Excellent teacher!
He's a brainiac who loves his subject, but I wish he would reach out to us more.
Great teacher. He teaches us to see the importance of the subject.

Professor Juarez is a free thinker!! I like how he does not let the system manipulate his frame of mind. He has my respects in every aspect.
complete jerk, very dry, dislikes republicans
His lectures are hard to follow.
Prof. Juarez is a great teacher! He pushes us to view things with more depth, and I really appreciate that.
overall jerkface loser
If you like to debate and are clear of what you know you'll be allright. He has a straight attitude of everything he knows.
hes a good teacher
Not a good teacher at all. Would def. not recommend!!! It's a hard class.
A great teacher. I sit in awe at his knowledge of history. His lectures are amazing. Yes he has opinions - but he always tells you when something is opinion and, more importantly, why!
tests are very hard. lectures don't make any sense, he like's to hear himself talk! it was a horrible experience!! almost everyone in class recieved a d on the midterm including me!
Mr. Jaurez is a great teacher. He pushes you to view things differently. Consequently, people may form a negative opinion of him, but he strives to teach history as it was, instead of bare facts.
If you don't like to work or participate in class you won't do well, this is why people run into problems. Stephen lectures from what he knows. He doesn't have to pause and look at notes. This man is incredible!
He is a great teacher. Knows what he is teaching and feels strongly about it. To do well in the class you have to pay attention and read. The tests are hard because many of the questions are from his lectures. Definately helpful if needed.
Confusing lecture style and midterm questions that are far from predictable.
ive had him for 17a and 17b... if you do not take notes you will not pass the class. He is nice but confusing at times...talks alot..but thats what teachers are supposed to do
I absolutly hated this teacher. humilated and degraded his students
bad lectures, bad test and bad attitude in general
i hate this juarez. class and tests are ridiculously difficult. dont take his class. not worth wasting a semester on this class and having to retake the course again! handle status
Worst teacher EVER. Jerk to students. Tests, pulls things out of his ass. Lectures boring as hell. He seriously should be fired. If you don't wanna take the class twice, don't waste your time in his class.
Mr. Juarez's class is impossible to pass with anything higher than a D no matter how devoted a student you may be. He is degrading and intimidating. Definitely does not help his students feel comfortable or ivited to speak up!
Unless you'd like to repeat the course the following semester, I do NOT recommend Juarez. He is an extemely disorginized teacher who tends to fall behind schedule repeatedly. Arrogant and belittling toward his students. Atmosphere is unwelcoming.
the guy knows his subject-problem is he doesnt know how to teach his subject to other people effectively thats why 3/4 of class drops. He is arrogant and loves to hear his voice. He is not an easily approachable guy. i never recommend him.
Well, what can I say I took his class and sure it was hard but I learned and that's what matters!!I have no idea why people complain about Professor Juarez he is understanding and a great teacher. I would take his class all over again just to learn. D
Likes to hear himself speak.
He is the worst teacher, he swears he knows, and when you try to comment on somwthing, he straight forward tells you that you're wrong and he'll humiliate you in front of the whole class
One of the best teacher I've had. Mr. Juarez teaches at a college-level and has interesting lectures. He's fair...gives essay questions weeks early and even lets you use outlines.
Very passionate about history and very intolerant of students who show little interest. Awesome lecturer! If you're taking this class just for GE and could care less about history then don't take this teacher! Test's all essay and short answer.
I did nothing in that class but mess with him the whole time. He doesnt like taking crap from anyone but I still gave it to him every day I saw him and still got a good grade. Dont take him if you are not serious about history though.
Mr. Juarez is very condescending, egotistical, belittling to his students and an arrogant joke! Do not take his class unless you want to repeat History. Stay as far away from this guy as you can. I never met an instructor who was as rude as Mr. Juarez. I can't believe he is still working at WValley.
Mr. Juarez is a horrible teacher! He is rude, unwilling to help and egotistical!DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!HE HAS NO TEACHING SKILLS!
Do not take this professor unless you want to be publicly excoriated or are seeking to lower your GPA. Intelligent students will find themselves persecuted for differing opinions. Teaching style is arrogant, self-important and intolerant. He's also dept chair, so your complaint options are limited.
hes a hard teacher, but he was nice to me. i had a lot to say, but you have to say the right things at the right time. i think he does like to hear his own voice also. and dont take his summer class..2 hours of lecture isnt fun. esp in the morning. overall hes okay.
Worthless! The most terrible teacher and person I have ever associated myself with. He does not care about his students at all. He gives you no format or outline for what you should know. Gives Page #'s then says MIDTERM! I am right, you are wrong and BAM failing grade when you studied for 12+HOURS
He likes to use big words and acts like everyone is beneath him. When questions are asked to repeat he gets pissed. Likes to talk about himself and his dog. Horrible Teacher.
Prof J. is pretty passionated about his teaching. I understand why many review is very negative, because he sometimes acts pretty arragant. He is not the person who you could "challange". Please be aware that he controls great deal of participation and all tests are essay (could be subjective!!)
Mr. Juarez is a very difficult teacher to take. His course has a liberal bias, and some times he can be a little rude. With all that said, I think he's a very interesting man. Juarez has passion in his teaching, that helped keep my interset in the course material. He prepares you.
Not an easy teacher. Usually gives take home midterms/finals, but if in class, they are difficult. He is the dept chair, so any complaints you have r best kept to yourself unless submitted anonomously. Not very clear on directions for essays, brags about his stanford education.
He's really rude and mean. And extremely biased.

Very Biased Teacher. Don't believe Zinn who writes your textbook, it is Marxist Propoganda. Seriously, not a single good thing to say about America, not a single thing! Don't speak up in class and don't question him. Also his essay's are "Subjective" which is his cloak and dagger move.He gave no A's
I can understand the negative remarks, but if you like a no BS teacher, then he's your guy. He is very smart and if you ask him questions during office hours or after class, he can be very helpful. By the way, he does give out A's, because I got one but showing up every class and participating.
Excellent teacher, if you are a History major. None majors might want to try someone easier, but if you take Juarez, you will learn a lot and be a better person for it.
I loved Mr. Juarez's class. His class is very hard, but at least you learn something. Sometimes being in his class can feel like your running a marathon, but it is well worth it.

