It's America in the Sixties!! It's the best class that I have ever taken. The only class that has ever felt like a college level course. It makes me think. Huge work load, but it is interesting, so you want to do it!Take the class if you can! Regina Hoots

he was fun to have you get a huge work load, but he makes you think and you get rewarded for it, if you can express your thoughts in his class you do fine so don't sit their like a bump on a log
Professor Kercher clearly seems to think very highly of himself. Plays favorites in classes. Lots of readings and typically falls two to three weeks behind.
Never once have I had a professor that actually cared about how his students did and was willing to take the extra effort to help the student. The class was US History after WWII. Heavy work load, but students that put effort into the class are rewarded
I loved this class... it is a college course no doubt, but it is why I am now a history minor. I would get in quite the discussions in his class, but a little hint... go see him during his office hours and it never hurt to brown nose a little.
Errogant man, plays favorites, and his opinion is always correct. Thinks no one else should have a say, and if you don't agree with him you are wrong.
His exams were awful. Even if you studied, it was rare you got an A. He really expects a lot on the essays, and there are a lot of multiple choice. He does, however, look like JFK Jr. mmmm.
Yes, he is a hard professor, but his class is very interesting and the Power Points keep you awake if you don't like lecture. And the tests- it's called take good notes!! If you take good notes in class, you will do fine on the exams.
Very hard but fair. You need to pay attention and read the little books on the side. The exams are essay but you only need to touch on the points covered in class and on the little books. Show up and take notes!
This guy was one of my best profs at UWO. Im not even a hist. major! Go to class, take REALLY GOOD NOTES, read the little books, and study. His essays are hard, and he grades on spelling on the short answer, but otherwise not too bad. Fall of 02 we had a study group for the final. I got and AB!
Personally I feel that he is an amazing professor. You do need to read, go to class and take notes. But if you do all that you will be fine. If you are looking for a slacker class, he is not the guy to take history with.
He really does know his stuff, but he expects way too much for a basic history class. He thinks very highly of himself and acts as though we have nothing better to do with our time than to read 3 novels and the entire text book. If you're taking this class cuz you have to, take someone else
Content presented in an interesting manner. Although he is liberal, he doesnt force his ideals down anyones throat. Always open to others opinons....and not bad to look at
Grading is extremely fair: your grade will reflect the amount of work you do. A lot of reading, but pretty average for an upper-level history class. Lectures are interesting, heavy on discussion, so it's essential to be prepared for his class.
He was amazing. I seriously considered changing majors after I took this class. He is hard and can be frustrating at times but in the end I learned SO much from him.Wish every teacher was like him, he truly cares and is willing to help however possible to see you succeed.
I was immediately impressed with his intelligence. some may think he expects a lot, as in out-of-class reading and discussions in class, but everything you talk about is important come test day. i had mwf late afternoon class, and didnt even want to skip out on fridays. and hes really good-looking too!
Very good professor!! Excellent class to take. Gives options on what kind of exam to take. I recommend this class to anyone!
He is really tough and not understanding at all. He made me cry at one point this semester.
I have taken him before and loved the way he taught History 202. I waited to take his history of the sixties for a reason. I was then very very disapointed. He obviously didn't have enouch time to teach the class, as the syllabus was screwed up & he didn't even realise it til over half way through the semester,Then he had didn't even change grades
Kercher is demanding- he requires you to do a lot of work and actually put effort into the course. But he conveys an understanding of history that you do not get from every professor. Yes, you have to work hard, but you shouldn't be taking an upper-level history class if you can't put in the work.
A good all around teacher but his quizzes and exams are pretty hard. Hard to get all his points down in lecture. It you want a challenge, take him.
He was a very good teacher, I really enjoyed his class! I never had a professor who had a better understanding of history or made his history lectures so interesting. He explains the topics well. He gives an option of pure multiple choice (MC)essays, or Essay and MC--Take the essay and MC exam, they are easier and he likes them.
