This teacher wants his students to succeed and gives them the tools to do so; however, his methods of teaching tend to be a bit chaotic. He uses multiple methods to solving one problem, and in explaining the problem the methods seem to cross paths causing confusion amongst the majority of the class. If you can get past this he is a good teacher :)
He's a funny guy. You will have to do lots of homework but it's worth it. Everything about him is fine but I dont think hes easy to understand. I took his Math71 class so its not a big deal but for higher level math I don't think I'll understand.
This teacher is too confusing, and gets off topic too many times. He gives so much homework that there is no time to actually study the material. He needs to turn the front lights off in the room if he is going to use Live Note - it is hard to see the screen with so much light on. His writing is too sloppy. He drones on too much.
This professor is very nice and very intelligent. I took him for math 71 the notes he writes on the board are so sloppy it's almost impossible to copy anything. I think I was able to take a whole 6 pages of notes all semester. the quizzes and exams are straight from the homework and he gives multiple choice questions. LOTS of homework but do it all
This professor is a nice and funny guy and is willing to explain things if asked. Lots of homework, but because it is neccesary to get all of the material down. Easy to understand but his writing can sometimes get messy because he writes too many things on the board or projector screen.
I took this during the summer. I will just say that it was one of the hardest courses ever (for me) because of how short the class was and how fast things went. IF summer is not your thing, don't take it during the summer. It's stressful. This professor is very quick with his lessons because he has no other choice. Put your dedication into the work
I've never had such a hard time in a class that I've already passed. I finished HS in Pre-Cal, and am struggling in his Alg class, What sense does this make? I tested into this class, and concepts that WERE clear are now WAY jumbled. Cons: Seating chart!!! attendance lectures anytime ANYONE is late!! Confusion! Retreat while you can.
Had him for summer and I think he did a good job considering that he had to cram everything from the book into 6 wks. Although I understood basically everything in class, I only passed with a D (lazy with hw/reviewing for quizzes), so make sure to things it in! Also, ask questions when you're lost, he'll be very helpful! He can be funny too.
Mr Lancaster knows his math but he doesn't understand that the students do not. He'll show an example and solve it (easy enough) then he'll move on and show the next example and confuse you. It is hard to comprehend what he actually wants you to know. He messes up his equations and gets lost sometimes too. He'll try to prove you wrong when he can.
Really good at answering questions if you need help (out side the classroom, not enough time in class). He goes kind of fast, but there is so much to learn in just the 16 weeks for the fall 2012 term.
This man is a genius I got my 1st A in a math class EVER with his help! Fast paced class. He doesn't make you turn in the homework but DO IT, all of the quiz questions are directly from the homework. Study for the tests ie do the practice problems. He is always willing to help in or out of class about anything you need.
If math is hard for you don't take him. He's fast paced and kind of snarky. Grades based off tests and quizzes.
Professor Lancaster challenges his students. He is not an easy Professor but you will learn and do well if you apply yourself and ask questions. He definitely teaches like a UC professor!! The most difficult professor I've had at Mt. Sac. What helped me is that he's clear and he is willing to answer questions. GOOD Luck!
I took him during the summer so maybe thats why i thought he was a but much at times. Do not come in late or use your phone in class. He will embarrass you. He goes on about how you will fail and are wasting his time. It was a bit like being in high school, but its only because he wants all his students to pass. Pretty decent professor though.
no good he is not worried about teaching the students. His syllabus needs to be investigated by the school. He promises to fail you if you miss class and will make you absent even if you are 1 minute late. He does not follow the school policy but makes up his own. someone needs to look at his policy and syllabus its too much.
This professor has no interest in ensuring material is taught efficiently and effectively. He is very negative and brags about how many students drop and fail his class. He does not want students to succeed, therefore rushes through material. He won't do problems over again to ensure the students understand and EXPECTS students to know procedures!
Overall he teaches the material in a clear and concise matter, most of the time. Sometimes gets distracted by doing hard problems. All higher level maths aren't usually a breeze for your average student, his class is no exception. Be on time, be respectful, do ALL hw and you will be fine. Replaces lowest test with the final, quizzes are from hw.