This teacher is a jerk! He's very rude & boring...If he assigns homework, he'll never collect it. I would NOT recommend taking this teacher at all! Worst experience in a classroom-ever.
Juarez is an excellent teacher. He is hard because you have to know the material. I agree with the last person, if you keep up with your reading you'll understand what he's talking about and the lectures are easier to follow. Take notes! He really prepares you for a University class atmosphere
Juarez is a excellent teacher & misunderstood. He is passionate about history & doesn't sugar coat things. You might not agree with everything he says, but he gets you thinking. No homework, tests are essay, take notes, & if you read, lectures are easy to follow. He prepares you for University level
He could be a good teacher if he could just loose the chip on his shoulder. Unclear about miterm assignment. If you are a park mangement major DON'T let him know! Do the reading & take good notes. Don't expect an A (even if you know what your talking about)it just won't happen.
Juarez is a hard teacher to follow. He throws a lot of information at you and asks random questions to students and embarasses the ones who cannot answer his questions. I would not recommend taking this class.
He doesn't want you to know the material, he wants you to know that HE knows the material. Good teachers can make difficult topics easier to understand; not exaserbate things by using his enormous internal lexicon. Show up to the first day of class, to see how a bad teacher operates. Then leave.
This guy is a joke. Grades extremely hard and could care a less what grade you end up with in the class. Oh and if you want to know what time it is during the class, do not look at the clock. He will yell at you and try to embarass you. Good luck with this guy!
Every single lecture is intense. He is hard don't take him very unfair grader. Participation is important to him. I never missed a day of class did all of the homework and extra credit still gave me a C.
Stephan is an excellent teacher, he is so passionate about history, and he seems to know everything!!! he is a difficult teacher, but i prefer to call him challanging! :)

Stop whining, we are college students... suck it up! Juarez is just preparing his students for the difficult learning ahead at the university level. If your dumb, don't bother BUT if you are capable of critically thinking GO FOR IT... his class will make you think harder than any teacher would at WVC and thinking is a GOOD THING :)
Mr. Juarez is hard. If you are not up to the challenge then don't take him. That aside, he is a great prof. He is passionate, but sometimes unclear about midterms. Don't htink you can't get an A, because I did. All you have to do is take really good notes. You might have cramps in your hand by the end of the semester but its worth it.
MY GOD! Mr. Juarez in the best prof at WV but if you are scared by these comments then don't take this class. If you think it might be too hard for you don't take it. So next time I take Mr. Juarez I don't have to listen to you complain all semester long about how hard he is. People we're in college get used to it!!
Pompous, arrogant; no respect for the opinion of others; this man shouldn't be anywhere near a classroom.
he was pretty hard... the tests were hard.. classes boring..
Mr. Juarez has a large ego, very strongly spoken, careless of others feelings, and the best damn time I EVER had in history class. If your a regular JC idiot, dont take his classes... leave that for the people who enjoy is sense of humor and big poofy hair.
JC Idiot? If not for his class I would have had straight A's. He liked to hear himself talk and good luck if you have a differing opinion. The whole class was America Bashing over and over and over, I'm not saying we do everything right but Zinn says we do EVERYTHING wrong! Have fun anyone to the right of Karl Marx.
OMG he's *crazy*. There were 30+ people on the first day, by the end of 2 weeks, there were only 5 left. That should give u a pretty good idea.
Professor Juarez is the GREATEST prof. at WV. Im tired of sitting in class with a bunch of uppie babies, whining about having to read. Read your Book. Your in COLLEGE. Have your own mind, and you will do good in this class. He does what most prof. fail to do, EXPAND your mind. All he wants is for these stupid 19 yr olds to stop living off of their PARENTS Republican mind set and see the world at its own value. May be a little rough, but an EXCELLENT teacher.
This class was the biggest waste of time and money ever. He will be late many times and run over class time. By the end of the semester he will be about a month behind the syllabus and then tell the students to catch up on the material themselves for the final. He express's and pushes his own views all the time. HORRIBLE CLASS!! DO NOT TAKE IT!!
A terrible teacher. Unclear. Ego directed and he has no interest in students. He is always late to class and is not friendly. Don't waste your time. He has little knowledge and less teaching skill.
THE BIGEST WASTE OF AN HOUR AND A HALF BY FAR. This man is ridiculously self-enduldged with his "Fonzzy" hair and 80s apparearance. He thinks hes God's gift to WV and ranks him superior to his students. He lacks intelligence, charisma, and kindness that teachers are known for. He DOES teach his own opinion of history and psychotic LOVE for Jefferson
hes an awesome teacher! he knows what hes tlaking about in class and he will show u both sides of the spectrum of republicans and democrats although if your a HARDCORE republican dont waste your time!!! he should me new things and has an answer for everything may at first look like an ass butt you get use to it and hes not so bad at all.
Kind of...well...anti-Republican. But his views don't get in the way of learning actual history. If you have half a brain, you can pass this class. Don't take it if you need someone to hold your hand for the rest of the semester.
Juarez loves all these nasty comments, he is actually trying to be the worst rated teacher at WVC. He is an intelligent man, and a pretty good teacher, the only problem is his personality disorder, he often seems to be poor-spirited, he likes to speak to most students in a patronizing manner......and if he won the lottery he would not be teaching.
Intense and a good teacher. He's definitely an attractive man, yuup hott! If you speak up in his class, you will be rewarded for it. Just because he's confident and knows the material doesn't mean he's anyone to be afraid of. If you have problems with the curriculum talk to him about it. He's a lot nicer than most make him out to be.
REPUBLICANS &/OR HARD CORE CHRISTIANS NEED NOT APPLY! if you do the reading & come to class (I took about 7 pages of notes each class)you should be fine. he is sarcastic and has a dry sense of humor. sometimes goes off on tangents about the Bush administration: he's obviously not a fan. it's a good/interesting class if you are serious aout school
Juarez Sucks! Worst teacher ever. Never responds to e-mail, tests are TOO hard, syllabus out of date, test dates online are wrong, and expects everyone to be responsible for his lack of class management. Teaches his own philosophy of histroy and gets pissed off when you try and challenge him. I failed the class even though I tried my hardest. BEWAR
Though he was a very hard grader, Juarez really knew his stuff. He was the most entertaining lecturer I had ever listened to. I am usually a 4.0 student and got Ds on his tests though. It was very hard.