Stephen Kercher is gorgeous for one. That kept me interested. But he has an amazing passion for history that i cant understand he loves it and he'll make you love it. His tests and quizzes are hard UNLESS you do the reading--theres a lot of reading but if you go to class and you read you'll be fine. Hes makes everything interesting!! And hot!
Thinks too highly of himself. Doesn't care what the student has to say. Actually, doesn't even listen to the student. Expects complete respect without doing ONE thing to earn it. Falls way behind in class and expects us to keep up. Rambles about insignificant facts. He's a jerk and I will never take another class with him again. But I got an A.
I'm definately captured in class listening to him. He's fun to stare at. He's a hard professor- Expect a lot of reading and time in this class
He knows his stuff thats for sure, but he rambles on and on about things that aren't even related to the class. Quizzes are on reading and exams are on his lectures. Note taking is hard because he makes things seem very important yet aren't on the quizzes or exams.
He has so much passion for American History that I can't help but be reeled in during his lectures. It is NOT a cake class - you have to do the readings for good quiz grades. The study guide he gives for exams are extremely helpful though. Do the work. Excellent professor - I would major in history if I could have him for every class.
He's great! He assigns a lot of outside work (normally 50-100pgs + a movie about 1.5 hours long) to be done before the class, but I think this is what upper level history classes should be. He makes you think, encourages you to form your own opinions, and really makes the class fun.
Has crazy expectations! Will assign 90 min video + about 150 pages & write responses before each class...he acts as tho his class is the only one you are enrolled in. I have emailed him multiple times to set up a meeting to discuss class and emails go unreturned. Also requies a 10 pg paper with no guide lines of what he wants it to be about. AVOID!
Awesome professor! Class is difficult if you dont go to class. However, never read and got an ok grade. Knows a lot about the subject so it makes class interesting. Super yummy looking as well!!
He is a very hard teacher, there is a lot of homework for his class. The tests consisted of 50-60 multiple choice and an essay worth 40 points. Overall I found the class to be very interesting but it is hard to figure out what he wants you to know for the test.
Was an interesting class/topic but, there's lots of reading/videos out of class. He also didn't have any control during in class dicussion, which lead to many screaming matches between students. Overall, I learned alot, but really disliked the class.
He is an intellectual which i like in a teacher. I am taking him again for 369 and would recommend him to anyone majoring or minoring in history. Curve based, so if you are interested into putting into the work, you can get over a 100...i got several 120s; myself and 2others broke curves from getting +30 on quizzes when the ave. was 40...we got100
Very passionate about history. Very fair with grading. As long as you attend class and do the readings you will get a good grade. Gives extra credit for attendance, watching video clips, etc. Doesn't tell you what to write for notes, so pay attention! NO papers for this class; you take 9 quizzes and your two worst are dropped.
Very Passionate! Awesome teacher if you like History. One of the best orators I've ever listened to. Highly Reccomended
Professor Kercher is an awsome teacher. You can tell he cares about what he teaches and in doing so it makes class fun. His classes demand a ton of reading but the reward of a good grade is worth it. If you need any help he will go above and beyond to help you understand your question.
he is so great. you can really tell that he loves what he teaches and he is an excellent speaker, he knows pretty much everything, any questions he can answer. One of my favorite, made me love history soo much. if you study and cross your lecture notes with the book its soo easy. use the tutors they are awesome.
Kercher is a wonderful speaker and has a real passion for what he does. However, start studying immediately! get help as much as possible! I realized to late into the semester that i should be studying harder, and had no chances of passing. Not his fault, it is my own for not studying immediately like he recommended. Take 202 if you love history.
Great professor.Had 7books for this class, loved the choices. If your test taking abilities or your writing ability is low, you will fail.It was unfortunate it was a once a week class, twice a week would have been ideal. If you want an easy A do not take him, if you want to be challenged and learn, you would be inane to pass his class up.