He can be very intimidating at first, but he loosens up throughout the semester. Difficult class but he was very organized. Best advice I can give to you is never be late! He takes attendance really serious.
not recommended. Doesn't sufficiently cover the material in class, gives very long exams. Takes too long doing alg/trig/precal in examples to get to the calculus. Doesnt like steps for solving probs "cookbook." Very snarky, especially when corrected (which happens too often)
Very tough teacher but will prepare you for the higher maths. Test are hard even if you study. He will constantly try to challenge you. Very strict on attendance and also has a seating chart.
Overall a very good professor, very clear on the material. 7 quizzes, drop the two lowest, 3 exams plus final exam, he will let us be very prepared on the exams. Very restricted on the attendance. He assigns homework, but never check them, quizzes are most likely from homework. I happened to misses one quiz, one class lecture, and got A in the end
He's good teacher.
Only take his class if you think that you are good in math and do not need a lot of help. He announces in the very first meeting that he already expects more than half of the class are failing/dropping the class. He also makes a lot of errors which can cause confusion in your learning. the only plus side is that his quizzes and exams are not hard.
Lots of EC. Give 7 quizzes, and take 5 best. He give four take home quiz and one full credit quiz for showing up. Exams are mostly from the notes and hw. Take him!
He makes mistakes in his lectures and doesn't go back to correct them. If you've never taken a stats you won't pass easily. He grades overly difficult and his tests questions are unclear. Homework isn't clear either. Wouldn't recommend.
Kind of stuck up and does not teach well enough for information to stick. He will also go off in tangents sometimes which gets distracting and annoying. He expects you to remember every math fact you've ever been taught. Don't take a class from him unless you're really into math.
I took professor Lancaster in Summer 2013. The 6 week session was very fast-paced and at times over-whelming. Expect a lot of work and studying, especially for those exams! If I had no options left, I would take him again. He has a great personality and isn't rude about helping out. Any 6 week long math course will have a lot of work!
He's a humorous fellow. I took him for elementary stats and regretted buying the book; did not use it more than two times. His notes and packets are entirely adequate for you to pass the test. I did none of the homework (which is extra credit) and got an A. If you suck at math, you'll suck at math no matter what review you're reading. Fast-paced!
I have taken him twice, only take him if all the other professors with good ratings are filed up and you need the class still. he begins the semester by saying half of the class will either drop or not pass (maybe because his teaching method?) the material is easy to him so he expects it to be easy for everyone. He is a hard grader as well.
Very bad professor. Won't go out of his way to explain something you don't understand. If you ask a question he'll make you feel stupid for asking it as well as if you are wasting his time. Very rude and condescending towards students. Grades very bad. Take him and regret not listening to me.
I took Professor Lancaster last spring. This man is a genius and knows his stuff. He tolerates zero nonsense, which is good for those who want to learn. Study hard, and you will pass.
Was one of the worst math teachers I've ever had. He's a snarky guy and expects you to be a pro. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Professor Lancaster is one of the best professors I've ever had. I had taken him for Math 51 during winter and had such an amazing experience I decided to take him again in spring for 71. Super helpful. Will explain in a way you understand. Homework is extra credit. Is clear when he teaches. Only thing is he gets off topic a lot but he's awesome!!!
one of the best professors i have ever taken. He will not ask you to do homework, but you must do it because quizzes and the exams are based on it. He expects so much from you because he wants to prepare you to higher math levels, also he has no mercy.
This guy is EXCELLENT at math, but pretty awful at conveying his knowledge. He takes the long way to get the answer to a simple problem. I , among others, were so confused by his explanations we ended up living in the Marc and using Khan Academy. He is friendly, but can be blunt, and his study guides for the 3rd exam and final were wonderful.
You have to really apply yourself in this course. You will mostly be teaching yourself. He doesn't visually show or do many problems or examples. He does explain certain topics and examples, but for those visual learners he's just hard to understand. Dont fall behind on the reading, do the hw, and participate. Good luck, you'll need it!