Prof. Juarez is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He has an amazing knowledge of history and is an awesome lecturer who really made history come alive for me. Not recommended if you're looking for nothing more than a class to get-by and raise your gpa, but very HIGHLY recommended if you're looking to be challenged and to get a real education.
Juarez dubbed me and my friend the "conservatives" because we would try to debate some of his points. We were not the best debators but at least we would speak up in class! Don't take his class if your not into studying and doing your homework. You'll fail miserably. AND don't forget to challenge his points just for the heck of it!
Probably most of the people that wrote bad reviews failed his class. He goes over briefly what he taught the class before if you miss one of his classes, and if you read the book, then you shouldn't miss anything. He was really helpful for me.
Absolutely the worst teacher at West Valley. He is an arrogant man who thinks he knows everything, and wants the class to know how educated he is. He's one sided, so agree with him or else. He's a complete ****. He embarrasses people in class, always raising himself about everyone. I honestly can't understand why he's still there.
The worst instructor ever. omg, I didn't learn anything, even though I used to like history...the class was a total waste of time due to his large ego.
I have never had a teacher who knows so much and has taught me so little. This is seriously the worst teacher I have ever had. This class is cool if you agree with everything he says, and laugh at his stupid comments. He loves his voice, so be prepared to write a lot. He is an arrogant snob who sees himself as the center of the universe.
This class may be difficult if you don't have an open mind and don't take what he says personally. He may be extremely arrogant and what not, but the simple fact is, he knows what he is talking about. You get him started on a topic and he can lecture away. Some kids may not like him because he isn't a high school teacher like some teachers@dub-v
I took this class online....quizes were extra credit. He basically grades on discussion topics, the two mid-terms, and the final. All tests are essay. He was often ill during the semester, and his ISP was also down often. His is slow to grade tests and his posting dates for tests often change.
Intelligent and enjoyable to listen to.
I absolutely love Juarez. He is a hard ass but knows what hes talking about. And hes totally sexy, so thats a perk.
If you are seeking a positive learning experience you might want to reconsider.
I wouldn't take his class if maintaining a 4.0 is your objective. He is immensely opinionated. That said, he is a very good teacher especially if you participate in class. He is also helpful when you go to his office and he's very nice when not teaching class.
i was told by many people to AVOID him. but i didnt listen so i take his online class, and i dug my own graveyard. he does not know how to teach, he shouldnt be teaching. he never emails you back. when you get your exam back, he never gives positive feedbk its always very negative and he is never clear on what he wants. please dont take him.
Horrible teacher. This guy is disorganized, very unclear in the assignments, and gives low scores. Tried to assign a project due during spring break and failed. Totally lame class, very boring book. Do not take this class.
He is a very unfair grader, I received a "b" and a "c" on the two papers that were assigned and somehow still got a "d" in the class. He is very unhelpful and loves to belittle people. He is extremely disorganized and incompetent. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Professor Juarez knows his material and presents it vigorously and unapologetically. A difficult grader, but issues very few assignments so he expects that a lot of time and thought will go into them. If you're looking to refine and expand your knowledge and are willing to put effort into the class, a great teacher.
Hist 17A Online Summer. He responded late to my emails asking how to start. He showed ego, no understanding, and covered his behind by saying I emailed him on day 5. His response on day 5 had both of my emails attached, proving I had emailed him days earlier! He still denied it! How sad. I dropped to protect my GPA. The bad reviews keep stacking..
I took him my first class ever in college. The man is very sharp and will stampede you if you don't know what you're talking about. On the other hand he is VERY appreciative if you ask questions and take genuine interest in the subject. He probably fudges the online classes on purpose becuz the're a waste of time and all teachers hate them.
This guy is unprepared and unprofessional. The present financial crisis was more important than teaching western civilization. Really how important is American Chattel Slavery to European Western Civilization? If you take his class make sure you digitally record his notes. This guy is a clown.
very hard
This guy is a joke. The worst teacher I have ever had at West Valley and I only wish I had gone on to this site before I registered so that I did not waste a whole semester listening to this guy. He is so unprofessional and mixes up classes and forgets what he taught. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS or you will seriously regret it within the first week.
Very Hard, has very strong opinions, believs he is much brighter than he is.
He is brilliant, fun, energetic, and takes no crap from poor students, so I fell in love on the first day. Surprise college students he expects YOU to learn the material if you want to pass. The midterms are hard, but I think you really need to know your stuff if you expect a good grade. I am more than happy with Mr. Juarez, and I think all of the
Awesome teacher if you want to learn (reason your in college right?). An intelligent historian who demands respect. Ruff around the edges his lectures are informative and in depth. I'd take another class from him.
If you like to take notes on just him lecturing, by all means, take this class. He doesn't write anything on the board so whatever you hear is what you get. Overall, he was really unorganized and asked the class what we last covered and would go off on 30 min tangents. But in the end, I got a B.
i took this class online during the winter session. if you feel like reading non stop then take this class, but i do not recommend it. This teacher gives the worst discussion/essay questions. they are so broad, then he wants the most in depth answers. really no feedback at all. just a short response saying how bad it was. save yourself. DO NOT do it
He was an easy teacher. half of the kids dropped the class and we basically did what ever we wanted... his tests are somewhat hard but i passed with a B and didnt even have the book
Horrible teacher. Gives very vague assignments without clear expectations. Even well put together essays are graded poorly because he is looking for something he did not specify in the original assignment. Total jerk to students, forgets who pays his bills.
If you want an easy A, you don't belong in college. You'll do poorly if you don't listen or take notes. You'll appreciate his approach if you actually plan on going some where with your education. He is doing students a service by not dumbing down course work. And he DOES give the info needed to pass his exam questions, in lecture.
Horrible teacher! Doesn't prepare you for exams at all and is totally and utterly unorganized. I was sick ONE day and he gave me all sorts of trouble and i ended up begging my doctor for a note so i could re-do the assignment in class. Overall Juarez is a lazy and inept teacher who didn't even bother to learn anyone's names...even the participators
If you want to learn and/or get a good/fair grade, take someone else. If you want to be bored out of your mind with a no variation routine of this idiot talking for 125 minutes, Juarez is your guy. Don't screw yourself, just take someone, anyone else.