He's a great teacher! He lectures the whole time mostly but he is easy to pay attention to because he is very enthusiastic! The class isn't super easy but it's def not hard if you do what your supposed to. Make sure to do the readings-they help A LOT. Very fair teacher and funny too.
Excellent professor and a great speaker. You can tell he enjoys history. Take him, you won't regret it!
Best History teacher I've had. He has such interents and enthusiasm on the subjects he talks about. He has an outline to go along with lectures and lots of pictures in his powerpoints so the lectures are intersting. Not a super easy class, lots of readings but if you do them all it's not hard! Awesome, awesome class/professor.
He is an amazing professor. I had him last semester and made me love history and consider a minor. Definitely the best professor I've had at UWO. Go to class and take good notes. His exams are hard I admit that.
When I previously had Kercher for 201 I thought he was a pretty bad professor. But recently having him for my Senior Seminar course (411) I really liked the guy. He is not the easiest but is very passionate about what he teaches. He pushes his students. Once you get to know him he is a pretty funny, down to earth guy.
Great Teacher! If you take history you have to have Kercher. He is passionate about the subject and you become passionate about it too. If are the type to slack off, forget it. Don't waste Kerchers time with that. This class is for the serious historian who loves history. I wish I could take every class with him!
He definitely always gives off the impression that he is better than you and has little faith in your ability. He certainly knows his subject but is not willing to help a struggling class.
Probably the best professor I have ever had. Enjoyed going to each lecture during the week and actually looked forward to going. You have to read your text book though because every quiz that he gives is straight out of the text. Also he is very willing to help you if you are struggling. I highly recomend this class!!
He is a nice guy, and he knows what he is talking about. However, the tests and quizzes are difficult.
If you want to actually be taught by a professor, stay away from Kercher. His lectures are irrelevant to the homework he assigns, and there is no textbook to follow along. He assigns 90 minute videos along with 100+ pages of reading per night. His quizzes are very specific from the readings. Awful class. I hate history even more now. Stay away!
I enjoyed having Kercher. He is a great guy and he is funny! But, his test and quizzes are very difficult! He assigns 100+ pages to read for homework every night. He acts as if you are not taking any other courses. If you are interested in History, you should be good.
Kercher is hands down the best college professor I have ever had. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about the subject and makes lectures interesting. It is a very heavy work load but if you are dedicated it will pay off! Highly recommend History 210!
Hope you like printing off thousands of papers a week. His quizes are awful and lectures are crazy long. DO NOT TAKE!
Prepare to read like there's no tomorrow, and then be tested on every little fact in the 50+ page articles he assigns daily. If you don't plan on reading and taking notes on every specific fact then don't plan on passing any of his tests or quizzes.
This is a class that is supposed to be focused on sustainability, but he makes us print 50+ pages to read. If you don't print them, he yells at you because you aren't prepared for class. His tests are impossible and focus on the smallest of details. Oh, and he finds joy in calling out the problems that students do in front of the whole class.
DO NOT TAKE Very unhelpful when asked for help. Doesn't like when you disagree or contradict. Readings are 60+ pages a class period. Quizzestests focus on obscure details. No rubrics, but acts like there is, &or gives vague instructions on assignments. Papers are graded in a extremely subjective manner. You don't write how he would, good luck.
I love history, especially modern day history, so I was excited to take this class. His lectures were extremely interesting, and you can tell he has passion for the subject. I got a lot out of the lectures, but be prepared to read, read, read. I would recommend if you like history, but if you are borderline considering taking the course, don't.
I really enjoy history, so I was eager to take this class. His lectures are very interesting. In addition to Dr. Kercher being really passionate about the subject, he is also very knowledgeable about history. The class is very time consuming and challenging. If you love history, take it. Otherwise, it's not a good idea.
I took Kercher over interim and it was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken! He assigned 100+ pages of reading every night. We had a 3 hour lecture every day with one 5 min break so he could get through everything. The tests were very difficult and required lots of studying. If you like history you'll be fine, otherwise avoid!