Well, I will say Prof Lancaster is quite good. He will there to you if you ask for help. He didn't care if you did the hw or not. I took him on Winter, and the tests are take-home-test (there you're allowed to cheat), except mid and final, and if u dont get it, come to him and ask he will give you the answer, he gave the syllabus and the grade
He's a good teacher, took him for winter and the tests were take home(except final and midterm). He gives his own notes so you don't need to buy the book unless you want to do the homework, which is only 10 points extra credit . overall a good teacher , he will answer any question you have. Tells a lot of stories to kill time.
Don't take this professor if you want an easy A. He can get a little confusing and his teaching style isn't for everyone. He is however willing to help. A lot of the test questions are based off book homework, so do it.
Lancaster was a great teacher! He's relateable and funny. He teachers on a sort of new technology projector, which can get a little messy but is clear if you're actually paying attention! The homework isn't mandatory, but he'll collect it and throw out your poorest exam, so do it! He's helpful when it comes to things you don't understand! Take him!
Professor Lancaster is very intelligent, stern, fair, reasonable, organized, and methodical in his approach to teaching which I found quite appropriate. His expectations are high as to class conduct and in a professional setting as college, it should be. Younger students may be bothered, but it is time to grow up! He provides a great foundation!
I attempted to take this prof summer of 2016. He is by far the WORST MATH TEACHER I have ever had in my life. I'm a straight A student and math is my strong suit. He doesn't teach, he simply just reads notes. The class is heavy and I dropped the first day. Best decision I have ever made in my life. I recommend you don't take this prof.
Smarter than me but didn't make me feel that way.
He's seriously the most laziest & worst teacher ever. Failed him for winter & retook it again and passed with an A!! He ruined match for me!
Pretty chill professor, his teaching method isn't really the ideal but along as you study hard and are fundamentally strong in Algebra then you should have nothing to worry about. He's really crazy about notation and hates Microsoft ahahaha
worst professor ever!!! he doesn't write anything on the board ever. Because he is supposedly allergic to the dust the marker creates? He literally just hands you out print outs of the book and reads them in class, he does no example problems at all!!! His motto is if you learn it yourself you will appreciate it more?? what kind of theory is that?
not much of a teacher, only reads straight from the book. he doesnt help students to learn anything. wants you to teach yourself. if you dont know something he will expect you to already know it. you wont learn anything from him. not a nice person. he always is "right". but if you want all the notes from the book printed, hes your guy. but hes suck
Funny guy, but honestly, he's not very good at explaining lectures. He starts the semester encouraging you to drop the class if you feel you are not prepared and makes sure everyone knows that the class is hard and most people won't pass. He assigns a LOT of homework. He straight up tells you that you're going to have to figure it our on your own.
Dr. Stephen Lancaster is as clear and as concise as they come. People complaining about the toughness are the ones not doing the homework. At ANY time Dr. Lancaster is will to re-explain any of the material, only, you have to ask the question, which most students do not. Dr Lancaster is not only an excellant teacher but a good man.
There are quizzes (1 pt extra credit) give for being on time to class (max of 20 pts), and there is a total of 700 pts in the class. 4 Tests worth 100 pts, 1 project worth 100, and the final worth 200. I never did any of the homework, just looked over notes and got a B in the class. Just memorize the procedures for the problems and you'll pass.
I recommend this professor only to those who have a solid foundation of knowledge in algebra, and not during a winter or summer intercession. His math51 class was my first math class in 9 years, and I didn't do well. I also took him during winter. No points for homework. Whole grade based on two tests. Nice man, but not to those who struggle.
Tolerable, definitely not enjoyable. He gets irritated easily and doesnt clearly answer your questions. Btw he is never wrong. Do not recommend. Although homework is lite.
It was a pleasure to have Pro Lancaster for both Math 70s and 110s. He does his absolute best to make sure everyone understands the material and is fairly lenient when it comes to grading hw I always struggled with math but pro lancaster is a really great instructor.
Home he is the most fair, halarious, and discipline professor Ive ever had. But all of those traits combined is what made me be like on top of everything. Like I usually procrastinate but he made me legit study and be on top of my stuff. The material isnt hard-ish in itself but just make sure you show up and do the hw and youll be hella fine.