I am carrying a 4.0 GPA heading into Juarez's 17A class. I read the reviews that his classes were difficult, but difficult classes is why I go to school. Boy, did I make a mistake! Difficult is not the proper description of Juarez's class... a more fitting word would be IMPOSSIBLE. HEED MY ADVICE: DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!
I'm an adult over the age of 25 and under 30 with the experience of the corporate world but I still had issues with his online class. Midterms and Finals are all essay questions. Essays are fine but he expects way too much for a first year college student. Don't do it.. move on.
Steve Juarez is not a teacher you can take for granted. He doesn't offer out easy grades but does offer you a chance to redeem yourself towards the end of the course. There is a lot of essay writing so you should know how to draft a strong essay before taking this course. Steve Juarez is a hard teacher but I don't give up.
This guy is totally pompous. He completely changed the curriculum from the syllabus, his questions are wordy and utterly incomprehensible, and he's a terrifyingly harsh grader. Im currently taking his online winter course, and I'm just barely passing. This is not for lack of effort on my part, but because its impossible to please this professor.
I have never had such a hard class. I am a good student and I have to drop this class even though I have spent numerous hours studying. His questions do not make sense and he is a very hard grader! Avoid this class!
AVOID AVOID AVOID HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE.I AM A HISTORY MAJOR AND HAVE TAKEN 4 DIFFERENT HISTORY COURSES SO FAR. I HAVE NOT SEEN AN INSTRUCTOR OF THIS POOR QUALITY YET. THIS PERSON IS EXTREMELY PICKY IN TERMS OF GRADING. VERY PICKY AS A PERSON AND WILL ONLY GIVE YOU CREDIT IF YOU SAY HE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR.VERY DIFFICULT TO PLEASE ..SIMPLY AVOID
I took his online history 17A class and the schedule for home-work seemed manageable. As it got further into the semester he wouldn't post quizzes on time, he wouldn't answer emails, etc. Also, his motto is that life can intervene for him, but for students no late work is accepted, PERIOD. He is a HARD grader and teaches from a negative perspective
First and foremost he is a hard teacher and you will see a lot of negative reviews for him. But he knows the material inside out, and he is extremely articulate on the subject. He will not dumb it down for you. A hard class, a good teacher.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE COURSE. unless you are only taking 1 class and don't have a job. i was doing triple the work of my other classes combined just to fail. example, you are given 3 topics for essay midterms. midterms have time limits. the computer picks your topic at random. the only way to be safe is to write 3 essays ahead of time. got time?
I ended up taking 4 classes with Professor Juarez. If you are attending college to have your ego stroked, don't take him. If you want wonderfully relayed history, with some witty sarcasm, definitely register. Read the text, do the essays, it really could not be any more clear than that. Ask questions, get his input on your work, and you'll enjoy it
Lots of people dislike this teacher because hes an extremely hard grader and his lectures are intense. In reality, the mans a genius. He has opened my eyes to so many things and has really made me critically think about history from a different perspective. He is setting us up for the real world, not an easy class, but extremelt rewarding.
Let me first say that this class is hard, you have to read the textbook and pay attention in class. But you will learn SO much! Stephen Juarez is an absolute genius when it comes to History, all his lectures are from his head. He will always help you if you ask. You only have 3 Midterms and a final. Amazing teacher, take him if you wanna learn!
Very self absorbed in my opinion, lots of notes. Not a bad teacher overall but from what I remember he loved to hear himself talk about... Himself. Lol
Despite answering his questions fully, he finds fault in your answers.Rarely responded to emails, especially when asking how you can improve. He has no problem complaining about your work, but is incapable of offering helpful criticism. The class average is roughly fifty percent.
I took him years ago for mex/amer history and his class was amazing. I never missed a lecture he is filled with opinions that at times might be harshed but he is just a genius. He really knows every detail of history off the top of his head. Years later, and receiving now my B.S. I can come back and say he has been my favorite teacher!
I have never left a review on here before, but for this guy I felt it was necessary. Not only were the online quizzes ridiculously difficult (with not enough time appointed), but whenever he would respond he was incredibly demeaning and made you feel like you were in 2nd grade again. Literally the worst course I've ever taken. DO NOT TAKE THIS!
I have never had a teacher who made me think that i am not as clever as I thought I am. He will make your brain hurt. not easy teacher, Really hard grader. Overall, do not take this class unless your major is History....Worst teacher ever.
I am a very dedicated, hard working student with a 4.0 and in AGS. I've been in college for 4 years and have NEVER had a teacher as atrocious as this one. So demeaning and unwilling to help. Talked to his students like they were imprudent for not knowing everything he knew. Very inteligent man, but the worst instructor you could ever take!!!!
I took History 17A over the summer so there was loads of reading packed in to a short time. He prepared everyone for this which was fine, his instructions were clear, but midterm and final were incredibly difficult & complicated. I appreciated Juarez expecting more from students but I was unprepared for the level of difficulty for an intro. class.
I took an online class with him and got an A for this class. He is hard grader on exams. I have to say he is extremely strict with answers and the readings are extremely a lot. Nonetheless he is a great teacher, he is really smart and his lectures are very clear. This is not an easy class, but A is achievable. You'll learn a lot too.
I have never had a professor make me feel so stupid. He it a tough grader and rarely tells you ways you can improve you test grades. He is incredibly smart but I think he has a hard time remembering that the majority of his students have never taken a college lever history class. I really wanted to enjoy this class. wish I had a different professor
Just no. This man does not utilize ANY teaching methods at all other than straight lecture. You would expect him to speak clearly rather than blow over every detail that we should note on. He doesn't give any time for you to comprehend, nor take note of what important information is being explained.
Well I received an A in his class, but... He's not incredibly clear about what he wants with his essay questions, doesn't really give you an idea of what he wants for quizzes, and appeared to be a little slow on grading towards the end of class. However he grades on a curve, is a pretty nice guy, and explains why he gave you a certain grade.
I really enjoyed this class. A lot of people on here say that he doesn't care, but that could not be further from the truth. He cares if you care. If you ask questions and inject yourself into the lecture he is more than happy to discuss points that you are fuzzy on. He also helps if you go to his office hours, and is good at emailing back quickly.
