Often repetitive in lectures. Very few grades to begin with, and cancelled 2 of them.
Was repetitive, but that's required in a philosophy class, especially an intro class. Explained concepts fully and clearly. Very good-natured.

Although I liked the teacher, I did not like his style in teaching the class because he can be very confusing at times, well, most of the time.
A pretty nice guy that knows what he's talking about. He goes over examples well until the class understands and he is willing to help outside of class. Overall a good teacher.
Very confusing teacher. Didnt like his teaching style. didnt like his monotone voice. He always remembers if you go to class so u have to go to class. Nice guy just dont see him as a good teacher.
Prof. Jacobson made a boring 5th-grade level required class fun and interesting. If anything was not understood, he repeatedly made attempts to find new ways to present the information. The only problem is there are only so many ways to do so and some of the kids in class clearly need to spend a little more time awake and doing the reading.
Ehh. I paid attention for the first half of the semester until I found out that his tests are basically the exact same thing as the study guide he gives you. Funny guy and he explains the concepts very thoroughly. If you don't understand any of the concepts he presents it's because you're too busy sleeping and not doing the readings.
I love him! Explains everything with great clarity. Tests are a multiple choice and there are two papers you have to write. Great class that i definitely recommend.
He is a very nice professor. Pay attention in class, take notes, and review for exams and you should easily make a B. Make sure to complete all assignments (3tests, 2 papers)or an automatic failure will result. He is very helpful if you have questions.
Great Prof. Keeps class entertaining and informative. No attendance policy. Very laid back. Easy A if you think analytically.
He's a saucy yogi
At first, I didn't like this professor, but as the semester went on, I came to appreciate his quirky teaching style. He's very laid back in class, but this doesnt means tests will be easy. You will need to study/stay abreast of material. (This is college, so that isn't asking too much). He is very helpful especially if you show interest in class.
He's funny, laid-back, and turns mud into crystal. A very low-stress professor...just sit back and enjoy the class (and you will enjoy it). He's more than willing to email/talk about anything you want...he even lent me one of his books when I had questions about something.
Jacobson is a very quirky, anything-goes kind of guy. Sitting in his class every week was pretty enjoyable and very entertaining. You actually WILL learn. And as long as you follow the lectures, you will pass the class. Minimal studying is required if you're actually interested in the class.
Tries very hard to help the majority of students who've never bothered to think about philosophical matters and don't understand logic to get the concepts. But the class is agonizingly boring for those of us who are familiar at all with the subject. This class is either ridiculously easy or hard depending on your background.
Jacobson was my favorite teacher last semester. He knows the material and is also really funny. He doesn't ramble and is pretty clear cut with the material. You will have to study and you might want to go to most of the classes.I slept a lot during class and skipped a few times but still ended up with a B in the class, take him!
teacher is different... ver sarcastic. uses lectures primarily for test. goes off topic a lot. test are easy if you come to lectures and take notes. easy to understand. pretty cool teacher
Jacobson is a great professor. A little quirky, and sometimes his lectures feel like they go right over your head--but they usually don't. He's intelligent, hilarious and very willing to help. His tests are tough but you really learn the material. I'd definitely recommend him--especially for Epistemology.
Kept me interested throughout. I recommend him, and would take him again at least twenty nine times.
Jacobson is really qwirky in his teaching. He lectures the whole class period, so it is pretty important that you go to class and take notes. His tests comes half from the practice test he gives the class before, and half straight from hia notes. I would definitely recommend him.
He is great! loves jokes, is very clear, stimulates thought. I've had him twice now and wouldn't mind taking him again. You'll do well and learn A LOT if you listen to lectures.
Interesting, funny, and somewhat unusual professor, entire class grade made up of 3 tests with an opportunity for an extra credit paper that can bump up a B+ to an A- and etc. Everything on those tests is from lectures, so attendance is mandatory if you wish to do well in the class. Book can help understand certain things but not required
Spent alot of time on Decarte, but overall it was a good class. He doesn't care if you go, but go b/c he goes over alot that the notes that he sends are useless if you don't go to class.Gives exam a week before and a day before goes over it as a class, so go and actually answer the questions.Drops the lowest essay grade and has 2 easy papers.
Quite boring, unless youre into philosophy. High curves on tests, but class is just him reading over pre written notes and gets confusing. Study groups are helpful.
I highly recommend Stephen for students looking for an easy A. Very laid back and overall likable professor. You will have to sit through some lame jokes though but that's pretty much it.Class attendance not mandatory but recommended. Plus he sends you all the lecture notes to your email and his test(3) are off his notes.
