelevant material for the class. Prof loves to shove his superiority complex in your face and feeds off singling out international students and making them look bad.
Very light course-load, just pay attention in class and you'll be fine. Very attentive to students and willing to give supplementary material. People who don't do well are those who use their phones/and or miss class. Fav prof so far!
Professor Hume has a strict system, but if you follow it closely, you can do well. Avoid phones in class and use unstuckstudy and the free textbook to prepare. Tests are challenging, but attending and engaging makes a difference.
Stephen is super awesome and really really kind! I enjoyed the class with him.