I thought the definition of a teacher was to help their students gain an understanding of the given subject. Not so much with Juarez. He expects you to know the material without any help and is the worst grader of papers I have ever experienced. Just gives a grade, without explanation. And then you can't get ahold of him through email. STAY AWAY!!!
He is absolutely terrible, i took this lower division class as a senior at SJSU majoring in social science to teach history and might fail, i read the textbook, lectures etc and even had outside help..an actual US history teacher and I might not pass, he is not helpful and just keeps telling you to reread the lectures DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
The worst class I've taken online. No videos and no discussion or interaction with other students makes for a very un-engaging experience. Slow to respond to emails and slow to grade exams. No synthesis or relating of the material. What is the point of learning this history if you don't connect it to the world you live in?
I took his class as an online summer 6 week course. It was a lot of reading and lots of quizzes, and various writing assignments. But the quizzes and writing assignments were how he graded you. So it wasn't that bad because it was only 6 weeks and if you read & did the work you would get a good grade. Better than taking it in class for a semester.
He has no patience for anyone or anything. His classes are lecture style, which means stressful amount of note taking, and if you miss a class then you're done. He can be rude and has only 3 essays for the entire semester, with no revisions. He grades his essays extremely harshly and expects a lot out of his students. Smart guy but stressful.
The guy only makes you write 3 essays for the entire class. The rest of your grade is participation. If you're a good writer and like history, this class shouldn't be too hard for you. Assigns alot of reading but you really only need to read the parts pertaining to your essay prompts. Make an effort to participate as its 14 of your grade.
Don't take this class. The tests are online exams that are timed 80 minutes and based off of many chapters. In my class some students (not me) did well on the first one so he added 25 multiple choice questions in addition to the essay part. While only adding ten extra minutes. Lastly, the essay prompts are randomly selected when you open the test.
You guys. Professor Juarez is amazing! I took it as an online winter course over 3 weeks. Yes, an 11 week course covered in only 3 weeks is tough! There is a lot of reading to do! But seriously, he is so fair! He gives you an opportunity of 50 points of extra credit. Quizzes are 10 pts and midterms are 100 so an A is very doable! He was great!
Steve Juarez is an overall great teacher and knows his stuff real well in the field of US history. But all his lectures are old school which wouldn't be bad but he chooses not to use any of the white board, projector, nor does he post stuff online AT ALL. Basically, if you don't write word for word what he says, you won't pass. Notes are crucial
MIDTERMS ARE TAKE HOME, BUT REALLY HARD GRADER.
Amazing! If you really want to learn history then he is the best. Be ready to read read read. Also participate! It makes the class so much better. If you need help just go to his office and ask. He was the water and I was a happy little sponge. Would definitely take any course he teaches.
If you are looking to go to a 4 year school. This professor will prepare you for that educational goal. Listen, prepare your reading no do your work and he will help you out. Come with questions to show you are putting effort into the class and he will put just as much effort into helping you out.
Terrible teacher. He gives you poor grades without justifying it and lies about when he will have assignments graded. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
His manner is not friendly. His instructions are not clear or easy to understand. His grammar and spelling are terrible. Prepare for a lot of reading ,the text book, his lectures online, the power points etc. He has an attitude as well. I would not recommend taking his class.
I will admit that history is a hard subject for me. He definitely knows his stuff but he is quite rude and grades very hard. I would not recommend this class ever to anyone. He sits in a chair all day and talks without using a power point or a handout or anything that can make it easier to follow. His midterms and final are take home.
He knows his stuff but I feel like he acts a bit superior to his students. It seems like he passively insults us. One student apparently wasn't taking notes and didn't know the answer to one of his questions and Mr. Juarez was like, "it's called, notes." He's correct there, but please don't insult the students. I take notes and this offends me
He is definitely overqualified for this job, he studied in Paris and knows everything about History, he's so interesting. YES he's a tough grader BUT he's very helpful and sweet but it's up to YOU to go to HIM! Do not disrespect him or ask stupid questions but if you are interested in his class and participate, he's great! lazy students beware!
I just moved here from France and this class is definitely not easy but super interesting. Mr. Juarez is just so sweet and helpful, he always answers questions politely and the only time I've seen him dis a student was because the kid asked him the same exact question he'd just spent 10mins answering. He's super smart and deserves your attention!
I took the winter class and yes, its a bit tough, but not that bad as some of the other reviews are leading on. As long as you do the reading and follow his instructions, youll easily pass with a B or an A. Its the amount of effort you put into the work that makes the difference. You'll learn a lot too!
Juarez suggests that you create your own analysis of lectures and texts but he won't give you a good grade if you do. Just spit his lecture back to him and you'll ace his essays. He claims moral high ground and indicts other teachers of inflating grades but offers ample extra credit and has a lenient grade system-88% is an A. Take someone else.
This class was amazing because of him. He is extremely knowledgeable, knows his area of study very well. I would not agree that he's a rude teacher, he simply calls out the truth in lazy students. If you're going to be lazy, then why come to class? No one needs their time to be wasted. This class is very inspirational and he changed my perspectives
I love history but he genuinely makes me feel as if I'm not smart enough to be in his class and he talks down to his students. He is funny though. Very biased with his opinions.
Do not take this class. I take notes, participate, and pay attention in lecture; I'm normally an A student. He does not care to learn your name, makes it extremely difficult to meet with him in office hours (which were once a week for one hour), and ultimately does not care about his students. You will not know your grade. Only essays for grades.
Actively disengaging lectures. Been behind schedule the entire semester and tried to fit all of the Civil War in one lecture. Then, assigned us a final essay using a quote as an essay prompt and expects us to write about two guys he barely spent any time lecturing on. AFTER we turn our finals in he is going to conclude with one final death lecture.
Honestly one of the most inspiring teachers I have ever had, and I went to a supposedly "top highschool". This guy knows his history, and those that say he is mean or is a tough grader are just simply lazy. His lectures make you realize how little about the world you know, and how much reading you have to do to learn. Class is basically 3 essays.