He's extremely rude. He puts material on the test that we haven't even learned. Isn't clear on what information will be on the test. You have to read over 60 pages a week.
He is definitely a fan of lecturing, and goes off tangent quite often so schedules and outlines often get squeezed in because there is less time than he thinks there is. He does care about your test grades but isn't exactly warm and fuzzy in office hours. I read every page in the book. You have to take this class seriously.
Professor Kercher is a fantastic lecturer. I took this class over interim so it was a lot of reading, but that is to be expected. His tests are tough, though he does curve them fairly. I would recommend him as a teacher if you actually want to learn the material. He is not an easy A though!
the hardest exams i've ever had at this university. Good luck
Let me tell you, History 202 was the hardest class I've took. The guy is nuts, who assigns over 100 questions on every exam. Do not take his course for interim, I really regret it. It was extremely difficult to keep up with the readings because each chapter was at least 40 pages, if not longer. He lectures like a politician, doesn't use slides.....
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He rants and trails off his own outline, but then wonders why everyone is lost. He tests you on material that ISN'T IN THE READING FOR THAT TEST, and stresses to note what's IMPORTANT, but also makes you focus on the most minut details. The curves are nice, however, I shouldn't have to rely on them.
This was definitely the hardest earned A I have ever had, but Professor Kerchers passion for this class and his emphasis on being available to help students outside of class made it possible. He curves quizzes based on the highest scores, gives extra credit , and checks to see if people are on the same page. Lots of reading, but doable.
It was a really tough class, but I also really enjoyed his lectures. He makes the material interesting. There was an insane amount of reading for this class, but that is to be expected with a history class. I would recommend him as long as you are going to be dedicated enough to keep up with readings and attending lecture.
This is the most time consuming, difficult class I have ever taken. It is an interim, so I expected a heavy work load, but this is over the top. Over 60 pages of reading every single day on top of the 3-4 hours of lectures that he posts daily. It is at least 8 hours of work per day. If you can avoid taking this, dear god, please do it.
Worst class I've ever taken. Makes you read 60+ pages a day on top of 3 hours of lectures (even posts lectures the morning before the test). It is nearly impossible to know what to expect for the tests as he gives you no indication as to what is important. Terribly run class, DO NOT TAKE.
This was a really tough A, and I barely reached the threshold with the extra credit he provided. The readings are LONG and WORDY, and I recommend you do them if you want an A. However, his lectures are long and in depth, so you could pass if you know and understand his lectures thoroughly. He will do everything he can to help you, so utilize him.
If he doesn't provide exam outlines initially, just ask! The outlines are long (10-15 pages) and simply lists of names, legislation, or topics, but they're very helpful if you spend an entire evening going through every point. I spent 10-15 hours everyday for the interim, but in terms of content, it's the best course I've ever taken.
There were hours of reading followed by hours of lectures. The lectures were hard to follow. There is quizzes often and the quizzes are nearly impossible. You have 20 minutes to take a 20 question quiz. Finals are the same way except 100 questions, 100 minutes. He curves finals and quizzes mainly because he has too, its the only way people can pass
Took this class as a first semester freshman. Very lecture heavy and lots of reading. On top of very complex quizzes and tests which we had a minute for each question which added stress. He is really nice and wants you to do well though, provides extra credit throughout the semester. He is willing to work with you if you want to do well.
While I wasn't supposed to be in this HONORS class, Kercher was a nice guy, but a bad professor. Even by honors standards, he expected almost 3 chapters of reading a night, while never actually getting to that material in his lecture slides, which consisted of a single picture and no words. Tangents were every minute about pointless stuff. Avoid!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. THIS MAN IS AWFUL
I took this class for interim but he required putting in 6-9 hours every day for work. There were no assignments, only 3 exams. The first exam was 134 questions that were all insanely hard, and the class average on the exam was a 59%. I reached out to him through email for help, but he never responded. Overall, terrible experience, beware.