This was the only class I truly wanted to get out of bed in the morning and go to. His examples he makes up in order to understand concepts are brilliant. One of the only classes I have actually grown from taking.
Interesting and funny, but some issues. Prof failed to respond to emails and to return final exam in a timely fashion.
Jacobson is a funny guy. He loves what he does. I enjoyed lecture, but I know some find it boring. His tests are fairly difficult. He gives extra credit papers. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you're someone who's looking for a class where attendance is not mandatory - don't take Dr. Jacobson. He isn't easy, but I took a lot away from him.
Not a bad teacher. I wouldn't recommend taking a philosophy class if you aren't really into this stuff because it is boring by default. I learned a lot but I wouldn't do it again. He's very laid back and will drop two lowest essay grades.
If you don't like philosophy, I wouldn't recommend him. HOWEVER, if you do, take him. He knows what he's talking about. Really cool guy (pretty loopy). He'll help you out as much as you want. Only bad thing about him is his monotone voice during lectures. Besides that, great professor.
Class is boring, but notes correlate to test, no cumulative final, he emails notes, I barely studied and got a B-
He's extraordinarily knowledgable on the subject matter and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in his class. He's very laid back and I respect him very much. He has a lot to teach if you're willing to learn. There is a "required" text book, but I never bought or used it. Grade strictly based on tests. Show up to class and they'll be a breeze.
very well known philosophy professor. very exciting class. he talks about GOD a lot. his notes does not have to do anything with his test. he gave 3 test. test questions are from lecture. not from the notes. so the attendance is mandatory. but let me tell you, no one wants to miss his lecture. lectures are very very interesting. take him.
Very experienced professor in his field. However, some of the topics discussed in class will not be present on the test. 4 tests and 1 optional paper. However, if you choose to do it and get a bad grade, it will still count towards your grade. So my advice is just don't do it, and study good for the tests. Some topics covered can be confusing.
Good notes, but need to attend class for clarity. No final. Need the book. Hard to get a perfect score. Interesting subject
Corny and make lame jokes but he's a funny guy. Test are fair, lectures are a must to attend, but you don't have to. Never bought text book and still made an A. His topics are interesting and would highly recommend if you want an easy A. He talks about God a lot, and he is very knowledgeable in the category. Great guy, great professor.
hes a brilliant man who made me want to change my major to the subject so i did.
Honestly great lectures, can get boring though. You will never get your grade back till 5 weeks after a test. Funny guy.
Jacobson's class is straightforward. Take notes from his lectures to prepare for the test. He gives you the essay questions a week in advance, and you review the questions the class before. Minimal busy-work; he wants you to think about what you're learning. Quirky and friendly but prone to correct you at your pride's expense if you're wrong.
A great professor who really knows his stuff about philosophy. Your grade will be determined by three essay-based tests. He does not give a cumulative final exam. If youre in the Honors College you will have one paper to write. Class is interesting and he provides notes for you electronically.
Pros: Gives test questions ahead of class, lenient on when you turn in your position paper Cons: Professor Jacobson finds philosophical insights so fascinating that he tends to repeat himself throughout his lectures. He will find 10 ways to say the same thing so others can grasp. Annoying if you understand. For this reason, I don't want him again.
Jacobson is a great professor and is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. His lectures are long and can be dry at times. However, if you don't understand, then he will stop to explain it to you better. He gives out test questions a week in advance, and you're allowed to bring a cheat sheet! He's extremely mellow/chill. Would recommend.
Boring. Spends half of class repeating himself and catering to below the lowest common denominator. Passed his exam after skipping lectures for 2 weeks. Good if you want an easy pass, bad if you want to actually learn something and be engaged.
Dr. Jacobson is very smart and passionate about the subject. I definitely learned a lot. But, the class is pretty disorganized and off the cuff, the grading is arbitrary (though not too harsh) and the material is pretty inaccessible to most students, in my estimation. Gives great feedback.
Mr. Jacobson is an overall sweet teacher, but his PERS2001 class was not as easy as expected. He only gives 3 test ALL TRUE/FALSE! There is no extra credit or homework assignment to balance your grade if you do indeed fail one of the true/false test so it's hard to get an A in the class. I wouldn't say it is a GPA booster class, therefore don' take
Very knowledgeable guy. Very laid back. He really knows his stuff. I learned most in this class just by attending his lectures. He outlines all of the readings in class and thoroughly explains the theories in layman terms. Tests are 3-4 short essays. And one final paper.