Grade is determined by 2 essay exams, and 1 final interview of a Mexican-American person as the final. Participation counts as 25% of your grade. Those are the only things which count for your grade. Knows his stuff; pretty much a walking history textbook. No worksheets, no pop quizzes, no powerpoint slides. All lecture learning.
terrible professor. his emails are so long and you can tell even through email how he looks down on people. 10 quizzes, 20 questions in 25 minutes and answers are on google Midterm1: 1 essay, 2 prompts randomized by canvas Midterm2: mult choice, 1 essay w/ 2 prompts randomized 1 Final essay DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Hardest class I've ever had! My biggest issue is the amount of reading .2 textbooks on top of 11 very long but very helpful lectures. It's hard to comprehend that much info in 4 weeks. Take the longer class or take the accelerated course alone. Professor puts it all out there, clear expectations. Takes extra extra effort to get good scores.
Honestly for someone who is just trying to get History over with for transferring it isn't a class thats impossible to pass. I honestly have no interest in History, but I passed with an A. I would say perhaps take it online in winter for a better experience. Honestly not even that hard from what people say just gotta work for it.
Horrible class. He doesn't write ANYTHING down & talks the entire time. I respect how smart he is, but it doesn't mean you can teach a class. I worked my butt off & the grade unfortunately didn't reflect that. Doesn't use CANVAS either & he is just down right rude. If you're a female, have an opinion & respect yourself DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Juárez is not your typical teacher. He will not sugar coat any injustices that happened to Mex-Americans back then and right now. He does not use canvas or slides. His class is lecture heavy so, make sure to take notes on what he says bc you have midterm papers but, No pop quizzes or tests. Not a hard class if you know how to write essays.
Terrible, biased professor. Expect him to trail off quite a bit, expect political rants, expect him to shut down opinions different than his. Unreal how rude this professor is, when asked for him to repeat a prompt that he was reading too fast he began to mock the student by reading each word at a "dumbing" rate. Graded on 3 essays and thats it.
He is kinda boring, typically only has 3 essays the entire semester. Talks the entire class period about history. He is a tough grader and papers are based off of what he talks about in class. Don't really need the books for this class either.
Professor Juarez sends insanely long emails to his students that completely confuse students as to what we are doing. He is over qualified to be doing this job, and he expects students to know EVERYTHING he does. I took this class for Gen Ed and I wouldn't take anything with him after this. Good luck..
Reading his lectures and the book are crucial to your success in this class. To be honest, this class is difficult because you can't BS your way through the essays. You actually have to read and fully understand what is being taught. He's pretty decent at replying to emails. His grading is extremely clear, but he is a tough grader. READ READ READ!
Professor Juarez is a brilliant teacher. His knowledge in not only US History but World History as well is astonoshing. His teaching method is all lecture, but he does he lectures in a way that will captivate your mind with vivid pictures. However, this class was HARD. HE IS A TOUGH GRADER. But he makes his standards very concise and clear.
Teacher expects too much out of what is suppose to be a relatively easier course. Im taking econ and stats and this is my hardest course.. Due to high expectations for a history class that you will never need to know in life. ever.
Had him in the fall. He seems incredibly knowledgeable, but also very negligent of his class and students. Does not respond to emails promptly at all! He has a complete superiority complex, which is incredibly intimidating for students, even though it is an online course. I highly discourage taking this class.
This class was ALL reading the textbook and doing quizzes/ essays. On quizzes I was told by him "there are multiple right choices but you have to pick the most correct answer" WHAT THE HECK! Quizzes are all multiple choice and tests are usually an essay. " Discussions" are not discussions they are just another essay prompt.
I took this class Online for a summer class. I think overall he isn't that hard of a professor, you just need to read and understand the essay questions he asks. The quiz's aren't that hard either if you do the reading. Im not the best student and I found this class to be pretty average.
Where to begin... His class overall was an odd experience. I'll just say we started class with 40 kids and ended with 10-15 if that says anything for you. There's only 4 things graded. 3 essays and participation. Just make sure to ask for advice on your structure on essays and you'll be okay.
He is a hard grader and I with my 3.6GPA I have never received a D grade until his class. Expects far too much specificity from his students in testing. The way he responds he comes off as arrogant. He is obviously intelligent and I can respect that, but he is obnoxious. Average grading for class on midterm was 46%.
Online class is chill. Lots of reading from two texts. Two essay midterms, one final, and a couple quizzes. Understand the reading and provide historical info to back up your arguments in your essays and you'll be fine.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had and I never have any issues with any professors I am a 3.5GPA student and this class was horrible , belittles you like no other. If you take the class good luck.
I'm a straight-A student and this teacher was awful. Completely didn't answer any of my questions I asked and emails were long but very vague. DONT TAKE HIM for history!!!
Stuck up and rude, does not help with questions, and is an extremely tough grader. Your grade is based on only three essays.
His test questions are vague, and he is a very tough grader. He sends out an email before the exams that specify points that we should focus on, but on the exam, he expects a completely different answer. Also, his feedback is a bit rude and condescending.
I would not recommend taking this professor's class. He tests on his lectures that are extremely difficult to follow. I depended on textbooks to barely pass the class due to his lectures being extremely difficult to understand. His test questions are vague and he grades too hard. He expects students to already have knowledge of American history.
Don't take his class! He tests on his lectures that are extremely difficult to follow along because of the intellectual vocabulary he uses to describe the American history. He also jumps between different time periods in his lectures, which makes it even more difficult to understand. This was the hardest class I have ever taken.
This class was very boring and hard. I feel that the professor is inconsiderate of the amount of work his students have. I think he feels that by giving you a lot of work that he is pushing you to be your best, but in reality I feel that he sets his students up for failure. It's just too much, and all he does is lecture the entire class.
Easily the worst instructor I've had in my life and that includes throughout my time in the military. Lectures are not given in a cohesive manner. He jumps around a lot in his lectures and goes off on tangents numerous times during any given class. The worst thing is he flat out lies during his lectures in order to validate his opinions. Don't take
This is a course that sets up the the student to FAIL rather than succeed The lectures are inconsistent to the textbook Chapters and will throw you off if you don't CAREFULLY read his weekly memo thats drags on like a dissertation. Not your typical community college GE course, you will get an IVY LEAGUE quality course and 1/2 price!!
The instructor definitely enjoys this topic more so than anyone else. Very self centered. He requires you to write essays for midterms and final (80 mins) He doesn't care if you have other classes or a life, or the mere fact that this is a junior college and this is a GE course. Hopefully I will get a survey from the college!??