Goes off topic a lot. Kinda funny. Expects you to know the math and gets irritated sometimes. Did good on all my homework and tests but did kinda poor on the final and my grade plummeted
Dont take him. If youre taking anything above precalculus, look for another professor. Unorganized, snarky, goes off topic, and gives unprepared/incorrect lecture notes. Only reason Im taking it in the summer is because I stuck through 181 in the spring until finals, so the material and notes are fresh in my mind. If thats not you, good luck.
I left this class with a lot more questions than answers, it was difficult, but only because he made it difficult. The content is not too bad, but the way that he teaches is extremely passive. 0 interaction betwern students and the professor. He doesnt give you a chance to digest the info. I will definitely retake this class, but different prof.
Took the 3-day, 5 unit class. No text book, cheap and easy online homework. Ti-84 recommended, unless you plan to borrow from the MARC, do your HW and return it same day. HW is given in packets with notes, the test is re-used HW questions. He tells you what is on the test. However the first unit of the class was odd, pretty much self teaching.
He is so funny, and he has a great personality. I would always look forward to his lectures because they make me feel smart. I'm usually horrible in math, but he makes me feel like I am good at it because he is such an amazing teacher. The homework and the exams are a breeze. Best stats professor at Mt. SAC.
(Winter session) WORST LEARNING EXPERIENCE. So much lecture time is wasted because he is unprepared to teach, can't even solve his own examples. Poor attendance and tardies are grade reductions. The one project he required the use of an external software, NO RUBRIC, NO INSTRUCTIONS, and NO HELP and still deducted for not having enough pictures?
I took him for winter 2020 and I really liked his class. Really straightforward class but very lecture heavy. As long as you complete the homework and really understand every problem, you'll do good in his class. He is also very nice and funny. Made me feel more comfortable doing math because he made it seem less intimidating.
The first exam everyone got an A, and he accused us all of cheating. So when we moved online due to COVID19, he sent an email to us saying he wasn't going to make his class easier just bc its online. He purposely made his exams harder and gave us fewer notes than he did for the first exam. WHY? He talks to us in a condescending tone, don't take him
He honestly made statistics make sense. He gives plenty of examples and the homework is very helpful for the exams. 3 midterms, a final and 1 project, there is homework but because we switched online he didnt make us turn them in anymore. The only con, whenever I asked a question he made me feel kind of dumb for asking.
Easily one of the laziest professors ever. His lectures consists of him handing out packets of pages from the book, and he just reads directly from there, and barely adds on to it. Homework is extra credit, but when we transitioned to online, he refused to accept homework, so no extra credit. Youtube is the key to passing this class.
He would get angry with the class for not understanding the material and when we switched to online he was not helpful whatsoever. He ignores all of his emails and his lectures are so long and boring. The final was worth so much basically if you fail the final you fail the class. He made stats 10x harder than it should be. Dont take him!
Stephen was so rude!! I am a respectful student but whenever the entire class didn't understand something he would get mad at us & shout at us as to why we didn't understand instead of explaining it again. If you asked a question he would make you feel stupid & embarrass you. He goes really fast during class & doesn't stop to clarify anything
Don't ever take this professor. He spends most of his lectures yelling and complaining about the tablet he is using. The entire semester is only graded by 3 exams. Lectures are confusing and hard to keep up. He mumbles half of the words he says. Worst professor i ever had at Mt SAC.
Terrible professor. Technologically incompetent, sloppy handwriting, terrible explanations during his lectures. Test "review" consists of him talking about what topics will be on the test, but does not do any practice problems, or really anything to help you understand the actual content of the test. Do not expect to learn much from this "teacher".
I could tell this wasnt gonna work out for me the first day of class. He teaches virtually on zoom without his camera on and just a whiteboard with math problems. He doesnt let us talk during lecture and forces the mics off, and if we have a question he just acts like he doesnt get it. Only two tests and a final, so I was failing. I dropped.