He makes lame jokes, but he won't call on you in class. Philosophy is incredibly boring as is, and he is rather dry but he teaches the material well and knows it. He can answer your toughest questions and will respond to emails quickly. He gave us our test questions a week in advance, so there was no reason not to get a perfect score.
You need to do a fair amount of reading and possibly show up to office hours to get clear on the concepts. He's laid back and doesn't grade too harshly, but the material in class can be fairly dense so make sure you put in the extra work to understand it.
Says the same thing over and over again for the entire class period.
Dr. Jacobson is THE sweetest little old man and a darling professor. He communicates the material clearly in his lectures, and he lightens up the oftentimes heavy subjects with doses of his self-deprecating humor. His assignments and tests are all straight-forward and doable. He is a funny guy, a reasonable grader, and an effective professor.
I see that most of these rates are from about 3 years ago BUT it is now 2019 and I don't know if he hates teaching now or if he is just lazy. Class lectures are so disorganized. You can't follow along to what he is saying because he bounces back and forth between topics AND half of the exam material is based on what he says in class. RUN!
Jacobson is disorganized, inarticulate, and even kinda rude when students ask questions. He's also one of my favorite professors. Despite his unorthodox teaching style, his classes are really engaging. Recommend you take any of his classes as long as you can keep up with the readings and not get lost because of the chaos.
Sweet old guy, but his lectures are just not great for me. Posts all the notes on iCollege and does review days before the tests. I stopped going to class at some point and still did alright on the exams (though I don't recommend doing that, they're not easy). He doesn't take attendance but can get upset if a lot of people stop showing up to class.
He's really sweet and sarcastic. As long as you go to lectures and pay close attention you should be fine. You have to understand the lectures to do well on the tests because they can be a bit wordy. Overall the content he covers is interesting and you're confused he's more than happy to explain it until you understand.
Dr. Jacobson is a great teacher. the subject itself is pretty confusing. but it was interesting nonetheless. and Dr. Jacobson does a really good job explaining things in a simple way (most of the times). make sure you come to class, or else the test will be confusing. overall, if you're just starting out with philosophy, he would be a solid choice.
Hes overall a really nice guy, but his class is based completely over his lecutres. And the issue is, his lectures are horrible lol. He really just rambles for 50 minutes and goes off topic alot and is real boring. You can tell hes very intellegent and interested in what hes teaching. Content overall is easy but if you get bored fast, stay away
Dr. Jacobson is nice and a really funny guy, I enjoyed his lectures even though the material itself was confusing. You really need to listen and take notes while he's lecturing because the outlines posted on icollege won't help at all. He does review days before the exam which are SUPER helpful. Tests are multiple choice with about 2 free response.
He's chill, he thinks he's funny and he is sometimes and sometimes he's not. The class is nice if you truly enjoy Philosophy, if not then you'll find his class terribly boring. He has a review day the day before the test in which he goes over the study guide, he wont finish the study guide because he repeats himself a lot but it is helpful.
He is a very nice professor and he does respond to emails fairly quickly compared to most. However, there are only 4 thinks you receive a grade on. 3 test each are worth 30% of your grade and 10 page paper that is worth 10%. He has weekly quizzes but they arent worth anything. The test are VERY oddly worded and its makes the class 1000x harder.
Professor Jacobson was very rude. The course was confusing and hard to grasp with no assistance by him. The material was difficult and he was very hateful if it was not understood automatically. He literally had an attitude when students reached out. I would not recommend.
Gives good insight and elaborates on everything. He likes when students actually engage in discussions, express thoughts, ask questions etc. I took this class Fall2020 online, I wish I could have had him and this class in person.
he is so so nice but this class is unnecessarily confusing. the tests are worded so weirdly, i definitely dont recommend taking this as an elective
Dr. Jacobson is passionate about the material he teaches. His lecture videos are insightful. He does want students to engage on the discussion board. Ask questions, express thoughts, etc. Sadly, your grade is only based on the optional paper and three tests, which are 35 questions multiple-choice, true or false, matching.
His notes or lecture videos never make any sense. It's always so wordy and not substantial information to study over. The tests are unnecessarily hard and he has no grading system that will help you monitor what grade you may or may not have. This class was a train wreck and 100% not worth the headache.
This is the 3rd time I've taken him and this class was very difficult, but he is one of my favorite professors. I someone saying he's rude, but he's just sarcastic, and you can be back. Definitely recommend him if you are serious about Phil, because if not his classes will be very difficult. He is always very open to helping- just have to ask.