This teacher has been the worst I have ever had. I thook 17a as a winter class online after doing all the work and having a B in the class he dropped me with no notice. Once I finally was able to contact him he said I had missed an assignment which is not true. I would not recommend you take this course with him.
Hardest class I've taken at West Valley. Heavy reading. Grading is only quizzes and essay exams. Juarez took forever to grade anything and respond to email. Expect at least a month to get feedback on your exam. This class gave me major weekly anxiety and I am a top level student. Not a good experience.
He is by far the worst instructor I've ever had. I'd do the extensive amount of reading every week and when trying to participate in class, yet any question answered that wasn't what he had in mind would result in him laughing at my response in front of the whole class. Very degrading, very disrespectful, very arrogant, very hard grader don't take.
Juarez was one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is rude and yells at students in class, makes snarky remarks, and has the longest most disorganized lectures I've ever experienced. As someone who always does well in school, this was a VERY difficult class for me. Please please PLEASE take somebody else!!!
This guy seems to get a kick out of giving students F's on midterms. He is the only American history professor at West Valley and uses this to his advantage. Please hire another professor! I will be submitting a formal complaint to West Valley College to try and get this guy fired and encourage all of you who have taken his class to do the same.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor Juarez gives you lectures that don't make sense, are a jumble of information, and then expects you to write essays on topics he didn't explain. To give you an idea on how he grades, on our latest midterm the mean grade was a 34/100. Good luck!
I've never read so much for any class in my life. There are also about ten timed quizzes throughout the semester and you would barely have enough time to finish them, not to mention the fact that they were the type with "correct" and "more correct" answers and you'd have to know every detail of everything you read (100+ pages) to get it "right".
Took him 3 years ago and still regret it. Please don't take him. Any class is better than this one. He thrived off of public shaming people for not doing the reading, motivation by embarassment. Expects you to memorize content by content of chapters. Told us 'anger fueled him to get to this point and be the first in his family to graduate college.'
I was in this class for about a week or so and I had to drop this class. He started saying how he can fail everyone in class and saying he didnt care. So rude of him.
The mean of the first midterm exam was below 50%. The highest grade on the first midterm was a 74%... If this doesn't help you I don't know what can. The man seems content failing his students, not to mention I needed this class to graduate. He did not care.
Mr. Juarez not only gives terrible feedback for students he is also one of the worst graders I have ever seen he feels that everyone should be like a history major. As a business major, this class was taken as a GE requirement however it's a joke I learned nothing from this instructor. GO WITH ANYONE ELSE I THOUGHT HE COULDNT SCREW UP MY MISTAKE..
Literally the worst professor at West Valley. He doesnt care about the students and makes you feel dumb if you ask a question. Hope he gets fired.
For class, he sits in a chair and talks for the entire time. He does not touch the board, pick up a book, stand up, or stay on subject. Seemed like a nice guy but the class is incredibly boring and he said the * - word about 3 times. Please, keep looking for a different instructor.
If you are taking History classes because you have to and don't really like the subject and you struggle with writhing, you may want to go with someone else. If you love History and can write, Mr. Juarez is a good choice. He's very knowledgeable and straightforward. There weren't many assignments graded so pay attention, and do your reading.
Talks for 2 hours straight with a blank whiteboard and assigns 200 pages of reading a week.
Its the hardest B Ive ever got. If you are working for your GPA never take this class. I took it online in the Winter semester and he was the worst of four winter courses I took. Zero understanding, tough grading, and only 2 extra credit assignments that are as hard as Midterms. The only food thing- for quizzes use Quizlet. Dont recommend him
This class is meant to be unnecessarily hard. 2 midterms are 1/2 of your grade, each is a single 80-minute essay question. The average mid-term grade was 55%. He validates his extremely tough grading by giving 3 potential questions in advance. You will write 6 responses to prepare and be graded on 2. I'd rather change schools than take him again.
Really intelligent professor, you can tell he knows what he's talking about. However, it's one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. He pushes for participation, but no one wants to participate. Mostly because he's really hard to approach- he makes you feel dumb if you don't understand something.
Not sure why everyone seems to hate him. Had an asynchronous class, so his only lectures were written. His commentary is extremely short, and he isn't very approachable through email. Wifi emergency due to a storm? Better get that midterm in anyways. Quizzes are pretty easy time-wise, and if you write decent essays you'll be fine. Extra credit!
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever encountered. He was late to class and within the first 15 minutes of class he called everyone in the Republican Party, facists. As a teacher who could have the influence on young students minds, this was absolutely ridiculous and I dropped the class. There were only three assignments- all opinion based!
I took this class online and the lectures were an hour of incoherent rambling with no structure, organization, or visual aids. The lectures always ran over time which meant students could not ask questions. There are two essays and a final exam with unclear expectations which are graded harshly. Also, the professor said multiple racial slurs.
Professor failed to give accurate information on assignments and tests. Assigned twice the reading he said he would, tested on information that was obscurely hidden in the text, and not the important information you need to know, was rude to me when I asked for help, and did not care if I failed or passed. Find another class if you want to pass.
I like History and Professor Juarez took the enjoyment out of learning. He does not provide much of any assistance when it comes to actual teaching. Dont expect to get replies if you email him. This class was very disappointing and I will never take another class from him again.
Professor Juarez is not understanding or helpful. Extremely hard grader and when asking questions he tells you to refer to his 4 page email. He also doesnt go into much detail about assignments and is not clear. Do not recommend taking this course.
Not so sure why he has gotten bad reviews. I am HORRIBLE at history but Juarez made it easy to get my credits and get out. Took short summer term, two essays which he does grade EXTREMELY hard. Get A's on the quizzes and beg for EC. You'll do fine. He is stubborn when giving extra credit, but will overtime. EC saved my final grade from a B to an A.
Grades extremely hard class average on midterms was 40%. And he doesn't see that maybe he is the problem and its not the students
WORST teacher I've had in my life, he just sits there and talks for an hour and 30 minutes and rambles on and gets carried away. The class is very unstructured. He doesn't give any help, and thinks that the students are the problem. Asked him for help about his very confusing email, and he said his email was very clear. His class is not worth it.