This professor is literally the most difficult teacher I have ever had. He does not listen to his students, he gives you A LOT of work to do in a small amount of time. The tests are extremely difficult. If you have any way of not taking this class I highly, highly, recommend avoiding. HE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST! He should not be a professor, horrible
Hes HORRIBLE An insane amount of reading is required for a 3 credit 200 level class. He is opinionated & rants about the Covid Vaccine everyday. Makes me question his lectures if they are fact or opinion. He doesnt accommodate to different types of learning & says if you dont go to S.I. you will fail which is unreasonable to ask of students.
I took optional content: Reaganland with Dr. Kercher. He assigns an overwhelming amount of reading, but does well in lecture to make sure you comprehended the readings. He also asked for our feedback with his tests and provided extra credit opportunities. He can get a little opiniated, however in a highly-charged political class, how can you not be
Lectures just go over the readings, but attendance is mandatory. The quizzes and exams are based on an overwhelming amount of reading and he expects you to know too much for a 200 level class. I love history so I enjoyed this class, but if you aren't good with history, this class will be awful. Extra credit is a lot of work for not many points.
I've taken Professor Kercher quite a few times and he is absolutely amazing. The books he uses are mostly fun to read, the videos help supplement the materials, and the lectures cover everything needed for the test. He allowed the class to pick the format of the exams, and all of them were curved.
Reaganland with Dr. Kercher is my favorite history class I've ever taken so far. There is a lot of reading required, but the readings are pretty enjoyable and the lectures were incredible. We were offered extra credit, but if you read, turn in assignments, and show up, you shouldn't need the extra credit.
This professor is one of the worst professors. I was expecting him to teach in an unbiased way. When he asked if anyone had different thoughts and someone corrected him on historical facts, he would change the subject. He is supposed to be a cultural historian but is not on social media and assumes that UWO is a conservative leaning campus.
Do not take this class if you want to pass. Grades relied on quizzes and tests. Attendance is mandatory. Lectures were very boring and he rambled a lot. He expects students to learn solely on SI and the textbook. Overall, it is too much work for a 3 credit 200 level class, especially if you are not super interested in history.
hope you're reading to pay attention during the entire lecture. quizzes and exams were based solely on the readings and what he rambled on about during class. while some of the rambling was interesting, most of it put me to sleep.
If you enjoy hearing an entire lecture wasted learning about leftists like Mario Savio or Ralph Nader, go ahead. Why should the people who wasted a vote on Ralph Nader have all the fun? In all honesty though, some of the information we learned on the space race, John Glenn, Martin Luther King, etc. was important, but much of it was non-essential.
History 202? More like Liberal Persoec
Alot of reading required for this class, way to much for the credits. He also rambles on and on in class. If you are looking for a hour and a half of complaining about republicans and another 3 hours of reading outside the class a day this is for you.
One of the worst professors I have ever had at UWO. Tough grader who doesn't give any feedback, and strays off the topic of the day very easily. He is biased toward students and constantly degrades people who disagree with him. He likes to bring politics into almost every lecture and is a heavy democrat who thinks he is above everyone else.
I had Kercher online and the class was pretty easy. I honestly had one email interaction with him and it was pretty brief but still helpful. There were only exams for the class which made it much easier since it was an online class. Definitely a good class and professor to take if you need that history credit.
The tests and papers were really hard, there is just too much content for one class with so many details. He was helpful when I asked him for help outside of class, but there is just never enough time to finish all his readings. He responded to feedback well though and is making changes to the course. Nice guy, difficult professor
Professor Kercher is a good professor; however, this class is challenging. I took this course as a first-year freshman, and it was the most difficult class. I enjoy history, so that made it better. The tests are not easy, but he curves them. Show up, read the textbook, study, do the extra credit, and you'll be fine!
This class was extremely boring, with the professor only utilizing lectures with only pictures and a couple words of text on his slides. He will also share his political opinions directly with the class, and did so especially when Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump in the election, and only towing a specific party line when discussing politics.