I have gotten all A's since I started at GSU and this class is resulting in me hanging on to a B. The only information provided is extremely wordy readings that offer nothing concise and tangential videos from the professor. The grade depends on just 3 exam scores with little review and a professor that is difficult to reach.
You need to actually like philosophy to enjoy the classes. Very lecture heavy, and sometime gets off track. He is very sarcastic which some might not like. He gives great examples and answers questions. He makes sure everyone knows material before tests. 3 tests and 1 paper. The tests should be easy as long as you go to class and take notes.
The final course grade is the average of 3 Exams. The 'No Stakes Quizzes' aren't part of your grade, but they are very similar to the test questions - TAKE THEM! Material is based almost solely Dr. Jacobson's lecture notes, which can be unclear at times. Use the recorded video lectures to clarify the ambiguity, and take notes during those as well!
Honestly just rambles about random things, what he ate for dinner or how he brushed his teeth earlier - and it has no relevance to the class. Has a very short attention spam.
The professor made us purchase his book (costly), which was confusing and all over the place. The questions rarely matched the lecture, and the score was 1/10 (T or F), so quizzes are hard to ace. In study sessions, the professor gave witty responses to questions like "Maybe if you read more...." and went a roundabout way to not answering them.
would not recommend taking this class. his exams are unnecessarily hard and his lectures are comprised of very lengthy wordy paragraphs that are very confusing. your final grade is determined on your 3 exam grades, so literally nothing else, not even the quizzes are included in your final grade. the class was personally very boring for me. 2/10.
The teacher was great but this is the worst class i had ever taken. It was hard to grasp the theories and understand the information. He was very kind to me and allowed me to retake some tests I missed but I dont recommend Philosophy period. If you do happen to take philosophy then this teacher will be your best option.
I did not enjoy Dr. Jacobson's class. We have to read a textbook HE wrote and the quizzes are mainly where are grades come from and they do not correlate well. His tests were even worse. He himself is a nice and passionate guy, but don't take his class. The theories are difficult to understand and most people in the class were constantly confused.
I was extremely excited about this class since I love Philosophy, but I truly wish I hadn't taken it. The textbook for this class was written by the professor and tests were based solely on it. The tests were worded in a way that made them exceedingly complicated and your final grade is only based on them and 1 short paper.
He's a great guy, don't get me wrong. Just don't take his class (or any Phil class for that matter) if you're not genuinely interested in philosophical discussions. NEURO majors, stay away lol ---> please ignore that it's an elective choice. 3 exams, 1 paper, 25% each 1 optional 4th exam in case u do bad on the first 2
I think Professor Jacobson's class was easy for the most part. I do appreciate the grading curves he gives out for the exam.
DO NOT TAKE IF NEURO MAJOR! took this hoping to be an easy-ish elective but was rarely even neuro based and was straight philosophy. exams are extremely hard all worth 25% of your grade and 1 paper. chill guy in class but crazy exams are not worth it. only take this if u rlly love philosophy. TAKE THE OPTIONAL EXAM! also has text curves
Always off on a tangent and can be rude. Very tough grader, even harder since philosophy already doesn't have strict answers. Lectures were hard to understand, notes were not thorough enough. Online tests and one paper
He's a smart guy but he shouldn't be a professor. He just wants to get his ideas across and doesn't actually care about teaching. His class says no textbook required, but then he requires you to buy the book he wrote which he then grades out of. A lot of the exam answers do not match up to the book wording. Little homework is the one good thing.
Dr. Jacobson was a super easy teacher. Only tests and a paper for the entire duration of the class were due. He also provides online sessions throughout the class which are very helpful if you do not understand the material. 100% recommend.
Rude. Teaching skill: OK. Grading: (kinda) fair.
This course was listed as both a psychology and philosophy course. As a psych student, I highly advise against taking this class if you are looking to gain anything substantive to the field of psychology. The professor wasn't awful, but he rambles extensively without much clarity. I personally found the lectures unhelpful.
He created his own textbook for his epidemiology class. His lectures had very little to do with the material you needed to pass the tests which was the only form of work graded and he would expect you to be able to follow his confusing explanations and examples. You wont pass by using anything else, not google, Quizlet, or even classmate
This class was very stressful not because the topic was difficult, but because your grade depends on three tests and a paper. The textbook is hard to understand, especially in the beginning. Practice quizzes are given for the tests but no study guide. There is a curve which is helpful, but if you fail one test you might fail the course.