He gives very boring lectures and his voice is monotone so its really hard to be interested in his lectures. Your grade is solely based on exams and he doesnt give you much outside of his lectures and a few practice problems to really study and be able to comprehend the subject. The interactions between him and his students are almost nonexistent
Very lazy professor. Notes are all over place and constantly complains about how much the textbook is wrong and does nothing to change it. Makes you watch multiple lectures throughout the week then attend the live session. Most of the lectures is of him just complaining about the technology which is the most entertaining part of the class.
Very unorganized, He's not prepared to teach a 6 week course, very little structure. He loses his patience from time to time based on his tone, when students ask questions (this is due to how much of a mess instructions on his behalf are). Not someone willing to help his students, keeps assuming students know everything there is to the course.
Class is very lecture heavy, but prof sucks at teaching. He lectures like a student who is explaining a problem to a teacher. He would assume that we already know what phrases and variables mean. Assignments are also weird and he gets frustrated at students/technology/literally anything very frequently. Don't take him, would give a 0/5 if I could.
Here is the run down, this prof does not curve, grades off two exams, one project, and discussion board posts. Reuses video lectures that were recorded a year ago but still have multiple technical issues that cause him to default to a black screen leaving his notes that you could previously follow along to lost to the abyss that is the internet.
At the time of this review, this class was async. The lectures he made us watch were not helpful and at times he would even link us to a khan academy lecture on the given topic. As others stated, review sessions arent really review because he refuses to work out any problems for you. Save yourself a semester and do not take him.
I am normally an A/B student and I was struggling in this class. The professor doesnt turn on his camera when teaching and he mutes all of his students. If you have to ask a question you have to type it in the chat. He gets frustrated easily and blames it on everyone/everything but himself. If you are not good at self-teaching, do not take him!!
This course is the worst I have taken
Professor Stephen Lancaster is the worst Professor Ive ever had. You email him for help, he doesnt respond. I did 3 weeks worth of work to be thrown into the trash. I had to drop out bc I had a technical difficulty so I couldnt do my midterm digitally. He also makes you spend about $50 for the book & around $40 for the XP-Pen. Dont recommend!
please do not take him, find a better professor. i took him for winter 2022. literally terrible, you basically teach yourself.. lectures were pre-recorded an hour plus. when we met during class he didn't teach, he just talked for like 15 minutes. it was hard knowing your standing in the class and if you should drop or not. also, he was so mean :(
Rude, Impatient, Dismissive. Doesn't answer questions. HIGHLY disorganized class environment (incorrect syllabus/term information) Doesn't explain things and treats students as annoyances, like they should already understand the material in its entirety. Unrealistic amount of Homework,Testing and Assignments w/ little to no quality instruction.
His video lessons aren't much useful, just him giving brief descriptions or trying to figure out how to use things on his computer, and then sometimes mistaking things or going off topic. Video lessons can vary from about 1hr and a half to 2hrs long, they can definitely be shorten and more structured.
Class was not structured properly, video lectures were confusing and it was super easy to get lost. Zoom office hours were less than helpful, didn't allow any of us to talk and only used the chat to communicate. Exams were not easy but not too hard, but nonetheless the lectures did not help us. Practically self study, he was funny at least
He expects you to either have an Ipad or a touchscreen computer and also a hundred dollar calculator. If you turn in work out of order or not in the correct format he deducts your grade 50%. He expects too much!!
All of the reviews on here pretty much sum it up, his lectures are very confusing and the majority of his videos are him getting upset at his computer for lagging or accidentally using the wrong numbers/formulas and then telling us to simply ignore it like we weren't just taught something inaccurately! SUPER CONFUSING!
Has a god complex. Doesn't respond to feedback. Has millions of little rules that you are constantly wondering if you are breaking. Sucks at his lectures. Dont take this guy if you value sanity. But the book is free and he lets you use your phone as a calculator so thats nice.
Tried staying in the class during the spring but I just couldn't! His lectures are DISORGANIZED as he messes up one thing that causes the rest of the steps to be wrong, yet he doesn't bother to re-record the lecture that was recorded in 2020. He also requires to do some unnecessary things like using xp-pens or stylus & uploading written assignments
This class was upside down since homework was done in class and lectures were on videos for homework. This allowed for class to be for asking him questions. He is super nice and good at trying to make class fun to be in, although since everything could be made up for full credit, class was not mandatory.