I honestly should've dropped the class when I had the chance but since I'm normally a straight-A student I thought if I put in more work I could get the grade up. WRONG. He doesn't assign any homework or allow extra credit but grades you on 3 major tests all worth 100 points each. 90% or the class will get a 60% or below on all the tests.
OKAY, so to start off, he starts the semester by talking about how he doesn't like the fact teachers have to grade students. Seems good, relatable. But here's the thing - he is hypocritical in the words literal sense. He is absolutely a hard grader, and the feedback he gives is pretentious at best and useless at worst. Take any other teacher.
Whatever you do, don't take his class. The chances that you'll get a good grade or develop any interest in history from this class are the same as the odds as Betty White coming back to life.
this man.... omg. don't be me and read the reviews on here and sign up anyways. don't run away, yeet yourself. this man gave me C's on both midterms and I ended up with an 88% I made the cut for an A but for a winter class, i 20/10 do not recommend him. he literally wrote fair enough and gave me a C. take Nguyen at mission for 17A instead.
What can I say. For a teacher that pushes participation among his students, he sure doesn't put a ton of effort into his online classes. Just turned in an assignment? You won't get the grade for months until you can no longer drop the class with a refund. Need more instructions? Good luck. You won't find them here. Run from this class!
This guy is one tough nut who I did not enjoy learning from. I took a history course with him over three years ago and I returned to write this review because he was the worst educator I experienced. I hated A People's History of the US for a long time because of how harshly he graded. Find another teacher (unless you want to major in history).
a big amount of reading home work, lectures, and quizzes
I took his class online a couple days ago, and I come to tell y'all avoid him! He gives no structure whatsoever and the average assignments for my class was below C average. Avoid him unless if you want constant anxiety
I hope to never encounter this teacher again. Without a doubt, the worst professor I've ever had and likely will ever have.
He never answered any emails to help me and I literally just had to teach everything to myself. I ended up overdosing on caffeine just to stay up most nights trying to read everything he assigned weekly and take notes on everything needed. Extremely difficult class and professor, and I hope to never experience this again.
Do NOT take a course with him. He failed over half of the class's essay questions exam. I received an F within the 30% range and my score was higher than the mean score. He fails more than he passes. There is no need to be this cut throat for a GE course.
Absolute worst teacher I have ever had. Has zero engagement with the class and is a very tough grader. Only had one exam throughout the entire year and an essay to write for the final. No point is waisting your time on this elective course.
Professor Juarez is really smart, but it's almost like he expects everyone else to be as smart as him. Unless you're a history buff or an extremely talented writer, I wouldn't recommend his class. I wrote a very thorough essay that perfectly responded to the essay prompt, and still got a 70. Only take this class If you really want to be challenged
Unclear instructions and very reading heavy. This class dragged my GPA.
I hated it. He promised grades before a drop date and gave it almost a week past it. If you think you wrote a good essay, think again. If you don't talk about specifics he wants, but doesn't tell you he wants, you're not getting a good grade. He tells you to reference his instruction emails but its just a confusing mess with nothing to go off of.
This proffessor DOES NOT give good feedback on assignments and projects at all. When he does his feedback lacks detail and is confusing to apply. Has three major essays that can either make or break you grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
absolutely horrible teacher. His "extra credit" is in fact not extra credit and counts as a regular test grade. He fails your tests if you use his lectures... while telling all the students to use his lectures for the tests and essays. He does not know what is in his lectures either...
Avoid at all costs. He has a huge ego, gives a lot of very unclear directions for papers.
The best class that I have ever had. :)
I used to love history before taking this class. Don't waste your time, you will try really hard and he will still fail you. He is condescending and rude in his communications to students, and not helpful at all. Not sure what this guy's trip is, but hope he gets the help he needs.
Mr. Juarez was dismissive of my questions and pompous in in responses. "I am rarely incorrect" he said when asking him for clarification on the grading of an assignment. He did not show any ambition to explain my questions. He dismissed my questions and deferred me to his lectures. "Well, if you read my lecture notes then you would know that..."
I feel like Mr. Juarez is frustrated with the online teaching format and it comes out as frustration towards his students. Unsupportive of students. Unclear grading criteria. TERRIBLE feedback that does empower student improvement. Be ready to answer your own questions about the curriculum, he does not answer them for you.
This class can be really challenging, but the free textbook and unstuckstudy ai were super helpful for preparing. The professor has high expectations, so stay engaged and use all the resources available.
I've never seen such a cluttered, confusing, immobile use of Canvas. Half of the links don't work or have incorrect information & due dates. When you contact him to inform him things are confusing & information is incorrect, he responds but doesn't address ur concerns & makes it seem as though you are the incompetent one. He clearly has 0 interest.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO INSTRUCTION!!! Nothing on canvas except the lecture readings. No announcement for test, no feedback, no grade on canvas. Nothing!!!
Professor's strong suit is his informative lectures, you will learn something new every class. Downsides are lack of canvas utilization (grades weren't posted for anything), very few assignments for the grade book (3 essay exams, 1-2 prompts each and a final self assessed participation grade), illegible feedback on essays. Take someone else.
Syllabus is not updated to match the Winter session, so readings and lectures assignments are very confusing to keep up with. There's at least 100 pages per textbook to read on top of the written lectures he posts weekly and sets unrealistic expectations for a GE/CC course. Leaves frustrating replies on assignments with no advice for improvement.
Expects you to time travel back to Revolutionary War and take personal pictures with the founding fathers and provide them as evidence for the essays. Extremely harsh grader, 3 credit class and he treats every essay like a post grad final paper. FIND ANOTHER TEACHER OR WAIT A SEMESTER SAVE YOURSELF.
Expects you to time travel to the revolutionary war and take personal pictures with the founding fathers as evidence for essays. Save yourself time and money and avoid this guy. 3 credit class and he treats each essay like a post grad final paper. THE 2 STAR RATING IS ACCURATE PLEASE DO NOT TAKE.
Got an A in the class and he put in a D in my transcript grade. Quite condescending, and doesn't actually care about helping his students succeed. Nobody got above an 85 on either essay, and feedback (on all fronts) is minimal with clear lack of effort on his part.
I'm so awesome and an awesome human being! Clap for me my students!