If I can give anyone advice, do NOT take a class by this professor. He gives at least an hour and a half of video notes every week, homework is like 15 pages long each week and is nothing like the notes, he grades homework based off of correctness and whether or not he likes how you showed your work. He does not help at all. JUST NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The professor was ok but there was long homework but we had a week to do them. The tests weren't that hard and the quizzes you had unlimited attempts at doing them. Make sure to do the mandatory 6 week discussion boards because they are worth a lot of points. The class wasn't too hard just make sure you watch everything and read the lectures.
Professor Lancaster was wonderful altogether! For Math110, he provided his lectures through videos to ensure that we can fully understand the concept via rewinding, pausing, fast forwarding, etc. Although he wants every student to do well in his class, you have to come to him for help. I would take him again!
worst teacher I've ever taken. HE DOES NOT ROUND UP GRADE! I finished his class with a 79.08%!! I begged him to round it up to a 80% and he refused.
This man has the most unorganized lectures that he makes you watch from 2020! He does no teach in class at all so you're basically teaching yourself. do not take him if you don't want to go insane. even if you ask questions, it won't get you anywhere. DO NOT TAKE HIM TRUST ME
If I could use profanity I would. I have no idea what I am doing anymore in this class. He was teaching just fine and that was because the material was easy. After the first test (3-4 weeks ago) he has made absolutely no sense. NO STRUCTURE, MAKES NO SENSE, DROPS RANDOM ANIMAL FACTS. No one works during group work because no one knows what weredoin
You'll basically teach yourself in this class. Lecture videos have tons of mistakes, but you need to watch them in order to do the HW in class. He barely teaches during class time, it's mostly sit with your group and do the HW problems. Participation is req, you earn 30-40pts for it. Tough grader on exams, marks off points for EVERYTHING.
Lancaster is hilarious and created the best environment for his class. I truly enjoyed and looked forward to his class. It is difficult to get a good grade as it is VERY test-heavy and most of the teaching is done through long lecture videos you watch on your own. Still very fun tho :)
Loved this class. Professor Lancaster made the class environment very enjoyable and answered every question I had a long with holding office hours. This professor tries really hard to help you bring your grade up in every way as long as you are putting in the work and trying.
If you prefer self-paced learning, this class is ideal. You'll be in a group but mostly work alone. Ask groupmates before the professor. Tests are easy, though grading is tough. No need for an expensive calculator, use a free app that he tells you. Watch lectures at home, do assignments, and work quietly in class. a simple project offers easy points
I rated "OK", because i am not sure if it was a mistake but he sent a canvas message that we should complete the first assignments by Thursday to not be dropped but he dropped on Wednesday. I tried reaching out and got no response. Luckily I got into another course but this could really mess things up for some, So I decided to write this review.
Professor dropped multiple students the day before the first homework assignment was even do. When emailed regarding the misunderstanding I got no response.
Does not teach in class, if you dont watch the videos he post prior do not even bother coming to class he will not teach the subject. The videos are also VERY LONG it will consume ALOT of your time. Just find a professor who will actually teach in class.
Doesn't make you pay for any materials which is good. However he spends the whole class time just talking to students. He lectures sometimes but when he does he makes mistakes. Makes you rely on other students to find out what's going on. Exams are worth a lot and the project as well. Lecture videos were awful and outdated.
Do not take his course. It is not worth it.
Got an a and appreciate teacher's way of teaching
The class is very unorganized on canvas, making it hard to follow. The videos are not very informative, and the professor is not helpful when you reach out and instead of support, there are constant reminders about being dropped, and the workload feels overwhelming with little guidance.
I've heard here on rate my professor he is not a great or easy professor but for me he is easy to pass the class and is their if you need help. It does feel confusing but it all depends on how you work and feel I know this professor is not for everyone but he did helped me succeed and pass his class. Overall, an amazing professor.
